Ghost of a Christmas present

1 December 2024 - 23:47 - 24 days till Christmas

They stumble together up the stairs. He’s giggling, leaning his weight on Sherlock, who is barely holding back a smile.

“It’s not even that funny.”

“He just dropped it… Fries and all.” 

He sighs, contented, then starts laughing again as he remembers the poor guy’s distraught expression. 

He tries to calm down, once they're in front of the door. He breathes out, wipes away a tear, and searches his pockets. He finds the key and, with one last pat on the arm, lets go of Sherlock. He stabs at the keyhole, twice.

“Do you want me to open that?”

He is considerably steadier than John.

“Nah, I’m fine, I just-” He stops. Positions the key with the concentration of a safecracker. And… In it goes. “Hey-heyy! See?”

“Very good, Watson.”

“Thank you.”

He unlocks the door and opens it. The warm light of the hallway falls onto the floor, and he can see the dust swirling around in the air. He almost doesn’t notice the red card on the floor. Maybe if he didn’t concentrate so much with the key, he wouldn’t have. One of those ‘Sorry we missed you’ things. Might be Sherlock’s gift.

He steps in, covering the paper with his shoe. He holds the door open, leaning on it - he doesn’t really need it, but it’s a reason to stay in the same spot. Sherlock shuffles in, flicks on the light and turns around while taking his coat off. John pushes the paper under the cabinet behind him. It’s out of sight before Sherlock notices, and now he can close the door. 

It might not be the gift, anyway. He doesn’t remember the ETA but it was definitely later in the month.

He’ll go check it out tomorrow.

Sherlock’s gone to the kitchen. 

“Whatcha doing?”

“Water.”

“...doin’ water,” he mumbles, dragging his feet into the living room. The couch beckons to him. He sits down, closes his eyes, then realizes that sitting down is not gonna cut it, actually, so he lets himself slump down to his side. The microphone bothers him now, so he blindly sets it on the coffee table.

“He’s doin’ water, listeners. If this ever becomes relevant for any case…”

“Yes, I’m sure they would be thrilled to listen to your drunken mumblings. Again.”

“Hm. Piss off.”

He hears Sherlock’s steps, closer and closer. John doesn’t open his eyes, but when the steps stop he could swear that Sherlock is right next to the couch.

“Watson.”

“Mmmhh?”

Two more steps. A tap on his shoulder. John sighs and cracks an eye open.

Sherlock’s holding out a glass of water.

“Yeah…” He props himself in an elbow and takes it. “Thanks, mate.”

“You’re welcome.”

He drinks half of it, sets it on the table, and slumps back down. Sherlock taps him on the shoulder again.

“You should go to bed.”

Oh, but he just lied down…

“Mmmh.”

“You’ll regret it in the morning.”

“Yeah, I’ll go. In a minute.”

Some seconds pass, and he hears no steps going away.

“Y’know, I don’t actually mean 60 seconds.”

“You should. You’re already half-asleep.”

“Nah. Just resting my eyes for a bit.”

Silence. Then, “If you’re sure.”

“Yeah, don’t worry. I won’t fall asleep.”

2 December 2024 - 12:34 - 23 days till Christmas

Sherlock shakes him awake.

“Case!”

“Wha-” He opens his eyes, and the light hits him right in the face. “Ughh. Jeez… What?”

“There’s a case! A client. Downstairs.”

“Ah.” 

He presses his palms to his eyes. 

“Alright, mate, just give me a second…”

Sherlock pulls the blanket off him.

“Hey!”

“Come on. It’s not like you have to change out of your pyjamas.”

He’s right. He’s still wearing yesterday’s clothes. He vaguely, vaguely remembers Sherlock trying to convince him to go to bed.

He sits up and reaches for the half-empty glass. The water tastes dusty.

“Ugh.”

His neck hurts.

That’s what he gets for sleeping without a pillow. At least he had a-

Oh.

He doesn’t remember his blanket being there.

“Why are you smiling?”

“I just am.”

“...right.”

He holds out a hand, impatiently. John takes it and Sherlock pulls him to his feet.

His head protests to the sudden movement. He covers his eyes with one hand and holds on to Sherlock's shoulder with the other.

“Christ, my head…”

Feels like he banged his brain to the front of his skull.

Sherlock just pats him on the shoulder.

Fair enough.

It’s his own damn fault.

They both drank, sure, but one of them knew when to stop.

“I could go alone”, Sherlock suggests after a while.

No. They’re a team. And it’s not like he’s sick.

“No. No, I’m ok.”

“Good.”

John takes the mic from the coffee table. He hesitates. There's something… Something else. Something he should do.

“You can have your coffee downstairs.”

“Right. Yeah, alright. Let’s go then.”

21 December 2024 - 11:39 - 4 days till Christmas

The door opens just as John finishes his sandwich. He thinks it’s Mariana, for a second. Just before breakfast, she complained that she kept procrastinating on sorting ‘a mountain of paperwork’, and John hesitantly offered to help. She refused - John only detected a small hint of ‘you’re too incompetent for this’ - but did ask him to keep her company so she’d feel peer-pressured to start. He said he’ll be down ‘in a minute’. 

The door slams. 

Not Mariana, then.

“Heyy!” He greets, and exits the kitchen. “Look who’s ba-”

“No, stay where you are!”

John stops just before catching sight of the hallway.

“O-ok? Why? Are you alright?”

“Yes, Watson. Perfectly fine, thank you.”

He sounds fine, happy even. But why’s he being weird?

There’s some shuffling, then a cabinet door slams shut.

“Alright!”

John enters the hallway. He squints at Sherlock, who’s leaning on the small cabinet, trying to look as innocent as possible.

“What are you up to?”

“Nothing. I thought you were downstairs, with Mrs Hudson?”

“I’m on my way now.”

He looks at the cabinet, then at Sherlock again. He’s trying - and failing - to suppress a smile.

John’s eyes widen.

“Is it my gift?”

“No,” he answers without missing a beat.

“It is, isn’t it?” John beams, excited, and Sherlock stops trying to hide his smile.

“Alright, yes, it is. But I’m not showing it to you.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it... Though, you did make me curious. You’re looking rather proud of yourself.” 

“I do think I've made a good choice.”

“Can’t wait to see it then. And, for the record, I think I’ve made a good choice, too. I’m o-” He stops himself before making a pun that would give it away. “Erm. Yeah. Think you’ll really like it.”

Sherlock’s smile widens.

“Alright.”

“Alright. Well, I’m off.”

His smile slowly fades, on his way down. He does wonder... It’ll be here before Christmas, right? The ETA said it would, before the 23rd if he remembers correctly. 

Still. His chest feels a bit tighter than a minute ago.

Mariana opens the door.

She asks him what’s wrong within the minute.

He shrugs, and tells her.

“I mean, it should be here in the next two days, but… I dunno. Cutting a bit close.”

“Well, you should’ve ordered it sooner.”

“I did! In November!”

She throws him a confused look.

“It’s from Etsy. Uh, eBay. No- Yes.”

“Ah.” 

She nods sagely.

“Only one seller had what you wanted?”

“Yup.”

“Far away?”

“Yup.”

“Did you choose the cheapest shipping option?”

John doesn't answer.

“Ay, Dios…”

“It said before 23!”

“Ok. Ok. Um. It should have a tracking number. Open your email.”

John fiddles with his phone. 

Mariana waits around 30 seconds.

“What is taking so long?”

“Just have to log in…”

Mariana makes several faces - and noises - of disbelief.

“It’s a… An old account,” he explains. “The one connected to… Uh. eBay.”

He remembers what is wrong with his password.

“Ohh. With a zero… I always forget.”

And he’s in.

“Hey-Hey! It’s here!”

“It is?”

“Yeah!” He taps on the screen. “Hmm-hmm… Arrived at your local delivery office… Pick it up unti-”

He stares at the date. His smile slowly fades away.

“Oh, John…” she says, in her please-tell-me-you-didn’t voice. “Until?”

“...the 19th.”

She buries her face in her hands.

“You’re such an idiot.”

He is. 

He should’ve checked.

“But it was supposed to be door-delivery. And I didn't-”

Then he remembers. The red card he’d pushed under the cabinet. 

“Oh…”

He forgot.

Just like that.

If he didn’t drink so much that night…

“No. No, maybe… Maybe if I call them? I- I mean it can’t have gotten that far. In two days?”

“You can try, but…”

She shakes her head.

He does try. He calls, explains, offers to pay the transport again but the best he gets is a polite “There’s nothing we can do.” 

That, and the suggestion to order again, this time with express shipping.

It’s just the one item. 

He didn’t find it anywhere else.

There’s no way he can re-order it in time.

It’s gone.

Four days till Christmas and he’s got no present for Sherlock. 

He covers his mouth with one hand. 

“No... I’m so stupid. I’m so stupid. I saw the thing, the delivery… form… thing, but I- I was drunk, and then there was a case and…”

And he forgot, and didn’t remember for almost three weeks. Barely even thought about it at all. Until today.

He plopps himself on Mariana’s couch.

“I’m an idiot. I forgot . Just… And- I mean, screw forgetting about that card, I didn't even think to check my mail. I- I barely even thought about it at all.”

The most important person in his life, and he couldn’t even be bothered to check on his Christmas present.

“I’m a bad friend.”

“Ok, woah.” Mariana sits up straighter. “You’re not-”

“I am.”

“John…”

“I mean, how- How? How do I not think- How did I not remember-”

“Ok. Stop. Seriously. Calm down.”

He shuts up. Mariana tries to get him to face her, so he does. He must look just as bad as he’s feeling -  she’s making the same face she made when seeing a video of a three-legged puppy the other day.

“John… Yeah, you… You’ve been kinda dumb about this. But you’re not a bad friend. If you were, you wouldn’t even care that much. Right now.”

Maybe. Maybe not bad. But still not good enough.

“I guess…”

“And you know he won’t hold it against you.”

“I know...”

“Just get him something else. Er. Maybe a scarf?”

“A scarf ??” He scoffs, dejection turned to indignation. “Yeah, sure, ‘there you go Sherlock, my best friend, person who changed my life for the better, don't know where I'd be without you, there you go, Merry Christmas, it’s a scarf I got from Primark!’”

“Nobody mentioned Primark.”

“Not the point!”

“Fine, then, a book.”

John hesitates. He does like books. Well, certain books. But…

“No. It’s… That’s a very ‘I was invited to my classmate's birthday party’ gift.”

Mariana raises an eyebrow, amused.

“Should I be offended?”

“You’re a nerd, you love getting books.”

She shrugs.

“Eh. True.”

She considers something for a moment.

“And… If it helps. I had this really good friend whom- to whom I’ve only ever gifted books, for her birthday. But I would write… Sort of… Like a little dedication, on the first page, but in the style of the book? There was one that sounded like a ransom letter, one like a prophe…cy. Stop looking at me like that! She liked them.” 

“Was she a huge nerd, too?”

“Absolutely.”

They both chuckle.

John’s smile fades quickly.

Sure, he'll get him something else. But…

“I told him he’s gonna love it. What I got him.”

“Why would you do that.”

“Because! It was… Y’know. I was excited.”

He tells Mariana about the encounter. 

“Alright, now I’m curious. What was it?”

John crosses his arms.

“Not telling you.”

“Why not?”

“Because you’ll either think it’s stupid or call me an idiot again because it was perfect. And… I’m frustrated enough as it is. Don’t wanna think about it anymore.”

Mariana raises her hands in surrender.

“Alright. Fine. Keep your secrets.”

He drums his fingers on the armrest.

“Last year I got him the perfect gift and I’d only known him for three months. Even less.”

He can’t have a worse gift this year. An impersonal one. Something you could gift practically anyone.

“I don’t know, John. It’s a bit late for something… Not basic.”

“Yeah. I know.”

What could he find in 4 days?

21 December 2024 - 15:12 - 4 days till Christmas

The mall is full of people trying to get their Christmas shopping done. Some are filling their carts with food, others with Christmas lights and tinsel and reindeer figurines. Others, idiots like him, are still browsing for some present or other. An old lady comparing two pyjama models, a middle-aged guy scratching his head in front of the toy aisle, a young man picking out some make-up- Make-up? For Christmas??

John shakes his head.

Some people.

Well. He’s probably not in the best position to be judgy right now.

He walks around with his hands in his pockets and a look of utter defeat on his face.

Nothing’s good enough.

There’s a coat, warm and soft and pretty. But he has enough coats.

He could always buy him a puzzle. There’s some with 2000 pieces. But the pictures don’t impress him much, and none would really go with Sherlock's room.

The unidentified Christmas carol blaring from the speakers fades and another song starts playing. John barely holds back a groan.

“Hello, listeners,” he starts in a sweet voice. “If you're wondering what that sound is- You're really, really lucky.”

Too harsh?

“Eh. Alright, that's a bit- Cuz it's a great song, really, but I've heard it- This is the 23rd time I've heard it this week alone . Yeah. Not even exaggerating- I counted.”

He stares at a snowglobe for a couple seconds. 

No. He could get anyone a snowglobe.

“It's gotta be a form of torture, right? Every single year, as early as Nov- Actually as early as October! Boom. There she is. The Ghost of Christmas Present. Cuz it's- Cuz- Yeah. Why not Past? I hear you ask. Well. That's gotta be Last Christmas, surely. I mean, it’s in the name.”

He thinks for a couple seconds.

“…Dunno what Christmas Future would be. Ehh. Yeah.”

He’s approaching the books and stationary aisles. He is not buying him a book.

“Really hope there’s no case, in the following days, and I can just delete this. I’m not too keen on sharing my astronomical failure with the world. Heh. So- H-Hope there’s no murderers lurking around the corner!”

He chuckles. An old lady gives him a weird look and he decides he should probably stop talking.

There’s some albums. Empty albums, for pictures.

This would’ve been nice.

But he doubts they have enough photos.

He opens his gallery - his Favorites folder - to check. 

If he doesn't count variations of the same photo, there’s around 6 of them.

He sighs.

She's right - it’s too late for anything special.

Then his eyes go wide.

“Oh.” He chuckles, delighted. “Oh, I’ve got it.”

23 December 2024 - 17:03 - 2 days till Christmas

“I promise next Christmas I’m staying here.”

“Hey, we’ll hold you to that!”

She opens her arms and John goes to hug her. She only hugs him with one arm, and gestures to Sherlock to join in with the other. He does. John throws a hand around his back, too.

She squeezes them both as much as she can. 

“Awww… My boys. I’ll miss you so much!”

“We’ll miss you too.” He waits for a second. “Isn’t that right?”

“Yes. We will.”

She squeezes one more time, then lets them go.

“You take care of each other, alright?”

John doesn’t see Sherlock frown but he hears it in his voice.

“Of course,” he answers.

Mariana gives John a look. ‘I mean you, specifically’, it seems to say.

“When do we not?”

He offers to help with the bags, and as soon as the outside door closes, Mariana turns to him.

“Listen, I know you need time to work on that thing, but he’s started to notice something’s… Different.”

“What, did he tell you that?”

Mariana hesitates. She gestures for him to put the bags down.

“Sort of. Just… He just… Asked if I know why you’re uh… Acting weird.”

John sighs.

“Right. Yeah, I had to shoo him out of my room yesterday, that was a bit… Much. But, I mean, I had everything laid out on my desk and all.”

“Hm.”

“Yeah… Think I might ask him to hang out tonight. Walk Archie or watch a movie, I dunno. And work on the gift at night. Don’t want him to think I’m mad at him or something. At Christmas, too.”

Mariana pats his back.

“You do that. I will call an Uber.”

She whips out her phone and types the airport’s name.

“Um. Yeah, by the way. Did you find anything… Usable?”

She blinks at him, confused, and he's just about to clarify when she goes,

“Aaahhh! Right. Er. No.”

He pouts.

“But! I will have a more thorough look after I check in. And send you what I find. Ok?”

“Yeah. Thanks, Mari.”

She smiles and gives him a quick side hug.

“It's gonna turn out great, John. You got this.”

25 December 2024 - 10:06 - Christmas Day

They're sat down, cross-legged, on the carpet, in front of the Christmas tree. They're both still in their pyjamas, with their hair all tousled, and even though John has only been able to catch 5 hours of sleep, he’s wide awake.

He really hopes Sherlock will like it.

“I don’t understand why we can’t open the others, too.”

“Because I promised Mari we’ll open them on video call. So we’re… You know. Together. In a way.”

“Will she also wait to open hers?”

“Yeah. Course.”

Sherlock thinks about it.

“Fine.” He looks at the gifts again. “Just us, then?”

“Yeah.”

Sherlock mutters another confirmation, then pushes towards him a big, colourful bag stapled together at the ends so its contents can't be seen.

“You go first.”

John grins.

“All right! Well, now I know why you had to hide it in the cabinet.”

Sherlock smiles and nods.

John forces the bag open, leaving the staples hanging uselessly on each side, and pulls the object out.

It’s a backpack. Grey, sleek, and - John opens it - clearly designed with laptops and cables in mind.

He rummages through all the compartments and pockets, mentally mapping out where every cable, battery and SD card will go, while Sherlock explains that,

“You’re always complaining about having to ‘dig’ for the things you need in your current backpack, so I decided I’d get you one specifically designed for electronics. It has a built-in charger, elastic bands, hidden pockets, a reflective strip and it’s ergonomic. And waterproof, in case you find yourself in another pool. Or river.”

John smiles, and doesn’t remind him whose fault it was the last time he’d taken an impromptu bath.

“It’s awesome, mate. I love it.” He pushes it aside and gives Sherlock a quick hug. “Thank you.”

Now for his turn.

“Ok. Um. First of all, I have… a… confession. To make. You know how I told you you’ll really like your gift?”

“I recall, yes.”

“Right. So. I was a total idiot and forgot to pick it up and now it’s gone. I tried- Yeah. But I did…” He gives Sherlock the gift, a long, rectangular book-like thing clad in red and gold paper. 

“There’s this. Well, It’s kinda last minute, but…”

He trails off. Sherlock looks at him, clutching the gift in his hands.

“It doesn’t matter what it is, Watson. I will treasure it simply because it's from you.”

John presses his lips together. He definitely doesn’t feel his eyes sting.

“Stop that. You softie… Actually, I’m really not the one to talk.” He gestures towards the gift. “Go on, then.”

Sherlock tears the paper away.

He sees the brown cover, and the clearly hand-painted golden letters. 

‘ Our Adventures ’ - not a terribly creative title, but it gets the point across. 

Sherlock’s eyebrows raise, but he doesn’t say anything. He opens it and looks at the first entry. There’s some writing - there’s writing on all the pages, short summaries of what happened and little anecdotes. There’s a generic picture of Ming pottery, one of a flower, and some drawings.

“It’s uh. It’s a scrapbook. Of our cases, together. Well, I wrote ‘Our Adventures’ cause it sounds a bit more, uh… I dunno. Exciting?”

He points at a drawing on the first page.

“See, it’s the bumbag, the VOR bumbag.” 

“Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region.”

“Yeah. And-” He taps on one of the photos. “The flower. Edelweiss. Like the tattoo. I- Didn’t… You know, didn’t really wanna include a picture of a corpse. And I drew these guys-”

He points at two red and white flags with little question marks floating around them.

“Cause you- Cause it meant she’s either Swiss or Austrian.”

Sherlock nods, quietly, and turns the page.

“Duck feathers?”

“Yeah, cause of the… Duck… Incident. Just before.”

Sherlock smiles.

“Yeah, thought you’d enjoy that reminder.”

“I don’t recall you picking up any feathers.”

“Well, I didn’t. Right then. But they’re from the same ducks, so, uh… Yeah”

“Did you disinfect them?”

“What, the ducks?”

“The feathers.”

“Ah.” Does giving them a wash count as disinfecting? “Sure, just don’t… Lick them. Or something.”

“Wasn’t planning to.”

He goes through the next couple pages a bit quicker. He does stop to stare at the two pages reserved for The Blue Carbuncle. It’s the first one that has a photo of them - just after they exchanged gifts, Sherlock with the ear defenders on and John holding the watch with two fingers. They don’t look too different, but John feels they’re ages younger in that photo. So much happened, in the meanwhile. They grew so much closer. 

They were friends then. 

They're family, now.

That John almost left him alone at Christmas. Now there’s no one he’d rather spend it with.

He brushes a hand on his shoulder. Sherlock’s still looking at the pages. They are among his best. He drew sprawling Christmas lights at the top of the pages, the carbuncle - somehow, he didn’t find a picture of it - and poor Heather the goose. There was the picture of them in a corner, and in a different corner, taped to the page, two receipts. Sherlock was fiddling with one of them.

“They’re from the Oakshott Farm Shop. Technically only the first one is part of the adventure but if I didn’t include the second I’d just be mad at myself for not buying you those biscuits, so…” He pointed at the second receipt. “Proof that I did get them after all.”

After the listeners hounded him.

He chuckles nervously.

Sherlock flips through the next pages at a regular pace. John points things out to fill the silence - ‘it’s the Valentine’s Day card’, ‘so, that’s supposed to be us high-five-ing’, ‘aww, Mercer. You know, I almost didn’t take this picture’ and so on.

Silver Blaze is full of photos. Sherlock, looking out the train window. Them, on the moor, John’s arm wrapped around Sherlock’s shoulders. The Airbnb. Silver Blaze himself. The only drawings are some hoofprints, snaking through the writing. They seem to amuse Sherlock.

He flips a couple more pages.

Dancing Men’s looking pretty good, too. 

There’s the code key, occupying half a page, and some lyrics swirling around it. A photo of Elsie, and one of the four of them, at the O2, before anything went wrong. And at the very bottom of the page, a little anecdote he hesitated to include:

‘That’s the first time you called me your best friend.’

Sherlock’s face falls a bit.

“Yeah, well. It’s not exactly a good memory, the whole Abe Slaney thing, but… Er. S-Silver linings, you know?”

Sherlock doesn’t say anything. 

A few minutes later he’s turning the page on the latest case.

He flips through the white, unused pages. There’s many of them. More than a half. But he didn't find a smaller album, and even if he had…

“That’s uh. That’s like a sort of, to be continued. I- Maybe. I could. Update it. Next year or something. If you want.”

Sherlock slowly flips back the pages, from the latest to the very first case, until he’s looking at the front cover again.

He’s still quiet. He’s frowning, slightly, and his jaw is set.

For a second, John thinks he might be disappointed.

He dips his head to see him better.

“Sherlock..?”

Then he looks at him and John only has time to think, ‘Oh, that is not disappointment’ before he’s being hugged, tightly, though in a somewhat awkward position. John scoots closer so he can hold him better.

“You like it?” he whispers, and Sherlock nods.

He breathes out, relieved, and strokes his back a couple times. He wants to say something, something more, but he can’t put his finger on what, exactly.

“Merry Christmas,” he says instead.

Sherlock huffs a laugh.

“Merry Christmas, John.”

When the hug ends they both pretend he doesn't see Sherlock wiping at his eyes.

“Breakfast?”

“Yeah.” 

He reaches out his hand and Sherlock pulls him to his feet.

“You know, I never realised, but- We have surprisingly few photos together. I really had to dig around. Made Mariana search her phone, too. And it’s what you saw in the scrapbook and two more. I mean… After a year? Weird.”

Sherlock humms.

“Not weird at all, Watson. People take photographs to commemorate certain events or achievements, things that do not occur every day - whether it is a wedding photo or simply an overweight bulldog-”

“Hey!”

“-sleeping in a particularly adorable position. It is a means to possess and preserve something that might soon end, or never be repeated. A souvenir, a ghostly trace of the soon-to-be past.

We spend the majority of our time together. Seeing each other isn't an event of any sort. The photos you did find coincide with outside events - a concert, a holiday, trips to a different city or country. You knew those things would end soon. Our... Partnership, on the other hand, our close proximity to each other, here, in 221B…”

He trails off and looks at him for confirmation.

“Won't. Not going anywhere, mate.”

Sherlock smiles.

“Neither am I.”

Good. 

A year is a year, but…

They just found each other.

“Well... Seeing as this is an event... Wanna send Mariana a ‘Merry Christmas from Baker Street’ pic?”

“Sure.”

John grabs his phone and opens the camera app.

“Alright, I’ll take the picture, you hold Archie.”

“What?”

“Pick him up.”

“Absolutely no way.”

“He’s gotta be in the picture!”

“Not in my arms.”

“Fine.”

He places the phone on the table, propped up on two glasses. They push two chairs together and sit down, John with Archie in his lap.

“Ready?”

He sets the timer, taps on the shutter button, swings an arm around Sherlock’s shoulder and pulls him close, so close their cheeks are pressed together and Sherlock has to grab his shoulder to not lose his balance. I sat on the stairs in the foyer, idly browsing my social media feeds like it was the morning paper—my Cloudburst account was always hopping—and waiting for Bruce to come home. Jon’s Superboy account was logged into finally and he was responding to every Tweet I’d made as Cloudburst, apologizing for not getting on and seeing earlier. Remarking it was nice to see me again after so long. I was smiling at his definite overuse of excited emojis but he was a sweet kid.

The front door opened.

Bruce and Alfred both came in.

I jumped up immediately. “Hi!” I greeted.

“Morning Nora,” Bruce said, sounding like he hadn’t had any coffee yet.

“Good morning, Miss McCloud,” Alfred agreed as I rushed across the foyer to hug them both.

“Morning,” I replied. I dropped onto my heels after tilting up onto my tiptoes to hug Bruce since he was so tall. “How was Metropolis?”

Bruce shrugged. “Hm. Boring,” he said.

I nodded. “I see. Y’know, I'm surprised Clark didn’t come keep an eye on us while you were gone,” I joked.

“Who says he didn’t?” Bruce mumbled, heading straight for the kitchen.

Well, crap. Hopefully Clark didn’t see anything between me and Damian if he did keep an eye on us and report it to Bruce before I could say anything.

“Huh. Fair point,” I relented. “Hey, listen, Bruce? Can we talk?”

“Those words are never followed by good news,” Bruce said, looking grumpy, as he found the half-emptied coffee pot and a mug.

I rolled my eyes. “No. ‘We need to talk’ is never followed by good news. I asked if we can talk and I was careful to phrase it that way,” I retorted. Bruce eyed me irritably over the top of his mug as he took a long drink.

“Okay. Talk,” he said after he swallowed.

I shook my hair out of my face and pushed some of it behind my ear. “Welp, long story short I don’t want to go back to the past, anymore,” I said.

Bruce coughed on his next gulp. “What?” he asked.

I was half-tempted to pull a cranky teenager and say, “You heard me!” but I didn’t. Instead I just shrugged. “I don’t want to go back to the past anymore. I know we still need to close the Time Bombs case and reopen the timeways but once they’re opened I still wanna stay here,” I said. Bruce lowered his eyebrows.

“Why?”

“There are a couple reasons,” I said, trying my best to maintain my cool as my ears grew warm. I covered them with my hair as subtly as I could. Messing with my hair was a quirk of mine so I doubted Bruce would even notice. “One of them is… I think my disappearance is, like, a fixed point in the timeline. Kinda like how in every timeline where Jason meets you as Batman, he ends up dying. Like if I went back to that Time Bomb attack eight years ago, I’d go missing some other way. Maybe then I’d never return.”

“And the other reasons?”

“I don’t want to go back and screw up this future now because messing with time scares me and I don’t know what would happen to you guys,” I continued. Bruce started taking another drink. I waited till he swallowed to continue. “And, lastly, there’s no two ways about it: I’ve fallen in love with Damian and I don’t want to leave him.” I rushed out the last part so it ended up sounding more like, “I’vefallenlovewiDamiananIdonwannaleaveim.”

Bruce had to just stare at me for several long moments while he figured out and processed what I said. During the silent moments I felt my heart rate rising and my hands start sweating nervously.

Once he understood what I said, the staring continued. But this time with raised eyebrows as he figured out what to say.

Finally, he seemed to gather his thoughts. “You’ve… fallen in love… with Damian,” he said.

“Yes,” I said plainly. I kept my sass out of my tone because I didn’t want to provoke him into a parental freak-out and/or a Batdad lecture.

“What?!” he demanded. “When did this happen?”

“Relatively recently,” I answered. “While you were gone.”

“Nora, don’t you think you’re jumping into that lake a little too fast?” he asked.

“B, there’s been attraction between he and I since I got here,” I said. “We just kept staring and sharing these moments of profound closeness and then fighting the feeling that we wanted to be together and I just… I can’t do it anymore.”

“Does he know?”

“I should hope so. The kiss was mutual,” I said, purposely leaving out everything else that happened between his son and me. Ease him into it.

“Oh so you kissed,” he stated.

“Mmhmm,” I said.

There was a pause.

“Are you mad?” I asked finally.

Bruce regarded me for another moment while I twisted a piece of my hair nervously around my fingers. He took a deep breath, set his coffee down, and sighed. “No,” he decided on. “I'm not angry.”

I wondered if I was supposed to ask what he was feeling about the idea of me and Damian dating. Or if he was feeling anything. I wondered if I even wanted to know.

Ultimately, I decided not to say anything. If Bruce wanted to say more, he would.

He took another long drink of his coffee—finishing his mug before pouring himself another one. I picked at the scabs on my knuckles while leaning against the kitchen counter and waiting for him to say something else—to express his approval or disapproval. I licked my lower lip and chewed on it with a crease between my eyebrows.

“Nora, relax,” Bruce said after a moment.

“I…” I said before just trailing off and trying to smooth out my face.

When that didn’t work, Bruce just sighed. “I'm going to go have a word with my son,” he said, taking his coffee with him.

I caught his elbow. “Don’t yell at him, please. We both… we both want this.”

Bruce just set his free hand on the top of my head. “I'm not going to yell, princess,” he said affectionately.

“Promise?” I pressed.

Bruce ruffled my hair. “I promise,” he said before leaving.

I peeled a scab off my knuckles completely—making it bleed again—and headed for the Batcave.

“Madam, we know it worked,” a man at the table said. “Access to the time-stream has been completely locked down. No one can travel through time except at the normal rate. What more is there to fear?”

The shadowy figure at the head of the table sighed. “Two of the missing from the initial attacks eight years ago returned after the secondary attacks now. Nora McCloud and that vigilante. Stormy or whatever her name is. The short one with the blue accents that isn’t Nightwing. There is no guarantee that the others who went missing aren’t also going to return. The Flash. Impulse. Kid Flash. If the speedsters were to come back, time travel would open up again, meaning the changes we made could be undone.”

“So what do we do?” a councilor asked.

“We capture the vigilante. See what she knows. If she’s found out why we went back to the past, we wipe her memory or take her out.”

“And the McCloud girl? She was the daughter of—”

“We can’t touch her,” the woman at the head of the table snapped. “She is practically the Princess of Gotham. We get close to her and Brucie Wayne will find a way to tear us apart. Besides, she doesn’t know anything about the purpose behind the attacks. If she did, the press would have blown that story waaay up before we could stop her. As it is, they’re too busy debating whether or not she’s dating her foster brother—meaning Little Miss McCloud has no idea.”

“Are you sure about that, ma’am? I just want—”

“Silence! I have spoken to her myself. She knows nothing. We don’t need the fire of that pathetic playboy Bruce Wayne burning under us. Everyone in the city knows how overprotective he is of those kids he takes in.”

Damian pushed off the table to find another chair. He sat down near me and took my hand. “He told me you told him how we feel about each other that we wanted to be together. He said he didn’t know what to think or feel about it. We both know it is not his decision on whether or not we choose to pursue a relationship, but I believe his approval and acceptance would be beneficial to both of us. I, for one, would feel guilty attempting to pursue you without his acceptance and I believe you would feel similarly. Though, please correct me if I'm wrong.”

“You’re not,” I said. He rarely was wrong. “I would feel terrible trying to be with you if I knew Bruce really disapproved. He’s like a second father to me and I’ve been trying for years to make sure I make him proud and do right by everything he’s ever done for me.”

Damian sucked the backs of his front teeth. “Tt. I understand and agree.”

Someone cleared their throat nearby. I jumped with a yelp. Damian wasn’t so easily startled and turned in the direction of the noise.

Bruce stood there, barely out of the shadows, arms folded over his chest and watching us.

Dang it, I thought. OG Bats definitely hasn’t lost his stealthy touch.

“Hooowww… how long have you been standing there?” I asked awkwardly, picking at another scab on my knuckles as anxiety took over again.

“Long enough,” Bruce grunted. He pulled a chair over and sat so the three of us formed a loose scalene triangle—none of the distances between us equal. He leaned forward and braced his elbows on his knees, hands hanging in empty space between them. “Kids, you two have grown up into mature, responsible young adults. I don’t say it enough, but I am proud of you. Both of you. And… if I seem…” He scrunched his eyebrows, searching for the right words. “Hrn. Hesitant. It’s because you’re my kids. And… and I want you to be happy but…”

“Not with each other?” Damian challenged, eyes narrowing slightly.

Bruce closed his eyes and sighed, reaching one hand up and pinching the bridge of his nose—something Damian had picked up from him, by the looks of it. “That’s not what I meant, son,” he said. “It’s not that I don’t approve. It’s just—”

OOOOOWOP! OOOOOWOP! OOOOOWOP! OOOOOWOP!

A siren started blaring through the cave. “What the heck is that?” I demanded.

I’d like to thank everyone who’s taken the time to come up with an idea and send it our way. Your prompts are the heart of the Exchange. Without them our lovely authors wouldn’t get to write all those beautiful fics. So, please, keep them coming!

Prompt 5: In the Seam, you can’t do what you want. You just do what you can to survive. When Mrs Everdeen, who never wanted children as long as there were Games, gave birth at home to identical twins, she did what she could: kept one of the girls hidden at all times. And, she taught them to keep the secret when they took turns leaving the house for school or hunting or the reaping. Genre? Drama, romance, comedy, tragedy? [submitted by @567inpanem​]

Prompt 6: Cupids are the guardian angels of the heart. Cupid Katniss is sent to answer Peeta’s prayers that he finds a girl before his mother picks one for him. If she fails one more time, she’ll lose her bow privileges forever. Peeta notices every girl. But as Cupid Katniss spends time with him becoming his friend and confidant, she starts feeling jealous of these unworthy girls. Time is running out. [submitted by @567inpanem​]

Prompt 7: Peeta opens his bakery back up after the war. There are, as expected, lots of female customers who would like to get a little to close to Peeta for Katniss's comfort. Prompt 10: Based on "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift music video: Katniss is Lucas Till's character, she has a relationship with Gale, but she doesn't really like being with him. Peeta is pining for her, like Taylor Swift's character, observing them and think he and K belong together. [submitted by anonymous]

Prompt 12: canon compliant, except Gale isn't pining for Katniss and actually try to support her after the Games, helps her with Peeta and become friends with Peeta. He makes fun of her with Peeta and Prim and all three of them kind of find a peaceful refugee in this awful world where they can act like the teenagers they are. Prompt 13: Peeta is rescued with Katniss, so they're sleeping together even in the hospital (after in Katniss' family bunker too, like her dream in the movie), P helps K find her place as the Mockingjay, they are late at night talking about how they don't trust those 13 people, they visit D12 together, Katniss sing to him, Peeta is working in the kitchens, Katniss sometimes have crisis of anxiety bc she can't believe her family, Peeta, the Hawthornes are there with her... they're together through it all. [submitted by anonymous]

Prompt 14: High school AU based on High School Musical films. Katniss is finally singing after her dad died, Peeta is in love with her the moment they sing together in the New Year. K goes to his school and they've these cute moments like each others photo in theirs lockers and rooms at home, they sing together in drama's club plays, Katniss is at Peeta's games, he's touching her every second, especially when they sing (watch HSM2's everyday), his father and brothers laugh at him blushing when she calls... [submitted by anonymous]

Prompt 15: You wanna marry me?” Everlark arrangement marriage AU based on true story. Madge’s essay submission wins contest on importance of family. Prize: be reunited with family from home, on stage! She invites best friend Katniss to be there for the big big big event. Madge’s cousin Peeta packed for short visit, but once there finds that his manipulative mother set him up with a job and orders him to marry before he gets deported home for overstaying. Prompt 16: The baker hires Katniss to make his deliveries as she walks her trade route. She gets eye opening glimpses of town life and especially of the Mellark family relationships as her job responsibilities grow and she spends more time in the bakery. [submitted by @567inpanem​]

Prompt 17: "We’re always making stupid bets like ‘bet you can’t drink this whole bottle of BBQ sauce’ but then you did and now you’re sick and I feel really bad here let me look after you" prompt? Prompt 20: Gale returns and he and Katniss patch things up. Peeta seems to feel he's lost her to Gale even after they healed together. Katniss won't stands for this, and explains that no matter what, they would have happened anyways. "I'd chose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a a hundred worlds, in any version of reality. Prompt 21: Prompt! One of them struggles to tell the other that they can read minds. [submitted by @sandyeyes]

Prompt 22: Student/Professor. Katniss is stressing out about an assignment and decides to go and talk to Professor Mellark about it, as he’s always been understanding and patient in class. However things turn awkward when Katniss stumbles upon him in his office after hours watching porn on his laptop. Is it deliberate, maybe he needed to relieve some stress or did his brother/friend send him a link to something that he shouldn’t have opened?? Prompt 23: I would love to read an In-Panem AU fic/this would have happened anyway story where we see the beginnings of an Everlark relationship and how it slowly turns into puppy love [submitted by anonymous]

Prompt 24: Canon Divergence. Through the years Katniss can't stop paying attention to Peeta and she's actually aware of it. When they settle as victors in district 12 or when the time for the victory tour comes (whichever you prefer) she can't keep herself away from him and the line between friendship and something more becomes blurry until it disappears. Prompt 25: I have a song prompt based on Maroon 5's Maps. It fits Everlark so much. Peeta was there for Katniss in her dark times while she almost gave up on him when he was at his worst down on his knees. But eventually he followed the map that led to her and they got back together. [submitted by anonymous]

Prompt 26: An everlark fic based on the start of Brooklyn 99 where Jake and Amy were 'rivals' and had a bet going on who will get more arrests. Peeta's end of the deal will be getting Katniss on a date while Katniss' prize would be getting to use his car just like the tv show. You can add twists to make it more everlark if you like. Prompt 50: In an ancient time, grief-strickened 17-yr-old Katniss (fatherless, emotionally abandoned by her mother, just lost beloved sister) walls off her heart, curses the gods for taking Prim, and is severely punished with immortality = unending days of mourning and emptiness in which life has no meaning, until she meets Peeta and learns it’s not years but love that makes a good life. Prompt 83: A witch is more powerful and safe when they join a coven, in danger without one. But there’s a saying that’s been passed down through generations that’s everyone thinks is just a myth; A witch finds their true powers when they find their true love in their coven. The “late bloomer” teasing (b/c she’s never even been kissed) stings. Older boy Gale crosses paths with group, finds he shares common interests with Katniss, they get together to hunt, leads to him casually inviting her out for a real dinner date. Prompt 86: Everlark meet on Survivor. Maybe they are contestants? Maybe one works the cameras and keeps following the other around? One is the host and the other a contestant? They compete against and hate each other? Maybe they form an alliance, but end up thinking the other backstabs them? who knows. [submitted by anonymous]

Prompt 87: Katniss and Gale are about to get married and while Katniss isn't entirely sure if she really wants to marry Gale, she does nothing to stop the preparations. While Peeta, realizing he can't just let Katniss go, does everything to stop the wedding and tell Katniss his feelings for her. Peeta thought he's a hopeless case the day before the wedding until... Prompt 88: Historical Katniss and Peeta hate each other. They attend a masquerade ball and for some reason end up kissing each other. Sparks fly everywhere. Katniss tries to find the man behind the mask but Peeta knows it was Katniss though he doesnt say anything. They end up bethrothed even if they 'despise' each other. Prompt 91: I have a personal headcanon that Peeta was involved in drama, and participated in school plays. Unsurprisingly, he is an excellent actor, often receiving lead roles. This can make two prompts. Canon-compliant: Katniss goes to see Peeta perform. AU: Katniss can’t help but get herself involved behind the scenes, and things spiral. Prompt 92: Modern AU: Katniss is present when her father dies a traumatic death. She doesn’t just stop singing. She stops speaking completely. Prompt 93: Strangers or not. Katniss and/or Peeta hired as trade show model (for ?) to draw traffic to booth. Does the one who hired the other get crazy jealous over all the ogling by strangers? Prompt 94: Smut. Hot, sweaty, passionate, loving, smut. Everlark has to be married and it can only be the 2 of them. No three-somes or switching partners. [submitted by anonymous]

Prompt 95: Modern a/u: Katniss and Peeta are personal assistants to overzealous bosses Effie and Haymitch. They try to coerce their bosses together in order to get some relief themselves. Meanwhile they start to fall in love as their plan backfires. [submitted by @ra3lynn3]

Site-12, Monday Morning. 4:00. January 11th, 2025. Containment area of SCP-5200

Researcher Boyd closed the hatch behind him, and turned to face the containment vault’s occupant. Boyd thought he looked like an old fashioned tramp, complete with bindle and permanent five o’clock shadow. But yesterday he’d looked like a wino, and the day before a washed-up boxer. This look wasn’t new.

Boyd sat down across from the entity, and pulled an empty manila envelope out of his jacket. “They told me that you wanted to talk.”

SCP-5200 pulled itself up to the table, and grinned a toothy smile. “Ahyup. You’ve all been gettin’ anxious about the dreamer, right?”

“Perhaps.” Boyd turned the envelope over in his hands. “What do you know about it?”

SCP-5200 let out a long sigh, and leaned back in his chair. “Boy, you eggheads sure get to the point quick. If I’m going to tell you that, I’ll need to let you know how the world got started out.”

Boyd frowned. SCP-5200 was known for spinning stories to distract from having to answer questions. Usually, it was best to play along until it could be coerced into giving a definite answer.

“Fine. But be quick about it, we don’t have all week.”

SCP-5200 chuckled. “You don’t know how right you are, chuck.”

He pulled a crumpled cigarette from his jacket, and placed it in his mouth. “Okay, okay… so the first thing that happened, was we had the two forces of the universe. Greeks had it on point, y’know? It was the music, and the dreams.”

Boyd nodded, drumming his fingers on his thigh beneath the table.

“So’s they banged, y’know, and they made the world. But, they didn’t fill in all the space, because you can’t fill in nothing forever. There’s a little bit left over from the days gone by.”

Boyd nodded, and pulled a notebook from his jacket pocket, pretending to take note of what SCP-5200 was saying.

“So that’s why this third rock from fun has all the craziness pulled to it like that shit’s on rails. It’s a storage depot for the unknowable. Would’ve worked like a breeze if you guys hadn’t busted up the lock.”

“It was more like a jar.”

“Whatever, chuck. That’s just how you made the smoker’s stupid dream witchery true. When those two kid’s get together, nothing’s gonna be able to stop them. Not even flipping things around one more time.”

“I don’t understand a word you’re saying.” Boyd put the notebook away, and stood up. “If you don’t have anything else to add to your story, I think we’re done.”

SCP-5200 held out a hand. “Wait, sit down a second. There is something I want to give you.”

Boyd stopped at the hatch. “What?”

SCP-5200 reached into its own jacket, and pulled out the manila envelope. “Here’s what a few people have said.”

The envelope is tossed, picked up, examined, and stuffed into a pocket.

Boyd exited the hatch, locking it behind him. Briskly, he set off towards the Records and Information wing, for debriefing and transcription of the interview.

Description and Capabilities:

— Name: Object of Note, Black Portal — Irregularity Cross-reference: destructive, transport?, immobile, locale — Physical Description: A cave in North Dakota, which has an entrance in the form of a flat, non-reflective black wall. Wall is immobile, and does not respond to provocation. Causes immediate death on contact. — Capabilities: Does not move, or take any initiative. When touched, causes objects and persons to be pulled into it, and disappear. — Purpose: Possibly a trap, naturally occurring anomaly, or misunderstood aspect of nature. — Behavior: No behavior. Object not believed to be living.

— Exhibit A: The object. No evidence related to case 1976-34 has been located other than the object itself.

— Current Status: Currently noted, with light guards. Due to remoteness of location, chances of being discovered are slim. — History of UIU Action: Discovered in 1976, by a US geological survey. Fourth Document: Prometheus Labs. (A grant request form.)

PROBLEM The Prometheus Labs physics lab has proven the existence of an object which could be used to dispose of any type of matter harmlessly, at little to no cost past the initial investment to find the object.

SOLUTION In order to locate it, the Prometheus labs team would need additional funding to dedicate most of their mathematicians to this purpose.

BUSINESS CASE Once located, Prometheus Labs will save massively on the disposal of high-risk materials that would otherwise need special handling procedures in order to nullify or put out of sight and mind.

We currently believe that the research object has been written about in the scripture for various religious groups dealing with paranormal activity.

They refer to it unanimously in terminology that describe it as “empty”, and at times like a portal to their underworlds or similar theological concepts. Descriptions generally refer to it as all black, and hostile.

The similarities to the research objects are obvious. As such, we should take precaution against any word of this entity being held, as it may incur an attack by these organizations.

Therefore, we recommend that the currently in-construction Site-12 be selected as the location for the entity, due to its remote location and high security.

Title: Much Ado About Nothing

Materials Used: The piece itself is singular, having been created by the artist and using a method which has not been disclosed, for artistic reasons. It is unique, and the artist does not recommend attempting to replicate it.

Abstract: A black star composed of a non-reflective, anomalous material. When touched, pulls the user into an undisclosed location in deep space. The person is not recoverable, so viewers are recommended to bring secondary entities if they wish to view the contact-making portion of the piece. Should be displayed behind glass, on a white pedestal with a small porthole to allow for direct contact with the object.

Intent: The piece was created as a commentary on how really and totally alone we are in this universe. You can find yourself in any location out there in the cosmos, and you’re not going to catch a ride. You’ll be by yourself, until you die. That's what awaits us up there.

Note: I can’t really display this thing anymore. It’s cool, but nobody really seems to want to look at it. Gonna store it till we can find a use for it.

Ninth Document. (A handwritten notebook page.)

Shadow Child.

Aliases: Shadow Person, Chip, Corpo, Nobody. Note: doesn’t seem to be a nobody. More nothing.

Summary: A being repelled by light, and made of shadows. Very dangerous. Consumes everything in path.

Threat: High. Difficult to avoid all shadows.

Interest: Possible attempt to fish me out:

1. Follows, tracks, and finds me with alarming regularity. 2. No constant physical form. 3. Does not live. 4. Older than oldish dirt.

I can’t explain it. Perhaps it’s a case of the town not being big enough for two. This thing is (or these things are) to be avoided and help sought out to avoid it (or them).

Foundation or other collectors may be able to keep it at bay or remove it. Thing is very old; may have evolved past destructibility.

Location: Unknown. Following me, so it’s close to me.

SCP-5200 leaned back, shaking his shackles. “You know, this isn’t what I hoped you would think of them.”

Boyd didn’t respond, choosing instead to tap his pencil against the clipboard and raise a single eyebrow. None of the usual dodging of inquiry and cat-and-mouse would be tolerated today.

“Man… I’m just trying to help you guys. You know that you’re coming up on the number. You’ve got the child, but you don’t understand it.”

“What’s there to understand?”

“It wants… to turn the clock back. To suck up everything with the taint of the original flaw, the big glitch, that acts as your job security.” SCP-5200 attempted to wipe his nose on his sleeve, but the chains didn’t allow enough mobility. His face twisted as he suppressed a sneeze.

Boyd narrowed his eyes, and made a note. “How do you know? Why are you helping us? You could easily be trying to undermine us.”

“I know because that’s the whole reason I exist. I was made specifically for this moment, right here. For you to find me, and for me to help you out when the time came.”

“Who sent you?”

“Every-frickin’-body that doesn’t want to die when this thing starts knuckling down, dummy. There’s a lot of vested interest in existing for a lot of people.”

SCP-5200 leaned forwards from backwards, and began to whisper. “And, off the record, you guys need the help.”

“What do they know about the object?”

SCP-5200 groaned, and attempted to rub its brow. “Have you not been listening at all? Look. It’s gonna change into something much, much closer to how it originally was. That’s the deal. That’s what you need to prepare for. When that starts, you’ll need to play all your cards right to keep it from going back to how it likes things: non-existent.”

Boyd’s brow creased slightly, as he took more notes. “So, if you’re here to help, do you know what to do if it’s starting?”

“Your guess is as good as mine, chuck. From my end, this is all she, he, and they wrote. Hope y’all don’t die.”

I have a LOT of catching up to do!

I was tagged to do the 57 facts thing by @fayts4 @tabbyrhsims4simblr and @midnightdevotions I think I got everybody if not you’ll have to forgive me my shoddy memory. But I have so many blogs to catch up on I am ready to cry!

1. Simblr is a secret thing for me, only my husband knows about it. Its my own guilty pleasure.

2. I recently became a parent and I am very much planning to have at least 1 more while there is still time!

3. I have done a lot of work on some really amazing stuff, none of which I can ever talk about due to secrecy agreements. 

4. I have a PhD in mathematics, so that proves I am super boring.

5. I tried my first cigarette at age 11, but didn’t touch it again till age 26 which was when I took it up, I would smoke anything from 0 to 10 cigs a day depending on the day I had. I quit cigs this year aged 32 in January. So hopefully didn’t do myself too much damage.

6. At age 29 I started smoking cigars on special occasions those are: my birthday, Christmas, New year, Valentines, and my wedding anniversary. Being the “badass” I am, I inhale every 5th drag for a little extra kick, even though you shouldn’t do that... I have not quit the cigars!

7. I have a younger brother and an older sister, I am the middle sibling.

8. I have only ever had 3 boyfriends in my life. And 1 “fancy man.”

12. When I stopped growing, Acromegaly causes your face and hands and feet to carry on growing... I have size 14 feet. UK size. My hands are large enough that I can grip 4 tennis balls in one hand easily. 

13. I have no tattoos. I have never ever wanted a tattoo. I don’t actually like them very much.

14. I don’t have any piercings anywhere else beside my ears. I have 2 piercings in each ear.

15. I am a huge petrol head. I love cars and I will happily have a discussion with any man about them, or woman if she is so inclined!

16. Due to the facial changes caused by Acromegaly I decided to go and get cosmetic surgery in late 2017 to change my face back to a more softer look.

20. I hated that stupid Pokemon Go craze!! The amount of people who walked into me in the street... That shit was dangerous.

21. My hair used to be naturally blonde, but in recent years its started to get darker, which is why I now use colouring to keep it where it was.

23. While preggers I had gestational diabetes. Which was not fun at all.

25. When I was doing my PhD, somebody on my research team literally took about 80% of my thesis content and used it in their thesis. I had  no time to appeal or go through proper channels as I already had a job lined up, and was due to have my pituitary tumor removed, therefore, my only option was to redo 80% of my thesis. 

26. I am not religious (at least not in any organised way), however, I find the theory of how the universe came into being utterly laughable. A big bang... seriously?? If before the universe, there was nothing, where did the shit that exploded come from? Its bullshit. Truth is, nobody knows for sure, but we’re so desperate to know that scientists will happily invent theories to fit what few facts they have.

27. Despite not being religious, I firmly believe in existence after death. I say existence, not life, there is a difference. I have seen what would be colloquially referred to as a “ghost” when I was 13 years old.

28. I love the old pulp sci fi, things like Lost in Space, and voyage to the bottom of the sea

29. My favourite foods are pizzas. I cannot get enough of them! In particular just bog standard pepperoni

Particularly over custom content and how it should never be uploaded by anybody but the creator or changed or whatever... did I mention how somebody took 80% of my PhD thesis and used it in their work? 1. What’s the maximum amount of time you can sit still with nothing to do?

O: Methinks not more than ten minutes then I has't to findeth something to doth, otherwise mine mind starts to wander in places whither it's best not to wend… 《 nervous giggle 》

2. How easy is it for you to laugh?

G: Being a child at heart and walking ticklish spot makes Greg what has been defined as a “Laughter Disaster”.

3. How do you get yourself to sleep at night?

O: It depends on how not restful I am. If 't be true I doth not collapse in sleep chamber at unreasonable times, I usually taketh time to relax by writing music or reading something. Or I masturbate. Or the three of them and not necessarily in that order.

4. How easy is it to earn your trust?

G: Greg tend to trust people easily but Greg ain’t naive about it. Like what they say, fool Greg once shame on you, fool Greg twice shame on Greg, fool Greg three times and congratulation you’re an asshole.

5. What were you told to stop/start doing most often as a child?

O: Mine mother at each moment toldeth me that I hadst to cease trying to completely replace mine father, not because the lady didst not appreciate that I hadst becometh the backbone of the family but rather because she wanted me to giveth priority to myself once in a while...

G: Sometimes, but Greg try not to. About Greg’s first swearing it could have been calling one of Greg’s classmates from elementary school an asshat. But in Greg’s defense Greg thought it was just a very silly headgear.

O: I tryeth to worketh through mine thoughts, like considering mine assumptions and thinking about the consequence to avoid jumping into conclusions. What I still doth since lest I an emotional roller coaster but at least I tryeth.

8. Do you have a system of remembering names, long lists of numbers, things that need to go in a certain order?

G: Well, mentally placing things on top of each other often helps. Alternatively, sticky-notes strategically placed around the house are a blessing.

 9. How do you deal with an itch found in a place you can’t quite reach?

O: Being rather flexible the problem doest not arise. Unless tis in the presence of the right person, in that case I’d shamelessly pretend I can’t reacheth and taketh advantage of ‘t to receiveth a free back rubbeth, if 't be true thee understandeth what I mean… 《 insert sensual brow wiggle here 》

10. What colour do you look best in? (Does he/she actually look best in that colour?)

G: Dunno, it’s not like Greg mind that much… (Surprisingly he looks handsome in pink, especially in rose quartz)

11. What animal do you fear most?

O: Lest I not afraid of any animal in particular, if 't be true I’d rather sayeth that I feeleth an intense disgust for slugs.

12. How do you speak? Is what you say usually thought of on the spot, or do you rehearse it in your mind first?

G: Greg don’t mince words, in fact Greg like to think Greg be a quite plainspoken man.

13. What makes your stomach turn?

O: Senseless violence. Thus having becometh the progenitor of a race of murderers without mine knowledge hath taken quite a toll on me.

G: Not really, indeed usually it’s up to Silvia to get embarrassed in Greg’s place lol. (I can confirm)

O: Faux pas. And oft coequal myself.

G: 8 because it’s shaped like a friend. Like Greg. (he makes me so cheesy wtf 😂)

O: I suppose I can summarize ‘t in platonic love is ride or kicketh the bucket while romantic love is till death doth thee part.

G: Uh….. Do you take hunger for an answer?

O: At first feelings of insecurity, possessiveness and inadequacy, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Thee doth not wanteth to knoweth what kind of monster I becometh at which hour ‘t cometh to matters of the heart...

G: Well, Greg simply ignore the thing but then Greg will inevitably get passive aggressive. Then Greg will imitate the person Greg envy in some way, either by the way they behave or dress. Maybe even do both. It depends on the individual...

O: I believeth that the answer lies in the question previously madeth concerning mine methods of sleeping.

G: Greg believe in marriage, actually Greg think tying the knot is one of the biggest milestones of your life. Sure, it takes times and a lot of commitment but in the end it’s totally worth it.

O: I most like riding on horseback, but I’d not sayeth no to a boat trippeth especially if 't be true it's on longships.

G: The future.

G: When Greg met Silvia for the first time because Greg often wonder what Greg life would have been like if Silvia had not ended up mistakenly in the penitentiary where Greg was locked up and had not dragged Greg out of there… 《 shudders 》

O: I mean, I tryeth to since lest I a stout believer that tis well enow not to beest perfect. But, at the same time, methinks thither is at each moment room for improvement so I point ‘t out without offending the person concerned so that maybe we can worketh ‘t out together.

G: Incredible to say but Greg is a delicate soul that takes a lot personally. In plain words Greg be very sensitive, please be gentle.

O: I love children, being the eldest brother among other 6 children I has't practically grown those folk and I doth not bethink thither is anything better than to beest in their company. Sure, oft those gents art noisy and clingy but at which hour thee cometh home at the end of the day and thee findeth yourself sooth submerged by their exuberant attachment well, then thee understandeth that those gents very much art the most precious thing ever.

34. How badly do you want to reach your end goal?

G: In case you haven’t noticed yet, Greg prefer to take things calmly so Greg can wait.

O: Well, lest I a sir I like women, there's not much else to sayeth methinks..?

Ch.44: The light from the window

Zelda had to caught up to Link after leaving Illia's house.

"What else do you know?" Link mumbled.

Zelda had to bite her lip, "I don't think you want to know."

Link whined and covered his face. Zelda caught his hand, "Where are we going today?"

Link looked up to the sky in an attempt to hide his embarrassment, "To the Spring."

Link was still blushing when they arrived there.

Zelda kneeled next to him, "Should I give you one embarrassing piece from my childhood?"

Link closed his eyes, "It would ease my heart, yes."

Zelda cocked her head in question, "Let me see," her eyes swept throught the plants around the clearing, "Oh, I know! Once I stole a cake from the kitchen to eat inside a wardrobe. I had been doing that for years now, but that one time I was so sleepy I actually fell asleep in it and by the time I went out half the castle was looking for me and I was walking around with cake in my head and chest..."

Link huffed with her story, but Zelda fell silent, "Something wrong?"

"I just... I only remember Dotour laughing at me and my father red in the face ordering for me to have escorts."

Link frowned, "Sorry, that doesn't sound like a great memory."

Zelda shook her head, "Yeah, I know, but I still remember it fondly.

Link remembered Zelda's night recounts of her childhood, "Because Dotour was there?"

"Yeah, I remember him washing my hair and explaining to me why my father was so mad."

Zelda scooted closer to Link, shoulder to shoulder, "Link?"

"Hmm?"

"I'm friends with Illia."

Link smiled, "Yeah? That's great."

"I told her I will be leaving next week."

Link nodded.

"Link, will you come back with me to the Caslte?"

"Of course."

"Link-" Zelda stopped, she then let her head fall to Link's shoulder.

"What?" Link asked.

"Nothing."

Link could feel Zelda's weight on him, the way her hand sneaked around his arm to fall next to his hand. Link doubted one second, and then let his fingers intertwine with hers.

Link opened his mouth, "Zelda-"

Zelda hummed, "Yeah?"

"Nah, nothing."

Link yawned and let himself fall on his cot.

Zelda rustled on his bed, "Tired?" her hair fell down and Link resisted the urge to touch it.

Link puted, "Shouldn't be."

Zelda smirked, "You did helpt Fado a lot today."

"That was in the morning."

"Till the afternoon. And now you just came back from helping Sera move those heavy chests."

Link wrinkled his nose, "It was nothing."

Zelda fell silent and let herself look at Link's face. His breathing was even and Zelda rolled back to the bed, "Good night, Link."

Link mumbled an answer but Zelda didn't understand it.

Link could feel his feet pulsating in rythm, his eyelids felt heavy and the idea of sleeping was the most tantalizing thing he could think of. Along with Zelda's weight on his side, her hair dancing in front of him, her smiles and the way she always calmed herself when she grabbed his hand.

They were going back. He was going back, there was no question about it. But now Link had a question stuck on his throat and he was choking on it. Are you...? Do you...? What if she said no?

If they were in the Castle then he could avoid her and let her live her life like she wanted. Here in Ordon, it would make him a shit host to leave her on her own.

But the question.

The question ate at him.

Link sat on his cot and looked at the bed. Zelda had her head in his direction and her eyes shone.

"What?" She murmured.

Link was about to shake his head and go back down and let her sleep. But her eyes were shining in such an amazing way, and her hair framed her face with such contrast...

"Zelda," Link started, and his voice got lost immediatly.

"Yes?"

Link opened his mouth, "This could end up in the most awkward manner so I want you to know that you can totally turn around and go to sleep at any moment whatsoever, all right?"

Zelda crinkled her eyes, "Okay."

Her voice was so soft.

And Link was trembling.

"Are you-" Was she? "Are we-" Were they? "Have you been flirting with me for a while now?"

Zelda's eyes opened up so much Link was tempted to let himself fall and pass this all as a sleepwalker antic.

Zelda rose on her arms and it was unfair how pretty she looked with the light framing her from the window, "Link-" she cut herself, she looked at Link as if wanting to see inside his head, "I-" Zelda fell to the bed, "I have been flirting, yes," she said to the ceiling. "What about you?"

Link was biting his lips in order not to smile, "I sure have been, yes."

Zelda covered her face and shook her head, "Good."

Link covered his smile, "Yeah, uhm, just wanted to make sure, you know."

Zelda made a whining noise and Link accommodated on his cot.

Link wasn't sure how one was supposed to go back to sleep after confessing... Oh.

"Zelda."

Zelda showed her head from his bed, "Yes?"

"I really like you."

It was the first time Link saw her so red. Zelda his half her face.

"I really like you, too," Zelda said, her voice came out muffled but Link smiled.

Her hair fell from the side of the bed and Link-

Link raised his hand and caressed it.
