Is there something that you wouldn’t write? Not in the sense of “I can’t write this because I can’t imagine Barry/Len/blablabla being this” kind of way but in the “I refuse to write this because [numerous] reasons

Eh lots of them, but I don’t tend to moralize them too much. There are things that are definite squicks for me and I can list reasons as to why for sure, but there are just as many things that are just as bad or worse from a purely moral perspective that I’m more than ready to hop on board for.

One of the biggest things I really don’t enjoy and wouldn’t write is anything that is or approaches too close into being a master/slave dynamic. Really not into it and wouldn’t write it for numerous reasons. 

If you’re confused about how literal or vague I mean that, I mean both literal master/slave AUs and ones that set up that dynamic without calling a spade a spade. 

To dissect why I don’t like it, we can talk about a somewhat unique example I stumbled into when reading an AU (not for coldflash). The author setup a world where prisoners could be sold off to citizens for labour, and the citizen had complete control over the prisoner. There were restrictions on it etc, but that was the gist of the idea, complete with shock collars for obedience.

What I don’t enjoy about those narratives is predominately that they paint this dynamic as romantic. They could be doing a lot with this type of setup. It’s fucked up and horrifying and the author tends to show some of that, they know they’re using an extreme worldbuilding trope and get that this system is Bad. But instead of then using it as a commentary on society and the existing penal structures, most of the people using this type of trope, and this particular author too, instead write the narrative in a way that makes it so the focus of the story isn’t on dismantling systems or rebelling or overthrowing this horror, but is instead all about how this society is more or less okay so long as the characters fall in love. They don’t say that explicitly, but in this case the one citizen (slave owner) is one of the only ones who isn’t evil and who decides to treat his prisoner (slave) kindly, and of course the master and slave fall in love. And sure, they bemoan how bad their society is, and get the slave’s freedom from the system, but nothing about it changes, no injustice is resolved.

It just - grinds my gears a bit. Because I fundamentally can’t wrap my head around or accept the very real fucked up concept that is more or less saying  it’s okay to be a slave owner so long as you treat your slave kindly and maybe fall in love with them. Am I supposed to cheer for this guy, who thinks it’s okay to own another person, even if they’re being ‘kind’?

Ugh, it’s just not for me at all. And if it’s someone else’s cup of tea, I get the overtones that might draw someone to it, to wanting to experience that level of control over oneself, or wanting to dominate someone to that extent, but the narrative ways it’s expressed just set me on edge.

What I do sometimes enjoy that is a step adjacent to this is the same dynamic where one person (the master) is clearly fucking evil and gets a horrible comeuppance. If a third party has kidnapped the hero and is hurting him and then the hero is saved or, ideally, saves himself. I don’t mind the world-building as much when it’s clear how evil this is and there’s no sugar coating it. 

And I don’t mind a similar dynamic if both characters are kind of forced into it. Like a “you got yourself captured by your enemies and yeah I’m one of your enemies but now we have to pretend and play these roles for me to keep you alive because contrary to what everyone thinks I don’t actually want you daed so just play along and we’l get through this.” That’s fundamentally different to me in terms of what it says about the characters, and can be fun. It also isn’t taken to a societal level normally, which tends to help. 

Same with arranged marriage type situations, those are fine for me in most cases. I also don’t mind stories that deal with sex work, or arrangements that are mutually beneficial (e.g., we’re both in prison and I’ll protect you if you sleep with me) because there’s autonomy on both sides there. Stories where one character is a prisoner to another are… they can go either way depending on what happens and what the situation is for them to be in that predicament?

But yeah - that’s my big one. And anything that veers too close to it. There’s some issues I have with a lot of A/B/O stuff and there’s a lot of reasons there, but one of them is is that the worldbuilding tends toward this essentialist type stuff that also squicks me similar to how a master/slave trope does. 

I also don’t really touch teacher/student stuff. I used to like it when I was a student who tended to crush hard on teachers so I get it, but I wouldn’t write it because I’m an educator now and it’s a weird squick. I would write it if it was like - Barry is a young and new college prof and Len is his mature-age student and Barry keeps hitting his head against a wall because you can’t fucking crush on your students even when they keep flirting with you during office hours especially because they’re definitely only doing it to get a better grade but then they don’t get together until after the term ends anyway. Then I could probably be on board, but that’s like, hyper-specific.

Idk, if you have any specific tropes you want to ask about, feel free. Not that I will write them, but I’d tell you whether I would or not.

What do you think are some of your biggest flaws/shortcomings as a writer? Like what are things that you're trying to improve upon for yourself or what things do you try to seek out advice from others about? Just curious :)

I mean, I don’t really seek advice because I don’t have anyone to seek advice from. I look to works of writing that I respect and attempt to mimic those things, but–and this is going to sound arrogant and conceited and that’s fine I guess–I’ve never been in a situation where my peers have been on the same level I am. That isn’t to say I’m the best writer in the world, because I’m not, but literally I’ve never been in a place where my peers and even teachers have anything to offer me in the way of helpful criticism. More often than not, I am leaned upon to be one of the few people that are able to edit and critique someone else’s work and actually be useful.

When I would submit stories for review, my profs would either, one, give me 100%s, which is silly because I did not deserve that, or tell me they have nothing to say because it’s “so good.” And if I sound irritated by this attitude, I am. I have grad students telling me my work is so good they can’t give me critique, yet my advisor won’t let me take graduate level classes despite the fact that I am utterly wasted with my peers, who do little more than write stories for class because they’re required and not because they bother to practice their craft everyday. And they consider themselves “writers.”

So no, I very rarely seek out advice because it has been a very useless endeavor a good majority of the time.

It has, however, taught me to be very self-reflective and progressive in my own attempts to learn and improve. I go out of my way to improve myself when I feel I am lacking, which is something a lot of writers apparently don’t do? I mean, if I were to be honestly critical, I’d tell you that everything I do is sub-par, because I know from experience that if I work hard enough, I can always come up with something better. I go in to edit a piece having already accepted that I could likely re-write the entire thing and it’d be done better, but only the fact that I can’t do that my whole life and hope to be successful stops me from doing so. 

As far as specifics? It depends on the piece and what my focus is, really. Writing isn’t so much a game of what is best so much as it is picking what’s best for the story you’re trying to tell. My aptitude for writing overly emotional scenes might be well-suited to a story about relationships, but is only going to drag in a fantasy adventure story, where each scenes needs to serve as something to pull the story forward. Part of the mark of a good writer is being able to utilize different strategies for different scenes. It’s why my writing style will vary vastly from a romantic scene to an action scene. This isn’t a fault, it’s a purposeful change in tone. 

But I’m not here to give advice, despite how I am used to doing so. As far as technical things I know I can improve on, I tend to put too many tags in dialogue, which I have been working on remedying for the last year or more. I also tend to focus far too much on eyebrows and facial expressions, which is a hold-over fanfiction habit that I am ruthlessly trying to break myself of, because me saying a character looks curious does not then require me to tell you how furrowed their eyebrows are–if a character looks curious, most people are more than capable of imagining what that looks like. I also tend to have too many one-sentence paragraphs, which harken back to my fondness for emotional melodrama. I’ve also gotten really lazy about describing locations, which is another bad habit picked up in fanfiction, as it is rare that description is required at all in fanfic. But it makes me all the more proud when I do a description of a place that I really enjoy reading, because it reminds me how much it can add to a story. What other annoying things do I do? I have a few words that I repeat too often, but every writer goes through that and there will always be words I get into the habit of using that I then have to break myself of, only for others to take their place anew. That’s what editing is for I guess. What else do I do? I dunno, there are a lot of things I do that are shitty. I’m sure there are plenty more. 

But I get the feeling you’re looking for something more… vast? Like me coming in and saying, oh I’m bad at dialogue, or romance, or character building. But I don’t think I’m really very bad at any of that, as I work very hard to make sure that I’m not butchering any concept I’m going to write about? Like, if I’m writing a romance, I go out of my way to make sure that romance is well-executed by looking at examples of what good romance looks like. Like, I do research and seek out sources and references. And I also practice a lot. And I’m a boss at dialogue when I get my tagging reeled in, so that one is a moot point ;D 

I mean, maybe I’m a bit long-winded? But… I like reading long things, so I guess that fault is up for debate and varies from person to person. I think maybe I get a little repetitive in concept–as in repeating the same things every couple of chapters because I’m afraid the reader won’t remember. So I guess I do ask about that, as I will ask my family when they read my novel to tell me if there are certain ideas that get repeated too often or if they need those reminders. But that’s still up in the air so… *shrugs*

I… am really bad at introducing minor character appropriately, which I again blame on fanfiction. And by minor characters, I mean things like pets. When you write fanfic, you can introduce these characters without explanation, which means I now have horses in my novel that go through half of it with no names and then suddenly they have names and I have not figured out an appropriate time to introduce their name formally into the narrative. 

A lot of the issues I guess I’m working on stem from separating fanfic practices from writing original pieces. Fanfic has it’s positives, don’t get me wrong. I could write essays on the benefits of fanfic. But it does have a few quirks specific to its form that I now have to combat, hence my uncertainty about whether I’m elaborating on an idea too repetitively or not. In fanfic, that’s not an issue you normally have to deal with, as the writer is usually dealing with themes already apparent in the canon. 

I guess fanfic is my biggest weakness. At least as far as writing original stuff, lol. Funny though, it doesn’t work the other way around. I tackle writing fanfic the way I do original work and I get twice as much praise. Which basically tells me that fanfic shortcomings boil down to laziness the community has just… accepted. 

I’m lazy. My writing has become lazy. Almost all my fanfic is lazy, even Serendipitous Fate to a certain extent. You’d probably all be shocked to read my original novel and all the detail and precision that comes with it, lol.

yes! physical change! you got the main ones, but literally, in narnia they grew up with access to all the same food/medicine/excercise, to the point where adil probably wasn't that much shorter than the others, because the only variation there is genetics. then on earth... he's going to be on rations, where probably even emma isn't (even if she doesnt end up working at the halcyon, mr garland would be able to find a work around). so he's going to be shorter, probably have deficiencies in certain vitamins which would impact his immune system, so it a good thing he's living in the country right? and if the prof's house has farmland, he'd be doing some manual labour, and he has a horse so adil could learn to ride again, so he'd be strong, but diet and stress (bearing in mind hes going to be a mess for a while when he first gets back) has a massive massive impact on muscle mass, bone integrity, immune strength and organ function (and that's one reason why poor people get sick more)

and then toby (and to an extent freddie) has access to any food he wants basically. although i cant imagine what rich people thought was good food in the 40s was actually good. but he would never really have to restrict his diet. he'd still be around the same height as he got in narnia. but smog! and he starts smoking! his lungs are going to be a mess from all the air pollution and lack of exercise, he's going to have significantly less muscle mass (whether that makes him chubby or skinny is really like flipping a coin though, but by the time he he's late teens he's probably going to be pretty gangly). hes going to cough a lot, may develop chronic colds. stress also would have a massive impact here, (parents/being a kid again/dating(?)/adil/being gay) and that will fritz his immune system (because *sometimes* immune systems like to try and fight your mental illnesses, which obviously doesn't work, isn't that fun?). also staying indoors all the time makes your immune response stronger to allergens

but basically they're all gonna be shorter (especially adil), skinnier, and sicker than in narnia

for adil's family... he deserves to see them again yeah. the professor could help him track them down, but they'd probably be living in london. so maybe at first he asks the others to just... keep an eye on them. emma would probably be the best at this tbh. and then one of them let's him know that his sister or brother is sick, and he goes to see them, and maybe emma or toby goes with him (depending on when this happens; of he's still awkward/confused with toby then he might be more comfortable with emma. also she lost a family member when she was young so she sort of *gets* it, but later on would def be toby). one of the other really confusing things for adil's family would be that, he just seems to care about them all too much. if he really is their great-nephew, then he's never met any of them before, so not only does he know wayyyy to much about them, he's being more emotional than a stranger should be?

just for fun, say one of his siblings has dementia, and they only remember things from a long time ago. and they spend the whole time insisting that adil is their adil. and no one believes them, BUT. maybe that means its safe for adil to tell them, even an amended version. if they say he's crazy no one will believe them anyway, but it might make that sibling feel special, having a secret like that. even if they forget it later
