Hello! It’s nice to see another sso dev around here, been awhile since I’ve personally seen one. I’m aspiring to work on programming games once I finish my degree so I love meeting people who work on them!

The concepts you have are really neat and if it functions anything like my head is thinking (I assume it’s a way to recolor horses and change markings without making a brand new texture for each?) it really would open up customization for horses!

I think what I agree with others have said with varying degrees of politeness though that mechanically sso is in a weird place to add breeding. The horses cost a premium currency. If it has rng, it’s just gonna eat your money like gacha games do, so I’m glad your not approaching it like that. But if it has no reward other than another coat color, then I just don’t see the point? If there’s no benefit to breeding the horses aside from unique colors then why would I want to collect the two other horses I need for approximately $30 USD each if I don’t already own them just to then pay that value again for the foal? That’s $90 USD for one horse. I think that’s why some people think breeding would be ‘greedy’ to implement. Horses are so overpriced for what they are as is, and we’d need two we might not want to breed the one we do want. And there’s not much else you can offer in this game right now. Stats are only valuable to one subgroup of players who are serious about racing.

For breeding to work, in my personal opinion, horses need to be able to get off the premium currency and be accessible without waiting two months per horse or spending real money. Then breeding for colors alone has appeal bc it’s not eating my wallet. Otherwise, I think it makes more sense to use this increased color option function on a new buy screen that lets you choose your horse’s color and markings without being locked into a few specific costs like we are now. Even if I know what I’m getting, it’s just not worth spending more than the $30 it already costs for one horse for something purely aesthetic.

The concept has a lot of potential as a gameplay loop outside of racing, but it’s really hindered by horses being a premium thing and not a core thing like it is in those other games. The best way I could see it working as is would be if the foal didn’t cost star coins so you were effectively getting a “free horse” for breeding two you have, but getting those parents would still cost star coins. I think horse buying and selling would need a major rework as a whole, making horses more accessible and easy to get for people without spending real money before breeding would really work. So if something like that is on the table with it, go for it and I’m sure you’ll make something really neat! But with horses looking like most of the game’s income rn, I doubt that’s an option and unfortunately the current horse set up just doesn’t lend itself to a breeding system very well at all.

I think the best way to figure out overall if breeding would work is to ask yourself “what can breeding offer that a revamped buy screen can’t?” And go from there. I don’t work on the game, so your answers to that would be better than mine.

On a more personal less mechanical level, I’d like to not be REQUIRED to cooperate with other players for breeding if it’s implemented. Like I’d want to be able to breed two horses myself and not need another player to contribute one. I’m older than a lot of the kids in SSO (22 years old) and I’d find it somewhat uncomfortable having to communicate with these younger kids, which has been optional to this point, for a horse. It’s probably safer for them that way too given there are worse adults out there than one who just isn’t that comfortable with kids. I can’t imagine enforced co op is on the table with how the rest of the game is soloable, but I’m saying it just in case that comes up lol.

Your project itself so far is fantastic though whatever anyone has been saying so keep it up! Even if breeding doesn’t work out, what you make with this shader could still revolutionize horse customization in this game, and people will love that regardless. I’ll be sure to keep an eye on where this project goes!

I am the creator of this shader and currently I am one of the persons driving the development of bringing breeding into SSO and trying to make it a reality.

Up till now I thought this was one of the highest requested features, hence my surprise when I saw the large number of negative comments and concerns you, the players, rose.

One of the biggest concerns I've seen is the gambling aspect. When I told Stacy, our game director, I had an idea of how to solve the coats for a breeding system the first thing she told me was "If we do this, we need to do it in a way so there's no gambling". We are still very early in development and have only started to look at the technical possibilities. Whatever this project turns into I can assure you, we will never make you to pay for any unwanted random generated horses.

Another concern I've seen is that this would be an act of greed on our behalf. I just want to assure you I’m not driven by greed but passion for horse breeding. Right now, we are limited to 7 coats for each breed, and I would like to change that. I would like everyone to be able to ride their favorite breed with their favorite coat. I also want to develop a fun, engaging and educational breeding system (I think the science behind genes is quite fascinating), and I want to make our horses much more diverse and unique from each other just like horses are in real life.

I would like to understand your concerns properly so I can bring it with me into the development, I have been looking into all conversations about the topic I've found and I’m trying to understand, Now I would like to hear it straight from you.

like why will no one tell me anything actually bad about him, IS there actually anything or is this one of those things where insecure people will complain about some complete stranger who got luckier than them as if it's somehow said stranger's fault, is it like "oh that dude makes tons of money on buzzfeed just copy pasting things and /i/ can't even get many commissions, let me take it out on him instead of trying to find a way to get more commissioners" <-- i guarantee that multiple people have probably said that first sentence before maybe even word for word (which i know trying to get commissions is easier said than done but... it's not this adam guy's fault, it's not any popular person's fault, i get most of the people saying these kinds of things are mostly or completely joking but you still look like an ass)

but then so many of you focus almost or completely exclusively on stupid harmless shit like "unrealistic game mechanic" (which yeah for somebody who's trying to tout his game as realistic some of the things he does are kind of contradictory to that and stupid, but he's done far worse things plus even games that strive for realism have to sacrifice SOME realism otherwise the game wouldn't be playable. like police in real life don't just completely forget your face if you commit a crime and hide out long enough, and they especially don’t lose track of you if you go and get your car repainted right before their eyes, but they have to do that in gta games otherwise you'd never be able to get anything done because you'd have to run and hide any time you crossed paths with police even if you never do any more crime besides the first instance, which is impossible to do only one crime throughout the whole game anyway because some missions have police chases scripted in, but that’s kind of a tangent i’m going on there. or as an example that's actually in y.andere s.imulator, do you really want to wait there for hours for a.yano to dig a grave in the garden? no.) also, like, he works at b.uzzfeed. b.uzzfeed isn't remotely any goldmine of original perfect content. so many things on b.uzzfeedvideo or whatever are concepts taken from other y.outubers and such right down to the thumbnail, like, that's actually bad. that's actual theft. to my knowledge this adam dude is just using things that he drew himself. i've seen like maybe two posts ever about b.uzzfeedvideo's copying other people's ideas, i don't get why there was so little over that but then people are completely singling out this guy reusing his own damn things, there has to be more to it than that, right? and i've never seen the people obsessing over adam reusing his stuff say anything about flash puppet animators (which i hope none of you are doing because i can tell you from experience that flash puppets are goddamn annoying to use even if you're only posing out a still image and not an animation, MAKING puppets is even worse, but what i'm saying is that if you think repurposing assets that you drew is bad then it'd be hypocritical to not think flash puppets are bad too)

and like if you can do things to reduce effort while still making good money and the people you work for don't mind you reducing effort then like, I as somebody who has shit executive function finds that pretty smart, i'd love to have a job where i could get paid well even if/when i take shortcuts for spoons' sake. i don't know if he has executive function problems but you understand what i'm saying

i went on a couple of tangents but i'm trying to wrap my head around this, what'd he do i'm serious, and whatever he did if anything how come practically nobody talks about it, it seems like the dude has more backlash for reusing his stuff than that ctrl alt delete guy even got.

I’m taking the night off from sky-making because I’m actually ahead of “schedule” and because I’m getting sort of disturbingly obsessed and playing my game for a bit instead, so while it loads, I write a bunch of replies. :)

How do you mean? Like, made from panoramic pictures of specific neighborhoods? It’s an interesting idea, actually. I’d have to reinstall those neighborhoods to do it, though. Unless someone wants to volunteer to take pics for me. ;) Even so, I’m not sure I could get the scale right. Scale is a definite issue with these things. It will never be right, actually, but the most noticeably out-of-scale things on them are definitely buildings, when compared to the size of an actual, in-neighborhood building.

Speaking of Maxis, though... I’ve been fooling around with making some flat horizons to actually match the Maxis terrains, but it’s proving difficult. The scale issues are pretty bad. :\ I mean, like I said, these things are always going to be out of scale with the actual in-game houses and whatnot just because it’s the nature of the beast, but I’m trying to minimize that as much as I can. For some reason, it’s just not working very well with the Maxis terrain textures. I’m hoping to be able to make it work, but right now it’s not looking good. :\

Wow, just wow. This has got to be one of the coolest and most realistic skybox recolors I've seen around (though the 'realistic' part doesn't really come as a surprise, considering the source material :D) I'm extremely tempted to turn Strangetown into a miniature pseudo-Arizona town now.

:D That’s pretty much what I’m doing for retro-Strangetown. Because it amuses me to make the town Roswell-esque. Roswell’s in New Mexico, not Arizona, but the terrains in the two states are pretty similar. About the only difference, overall, is that (southern) Arizona has saguaro cacti and New Mexico doesn’t. I think NM is not quite as dry as AZ, but they’re both part of the same big desert, really, so...yeah.

In any case, that sky is one specifically meant for retro-Strangetown, for my own purposes. I also separated the horizon from the sky and put the horizon-only version on a lower layer so that the horizon can be used with any sky. So, the place can have different skies at different times but always have the same surrounding terrain, for continuity’s sake.

Like juggling, Sims have a remarkable natural aptitude for yoga!

That, and the fact that if you’re a Sim who’s really good at playing the piano, you can also paint like Picasso. Wish it was like that in real life because I’d really like to be able to paint. I mean, I can do all right with digital painting so long as I can use custom Photoshop brushes so that I can just “paint” a shape with a single click. But with actual physical art tools and supplies on an actual canvas or piece of paper? Completely hopeless. *sigh* Although I do plan to take some art classes at the local community college when we go home to CO. I’m hoping to be able to learn something. :)

Some download sites have an option to have individual files in a folder and you can download the entire folder, so maybe that's an option? But honestly whatever's easiest for you is fine. I want 'em no matter what! :D

On SFS you can upload stuff in folders, and then downloaders can choose to download individual files from within the folder. That’s how Lowedeus uploaded his recent batch of skies. I’m thinking that might be better for folks with slower internet connections or those who know they don’t want every sky and want to pick and choose. I’m going to make a photo album on my Livejournal space with at least one pic of every sky, that such folks can reference in order to decide what they want. I’m thinking I’ll do a folder as well as a single file with everything in one, for people who just want everything and who have the internet bandwidth to download it all within a reasonable amount of time. That ought to cover all the bases, I think.

Yeah, I can understand that. I’m just not overly-sentimental about my pixel people. Actually, I get far more attached to the pets than I do to the human Sims. So, I don’t have problems with killing Sims when the random number generator says to kill them and/or to have them die of illness thanks to RealSickness. And sometimes...Well, sometimes a population just NEEDS culling, especially because I let Sims breed as they will. In such neighborhoods, when I’ve got vamp residents, I’ll usually bump up the chance of bitten Sims being killed as population control. BUT! If you wanted to try it out, you could say they can only bite/turn/kill townies that you don’t really care about. :)

There’s always that one gorilla-faced dormie! :D I actually don’t mind that template at all. If you breed ‘em with a Sim with the right features to sort of soften the gorilla-ness, the kids are actually pretty darn cute. Usually chubby-cheeked and full-lipped but not as extreme as the gorilla-face. I have a weakness for chubby cheeks, myself. :)

Yeah, they’re pretty cool. Maxis, too, since those made-over Academie Le Tour buildings I use are all CC-free, and I see no reason to make them otherwise, for the (relatively) short time that Sims live there. I think those tiles came with Nightlife, IIRC...

You say "complete nerd" like it's a bad thing.

Nah, not bad, per se. Just reminds me too much of me when I was young and way too serious and not-fun for my own good. Being a complete anything can be a bad thing, after all. There was so much I missed out on when I was young because I was so focused on being a superior student and then on my career. The former actually didn’t have that huge of a positive impact on the latter. And I sort of gave up the career path I’d planned on to focus on raising my kids -- which I hadn’t planned on having -- anyway. So, in the end, all that seriousness and nerdy and sort of arrogant scholasticism had no real net gain and, like I said, made me miss out on experiences that probably would’ve been greatly enriching both personally and professionally. So...moderation in all things is my philosophy now. Which isn’t to say that I’m not a nerd at all. I mean, an encyclopedic knowledge of Star Trek as well as a nerdy fascination with arthropods kind of clinches that. But I don’t strive to be a complete nerd anymore.

:D Yeah, being nocturnal and living on the US west coast and going to bed around noonish my time does sort of put me on the same sleep schedule as normal diurnal people in especially the more eastern parts of Europe that are 9 or 10 hours or so ahead of where I am. Like you, for instance. :)

Y’know, I’m actually not a huge fan of the mascots in general. I find them more annoying than anything, same as I do Crumplebottom. Usually, I ban them with the Visitor Controller. For some reason I decided to let them torment dorms (they’re still banned in private on-campus residences, where it seems less appropriate for strangers to be barging in to do strange things) for now. I’m sure they will become annoying enough to ban them again, but for now...Yeah, they’re amusing me. And hey! The cow mascot’s sprinkler prank gives the germophobes something to do, with all the mopping. *eye roll*

Thank you! See, part of my problem with apartments is that I really can’t bear to furnish/decorate them identically. I really don’t know why. I mean, if I download an apartment lot with identically-furnished units, I’m perfectly OK with using them as-is. But, if I’m building the building, I just...can’t. I have to do them all differently. So, it’s like committing to decorating four (or more!) entire houses for one lot, and since furnishing/decorating is pretty much my least-favorite aspect of building...Yeah, apartment lots sort of intimidate me. Love building them. They’re fun to design/build. But the rest of it? Ugh, such a burden. :)

Well, with an introduction like this, even if I *weren't* interested in the stuff you have to offer (spoiler alert: I am), I'd still be curious to see what it is at the very least. :) Some of those old Pandorasims sets (if those are what you were referring to here) could definitely use better textures.

Yup, some of the stuff is from Pandorasims, indeed. And from xxxsims. Slig did some nice recolors of some of the latter’s stuff, at least, but I want to high-res ‘em a bit and do some different colors for my own uses. The Pandora stuff, though? Needs serious help. I mean, I get that the textures for these items were probably not the main attraction and all, but...well, such things are important to me. :) I want my game to look nice even if no one sees this particular aspect of it but me. And I imagine storytellers would want better-looking textures, too, for pics/videos.

Generally speaking, I feel like if you want to create something (whether it's Sims content, a story, or a goofy sketch), then create it. When it comes to Sims content, there's always someone who'll download and appreciate the content. Simmers are a diverse breed with a wild assortment of stories, hoods, and gameplay needs/desires. So on the heels of "If you want to make it, make it" is "If you want to share what you've made, share it." Kinky Sims for all! :D

*high five* Yeah, I know what you mean and that’s generally my attitude, too. This stuff, however, was going to be just for me, but then I got to thinking about how there’s a dearth of nice-looking stuff of this type and...Well, I can do something about that. I think, anyway. We’ll see, with some of the stuff. But, due to the more sensitive nature of this kind of stuff...Well, I second-guess. :)

OMG, don’t even get me started. I mean, OK, yeah, the whole thing sort of normalized mine and my husband’s lifestyle a little bit which on the one hand might be a good thing....but on the other hand, it didn’t do it right. Even if it was well-written (which it totally isn’t; it was a bad Twilight fanfic that was obviously written by someone who’d never had even remotely kinky sex, much less any contact with real people who practice BDSM), it portrayed an abusive relationship, not the sort of thing real people who are into this sort of thing practice. Just...ugh. Awful, awful thing. >:(

Skell, I think. I think it’s part of her repository project. I don’t think it’s necessarily perverted, though, especially not in game context. I mean, if you go by the speech bubbles, kids regularly talk about sex with their parents/siblings at the dinner table in the game. :) But even if that wasn’t the case...Well, kids will wear or have or do inappropriate things that they don’t know are inappropriate. They just think it’s pretty or something. Like, in this case, I imagine Owen likes those jammie pants just because they have purple hearts on them. He’s purple, so he likes purple things. :) He has no idea what they mean, and his parents probably think it’s funny. Because they’re that way.

Ohhhhh, I’m a big huge honking dorky Trek nerd. Even published a fanzine, back in the day, was heavily involved in Usenet newsgroups in the early days of the internet and was staff on one of the big-at-the-time forums when such things came to be. I’m not in the fandom per se anymore at all for various reasons, but I’ll always watch the shows and read fanfic and that sort of thing. (DS9 is my fave. TOS will always have a special place in my heart, of course, but most of my Trekker heart belongs to DS9. :) )

I would add an evil laughter gif here, but Tumblr won't let me, so you'll have to imagine it. :P Yeah, it can be surprisingly hard to find historical fiction that isn't focused on romance sometimes. I don't mind some, but when it seems to take over the rest of the story... meh. That's what I read fanfic for. And now I have the Ride of the Valkyries in my head too, but at least it's not Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer again.

It’s not that I can’t deal with ANY romance in historical fiction. I can if it makes sense within the story and the real history because, hey, these were real people and they fell in love and had relationships and all that. One of my favorite books (The Sunne in Splendour, by Sharon Kay Penman) is about Richard III, and a chunk of the 1000-page plot is about the relationship between him and his eventual wife and what impact that had on him as a person which in turn affected what kind of king he was, and that’s all good. But then there are those that are set in, say, Henry VIII’s court and it’s all thinly-veiled trashy romance novel tripe. (Yes, Philippa Gregory, I’m looking at you.) If I want that, I’ll sit and watch The Tudors, for God’s sake because ooh! Really hot men, gayness, AND boobies, yay! :) I’d rather read about about how that court really was. I mean, it was intriguing enough without having to pruriently sex it up. :p

I never could work out how to make a restaurant run properly either.

The “secret” is to run them with as few employees as possible. Especially at first. Because they will suck out all the money you make and more. So, you either have to have the owner do all the functions (Host(ess), cook, waitstaff) -- which you can do at first because you won’t have a lot of customers until the place levels up to at least Level 3 -- OR you have to use slave labor family members to fill the roles.

Also, having a limited menu of items that don’t require a lot of cooking skill is necessary, unless/until your cook levels up. Otherwise customers will end up with a lot of burnt meals, which lowers loyalty and makes it harder to get stars and level-ups and all that.
