More fallout from the James Somerton debacle; local person reluctant to respond to a post about the racism of disco revival because most of their argument revolves around anecdotal or observational evidence and they're too eepy to collect citable sources

#ok so the gist of my complaints are (and bear in mind that this is not peer reviewed so take EVERYTHING I say with a grain of salt)#that yes Disco was the subject of a racist hate campaign in the US at the tail end of its run but outside of the US it never truly died.#Heck #it didn't even die in the US #just evolved along with the shift to electronic music production over big-band stuff. But I digress #Meanwhile in Europe Disco enjoyed several decades of evolution into HI-NRG and Italodisco and of course House Music #which led to such classics as Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now); the Rhythm of the Night; and many other dance hits #produced and performed by people of colour. And it is that musical environment that Daft Punk (who are French remember) got their start in.#not to mention other more traditionally disco sounding songs of the 2000s like the works of Sophie Ellis Bextor; Kylie Minogue and others.#So anyway I get that the musical industry especially in the USA is racist as balls (has been forever)#but going straight from 1979's “Death of Disco” to Random Access Memories' success is erasing 3 and a half decades of musical history #in favour of a heavily America-Centric narrative.#Anyway subscribe to my nonexistent patreon so I can bullshit my way through more tags like this.

So does anybody else ever think about how Loop felt the need to demonstrate that the party's deaths wouldn't have any effect on the loops. I know I do but that's besides the point. Anyway I don't think Loop actually needs to bathe, they just like to feel included.

I just saw one of your fave games is What remains of Edith Finch and I’m so happy! I feel like its a lesser known game but i loved playing through it. I’m so happy to know more than just my small friend group know about this game!

Sorry this isn’t a question. Also want to say that you’re art is amazing and the development of the designs is so interesting to see. Also the way you draw intimate scenes have so much emotion to them. I love the Aj and rarity kissing comic so much, you can just feel their love for each other ;w;

I highly, highly, highly recommend What Remains of Edith Finch to anyone interested in narrative game experiences/"walking simulators." It's one of those games that was handcrafted with nothing but love. Every room you explore is just... real. The way the light flows in and makes the colors of the living room, the kitchen, the bedrooms glow. Playing the game is like walking through your childhood home as an adult and seeing how the dust clings to everything you once touched. Also genius-level gameplay mechanics, ones that can make you completely empathetic with the character you're embodying or feel completely complacent in their tragedy. It's really not fair to call it a walking simulator because it's so much more and so much smarter than that.Everyone talks about the fish one.

The theme of death and memory and storytelling and the burden of invisible trauma and self-fulfilling prophecies is so affecting too. The ending made me cry.

PARALLEL!! In S1E8 of mp100, Reigen reveals the delightfully baffling ethic he works by. When a woman tells him that a fortuneteller told her that there was a spirit on her shoulders, Reigen instantly disapproves of someone telling her that and doing nothing about it. And of course he considers himself so much better than this fortuneteller for... also lying to the woman, but giving her a massage. So he's allowed to lie to people, but he draws the line at not helping them. That... that's perfect. That's what he does with Mob, after all. He lies to Mob constantly about being a psychic, but he considers it fine because he's helping Mob by doing so. The woman had real pain in her shoulders; Mob has real pain in his heart. Reigen helps with both by allowing them to think he's a psychic.

Shortly after that, in S1E10, Dimple makes this remark while possessing a security guard:

IT'S THE EXACT SAME ETHICS. (okay, it's slightly worse because it's just harm reduction rather than actively helping, but Dimple is on the right track, okay?) Dimple's allowed to possess people, to steal their bodies (temporarily), but he's not allowed to let them get hurt. Letting the body he possesses be damaged is a step too far. Reigen's allowed to lie, but heaven help people who lie to others without helping them.

Just. Yeah. Dimple and Reigen both use people. Reigen lies to them, Dimple possesses them. Reigen twists the mind, Dimple twists the body. And yet they're both disgusted and offended by people who would use people without care for their welfare. They're better than that. They're not irresponsible.

ok but can we talk how in Legendary, Antinous asked a question. he’s being as rude as possible but “when’s your tramp of a mother going to chose a new husband” is a question. a question that Telemachus does not want to answer. and yeah, the immediate follow up of “why don’t you open her room so we can have fun with her” makes it seem rhetorical, but rhetorical or not, it’s definitely a question. and I’ve always wondered why Telemachus is offended by ‘tramp’ when the ‘why don’t you open her room’ thing is a million times worse.

But what if Telemachus wasn’t offended that Antinous called Penelope a tramp? The suitors have probably been saying stuff like that for ten years, he’s used to it. What if, more than anything else, Telemachus wanted to make them forget about the question they asked? What if he was just trying to distract them?

i like how we all collectively agreed that covid does not exist in any of our sims stories

#i'm just thinking about the weirdness of media that came out from 2020 through like... 2022 #even in shows that didn't address covid you can just feel its presence and the show immediately feels dated #the lack of extras in the background... or all the extras are wearing masks but the main characters aren't... toilet paper jokes......#anyway it made me realize none of us attempted it even if our timelines are true to life in every other way #to me it almost feels like it would be disrespectful to write about? but i don't know why because it's just an illness #i write about all kinds of illnesses and death #it just feels different for some reason #dude i just remembered frank gallagher on shameless died of covid........#they made their main character die from a disease that didn't even exist on earth when the show began #is that wild to anyone else #idk i just find it so fascinating how all types of writers chose to handle covid in their work and that includes sim stories

MAN I'm seriously so sad about season 2. Bc I wish act 2 had the same emotional impact on me as it appears to have on so many others. But rn I'm just somewhere between unable to care and actively annoyed by some of those writing decisions. Seriously the more I think about it the less I like it.

#act 3 come through please 🙏#I don't think it can salvage some of the things I have contentions with but still... please...#don't ask me about the silco vander flashback with jinxs + vis mom #or the bizzare choice to do so much of the storytelling through this weird music video format they've got going on #completely stripping it of the weight these plot beats could've had if they were... normal scenes #and also missing the point of how the music was used in season 1 and what made it so effective #bc it was complementary to instead of replacing the storytelling #seriously don't ask me about these things I will spontaneously implode on the spot #whyyyyy would they recontextualize season 1 like this with that flashback #to me it kind of ruins the character dynamics and themes in s1. it just makes me so sad you have no idea #also what even are they doing with Jinx rn for real #aaarghhhh just... so many things that are making me scratch my head #also I'm so terribly sorry but I could not care less about Isha sorry lol #like i get that its sad conceptually but she was such a non-character that i struggle to feel impacted at all #same with sky tbh. i thought her role in s1 was alright but there is so much emotional weight put on her now #in terms of her relationship to Viktor but that was barely established so it's weird to have her around #and clearly you're supposed to care but they haven't given me much reason to #isha and sky were non-characters just there to die to further the development of other characters #they didn't really have anything going on on their own and that's just a type of character and plot device that does nothing for me #also i thought the war between zaun and piltover + internal struggles in zaun bc silcos gone would be the main focus #but that stuff seems so sidetracked rn #also sorry i dont like what they did with vander and warwick either. that man should've stayed dead lol #it honestly just makes his death feel less impactful and i dont know what this is supposed to do for the story or the themes???#that just feels like a pointless plotline that is taking up time that could've been spent on other things #i just... i could go on like this for a while like there are so many things that just puzzle me #it's so weird considering how tight and thematically consistent season 1 was #let's see where act 3 goes but... i kinda have a bad feeling about it ngl #obv im glad others are enjoying it and this is just my opinion! also a lot of this are probs just my personal tastes anyway #arcane spoilers

With more POWER, you can protect your teammates. With more POWER, you can defeat the Aberrant criminals who kill and extort and farm children for Rapture. With more POWER, you can avenge Jaeil. With the right kind of POWER, you could reform the Aberrant Corps from a killer, his killer, into a true hand of justice. You could impose Goodness across the entire world. With enough POWER, you wouldn't even need violence to do it.

And on the smaller scale... POWER can erase your mistakes. Good? You could be perfect.

#oh sayeon...#my own thoughts on the matter are 1: i didn't actually like that line lol #it was too on the nose #i forgive it because of the great character moment afterwards... but only just.#2: i think sayeon sees power/her own powerlessness as a barrier to being a good person in practice #she can't do most of the things she believes are good as a relatively powerless corps trainee #pretty much all she could do was confront aberrant criminals and now juni is telling her she's too weak to do that #& if she tries people will die because of her #damn this is becoming an essay. so becoming strong enough to protect good people and stop bad ones is sayeon's immediate “Power = Good”#and climbing the corps ranks to use the power she'll have at the top for good (lol. lmao even) is her long-term one.#double feature bc climbing the ranks requires power #3. BUT. rereading and she is HARDCORE fixated on jaeil. rn that logic is being co-opted into post hoc justification for her revenge mission #and then of course 4. her self esteem and using her power to wipe out any mistakes. but that requires further research #sayeon lee #hand jumper #asks
