Hiragana and Katakana / ひらがな、カタカナ
There are 3 types of characters in Japanese - Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.
Hiragana(ひらがな) is the easiest to read, and every sentence can be written in it, just like alphabet in English, even if we don't know correct Kanji.
Katakana(カタカナ) is another version of Hiragana, used for the words from foreign countries. For example, we write "ケーキ"(from "cake" in English) or "パン"(from "pão" in Portuguese, which means "bread" in English) as both didn't originally exist in Japan.
Kanji was brought from China, of course, and were developed as Japanese characters. Each Kanji has each meaning, so it makes us easier to understand what it exactly means. For example, when we see "いし", we don't know what it means because we have many words of the same sound ;石(stone), 意思(intention), 医師(doctor), etc.
Japanese sentences are made up of a mixture of these three types of characters.
Hereunder you can see the list of Hiragana and Katakana.
基本ひらがな(Basic Hiragana)

Review @ Bad Alchemy Magazine ( Germany )
Mit Schwitters („Merzbauten“), Baudrillard („Simulacra“), Debord („Dérive“, „Musica Psychogeographica“), Virilio („This Dromocracy“), R.A. Wilson („Discordia“, „Musica Eristica“), Thierry Hentsch („Mpire of Desire“), Thomas Frank („Commodify Your Dissent“), W. G. Sebald ('After Nature') als Stichwortgebern. Mit verneinten und dennoch angeeigneten Begriffen – ThisContinuum, Thisillusion, Thisquietude, Endotica, Thisowned, Etopia, Thiscordiana, Thisruption, Thisequilibrium... Die Sexploitation geschwärzt. Aus Dis- (miss-, nicht-, zer-, un-) wird This, aus Eskapismus wird Fluchthilfe aus den Ketten der „Buyology“ und der 'Tyranny of the Moment' ins 'Edgeland', in die 'Peripheria', die Einsamkeit, Thisneys „Mondo Lostalgico“. Who walks alone in the streets at night? The sad, the mad, the bad. The lost, the lonely. The sleepless, the homeless. All the citys internal exiles. The night has always been the time for daylight’s dispossessed – the dissident, the different. Hier mit einer Sammlung verstreuter Hauntologismen, die als 'Atmosphera', 'Temporality', 'Lamento', 'Surrender', 'Darkspace', 'Summer Nightfall', 'Disengage' schon ihr Spätgeborensein, ihre Leeseitigkeit andeuten. Und ausgießen in klimpernder Tristesse, dröhnendem Moll und manchmal dazu raunenden Stimmen, kaskadierend platzenden Bläschen oder müdem Kontrabasspizzicato. Aber: 'You decide the end of the story'. Quick Mini overview
Mini is a constructed language created by S.C. Gruget. It has 1000 words and a simple but useful grammar. Mini’s sentences are structured in the subject, verb, object manner:
mi i manja a poma - I eat an apple.
Given that words can function like any other words (that is, a verb also works as noun, for example), Mini uses particles to mark the role of a word in a sentence:
i: introduces the verb.
a: introduces direct object & noun complement.
e: introduces adjective complement.
So:
mi i manja a manja - I eat food.
tu e rapi - You are fast.
It uses the letters a, b, d, e, f, g, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v. Pronunciation of consonants is the same as in English, vowels sound a bit more like in Spanish. Stress of a word always falls on the second to last syllable.
“a” as in map.
“e” as in level.
“i” as in meet.
“o” as in more.
“u” as in balloon.
“g” as gift.
Tense and verb aspect is unspecified, but if needed it is built in combination with the i particle and another word:
mi i de manja a oranje - I ate an orange.
mi i manja a oranje - I eat an orange.
mi i go manja a oranje - I will eat an orange.
mi i en manja a oranje - I am eating an orange.
mi i ave manja a oranje - I have eaten an orange.
mi i de ave manja a oranje - I had eaten an orange.
mi i go ave manja a oranje - I will have eaten an orange.
i manja a oranje! - Eat an orange!
go-i manja a oranje - To eat an orange.
mi i da manja a oranje - I would eat an orange.
mi i pasa manja a oranje - I used to eat oranges.
mi i debe manja a oranje - I should eat an orange.
en-i manja a oranje e bon - Eating oranges is good.
Di oranje e de-i manja de mi - This is orange is eaten by me.
For negation precede the word no to that which you need negated:
mi i de no manja a da oranje - I did not eat that orange.
For an adjective precede a noun with a word. For an adverb follow a verb with o and a word:
mi i manja o rapi a oranje poma - I eat quickly an orange apple (the apple has the colour orange).
Possessives are just pronouns and subjects used as adjectives:
tu i manja a mi poma - You eat my apple.
The conjunctions are an, u:
mi i manja a poma an oranje - I eat an apple and an orange.
mi i go manja a poma u oranje - I will eat an apple or an orange.
Dependent and subordinating clauses also have their own words to mark their role:
mi i pensa ke tu i debe manja a poma - I think that you should eat apples.
mi i manja a poma ka mi i kan - I eat apples because I can.
mi i manja a poma vile tu i manja a oranje - I eat an apple while you eat oranges.
Tamen mi i manja poma, mi i no favo a si - Although I eat apples, I don’t like them.
Simple yes or no questions just add a ?:
tu i manja a oranje? - Do you eat oranges?
Open questions use ke in a variety of ways:
tu i manja a ke? - What do you eat?
ke man i manja a oranje - Who eats oranges?
tu i manja e ke loke? - Where are you eating?
si i manja en ke tempo? - When is he eating?
tu i manja e ke rason? - Why do you eat?
mi i debe manja a ke mui? - How much should I eat?
si i manja e ke moda? - How does she eat?
Numbers work as adjectives and are composed from left to right:
nulo - 0.
uno - 1.
duo - 2.
san - 3.
fo - 4.
penta - 5.
sita - 6
seven - 7.
ba - 8.
nin - 9.
ten - 10.
ten nin poma - 19 apples.
sento - 100.
kilo - 1,000.
duo-ten-san-ranko - 23rd.
You can create new words by composing them:
di-dia - today.
dimenti-neso - forgiveness.
duo-ranko-go-fini - Second to last.

Hiragana and Katakana Part. 2
I hope everything is comming along well with your studies! Are you guys ready for part 2, because I know I am!
So lets get started.
Now that we’ve got a handling on the sounds that are the foundation of being able to speak Japanese its time to expand on that a little bit. As some of you may have noticed the letters that would make up the sounds for
D, G, P, B, J, and Z are missing. Theres just one group of sounds for us to learn after this so lets not waste any more time!
First of all take a few seconds to look at the chart above and see which characters are and aren’t included. Also look and see whats different between these characters and how they normally look.
Are you back? What did you notice?
The first thing you should’ve seen is that not all of the characters are included. It’s only the characters from the H, S, K, and T groups. The second should be the symbols on top of these letters. It's these two symbols that give us our second variety of sounds.
Those symbols are called Dakuten and Handakuten.
Dakuten
This is the quotation looking symbol that you see over the letters. Of our special letters most of them use this with the exception of one. The term for little quotations being added is usually shortened to Tenten. So if someone says you’re missing a tenten in this sense they’re probably referring to the quotation like symbol on the character.
The ones that use this are our K, S, T, and H line. So for example:
1) か Ka with the the dakuten becomes が Ga. Same with eveything else in the line.
かKa ぎGIぐGu げGe ごGo
2) さSa gets changed to ざZa. There is an exception with is (shi)し. It instead gets changed to (Ji)じ.
ざZa じJi ずZu ぜZe ぞZo
3) (Ta)た goes to (Da)だ. There are two special ones in this row, which is (chi)ち and (tsu)つ.
Chi with the dakuten is hardly used(I could be wrong), but I’ve rarely if ever come across it in this form. I cant even think of any words that use this. If you do come across it then it would be read similar to how (ji)じ. When typing it in on a keyboard you would write it as Du
As for the second one there are two ways it could be spelled out when writing it in English: (zu) or (dzu). When learning it I personally like the (dzu) one because it sounds closer to how the letter should sound, but for spelling purposes it probably looks better with the (zu) reading. When typing it on a keyboard you’d write it as Du.
だTa *ぢJi/Di *づ Zu/Dzu/Du でDe どDo
4) The last one in this list is our good friend the ‘H’ family. Now unlike the other groups, the ‘H’ family is pretty big. Of course we have the one that adds the tenten. It changes our はHa to ばBa
ばBa びBi ぶBu べBe ぼBo
This also brings us to the second symbol that changes the sound.
2. Handakuten
Luckily this symbol is only attached to one group, and that’s our ‘H’ group. Which is pretty nice since we don’t have to remember too much lol. It’s already a lot to take in. So if you see a small little circle on the letter it changes ‘H’ to ‘P’.
For example:
ぱPa ぴPi ぷPu ぺPe ぽPo
For this one, similar to how the first one had a shortened form of tenten, in this case if you forgot to write the circle on the character people might start saying maru. Maru is the Japanese word for circle.
Of course, all of this can be translated to the katakana characters too.
カキクケコ ガギグゲゴ
サシスセソ ザジズぜぞ
タチツテト ダヂヅデド
ハヒフヘホ バビブベボ パピプペポ
We still have one more set of character combinations to learn and then we can get into some sentence and basic grammar stuff! I know it’s taking a while but please bare with me lol. You can always send me asks for any sorts of questions if you’re doing self study ^^

Writing System
This is super important, before we begin with learning words and sentences.
Japanese has 3 writing systems so to speak. Two of them are syllabaries, you may refer to them as "Alphabets", and the third writing system is sort of symbol based, like Chinese.
There's also ROMAJI. Which we'll be using to help you learn sounds and to speak. But please, work on learning the syllabaries as soon as possible. Romaji is terrible for many reasons, including the fact that everyone and their mother writes Romaji in a different way. You may notice that my Romaji is different than some others you've come across. So again. Try to get away from it as soon as possible. Don't be afraid. I know you can do it!
We'll start with Kana, namely Hiragana as you'll be seeing it the most.
HIRAGANA
Hiragana is used mainly for native Japanese words. You will see Hiragana everywhere. So you'll be wanting to learn that first.
A:あ I:い U:う E:え O:お
Ka:か Ki:き Ku:く Ke:け Ko:こ
Sa:さ Shi:し Su:す Se:せ So:そ
Ta:た Chi:ち Tsu:つ Te:て To:と
Na:な Ni:に Nu:ぬ Ne:ね No:の
Ha:は Hi:ひ Fu:ふ He:へ Ho:ほ
Ma:ま Mi:み Mu:む Me:め Mo:も
Ya:や Yu:ゆ Yo:よ *yes there are only 3 of these
Ra:ら Ri:り Ru:る Re:れ Ro:ろ
Wa:わ Wo:を *yes there's only 2 of these
N:ん
Okay, now some of these characters get whats called a "Dakuten" that's a little " or ゜that's next to the Hiragana that changes it's sound. those are as follows:
Ga:が Gi:ぎ Gu:ぐ Ge:げ Go:ご
Za:ざ Ji:じ Zu:ず Ze:ぜ Zo:ぞ
Da:だ Zi:ぢ Dzu:づ De:で Do:ど
Ba:ば Bi:び Bu:ぶ Be:べ Bo:ぼ
Pa:ぱ Pi:ぴ Pu:ぷ Pe:ぺ Po:ぽ
ぱ ぴ ぷ ぺ ぽ are the only ones that use the ゜dakuten.
You'll notice that 「ぢ」sounds like "zi" ... or "dzi"... and not "di" and that 「づ」sounds like "dzu" and not "du" ... that's.... that's a pain in the butt but it is what it is. In order to get the "di" sound it's written 「でぃ」"de" and a little "i" makes "di" ... and actually you'll probably only ever see that written in Katakana 「ディ」
Which brings me to the next part. Little vowels and Little Y sounds.
We covered some of the little y sounds last lesson. You'll see more little Ys than little vowels. The biggest thing you need to remember about little Ys is that they're always stuck to an "-i" character.
You'll notice some of these don't have "y"s in the romaji reading. Don't freak. That's just how it works. And is part of the reason I don't like Romaji.
Like I said you'll also see little vowels: ぁ ぃ ぅ ぇ ぉ but like with 「ディ」"di" you'll probably only ever see them in Katakana. Here's a few anyway:
Fa:ふぁ Fi:ふぃ Fe:ふぇ Fo:ふぉ
She:しぇ Je:じぇ Che:ちぇ Ti:てぃ Di:でぃ
Finally there's little "tsu" っ this little symbol DOUBLES the next consonant!
っか = kka っさ = ssa
etc. a っ can be near any other kana it doesn't really have a restriction besides not coming before あ, い, う, え, お, or ANY of the "N"s
If you come across a double n it will be written with the lone N first 「ん」 followed by one of the Ns with a vowel next to it.
Ex: Konnichiwa = こんにちは
Like English the double consonant doesn't change the sound, it just lengthens it by a fraction (if even that).
っき = "kki" pronounced the same as "ki" って= "tte" pronounced the same as "te"
Does that make sense? :)
KATAKANA (less explanation here because it's the same rules and sounds)
Katakana is used mainly for loan words. Words borrowed from other languages. It's also used in some names.
A:ア I:イ U:ウ E:エ O:オ
Ka:カ Ki:キ Ku:ク Ke:ケ Ko:コ
Sa:サ Shi:シ Su:ス Se:セ So:ソ
Ta:タ Chi:チ Tsu:ツ Te:テ To:ト
Na:ナ Ni:ニ Nu:ヌ Ne:ネ No:ノ
Ha:ハ Hi:ヒ Fu:フ He:ヘ Ho:ホ
Ma:マ Mi:ミ Mu:ム Me:メ Mo:モ
Ya:ヤ Yu:ユ Yo:ヨ
Ra:ラ Ri:リ Ru:ル Re:レ Ro:ロ

... there are probably other possibilities I've left out, but these are all the common ones you should see. and even if that's not true I trust that you can see and understand the pattern here. :)
KANJI There's thousands of Kanji, so I'm not going to list. I will have Kanji in with the lessons, but learn them at your own pace. No worries. :) I've found that once I got to the point where I could start learning Kanji it's made reading a lot easier for me.
Sorry if this is a HELLISH ammount. Just write the syllabaries down and come back to them now and then as reference. You don't have to learn them all today, or this week, or even this month. I just want you to be familiar with them. :)

Okay, so I’ve been tagged several times in this “favorite opera lines” thing going around, and even though I’ve already done 5 of my favorites, I will go ahead and do more because why not?
So in no particular order:
...Can I just do all of Tatyana’s letter scene? please? okay.
Schchastye bilo tak vozmozhno,
Tak blizko! Tak blizko!
Happiness was once possible,
so close! So close!
-Eugene Onegin, Act III
Už je večer,
smím odbednit okeničky.
Všude tma, všude tma,
jenom měsíček bědným
lidem září a plničko,
plničko, hvězd..
Night falls;
now I can open the blinds.
Everything is dark, everything is dark,
and the poor have only the moon
and a whole legion of stars...
-Jenufa, Act II
Selig sind die Liebenden.
Die der Liebe sind,
sind nicht des Todes.
Und auferstehen werden
die dahingesunken
sind um Liebe.
Blessed are those who love.
Those who love
are not of the dead.
And those who died
for love
shall rise again.
-Das Wunder der Heliane, Act I
Le malheur, ma fille, n'est pas d'être méprisée,
mais seulement de se mépriser soi-même.
The misfortune, my daughter, is not to be held in contempt,
but only to have contempt for yourself.
-Dialogues des Carmélites, Act III
Prends cette île
qu'il est toujours en mon pouvoir
de te donner!
Un flot azuré bat ses grèves,
elle est belle, plaisante,
et c'est l'île des rêves!
Take this island
which is still in my power
to give you!
An azure wave beats at its shores;
it is beautiful, pleasant,
and it is the island of dreams!
-Don Quichotte, Act V
C'est Thaïs, l'idole fragile qui vient
pour la dernière fois s'asseoir à la table fleurie.
Demain, je ne serai pour toi plus rien qu'un nom.
This is Thaïs, the fragile idol who comes for the last time to sit at your flowered table. Tomorrow, I will be nothing more to you than a name.
-Thaïs, Act I
Ist das noch der Diwan, - auf dem sich -
dein Vater - verblutet hat? -
Is this still the sofa- on which-
your father- bled to death?
-Lulu, Act II
L'error che v'imputai...
Io... stessa... avea commesso.
The crime of which I accused you...
I...I myself...committed with him.
-Don Carlo, Act IV
“Rivolto allor Gesù al popolo assembrato
mostrò l'adultera ch'era a suoi piedi e così disse...
‘Quegli di voi che non peccò,
la prima pietra scagli.’
E la donna... la donna
perdonata s'alzò.”
Perdonata... perdonata... perdonata!
Iddio lo pronunziò.
“Then Jesus turned to the assembled people,
indicating the adulteress who was at his feet, and spoke thus:
‘Those of you who have not sinned,
throw the first stone.’
And the woman...the woman,
forgiven, arose.”
Forgiven...forgiven...she is forgiven!
God has spoken it.
-Stiffelio, Act III
Écoutez! Ces martyrs de la foi sont en prière là...et du Seigneur ils chantent les louanges...
en attendant la mort!
Vous, dans ce triste lieu,
répondez comme si vous étiez devant Dieu!
Listen! These martyrs of the faith are praying there...and they sing the praises of the Lord...while awaiting death!
You, in this place of grief,
answer as if you were before God!
-Les Huguenots, Act V
È se accusarmi il mondo vuol
pur di qualche errore,
m'accusi di pietà,
non di rigore.
And if the world wants to accuse me
of some error,
let it accuse me of mercy,
not cruelty.
-La clemenza di Tito, Act II
Ein Traum hat mir den Traum Zerstört,
Ein Traum der bittren Wirklichkeit
Den Traum der Phantasie.
Die Toten schicken solche Träume,
Wenn wir zu viel mit
Und in ihnen leben.
Wie weit darf sie es,
Ohn' uns zu entwurzeln?
A dream has dashed my dream to earth,
a dream of crude reality has killed
the dream of fantasy.
The dead send us such dreams
when we spend too much life
with and in them.
How far can we go in grief
before disaster?
-Die tote Stadt, Act III
Che un dì rinasca, io spero,
dell'aurea età l'albore;
che degli umani in core
regni fraterno amor.
I hope that one day the dawn
of the Golden Age is reborn;
that brotherly love reigns
in the heart of humanity.
-Il viaggio a Reims, Act I
Gibt es einen, der nicht trivial ist?
Is there an ending that isn’t trivial?
-Capriccio, Final Scene
Tutto nel mondo è burla.
L'uom è nato burlone,
La fede in cor gli ciurla,
Gli ciurla la ragione.
Tutti gabbati! Irride
L'un l'altro ogni mortal.
Ma ride ben chi ride
La risata final.
Everything in the world is a joke.
Man is born a joker,
In his mind, his reason is
always wavering.
Everyone is fooled! Every
mortal taunts each other.
But he laughs well who
has the last laugh.
-Falstaff, Act III
Les métaux, ces fleurs souterraines
Aux impérissables couleurs,
Ne brillent qu'au front des reines,
Des rois, des papes, des grands-ducs,
et des empereurs.
Honneur aux maîtres ciseleurs!
Tra la la la,
Honneur aux maîtres ciseleurs!
Metals, those underground flowers
with never-fading colors,
only shine on the brows of queens,
of kings, of popes, of grand dukes,
and of emperors.
Honor to the master metalworkers!
Tra la la la...
Honor to the master metalworkers!
-Benvenuto Cellini, multiple appearances throughout the opera
Leicht kann des Frommen Herz auch wanken
Und überschreiten Recht und Pflicht,
Wenn Lieb' und Furcht der Tugend Schranken,
Verzweiflung alle Dämme bricht.
Ist's recht, auf einer Kugel Lauf
Zwei edler Herzen Glück zu setzen?
Und unterliegen sie den Netzen,
Womit sie Leidenschaft umflicht,
Wer höb' den ersten Stein wohl auf?
Wer griff' in seinen Busen nicht?
Even the pious heart can easily swerve
And step away from right and duty,
When love and fear of rightousness' limits
Despair breaks all bounds.
Is it right that two noble hearts' happiness depends on the course of one bullet?
And if they are defeated by the nets
in which passion entwines them,
Who is to raise the first stone?
Who does not look into his own heart?
-Der Freischütz, Act III
Adieu donc, vains objets qui nous charment sur terre !
Salut, premiers rayons de l'immortalité !
L'infini m'appelle et m'éclaire ;
Je meurs pour la justice et pour la liberté.
So farewell, useless things which charm us on earth!
Greetings, first light of immortality!
The infinite calls me and enlightens me;
I die for justice and for liberty.
-Hérodiade, Act IV
Liberté, redescends des cieux,
Et que ton règne recommence!
Liberty, come down again from the skies,
and may your reign begin anew!
-Guillaume Tell, Act IV
Listen well!
Down there, at the back of the cemetery,
there are two great linden trees! It is there I wish to rest forever!...
If this is refused me...
if Christian ground is forbidden to the corpse
of a wretched man,
go place my grave
near the road
or in the lonely valley!
While turning his eyes away
the pastor will pass by...
but if, in secret,
some woman will come visit the banished man...
and with a gentle tear having fallen on his spirit...
the dead man, the poor dead man...will feel blessed...
-Werther, Act IV
Tu vois bien que je parle la sienne
quand je l'embrasse ainsi...
You well see that I speak the same [language as her]
when I embrace her like this...
-Ariane et Barbe-bleue, Act II
Pourquoi, les maîtres?
Parce qu'ils t'on fait naître, se croient-ils le droit
d'emprisonner ta jeunesse adorable?
Why are they the masters?
Because they gave birth to you, they believe they have the right
to lock away your adorable youth?
-Louise, Act II

2020 was a troubling and disturbing year. I created a lot of music and experienced a lot of nights waking at 5am in a panic. I deeply missed the sacred experience of being able to see live music. In its absence of that I listened to a lot of music. It was difficult to whittle down this list but here are a lot of albums I enjoyed in 2020, in no particular order.

With all live performances canceled, this was truly the year of demo videos and home studio recording for me. These are 10 pieces of gear that came out in 2020 that helped keep me feeling creative and inspired during lockdown. In no particular order:
EHX Oceans 12 Dual Stereo Reverb - The Oceans 12 ticks all the boxes for what I’m looking for in a great soundscaping reverb. I used the Shimmer and Reverse algorithms in conjunction a lot when I was composing music for a film score.
Chase Bliss Audio Blooper - While I don’t actually own a Blooper, I had the pleasure of borrowing one from Mike of Baranik Guitars after NAMM this year. He made an incredible Blooper-inspired guitar and I was completely charmed by them both. Chase Bliss always delivers pedals that push me creatively and the Blooper truly hits the mark.
Cooper FX Arcades - I love everything Cooper FX has released to-date so the opportunity to access those sounds in one pedal via plug-in cartridges is just awesome.
SolidGoldFX NU-33 - I was asked to do a demo of this pedal for its release and ended up being really charmed by this box’s approach to lo-fi nostalgia. I’ve used it a lot for film scoring and highly recommend adding it to your collection.
Demedash Effects T-120 DLX V2 - I LOVE a good tape echo and the T-120 Deluxe V2 ranks up there with the best I’ve tried. This pedal made its way to me this Christmas and I look forward to making some beautiful sounds with it in the new year.
Hologram Electronics Microcosm - The Microcosm is one of those pedals where you should fully read the manual before diving in but once you put in that initial effort you’ve got a massively powerful tool on your hands. It does glitch like no other. Definitely worth the homework
Azzam Bells MP019 - I discovered this unique instrument through a post on Reverb’s IG page and immediately looked it up and ordered one. These experimental percussion instruments are hand-made in Italy and they’re as beautiful visually as they are sonically. I used it for bowed cymbal and daxophone sounds on a film score and it was absolutely haunting.
Echopark Dual Harmonic Boost 2 - I love the control you have over dialing in the perfect amount of grit with these dual boost circuits. I use it a lot as a textural tool when I’m laying down drones or bringing in big distorted swells. It’s one of the most versatile overdrives in my collection and I love that.
Fender Parallel Universe Series Volume II Maverick Dorado - I was smitten with the Maverick Dorado when I first saw it at NAMM. It has a lot of the specs that I look for in a guitar and the body shape with the Mystic Pine finish just blew me away. I hope that I get to use it live soon.
Polyeffects Beebo - The Beebo is one of those pedals that I genuinely feel is smarter than I am. It’s like an entire computer in one small touchscreen box. I can’t claim to have mastered using it yet but the sounds that I have managed to get out of it so far have been brilliant. I’m looking forward to spending more time with this box in 2021

HELM 2020 REVIEW
Let's get the bad stuff out the way first, 2020 was undoubtedly an awful year. I'm still not sure how to really respond to seeing a global pandemic bring the capital to its knees and everything I love and hold dear to a grinding halt. Our government fucked it's response, putting profit before people and killing tens of thousands. The Labour Party descended into farce with the newly elected leader Sir Keith revealing himself as a bland centrist with no opposition or ideas. On a personal level it sucked not being able to travel or see my friends in different parts of the world - or even the same country - who I am starting to miss a lot. However, I was fortunate enough to get through the year with my sanity intact. Music, art and culture once again being my main positive. I think I listened to more music than I have in any year ever. I read more books than I have done since I was a teenager probably. I also re-discovered the joys of walking long distances and am extremely thankful for living near a lot of incredible green spaces: Epping Forest, Walthamstow Wetlands, Walthamstow Marshes, Wanstead Park, Wanstead Flats...
Music. My favourite albums of the year.
Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin kynsi Wetware - Flail Raspberry Bulbs - Before The Age Of Mirrors Necrot - Mortal Rope Sect - The Great Flood Private World - Aleph Oneohtrix Point Never - Magic Oneohtrix Point Never Pyrrhon - Abcess Time CS+Kreme - Snoopy Speaker Music - Black Nationalist Sonic Weaponry Drew McDowall - Agalma Regis - Hidden In This Is The Light That You Miss Nazar - Guerilla Zoviet France - Russian Heterodoxical Songs (and all the ZF reissues!!) A shout-out to Jon Abby's AMPLIFY series on Bandcamp / Facebook, which I contributed a new piece of music to.
A shout out to the labels where most of the music I listened to seemed to come from:
The Trilogy Tapes Iron Bonehead Penultimate Press Dais La Vida Es Un Mus
Gigs. Despite live music being destroyed in 2020 I still saw a few unforgettable performances at the beginning of the year.
Graham Lambkin @ The ICA, London Puce Mary / JFK @ The Glove That Fits, London Demilich @ Finnfest, The Garage, London Container / PC World / National Unrest @ Venue MOT, London S.H.I.T / Asid / Chubby & The Gang @ Static Shock Festival, ExFed, London
Books I enjoyed. Most not published this year, but all read in 2020.
Joe Kennedy - Authentocrats David Balzer - Curationism Tom Mills - BBC: The Myth Of A Public Service Simon Morris - Consumer Guide: Special Edition Luke Turner - Out Of The Woods Various - Bad News For Labour Mike Wendling - Alt-Right Baited Area issues 1 & 2.
Film. Three good films I saw this year which I hadn't before.
Suspiria (Remake) Midsommar Cannibal Holocaust
Podcasts. I listened to a lot of these whilst walking.
We Don't Talk About The Weather Novara Media Tysky Sour & Novara FM Grounded with Louis Theroux System of Systems Red Scare loveline episodes Suite 212 NOISEXTRA Social Discipline CONTAIN
TV.
Didn't watch a huge amount and what I did was mostly trash. For some reason I rewatched both series' of This Life, a British drama from the late 90's about a group of young professionals house sharing and navigating their careers. Very cringey and has aged terribly, but it was perversely fascinating to revisit something from that time in the age of the pandemic. Following on from this I binge watched the entire series of Industry which was entertaining enough. A programme about a bunch of horny bankers with what felt like a confused ideology behind it. It seemed stuck between trying to criticise and glorify the culture around the industry, but also protect the industry itself from outside criticism by portraying anyone who may oppose as an insufferable wanker. Currently halfway through Succession which is OK. The Murdoch documentaries on the BBC were excellent and a rare respite from their descent into client journalism.
Thanks to anyone who listened to my music this year also. Best wishes to you all for 2021.

1. My Nr. 1 lesson: patience. Whether it's bouncing through 30 seconds of severe turbulence at 39000 feet or slogging through 30 minutes of a interminable piece of concert music, one attribute I've tried to develop is the ability to see past the discrete and awaited ending, the exact framing of the immediate process, but put it into the context of a larger time frame. I've found that this year more than all others has demanded it. Breathing helps...
2. Books: revisiting old favorites from the realm of Thomas Pynchon and Philip K. Dick (both especially relevant), digging into John Lomax's portrait of Jelly Roll Morton, the works of Colson Whitehead, random things off of the shelf…
3. Composing: with touring off the table, I focused on that which needed to be written, some requested and commissioned, some spontaneously springing forth. Composing requires that one open the windows wide to the world, which at this moment brought in grief, terror, uncertainty, anxiety, visions of plague and pestilence and incipient fascism. Okay, now shut the window and get to work! How to process, translate, transform? The work can be a comfortable and obsessive cocoon once one learns to handle the radioactive materials and put them into the creativity reactor.
4. Beans! We have long been a fan in our house of the wide world of legumes but this year brought two stars to the front: the black bean and the red lentil. The black bean commands the lofty peaks but the seemingly infinite variations of dal surround it. Ginger, garlic, turmeric, smoked paprika, cayenne, onions, and olive oil form the basis then imagination builds.
5. Online teaching substituted for my canceled conduction of workshops in the Pyrenees Mountains of France. Between the participants and myself, we built a temporary but very congenial space online to share concepts and music. In addition, private lessons brought conversation and music with new friends in Germany, Italy, California, Australia, Illinois, Denmark, Pennsylvania, Spain, Florida, Brazil.
6. What started out as "stress baking" (before I even had heard of the term) soon became a frequent practice that yielded very edible results. The twins preferred the sweeter forays into banana bread and chocolate cake. I tried to find a balance between tried-and-true techniques and experiments in texture and taste with yeasted pumpernickels, multi-grains, and seed breads.
7. While not the same as performing 'live ', online gigs proved that it was possible to generate a surprising amount of adrenaline even without the pheromonal handshaking of a room filled with receptive ears. As a corollary, online recording collaborations with friends worldwide proved to be inspiring and a suitable substrate for sonic experimentation, exploration of new instruments, tunings, effects programming, structures. In these realms, shout-outs to Helene Breschand, Mike Cooper, Henry Kaiser, Tracie Morris, Mikel Banks, Dougie Bowne, Payton McDonald, Billy Martin, Colin Stetson, Jim O'Rourke, Scott Amendola, Roberto Zorzi, Jason Hoopes, Eric Mingus, Melanie Dyer, Dave Hofstra, Don McKenzie, Sergio Sorrentino, Veniero Rizzardi, Taylor Ho Bynum, Scott Fields, Bachir Attar, Karl Bruckmaier, Robbie Lee, Matthew Evan Taylor, Matteo Liberatore, Al Kaatz, David Barratt, Jessica Hallock, Kolin Zeinikov, Robbie Lee, Jeremy Nesse, James Ilgenfritz, Sergio Armaroli, Steve Piccolo, Sandy Ewen, David Weinstein, Jim Whittemore, Chris Vine, Werner Puntigam, William Schimmel.

Ten Things That Didn’t Happen in 2020
1. I didn’t write a ton of new music. Don’t get me wrong, I wrote some. I always do. But mostly I focused on my new YouTube channel, essays, and on getting old recordings released. I haven’t even been working a day-job so I thought I was going to write my next Ring Cycle, but I really didn’t find Covid inspiring.
2. Trump wasn’t re-elected. Cool.
3. I didn’t lose anyone to Covid. I am, of course, profoundly grateful for this. But I feel pretty embarrassed remembering group-texting ten friends in March, “We are all going to see a loved one die. Every single one of us. Don’t kid yourselves”. I can get hysterical, and that was somewhat irresponsible of me.
4. No revolution happened. I don’t mean to be smug or cynical, or to belittle anyone’s participation in the protests. But, as far as I can tell, nothing happened in 2020 that promises to reduce police brutality or human suffering of any kind. We’ll see. That burning Minneapolis police station was exciting to watch at the time, if only on an aesthetic level.
5. I have a stack of unread books I bought this year, just staring at me, with nary a crease among them. These include:
Adorno and Horkheimer, The Dialectic of Enlightenment (looks amazing, but I haven’t touched it) Marx, Grundrisse (it’s 1000 pages for fuck’s sake. Amazon also accidentally sent me two copies, and its double presence in the stack is just comical) Reza Negarestani, Intelligence and Spirit (the first 15 pages blew my mind, then my mind blew it off)
6. I didn’t settle into living in LA. I moved here six months before Covid and I was just starting to cultivate some friendships and play shows. This was quashed and I still feel like I still live in New York. I still barely know the layout of the city here.
7. No brand-new buzzy musical artists burst onto the scene, that I can recall. No new hyped micro-genre of the moment. There was just no way for there to be a hot new trend. I’d say that was refreshing, but it wasn’t.
8. Tyson’s return was not awesome. Two minute rounds, ended in a draw. I’ve been getting way into boxing this past year. This fight was a bummer. I’m looking forward to Mayweather vs Logan Paul (LOL) because we know it’s comedy ahead of time.
9. For three weeks in July, I didn’t do a single thing other than watch street fight compilations on YouTube and Worldstar. That’s just grim.
10. There were no school shootings in March. Apparently, this was the first March with no school shootings since 2002. Not a single 7th grader got a hand job in March either. I cannot begin to imagine what it’s like to be a kid now.

Work 2020
Despite Covid 19 lots of things actually did happen.
In Feburary I visited the only active nuclear plant in The Nederlands as part of my "Expanded Field Recording” project together with SML. In March revisited the Acousmonium at the Elevate Festival in Graz with an additional trip deep inside the Schlossberg recording old mining trains. In March and April I did two daily recording projects “Pending and Auditory Scenes” - both of Amsterdam during lockdown. In May did my first Zoom field recording workshop with the CAMP project. In June & July two research trips in Waldviertel, Austria with Franz Pomassl. In August recorded bells and organs in 10 different churches around Amsterdam for Jacob Lekkerkerker. In September recorded Kali Malone at the Orgelpark in Amsterdam. Performed at Heart of Noise Festival in Innsbruck and A4 in Bratislava. Also went ice-skating for first time in 20? Years. In November and December I travelled to Jeju island to record field recordings for a project by Femke Herregraven for the Gwangju Biennale, commissioned for 2021. Did lots of gardening, released two tapes “Call it Philips, Eindoven” and “Zomer 2020” with Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson. NOW! Looking forward to 2021.

Bnha boys x CrackHead! Reader
Gifs aren't mine
So incredibly scared of you
You are probably the first and last person that will always scare the living shit out of him
Once you two were going to the mall
And all of the sudden you started to do the jaywalk and almost everyone looked at you like you were a mad man
While he was like
"Nope I don't know who that dickhead is. Nope nope nope nope nope-" While walking away
He is so concern for you
He just wants you to be safe please stop making plans about how you two are going to free aliens from area 51 by filling the Nevada desert with gamer girl bath water
Once he saw you eat a whole ass lemon
Like it wasn't even peeled
He really loves you but sometimes you're just too much for him
"Hey izuku"
"Yes honey?"
"What would happen if mayonnaise came in cans? I think it would be really sad because you can't microwave metal. What do you think?"
.
..
...
....
"I'M GONNA BEAT YOU TO DEATH WITH MY SHOE-"
You are the Master CrackHead and he is your apperentice Chad
You two radiate so much destructive energy while together
Both of you practice Naruto running and other meme stuff
Nobody understands the two of you
Relationship goals UwU
Doesn't understand you at all
Can misunderstand you CrackHead behavior for you having a stroke
Like once you started to sing that cockroach autotune
"Wew wew weeeeeew ,weeeeeeeeeeeew wa wa waaaaaaaaaaaaw"
"S-s/o are you ok?"
"Ba da de do dah , Bo ba radi"
"For the love of God what is happening to you?!?!!"
"Ski didi do didi do didi do do di di do dida didaaa dooooo das da didi da do di"
Loves you a lot but you also scare him and he will bow before your power to keep his life

Lets pronounce stuff ( ̄▽ ̄)
Tagalog is easy to pronounce, almost all of the words are read exactly as it they are written.
It might get confusing though, you will notice that there are a lot of the letter "a" in the language, for example there’s a well known Elevator scene:
Person 1: (runs to elevator) Bababa ba?
Person 2: (nods) Bababa.
what happened? Well I can simply break it down just for you:
Bababa (Going down)
Baba (Down)
Ba? (Is it?)
Do you think its nakakapagpabagabag? (Worrisome)
Its OK! You'll get used to it, besides, to efficiently learn a language you must start from the very beginning (we could read children's books if we have to!)
Lets start by letting you get used to the sounds, try saying these out loud:
A E I O U BA BE BI BO BU DA DE DI DO DU GA GE GI GO GU HA HE HI HO HU LA LE LI LO LU MA ME MI MO MU NA NE NI NO NU NGA NGE NGI NGO NGU PA PE PI PO PU RA RE RI RO RU SA SE SI SO SU TA TE TI TO TU WA WE WI WO WU YA YE YI YO YU
A= pronounced as the a in Apple
E= pronounced as the e in Elephant
I= pronounced as the I in Igloo
O= pronounced as the o in Orange (none of that “oh” or “owe” just straight up O(range)
U= pronounced as the u in Uber ( similar to “oo” sound in a cows “Moo”) (or “oof” xD)
Now you might be asking, what the heck is the “NGA” parts? well it makes the same sound from the following ingles (english) words:
“Sing Along” “Thingamabob”
notice how there is no super hard emphasis on the G (ex. Chimichanga)?
The “Ng” on its own is pronounced the same way as the NG in:
“Walking” “Drawing” “Learning”
I will use the word “Walking” for now, and add the vowels at the end try saying the following words (remember the nga sound in Sing Along):
Walkinga
Walkinge
Walkingi
Walkingo
Walkingu
______
Here are some sample sentence:
“Ano gagawin natin ngayon? (What are we doing today)
“Nge, peke pala yung nabili ko” (nge! I accidentally bought a fake one!)
“Masakit ngipin ko” (My teeth/tooth hurts)
“Mabango mga bulaklak” (The Flowers smell good)
“May Talumpati ata ang Pangulo mamaya (The President might have a speech later)
______
Slang time d(°∀°d) as always DONT use in formal situations:
“Ngeh” or “Ngek”
it does not mean anything. rather, it is an interjection. its an expression to when something that surprises you (but in a sarcastic way) similar to “Lol what?” or “seriously?” “is that for real?” it has a “seriously? thats so dumb!” tone to it. (depends on what region you are in the Philippines)
ex.
“Ngeh, pano nangyari yun?” (”wha? how did that even happen?”)
“Ngek, mali yung sagot ko..” (”My answer was wrong.”.)
“Nganga”
technically it means an “open mouth”. when a person is speechless, either you ended up “nganga” or they ended up “nganga”, or you both ended up “nganga”, in this case you’re both “Tunganga”
“Tunganga”
Dazed / Spaced out
“Ahhh”
this is easy, its just the tagalog version of “oooh”. like “oooh I get it!” in tagalog its an a sound, “Ahhh gets ko na!”
“Tungak!”
the word “Tanga” is a rude way to say idiot / Dumba** (though some close friends use it anyway, you know how friends are). The word “Tungak” Is a less rude of saying it. kind of like “Oh you idiot haha!” (still not saying that you should use this formally though, I mean you are still calling someone an idiot)
“Ewan (ko)” / “Malay (ko)”
a slang for “I dont know” ( its very unprofessional) its pretty much equivalent to “How the heck would I know?” in fact, you say it in the same tone.
“Ehhh”
compared to “ahh” this isnt as positive, its like, when someone asks you to do your chores but your too lazy just go “eeeeh”. pretty much equivalent to “uuuugh” you could add “Ayoko” at the end to make it
“Eeehh, Ayoko!” (“Ugghhgh I dont want to!”)
“Eh”
some people usually add this at the end like an accent, usually those people are sarcastic. its also similar to “well...” for example
“Hindi ko naman alam eh!” (“Well its not like I knew about it!”)
“Ohh diba”
equivalent would be “Hah! see what I did?” you know those hah! in your face or I told you so moments where you prove someone wrong? say this to all the non-believers,
“Oh diba! sabi ko sayo eh!” (”Hah! I told you so!”)
“Geh”
not to be confused with the meme, although..they are pronounced the same;; its equivalent to “whatever”.

Jakurai: 「これで最後だ」 “Kore de saigo da” “This is the final”
Doppo: 「終了ぉお」 “Shyuuryooooo” “Eeeeeeeeend”
[Chorus] [Chorus]* : the first line is slightly different from [Chorus], just “決戦/kessen” instead of “最終決戦”. So instead of “ultimate final battle”, it’s “final battle.”
TL Notes:
The og text is "男臭い", which also means "manly" or "masculine", therefore it could also be translated as "You're so manly...I can smell it." So instead of attacking Riou directly it could be bit more petty.
Here I used “enthralling” for simplicity; the og text is “夢中にさせる”, which literally means something like “make you feel as if you’re in dreams”. So this could translate to something like “Shinjuku is the dream/fantasy of 19-year-olds to aunties.”
The og text is “そう甘くない”, meaning “it’s not easy/innocent/simple”, and to capture all that I used an idiom instead of a more literal translation.
“単細胞/tansaibou” means a single-minded or simple-minded person, but literally it means “single cell”. It’s like how the person has only one brain cell, or that he’s a unicellular organism.
Here on the lyrics sheet from the CD, it says “すくおう(sukuou)” which could be “救おう” or “巣食おう”. The two words in this line could mean either Jakurai would “save” or “nest/take root in” the darkness of a deep well. Depending on your impression of Jakurai...
On the lyrics sheet it says “石”, which reads “ishi” and is the same pronunciation as “医師”, doctor.
They’re referring to themselves; as in they’re the rogues standing by the sides of Jakurai.
In case you don’t know already, Matenrou is also the pronunciation for “skyscraper” in Japanese, so it’s a wordplay that can also mean “we’re the skyscrapers that scrapes the sky.”
