Saw a post complaining about longform texts on Tumblr. It was sort of dunking on people who post without a read more - which I agree is handy just for like practical purposes, even if people have shorten posts on. But there was a vibe in the notes that long-form texts on Tumblr inherently went against the point of the website.

And I think it's interesting from a social media and branding standpoint. Tumblr has, for as long as I can remember (so like maybe 12 years?) been pretty vague about it's intended use. It calls itself a "microblogging" platform at times, which I agree with since it clearly doesn't lean towards longform text.

At the same time, most other outlets will call it a social media and blogging platform. Since 2019 it's been owned by the same company that owns WordPress, a content management system more commonly associated with longform text, so in my mind it isn't shocking that some people would assume Tumblr can be used for the same purposes.

I know it usually isn't, but I do it anyway. A website like this is a big network that really has no one culture if you think of it objectively. Whumplr interacts with each other very differently from aesthetic lifestyle blogs, or people who use their Tumblr as a way to just reblog and comment vaguely on softcore porn. It's just kind of fascinating to think about.

Going off the movie stand point, I understand people's gripes with Fiyero "not being a character" and being seen as a lesser love interest than Glinda. I multiship but do see why it feels like he is a more concept than character especially in act1/part1.

Which I think is whats going to make the turning point work even more, to when act 2/part 2 comes around. And shows he is no fully just a male!Glinda, I am hoping they add a bit more of his book characterisation in part 2 (im biased to book!Fiyero). Or even sprinkle in more changes that overall work like changing out Avaric for Feldspar and the more secluded meeting. Like Ik not to spoil anything but tbh fiyeraba is one of the only hetships i go to bat for like they are literally one of my favs and I am excited for how it goes from here.

He often speaks without thinking, especially when making a joke, and this has hurt people's feelings before. He has poor emotional regulation, which has led to problems with his morphing power. He is also the team strategist, as he often sees things the others don't.

Something that occurred to me this time…

… Is that Eliot deliberately brings Hardison w/ him to confront Moreau the first time. He tells Nate that he and Hardison will do it (don't worry, I also Love Hardison taking the moment to be like 'hey, are you okay?' bc those two usually express themselves through bickering so much that it clearly telegraphs just how off Eliot is being that Hardison is dropping the usual banter to be serious).

Which for one thing, says something about Eliot's confidence in Hardison in general, but also, like… Yes, Parker's probably not the choice for that introduction, it's not her style, but Nate or Sophie could also have played the part. He could have tried to go alone. But he pulls Hardison.

Obviously he's not trying to put Hardison in danger, he makes it quite clear in all other scenarios that he does not tolerate Hardison in danger (visual cues in The Gone Fishin' Job my beloveds), the others are well aware of the fact that he's Done Some Shit and are equally unaware of his connection to Moreau. And to be honest, I can't pinpoint an exact reason why I think he might have done it, chosen Hardison to be the one who finds out first. Maybe he suspected Moreau would underestimate Hardison, making him safer (relatively, if course), then someone like Nate or Sophie. Maybe he thought it would be best to have Hardison's tech skills as back up. Maybe he thought Hardison would roll w/ the punches the best. Maybe he just wanted Hardison there for morale.

I don't know, but it's a moment that didn't really occur to me the first time, but I think is actually quite meaningful in a more emotional way.

VARNA FARAGHER, 1/4, just like she's the #1 Realmguard.

Varna's a Realmguard, essentially a cross between a knight and a defender of her universe. She's both the oldest, and highest ranked Realmguard, with her title being "Keeper of Overmorrow", and her being currently 1078 years old.

She's as prevalent in Realmal tales as a tricky fox or a wise owl are in fables and fairytales, known for having eyes that seem to know just a bit too much, and the ability to body any threat that comes her way. I'm not joking when I say she's a legend.

She's actually Covel and Pursival's guide trying to get them where they want to go. Though her help is extremely appreciated, and she does her best to get them where they need to go, her being the Realm Guard to assist them makes the journey feel less like an average adventure, and more like a legend in the making. Which rightfully unsettles Pursival.

ok so today i watched episode 393 of shippuden. and i find it SO FUNNY how they're doing this. left off with a Massive cliffhanger (oh no!!! theyre both gonna die!!!!) in order to do a fucking Twenty Episode Long filler arc. which actually im excited to watch it so i can see more of Fu, but it's still SO FUNNY to do it like that. like these episodes came out one per week. can u imagine what it mustve been like for anime-only fans who had to wait like Five Months before they saw more???? it'd be Agonizing!!!!!!! lmfao.

This ~Secret Big Boss~ who is ACTUALLY at fault for everything (just trust me bro) is only actually around for 7 episodes, 3 of which were backstory?????

ㅤi'm realizing it's been a while since i've explained why byan is, you know, even called byan in the first place. i feel like a lot of my mutuals probably have no idea, so lemme change that real quick!

ㅤbyan's actual, legal name is yeong-hwan byun — or byun yeong-hwan but, because they exist in a primarily english-speaking setting, they're in the habit of saying and writing it the western way. that is, with their given name first, followed by family name rather than the other way around, as a korean name typically would be.

they've always hated their name. in part, it's because it was given to them by the mother who didn't even want to keep them. the fact that she's never been in their life, yet they're stuck sharing her surname is something they've always despised. mostly though, they hate yeong-hwan because it's long. it's boring. they have to correct people on the pronunciation an exhausting number of times. and, of course, it's masculine. nothing about it has ever felt right to them.

by the time they were about six, they were desperate for something different. so, since no one else was giving them a nickname like they were secretly hoping would happen once they started elementary school, they took it into their own hands. taking the 'by' from byun and the 'an' from the end of yeong-hwan, they crafted the name byan for themself. it was shorter, it was cuter, it was unique and not inherently gendered — it felt so much more like them. it still does. they've been using it ever since, demanding that anyone who interacts with them on a regular basis use it over their "real" name, and they often threaten violence on anyone who doesn't. —and yet at the same time, most of the people they meet outside of school have no idea that they even have any name other than byan.

Some Batman: Telltale thoughts

[this is a Batman Telltale critical post, ye be warned.]

So. There are perhaps no words in the english language to describe with how stupid i feel right now.

I started Telltale Batman because i thought that it's one of the more distinct unconventional Batman narratives that would let you have a more interesting, complex and nuanced relationship between Bruce and Joker— the game even lets you bring all of Bruce's sincere hypocrisy and sentimental selfishness to the surface and have him admit that yes, he can fight the rogues gallery because it takes a madman to know a madman; to love a madman. For a moment i geniunely thought that i can escape the everpresent shadow of DC hays code in the freakshow funhouse that is Batman comics, i thought Telltale had done something different.

But telltale's approach to The Enemy Within is so flaky and flimsy and timid at best— such noncommittal twist on themes of pain and grief. They take on a hefty plotline, "what does it take to actually fight through evil and be surrounded by it? How long does it take before your resolve and your selfhood cracks? When you lose the mask, which one did you truly lose— The ideal persona, the superhero, the crusader, or the person underneath, the casket that holds all your humanity and your heart and your hopes? How long can you stare onto the abyss before it stares onto you?" It's indeed a very Nietzsche approach to Batman— except that a good Nietzsche narrative takes a lot of intentional plot points and honesty of thought and of heart. And Telltale doesn't commit, not to Bruce's characterization, and not to any other character, and definitely not to Joker's journey in any variation of it. The existence of the Vigilante route is useless on every front; Joker is going to turn into a villain anyway, just with a different hello kitty eyeshadow palette and an extra bland consolation lollipop. No good choice Bruce makes on Joker's behalf affects anything whatsoever, and i particularly love the "community and friendship and sympathy do not help the mentally ill and all that ever works is punishment and shock therapy and confinement and loneliness" message the vigillante route puts on the table, charming charming status quo commandments from DC as always.

Telltale Batman could only be revolutionary if it had dared to break comic convention and let the vigillante route play out like Selina and Bruce's relationship always does; very grey morality, irrational, full of tension and trust, unstable, intriguing, inexcusable, irreversible, unavoidable and heartfelt, human. But we can't have nice things in batmanverse, so both Joker routes run on stuck gears and topple and fall into a predictable narrative hole that neither Bruce nor Joker can claim out of.

And on the predictable front? this story is too lukewarm to be a good time for me personally. When you get 84 Batman comics per minute every other Tuesday, all ending the same way no matter whatever the fickity happens inbetween, you have to pull no punches. This is my 53368532th Batman-with-tragic-batjokes-implications read of the week, say something new or forever hold your blue-balling silence, i dont care.
