17. "Please tell me that isn't your blood on your shirt."

Vex isn't used to the worry. When one is a powerful, nigh-indestructible undead killing machine with razor-sharp teeth and an ass that won't quit, one becomes accustomed to feeling untouchable, unshakable, even in the face of acute danger.

And then some skinny nerd with a death wish and annoyingly nimble fingers comes along to turn everything upside down, and here she is, arms crossed tightly around herself as she resists the urge to tear open this receptionist's throat in rage. All she gets is a phone call from the witch her brother's been knocking around with—"Percy's in the hospital. I...I thought you'd want to know."—and she's not even allowed in to see him. These fluorescent lights are hell on her skin, make her look even more undead than normal. How much longer is she expected to wait before someone gives her some fucking answers?

She's left to stew in her own anxiety for so long that she almost misses when they come out, Percy half-draped along Keyleth's side as she helps him hobble toward the door. In a flash, Vex is in front of them, earning a gasp of surprise from the witch. She inspects Percy, taking his chin in her hand as gingerly as she can to inspect his face, his neck, his clothes. "Please tell me that isn't your blood on your shirt."

And despite the swollen black eye and the stitches on his lip, the fucker laughs, gravelly and low, and Vex wants to bite him in all the best ways. "Not all of it."

Keyleth scowls. (As annoying as she finds her brother's fascination with the little witch, Vex can't deny she's pretty, rosy and delicate in a way she bets tastes wonderful.) "He stumbled across three vampires feeding on a woman in alley and thought he'd take them all on himself." Vex frowns; he's a talented vampire hunter, she is aware, so surely three wouldn't be enough to do this kind of damage. Keyleth continues, her voice dripping with acid. "Why don't you tell Vex how many wooden bullets you had on you at the time, Percival?" Oh, how fun—this kitten has claws.

Percy's eyes flick up to the ceiling, clearly over being chastised. "Two."

Vex's stomach swoops. Two bullets? For three juiced-up, pissed-off vampires? Gods, she's lucky he's alive. She drops his chin. "I thought you were intelligent, Percy."

His eyes—eye, really—narrow into slits. "What would you have had me do, Vex'ahlia? Let them kill her?"

Yes, she wants to snarl. Fuck that bitch, better her than him. Vampires killing humans is the natural order of things, but she'll burn this city down if he's one of them. She's aware of the hypocrisy, of the irrationality of her bone-chilling desire to keep him safe, but she can't be bothered with reason. He's hers, and Vex is not interested in sharing. She sees the challenge in his eyes, his waiting for her to say it out loud, her willingness to say that some nameless human woman should die in order to prevent this level of devastation to his body, the body she is so very fond of, but she won't give him the satisfaction.

She slips her arm around his waist, on the opposite side of Keyleth, and begins to urge them forward. "Come. I'm sure your witchy roommate has supplies to heal your pretty eye back home, and I'm going to take that shirt and use it to find the one who did this to you."

"If you want to see me shirtless, Vex'ahlia," he murmurs, low and weak, "all you need to do is ask."

Fuck, Vex can feel the heat of the embarrassed flush on Keyleth's cheeks, but it's overshadowed by her own heat simmering low in her belly. She brings her lips right up to his ear, which is also caked in blood. "You and I both you know you enjoy it when I don't ask."

That, at least, seems to rattle his self-satisfied confidence; he nearly trips as they exit the hospital. Vex grins, eager to get him home and punish him deliciously for his recklessness.

it's infuriating how women belittle the impact femininity has on girls. like it was horrible in the 2000s when girls and women were being made fun of for being bulimic, fat or anorexic on tv. when their illness was a fetish. but now the insane consumerism of apps like tiktok and instagram have really just BALLOONED the standards to a completely unachievable degree. like y'all think 12 year olds and 16 year olds are just watching women doing their cute lip-looks but it is 100% increasing their self-monitoring. they are checking filters, mirrors, constantly contorting their faces and then editing them to an unnatural degree on capcut before uploading. they then watch the playback and its featuring a total stranger who's a slightly hotter version of them. divorcing them further from themselves.

their cortisol levels are insane. they are the demographic suffering the MOST mentally from social media. the constant self-policing they have to do (even in their own minds when the camera is off bc they can't shake the feeling of being watched) has definitely inflated their anxiety levels. coupled with the misogynistic abuse and predatory stalking? more body dysmorphia, gender dysphoria, etc. add diet misinformation, and you've got a recipe for another dead girl in the next five years.

just for some women to say how happy they are they grew out of their tomboy phase and matured into a "real woman" AKA an insanely expensive misogynistic and pornographic caricature of womanhood.

these girls immune systems are being ROYALLY damaged not just by constant stress but by chemicals they shouldn't even be using. women are literally KILLING these girls. and we need to take fucking responsibility.

Reminder to get your COVID booster when they're available. I kept putting off my next dose because of my schedule, and I've been out with COVID for eight days now.

Posting the symptoms I had to inform others as COVID is constantly evolving:

Day 1 (3 or 4 days after exposure): started as a feeling of "imminent sickness" in the back of my throat. I otherwise felt 100%.

Day 2: Extremely tired. Congestion. Limited all contact.

Day 3: 101 Fever. Congestion. Extremely tired. Couldn't make it through lecturing my class (remotely). Began medicating with Theraflu (acetaminophen). Tested positive for COVID with the fastest and clearest positive test I've ever seen.

Day 4: Fever between 99 and 101.5. Cancelled all activity. Spent all day in bed. Extreme congestion. Extreme aches & chills at night. This day was absolutely miserable. My friend brought me soup. I cried about it. Continued with Theraflu. Considered going to the ER due to severity of symptoms.

Day 5: Intermittent low-grade fever at 99.8. Congestion continued, coughing and sneezing began.

Day 6: Fever cleared. Coughing & sneezing intensified. Tested again as per CDC recommendations: still a strong positive. Began taking Robitussin (cough syrup only, no acetaminophen).

Day 7: Coughing worsened significantly. Lots of liquids, lots of Robitussin.

Day 8: Today! No fever, no cough, some slight congestion remains. Once again tested positive for COVID-- with a weaker positive this time! I expect I'll be back to normal by day 10, but... trust me, if you're going to get your "booster" through a needle or ten days of this, choose the booster! As a reminder, you can order up to 4 free COVID tests at the end of September through HHS.gov!

I love how the game seems to take inspiration from those simplified cell drawings with bright colors and exaggerated shapes.

I love how the devs seem to have used microscopic images as a reference to make their alien world feel more alien.

I love the way the myelin sheathing is on the cables because it makes electric signals travel at a faster speed in real life... Those designs work and don't feel limited by what they took inspiration from.

Feels fitting that I've been wanting to get more out of Cyprus drawn and laid out lately and it also happens to be the start of Mer May! He's a character that I had around since around the beginning, but didn't really start getting to incorporate him much more till more recently and I'm glad for it.

Ended up with a polycule I guess (don't worry Jayce, you will eventually be included too). I kept shying away from it officially bc for some reason that's a thing that people still get worked up over still, but that's what it is! Jayce and Lucy get together and also their boyfriend Cyprus lol Anyway, this is some stuff of how he and Lucy first met that I was trying to get out. He has some interaction with the Bureau as an ambassador and has to sit in meetings. With recent events and the former Primus gone suddenly, Lucy moved up in position suddenly and also had to sit in on said meeting. Things have been chaos. He ends up joining in the Primus tournament and was also sick of the way they handled things. He and Lucy have some of that in common to start~

also for Bones Monday i think here's a pretty decent example of why i don't outright discount breeders who have used dogs with C-rated hips for breeding, especially with our scorers

these were all rated C in Norway:

hip scores say a lot about the hips of the individual dog but is not on its own a clear indication of genetic potential, if the better of these dogs are the worst of their combo and are bred to better hips, stacking the cards in favour of producing hips that are not-worse than this parent? my breed being what it is rn, i'd probably risk that tbh.

Least favorite... this is a cop-out but I think it'd have to be people. I feel like over the years I've slowly reached the point where humanoid anatomy isn't that much of a hassle to deal with anymore, but as soon as it comes to human faces, I just lose all interest, I'm sorry. I admire artists who excel at depicting humans but I just haven't found an enjoyable way to draw them.

For actual animals, I'd say horses. I've mentioned this before but they're just not for me.

I think my biggest enemy continues to be backgrounds and scenery. I've never managed to get the hang of them (and never will if I keep on avoiding drawing them). I try to tell myself that I used to struggle the same way with hands, perspective, poses, clothing and fabric folds and eventually regular practice made those easier, so why backgrounds would be that much more insurmountable.

I also don't enjoy realistic shading that much and usually try to weasel my way out of having to do it. I think my style might've developed into it's flat and lineart-heavy form as a result of shading evasion, at least in part, and I'm just wishing and hoping that my lines are strong enough to pick up some of the slack and convey form and volume even in the absence of true rendering.

i don't remember why i was thinking about this but i remember being surprised by some people's reactions to mulder killing people in the revival. like some situations were literally kill or be killed, and he's not letting scully die or leaving her behind. these people were all after them or their son — to me, this is growth. in the original run, both of them have pretty strong reactions to killing. they don't regret it at all when it's to save the other. but it isn't something they're okay with, they struggle with it. (i do remember seeing some opinions on scully screaming at boggs that she would 'gas him out of this life for good' if mulder died, and it being ooc but i think that's a case of not understanding how crazy scully is, how fiercely she wants to protect mulder, and her state of mind being very fragile. perfectly in character imo)

mulder didn't kill cigarette smoking man when he had the chance in the original run, or anyone in the syndicate? and idk look where it got them. he almost went to prison for a murder of a man who wasn't dead, and was trying to kill him lol he was on the run for years, completely isolated. in this, mulder & scully had a plan for home invasions. she fell asleep at the dive bar with her hand around a glock & jerked awake when the waiter approached their table. that was their normal for years, and they may be free now, working at the bureau again but for years, they were looking over their shoulder, isolated from the world with no more resources. that absolutely changed them.

in the revival, it is literally all about william. mulder is stepping up to support scully in a new way. only taking the risks she asks of him for their son. he is doing all of the things she can't. i think the revival is the only time we truly see "damsel" scully. because she is ill and weak — having seizures, in a car accident. she couldn't fight back the way she normally can and mulder is the only reason she's alive. (i know it's been said, but genuinely one of the hottest mulder moments is him slitting that man's throat.)

mulder even takes on scully's more typical paranoia, as in not trusting skinner despite vouching for him when scully was dying of cancer. literally refusing to name him, at the expense of himself. (and then correctly calling out blevins, a man who was connected to the syndicate.)

like. they've already lost william because people were after mulder and scully couldn't protect him alone. and now, they've learned william is being hunted. csm still wants him, that new group wanted him. they killed jackson's parents! they tracked him down multiple times. they nearly killed scully.

i think it makes perfect sense mulder is at a point where he won't hold back. he couldn't protect samantha, but he can protect his family. he's healthier than he's ever been — more fit, he's on medication. he's older but he's still got some scoot in his boot and he's got plenty for scully & william. even skinner!!

he's not like the syndicate. he is not abducting, torturing, raping anyone. he's defending himself and his family. i don't think there's a single wrongful killing between either of them.

like scully learned the lesson mulder already understood in unruhe, mulder has learned the flip side of that lesson, what scully already knew. the reasons people are committing heinous crimes does not always matter. trying to get answers from liars is not the right course. stopping these evil men is right. i love that these two will do whatever it takes to protect each other. not just trekking through antarctica with a bullet wound to the head, or taking government agents hostage, or autopsying your partner's mother, or beating the shit out of a medical rapist to save scully's daughter. they will kill. no one will harm them while the other is around to prevent it. if they're dying, they'll die together.
