Hi guys~! ⛅👋
Long time no see! Much longer than I ever intended, in fact. Truth be told, I wanted to make a public post sooner, but I've had a lot to catch up on in terms of notifications and messages since logging back in a few days ago. I've also made some changes that I will address shortly, but first of all I wanted to thank those of you who have reached out with so much care and understanding during my absence. Adjusting has been a slow and fragile process for me -still is-, and I sadly haven't responded directly to everyone yet because of it, but I wanted to say how much I appreciate your patience and support nonetheless. 🥹 🙏
Long story short, I was gone for five months due to a huge burnout, then progressively found my spark again somewhere along the way and have since mostly recovered. It was my wonderful friend @drones-of-innocence who reached out to me outside of Tumblr, and her sense of initiative is largely the reason why I managed to make this post in a somewhat reasonable delay. 😅💖 With that said however, I must also mention that I've deleted a lot of stuff from my page and have removed most of my work from the public eye as well. This may seem quite drastic and frankly a little unsettling, but I assure you that it was a thoroughly considered and reasoned decision! The thing is that I was still getting lots of notes on these drawings everyday and… To put it simply, I didn't want that anymore. 🙇♀️ Experiencing popularity was very detrimental to me in the long run and I needed to put an end to it for the sake of my own wellbeing; at least for now.
Which brings me to my next point.
After mulling it over for a while, I've decided that I would not be returning as an active creator in the Mario community this time around. 👐 Making fanart for this franchise (with such a high and continuously maintained degree of involvement) had a lot to do with my health's decline and I've come to realize that I wanted to direct my focus elsewhere going forward. For that reason, there are things which I know will never be repeated again in the future, both in regards to my art and online presence in general, but that's alright. Things change, as they do and should. I'm looking forward to reuniting with folks and would be very happy to stay in touch with those of you who wish to message me privately. Like my lovely pal @istadris said, what matters most about any fandom are the friends you make in it. ☺️
And speaking of which-
@ody-and-fanatu That's so sweet of you, thank you! 💗 I'm glad you've enjoyed my contribution to the fandom. It was fun while it lasted! 💫 My visual ideas may be gone from my page, but most of my written posts and replies are still there for anyone who wants to revisit those at least, so there's that! And I'd also like to answer some of the asks I still have in my inbox at some point. Knowing that you hold my art in such high regard makes really happy! 🥰 Unfortunately, the other account that I have is reserved for my professional work and I prefer to keep them separate from one other, but the good thing is that I intend to go back to this blog occasionally. Hoping to see you around! Cheers! 🥂
@heiressofdoodles Thanks, I appreciate that! ✨ I'm honestly doing much better than I was earlier this Spring. Back then, I was running on empty and on the verge of crashing without even knowing it. Being in constant physical pain was one thing, but feeling mentally and emotionally drained on a daily basis was another entirely, and something had to be done. It took me a moment to really figure out what was wrong, but thankfully I realized very quickly what was causing it and applied the breaks with all my might. One of my main priorities now is to be more alert and respect my own boundaries to make sure that this never happens again. 🥲
@keakruiser Thank you. 🙏💐 I'm just glad to have found my footing again. Feels good to be able to create freely.^^ Hope you're doing well too!
Special thanks also to @pianokantzart, @jelly-fish-wishes, @katlyntheartist, @triniji and @wahooitsamee for their kind words. 🫂 Your graciousness and consideration means a lot to me. 💝
As for all the nice people who sent me anon comments and well wishes, I tried to summarize my thoughts as best I could in this update, but if there's anything else you'd like to say or know, don't hesitate to ask me anytime! Now that I feel like myself again, I think I'm gonna hang out on Tumblr for a little bit. I'll be excited to see what you guys have been up to in the meantime! 🤗 Wishing you all a very good day and pleasant Fall. 🍂

woop woop new inutile update
as much as i know this fic is a LONG HAUL fic. i do not dilly dally. i like to get into the meat of things pretty quickly. so here's some MEAT!!!
also, this week's chapter has a piece of CUT CONTENT??? i wanted to make this scene work so hard in this chapter. but then literally Everything in this little drabble below was covered by a handful of different scenes later in the fic, and done better. and then i wrote the housemaiden population's Attitude towards siffrin different so this is kind of out of theme now
but i also didn't want to delete it? there are a couple jokes i like and it's cute.
so here you gooooooo - ! this can be read either before or after the chapter on ao3, either works. and no content warnings for it as far as i know
________
A distraction would be nice.
There are a few clubs and activities outside of classes that you’ve been interested in. The most interesting one to you is a romance book club. Surely if you read enough of those kinds of books, you’ll start to look around for a bonding partner of your own, right? That’s why you haven’t done it yet. You just don’t know the steps. If you see examples, it’ll get you thinking about it!
And that’s an easy Change!
You walk into the library and see a few Housemaidens chattering over a little table together. The librarian listens in and leans over to offer their own opinion once in a while, but other than that it’s a very private affair. You approach the table, shy.
“You were Housemaiden Mirabelle, weren’t you?” One of the older Housemaidens gets up and shakes both of your hands. “The one from Dormont?”
“Yes!” You’re already nervous. Great job. “Do you mind if I sit in on your book club?”
“We’re reading something a bit mature,” says a very tall Housemaiden with a flashy set of bonding earrings, “but you’re welcome to try it, if you’re not squeamish.”
Oh. Hm. That makes the club feel less exciting, actually. But!! You don’t want to be rude, so you sit down anyway. If you don’t like it, you can just not come back the next time.
“This is what we were reading, this week!!” The youngest Housemaiden at the table pushes a heavy anthology at you. When you were told mature, you were expecting a paperback with a wet, shirtless man on the cover, but this one has a dark brocade pattern carved into a very high quality hardback.
“Oh…!” You inspect the book further. The edges of the pages are painted, so the book looks lightless when it’s shut. The inside shows a bunch of short stories, all centered around a different ghost or monster. Lots of five-dollar words in there! But even with a brief skim, the stories are all pretty interesting. And gory! Every chapter has intense title illustrations, all pen and ink, brooding.
Oh, oops! There’s the mature part, in all its illustrated glory! You flip the page quickly.
… You un-flip it curiously. Is that a werewolf?
“I’m surprised she hasn’t left yet,” the older Housemaiden whispers as you flip through, “you didn’t start her out easy.”
The tall Housemaiden hums at you. “Getting scarred for life over there?”
No? It’s actually pretty interesting. You… don’t like how these Housemaidens are looking at you, though. It’s like you’re about to be eaten alive. If they’re trying to be welcoming, it’s not working too well. But you did kind of crash their meeting… maybe you’re being rude. Is it more rude to leave now, or to wait until you’ve given them a fair shake?
Okay. Your chest is all tight up. Did you forget to take your medication today? Is that why you’re overthinking this? Don’t panic, don’t read into this situation, just excuse yourself and leave. It’s easy to leave!!
…
It’s not easy to leave!! They’re all looking at you like they want to smack you with hammers…!
A loud thud next to you interrupts your spiral. You swivel your head to check, and…
Ugh, it’s Housemaiden Traveler. Now you have a headache, too.
The taller Housemaiden also seems to be put off by them. “Um, can we help you?”
“I’m also here for the book club.” Housemaiden Traveler folds their hands on the table. “I would like one (1) book, please.”
Wordlessly, the youngest Housemaiden scoots the big book from your hands to Housemaiden Traveler’s. They stare at it vacantly.
“What does the front say?”
The tall Housemaiden sighs. “We’re not going to read it for you.”
They stare blankly at the other Housemaidens before realizing they’re serious. He looks down at the book without any recognition. Cautiously, they crack open the book and immediately shut it closed again. Oh no… did he turn to the werewolf illustration first? That’s a hard sell!
“I don’t like that book.”
“Then you won’t like the rest of our books, either.” The tall Housemaiden pulls the book away from Housemaiden Traveler. “Do we need to make the flyers more explicit? That this is specifically about horror and monsterbonding stories?”
“Your flyers were mostly about the romance,” you admit.
“… Wait.” The older Housemaiden points to the bulletin board with all the event flyers. “Were those flyers for our group, or for the club that gets here in half an hour?”
Oh.
You did come early, that’s right…!
“Wrong club, then.” Housemaiden Traveler gets up out of their seat and scuttles off. You watch them leave. Were they really trying to come to the romance book club, too? He doesn’t look the type…
Once they’re out of view, the other three Housemaidens explode into laughter.
“Can you believe him?”
“Oh Change, I’m sorry, tiny one,” the tall Housemaiden pats you on the shoulder. “That’s what it looks like when someone’s not up to speed. You’re obviously fine.”
“Here, actually, if you like that one - "
You’re shown more books, of varying intensities. You’re the most interested in the horror anthologies, but the parts where the hero bonds with the monsters are fun too! It’s too bad there aren’t any monsters around you could bond with. Then you might be interested. Or maybe you wouldn’t. Maybe it’s fun because it’s not real.
As everyone continues to pile recommendations onto you, you look over your shoulder. Housemaiden Traveler stays at the door. Watching your group. You both exchange a look. He gives you a thumbs-up.
That was… strangely nice of them. To take the fall for you. Since they wouldn’t be… affected by it. Right? That feels right. Why do you think that?
Either way, you’re probably not going to come to this exact book club again. It’s not like you want to be friends with people who aren’t so welcoming to newcomers. And this wasn’t even the club you were looking for in the first place! But… at least you got bailed out of one awkward conversation.
… Bailed out? By who? Mirabelle, you need to give yourself more credit! You did that all on your own. Nobody else is even in the library, who would have bailed you out?
#isat#if you read the cut content first you'll be sucker punched by the actual chapter#if you read it second it'll be a cute little balm from the chapter#choose your own experience >:3

What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?
I actually really wanted someone to ask this question. I'll answer from two different POVs, a reader and a writer.
As a reader, something that turns me away from fics is punctuation/spacing. Something I learned in school was that every paragraph should be around 5-7 sentences. Obviously, with fiction writing, it's a little looser but try to steer clear from page-long paragraphs. They can be hard to keep up with, sometimes.
Usually, as long as it's nothing crazy, I look past spelling errors and stuff, but I personally use Grammarly (the free version) and just have it enabled on my laptop (it's also great for school papers if you're still in school, FYI). I honestly don't look over my writing more than once most of the time, but the big stuff is marked in red and I can usually catch it before posting.
Also, if you don't feel comfortable/don't want to swear in your work, just don't. I've seen some other people say similar things (and I don't see it nearly as often anymore) but when people use "#%@*(" instead of swearing it pulls me out of the fic. There's non-swears you can use as alternatives and they flow better in my opinion.
As a writer, I'd say don't force yourself to write things sequentially. A lot of the time when I get the initial idea for something, I write a scene and work my way around it. For Days Into Decades, I wrote my beginning, then wrote some nonsensical scene that'll end up as my ending, and did some big scenes scattered throughout as my middle. Now, I go back through my doc and reread what I've written to pick and choose what I want/don't want to use.
Also, don't write on social media when you're creating a post. What I mean, is use something like Google Docs, which saves automatically, in case your device crashes or lags and deletes everything. The amount of times I've flat-out rage quitted something because I've lost like 2k of thoughts is uncountable.
I really like Google Docs and work pretty much exclusively on there when working on my drafts. I'm bad at labeling my docs, but trying to work on it more given the sheer amount of 'untilted documents' I have to search through when I'm looking for a specific old project. It also just works well with what I'm using, because I have a Chromebook (mostly because it's the closest I could get to a Nokia-level of durability).
At the end of the day, what really helps is keeping with it. I cringe at the thought of this, but my OG fanfic was a PJO x Avengers Tower AU with my own OC named "Paxton, but everyone calls me Pax". It had clipart and I used Pic Collage and I had a linked Instagram filled with Batman memes. No part of it made sense and because I wrote on my (barely functioning) 2015 Samsung (in 2017) it was riddled with spelling errors and every other sentence was an Author's Note filled with random emoji's.
My writing compared to then, even compared to a year ago, has completely changed. I've probably written at least five pages a week since I was thirteen. Now, almost twenty, I feel really confident about my writing style and the things I publish. I also usually ask for comments so I can get feedback on what I've written (and because I really like talking).
If anyone has any specific questions or wants me to check out their work (doesn't have to even be fanfiction, or it can be for a fandom I've never even heard of) feel free to DM me. I'd be happy to check it out when I'm free.

⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ ➛ out of the woods 9
dhanishka and logan find their closure at the end of the day. which, to them, is all that matters now.
notes/warnings: okay. is this it? i think so. wow. i love them so much im reviving my old much darker plot? yes. so if you love out of the woods, don't worry, they'll be home again soon :)
previous / masterlist
Sitting down in the meeting room, I straighten out my dress and adjust the way I'm seated about four times before feeling comfortable. Olivia sits next to me as she flips through her files, the door opening reveals Charles coming in with Fred Vasseur, who immediately gives me a sad smile. I stand up, move over to shake his hand, and let him pull me in for the classic kisses on either cheek.
"I'm so sorry, Dhanishka." Fred grips my hand, sincerity dripping off his words and painting his face, "I should've kept a better eye on everyone, done some checks... I feel horrible."
"Don't worry about it," I squeeze his hands back, giving him a sad smile, "you could've never anticipated this, none of us could've ever anticipated this. I have lost no respect for you, but because of what happened during my time with Ferrari--I had to leave."
"I understand. As we discussed, you have always been a part of our family, and I wish you all the best in your future." Fred gives my hand a final squeeze as some of the investigators from the FIA come into the room. I move to sit next to Olivia, watching as Charles takes the seat on my other side.
I'm so not ready for this.
"Welcome to the meeting of the FIA versus Fadel, Marina, and Ferrari." One woman says softly, everyone's attention drawn to her, "We will be discussing both sides of the argument and then move on to a vote to hand down the verdict. After the verdict is determined, appropriate fines will be placed within five hours."
After introducing everyone, she continues, "We will start with Mrs. Piastri-Norris' defense of Dhanishka Dubey."
"Thank you," Olivia stands up, brushing off her dress skirt as if it's crumby, which it's never been, "As a reminder, the original protest was lodged by myself and Charles. We lodged this complaint after Scuderia Ferrari employees failed to retrieve Dhanishka from the medical bay following her crash in Imola on Sunday, the nineteenth of May. This investigation was determined to be punishable and to be handled by Ferrari which prompted the investigation to be prepped to be closed. However, on the Ninth of June, at approximately 21:45, commotion in the Scuderia Ferrari garage prompted The Stewards to conduct a wellness check."
Olivia pauses, then continues, "Inside the garage, Aakash Fadel, Dhanishka Dubey and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, Lando Norris of McLaren, Logan Sargeant and Astrid Marina of Williams, and Myself of RedBull were found amid an argument. After the argument was separated, the FIA conducted an investigation. They found Dhanishka's Head of Mechanics, Aakash Fadel guilty of breaking team orders and multiple FIA codes concerning purposeful mis-engineering of Dubey’s car. They also found the Head Personal Relations Manager of Logan Sargeant guilty of strategizing against a driver as well as bribery the Scuderia Ferrari Engineers to comply with her plans."
"Throughout this investigation, all parties except Fadel and Marina have cooperated. With Fadel and Marina being found breaking FIA rules, we are gathered here today to determine if they are guilty." Olivia straightens herself out once more and clasps her hands together, "Mr. Vasseur collected data from Miss Dubey's car, as well as radios between the team and documents on the cars performance they tried to prematurely delete--which are all in this first file you were given."
The many people around the table flick their hands to the first set of papers and begin thumbing through them, "Everything on those pages is important, but for reading ease we went through and highlighted everything that was an explicit breach of contracts."
I hate the fact that I can see a lot of highlighted sections on most of the pages.
"With this substantial evidence, I feel there is no need for me to make a case to prove Miss Dubey was specifically targeted." Olivia sets her palms down on the table, "it is now up to the committee to determine the way they will punish Mr. Fadel and Mrs. Marina. That is all, thank you."
As Olivia sits next to me, she squeezes my knee with her hand. I brush a hand through my hair, nodding to her and glancing across the room to where Charles sits with a pensive expression thats almost impossible to read further. But the knit in his brow tells me all I need to know.
There's no defense from Fadel or Marina's group, but just before the meeting is closed--Astrid herself stands.
"I'd like to only say one thing," she clasps her hands together, "Williams has been struggling for a while, good PR is a great way for a team to build funding."
"And so you sabotaged another driver?" Olivia quickly counters, standing up as well, "you put Miss Dubey's life at risk more times than I am willing to count for what? Dimes on dollars?"
"Olivia." Charles hums and Olivia sits down with a forceful huff, my hand flying to hers and squeezing it tight in thanks. Astrid is flustered and bites out,
"Well, at least her and Logan's PR stunt worked better than yours."
And I can see Olivia's jaw tick. She hadn't told me much about how her relationship with Lando started, but I knew unlike mine with Logan hers was more... forced? Contractual?
But they were married now so it wasn't like they hated each other after it.
The meeting draws to an uneventful close and while the group deliberates on punishments, I meet up with Logan in the hall. His hand slips firm around my waist, a kiss to my hairline as he smiles.
"Ready for contract negotiations?" He hums against my lips right before I pop a kiss to his, then lean down to wipe the lipstick off.
"Let's get out of here." I grin.
See... Williams had announced me as their second. But with a team quickly going bankrupt and no plan to save it, Logan and I chose to jump ship together. James could find another pair of drivers to screw over, I was done with being someone elses toy and Logan didn't even speak to James anymore.
And so, with two leases on new apartments (one next to Oscar's in Monaco and one in a small Indiana town) we had decided to swap to Indycar. And luckily for us, Kyle Kirkwood had put in quite a good word with a team I knew Logan would be happy with.
"Good morning to you both," chimes a voice over the Zoom call, my screen loading in to show Rene smiling happily at us--the bright red of Prema's office walls behind him making a warm glow cast across the screen.
"Good afternoon to you in Italy!" I smile, Logan greeting him as well. Conversation is quick, the contracts just being sent back and forth to be signed before Logan and I are off to pick up some food for Olivia's second attempt at having everyone over her house.
Halfway to the store, I get a phone call from Olivia.
"Bad news first: I burnt the cookies." Olivia chimes over the car speakers as I answer the call and I laugh, jotting down the ingredients she asks me to grab so she can make a second non-burnt batch (even though I knew we'd probbaly still eat the burnt cookies anyways.)
"Good news," Olivia's grin is audible, "we won the case."
"No shit," I laugh, "Astrid didn't even have a defense, and then thought the best thing to do was insult you. What did they get fined?"
Logan reaches across the console, intertwining his hand with mine as we continue on the main road. His hand is a heavy warmth as his idly runs his thumb along the outside of my hand, the other hand firm on the bottom of the steering wheel.
"Split between everyone involved it's about five hundred thousand pounds. They're paying for majority of the car damages and medical bills as well as general FIA fines." Olivia shuffles some papers and I can hear Lando yelling something about Oscar and Lily in the background before Olivia laughs under her breath at her husband and continues, "Astrid's banned for life, so is Aakash. Most of the engineers involved have small fines and then they're also banned for the rest of the season. If Ferrari rehires them next season they're on a 'probationary' period."
"Christ." I whisper, Logan lowly humming as I glance towards him.
"Enough about that sad shit, though." I can imagine Olivia waving a hand through the air before she pauses to shoot some sort of insult to her brother--who responds with a sharp but confused "fuck you?"
Olivia laughs, then I hear her come back towards the microphone as she says, "How did the contract negotiation go?"
"I'll miss seeing you around the track, but Logan and I are fully set to drive for Prema next season in IndyCar. We just have to stop by Williams to drop off some paperwork after we get the groceries."
"Wonderful." Olivia grins, "We'll see you soon!"
With a kick, Logan comes into the apartment with two duffel bags, drops them on the ground and disappears back into the hallway. It's several weeks later, just after Singapore, and Dhanishka's busy working on fixing up the little apartment in Indiana. Logan wasn't supposed to be home until Monday night, early morning post race meetings keeping him late. Dhanishka knew he'd been really looking forward to this meeting, hoping it would get him out of the funk of no response he'd been getting from James and Williams as a whole.
Slowly setting down her paint, making sure it won't fall, she moves to the hallway.
"You're home early," Danishka cheers, swiping sawdust and paint splotches off her hands. She peeks over her shoulder, then pauses when she sees Logan drop a helmet case unceremoniously onto the floor. He's got a shit ton of stuff piling into the foyer, more than she's expecting, and she hesitantly asks, "Did you get the stuff out of the storage unit?"
Silence meets her. Dhanishka pauses, slowly moving into the foyer where Logan just kinda stood, a slow shuddering breath leaving him, "Logan?"
"So, you know how I had the meeting with James?" He asks, and when Dhanishka hums a yes, he rolls out his neck and groans, moving forward. Her arms open, a soft 'i'm covered in paint' leaving her before her boyfriend is all swaddled up in her arms.
"Dropped me." He murmurs into the skin of her neck and Dhanishka hums. She had seen this coming since she'd pulled out of her contract, all communication with James and Williams had instantly fallen through. Alex had seen it coming too.
"I'm sorry, baby." She whispers, kissing his cheek, rubbing his shoulders, "But hey, now we can go visit your friends?"
Logan lifts his head, smiling, pressing a kiss to her lips. An long, lingering thing, a seal, and his hands slide up to cup her jaw as he leans back.
"And we can do what we want, now that we have the apartment all to ourselves." He murmurs against her lips and Dhanishka grins, pressing a few chaste kisses to his lips.
"We're free." She whispers, and the two of them fall into giggles in the warm sunlight. There's a bit of a rocky world ahead, figuring out where to go, but with two contracts signed and the other two voided fully now, they have a blank slate to begin working on. Starting with the apartment, then their friends, then the world of racing. They have time to truly breathe for the first time in years.
No goals to chase down with a hunger. Just a pair of lips to chase with love in intertwined hands and maybe a hidden promise ring in a sock drawer Dhanishka had found weeks back.

Part 1 Part 2
Summary: Geralt and Jaskier had been friends for over two decades before Geralt forced them apart. Afterwards, he’d looked everywhere. The bard was nowhere to be found. Not even magic could find him. What had happened to his friend? ao3
--
Eight years into their partnership, Geralt was commissioned to rid a village of a nasty foglet that had taken up residency in a swamp at the centre of the neighbouring forest. The blacksmith, Filip, lived closest to the forest edge and had three young daughters who he feared for. He had collected money from the villagers in order to afford the Witcher’s services and had insisted on showing Geralt the way. He’d said the forest had many low-lying bogs and marshes, especially during this time of year.
Jaskier had been eager to join the Witcher, despite knowing that his outfit would return ruined, yet he’d been relegated to the role of babysitter.
“Come on, Geralt!” He whined, watching the Witcher swing his swords onto his back and collect the moondust he needed.
“No.” Came the simple response. Jaskier huffed.
“Honestly, why can’t Filip hire someone from the village for a night or leave the kids on their own? It’s not like they’re infants, and there’s three of them for goodness’ sake.”
“All of them have yet to reach the age of ten,” Geralt said in that rumbling voice of his as he walked up to the bard, gear on and a vaguely scolding look on his face, “and why hire someone to babysit when we’ve got a lovely and willing nanny here for free?”
Jaskier’s jaw dropped dramatically and he sputtered, trying to get past the offence and form a coherent sentence in response to Geralt’s shit-eating grin.
“You - I - listen here, Witcher - while I am lovely, there is no - how -“
The Witcher simply patted Jaskier on the head a bit harder than necessary, and stepped out of the room Filip had given them to get prepared.
“Ready?” The blacksmith asked. He stood in the doorway dressed in a thick, wool coat, hood over his head and straw-blonde hair peeking out from under his coif. He held a glass lantern in one hand and a sturdy, steel sword in another.
“You won’t need that.” Geralt grumbled, walking towards the man. Filip took what Jaskier knew to be an involuntary step back. The bard still winced. There was still a ways to go in Geralt’s image rehabilitation he was learning.
“I could help.” Filip countered weakly. Jaskier admired the man’s bravery, most tended to let the Witcher do what needed to be done with no care for his return or survival. Jaskier also didn’t doubt that Filip could have been of help. The man stood tall, with rounded shoulders from years of smithing, the thick coat only making him look bigger. He could definitely have been of help if-
“Silver swords kill beasts, your steel won’t do much harm.” Geralt said, walking past and heading to the door. “Better to just stay out of the way.”
Filip paused for a moment.
“Yes, well, I think I’d like to take it. For my own peace of mind.”
Geralt studied the man over his shoulder before seemingly accepting that there was not much else to say on the subject and the two left. Jaskier tapped his foot uncertainly before running to the door and swinging it open.
“Oi! Witcher! I am very much not willing and this is very much not for free! I am expecting compensation!” He yelled out to the shrinking figures.
“Fuck off, Jaskier.” Jaskier could just make out Geralt’s gruff but amused reply through the whipping of the wind. He smiled and returned inside, only to be faced with three pairs of large brown eyes. Startled a little, he smiled tentatively. Unlike their father, all three girls had reddish-brown hair and gentle features.
“You must be Filip’s daughters.” He said in way of greeting. He received an eerily unison blink. “Right uh…you should be in bed.”
“Where’s daddy gone?” The tallest one to the left asked.
“He…he went to go show his friend something.” Jaskier responded, trying not to worry the children.
“That man is a Witcher.”
Jaskier paused, not really knowing what to say and eventually settling on a slow “yes, he is.”
“Daddy’s not friends with Witchers.”
“Well, he is now.”
“But Witchers can’t have friends.”
“Now that’s just not true. Who told you that?” Jaskier asked, a bit peeved. They just blinked again and didn’t respond. “Ok, well, that’s not true because I’m friends with a Witcher.” He huffed, whether or not the friendship was mutual was still a bit in question for him.
The girls stared at him silently and Jaskier was honestly at a loss. He hadn’t had much experience with children, apart from singing the occasional fairy tale or nursery rhyme.
“Would you like me to play you a song?” He asked, fingers twitching to hold his lute.
“No.” They all said monotonously. Alright, really, were all children this difficult? And this…synchronised?
“You really should be going to bed then.”
“Can you paint?” The smallest one asked suddenly. Jaskier frowned at the question, a bit confused.
Thats how Geralt and Filip found him three hours later. Paints and unfinished artworks scattered around the floor and at the centre of it all, a very colourful bard. He sat on the floor, legs spread out as three auburn-haired little girls stood around him, paintbrushes in hand.
Filip laughed loudly. “I just bought them all paints and parchment two days ago.” He commented, taking his coat off.
“You don’t say.” Jaskier responded sarcastically as one of the girls poked at his temple with a green brush. He had rolled up his sleeves and trousers to give them some more space to work and also to avoid as much paint on his clothes as he could. It hadn’t worked very well as evidenced by the many drips and smears on his purple doublet. His face, arms and legs were covered in mostly yellow smudges, with a couple of green and pink accents here and there.
The girls hadn’t reacted much to their father’s return, nor to the intimidating presence of the Witcher. Speaking of, Geralt was currently leaning against the wall, arms crossed, looking very entertained. Jaskier tried to communicate with his eyes that he was in dire need of aid, yet the cruel man did nothing but observe the multicoloured bard and the three little girls dancing around him.
“Ok, girls,” Filip said, coming over and kneeling beside them, gently removing a paintbrush from the youngest’s hand, “time to say goodbye and go to bed, hm?”
“Do you like our painting, daddy?” She asked, blinking those big brown eyes at him. They all looked very pleased with their work. Filip’s eyes looked over to Jaskier, giving him a once-over and smiling apologetically.
“Yes, love, it’s gorgeous as always. Now bed?” He tried again, reaching out to the others. Jaskier didn’t know how happy he was at being called an “it” but decided to hold his tongue for now. The brushes were all handed over. They themselves were smeared with paint as well, nowhere near as much as the bard though. He was more canvas than a bard at this point.
Filip told Geralt and Jaskier that he’d wash the girls - and their sheets - tomorrow and that they could have the bath for tonight, both men in desperate need of a wash.
Geralt, in a rare show of mercy, allowed Jaskier to go first. He sat by the wall, listening to the bard complain about how difficult the paint was to scrub off. He couldn’t help but let out an amused huff occasionally, earning a sour look from the bard.
“Oh, how you revel in my misery.” He muttered. Geralt rolled his eyes.
“Now we know that you’re not cut out to be a nanny after all.” Geralt teased.
“All things considered, I think I did an alright job.”
“Jaskier, you’re yellow.”
Being glared at by a wet bard sitting in yellow water was not the most intimidated the Witcher had ever been.
Not long after, Jaskier stepped out of the wooden bath and Geralt stepped in.
The Witcher melted into the tub as Jaskier’s nimble fingers threaded through his hair. Albeit, a bit rougher than usual. He had started using his own soaps and oils on Geralt, leaving his hair soft and shiny. He could tell Geralt liked it, despite his complaints that it left him smelling like rose water and cloves. It was a pleasant scent though.
“Why’d they paint you yellow?” Geralt asked placidly, eyes closed. Jaskier laughed softly.
“I told them what my name meant. I was meant to look like a field of buttercups, I presume.” He replied fondly. Geralt hummed. They bathed in silence for a while until Jaskier said softly; “the second eldest one is called Julia. She told me the name means strength.”
Geralt said nothing, sensing the bard’s mood had changed.
“I had a sister once.” Jaskier continued. Though surprised, Geralt made no comment. “Her name was Julia.” Silence fell again as Jaskier gently pushed Geralt’s shoulder. The Witcher moved at the pressure, allowing the bard to tilt his head back and rinse his hair off.
“Julka przed samotnością nie odczuwa lęku, bo to dziewczyna pełna wdzięku.” Jaskier said, more to himself than to the Witcher.
“What does it mean?”
“In the face of loneliness, Julka is not afraid,” Jaskier whispered, recalling the old saying, “because she is a girl full of grace.”
Geralt clenched his eyes tighter, not knowing what to say in the face of Jaskier’s gentle grief.
Geralt had stared down that same face of loneliness. Could he say that he’d confronted it fearlessly?
Jaskier ran his fingers through the Witcher’s hair one last time and gave it a hard tug.
“That’s for calling me a nanny again.” He remarked weakly. Geralt opened his eyes, watching Jaskier walk away and change into his night clothes.
The face of loneliness seemed to blur.
Filip allowed them to stay the night and they left early the next day. Geralt was prepping Roach when Filip’s three young girls ran up to him, the one in the middle holding a bag of coin. The blacksmith was crouched in the doorway, watching them with a small smile.
“This is for you.” The one in the centre said very seriously, handing over the payment with an air of importance. Not an ounce of fear showed on any of their faces. Geralt felt vague concern over their survival instincts.
“Er…thank you.” Geralt said awkwardly, taking the money. He was about to stuff it into Roach’s saddle before he thought better of it and placed it gently into his breast pocket, patting it to reassure the girl that he’d keep it safe. She smiled brightly at him and the three of them blinked at the same time. Geralt could only blink in return, not knowing where to go from there.
“Goodbye, Jaskier’s friend!” They announced and scurried off. Jaskier was just coming out of the house as they ran past, giggling. He jumped out of the way with a yelp, eyes following them bemusedly. Looking back to Geralt, he raised a brow. The Witcher simply shrugged. Jaskier laughed.
No, loneliness did not feel as present anymore.
—
Eleven years into their familiarity, Jaskier asked a question.
“I wonder what it feels like to die.”
Geralt had sensed his miserable mood all day. He’d been quiet and he hadn’t touched his lute or hummed a melody and strangest of all, he’d done what Geralt had told him. He’d stayed at the camp when Geralt had taken a contract to get rid of a wild boar and he’d collected firewood with no complaints when told.
Geralt sensed Jaskier’s unhappiness, he knew something was wrong, yet he didn’t know what to do, didn’t know how to help. The very fact that he wanted to help, instead of revelling in the silence, came as a surprise. Jaskier’s statement was even more of a surprise. The casual way he said it jarred with the reality that this was the first thing Jaskier had said in hours.
They stared at each other from across the fire between them. Jaskier’s cornflower eyes lustreless and not expectant of an answer.
“I know what it feels like.” Geralt responded, own voice gruff from disuse. He could tell that he’d startled the bard. Jaskier’s blue eyes suddenly cleared and glinted with concern.
“How…how do you know what it feels like to die?” Jaskier asked and Geralt was surprised by the emotion behind his words.
“There are many ways to die, bard.”
Jaskier frowned.
“How do you know what it feels like to die, Geralt?” Jaskier pressed.
“I do not know what death feels like, but I am familiar with the journey.”
Geralt didn’t know whether he was skirting around the question on purpose. The initial response to Jaskier’s statement of a question had come unbidden and honest. Now he could feel heat under his skin and an urge to sneer and turn tail. He couldn’t do that though, not now, not with Jaskier as he’s been all day.
“Geralt, you-“
“Jaskier,” He cut him off, then stopped himself. He took a breath, “I can’t imagine a Witcher who isn’t familiar with the experience.” Jaskier shut his mouth and remained silent, an unspoken offer to continue. Geralt accepted the moment of quiet, taking the opportunity to arrange his thoughts and suppress the grief that had suddenly swelled in him.
“When boys were recruited to become Witchers, they underwent mutations that most did not survive.” Jaskier nodded, this Geralt had told him before, “They put elixirs, poisons and mutagens into our tea for days beforehand and when we were immobilised, they injected them directly into our veins. Most who did not die immediately, died by the third day. Those who did not die by the third day, went mad from the pain -“
Geralt stopped, hesitating, eyes drifting to the writhing flames between them.
He remembered their glassy eyes, unseeing. Nothing existed but their agony. They’d scream themselves hoarse, shredding vocal chords and vomiting out blood. He knew that he must’ve been the same but he could not remember anything he did while undergoing the mutations. Nothing existed, nothing mattered, but the torment.
Geralt looked back at Jaskier, who’s gaze remained strong and level, though sad.
“After we went mad with pain, they injected us again. We were all restrained, of course, otherwise we would have torn our skin off to find some relief. This round of mutagens induced seizures, hallucinations, and in our weakened state, our body had to fight the viruses. On the seventh day, three out of ten boys woke with cat eyes, the rest were dead.”
Geralt closed his eyes for a moment.
“I did not…I woke up with human eyes. The mutagens hadn’t worked on me to the extent they had worked on the others. I was uniquely resistant.” The words sounded bitter. “They gave me a couple of extra rounds and that’s why you won’t ever find another white wolf, bard.”
Jaskier remained silent. Geralt saw tears had slipped down his face, the reflection of the fire turning them gold. Geralt couldn’t stand the thought of tears being spilled for him but he stayed quiet, he found he had no more words to give.
“That’s not dying.” Jaskier finally said, voice unwavering through the tears. “That’s not dying. That’s torture. That’s something that no one should go through, let alone a child. You don’t know what it’s like to die, Geralt, and you won’t know for a long time to come.”
Geralt didn’t know who he was trying to convince.
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
“Jaskier,” The Witcher tried to make his tone gentle, “Witchers don’t retire. I know what it’s like to bleed out. That is likely my fate.” Jaskier flinched and looked down at his hands, clenched around each other, knuckles white. Golden tears slipped between his fingers.
“What does it feel like to bleed out?” He whispered so quietly that Geralt wouldn’t have heard him had he not been what he was. He frowned, but complied.
“You’re thirsty and your tongue feels swollen. Your vision becomes distorted and blurry. You feel a numbness as your head pounds with pressure. You can’t stand for long, so you’re left bleeding out on the ground, trembling and sweating, feeling like you’re going to vomit.” Jaskier’s shoulders were trembling. Geralt couldn’t stop. “You feel like you just want to rest your head forever.”
Finally, Jaskier broke, a sob breaking out past his lips, only for more to follow. It felt like the whole day had been building to this breaking point and Geralt itched to hold him. Let Jaskier release all that had been welling inside him. Geralt stayed, staring at him through the fire, sure that his own grief was showing.
“Geralt?” Came Jaskier’s small voice, head finally rising to look at Geralt. His eyes were red and tears fell freely.
“Yes?”
“Has this happened since we’ve met?”
A pause.
“Once.”
“You didn’t tell me.” His tone wasn’t accusatory, yet it sounded hurt.
Geralt suddenly felt guilty. He hadn’t thought it information that Jaskier needed, or wanted, to know. He’d clearly been healed and the next time they had run into each other had been months after the incident. Geralt himself hadn’t thought much of it. Yet now he felt guilty, it felt as if he had withheld something from the bard. He didn’t know why the thought of him keeping secrets from the man sparked a pain in his chest. He couldn’t stand to look at the hurt in those blue eyes so he looked away.
“I understand why you didn’t, Geralt, I don’t blame you…just - just please -“ the bard’s voice broke. He took a moment to breath in, pressed the heels of his palms into his eyes. “Please tell me, whether I’m around to help or not. I can’t - I can’t be a part of your life and not know. I -“
“Okay, I will.” Amber eyes locked with blue, reflecting the same flame. They gazed at each other for a time. Then, the bard rose on unsteady feet, rounding the fire and sitting beside the Witcher.
“I meant what I said. You won’t know death for a long time, dear friend. You will live for a good while yet.” He stated with no room for argument. Geralt couldn’t help but smile.
“Does destiny will it?”
“No,” said his friend, “I do.”
And so they sat for the rest of the evening. Golden eyes and golden tears.
—
Fourteen years into their friendship, there was a meadow.
It was spring and the meadow was blanketed by buttercups and dandelions and daisies and wild lupine. It was a messy quilt of colours that beckoned the bard forwards. The Witcher had taken notice of Jaskier’s love for spring, he’d taken note of a lot of things. He watched Jaskier run into the field, voice bubbling with laughter.
“Geralt look at this! It’s exquisite! We have to break here.” He was grinning at Geralt in his faded blue doublet. Geralt ached at that smile. He reluctantly agreed. How could he not?
That’s how they’d spent an all too rare afternoon lying on a sunny patch of grass. Geralt listening to the bard talk and hum, feeling the gentle heat from the sun-warmed ground seep in through his clothes, and when he opened his eyes he watched. He watched birds flit between trees and leaves shuffle in the breeze. He watched the bard blow a dandelion, blue eyes following the fluff as it glided through the air. Then those blue eyes turned to him and Jaskier smiled.
“You know what I’ve always wanted to learn, dear friend?” Suspecting another long Jaskier ramble, Geralt closed his eyes and hummed noncommittally. “I’ve always wanted to learn how to braid a flower garland.”
“Hmm, you don’t already know?” What with Jaskier’s love for spring, Geralt would have assumed that something as simple as making a flower crown would have easily found its way into the bard’s skill set.
“I suppose I’ve never had the opportunity.”
“Hm.” Geralt responded, mulling it over. They lapsed into a calm silence, well as much of a silence as one can get with a humming bard collecting flowers.
It was noon and the sun was overhead, its brightness filtering through his eyelids.
The humming stopped and he heard an excited “Geralt?”
“What, Jaskier?” He sighed.
“Teach me how to make a wreath.”
“No.”
“Oh, come on, you grumpy Witcher.”
“No.”
“But just look at these beautiful blossoms, it’d be such a shame not to put them to use.”
“Flowers have no use to anyone other than bees. Unless you’ve found some verbena or white myrtle.”
“How cynical of you, I can hardly believe it.” Geralt snorted at that. “Flowers have many uses, some of which I will detail to you now.”
“Please don’t-”
“Flowers are used for beautiful arrangements, placed at the centre of dinner tables or on mantelpieces, for magnificent perfumes that attract even the most stoic, and they create the most darling garlands, of which I am dying to learn the craft and am imploring my dear friend to teach me.”
Geralt groaned and opened his eyes to glare at the bard who was grinning cheekily at him.
“You are a pain in my ass, bard.” He acquiesced, knowing that Jaskier would take it as the acceptance that it is.
Sitting upright, he saw that Jaskier had already collected a bundle of wildflowers. Cornflowers and daisies and a myriad of others lay between them as they sat crosslegged, facing each other. Geralt’s hand immediately drifted to the cornflower nearest to him.
“It’s easier when you have a circle of string to wrap the stems around,” Geralt began, glancing back up at the sun-lit blue eyes looking right back at him, “but we’ve no string to spare. So once you’ve picked your starting flower, you pick another and wrap the stem a way’s down the stem of your first. Then you pick a third and wrap it around the stems of the first two.”
“A bit like braiding.”
“More like weaving,” Geralt explained, already a couple of flowers down his chain, “and then you keep adding more.”
Quiet settled between them once more. Geralt looked up every so often to check the bard’s progress, watching his nimble fingers weave his crown of flowers, rarely faulting. His eyes would wander up to Jaskier’s face, the bard’s brows frowning in concentration. The Witcher allowed himself a small smile. Jaskier had once told Geralt to alert him whenever he’d do this, hating the thought of wrinkles between his brows. Geralt of course never did. After all, it wasn’t his job to look out for the bard’s skin when it wasn’t being threatened by beasts or cuckolded spouses.
Geralt finished his garland first, realising that it consisted mostly of blue cornflowers and yellow dandelions and buttercups, broken up occasionally by reds.
“Complementary colours.”
“Hm?” Geralt asked, looking up at the bard.
“Yellow and blue. They complement each other. Honestly, Geralt, it’s simple colour theory.”
Geralt levelled him an unamused look, sending him back to work. Not long after, he watched the finishings of Jaskier’s own crown. An eager gaze slid up to Geralt’s face, eyebrows raised suggestively.
“No.” Came Geralt’s instant response.
“Please Geralt.” Jaskier whined. “No one’s here, your reputation is safe.” Geralt grunted, scowling at the bard whose big, blue eyes were pleading with him. With a sigh he reluctantly agreed. How could he not?
Jaskier’s own wreath was more varied than Geralt’s, with white daisies and purple aster and multicoloured poppies. Geralt let Jaskier shuffle closer, raising himself up on his knees so he could crown his Witcher in blossoms. Geralt watched his delighted face as he arranged the flowers just right, fingers grazing and pushing back the Witcher’s white hair. Geralt resisted the urge to lean into the touch. The gentle hands fell to his shoulders, warm gaze falling to look into yellow eyes.
“I’d write a song about this, a Witcher in a flower crown, if I didn’t think it’d be very unpopular.”
Geralt growled, glaring up at him.
“Ah, yes, and also because you’d gut me on the spot.” Jaskier added on. “I must say though, you look very dashing.”
Geralt didn’t say anything to that. He continued to stare up at the bard, glad that the man was happy, and content to be in his presence in a rare moment of peace.
“Now, my dear, I must wear yours.” Jaskier said. Geralt blinked then looked down at the wreath in his hands. Jaskier sat back, awaiting his floral coronation. Geralt smiled softly as he placed the crown on Jaskier’s head. It was a bit big for the bard’s head and pushed his fringe further into his eyes as it slipped down his head slightly. Snorting, Geralt pushed the brown hair from Jaskier’s face, fingers brushing his cheek as he pulled back. He found himself longing to touch him again but pulled away at the look of wonder in the bard’s eyes.
Jaskier went on to make another garland for Roach, making a show of crowning her “Lady of the Meadowland”. It was all very ridiculous so Geralt closed his eyes again and lay back onto the sun-warmed grass. He heard Jaskier amble over, felt his presence as he lay beside him with a deep sigh.
Geralt cracked an eye open to look at him. His eyes were closed. The sun turned his brown hair bronze, blue and yellow petals resting there crookedly. Geralt couldn’t help but think that Jaskier belonged here.
He belonged among the sun and the wildflowers.
—
Sixteen years into whatever the fuck they were and Geralt had been hired to kill a Griffin.
Fucking griffins and their fucking talons.
Geralt felt the ground pull at him magnetically.
He’d lost a lot of blood.
He stumbled to the ground.
He would have been content to press his feverish face into the cool, damp grass and simply lay there, if it hadn’t been for a single thought in his head.
Jaskier.
“Please tell me, whether I’m around to help or not.”
Fuck.
He pushed himself up shakily, a stab of pain pierced through the pressure in his head. He tried blinking past the faded edges of his vision and the spots floating between the trees like black will o’ the wisps.
He stumbled forward, hands pressed to his stomach. They didn’t do much to stop the heavy flow of blood gushing out of him. His fingers were numb but the rest of him was warm, so warm. He had to make it back, he couldn’t die without seeing Jaskier one more time. He couldn’t die here alone.
The face of loneliness came into focus amidst the blurry forest.
Somehow he made it back to the camp. Jaskier’s back was to him. He was stroking Roach’s snout, singing to her softly. It was a lullaby Jaskier sang whenever either of them couldn’t sleep. Geralt smiled in relief, the pressure in is head lifting slightly at the familiar sound.
“Jaskier.” The bards name fell out of him like a breath. Finally, he let the ground pull him down.
He woke up again in rather large bed, head cushioned on a feather pillow. Looking around he saw a glass of water on the desk in the corner, a painting of a long-bearded, angry-looking man on the wall across from him and a silk sheet covering him up to his bare chest. He frowned. This was not the typical establishment he was accustomed to.
Shifting slightly, he felt a weight on his arm. Confused, he looked to the right to find a mess of brown hair resting on his bicep. Geralt blinked, eyes widening. Jaskier was clearly asleep, curled around his side, head on his arm and hand resting in Geralt’s loose fingers. The Witcher suddenly felt warm and couldn’t help but tighten his hand around the bard’s.
While closing his hand, he involuntarily closed his other one, feeling something hard and cool under his fingers. Lifting it to his face, he saw that it was actually a stone, vaguely triangular in shape, with a wonky hole in the middle. What was strangest however, were the smudgy yellow flowers that had been painted around the hole. He assumed they were flowers as he could just make out some petals and wobbly, green stems.
Putting the mystery aside for a moment, he placed the stone down on the bed beside him. Removing his covers gently so as not to wake Jaskier, Geralt felt along his bandaged belly. The pain wasn’t too bad, more of an ache than anything and that could’ve simply been from the blood loss.
He wondered where they were. Their camp hadn’t been too far from a town, but that meant that Jaskier had somehow lifted him onto Roach and galloped through the forest and into town in search of a healer. Geralt knew that the bard was strong, muscle lined his arms and legs, tightened his stomach when he stepped into cold water. Almost two decades of joining Geralt on the path had given him a rather large build. Nevertheless, a limp Witcher was no easy feat to lift, especially onto a horse.
He felt Jaskier stir beside him. His head was still towards him but he could tell he’d opened his eyes because he promptly covered the Witcher back up with the silk cover he’d peeled off earlier. Geralt shifted and suddenly big, blue eyes were looking up at him. From this angle, he could see that the bard’s feet had been hanging off the edge of the bed from his position on Geralt’s arm.
“Geralt!” He exclaimed, smiling brightly. “You’re awake.” Geralt gave a soft grunt in response. “How are you feeling?” Jaskier asked, sitting up. He realised he was still holding onto Jaskier’s hand, so he let it go reluctantly, allowing the bard to pull it out of his grip.
“Like I lost most of my blood.”
“Ha ha.” Jaskier said humourlessly. Geralt sighed and looked up at the ceiling.
“Are you upset with me?” He asked finally. He knew Jaskier was upset but he didn’t know what kind of upset it was. Angry? Sad? Annoyed?
“I was,” Jaskier began. Geralt’s jaw tightened and Jaskier grasped his hand comfortingly. “But then I realised that I had no reason to be upset with you, I think my feelings of fear and concern got a bit muddled. Geralt, I was fucking terrified.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry, it’s not your fault, it was just…a lot.” Geralt winced and looked back to the bard. He was looking at their joined hands, blue eyes hazy and far away. Geralt didn’t know what he was seeing. He wasn’t sure he wanted to know. He gave Jaskier’s hand a tight squeeze, bringing him back. Jaskier smiled at him sheepishly.
“Were you surprised to wake up?” The bard asked. Geralt thought for a moment.
“No.”
“No?”
Geralt raised a brow, not entirely knowing what Jaskier wanted him to say. No, he wasn’t surprised. His only thought had been Jaskier. That he wanted to see him again. He wasn’t thinking much of being healed or waking later. Yet now that he thought about it, there wasn’t much doubt in him that Jaskier would help him in whatever way he could.
A thought came into Geralt’s mind.
“What’s this?” He asked, raising the painted stone. A blush tinged Jaskier’s cheeks pink.
“Ah…it’s a - it’s a hagstone.”
Geralt rolled his eyes.
“Yes, I see that, why was it in my hand and why is it covered in flowers?”
“Well, if you don’t like it, I’ll take it back.” Jaskier said pettishly, reaching for it. Geralt pulled it out of his reach.
“No, I want it.” Geralt said, grinning. Jaskier dropped his hand and huffed, looking away.
“Remember when you left me to babysit those three girls a couple of years ago?”
Geralt blinked, vaguely recalling three sets off big brown eyes.
“They painted you yellow.”
“They painted buttercups, just…on me.”
“They painted you yellow.”
“Yes, okay, thank you.” Jaskier sighed, rolling his eyes. “The hagstone dropped out of my pocket and they…painted that too.” He smiled sheepishly.
That was nearly a decade ago. Geralt couldn’t believe he’d held onto it for that long. He pulled it closer so he could examine it genuinely. He could make out the smudgy, yellow petals attached to green stems. They were dotted around the stone, growing in a cluster. The yellow paint had remained fairly unfaded. Geralt rubbed his thumb over the stone.
“You can keep it if you want.” Jaskier said. Geralt turned to find him already looking at him, eyebrow raised and smiling. The look of sincerity on the bard’s face had Geralt looking away.
“Why did you put it in my hand?”
“They’re for protection and healing. Surely you know that.”
Geralt knew what they were for, theoretically. The protective powers of witch stones were a myth though, just humans placing undue importance on an unusual rock. In reality, it was just that. A rock. One that had been eroded by water or animals. Geralt didn’t say anything though.
He didn’t know if he could say anything. Jaskier had carried this stone with him for a decade, maybe more, hoping for protection and now he was giving it to him. A Witcher who, by all appearances, didn’t want nor need luck. The bottom line was that the bard wanted him safe and Geralt had absolutely no way of dealing with that.
“They’re also used to keep witches away,” Jaskier continued, “useful incase we ever cross paths with Yennefer again.”
Geralt snorted.
“She’s a sorceress.” He countered
“And I’m a musician. It doesn’t mean I’m not also a bard.” Jaskier sniffed disdainfully. He pushed himself up the bed so he was leaning against the headboard and sitting next to Geralt. He continued to talk, allowing the Witcher to simply listen and think about how close their hands were between them.
—
Twenty two years since they met.
The wind bit at him, seeking to push him off his feet as he looked down at the snarling Witcher.
“Why is it whenever I find myself in a pile of shit these days, it’s you shovelling it?”
“That’s not fair.” He couldn’t help protesting weakly.
“If life could give me one blessing, it would be to take you off my hands.” Geralt gritted out between clenched teeth, amber eyes burning with emotion, he was practically shaking with it.
Jaskier stood and watched as the Witcher turned and stormed further away from him. Tension and aggression written into the way Geralt’s shoulders tensed, fists tight, arms loose, ready to attack. Jaskier had seen Geralt like this before, more times than he could count, but it had never been directed at him. No matter how many times he irritated the Witcher or inadvertently gotten them into trouble, Geralt never had more for him than a hard glare and some frustrated shouts.
This was different. This felt final. This felt like the end. The inevitable conclusion to his tragic love story because fuck him, he’d fallen in love with a man sworn to someone else.
“Right, uh,” Jaskier managed to get out, suddenly finding it difficult to breath, “right, then,” he tried again, looking away, eyes blinking rapidly, “I’ll - I’ll go get the rest of the story from the others.” He turned and walked away, his attempt at casualness flimsy and transparent.
While Geralt berated destiny, fought against it and ignored it wholeheartedly, Jaskier accepted his fate because he had always known it was coming.
But, damn, did it hurt.
He didn’t get the rest of the story.
He stuffed all of his belongings into a bag, slung his lute over his shoulder, gave Roach one last, teary-eyed hug and ran. Geralt had walked away from him, both physically and metaphorically, and now Jaskier needed as much space between them as possible. He ran down the mountain, tripping on uneven paths and scratching his hands bloody. The burn in his lungs and chest felt poetic.
In the last two decades of his life, he and Geralt had always found their way back to each other after weeks or months apart. Sure, he’d keep an ear out for news of a Witcher but most of the time, Melitele save him, it had been a gods-honest accident. The romantic that he is believed it to be fate, and perhaps it was, but he knew now that it wasn’t the kind sort.
Fate was cruel and maleficent, making him believe that their hearts were intertwined when in reality it had been a ploy to torture them both in the end. Destiny left Jaskier heartbroken and Geralt with a life he didn’t want.
—
Some part of his mind registered Jaskier walking away.
Most of it was focused on containing the pain.
He had felt it slowly bloom in his chest at Yennefer’s weak “that’s why we can’t escape each other?” Anguish and bitterness in her voice. From there it had unfurled and spread throughout his body, the emotion burning him from the inside.
His being was now solely fixated on not letting it spread further.
Again, some part of him registered that it already had, it had spread to the bard, it had lashed out at him.
He felt like a flaming whip pulled taught. He felt in in his shoulders, his fists, his jaw.
He breathed in deeply.
His eyes were wet. He tried focusing them on the green valley below.
He breathed out and sunk to his knees.
He waited for the rushing noise in his head to stop.
His cheeks were wet.
He turned around. Yennefer was gone. Jaskier too.
So were their things when he returned to camp.
He breathed in and wailed.
—
The world was dull to him. The trees were not as green. The shades of blue across cornflower petals didn’t look the same anymore.
The world was quiet to him. Too quiet. Something was missing.
Never did he think the world would be dull and quiet. It had always been the opposite, too much, too loud.
He missed Jaskier desperately.
He hadn’t found him again since the mountain.
He could tell Roach missed him too.
Snippets of songs and melodies that had Jaskier’s mark drifted here and there. They were never him. How strange it was to hear others recount his own tales when he had grown so used to Jaskier being the only one.
For the first six months, he’d kept an ear out for any gossip of the famous bard but he had always seemed to arrive just a few days behind. Two months later and the chatter had dried up. No one had seen the bard, no one sang any new songs of his. He had searched the continent, gone to the coast, gone to Jaskier’s own town and found no sign of him.
It was like he had ceased to exist and so, Geralt’s world was dull and quiet.
The face of loneliness had never been clearer.
After those first eight months, he’d also started sleeping poorly.
Before, he’d been a light sleeper, ready to jump out of his bedroll fully aware and ready to defend. It came with being a Witcher. Although, admittedly, the nights spent in inns, on a relatively soft mattress, with a sleep-warm bard next to him had left him sleeping a bit deeper, waking a bit dazed.
Yet after those eight months, he’d slept restlessly. He’d dream of a weeping willow, drooping sadly. He’d dream of an open field and oddly wake up feeling caged.
When he himself found no sign of the bard, he’d gone to one of the few people he trusted, Triss Merigold. He had given her an old undershirt that Jaskier had forgotten to take with him. He made her try for three days before she had finally said “I really am sorry, Geralt, but truly, I can find no sign of your friend.” Geralt took the soft material back. “I fear he’s -“
“Don’t.” Whatever look he’d had on his face made her snap her mouth shut. Dark eyes looked at him with pity as he had turned, dropped some coin and left.
He’d go to Yennefer next.
“Geralt,” she greeted tensely, “didn’t think I’d be seeing you again so soon.”
Geralt had found Yennefer a few months after the dragon contract. They’d agreed that though they cared for each other deeply, it was best for them to have space, to move on. Geralt hoped desperately that one day they would become friends. Yennefer, though difficult and battle-hardened, remained fair and kind, one of the only people with whom Geralt shared easy conversation.
There was a longing between them, one that both knew was not falsified by the djinn. Neither knew what sort of longing they felt. One of friendship, companionship, understanding? Time and space would let them learn.
“I know,” He muttered apologetically, “I need your help.”
“You look awful.” She simply responded. Geralt winced. “You haven’t been sleeping.”
The Witcher opted for silence. He knew that she had heard him and knew that she was studying him, pondering his request.
“What do you need?” She asked finally, tone not one of acceptance but of curiosity.
“Jaskier.” The word came out sounding more distressed than he had intended. It was harder to maintain a mask through sleep deprivation. Yennefer’s expression briefly shifted to one of concern.
“What happened?”
Geralt’s throat suddenly felt compressed. Those two words somehow confirming that something had happened. Something had to have happened if he and Triss couldn’t find him.
Fear was a terrifying emotion because he truly didn’t know what he would do to end it.
“I…I don’t know. I can’t find him and neither can Triss.” Geralt pulled out the same shirt he had given to the other sorceress, gripping the folded fabric tightly in his hands. He looked up at Yennefer to find her looking right back with a sort of unease. “Please,” he said, offering the garment to her, “track him if you can.”
She stared at the shirt apprehensively, gaze snapping up to Geralt’s, looking for something. Finally, she sighed and turned to walk over to a large bookshelf, pulling out a thick, yellow-paged tome that had clearly not been removed for a good while.
“You’re lucky night is falling,” she said, stepping outside, not waiting for Geralt to follow. He did. “If regular tracking didn’t work, we’ll have to do it the hard way.” She walked to the middle of her large garden, sitting cross-legged in the grass, wine-coloured dress pooling around her. Geralt approached, ready to be told off and to step back, yet Yennefer said nothing as he sat down across from her.
The sorceress flipped the tome open to the centre, each side resting on a knee. Each side also being a couple inches thick. Tucked into the middle, between the two pages was a thin, silver geometrical compass. Yennefer lifted it with an elegant hand and placed it over one of the many configurations on the page. Geralt’s limited knowledge allowed him to surmise that they were astronomical. He looked up to the sky and the stars that he only knew to use for navigation.
“The shirt.” Yennefer said sharply, snapping his gaze back down to her and her outstretched hand. Shirt in one hand, compass in the other and tome on her lap, she began to speak. It was some variation of Elder. Geralt, only knowing the basics of the root language, was left clueless as the space above the book began to glow.
The light transformed the yellowed pages gold, illuminating Yennefer’s perfect features and making her look all the part of the powerful mage he knew she was. She dropped the shirt on the grass between them. Violet eyes looked up to the stars, compass travelling across the golden pages of the book. She flipped back and forth between the pages, her eyes shooting between stars. The compass twisted in complicated circular motions across configurations.
The light began to die slowly, Yennefer’s words slowing to a stop as she closed her eyes, clearly disappointed. Geralt’s stomach dropped and he felt like he might throw up the paltry dinner he’d had a few hours earlier.
“Yennefer, please -“
“I’m not done yet, Geralt.” She responded sharply before taking a breath, “I need something personal to him, something with an emotional connection. I may not be able to find his physical body,” because he may be dead was left unsaid “but I can perhaps find his spirit.”
Geralt tried to keep the devastation off his face at the implication.
An emotional connection. He knew immediately what to give her. A small pocket in the side of his leather armour held a painted witch stone. He gently pulled it out, rubbing his thumb over the messy petals of the buttercups. Yennefer didn’t comment on the item, though she looked at him with pinched brows. He placed the stone in the sorceress’ outstretched palm.
The golden light returned and Geralt watched as the sorceress studied the stars, measuring out constellations and distances in her book. Geralt had never been one for religion but he prayed, prayed for something.
Again, the light faded and Yennefer looked to him with a frown.
—
He’d been looking for tracks in the large forested area Yennefer had pointed him to. He’d been looking for two days and nothing had been found.
Honestly, he didn’t know what he was looking for. Yennefer had been unable to find his body but had found his spirit? Were they no longer attached? Geralt’s mind had been filtering through the different options of what that could mean, but even Yennefer didn’t know what to say. The thought that he might be dead was an unwelcome one in his mind.
It had recently rained and the ground squelched and shifted under Geralt’s boots. Most of the tracks had been washed away by the rain. Geralt lead Roach through the trees, eyes catching on imprints in the ground and broken shrub twigs. All signs indicating animal presence rather than human.
The forest was familiar to the Witcher, he’d been here before. He didn’t think much of it, he’d been to most places on the continent, the Path taking him wherever he needed to be. Yet when he tried to recall the memory tied to this place, it was not one of necessity or danger. He couldn’t quite pinpoint it.
Giving up on the meagre prints, he let the memory lead him. His feet found a forgotten path. Boots had flattened the earth so compactly, it was likely to last a long time. But it was littered with leaves and branches, clearly not trod on for a long while. He remembered the path, it had not looked so different the first time he had found it. It had soothed him that though this forest may once have been peopled, it was unlikely that they’d run into trouble.
They. He hadn’t been alone in the memory.
Vague and distant chatter tugged him forward, the line between reality and recollection blurring. He let go of Roach’s reins, trusting her to follow. He surged through the trees, pushing aside branches. Sunlight and grass filtered through the trees.
Spring.
Buttercups, dandelions, daisies, cornflowers.
A laugh ringing in his ears.
“Geralt look at this! It’s exquisite! We have to break here.”
The Witcher burst through the line of trees and froze. A field of green grass. It was familiar, but not just from the memory. A shiver down the back of his neck. Dread tightened his chest. His eyes landed on a weeping willow, its leaves pale. He didn’t remember it being here the last time.
Uneasily, he made his way towards it. It sagged so low that Geralt could not quite make out its bark. The pale leaves almost sparkled in the sun from the wetness of the leaves.
The Witcher crouched lower as he got closer, seeing a body through the drooping leaves. His hand hovered over his sword. He stopped before the wall of pallid green. The person behind had not moved, clearly unaware of his presence. He reached a hand out and pulled the leaves away, one hand still on the pommel of his sword.
His eyes landed on the man sitting on the damp grass, leaning back against the tree.
Geralt felt like the air had been punched out of him, body becoming immediately slack.
Wide shoulders. Soft, brown hair. Blue, inquisitive eyes.
“Fuck-“ the word came out sounding more like a sob than anything else, “Jaskier”.
Geralt took two steps forward and collapsed on his knees.
“Jaskier.” He reached out to touch him, to feel him warm and safe.
He felt nothing. His fingers slipped through.
A shimmer and a blur and the bark of a willow tree.

Made a new Flight Rising iceberg and also wrote an explanation.. man, this took way longer than it should have.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy :D
Iceberg explanation
( If there are any mistakes please let me know and I’ll edit this asap. Also, English isn't my first language so please forgive me for any grammatical errors)
EDIT 28/06: Added some new info! Thanks to everyone who tagged and responded with new stuff to add, I really appreciate it!
The Sky
Naomi
Back in the day, whenever you bought or sold something on the auction house a message would show up in your inbox confirming the transaction. These messages were sent by one of the dragon couriers: Pearl, Spitfire or Edgar.
On January 2016, a strange glitch occurred that replaced the images and names of couriers with the ones of a female fae named “Naomi”.
It goes deeper than that, though: if you looked up her name in the user search menu, a clan would pop up with over 15 million dragons.
It was quickly discovered that all exalted dragons had somehow become part of her clan. Naomi herself apparently didn’t exist, and clicking on her page redirected to an error page. This was later fixed and the original Naomi page can be now visited.
What exactly caused this glitch is still a mystery and today Naomi is still a well-known piece of Flight Rising history.
Missing Tidelord
In the official lore, the deity of the water flight disappeared in early 2018, as described in the short story “Hear Today, Gone Tomorrow”.
In the follow up story (Mixed Elements) posted in April of the next year it is confirmed that the Tidelord is still missing, but alive. This coincides with the fact that the Tidelord account hasn’t made any forum posts aside from festival announcements.
Emperors
Emperors are a type of unobtainable dragon that are formed when several Imperial corpses are left in close proximity to each other, which then fuse forming a multi-headed chimera.
Emperors are described in the lore as having an animal-like behavior and destroying everything in sight. They are extremely difficult to kill, which is the reason why in-universe Imperials have such strange burial rites.
An emperor named Luminax is first described in the Raising a Family short story, and their sprite can be seen walking around on the world map.
The Surface
Old color wheel
Originally, there were only 67 available colors for dragons. On June 8th 2016, 110 more colors were added, meaning that currently there are a total of 177 colors available.
When making a custom progenitor dragon, it is only possible to choose among the 67 original colors because it would be otherwise unfair for those who made their account before the new colors were added.
Imperial breed scrolls
Imperial breed change scrolls are one of, if not the most, rare type of item on the site. They were given only to those who pledged 30 dollars or more on the original Flight Rising kickstarter.
At the time, this was the only way of obtaining an Imperial dragon, which meant that the breed as a whole was pretty valuable. Now that Imperials are abundant this is no longer the case, but First generation Imperials are still extremely sought and probably the most expensive type of dragon on the site.
There were also other items that were only given to Kickstarted backers, namely Skycats, Bonefiend, Golden Idol and Cogfrog familiars, and those are also pretty much impossible to obtain.
Baldwin breed change
When Baldwin was introduced in 2015 he was originally a Pearlcatcher. On September 14th of 2016 however his site art started to gradually change, until his transformation was completed five days later.
In-universe, Baldwin started to change after a lightning strike hit his cauldron during an experiment, which made him slowly mutate into the breed we now know as Bogsneaks.
Trans Fiona
When Fiona was added as a trading post dragon people speculated that she was trans, because the female pose for Skydancers only displays two antennae, while the male one has four.
Since Fiona has four antennae in her site art, many wondered whether it was an oversight or actually intended. Aequorin later confirmed in a forum thread that Fiona is indeed trans.
Boolean
Speaking of rare items, the Boolean familiar was only given to a handful of Flight rising beta testers and as such is extremely rare and valuable.
Plaguebringer coli team
On the Plaguebringer’s page she is listed as being part of a coliseum team.
As of now we have no clue as to why this is, and even more strangely she is the only deity that does this.
Boston & Hope
This story is a bit complicated. I’ve scoured the forums in search of info but it seems like there are still some pieces missing. I’ll try my best to explain anyway.
So, for a long while the Lightweaver was the only deity that had other dragons aside from herself in her lair: these dragons were a Spiral named Boston and a Tundra named Hope. Strangely, they were both Earth dragons and apparently have been there since the beginning (?). When asked why (this happened back when deities would interact on the forums) the Lightweaver responded that they were having a dinner party together.
In August 2014 during a pretty heated dominance battle between Shadow and Light Boston and Hope disappeared from the Lightweaver’s lair.
The Shadowbinder now had them, and both their elements were alsochanged to Shadow. The two deities acknowledged this and changed their broadcast messages accordingly.
If I had to guess this was some kind of inside joke that the admins had, although some people got angry that the Shadowbinder now had both Hope and Boston. Some time later(?) Boston was returned to the Lightweaver and for some reason his element was changed to wind.
I don’t have any more info on the matter but if some of you do I would appreciate it if you tell me.
Shallow Waters
Eyepocalypse
On June 8th 2018 eye type variants were introduced. This update was pretty controversial for a bunch of reasons, and the topic is still discussed today. The majority of people(?) seemed to be upset by the fact the “best” eye types (primarily goat, primal and multi-gaze) could only be displayed on dragons that were born with them, and the fact that every dragon born prior to the update couldn’t have these eye types at all displeased a lot of users.
Another problem was the fact that most of the non-special eye types (i.e the only ones that could be applied to already existing dragons using a vial of Scattersight) were not clearly visible on the grand majority of adult dragons.
A smaller(?) complaint was that two of the primal eye types, Shadow and Plague, were seen as kind of disturbing by some people.
Three years later staff attempted to fix this issue by adding Eye type vials for every available eye type. This resulted in a market crash for special eye typed dragons, as now these eye types could be applied to any dragon. The value of Scattersights also tanked, and the people bought them and hadn’t used them yet lost money as now they were infinitely less useful.
EDIT 28/06: Goat isn’t actually obtainable via breeding, faceted is. Bad mistake on my part.
Also, Scattersights were given away freely by Galore on Flight Rising’s fifth anniversary in 2018 and could not be bought afterwards. I admit that I thought people could be able to buy Scattersights due to how upset people were that the value went down, but whatever.
Courier Breed
The courier dragons (Edgar, Spitfire, and Pearl) are part of an exclusive dragon breed that is currently unobtainable. Even though their eye color still reflects the flight they were born in, in-universe they are considered to be “neutral” and they are granted free access to all domains. This raises the question as to which deity created them, as every other dragon breed (Bogsneaks being the only exception) has been created by one of The Eleven.
Multiaccounting
According to the site’s terms of service, no one is allowed to have more than one account. This is pretty standard for pet sites, as having multiple accounts grants unfair advantages and can mess up the site economy. This doesn’t completely stop people for having more than one account, and the practice as a whole is called “Multiaccounting” or “having multis”.
Some people only do this to have multiple clans or reboot their account without deleting their old one. They mostly do no harm but it is reasonable that the site wouldn’t allow this because of how easy it is exploit.
The real harm of multis comes from a practice called “funneling” which is when someone creates multiple accounts only for the purpose of giving items to their main account. This practice violates the game’s rules and can result in a ban. Funneling is not limited to multiaccounting though, and having an account only to feed another is against the site’s rules whether or not the account in question belongs to another person or not.
Some people fear of being banned for multiaccounting even if they haven’t done so, especially if they share a computer with other people.
Purble
“he purble” is probably among the most famous Flight Rising memes.
In 2016(?) a rant was submitted to the original Dramarising blog by a very angry user that wanted to buy an XXX Purple Ridgeback back when triples were pretty expensive, but got beat by someone else.
I’m not going to copy paste it here because in my opinion it’s one of the funniest Flight Rising related posts ever and I don’t want to spoil the experience of reading it for the first time. You can find it pretty easily by searching it up.
Tert Picking
This is something that refaced recently, even though I’ve seen people talking about this for a while. Some people vividly remember being able to pick their custom progenitor’s tertiary color, even though the developers have made it clear that such thing would be impossible. This is without a doubt just one of those weird situations where a lot of people somehow remember the same thing wrong.
Still, it’s fascinating just how many people claim to remember doing picking their tert.
Swiftwings
Swiftwings were a dragon breed that was scrapped in development. The design was rejected because it didn’t fit the 2 arms 2 legs 2 wings format that every dragon design had to follow before the introduction of ancient breeds.
The reason for this rule is that otherwise it would mess up apparel placement. Although the concept was scrapped, echoes of the design were scattered throughout the site: for example, the empty dragon slots that were present prior to 2019 had the silhouette of a Swiftwings dragon. They are also mentioned in the April Fool’s update of 2018.
“Real” Lore dragons
Most people don’t know that some of the dragons featured on the lore stories are actually real, and you can visit their pages. This is the case for Tetra, Cracklinne, Velya, Liefa, Garote and Mirth, which are currently chilling in Aequorin’s lair.
All of the other dragons in the developers’ lairs are not canon and are used to test bugs and features on the site.
The Middle ground
True deity names
When the site first started the deities used to have actual names instead of titles. Some of these names were based off of the site founders’s usernames on other sites.
The names are the following:
Amogayvhi - Gladekeeper Xhaztol - Arcanist Rhenik - Tidelord Akiri - Flamecaller Thrage - Stormcatcher Undel - Shadowbinder Jhortanas - Plaguebringer Ghurab - Windsinger Artaios - Earthshaker Rhiow – Lightweaver
As you can tell, Xhaztol, Akiri, Thrage and Undel are the usernames of some of the admins of the site, and the flight they are a part of corresponds with the previous name of their deity.
No leg coatls
On January 16, 2015 an iconic thread was posted in the flight rising discussion forum, which displayed a photoshopped image of a coatl with its legs removed. Quickly the thread devolved into a general photoshop thread were people took official site art of dragons and modified it.
The thread was eventually locked due to spam and quote pyramids, but spiritual successors of the original “phoatlshop” thread still exist today.
Dress slot unlocking
A thing that a surprising amount of people don’t know is the fact that when buy an additional apparel slot, the slot opens for every dragon in your lair and not just the one you bought it on.
This is something I also discovered very recently and it’s kind of funny that so many people that have been on the site for very long don’t know this.
Clanbound scatterscrolls
I think the wiki explains it best, so I’ll just copy paste this here:
“Tri-Color Scatterscrolls suffered from an issue where they would only scatter a random range from colors 1-47 (white through sunshine) rather than 1-67 (white through rose). They have been fixed and are now functioning correctly with a random range within the 67 color set. The affected timeframe was from August 15th, 2013 until September 22nd, 2013. The admins allowed users who were unsatisfied with their bugged Tri-Color Scatterscrolls to receive the same amount of them back in the form of Clanbound Scatterscrolls to try scattering their own dragons again with the full color range.”
Beta Mirrors
Ever wondered why they’re called Mirrors?
According to Undel, the main artist of Flight Rising, mirrors originally were supposed to have every part of their body “mirrored”, meaning they had two sets of eyes, two pairs of wings, two tails, and so on.
This design ended up being too cluttered and looked weird shrunken down. The name was kept the same, even though the only mirrored part of the design are the eyes.
Dragons are evil
If you read the “Beastclans on the rise” lore bit, the dragons come across as… very evil, stealing territory from the beastclans when they have been living on Sornieth way longer than the dragons have and killing them for loot.
Furthermore, in the Bounty of the Elements lore bit the Beastclan rebellion guided by Talona is seen by the dragons as unreasonable and wrong even when in canon Beastclans are framed as the innocent party.
The Depths
Scroll of Divorce
In the alpha stage dragons were supposed to be monogamous and could only breed with the dragon they were “paired” with. To break their bond you had to use an item called “Scroll of Divorce” which even featured broken marriage rings in the art.
If I had to guess, this item and the concept as a whole were scrapped because the idea of dragons having “weddings” and needing to divorce before breeding with another dragon felt kind of weird, especially in a game targeted towards teens.
First Festival
The first Holiday festival in Flight rising history was the 2013 Brightshine Jubilee. The items that were available for this festival only are incredibly rare, particularily the Light Sprite which is one of the most valuable items on the site. Apart from that and the fact that the skincent contest only had 6 winners, not much is notable about it.
Offsite drama
Flight Rising has had its fair share of drama both on and off site, but due to the fact that it’s against the site’s rule to discuss user drama on the forums most of the notable drama happened off site (mainly tumblr).
Egg rot
Egg rot was a very early mechanic that was pretty quickly removed from the site. If you forgot to incubate your eggs, they would “rot” and no longer hatch.
It’s the reason why in the nesting grounds the text reads “Eggs healthy” and also the reason why on the stats section of the Account settings it says “Eggs discarded”. The mechanic was removed because it heavily punished casual players and the frequent downtimes of the site meant that even if someone logged in every day they could still have their eggs die.
Also, the images of egg rot look extremely cursed.
Pablo
From what I could gather, Pablo is a dragon which became somewhat popular after user “Desmondtiny” wrote a very long and detailed backstory of them being the Arcanist’s lost boyfriend.
I’m pretty sure it gues deeper than that but I couldn’t find any further information. As usual, if you know something more let me know.
Latest News
On November 12, 2014, a glitch(?) occurred that let anyone post in the Announcements thread. Anything that was posted went directly to the front page, which resulted in quite a bit of chaos.
This was fixed only half an hour later, but the screenshots people have from that time are extremely funny.
Lameforger
On the 2014 Flameforger’s festival announcement Undel accidentally misspelled “Flameforger” as “Lameforger”, which prompted the official account of the Flamecaller to respond aggressively. Lameforger is still jokingly used by users, even after the typo was fixed.
Festival of one (1)
On the first day of the 2014 Greenskeeper Gathering a glitch occurred which switched the site banner for the Starfall celebration banner instead of the Greenskeeper one.
It didn’t end there, in the coliseum Magical shards dropped instead of Bladed Flatleaves, even though skin chests dropped as normal(?).
The weirdest thing about it all was Joxar’s Space inventory, which didn’t display any items at all and had glitched dialogue.
The event was nicknamed by the fanbase “Festival of 1” and even the deity’s official accounts acknowledged the incident.
Vape Juice
As far as I know the original forum thread as been lost, but the vape juice fiasco will always remain cemented in Flight Rising History.
A company called Vape Daugz was making vape juice with Flight Rising dragons plastered on their packaging, completely violating the site’s policy.
The company’s site still exists, and browsing through their products I found that the products that previously had Flight Rising dragons on them still exist, but now feature completely different packaging.
I have no idea whether they changed the packaging spontaneously or staff did something about it.
I think there’s a potentially interesting story buried down there, but we’ll likely never the truth behind the Flight Rising vape juice.
The Abyss
Humans
There’s been some speculation over the years as to whether or not humans are canon in the Flight Rising universe. Some people believe that the “Mages” of the second age in the official lore are actually humans, but we can’t be sure because they are depicted with long robes that cover their whole bodies.
The idea of humans existing in canon has spawned a couple of memes, most infamously Thomas.
Plague healers
Again, I think the wiki explains this one better:
“According to Aequorin, Plague healers are an interesting bunch because rather than administer treatments that counter illness, they use a mixture of magic and contagion that stress the affected dragon further, allowing them to reach a stronger, healed, and resistant state faster than other elements. Plague healers will treat physical injuries with sutures, bandages, and braces, but they won't clean the wounds or apply ointments."
Akitla
As described in the original thread, Akitla was a dragon that user “qunii” saw on the front page, but noticed that she wasn’t accompanied by the username of the person owning them.
After clicking on her, an error page loaded. It was discovered that putting her color combination or ID in the search bar would result in an error page. This was later fixed, and both Akitla and her mate were now displayed as being exalted to the Arcanist. T
here are some theories as to what happened to the Akitla’s user, some think that she belonged to a deleted account, others that it was the result of an incomplete account creation.
As with a lot of things on this iceberg, it will likely remain a mystery forever.
Arcane sprite book
“what is the arcane sprite reading??” is probably one of the oldest still active threads on the forums.
On September 25, 2013 user “Kaadashi” started a joke thread were they wondered what exactly is the arcane sprite reading, and playfully suggested that it could be erotic fanfiction. People went crazy of course, and started to wonder what kind of juicy secrets were hidden within the pages of that book.
I don’t want to say too much because I really don’t want to spoil the experience of reading through this very cursed tread.
Sunshine
Sunshine is one of the most… interesting lairs on the site, and certainly one of the most well-known.
They(?) have a lair (almost) completely full of triple basic sunshine dragons, most of which are Tundras. So far they have collected about 320 triple hundred Sunshine dragons, almost all of which are also named “Sunshine”. They’re not all the same, some of them have apparel, some of them are gened and some have unique art and descriptions.
They’re dedicated and I respect that.
EDIT 28/06: Apparently some people seem to think that the sunshine-dedicated lair is based on a meme concerning the announcement of the color wheel expansion, which became so discussed that the itself site broke. The two things are unrelated however, as the Sunshine lair has been around for much longer.
The announcement of the color wheel expansion was cryptic, with only a few post showing off differently colored coatls and then 3 pages of reserved posts, with no explanation whatsoever.
Simple Farmer
Another very famous thread is the “I am but a simple farmer” thread started by user “someKindOfGenius”. It’s not really about anything specific, it’s just a rather silly thread were people photoshop flight rising dragons onto various crops.
Still, this thread is iconic so I had to include it.
Dragon Deaths
Way back in 2014 former flight rising programmer Thrage revealed on a forum thread that way back before the beta, dragons could actually starve to death if left unfed.
Yep.
Obviously they had to remove this mechanic because it would have been extremely harsh to casual players and make people frustrated with the game.
Zalvador
User “manojalpa” became fairly well-known for the extremely dark lore they(?) had written for their Clan, it was so dark in fact that every single one of their dragon’s bios had to moved to their tumblr where they couldn’t be easily seen by the site’s mainly underage usebase.
Their lore centered around their progen dragon, a tundra named Zalvador, which behaved and had the same powers as a flight rising user: buying dragons off of the action house, having “breeding projects”, exalting dragons, etc.
These things seem pretty normal when done by a player, but when taking them as actual real things that happen in universe… yeah, it was way too morbid for the site.
The Pit
Black linen neck wraps
For some weird reason, the apparel piece “Black linen neck wrap” when put on a male pose Coatl wraps around the dragon’s throat instead of it’s neck. It’s kind of subtle and hard to see, but if you compare it with the female pose the difference is clear. This is probably just an art error, although it’s weird that it hasn’t been fixed yet, since linen wraps are a very old piece of apparel.
Another weird thing about linen wraps in general is that the wing wraps just sort of… go through the membrane? This is not possible. These dragons are in pain.
Icewarden ears
Another very remarkably popular thread is the Icewarden ears thread.
In 2014 user “Llanai” simply makes note of the fact that the Icewarden has teeny tiny ears.
As we have come to expect from these threads, it quickly devolved into nonsense.
Forbidden Snapper lore
Snappers used to have a way different lore section that was changed because it deemed too similar to the lore of another petsite.
This is what the original section read:
"Snapper dragons do not sleep, but exist in a constant state of reverie. They receive and catalogue all experiences and stories told within their dreams. This persistent state of awakened dreaming awards them the longest memory of any dragon species. They are living encyclopedias, and any dragon who is seeking difficult-to-obtain information will have the most luck unearthing it from a Snapper clan - provided they have the patience for it. If you want two dozen quick answers, talk to a spiral. If you want a fully developed answer, camp out around a Snapper. These dreamers move at their own pace, which varies from dragon to dragon. For some, the awakened dream can prove to be more interesting than their surroundings. This leads to a focus upon the dream, and the waking world as filtered background noise. Interacting with these sleepwalkers can be a trying and repetitive task. Other Snappers may be fairly lucid, with a focus upon their surroundings and the constant hum of the dream pushed aside."
Bee movie script
I’ve seen this story around the forums a few times but I’ve never been able to learn the details.
From what I’ve heard someone copy pasted the entire bee movie script into their clan bio in a drop down text format, which completely broke the page for anyone who visited it. This was fixed, apparently, although I have no clue as to who this user is.
EDIT 28/06: Zeus
Zeus is an XXX gold g1 permababy imperial that used to belong to user "happywing".
Their account is now locked because Zeus was created with the use of a duplication glitch on an imperial breed change scroll, which is obviously not allowed (although I've heard some people say that the dragon was hacked in altogether). Before the account was locked, people speculated that Zeus was the most valuable dragon on the site, because an XXX g1 imperial is impossibly rare.
Wegg shaming
On July 2017 user “Dreamnorn” made a thread were they(?) claimed to have a dream where everything was the same except people used the term “wegged” when two dragons would lay only one egg in a nest.
Ex. Aw man! I’ve been wegged again! = Aw man! I bred two dragons and they only had one egg!
The dream ended up being prophetic, as the term catched on and people started to use it unironically.
The practice of “Wegg shaming” I think refers to the trend of people posting pictures of the dragons that “wegged” them in order to “shame” them.
Plague nest skull
The site art of the plague nest features an unique dragon skull that doesn’t match with any currently existing dragon breed or creature: It appears to have two sets of eyes, like a mirror, but also long and curled horns.
It’s probably just for decoration and it likely doesn’t have any significance whatsoever, but personally I believe it would be pretty cool if when they eventually release plague ancient it at least somewhat resembled this skull.
EDIT 28/06: On second thought, the skull doesn’t seem to have two pairs of eyes, It just has the generic shape of a carnivore.
Rock bottom
CAPTAINPLANET
…this is CAPTAINPLANET. Somehow, user “Decres”' managed to overlay a Fae skin on top of a Tundra, creating this horrifyingly fascinating abomination.
I have no idea how she did this, and she seems pretty adamant to tell.
EDIT 28/06: People have pointed out that this skin overlay glitch was actually somewhat common (although I still haven't found another dragon like CAPTAINPLANET). What you had to do was breed change a dragon while attaching a skin to them in another tab.
This glitch has been patched and such thing is no longer possible.
Lair 46264
A cursed lair.
Dreams
I’ve seen a lot of people, both on forums and on Tumblr, sharing dreams they had about Flight Rising.
A lot of people dream of just being on the site, while occasionally weird things happen.
I’ve read of people who dreamed the distribution of a new breed, buying an exclusive item, a new Fiona feat or Swipp trade, or just browsing the forums.
The most common type of Flight rising-associated dream I’ve seen however is being caught multiaccounting and having their account banned.
I’m no psychoanalyst, but I think it’s pretty clear that these nightmares stem from the paranoia of being banned from their beloved petsite instead of showing any actual intention of doing the “crime” in question.
Anyways, I think it’s fascinating how so many people dream about this site, and it reminds me of the dreams people claimed to have about Mario 64 where completely new levels were added or a scary monster appeared.
Dragon Slime
Dragon Slime was an infamous thread which was supposed to be start off point for an ARG.
It was deleted because it was considered too “spammy” and also because ARGs are banned from the forums. The thread has been lost, unfortunately.
EDIT 28/06: Thanks to @randompurple-fr for providing screenshots of the dragon slime tutorial! You can find them here
Cucumber
Cucumber is the only dragon ever to have been exalted with a skin, which is something that should not be possible. This raises some questions as to what exactly did the person that exalted them do to achieve this, but we have no way of knowing who Cucumber belonged to.
EDIT 28/06: Actually, we do know who used to Cucumber belonged to! Its owner was Osiem: an official flight rising artist. I couldn’t find the thread where they(?) acknowledged the glitch though, if someone has it please let me know!

This is what I think of as a signpost article – it points you to something the mainstream media is deliberately not giving the prominence it needs, but I have no personal expertise or inside knowledge to give you. I am just giving you a start to get going. Several readers will have a much better understanding than I, and I encourage you to give your thoughts in comments below.
It is also worth noting that only the immediate improvement to freedom of speech on Twitter by Elon Musk has brought this to my attention. Several sources – particularly Citizens for Legitimate Government – have suddenly appeared in my feed again after being entirely suppressed.
My own tweets are, for now, less suppressed – my own family have been receiving notifications from me after they were stopped for over a year. I am not in general a fan of billionaires like Musk, and I do not know where Twitter will settle, but there is undoubted initial improvement.
The FTX story seems truly remarkable. From being founded only in 2017 it rose to be a “partner organisation” of the World Economic Forum and the second largest donor to Biden and the Democrat’s mid-term election campaign. It has now gone completely bust, taking every penny of its depositors money with it.
That is some trajectory.
The World Economic Forum has deleted its FTX page, but the Wayback machine has it:
I suppose it is inevitable that dodgy chancers would create derivatives markets for gambling on crypto, but I confess I had not given the matter much thought. It goes without saying that in those five years the founder of FTX had managed to take a huge personal fortune out of the company before it went bust.
FTX was a one man company belonging to Sam Bankman-Fried. The board consisted of him, an employee and the company lawyer. Over US$20 billion of investors’ funds from FTX were funneled to a fund management company, Alameda Research, also owned by Sam Bankman-Fried.
$37 million was donated by Bankman-Fried to the Democrats for the 2022 elections. Every penny of that originated with duped FTX investors. That is in addition to the $5 million given to the Biden 2020 campaign. FTX, of course, crashed instantly after those mid-term elections, which is interesting timing.
The BBC and the Guardian were constantly bombarding us with the term “democracy denier” in their coverage of the US elections, strangely not in reference to Hillary’s ludicrous claims that Russian interference was the cause of her loss in 2016.
I view as a joke any notion that the USA is a democracy. Democracy is about giving citizens a choice of political direction. The 2022 elections saw a simply incredible campaign spend of US$ 9.7 billion. Yes, nearly ten billion dollars. This is not democracy, it is a huge exercise in corporate control from which the ordinary citizen is frozen out.
Despite an aggressive tribalism which has stalemated the political system for decades, the difference in policy platform between Democrats and Republicans is highly marginal, with no alternative on offer to rampant and uninhibited commercial exploitation of the population by the super-wealthy.
The Democrats are marginally more keen on attacking other countries; the Republicans are marginally more against measures to curb carbon emissions. Vaunted differences on immigration and welfare turn out to be very small indeed, with very little changing when the White House does.
American elections are simply about the super rich funneling in vast donations, expecting to benefit when their team gets its nose in the trough, or often donating to both sides to benefit either way.
I am not sure what the connection to democracy is supposed to be.
One simple fact illustrates the true nature of the bribery fest. By far the majority of the funds channeled through Political Action Committees (PACs) are given to incumbents who face no serious threat to re-election anyway. The PAC’s are interested in bribing those in power, not changing those in power. They are simply lobby groups with an opportunity for legal bribery. To illustrate that, the largest donating PACs are:
National Assn of Realtors National Beer Wholesalers Assn American Israel Public Affairs Cmte Credit Union National Assn Blue Cross/Blue Shield American Crystal Sugar
It is worth noting that Bankman-Fried donated ten times as much as the largest PAC donation. This brought access – he and his brother had meetings inside the White House on 7 March, 22 April and 12 May.
It is perhaps unsurprising therefore that FTX was involved in Ukraine, offering to exchange cryptocurrency for fiat and send it to Ukraine in an official partnership with the Ukrainian government. This from their press release
Aid For Ukraine is cooperating with the cryptocurrency exchange FTX which converts crypto funds received into fiat and sends the donations to the National Bank of Ukraine. This marks the first-ever instance of a cryptocurrency exchange directly cooperating with a public financial entity to provide a conduit for crypto donations. Earlier this month, FTX already converted $1 million worth of SOL and transferred it to the National Bank of Ukraine.
The collapse of the Bankman Fried scam was allegedly caused by hackers stealing what should have been a comparatively small portion of the assets of FTX, had they not been hived off elsewhere. Doubtless we will shortly hear from state salaried conspiracy theorists that this was Russia/Guccifer/an ISP address traced by Bellingcat to inside the Kremlin.
What we really have here is an Allen Stanford for 2022, with added political connections.
We would do well to heed the advice of crypto developer Nikolai Mushegian, who had as his Twitter profile: “Larpers who self-style as CEOs or CTOs or VCs are a bigger problem than the establishment. They can’t build anything and will sell you out in 2 seconds.”
His final tweet was posted on 28 October:
The next day he drowned in the sea off a beach in Puerto Rico, where he lived. He was fully clothed including a jacket. The police are not treating it as homicide so presumably their theory is suicide by wading out to sea.
States of course have a massive incentive to destroy non fiat currencies, or convert them into a new category of regulation. I am interested in the current discussion on smart state digital currencies where the state can track, control and block any transaction and know in real time exactly where each citizen or entity is spending or keeping every penny.
It occurs to me this is the wrong way round. The state belongs to its citizens, not the citizens to the state. We should be able to track online every single penny of public money in real time and see how it is spent. Imagine being able to follow every penny of the billions the Tories spent on fraudulent PPE contracts, for example.
The only people whose personal currency should be able to be tracked are those who hold, or have held, positions of power in the state. Their wealth and dealings should be available in great detail to public view. As for the rest of us, our money is ours and we are entitled to privacy.

how long does a writing session normally take you?
I don't really have 'sessions' so much as creative shrapnel scattered across a day. For example:
Average workday: Juggling time between work, sleep, food, and the inevitable straying eyes that lead me to places like, say, Tumblr, is the norm. This will often result in a minimum of two pages a day, max of five.
Average day off (main): I'm guilty of immediately heading out to do frivolous nonsense on these days and then having a mini-crash when I get home. BUT these outings always happen early in the day, and once that chunk is gone, I'll have an unblocked afternoon/evening to flip between Regular Writing on Main Project VS Filling Up One of the Million Notebooks/Working on Side Stories. A good handful of pages can result.
Average day off (before returning to work :c ): No outings, just stewing in A) Scribbling or B) Scribbling hype. The latter could be anything between more fine-detail notes, reading something that lines up with the vibes I'm trying to get in the scene, or--with supreme displeasure--returning to a portion I know could be better and enduring the agony that is editing. I often hide in Tumblr to avoid all of this. But again, pages will happen--be that adding or deleting them outright. :')
Which is all a long way of saying, "My writing session is all day! You would think this means I'm productive! But no. God, no."
Shout out to all my pro scribblers out there who can adhere to a Solid Writing Schedule (c) but I'm different (pained).

electric love.
request: none
paring: jj maybank x fem!reader
summary: y/n and jj have been best friends ever since the fourth grade. after creating a tiktok account as a dare, y/n decides to recreate the trend where you try to kiss your best friend/crush and see what they do.
warnings: TEETH ROTTING FLUFF. probably the cutest thing i’ve ever written <3 i’m hoping to GOD no one has done this with jj yet lmao
it had been nearing 8 pm. the pogues: jj, john b., kiara, pope, and y/n had decided they wanted to lay low after the events of earlier that day (finding the grady-white & sneaking into the motel) by hosting yet another kegger out on the beach. so, there they were; at the beach surrounded by the usual crowd of kooks, other pogues, and tourons.
however, y/n, who was almost always the life of the party, wasn’t really feeling it that particular night. she assumed she might’ve just been jittery from the crazy day her and her friends just had. after her first two solo cups of beer, y/n had decided to separate herself from the rest of her fellow partygoers & friends, making her way to the water just to get some air for a few minutes.
as the waves crashed against the shore, y/n tugged her ripped jean shorts off of her waist and let them drop to her ankles, leaving her in just a bikini top and bottoms. setting them down in the sand where they were guaranteed to stay dry, she placed her cellphone right on top of them. her hair, tied into a very messy bun on the top of her head, was let down immediately after. her hair spilled onto her shoulders and down her back in loose waves & curls. the sun has just begun to set, painting the sky with beautiful shades of orange, yellow, pink, red, and a bit of purple.
moments later, y/n was able to drown out the sound of drunken laughter and talkative teenagers as she focused on watching her feet as the waves pushed against them. after at least five minutes, y/n reached back to grab her phone that had been resting on top of her shorts. hesitantly, she clicked on tiktok, an app she’d downloaded just two days ago. scrolling through her “for you page”, y/n stumbled across a video captioned, “i tried kissing my best friend, this is how it turned out”, using the song elecric love by borns. the corners of her mouth turned upwards into a crooked grin. although she’d thought it was quite cheesy, y/n had to admit that it melted her heart. it was so romantic; the way they held each other, the way kissed each other like it was the last time they’d ever see each other again ... for some reason, y/n could only think about one person: jj maybank.
ahh, jj maybank. one of y/n’s best friends, and her secret crush, since the fourth grade. something about those blonde locks, those crystal blue eyes, the indentations in his cheeks when he smiled — not to mention his insanely perfect, greek-god like smile — and his charismatic personality struck her interest right from the start. it was hopeless, y/n continuously convinced herself. jj would flirt with her, but he flirts with everyone. no matter how many times she would feel that burning twang of jealousy in the depths of her stomach whenever jj would philander with other girls, nothing would change. jj wanted only to be friends, y/n was sure of it. though she had absolutely no issue with remaining jj’s closest female friend, it hurts knowing the one that which you most desire will never be yours.
“hey you!,” a voice suddenly sounded from behind her.
y/n glanced over her left shoulder, only to lock eyes with lover-boy himself. her stomach flipped.
she grinned. “what’s up?”
jj sat beside her with a grunt. “man, y/n, are you feeling okay? you’re usually the center of attention at our keggers — wait, are you on tiktok?”
y/n’s eyes widened slightly, realizing that the electric love sound, along with the same video, had been playing on repeat for at least five minutes. nervously, she clicked her phone off, setting it beside her in the sand as jj chuckled at her forgetfulness.
“i thought you were gonna delete it right after kie dared you to download it the other night!,” jj taunted as y/n grinned, thinking back to a few nights ago to the drunken game of “truth or dare” she played with the pogues on the boat. “i think someone’s addicted...”
y/n gasped playfully. “i am not addicted!”
jj shot her a look, and y/n caved.
“okay, okay. fine. i’m a little addicted, but i can’t help it! the people on here have really...interesting humor.”
jj chucked warmly, taking a sip from his beer.
as the two sat in silence for a moment, y/n began to think. what if she made a move on jj by recreating that tiktok?
no, absolutely not. the alcohol must be getting to her brain. if she were to kiss him and weird him out, that could ruin their entire friendship, and that’s the last thing she wanted. but what if that didn’t happen? he could react in the exact opposite way. anything was possible...why not take the chance?
y/n could not believe she was doing this at all, but after contemplating it for a few minutes, she gathered up the courage to ask: “wanna make a tiktok with me?”
jj looked over at her, cocking an eyebrow with a grin.
“are you being serious?”
“yes!”
“...i-i guess!”
y/n stood up, laughing. she offered her jittery hand to jj, who accepted it and used it to haul himself off of the sandy ground.
“what am i even supposed to do?,” he questioned, scratching the back of his neck.
y/n smiled. “just follow my lead.”
once the sound was ready, y/n grabbed ahold of jj’s hand and tugged him into the shallow saltwater, that stopped just about at their waists. with her phone propped up against jj’s halfway-full bottle of beer, she clicked the timer button and started the countdown for filming to start.
with each beep of the timer, y/n’s heartbeat thumped harder and harder against the inside of her chest.
with that, the song started.
baby, you’re like lightning in a bottle.
y/n stared into his eyes, swallowing the lump in her throat. hesitantly, she grabbed hold of jj’s biceps and pulled him towards her, softly. she pressed her lips against his.
i can’t let you go now that i got it.
jj pulled away from her, shocked. with wide eyes and flushed cheeks, all he could seem to do was stare back at her.
y/n’s heart sank. this was a failure. he looked incredibly uncomfortable, and this was certainly going to make things awkward in the long run.
and all i need is to be struck...
however, the corners of jj’s lips turned upwards into a cheeky smile. suddenly, he grabbed her lower back with one hand and her jawline with the other, pulling her back in towards him.
...by your electric love.
at the beautiful climax of the sound, jj’s lips found y/n’s again. her arms made their way around the back of his neck, her hands beginning to cascade through the golden blond tufts of hair. the entire world seemed to melt around her as a long-lasting dream had come true at last. all of a sudden, y/n’s feet left the plushy ground of the ocean as jj sent both of them tumbling into the cool blueness of the water, tangled up in each other’s arms.

Thorns and Ink Roleswap AU
I had to step back from this one cause I had a whole huge essay written and then my computer restarted and deleted it. It very much upset me so I need to take a break.
I had said last time that a Roleswap AU could mean a lot of different things since Roses and Blank Pages could also be argued to be a roleswap AU where the guys come to our world instead of the girls to twst. Or even the girls have magic and come to a world without magic. But for this one, I decided the guys crash land in Twst instead with no magic at an all-girls academy called Night Raven College where the girls are all studying magic. Here is what the girls would be like if that was the case.
Valentina is a first-year Heartslabyul student who just began at NRC. Originally fromThe Marigold Plains (a fan country I made based on Coco/Mexico), she is the only member of her family to have magic and so she often struggles with feeling pressure to be successful to help support her family whom she loves dearly. She does her best to keep her nose clean but is quick to blame the guys for when something breaks or goes wrong to avoid punishment. Secretly wishes she was sorted into Pomefiore so that she could have an easier time breaking into the field of magical pharmaceuticals and eventually cosmetology. Her unique magic is called Flower Talk which allows flowers she chooses to verbally communicate for five minutes at a time. However, she hates using this magic as over the years she has found that Flowers can be rather rude.
Kristina is a third-year Savanaclaw student and current dorm leader. She’s known for her brash words and bitchy attitude around campus, though most still respect her because she can put her money where her mouth is. She’s from the Misty Highlands (a fan country I made based on Brave/Scotland) and is the captain of the school’s Magical Shift team. Though she has been struggling with not only her team starting to favor the second-year Diasomnia brat on the team but also pressure from home about her grades and taking her life more seriously. All despite the fact she wants to play Magical Shift at the world level. Her unique magic is called For My Own Hand which allows her to make a specific target, after which any spell she casts will land on that specific target no matter the cover or distance.
Anne Marie is a second-year Octavinelle student and current vice dorm leader. She was selected for the role shortly into her first year after the previous vice leader dropped, unable to handle the attitude of their current dorm leader. Anne is from the Rose Queendom though she did spend some time in her childhood in the southern isles of the Wynterlands (though her memories about her time there are hazy at best). She’s kind, confident, and eager to help out but that doesn’t stop the bitterness she feels every time she’s overlooked in favor of someone more conventionally attractive, especially when she hears from her mother that she needs to grow up and be more responsible with her appearance all the time. Her unique magic is called Thimble Kiss which is strong healing magic, which makes her popular in a school that regularly experiences fist fights and magic brawls.
Judith is a second-year Scarabia student and rumored favorite to be dorm leader next year. This has led to a lot of friction between herself and the other students who believed she paid for her place at the school despite her stellar grades since she rarely to ever uses magic. She’s cold and doesn’t talk much and always wearing gloves even refusing to touch anyone. Though this has more to do with fear of her unique magic getting out of control and accidentally giving someone frostbite due to her magic getting out of control when she was younger forcing her to wipe the memories of her childhood friend. She’s even accidentally hurt her own brother, not that he would ever let her forget that fact. She also has the added strain from her grandmother wanting her to use her magic as an in with the Wynterlands royal family since they value strength and prowess in the country. Her unique magic is called Frozen Heart and similarly to Leona’s magic, allows her to freeze and turn anything into ice.
Kimberlee is a bright-eyed first year in Pomefiore. She’s optimistic and does her best to be nice but she’s also nervous about her being behind on trends since she’s from the remote country side in the Shaftlands. She does also get rather bitter and annoyed that her fellow Pomefiore members always want to cast her in masculine roles since she’s tall and it “suits” her. Still, she’s determined to make a name for herself in the world of fashion–even if she is rather outspoken about her distaste for one of the top models in the field right now. It also doesn’t help she bares a striking resemblance to the model as well. Her unique magic is called What Once was Mine and it allows her to reverse time on a person or object allowing her to heal or fix it. However, if it has been longer then an hour she is unable to do anything to help at all.
Eva is a third year and current dormleader of Ignihyde. She has a sharp tongue and a precise attitude. She is aloof and avoids most people with snarky one-liners. Her mother is one of the teachers at the academy and she’s originally from the Kingdom of Heroes. Out of everyone the guys have met so far though, she seems the most openly antagonistic to them for some reason they can’t fathom. Not that anyone else cares to say anything against her since she’s brilliant. Her unique magic is called X Marks the Spot, and it allows her to find an object anywhere if she has physically touched it at least once.
Fiona is a second year of Diasomnia. Despite her friendly demeanor and overall cheerful attitude being uncharacteristic for the school, she is rather beloved. And yet, she still often finds herself left out or forgotten by the rest of the student body and uninvited. Mostly at this point due to her consistently turning down invitations to places and activities in favor of studying and helping with her nephew’s tutoring over the weekend. She’s on the Magical Shift team, but despite this face, she isn’t very fond of the sport and even less so of how her captain seems to have it out for her. Her unique magic is called Stroke of Midnight and allows her to enchant the appearance of any one item but it only lasts until midnight of that day it was cast.

Yo so I've been thinking about resident evil characters and how they would act on social media and
Leon was peer pressured into getting a Facebook by Ashley and Sherry because "get with the times old man." He exclusively posts memes only 80-year-old grandpas find funny, which is to say they're all puns and dad jokes. His timeline is FLOODED with tags. He doesn't know what an Instagram is, but he regularly uses Snapchat to communicate with the girls.
(Leon Alternative: he has an insta, and it's a thirst trap)
Ashley's Instagram is a mommy blog. She's a former president's daughter so her image is CLEAN. Her Instagram has tons of pics of her and her family: perfect lawyer husband, two beautiful kids, amazing mansion in the countryside of Virginia, and the family golden retriever (no it's not Leon). In between posting DIYs, she posts about important upper echelon events happening in DC, meeting cool people, and the work her anti-bioterrorism foundation is doing to help people. She has a Facebook page dedicated to her Foundation. Her husband has banned her from Twitter.
Hunnigan quit social media because it took over her life. She had everything- Twitter, Instagram, FB, Youtube, Pinterest, Reddit, Tumblr - all lurker accounts (except for Twitter where she was an anonymous verified gossip account). She became obsessive with all of it to the point an intervention was staged and Leon had to hold her down as Helena physically deleted the apps from her phone. Leon still has a couple of scars from the scratches.
(Hunnigan Alternative: she never had social media and never wanted it "guys, my job is to know everything about your lives, I'm not going to do it at home too unless you pay me")
Helena has a FB but never posts on it. It's her only social media. Her profile pic is still the sad empty grey default face. She doesn't have a single post of her own, but everyone posts on her timeline.
Claire is very clearly an activist on all her social media (she has everything). She is constantly getting into fights on Twitter and Facebook, usually calling out bigots and human rights abusers/apologists. She takes her work seriously, and reports on any and all major issues. She promotes her work with TerraSave and constantly uploads fundraisers/charities for bioterrorism survivors. Her insta is used to follow fashion blogs.
Sherry has all your basic social media (FB, Twitter, Insta). She thoroughly enjoys her socials and posts whatever her heart desires at the moment whether it's cute pics, reposting commentary from Claire (or tagging her in political arguments), tagging Leon in dad jokes, tagging Helena in sarcastic humour. Everyone gets tagged in group photos with a "this us," the photo being five angry frogs staring down at someone. She likes to show off her cute boyfriend Jake.
If Leon's bad at social media, Chris is so much worse. He accidentally posts 'Piers Nivans' on his Timeline while trying to search the man up. Chris and Leon take turns resharing the same few pictures of guns and bikes. Occasionally Claire will join in.
Sherry, Claire, Ashley, and Leon are the only ones with Snapchat. Most of the girls' snapchats are just candids of Leon doing Leon things. They all get plenty of "who's your friend in that pic 👀" messages. One time Claire is taking a snap of Leon crashed out on Ashley's sofa chair. His mouth is open and he's snoring and she thinks it's absolutely hilarious. She would have got away with it too if her camera didn't flash and Leon didn't chase her around the house to steal her phone. Of course Ashley and Sherry caught the whole thing on video.
Aaaaanyways, I have a whole post-RE6 AU where Leon, Sherry, Hunnigan, Helena, Ashley, Claire, and Chris all make up the 'Washington D.C. Crew' and they're all best friends and hang out together. If you guys are interested in more, please let me know! Also, I wouldn't mind doing some of these for RE7/RE8 Ethan and The Lords if people were interested.
#resident evil#resident evil headcanons#leon kennedy#claire redfield#resi#plz no sexyleon#lmao please indulge me i just live in resident evil hell everyday

Title: Lovebug (14/14)
Summary:
“It might be a bug.”
“A bug?”
“Sometimes the developers of this application make mistakes. This is our first time meeting I’m sure so…Isn’t it a bit weird that we just met for the first time and it rings like this? And for two strangers to coincidentally ring each other’s alarms?“
Levi is the developer of the Love Alarm App and Hange is married to Zeke.

Is this all that there is to life? A glaring question that came unexpectedly, in between reading through codes for his nth freelance project the past few years.
In response, Levi closed his eyes, sat back and reflected. A part of him may have been asking that question for a while and slowly, Levi started to understand why he was asked that in the first place.
A few minutes ago, he had been strangely happy to see his code compiling at the first try. And just a few hours ago, he had been enthusiastic at running a debugger through a code and finding a few typos to fix.
Happiness. That was happiness right?
That part of him continued to nag. It soured that 'happiness,' leaving a burning dissatisfaction inside him. You’ve experienced better moments, happier moments.
Then Levi got fed up. He reached into the back of his mind, he remembered, then something stopped him from reminiscing for a while longer.
Something strange. Something buried.
He hadn’t allowed himself to feel much since he first moved into that new city. He had allowed the novelty and the business to carry him through his first months. But the novelty of a new beginning never lasted long.
Too shaken to even bother applying for a new job, Levi opted to work freelance. Consequently, his only companions were the four walls of his studio apartment and the occasional voices from next door.
There was only so much which could stimulate interest. His mind continued to search for them and naturally, time continued to move along with it. Routine and episodes of ennui seemed to last infinities in the moment. But in retrospect, it felt like they all happened too fast.
He had made sense of time in milestones, milestones worth ten times the refreshing feeling of running a debugger through code or the fleeting euphoria of compiling codes at the first try.
Is that all that there is to life? Eventually, he made sense of that strange voice. There was reason to that question.
That day was another milestone. If it wasn't for his nagging mind, he could have missed it.
It was a blustery autumn day in late October, the weather similar to the last view he had of his home five years ago. Shifting his gaze from the window of his present apartment, he took a quick look at the calendar and it was like a dam had ended up spilling open inside him.
The five year mark was a bittersweet milestone, five years since he left home. The fifth year rang more loudly than every year before that. Maybe because five was such a perfect number, or perhaps because he had been keeping something in for a while.
He felt a release. Then a reprieve from the monotony, a reprieve from the five years avoiding his old life. Levi found himself opening his browser tab, typing the words ‘love alarm’ on the search box and deleting it a second later.
An aimless and useless sequence of movements. He didn’t need a quick google search to know how it was doing.
The love alarm had become a household name even all the way in his side of the world. With his very human need to go out, whether it be for groceries, shopping or just some fresh air, Levi couldn’t completely ignore it. With the right decisions, Levi could choose not to give so much as a side glance at the people walking, heads bent down, staring at the number of hearts on their application.
When he went out though, even with his music at full blast, he would hear the familiar alarm as he walked through crowds.
At first, it had left a pang in his chest, a brief bout of nausea, perhaps disgust or embarrassment at his old life.
It had been five years since he first arrived though and it turned out, time did heal.
Levi looked through the wikipedia page of the love alarm and he found, it hurt more like a raw scar than a stab in his chest or a crushing weight. The nausea, the pang in his chest that plagued him years before were weak if almost nonexistent.
Curiosity took over.
He took his phone from the side of his desk and downloaded the application again. The name Jaeger was under the title screen and right next to it were the words ‘All rights reserved.”
Would would have felt like an ache in the chest years ago, felt more like a mosquito bite. Levi was just slightly annoyed. It did nothing to stop him though from registering again and looking through the application interface.
Nothing much had changed. There were some slight changes to the skin of the registration page, a change in the name of the company at the bottom. Levi purposely touched the activate button rapidly and found he had crashed the application.
That was one bug that he never got to fix. He turned his phone to the side, noting the way the screen glitched as it adjusted to the landscape orientation of the phone. Another bug Levi never got to fix.
Then he wondered who the developer on the other end had been to have never even caught it.
Biometrics registered, Levi activated the alarm to find no hearts. He couldn’t help but entertain that slight disappointment. Of course no hearts would have appeared though. He hadn’t even interacted with his neighbors.
It would have been creepy it rang. Letting out a sardonic laugh just loud enough for himself, he leaned back on the chair and stared at the ceiling, forcing his thoughts back to whatever coding freelance project he’d been dealing with a few minutes ago.
Work came in freelance projects. They were enough for rent, for savings and some capacity to eat out occasionally.
A simple yet comfortable life. But is that all that there is to life? That voice continued to tear into his work related thoughts. Levi gave in to the nagging thought again. He started scrolling through wikipedia articles detailing use, detailing acquisition history, he found another key word under related articles, more interesting than ‘love alarm.’
Mood Alarm.
It sent a strange shiver through the back of his neck. Levi rolled his shoulders, relieving the tension that came with the last few eons of reflection. He let out a whistle, opened the new article and scrolled down towards references.
There were lists of articles.
Partner of Zeke Jaeger and freshly minted PhD graduate Doctor Hange Zoe release Mood Alarm.
Doctor Hange Zoe. Something inside him was fighting for control. He couldn’t bring himself to click the link. At the same time though, there was this curiosity inside him that he couldn’t seem to get to the bottom of.
Under the link to the article was the official website.
At the front page, there was a boring and overly professional introduction Levi didn’t bother to read
Below them, everything else had been interesting enough to give more than a second long glance.
The list of functionalities. The color codes. Then newly launched dashboard functionalities, almost a carbon copy of the plan Levi had sent years back.
“Fucking hell, you actually did it,” Levi muttered. He couldn’t help but just allow the smile that tugged at his lips some control. Excitement had him searching for the application on the play store, downloading it and methodically going through the same registration process as the love alarm.
It didn’t look much like the mood alarm Levi had worked on years ago. He saw hints of it though and worked from there to admire it.
The front end had been cleaned up. The font chosen fit the silver-to-white gradient of the application. When Levi clicked ‘activate,’ the screen loaded.
The colors mixed against one another for a second, an aesthetic choice of animation that Levi couldn’t help but be amused with.
Red. Yellow. Blue. Purple. Green. Orange.
The colors continued to mix. Then some disappeared as if they had lost themselves in some colorful war.
Then it was only blue and yellow. The two colors danced against one another for a few seconds longer before they disappeared too. More specifically, they bundled against one another.
Green. It took him at least five seconds to get that reading.
He didn’t have to look at the guide on the website to know what it meant.
Sad happy? Or happy sad? Whatever that feeling was, Levi felt no need to introspect, or maybe he had been too lazy to.
It had been a while since he had even let himself feel something. The green on his screen, the feeling that accompanied it, seemed more like an old friend he hadn’t talked to a while.
If he had any ability at introspection, maybe it had already rusted. Still, he let those emotions inside him, that yellow and that blue do their work.
They had him turning off the mood alarm, then turning off the love alarm. Something inside him still hesitated to delete the applications. Then it had him considering the space on his phone for just a second.
He downloaded another app that night. A familiar app with a flame, then another one with a bee. Only months into his new life in a new city with a new job, Levi was already bored— and if he had to admit it—terribly, terribly lonely.
And maybe the best way to cure it was to spend the whole night swiping.
***
Finding a companion wasn’t as easy as desperation and a few second long rush of confidence made it out to be.
Perhaps, online dating was a rash idea, an uncharacteristic move.
Didn't he reject Petra years ago? How could he date anyone else? Petra… How is she… With nothing much to do but wait for his date, he found himself texting Petra as he waited in the cafe.
He sent a few thank you messages at her well wishes. They exchanged brief updates and Petra’s own updates dragged on for longer.
Her life was more eventful than his.
Petra had started dating Oluo. She had found someone who loved her, just as much as she loved him. Keeping a correspondence with her only highlighted points for reflection for Levi. The more he reflected, the more questions came up. The more he reflected, the more complicated the questions became.
He was lonely but could he be picky? At the same time, did he even have the heart to put anyone through the shitty experience of a half hearted courtship?
Hange’s words echoed in his head, not in any specific string, a few parts in words, a few parts in phrases.
Considering the circumstances… Love is a choice.
When he let her words echo through him, he managed to grip a presence long gone. A presence and a relationship, he clarified, that had never been his in the first place.
He never did completely brush away the guilt that accompanied every passing thought of Hange. There was this strange acceptance though that appended it, and it had him a little more discerning, a little more prudent.
If he couldn’t have her, he could always just keep her close in his own personal way.
“Have you heard of the love alarm?”
How long had she been there? How long had she been talking?
Right, Levi was on a date. She had said words before that question and Levi could have sworn they had exchanged greetings even before that.
“In passing,” Levi said. He manifested some reality from the words, as if a firm response was enough to forget decades worth of overtime and testing.
“It’s this application we can use to test compatibility… So at least we know if this could work.”
Levi listened with some fake intent as she explained how the love alarm worked. He made sure to nod at points where her tone had gone a little higher or louder.
“What do you think?” There was some finality to her voice, an expectant look on her face.
Levi hummed in thought.. “I don’t believe in using an app to check compatibility. What about when we consider circumstances? Get to know each other… Then decide if it could work?”
She looked at her phone for a second, then back at Levi, her brows furrowed in confusion.
Levi shook his head. “Sorry, I just don’t believe in things like the love alarm, it seems just like horoscopes or Myer Briggs to me. Compatibility, relationships, they’re just gonna be choices we make anyway.” He found himself guiltily looking away as he said those last points.
The pout that played at his date’s lips was evidence enough, there probably wouldn’t be a second date. “It’s not like our love alarm’s would have rung anyway,” she said.
It had been a while since Levi dated though and he started to realize, maybe his filter and his social skills had rusted just a bit.
***
Love is a choice.
It looked like he might have been the only one to believe that. He had managed to piss off countless other dates with his own ‘love is a choice’ schtick.
And he had been dating semi regularly for the past year already. Yet, nothing was coming up fruitful.
How the hell did Hange even manage to get married? Or maybe Hange had just been the exception. He then concluded, Hange just had too many other loveable qualities which could make anyone want to snap her up early on.
The more he entertained the thought of Hange, the heavier his own chest became. Then he stopped entertaining her then the cycle would start again, a very vicious cycle.
It just so happened that sometimes the thought of ‘Hange’ manifested as some domineering thought. ‘Love is a choice’ and the strange sensation that came with his whole body protesting, rebelling in their own little way worked hand in hand.
He was confused and consequently desperate enough to open the mood alarm for some inkling of comprehension. He would focus on the way the colors switched among one another, disappearing, always revealing a yellow and a light blue dancing between one another then always ending with a light blue.
Sometimes he was blue. Sometimes he was green.
Ane he continued to check. After all, he mood alarm had become a beautiful and constant companion. He had deleted the love alarm but kept the mood alarm close.
“What do you think of the love alarm?”
How many people are gonna ask about that fucking application?
Zeke had just been a little too good at marketing. It was the nth time someone had broken the ice of a first date with that fucking question and Levi regretted not making a drinking game out of it. Maybe he would have been able to drink enough to forget that cursed product.
“Are you okay?” his new date asked.
He had spent the past few minutes too silent, not thinking. “Nifa…” That was her name right? He cleared his throat. “I’m fine.”
She looked as nervous as he did, or even more nervous. That part was comforting at least. In a way, her demeanor seemed a little more pleasant, more genuinely curious than wary. “I asked just a second ago, have you ever used that love alarm?” she said in response.
Levi followed the same script. "In passing."
“Would you like to try it out? Just to make sure we’re on the same page, relationship wise.”
“I’d rather we relied on circumstances and compatibility to make the choice for us. Get to know each other maybe…” When it came to suggestions, Levi had revised his script just a bit. Too many people got offended by his invalidating horoscopes and Myer Briggs type for some weird reason. “Like get to know each other, like…” Levi trailed off for a second, allowing himself a pregnant pause. ”... Elizabeth and Darcy?”
Nifa had cocked her head to the side curiously, thought for a long second and smiled just a bit wider. “You read Pride and Prejudice?”
Levi nodded subtly. “A while back,.”
She paused for a second, seeming deep in thought. “Well… Now that I think about it, you might be right,” Nifa said. “This compatibility thing… Your idea of love. I think it makes sense.”
“Really? You think so?”
“Yeah, why?” Nifa asked.
Levi dropped his shoulders in relief, the weight of at least a hundred failed dates fell off his shoulders. “I’ve been dating for years and I feel like you’re the only one who actually said that.”
Nifa didn’t reply immediately and the longer Levi sat there, the more clearly he saw her face. Surprise morphed into something that seemed more like pity. Then, the chronic pang in his chest came back.
A first love did that to people maybe? A painful first love lost had that special power to maybe just twist his own philosophies, to make him almost disgusted at his own creations and the way it had challenged his own convictions.
Are you scared? Levi thought to himself. He couldn’t be too sure how he was handling himself in front of Nifa. He looked down at his hands, opening and closing them a few times and if he looked closely, he could almost feel those uncomfortable twinges in his wrist that came from years of coding.
“I’m willing to put the time into it if you are.” Nifa’s voice was more gentle and it flowed as if she had sensed the stiffness in his voice.
Levi didn’t respond immediately and suddenly their little corner of the crowded cafe was eerily silent. There was a melancholy that had blanketed their little corner despite the Saturday afternoon crowd.
Nifa seemed like she was trying to break away from it with some light conversation. “Hey, have you heard of the mood alarm?”
“The mood alarm?” Levi let that half smile creep up his lips, just high enough to be more invisible than obvious. Three words from a stranger and his emotions were reduced to a mess.
He once again felt that twinge again at his rests and that sleepless night, and her. He was remembering her in his office through sleepy exhausted eyes, with a cocktail dress and a sandwich bag in one hand.
There was also something amusing and painfully ironic about hearing his own brainchild, from someone so casually, as if it had turned into some household name while he wasn’t looking.
The conversation was getting painful, painfully interesting and the masochist in Levi was gripping him and pulling him back to reality. “Like the love alarm…” Levi added.
“Well, they’re products from the Jaeger corporation… You know the Jaeger family right?” Nifa added.
Levi could only be thankful he hadn’t been sipping at his tea then. He probably could have choked. How could he ever forget Zeke Jaeger?
He might have gotten a lot better at hiding his own disgust or Nifa could have been too deep in thought. She continued to talk. “They bought Love Alarm a few years back.”
“I know the Jaeger family,” Levi said.
“So you know about their eldest son, the heir of the Jaeger corporation… And his partner?”
Levi took a sip of tea, not bothering to respond.
Nifa may have taken that as a ‘no.’“His partner was working towards a PhD in psychology and apparently that was her final project. The codes for the mood alarm are very similar to the love alarm apparently."
“Oh?” Levi asked, feigning interest.
Soon, it turned into something genuine. Nifa was offering new information. “She got the PhD a few years ago and soon after that, the application was launched. And now they’re launching a solution for hospitals.”
“What kind of solution?” Levi asked.
“Wait, have you ever used the mood alarm? Or do you know how it works?” Nifa asked. “Anyway, I realized I ended up digressing here… The point I was trying to make is, the one who developed the mood alarm was able to prove that whatever measurements they use for the love alarm, are related to emotions. And what if, understanding how we feel when we work towards a relationship is a better determinant of whether the relationship could work?”
Levi nodded quickly, an attempt to be polite. At that point though, he wasn’t too interested in the point she had been trying to make “I’m familiar with the application and how it works. But you mentioned something about a solution for hospitals…” He didn’t think it was worth lying. He didn’t need a long winded explanation of the alarm he made. He needed an explanation of what Hange had been making."
Nifa didn’t seem to get the message. “So, the application will determine your emotions for you--- I have one right now and we could use it over time to articulate how we feel.” She pulled out her phone and dropped it on the table. “I think analyzing our own emotions would do a better job than relying on how the love alarm processes the emotions.”
There was something surreal about seeing a user explain it to him, as if they knew it more than him.
For a while, he couldn’t help but just entertain the possibility that in her own way, Nifa may have known more. With someone explaining and demonstrating, he was more easily able to make sense of the changes that had been implemented since Hange acquired it.
The app icon was reminiscent of the love alarm, two rings around it but instead of a heart in between, there was an icon, an elegant cross between a flower and a color wheel.
Red. Blue. Yellow. In between the primary colors were purple, green and orange.
Nifa activated it and held the phone between her fingertips. Just like the night when Levi had first played with it, the colored blobs swam amongst one another again, each blob would disappear one by one, leaving the remaining colors.
Yellow and Orange. “Looks like I’m happy,” Nifa commented. “So apparently the new dashboard allows us to connect this reading on the phone to a PC and get a more detailed explanation, numbers, heart rate, all the like.”
“You seem to know a lot about the app,” Levi mused.
Nifa cocked her head to one side. “Well, I’m into psychology too. I work as a psychologist in one of the hospitals. Our hospital is one of the first ones to buy software licenses so I’ve done my research.” She hummed, looking straight at him for a second as if studying him. “Now that I think about it, your job wasn’t on your profile. What do you do for a living?”
Levi’s response was automatic. “IT work.” He was suddenly self conscious about even mentioning the word ‘developer.’
“Ooooh... So you’d probably figure out how this app works much faster than I would.” Nifa sighed. “And you could probably help reassure me about this."
“Reassure you about what?”
“I’m honestly pretty nervous about rolling out this software.”
“Why?”
“Well, it’s relatively new, a few bugs would come up here and there.”
“All softwares are going to face new bugs with every update. It’s never ending,” Levi said nonchalantly.
“Spoken like a true IT guy,” Nifa joked. She took a sip of her shake and stared down at his tea and up at him again. “Say, since you’re in IT, you think you can hook us up with someone?”
“Hook you up with someone?” Levi asked. His mind was going places more suited for a tinder date than a conversation on career. He raised one eyebrow in question. He couldn’t be too sure of what she meant just yet.
It looked like she had started to understand that double entendre. Nifa blushed then let out a cough. “No, no. Our company is looking to build a small support team.”
“An IT support team?” Levi asked.
“Well, people who could focus on learning the product, dealing with whatever bugs, testing them, compiling them and sending them over to the Mood Alarm team. You think you’d know anyone tech savvy? Maybe familiar with how biotechnology works?
“I could try to look around…” Levi said.
“Great!” Nifa chimed
By some magic, the conversation shifted elsewhere. Nifa had a way with conversation, keeping some sort of a flow, talking about her own job and getting him to talk about his freelance projects.
Levi’s thoughts on the hospital solution though were an ubiquitous part of his mind space. That was the whole point of the investment right? Back then, Zeke and Hange had plans on selling it to hospitals.
And there was a free trial. That night, Levi had been curious enough to click the ‘book a free trial button’ and to even fill out the first few lines.
Organization name? He didn't have one.
Purpose? To catch up with his own brain child maybe.
He ended up staring at the blank screen for a while, wondering where the hell he would get an organization and a valid purpose.
He wanted to check it out, he really did. And he was a little salty that they required a background check before they even allowed trials for a project he created.
Curiosity became desperation. With desperation, came creativity, audacity. He took his phone with the intention of just asking Nifa a few questions, only to see there was an unread message from her.
Thanks for today! I had a lot of fun. Hopefully, we can plan something soon. I might be busy with work this week but maybe the week after?
Levi stared at her message and composed a quick reply, pleasantries forgotten.
You mentioned something about IT support openings in the hospital...
***
The hiring manager introduced himself as Moblit but he didn't say much else. Instead, he spent the next few minutes looking through Levi's resume, his brow wrinkled.
"Is there something wrong with my resume?" Levi asked, breaking the silence. He had kept it minimalistic, only sticking to odd jobs the past five years.
Moblit shook his head. "Nothing, it just doesn't look like you have support role experience."
"Do I need experience in a support role? I think I'm familiar enough with how apps work to stand in as one," Levi said. Should he mention that he had done the support work before?
"So you've compiled tickets, sent them over to developers?"
I'm the developer who deals with those bullshit tickets. He thought to himself. On the outside though, he nodded and leaned a bit more forward on the table. It wasn’t too difficult to show interest. He was genuinely interested, having given in to that curiosity-turned-desperation.
"Well, if you're interested in taking the job then…” Moblit said. “Let's see how much you know about the mood alarm app." He opened a folder. "It's a relatively new solution, so I don't expect you to know much but if you've heard of the love alarm?"
"I have."
"Well they're from the same corporation…"
Information on their history flew into one ear and out the other. "Do you have any more questions for me?" Levi asked. He could have interrupted Moblit there but he didn’t want to hear about a history he actually experienced first hand.
Moblit cleared his throat. "Well, if you could tell me how you think the mood alarm works? Then I’ll give you a list of common bugs and can you tell me how you will go about raising them to developers?
***
Six years hadn’t done much to make him forget. He had been working with the love alarm for almost a decade after all.
And the mood alarm? He had a strange connection to it, he couldn’t explain.
The code wasn’t open source. Of course it wouldn’t. That was an enterprise application and they wouldn’t want any hacker just randomly getting it. Yet, why did he feel so offended at not having access?
“Hey Levi, how would you handle this?”
“Handle what?” Levi didn’t look up from his monitor immediately. The voice and the question have all were all too familiar and it wasn’t urgent anyway.
“Levi, take a look…” Farlan seemed more frustrated than a second ago.
Levi looked at Farlan’s screen. Another display issue. He was all too familiar with the bugs and it looked like the love alarm and the mood alarm were coming up with the same issues. “Click the activate button three times really fast, right click the desktop, select inspect and take a screenshot. We send it over to the developers on the mood alarm team,” Levi said. That had become routine after a while, yet somehow, his two colleagues Farlan and Isabel were still asking questions.
Maybe because he was the only one who understood what the hell the developers needed to see to actually get to the bottom of the problem.
“Make sure to check it in both light mode and dark mode,” Levi said. “And also, there’s a known bug for the phone app, check if turning on the alarm affects your ability to receive notifications from other apps.” Those words had sent a wave of nostalgia through him. That was one of the bugs he had gotten around to fixing with the love alarm.
“Hey...”Isabel’s voice sounded from next to him. Levi turned around, almost jumping when he saw she had been close enough to look over his shoulder. “What are you researching?”
It wouldn't look good if he slacked off at work in front of colleagues a good few years his junior. Levi closed the tab. “Just my own research on mood alarm.” And when he looked at his codes a little longer, then back at Isabel who seemed almost confused, Levi realized it had looked more like extra work than anything else.
He spent the whole morning on ‘extra work, watching the API calls, making notes to himself to check the codes he had sent Hange years back just to see how much had changed.
“You finished all your tasks today and you still wanna do research on the mood alarm?” Farlan asked, a look of utter amazement on his face.
“What can I say? This app is pretty interesting.” it wasn’t a lie. Watching the growth of his own child from afar, was a fun thing to do.
“It honestly feels like you’ve done this type of work before."
“I did something similar,” Levi said.
“What kind of place did you work in before?” Isabel asked excitedly, her tasks also forgotten.
“I don’t wanna talk about it,” Levi answered, his tone unchanged.
“Something like the love alarm?”
Levi nodded. “Maybe that’s the reason I can figure things out pretty fast,” he said. The best plan of action was to digress.
“So that means we could make you handle the harder cases?” Farlan snickered.
“I’d rather you learn how to deal with others on your own,” Levi said. “I’ve worked with these apps for a long time. The bugs never end.”
***
“Moblit’s saying you’re doing a pretty good job picking out the bugs,” Nifa spoke above the bustle of the lunch time crowd.
“Are we?” Levi asked. He kept his words brief, not wanting to waste too much energy speaking over the others in the hospital cafeteria.
“Well, he was talking about you mostly,” Nifa said. “Most big issues get resolved with each release. And Moblit was saying that our support team just gives really good feedback.”
“The developers do the work. All we do is find the bugs.” Levi started to pick more meticulously at his salad
Nifa shook her head. “I think the support team deserves credit too. It’s difficult figuring out whether issues are user issues or there’s really a bug. Isabel also told me you find ways to reproduce it quickly.”
“Do I?” His responses were getting less and less creative. There just wasn’t much to say and the compliments were making him more and more uncomfortable by the second.
Moblit was a life saver. He had broken out of the crowd, running to Nifa, an urgent but excited expression on his face. “Nifa, you’ve got to hear this.”
Levi used that brief distraction to shovel more salad into his mouth.
Moblit had spoken just beneath the sounds of other conversations and Levi couldn’t make out what he had said. He did make out the urgency in Nifa’s face and the excitement. Whatever Moblit had said was contagious.
“When are they coming?” Nifa asked, her voice much louder than Moblit’s.
Levi stood up, gathering his plate, his utensils and his unfinished salad. “If I’m not supposed to be in this conversation…”
Moblit shook his head. “Levi, no, please stay. I’d rather you hear this since this is related to your line of work too.”
“Why?” Levi raised one eyebrow.
“Zeke Jaeger and his partner Doctor Hange Zoe, they’re planning to visit,” Moblit said.
Levi couldn’t even tell what expression he had on then.
Maybe Moblit had interpreted shock as confusion. “Zeke Jaeger is the owner of the love alarm. Hange Zoe’s the creator of the mood alarm… In case you didn't know.”
***
“Hey, I wanna see her… Is this how she looks like?” Isabel’s voice was a whisper, a very loud whisper. “She looks smart.”
Farlan’s voice wasn’t any softer. “Well, that’s what you’d expect from the mastermind behind the mood alarm right? I heard Zeke Jaeger bought her the love alarm so she could look through the code and make the mood alarm for herself.”
“Where did you hear that?” Isabel asked.
“Watch the interviews.”
The click and clack of the keyboard. Then there was the sound of voices coming from the loud speaker from Farlan’s computer.
Then Hange’s very familiar voice.
Levi didn’t want to listen. “You know, if you spend too much time looking through this. You’re not gonna get anything done.” He forced his voice into something louder than what he was comfortable with. “Don’t you two have other tasks to do?”
“Aren’t you excited to meet them?” Isabel rolled her chair next to Levi.
No way in hell am I meeting them. “I’m planning on taking a leave,” he said.
“Wait, why?” Isabel seeming heartbroken, as if Levi taking a leave was the most terrible thing in the world.
“Well, as employees we’re entitled to leaves right?” Levi asked emotionlessly, willing himself not to at all be affected by Isabel’s puppy dog face.
Farlan sighed. “You’re the best one at this type of work among the three of us. You know, this is a good opportunity for you to get noticed.”
“I don’t wanna get noticed,” Levi said, as he focused back again on the screen, refreshing their ticketing software a little bit faster that time. It really was an uneventful afternoon. He couldn’t blame Farlan and Isabel for doing nothing.
“It’s a big money, a chance at a big career move,” Farlan said, raising his voice as if that could have done anything to convince Levi.
Levi looked up from the monitor and back to Farlan. “Do you really want me out of here?”
Farlan shrugged. “I dunno, you just seem too overqualified for this kind of job.”
Levi sighed. “Believe me, I’m happy to be here.” He continued to click refresh, just in case anything could have halted that already seemingly awkward conversation. The reason why he didn’t want to run into Zeke or Hange… Was it written all over his face?
Just in case Farlan and Isabel were mind readers, Levi kept quiet, kept his eyes glued on the screen and he prayed the day would get busier somehow.
It did. But it got busy so close to the end of the day and overtime seemed inevitable.
“We’re not receiving any readings.”
The same exact fucking line, from ten different customers from different hospital branches around the country. “You’re fucking kidding me,” Levi muttered.
He opened all the test devices, only to find, none of them were receiving readings from the mood alarm either. He was sure though, he was annoyed, very very annoyed. Maybe even angry. “Try testing,” he ordered.
Farlan and Isabel were more emotional than he was. If it didn’t work for them, it probably wasn’t working at all.
They had full trust on him. Isabel and Farlan nodded and they went through the devices quickly. All test devices exhausted and there was nothing much to do. Levi was convinced it was an issue that could only be investigated on the backend. “We’re done for the day.”
“We have to send a report right?”
Levi started to pack his bag. “Send a report saying we’re not getting any readings,” he said with a shrug. “It’s probably a backend issue or an issue with their API.”
“You sure we can’t do anything from our side?” Farlan pressed.
Levi shook his head. “None.” He logged out, slung his backpack over his shoulder and exited the office.
He sensed their disappointment in him. In his months working there, Levi had never left the office without doing a thorough investigation and writing a detailed report.
That might be the first time in months, they would give something completely unhelpful for the developers. That wasn’t Levi’s intention though. There were just some things that were better off investigated on his own personal PC.
For the first time in a while, Levi didn’t go straight for the shower when he arrived back home. He booted up his own PC. When he checked his cloud account, he found the private repository with all the codes from the love alarm and the mood alarm was still there.
It hadn’t been touched in years though.
He scrolled through the code, allowing that wave of nostalgic to wash over him gently. Having been the only one who worked on the base, Levi was very very familiar with it. Memories came quickly with the nostalgia. There was a point where the server was down and he remembered the hundreds of support tickets about the temporarily malfunctioning love alarm.
No readings were coming through. Levi did a quick calculation of the time zones of his own city and of the mood alarm headquarters. Then he looked through the code again.
Convinced that it was a fair theory, Levi opened his pseudo email, entered the support email for the mood alarm and left just one sentence on the email body.
I’m convinced one of your devs left a debugger on one of these codes on the backend.
A few years ago, he had been guilty of leaving a debugger running overnight, fucking up the whole command system of the love alarm.
He copied and pasted a part of the code and the sent the email off. For all he knew, the mood alarm could have branched off far from the love alarm, rendering his theory completely stupid. Still, it was a theory worth entertaining.
The issues from work forgotten, Levi started to open his other emails, finding one from Petra on the third page, dated months ago.
Just a reminder that he hadn’t opened that email in months. “A wedding invite?”
Petra Ral and Oluo Bozado invite you to celebrate their wedding…
He didn’t need the rest of it to convince himself to go. He only needed to look at the date under, conveniently a week after Hange and Zeke were scheduled to visit the hospital where he worked.
He sent off two emails that night.
One to Petra, a very very late RSVP.
Then one to management, a request for a two week leave. For personal reasons.
A wedding always made a good personal reason. That was probably only half his actual personal reason though.
***
“I didn’t even expect you to come.” Petra seemed happy.
It could have been the make up or her natural blush. She was a glowing bride, glowing bright enough that Levi was starting to feel lonely.
“It’s been a while,” Levi said. “And you two are looking good.”
“How’s life abroad?” Petra asked.
“It’s fine,” Levi said.
“You adjusted well?” Petra asked again.
“Yeah, I guess I did.” Levi took a sip of his wine.
“You managed to get a software engineering job there?” That time it was Oluo who asked.
“Something similar,” Levi said. He started to shake his glass a bit, feigning deep consideration. Maybe that would explain his inability to respond. In truth, he was in no mood to make conversation but when the bride and the groom had gone out of their way to sit next to him on the bench outside their party, and they had gone through all the trouble of asking, it was only polite that he kept his side of the conversation.
Somewhere along the exchanges, Petra brought up a question. And whether it had been appropriate or not, Levi couldn’t tell but he thought it worth an answer at least.
“Have you met anyone?” Petra asked.
“What?” Levi responded.
“I dunno… I guess someone who makes you feel good? Someone who manages to ring your love alarm?” Petra gave him a knowing look.
Levi only had to shift his gaze from Petra to the seemingly blank face of Oluo to know, Petra had at least kept that part to herself. To the others, his alarm ringing with Hange could have been just a bug.
Levi shook his head. “I haven’t touched the love alarm in years,” he admitted.
Petra seemed more understanding. “We haven’t touched it in years either.”
Levi raised his eyebrows. “Really?”
Petra stared ahead, looking deep in thought. She turned to Oluo. “Well, I guess a part of us wanted to build this organically, get to know each other first. And maybe that’s the best way to find people. I think the love alarm just causes unnecessary chaos sometimes.”
Levi only had to look back at his past five years to see it. To be honest, he could actually put the blame on the love alarm for completely uprooting his life. He couldn't say he totally agreed though. He didn’t regret the time with Hange either.
But he wasn’t going to deny her credit where credit was due. “You make sense.”
It wasn’t as simple as that though. Somehow, Hange’s own words had torn into the silence. Just for him. The love alarm causes chaos but sometimes it can tie loose ends.
And for him, it had been both. It had caused chaos but somehow, meeting Hange, having gotten to know her, having gotten to talk to her had tied some loose ends inside him.
What kind of loose ends? He couldn’t be too sure.
“Even when you don’t use the love alarm now, have you met other people?” Petra was still very interested in his love life.
Oluo should have been silently uncomfortable about that. Levi couldn’t tell with a quick glance.
“I’ve met a few people though… There’s someone named Nifa,” Levi said,
“Next time you come here, you’ll take her for a visit? Make sure to introduce us to her?” Petra asked.
“Or maybe next time, it will be us visiting,” Oluo added.
The brief conversation ended soon after, with a few exchanged greetings and a promise to bring Nifa. In case something ever happened between him and NIfa.
By the end of the night, he had made a promise to himself not to use that love alarm to find his next love.
Petra was right, the love alarm could cause unnecessary chaos. Besides, love is a choice right?

Levi came back from his very relaxing two week leave to two words that made his stomach turn.
Doctor Zoe. That was what Farlan and Isabel called her.
“Doctor Zoe…” Levi repeated. The words tasted unfamiliar. Suddenly, the road trip, the beach trip and just the quiet meetings in the cafe all seemed like just a fevered dream.
“And she stopped to talk to all of us!” Isabel sang, her eyes filled with wonder. “You should have stayed. I swear, I feel like you would have gotten along. She never stops talking. You two could have talked about the mood alarm for hours.”
“She sounds tiring to be with,” Levi said, an attempt at a halfhearted reply.
Farlan grinned, an alarmingly knowing expression on his face. “Don’t lie, you would have enjoyed at least listening. You’re way more enthusiastic about the mood alarm than we are.”
“I’m just being a good employee.” Levi shook his head, as if that was enough to erase the regret that shoved itself into his throat and down to his chest.
“She really made sure to talk to everyone,” Isabel said. “And she stayed for a few days longer. Maybe the plans changed since she went alone.”
“Wait, she came alone?” Levi said. Don’t regret. Don’t you dare regret leaving.
Farlan nodded in response. “Moblit explained this to us before they came.” He turned to Isabel as if expecting some explanation from her.
“I can’t be too sure either, I’ve only heard a bit about it. And rich people like the Jaegers, they like to keep their personal lives a secret right?” Isabel answered.
Farlan shrugged. “Anyway, from what Moblit told me, they intended to visit all the major customers including our hospital chain. They’ve been planning this tour for months, maybe even years but Doctor Zoe ended up going alone.”
“Did you ever find out why?” Levi kept his voice soft, anything louder and he might just look more invested. He turned back to the unopened tickets on his screen. From his peripherals, he could see Farlan and Isabel exchanging glances.
It was Farlan who spoke up. “I have a theory.”
“Tell me,” Levi said.
“They fought.”
“Okay, couples fight.” Levi continued to click at the tickets, opening them one by one, just to feel productive.
“Yeah, but it must have been a big fight right?” Isabel added. “I did some research on Doctor Zoe after we met her and apparently, they were having problems even years ago. Apparently, there are rumors that her husband bought the love alarm to save their marriage.”
“Where the hell did you get that info?” Farlan sounded incredulous.
Isabel chuckled mischievously. “The dark, dark internet.”
“That can’t be true.” Farlan shook his head in disbelief.
“I can’t really prove it anymore. A lot of the threads online that actually discuss this get taken down by the admin. But I swear, now that I think about it, it does make sense. I read some articles, no one expected Zeke Jaeger to buy the love alarm… Some said he did it to save the love alarm after a major bug showed up that could have prevented PR….Apparently, there was a certain point a few years ago, where there were photos of Doctor Zoe with another man. I tried looking for the photos but I can’t find them anymore.”
“You really got invested in her love life huh?”
Isabel groaned. “I couldn’t help it. She seemed so nice and she talked to us a lot even when we were just support, she took the time to teach us and she’s just so humble…”
“But what if she really did cheat on her husband?” Farlan challenged. “I mean, the rumors have to have been there for a reason right?”
“Do you think she looks like the type to cheat?” Isabel asked. “That very honest and open face?”
Farlan coughed in surprise. “She doesn’t for sure---but rumors don’t come out of nowhere right?”
“You two, go back to work,” Levi said. While the two had been working, he had been assigning tickets to them, an ingenious way to compose himself.
“Wait not yet, what do you think Levi? You might have better intuition than we do.”
“Intuition?” Levi repeated, one eyebrow raised.
“Does she really look like the type to cheat?” Farlan asked.
Levi continued to stare at the screen, not willing to risk showing them whatever expression played at his face then. “I didn’t meet her. You two did so you’re better qualified to answer that question. Tell me, does she look like the type to cheat?”
Farlan paused for a second, then narrowed his eyes at Levi. “I think I have a question which you might be more qualified to answer,” Farlan said. “You’re pretty good at finding bugs. Have you ever done research on the love alarm bug? What do you think the bug was… The one which made Zeke Jaeger buy the app?”
“I don’t think there was a bug,” Levi said.
“What do you mean?” Farlan pressed.
“Get back to work you two.” Levi kept his voice firm, loud and authoritative. Something he would have rather not done, if it hadn’t been for the weight which came with what should have been a light piece of gossip, and his whittling ability to keep a stoic demeanor.
The deep dark internet. Levi watched his two companions. Their eyes were once again fixed on the screen, Farlan’s fingers were flying over the keyboard, Isabel was playing with some test device.
Deep enough at work for Levi to take his own quick break. He opened an incognito tab and put his headphones on.
One video or one article, and he’d get back to work. He found an interview, the opening questions had been the same familiar ones Farlan had been playing on speaker months ago.
He played the first few questions at twice the speed. He knew the answers already.
What inspired you to make the mood alarm?
“Love alarm… Codes… Yadayadayada…” Levi muttered just a loud enough for himself. Hange had been careful not to mention anything about a developer. He could see the way she had shifted gazes for just a second, seeming uncomfortable.
He couldn’t blame her. Isabel had said so herself, in the deep dark internet, maybe there were rumors of an affair.
And some journalists were aware.
Personal Life? Around the point that someone asked about her personal life, Levi slowed the clip down. They had timed it, to the exact point where Hange had tensed up and looked away for just a second.
“Can you tell us about your relationship with Zeke Jaeger? How has it been?”
“How did you feel when you realized he bought you the love alarm? Is it true he bought it to win you back?”
Hange was admirably professional about it. “We’re digressing now,” she said with a light hearted tone, a laugh which seemed more rehearsed than actually Hange’s.
Is it true you had an affair with another man? It wasn’t loud enough for Hange to have heard it, just a sound among others. When Levi had been looking for that question and it rang more loudly for him. He rewinded the video a few times just to make sure.
What the hell… No we didn’t… We. Didn’t. Have. An. Affair.
“Levi, are you okay?” Isabel asked
“What?”
“You were talking to yourself just now.”
Levi quickly closed the tab as Isabel looked over his shoulder. “Nothing, just looking at tickets,” he said. He went back to their ticketing application, opened a few more tickets and decided to table the research until later that evening.
***
The deep, dark internet.
With his own personal wifi and his own VPN, Levi had more wriggle room to dig deeper.
There was a mention of a fight, a marriage on the rocks, and the rumors only grew from there. The more Levi found, the more courage he mustered. It turned out, the process of scrolling through threads, joining chat groups had been nothing but liberating.
Liberating but infuriating.
The internet was an aggregate of bad takes and the occasional good one. From bad takes came horrible half baked rumors.
I swear, if they end up divorcing…
Jaeger should have dumped her fucking ass from the start.
Slut…
Whore…
Hange Zoe. Fucking gold digger.
There were rumors that she had manipulated Zeke for the money. Rumors that she had only married him to complete her PhD.
Levi quickly went through those.
Some of the people were nice though and Levi read those comments a little more slowly.
The mood alarm was Zoe’s deal.
The money Jaeger put into was a donation.
If they’re not happy, let them divorce.
And there were videos, particularly zoomed videos in events of Zeke and Hange in conventions and conferences, the latest one only a few months ago. Before Hange had visited the hospital.
In the most recent one, they were talking, just at the corner behind the stage, still visible from the camera. Levi rewinded the video again and again just to confirm their identity.
The Hange on the screen seemed indignant. Zeke had pulled her in by the waist, she pulled away. In response, Zeke had once again gone for her hands, pulling her towards him.
Just like back in the school gym.
It was different, that time in the gym Hange had been accepted yet determined at the same time. The Hange on the video, or the least, the one he could make out from the flailing of her hands, the stamping of her food on the ground, the moment she had pulled away then turned away was telling.
Hange wasn’t accepting anything anymore.
Levi scrolled through the comments.
If Hange Zoe divorces Zeke Jaeger… If she keeps possession of the mood alarm... she’s a gold digger.
She needed Jaeger funds to complete PhD… It’s Zeke Jaeger’s PhD not hers lmao XD
It was around the fifth most liked comment when Levi closed the tab, not bothering to bookmark the site. That was enough internet toxicity for the day.

“You’re transferring me?” Levi had ended up preempting the discussion.
Nifa and Moblit looked at each other, then back at him. Then Nifa nodded.
Moblit shook his head, creating some confusion. “No, we wanted your opinion on this first. The city we’ll be transferring you to isn’t very… convenient.”
“But you will be paid more,” Nifa said.
Since no one actually wants to live there. A fact no one actually admitted during those types of meetings but Levi had been in corporate long enough to know.
“And it’s just for a few years,” Moblit said, his tone, a tone of reassurance more than actual confidence. “Our hospital got special permission to do testing and research and we’ll need one support guy there. This is an important project for our hospital so...”
Levi had done a quick google search of the city under the table, a name he never heard of, and just the picture of a very sleepy town with not many buildings with even two floors was indicative. There was a reason why Moblit and Nifa seemed uncertain about a transfer.
There wasn’t much he did anyway in that city. How could moving away be any different?
“What’s this research about?” Levi asked.
Moblit responded to that more clearly and more confidently. “We’re planning to do further research, create programs for kids who grew up in difficult households to help them process emotions better. We’re starting with a few kids, on a small research facility up north… And having someone on call would be helpful.”
It didn’t take much to convince Levi after that. “There isn’t much for me to miss here anyway.” Really, he would have taken that transfer even without the pay raise.
***
There was peace and quiet which came with living in the middle of nowhere. Peace and quiet had a way of making Levi unbearably bored yet at the same time more perceptive as to why the hell no one wanted to live there in the first place.
Winters were cruel, with snow piling up meters high. Even in the summers, the sky was overcast and in all four seasons, the air still found a way to be suffocatingly dry.
Someone mentioned something about lake effects and something about rain shadows, and Levi couldn’t really tell which one was it. He wasn’t a scientist after all.
He was human though, a very simple minded human with no science degree. So he let the weather affect his moods, maybe even affect his long term philosophies in life. His current environment was too different from the bustling city he grew up in, or the other urban jungle he had lived the past five years of his life, he deemed his new home, the epitome of the middle of nowhere.
It was completely unfamiliar and by some psychological consequence to Levi, it was too far flung from his old life for Levi to even entertain anything about his old life, beyond work. So it became easier to take a more pragmatic approach at reminiscing.
A few months into his transfer, he had even started reading articles on Zeke and Hange again.
Billionaire Zeke Jaeger finalizes divorce would Mood Alarm founder Hange Zoe.
Then the comments section:
That was fast.
I knew it, Zoe’s a gold digger.
There was the string of names, whore, sluts, cheaters and gold diggers that never made too much sense as sentences. So Levi quickly closed the tab.
You actually did it. He thought to himself. And when he thought a little longer about it, he realized he did feel happy for her.
Happy? Sad? Disappointed? Out of curiosity, he opened his own mood alarm and clicked activate. It glowed with a bright green.
He could have been happier.
Levi decided to blame the sky for his fickle mood. That grey view that stretched far unimpeded by any of the surrounding low rising buildings, only ending by the mountains that seemed hundreds of miles away.
The surrounding mountains and the large lake followed him to work. An overly scenic landscape that reminded him, the train back to the capital only came once a day, the train that passed through the next major city only passed three times a day.
And fucking hell, train tickets were expensive.
By some modern day definition, Levi really was trapped in the middle of nowhere.
The weather only made him more cynical, yet angrier at the tasteless comments under the news article on Zeke and Hange’s divorce. As he neared the research center, he ended up tabling that reflection with one sentence, something comforting yet oddly depressing.
Hange wouldn’t look for me. Then he brushed it away violently soon after. The audacity of even considering the prospect that he was important enough for her to want to search for him. Why would Hange care where he is?
The fact that Hange was followed by the press while he was trapped in the middle of nowhere was indicative enough. They were from two completely different worlds.

It may have taken months more, but what Levi clocked to a ‘bout of wanderlust’ eventually settled. He found, keeping himself busy with the right work had done wonders to placate the turmoil inside him.
Keeping busy somehow made it easier to sit up and get ready for work. It meant managing to desensitize his own moods to the weather around him.
Most importantly, it meant seeing some connection with the world, some sliver of motivation to go the extra mile with the people who worked with.
“Early as always, Ackerman.” Same greeting everyday.
“Morning to you too, Onyankopon,” Levi responded as he entered the irsmall office.
Onyankopon was a companion duringearly in the mornings, lunch times, late afternoons and sometimes, even the dinners when he would invite Levi out for a drink in the only bar for miles around.
Still, it made life remotely eventful when the only changing things had been the weather and his work.
And his work was very eventful.
“Uncle Levi! Did you find any bugs yesterday?” Just like every other morning, the two kids would burst through the door. Or more specifically, the brunette was always the one bursting through the door, the blonde just followed.
“Gaby, you might be bothering them,” Falco said. He said that at least three times a week.
Levi had never been the type anyway to tell them he didn’t mind their morning visits. It always meant something to look forward to.
“Nothing so far,” Levi said. He looked towards Onyakopon, the one in charge of reporting issues. “Hopefully.”
Onyankopon raised his hands in defense. “Don’t get mad at me, get mad at the devs who created the mood alarm in the first place."
Levi was constantly mad at the devs anyway, if he considered that constant state of self loathing. Working on the mood alarm as support had only made Levi realize how many shortcuts he had taken into making that damn application years ago.
“There’s nothing today,” Levi said as he looked at the two kids. “But I could give you a quick lesson,” he added. He couldn’t say no to the crestfallen faces of the two kids.
He dragged one seat next to him and guided Gaby to one of them and Falco to his own seat. “When I want to look for errors in the code, I look here first.” It was a terribly boring lesson, a useless one. Support 101. At the least, the kids seemed satisfied. “If I right click here, and then inspect, I can see what this website is made out of.”
Gaby let out a breath, a mix between a ‘wow’ and an ‘oh.’ “I can’t read it.”
“It’s another language,” Levi explained. “Computers don’t understand our language. So we have to learn another language to be able to talk to them. And when we’re able to tell them what we want, they’ll do things for us, things we can’t do ourselves.”
Gaby had asked more questions after that. Falco had asked his own too, albeit hesitantly.
The difference between the network and console tabs, the meanings of the strange brackets, what happens if they just aimlessly click…
That morning session ended with less than half the questions answered, and a promise to teach them more the next morning. Like every other day before, at eight in the morning, Onyankopon brought them to the activity room and Levi was left alone in the office.
There weren’t many people in the research center, only five employees in total. After all, there were only ten to twenty kids who came and went every day, a very manageable number for five people. He and Onyankopon shared an office and with Onyankopon busy a good chunk of the day, Levi was left alone.
With his own efficient working methods and his outstanding ability to quickly pick out the bugs, Levi was usually free for a cumulated five hours a day.
When he first started working there, his five hour long breaks consisted of reading novels or whatever stupid article came up on his timeline. He could have taken longer breaks yet chose to spend them as short sporadic bouts of inactivity
By spreading out periods of inactivity, Levi managed to somehow pacify the guilt at ‘doing nothing’ while being paid for the eight hours a day. There were times, it was strong, remnants maybe of his stint with the love alarm, barely taking leaves, willingly putting him through the pain of overtime.
Some days, they were particularly strong, sometimes incomprehensible that Levi suspected they could have been related to the burning curiosity, the burning attachment to his own application that never abated.
A burning attachment, a natural need to be productive eventually resulted in sporadic bouts of unproductivity spent just testing the mood alarm all for a brief look into his own emotions.
Even when he wasn’t feeling anything in particular, the application continued to glow colors, just flitting between greens and blues. They could have been yellows or oranges maybe, when Onyankopon or Gabi or Falco visited. He had never been the type to wear his heart on his sleeve though and thus, had never opened it with them around.
That day wasn’t any different. Alone in the office, he opened it again, held it in his hands and watched the colored blobs swim amongst each other, mix amongst one another, then disappear.
Blue or Green? That day it was blue. Why blue and why not green? He could never ask. ‘How’ was always an easier question to answer. He only had to connect his phone to the PC then boot up the dashboard.
His next break, he decided to try a visualization exercise, like every other time before.
Memories never seemed to do the trick. He’d take a risk and dive deep, into his memories with Hange, his anger at the situation, the loss of a life before. Yet it all came out greens and blues. The alarm rang, an almost deafening sound in the silent room and for a split second, it had Levi attentive and a little paranoid. Levi knew though, with the thick concrete walls around him, it was a sound just for him.
He connected his phone to the dashboard and booted the PC again.
There were numbers. He switched to a bar graph view, noting how there were terms, hormones and chemicals he could only barely make sense of. But the blue and the green bars higher than usual yet still very low were signs in themselves.
That morning was a normal morning. And every morning since he built that habit had been a normal morning.
The only thing which ended up different about that day was when footsteps sounded just outside the door. If Levi had been listening closely, he would have been able to point out, those weren't a rhythm of footsteps he was particularly privy too.
But normal mornings tended to desensitize people. Footsteps weren’t particularly interesting either.
In a town with only a few hundred people, it would most likely be someone who already lived there. He continued to work. He disconnected his phone from the dashboard and played with the mood alarm in his own phone again.
The door clicked open behind him, slowly enough for the creak to sound, then fast enough for the slam to come right after yet gently.
Onyankopon always opened the door a little wider, always slamming the door behind him and in between, there was always a greeting. If Levi had been more aware of his surroundings, maybe the lack of all that could have peaked his interest.
In the grand scheme of things though, the door slamming wasn’t anything particularly interesting. Levi continued to sit and stare at his phone.
“Levi Ackerman.”
A voice in an empty room though, was always an interesting thing. By some natural inclination towards voices, any presence in a room that was always his by mid morning, Levi was listening.
Making sense of the voice was a surprisingly slow process. The mood alarm reacted first.
The alarm sounded.
A wave climbed from his chest up until his neck, there was a bristle at the back of his neck, a tickle at his ears, then something pricked at his eyes. He looked down at the alarm before he could completely understand. The colors continued to swim then mix.
They always disappeared and finalized the reading in five seconds.
A second or two passed, and the colors still didn’t look at all in a hurry to disappear.
You’re going crazy Levi. He took a deep breath. He was dreaming. Because what the fuck. Of course she wouldn’t be here. She had an international company to run.
“Levi…” The voice sang. “That’s you right?”
Don’t look back.
“Or maybe there are just a lot of developers named Levi in this world… “ The footsteps were only getting closer. “Developers who are just really good at using the mood alarm.” Then the voice was right next to him.
When she had settled on that seat right at his peripherals, he couldn’t exactly chalk it up to a fevered dream. The mood alarm in his hands continued to ring. He could have sworn at least five seconds had passed. Yet the colors never disappeared, countless colors still swimming around on the interface as the mood alarm continued to read his emotions.
Levi had never been a master of articulation. The war of colors, the chaos on the phone were the best visual representation. He struggled to find the right words, but she continued to stare from his peripherals, her face many things at once.
Apologetic? Expectant?
“It is you,” she said, triumph and relief apparent in her tone.
That only pissed Levi off more. Another emotion added to his boiling pot. Eventually Levi thought it necessary to respond. With too little time, too little mindspace to even attempt to articulate, Levi kept himself to three words, the only three which could have meant everything at once.
“What the fuck.”
In response, she let out a soft laugh. “Are you crying?”
Crying? Now that Levi did think about it, there had been a crack in her voice too. Levi looked up to see her, smiling. Her eyes were smiling too. Then he followed the tear streak that barely grazed the side of her lip.
There was enough time, enough silence for Levi to gather himself. To stare at the reading on the application that couldn’t seem to decide what emotion Levi was feeling.
With enough self discipline, enough concentration, Levi managed to speak. “Hange, if you ask people why they’re crying, you’re just gonna make it worse.”
***
There was only one tea shop in the town, a tea shop which naturally, Levi had chosen as his favorite hang out spot.
Over the months, he had grown familiar with it and in turn, it had grown to become an intimate friend. An intimate friend he had never expected to ever introduce to Hange.
Onyankopon and Moblit had joined them for tea though, and suddenly, Hange didn’t feel like Hange. It could have been the way she shifted to an ‘all business’ demeanor or maybe a part of him was still trying to rationalize what he had deemed to be a very irrational thought.
Maybe he had imagined visiting the cafe with Hange a few times. The realist inside him though, had always believed it to be impossible. At that moment, the dreamer inside him was still taking its victory lap.
“You should have told us you’d be coming. We could have set up something better than late afternoon tea,” Onyankopon said. Either way, he seemed very happy to see them.
Moblit took a sip from his cup then revealed an apologetic smile underneath as he put the cup down. “Apologies for visiting all of a sudden. Doctor Zoe is a very impulsive person.”
Hange nodded. “I hope you don’t mind. As soon as I heard about this, I hopped on the next plane just to get here as soon as possible,” she said “I’m hoping to start something like this in the hospitals back home.”
Moblit put his cup down. “Right, I never got to properly introduce you to Levi.” He turned to Onyankopon then to Levi. “But I’m sure you’ve had a fair share of introductions… You did barge into his office this morning.” He had an apologetic look on his face.
“Hey, Doctor Zoe just wanted to see how we were using the software,” Onyankopon said in Hange’s defense. “I’m more than honored to see that the founder of the mood alarm is taking the time to even wander around our facility.”
Moblit cleared his throat. “Anyway, Levi, this is Doctor Hange Zoe, the founder of the mood alarm application. She visited our main hospital a year back but if I remember correctly, you were on leave right?”
“On a personal leave,” Levi clarified. He couldn’t find much else to say. He took a long sip of tea.
“This is Levi Ackerman,” Moblit said. “One of our best in IT support. He learned how to use your application pretty fast.”
“Yes…” Hange said. “And ever since you told me about him, I’ve been very excited to meet him.” Her grin only got wider as she studied his features, her eyes giving him a good once over. “I guess that’s the reason I ended up taking my own tour of the center while you too were catching up. I wanted to see your genius IT support in action,” she joked.
It was almost unbelievable that that morning, Hange had showed a completely different side to him. She had wiped her own tears pretty fast, shifting her expression to something very professional as soon as Onyankopon and Moblit had entered the office just that morning.
The whole afternoon, Hange was busy with activities and tours of the town, Levi busy with his own work. They barely got to talk. Fortunately, that had allowed Levi time to compose himself, enough to keep a straight face when Onyankopon had invited them over for some tea.
Then and there, there were conversations of partnerships and business, almost reminiscent to whatever bullshit he had to deal with in his old company. But this conversation had Hange, and Hange had shifted her gaze towards him enough times for Levi to feel it only proper to reciprocate.
“Once this project is over, would you consider letting Levi go?” Hange asked. “I’d love to have him visit our main office, maybe help out with some of our development work.”
Moblit shook his head vigorously. “No hesitation. It always felt like he was overqualified for this type of job.”
“By the way you talk about him, I can tell.” She looked at Levi knowingly, a silent form of communication just between both of them. She turned back to Moblit then Onyankopon, her face once again all business. “There are many things I hope to still improve with this application so any support on research, troubleshooting, development is very much appreciated.”
“What do you suggest?” Moblit asked.
A quick glance at Onyankopon and Levi knew he was asking the same question.
Hange put one finger to her chin in thought “A partnership…”
It looked like they had expected Hange to talk Levi’s ear off non stop about the application. Moblit had mentioned something about going straight home while Hange discussed the partnership with Levi, mentioning bugs, the debugger that had been stuck in the system and the bugs which Levi had been quick to point out.
Levi, being respectful, had only listened.
That was until Onyankopon and Moblit offered to walk ahead, leaving Levi and Hange alone on the red brick road overlooking the large lake.
It was early in the evening but it still felt like late afternoon. The sun never set until seven or eight during the mid months of spring.
Yet, the streets was empty, bereft of anything but the both of them.
With one quick scan of their surroundings, Hange turned back to him, she bit her lip and took a deep breath.
Her demeanor was suddenly a stark contrast with the enthusiastic, eloquent one back at a cafe. The sudden transformation was enough for Levi to tense up,
Hange spoke up. “This town really sleeps early,” she commented. “You're planning on going home now too?”
“I usually go home an hour earlier, especially on weekdays,” Levi responded. “I’m only out at this time because they invited me for late afternoon tea.” Technically it was dinner.
“Do you go home….” Hange started, she paused for a second, a very out-of-place pause. “To anyone?”
It took a lot of effort for Levi to resist choking or even letting out a ghost of a laugh at that question. I’m married to my job. That was the answer that popped into his mind out of instinct.
“Did I make it time?” Hange added a second later, only reminding Levi that he hadn’t even mustered a glimmer of answer.
“Make it in time?” Levi asked, in an attempt to stall for time.
“Petra…”
“She married Oluo.”
Hange didn’t seem satisfied. “Is there someone else…” she pressed. “Someone else...”
Hange started to speak with her hands, gesturing for Levi to ‘go on,’ in some awkward wave of a hand. The first awkward gesture Hange had done since they arrived.
Levi couldn’t help but just appreciate that bout of vulnerability he could pull out of her. “There is,” he said.
Just for a second, Hange’s face fell and for a moment Levi relished it.
“Oh…” Hange turned away. “Then, I should take you home… I’d love to meet her…”
Then suddenly, Levi felt just a little bad for that trick. “I was fucking kidding,” he said.
Hange let out a loud sigh of relief, an ugly huff and she looked away, suddenly self conscious.
Levi had to admit, it was an ugly snort. He was tempted to take a good look at her face, and maybe he had craned his neck as she kept silent for a second longer. “I’m not some idiot who would marry someone just because it’s convenient," he said.
“Give me a break. I just graduated from college when I decided to get married,” Hange said. “Besides, we enjoyed each other’s company.”
“If you chose that type of life, I wouldn’t have stopped you. Besides, you had a lot on the line, your PhD, your mood alarm, the love alarm, your reputation. It wouldn’t have been easy choice to make.”
Hange hummed. “The PhD is done, my reputation, I don’t give too much of a rat’s ass about that. And the mood alarm? That has always been mine. I put my own money into building that business.”
“It definitely wasn’t cheap.”
“It wasn’t,” Hange admitted. “What if I told you, I earned my own capital for building it in one night in a casino.”
Levi's thoughts flew back to the night at the casino. He grinned. “I’d believe you.”
“So the mood alarm is mine and I managed to keep it,” Hange said. “But I never forgot you know... The plans, the codes, they’re all yours.”
“So you did get the email,” Levi said.
Hange nodded. “And the email got me thinking…” she trailed off for what seemed like an eternity.
Levi couldn’t wait. “About what?”
Hange thought for a few seconds longer, putting her hands behind her back. “That ended up one reason why I even considered leaving Zeke,” she said. “He has a different way of loving, I have a different one too. Love is freedom. Love is just trusting. Zeke on the other hand, always likes to play safe, tie people down.”
“What happened to ‘love is a choice?’”
Hange seemed unperturbed. “Love still is a choice.”
“Then why not choose to love Zeke?” Levi challenged.
Hange sighed and put one hand up. “You said it yourself, deciding to leave wouldn’t be an easy decision,” she started. “I considered three things.”
She put one finger up. “Our own views of love. Zeke sees it as a game, as an investment and he approaches it conservatively… On the other hand, I see love and relationships as a form of freedom, a risk. In love, I don't believe in playing to win.”
She put another finger up. “I considered how I was feeling, this really weird feeling, my thoughts on Pemberley then on colors.”
“I thought you didn’t want to be a slave to your emotions.”
Hange shook her head. “I’m not. I approached this methodically. Even before considering my feelings, I considered my circumstances.” She put the third finger up. “I considered the backlash, I considered Zeke’s feelings, dealing with a divorce. And that’s what brought me here, despite the criticism, despite my inability to buy the love alarm and to barely salvage the mood alarm.”
“You still gave in to your emotions.”
Hange nodded. “After thinking long and hard about it, I did. But before that, I weighed all three, and I decided to take the risk.”
“Was it worth it?”
Hange shrugged and she leaned over the rail, seeming mesmerized by the lake. “I won’t know yet but I guess, even when I thought you had someone else…” There was a flash of hurt on her face, enough for Levi to regret playing that little joke on her.
“I don’t have anyone else,” Levi clarified.
Hange continued to speak. “I still thought the risk was worth taking. It would have been unfair to Zeke if I stayed and who am I to stop you if someone makes you feel happy.” She turned back to him. “This is the way I’ll choose to love. I’ll weigh my emotions, my circumstances and my worst case scenarios. Then I decide the most loving thing to do. If I have to take a risk, I take it. And I guess, given all that, looking for you seemed like the correct decision.”
Levi couldn’t stifle that smile any longer, and he hoped somehow, his own words would stop it from getting any wider. “Well, it's too early to tell if it's a good decision.”
Hange opened her phone and opened the application. “Can we try again?”
“You wanna use the love alarm?” Levi asked. “Your ex-husband’s application.”
“It’s still your brainchild,” Hange said as she waited for it to load. She hovered her thumb over it.
“I don’t have it installed,” Levi said.
“I can wait,” Hange said. And there was no room for argument in her voice.
An awkward few minutes as Hange watched him download the application. Levi focused on the loading bar, and luckily, his biometrics were still registered from that brief experiment of a year ago.
“On three…” Hange said, her voice a little stilted.
But they didn’t finish counting or maybe they just counted at completely different paces.
The alarms rang, filling the empty space between them, two rings which never seemed to find a uniform pace. Even with a very dominant fastidious side though, Levi wasn’t thinking too much about such a small detail.
Hange’s was smiling, grinning, or whatever that was called. Her face was a mix between pure ecstasy and pure passion. She wrinkled her eyes at him, her mouth climbed into a grin wider than he had ever been used to.
She let out a loud sigh. “I was fucking scared.”
“Scared of what?”
“That you would have gotten over me… I dunno, thought you might just think love was a choice, and I dunno, stop feeling whatever that love alarm thing was feeling.”
“I don’t think the love alarm works like that,” Levi said. Really, he started to realize he didn’t know how it worked.
Hange shook her head. “I’m probably just overthinking. You know… I learned how to code over the years, talked to a few developers and tried to look into how the application works,” she said.
“Did you find anything?”
“Remember when you told me that the love alarm starts to figure out for its own what love is. It creates its own definition. Something we can’t even comprehend...” Hange was still grinning, her voice coming out as breaths and sometimes sounds.
Still, Levi could comprehend most of it. “You have any theories?” he pressed. Hange always had theories.
“Soulmates? Relationships in a past life?” Hange suggested.
“Well, we can’t really look back at those right?” Levi said. “Well, what else?”
One word, one word out of Hange’s mouth. “Pemberley.”
“Pemberley?” Levi asked. Somehow though as Hange looked back at the lake, up at the sky then at the gaudy main street of that small town. Levi started to understand it himself.
“It’s ugly here,” Levi said. At first he had meant it. As Hange started to look at her surroundings then back at the lake, with a look of wonder in her eyes, Levi was sure he had meant it as a challenge.
“When you’re in love then with the person we love, everywhere starts to feel like Pemberley,” Hange completed a second later.
Does it? And he wondered why the hell, he needed Hange to point it out.
They were in an ugly town, a place people were paid to live in. The sky was constantly overcast. When it wasn’t raining, it was snowing and it snowed six months a year. When it wasn’t snowing or raining, the sky was at least threatening it.
The way that Hange had looked at it with such naive wonder, the way she had just stood there, looking at everything and back at him, Levi couldn’t help but entertain the idea of Pemberley.
Maybe give the colors a chance to show themselves? Hange didn’t say it out loud. In the moment they made eye contact though, Levi couldn’t help but just give that little piece of advice a chance, whether it had been his own or Hange’s.
He looked first at the main road and the red brick path, noting how the gaudy red, worn by the elements more than actual foot traffic seemed to still glow a bright red despite the grey undertones. He then looked to the buildings, varying shades of concrete grey yet ‘the varying shades’ of it seemed to still have some sense of novelty.
He then looked back at the ocean, the dark sky above never allowed it a more beautiful shade of blue, yet the bluish black still continued to glow. The waves only sent glimmers of silver against the dark blue. Then it was only natural that he looked up at the sky, the sky which never allowed any other shade for itself, except on a few select days a year.
The fog blocked whatever green the mountains beyond the lake would have shown him.
Looking back at Hange then back at his surroundings, he started to accept it. There were greens, reds, blues, yellows and every other color in the spectrum. The world glowed with so many colors, so many lights and sounds. His emotions were a whirlwind that spun to whatever rhythm the lights and colors blinked at.
Colors persevered and they’ve always persevered.
Emotions persevered and they’ve always persevered.
Even emotions we don’t understand ourselves. Levi added to himself.
Maybe Hange was right. That was what the love alarm had been trying to show. The one person who made the colors, the emotions all the clearer.
“This is a beautiful place,” Hange said. “And I wouldn’t mind staying here, lay low a bit, just long enough for people to forget the divorce fiasco.”
“There are a few nice places here,” Levi said.
Hange continued to stare.
Why don’t we just live here together right Levi?
I know you, you wouldn’t be able to stay out of the action.
Levi felt almost ashamed at that mystery response that seemed to pop into his head out of nowhere. We can live here long enough to get our shit together. "First things first, let’s discuss this partnership, over tea in my house.”
“Now?” Hange’s widened her eyes. And her eyes were smiling.
“Well, unless you have other plans tonight,” Levi said.
Hange shook her head. “Nothing much…”
They made the whole way back to his home in silence. Surprisingly, Levi preferred it that way. It had been enough for him to appreciate his new comprehension of his surroundings, the small details he hadn't noticed before.
It wasn’t just the view. The rhythm of their footsteps, their uncoordinated breathing, and just the way the trees rustled, the wind blew, always found a way to glow different colors. His emotions, the chaos of every moment after that were also challenging him to find their colors.
And the circumstances that had them locked in his cramped apartment, sitting over tea, with no one else watching, nothing restricting them had Levi reflecting. It probably had Hange reflecting too. They spoke unhindered with just thoughts, expressions and locked gazes.
For one reason or the other, it happened quickly and abruptly, leaving no space or time to comprehend it.
Sitting on his living room sofa right next to her. Hands clasped against the other. Her dry lips were on his.
The magic welling in his chest, the thunder that climbed quickly up his throat, persevering even underneath the grey. They were all screaming at him then, they all glowed colors.
At that moment though, he had been to tired to reflect on it for any longer. He decided to just roll with it.
It was no use making sense of it. After all, life, love and emotions... They were all just complicated that way.

Author - @petalstofish
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this! You can find her on ao3!
1. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
I will save dialogue that I come up with, or prompts, or even just snippets of a scene in a Google doc if I don’t use it right away, and for it into another story later.
2. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
Formatting is a bitch.
3. Do you have any suggestions to help others become a better writer? If so, what are they?
I always tell people to write what they want to read, always be open to constructive feedback, and just have FUN. If you want to write a fic about a stupid hufflepuff vegan cupcake than do it. You might think no one wants to read it, but you’re wrong. I promise. Someone out there is thinking about what you’re writing.
4. What do you think makes a good story?
A healthy dose of humor, angst, and love!
5. What is the first book that made you cry?
Tuck Everlasting, I think, but also coulda been Holes. Both of them are my childhood favs tho!
6. Does writing energize or exhaust you?
It unfortunately fuels me. I’m writing this at 2am, after I just spent six straight hours writing Evermore. And I’m still not tired. I’m gonna end up crashing around 4am at this point. Thanks endorphins.
7. Have you ever gotten reader’s block? If so, what are your tips to overcome it?
Is this suppose to be writers block? If so, I usually take a walk. If it’s readers block, I’m not sure what that entirely means but if I can’t read a book, I normally put it down haha
8. Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?
This is a hard question for me to answer. Technically anyone can write. I think it’s what you’re writing about…like I can write a 600 page novel about two idiots falling in love, but I could never write a 600 page novel about true crime. If you don’t feel a lot of the time it might be harder for you to grasp emotions and place them into characters BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN YOU CANT WRITE. You would literally just be writing as you personally see the world and interact with it.
9. If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
Don’t DELETE YOUR FICS BECAUSE YOU DEEMED THEM TOO SHITTY. One day you’re going to be 30 years old and still bitter that you don’t still have a copy of the fic where you made Lily go back in time and be a stand in for Queen Elizabeth because Voldemort was trying to kill the queen for the sorcerers stone. STILL BITTER.
10. What was your hardest scene to write?
Every scene of my Anastasia AU. Jk.There’s a death scene in Waterlogged that was really hard for me to write. I also HATE writing Fade. But I also love Fade? I have a very complicated relationship with her because she was supposed to only be a one shot.
11. What is your favorite childhood book?
It’s a three way tie between Holes, Tuck Everlasting, and Narnia
12. How long on average does it take you to write a one shot or a chapter of a fic?
I can typically knock out a one shot in an hour or two. A chapter can take me anywhere from five to six hours. A book or multi chapter Fic typically takes me about 8 months.
13. A fic that inspires you?
Ugh, hands down Wind and Waves. My first ever fanfic I ever read and reviews religiously. Will love that one until my dying day.
14. How do you edit your work?
LMAFO (I don’t)
15. Where does inspiration come from?
Little things here and there. The way a person stands in line at the grocery store carrying flowers and half off chocolates. Hearing conversations around me. Going out with my friends and laughing about everything and nothing. If I’m ever stuck writing, I just go do something, and normally that triggers some part of my writing brain to be like “what if James was wearing suspenders, but Lily couldn’t stay to snog the living daylights outta him because she got magically velcro’d to a fourth year?” And then I’m normally like “damn brain, I should pay you for this”
16. Who has been helpful for you as you write for the fandom?
SO MANY PEOPLE. @hiddenpolkadots was my first real friend back then! And she really gave me the confidence I needed! Levins gave me my first ever prompt! Melina was my constant cheerleader from day. And @gryffindormischief is my writing soulmate. I write my best when I write with her.
17. What is your fav POV to write from?
Lily!
18. What is a fic you would love to write but are worried you won’t be able to accomplish it/nervous it wouldn’t work out?
Not nervous it wouldn’t work out, but I know I don’t have time to write the entire Fade universe into being.
19. Do you ever self insert in fics?
Nope, I do love to insert you all into them though haha
20. What is the story you are proudest of?
I love Waterlogged as my own and I’m really excited for it to be published on Christmas Day. My favorite jily fic that I’ve ever written is fearlessly red!
21. Do you prefer writing canon jily or muggle au?
I LOVE BOTH but lean to muggle a lot
22. what is your creative process?
Me: *triggered by something/someone/movie/song/life event*
Me five seconds later: *types nonsensical notes into my Google docs before the idea leaves me completely*
Me later: *warps my frantic idea paragraphs into a solid outline*
Me even later: *fills in blanks, checks it over once, then posts it all over the Internet*
Thank you!

📋2022 Simming Goals🙄😊
I've seen a few of my fellow simmers doing this and I thought I'd give it a go!
Finish writing the Campbell Quay Masterpost. I started this on the 18th Dec and I've been doing a bit each night and I'm over 13,000 words (!) and I'm not even halfway through Round 3 yet! I wanted to have it ready by the time the 1000 post came out but sadly, I'm not there yet!
Complete the first year of Campbell Quay. This should be an easy one to do given how quickly I churn out posts! But there might be day when I don't feel like it, so keeping it reasonable here before...
Complete the second year of Campbell Quay! Which would be (obviously) Summer / Autumn / Winter / Spring which would be four rounds and it's taken me just over 6 months to do 3 and a half! 🤣🙈
Get better with photo editing. I'm not an expert with the photo editing and usually it's just to crop out the action queue and the version number (as I always play with testingcheats enabled). But I like the idea of getting a little bit more professional with it. I can just about handle using GIMP for doing some basic photo frames...I won't hold my breath on this one!
Get more comfortable with using pose boxes (eg Group Photos). It took me blooming ages to get that group photoshoot as my game decided to crash on me about five times before I got it completed! But it was very satisfying to see the end result and to see all the likes you all gave it! I have so many poses boxes and I don't know what most of the poses are!
Keep writing and keep loving it! It's as simple as it sounds - I love that this story is making me write as it is still the longest writing commitment I've kept! I'm not burnt out or have suffered writer's block (thankfully!) yet but I hope it keep it at bay by maybe not posting as many posts each day. But we'll see how I feel about it first.
Keep supporting my fellow supporters! If you or any other simmer you know/heard of has written a story or series, please tag me in it or send it into my ask box. I have a whole page of my blog dedicated to my Rurple Recomend(dation)s and I intent to keep reblogging other people's hard work so they get the credit they deserve!
Try to not get so much custom content this year Jess! Fighting a loosing battle with that one! 🤣 At the very least, as I'm writing a story I try to recycle clothing cc. Eg if Ros wears an outfit, I try not to make her wear it again and therefore chuck it out of my Downloads folder. That massive stretch where I deleted over 3GB of CC was painful and I really don't want to go through that again!

This is the man who saved Louis’ life.
For one second, Louis fears Harry won’t recognise him, but his eyes widen when he turns to his left and they meet Louis’. He takes a step forward, reaching for him with a shaky hand before stopping himself.

To Harry, Louis was becoming as tangible and essential as music in his life. He still was a mystery but at the same time, he was one of the most real things Harry had. He just hoped he could live up to the image Louis probably had in his mind of him.
He could play the part, after all, what was published of him wasn’t as detached from reality. He didn’t think of himself as a rockstar cliche, although he couldn't deny he did sleep around, partied a lot, and did some drugs. But then again, wasn’t that what the majority of his friends back in his hometown were doing at college?
Harry wanted to impress Louis, he didn’t want to disappoint or leave his expectations unfulfilled, so he’d give him the full rockstar experience.

somewhere in between lightning / 99647 words
A summer gone wrong (or very right) when, under Liam’s persuasion, Louis finds himself drunkenly applying for Love Island, and getting accepted. Oh, well. A summer spent on an island paradise couldn’t be all that bad, right?
Imagine his surprise when Louis arrives in sunny Majorca to find that his first love and ex-boyfriend, Harry, is another contestant, about to capture the hearts of everyone in the villa.
