MAG 177: Wonderland

So I’ve heard this episode thrown around vaguely and heard about Dr David, who was sone gaslighting doctor but I never really paid attention. But guys holy shit I cannot stress to you all enough on how terrified I was. I was circling my kitchen island and grabbing water every 10 seconds. Something about this freaked me out. The second-person, the way Dr David belittled and threatened and his cherry attitude I hated it. I was shrieking.

But also Helen!!!! <33 I wonder what’s her game, offering Basira a one-way ride to Daisy. It certainly wasn’t out of the kindness of her own heart. Did she want to trap Basira maybe in her hallways? Or did she know Basira would decline and wanted to sow a little seed of distrust in the now trio. I wonder why Basira declined. I thought she would totally abandon Jon and Martin. Either way, crazy episode.

Oh this was depressing. I liked how Martin and Basira made Jon go into the tool closet, I thought that was funny. But damn…Tyler :(((

There was a statement about a guy who worked at a slaughterhouse (MAG 30) and Tom Hann was always a big name for The Flesh. I can’t remember if he died though. If he didn’t, then he could be in charge of this factory. I’m just theorizing though.

[Heads up!: talk of soulmates/red string of fate, little bit of angst, fluff, the 'fell first vs fell harder' trope]

"Do you believe in soulmates?"

The question makes Law pause where he's in the middle of reading about a blood-borne pathogen, looking up and over. Splayed out over his bed with your own book in your hand, you stare back. He frowns.

"Why are you asking?"

You shrug. "It's in this book," you say, "It's talking about how there's different ways to look at it. If they're two pieces of the same soul just separated and always trying to make it back to each other, or if something called a string of fate ties them together."

Law makes a noise in the back of his throat. "That sounds ridiculous."

"So you don't believe in them?"

"No." He watches you for a moment, studying you. "Do you?"

You hum, lifting one of your hands and focusing on your pinky. You can almost see it, the neat knot of red tied around the knuckle, string that loops and weaves aimlessly through the air. If such a thing exists, you wonder where it leads, then about where you wish it would.

"No," you answer at last, "I suppose I don't."

If Law lets himself think about fate tying you to him with red string, it's far less romantic. But there must be something that keeps you in his orbit, silent pull to bind you to him.

It scares him. Scares him for how badly he wants to let you in, expose soft underbelly and trust you won't sink your teeth in and rip it all apart.

The push and pull is how he copes with it even though he knows it's unfair to you ㅡ taunts you with what could be, then pushes you away. Open and shut, over and over.

You're tired of it, he knows that. So he apologizes, not sure what exactly he's sorry for. Sorry that he only knows how to take and less how to give, that he only knows how to lose.

You understand that. He knows, you've told him before. But even you have your limits. "I will have you without armor, Law," you tell him, "or I will not have you at all."

He knows it isn't fair to you. But he wishes things were different, that he were different ㅡ and that when he lets himself think about that red string, it wasn't wrapped around your throat.

Law's emotions are a house of cards and his defenses a glass house ㅡ and all it takes for both to crumble is, of course, almost losing you.

It's through no fault of his own, but he still feels sick as he dabs at the blood threatening to drip down into your eye.

"What you did was beyond reckless," he scolds sharply, wraps soft worry in barbed wire, "if you'd stuck to the damn plan, you wouldn't have gotten hurt."

"Sometimes you have to improvise." He gets the feeling you're not just talking about the situation at hand, but he doesn't care to analyze it at the moment.

"Whatever. You sound like that idiot Strawhat." He wants to keep scolding you, hammer home just how dumb you've been ㅡ but you're watching him, and the thin rubberband of his patience snaps.

The kiss is far from gentle. It's messy and clumsy, tastes a little like blood and gunpowder, but that hardly matters when you're kissing him back with the same kind of desperation.

Law doesn't put much weight in the idea of soulmates. It's a romantic connection at best and baseless for proof at worst, straddling somewhere in the middle.

But he supposes he does like the idea that you've always been meant for him, and he for you ㅡ that orbit gets easier to accept when he puts it that way. Or perhaps the atoms that make the two of you up have simply existed together for long enough in the grand scheme of things to echo through, even now.

You laugh when he tells you that, reaching to tug at a lock of his unruly hair. "Putting a scientific spin on it takes the romance out of it, Law."

His eyes flick to your lips and back. "Does it matter?"

Your expression turns thoughtful. "No, I suppose it doesn't." If you want to say more, Law doesn't know because he leans in to kiss you.

Be that you're a soul split in half trying to reunite or truly woven together by a thin red string, Law doesn't know.

What he does know is that you're in his bed, kissing him back, and that's all that matters.

Okay listen the reason I made R throw hands is cus I was salty at one of my friends (who I kinda...maybe...have a tiny itty bitty little crush on) kept complimenting my smile and I can't handle affection well so I had to self project ALSO THE NEW CHAPTER? I NEED TO READ IT BUT I GOTTA STUDY (I read like half and I am speechless istg i love ur writing katy- it's insane how much you've improved from ur first fanfic to now) Daily Hobie HC! Love languages time- personally, I think he's all of them (+teasing), both giving and receiving. Hobie likes to know that you're there with him, whether it's holding onto the pinkie of your hand with his or looping a finger into your belt loops. Subtle, nonchalant clinginess, basically. Unless he feels like being an ass. He'll sometimes come up behind you and lightly tap your hips, letting you know he's there as he just unwinds silently, leaning against your back with his face buried into your hair. His arms are usually wrapped around your waist, resting lazily there as he calms his mind with your presence. (Or perhaps, if you're like my sona and wear layered necklaces, he'll gently attempt to untangle them) In large crowds, in order not to lose you, Hobie will silently loop a finger through your beltloops, or slip his hand onto your pocket, or even just grip the edges of your pocket. Whatever gets him to be able to at least hold you, in a way, he's happy. With gift-giving, no doubt he'll be leaving little trinkets with notes attached to them. Sometimes, it's something from his inter-dimensional travels, or just a nice smelling candle he nicked that he thought you might've liked. The notes he leaves with these little gifts always manage to make you smile, with a tiny doodle of you and him, a few scribbly love hearts around both of you as well. No doubt you have a little box dedicated to these sticky notes, always bein sure to put them in immediately after receiving them. Unbeknownst to him, you pull that box out and look over the doodles whenever you feel a bit too worried about him, and it calms your nerves easy. Quality time with Hobie is always amusing one way or another. Whether it's a sleepover leading to you waking up to him DIY-ing another leather jacket on the floor with silver studs scattered every where, or both of you just have a relaxing time painting each other's nails, or even allowing you to colour in his tattoos as he dozes off. If you're currently struggling to overcome something, he's your number one supporter, and always by your side. He'll always make sure you know how much he's proud of you, planting little kisses on your shoulder and muttering how well you're going. He'll murmur how much he loves you against your lips as you kiss a hundred times if he needed to. Hobie is always up for doing something for you if you're dealing with something, cue the multiple times he's helped you through stress or periods or just overall with life. Although he isn't really the best therapist, he'll still let you rant to him while he focuses on making some snacks for you, simply just making you 'sit there and look pretty', while in reality you're watching him carefully to make sure he doesn't try to blow anything up. LORE UNDER THE CUT

--- (intro card) Lumi is a kind-hearted Toon with powers of telepathy. When Lumi holds someone's hand, they can read their friend's mind! It's a hefty responsibility, but they always use to help friends feel their best. ---

...Lumi (they/them) has the power to read other Toon's minds. When they make skin contact with another Toon, they read what that Toon is thinking.

Lumi can't control this power. Anytime they touch another Toon they receive flashes of thought or even memory. They wear one glove on their right hand so they can interact with others.

Lumi has a lot of difficulty telling their own thoughts from other people's thoughts, as their power doesn't offer much differentiation. When they touch someone, they don't just read thoughts, they think what their target is thinking.

E.G. if Lumi touches Teagan while she's thinking about green tea, Lumi is now thinking about green tea and may continue to do so even after the connection is ended.

The only way for Lumi to know if the thought they're thinking belongs to someone else is if they know they're touching someone else. Whenever they touch someone, they assume that anything they think belongs to other person.

...Occasionally, touch will trigger Lumi to have a fully-fledged vision where they experience one of the Toon's memories as if they were that toon.

When they know they're in a memory, the memory can be very helpful. Lumi can use information gathered to talk things through with the Toon, like a therapist.

Sometimes they don't know they're in a memory, which can be deeply harmful. Lumi experiences memories from the perspective of the Toon who owns it, meaning that they feel everything the Toon felt, think everything the Toon thought.

This can go as far as delusions that they are the Toon in the memory, which makes it harder to get out of the memory. Most often, they just have to wait for the memory to end of its own volition.

Occasionally, a memory can be so strong that it loops. When Lumi gets "stuck" in a looping memory they typically can't move physically and also aren't perceiving anything physically.

Their handler, Isaac, has a history in social work and is very well-equipped to help ease Lumi out of loops.

...After reading strong memories, some will linger in Lumi's subconscious and resurface later. This can manifest as delusions associated with that memory. Lumi has a notebook where they write information about themselves to help them figure out if they're experiencing a delusion or not.

E.G. Lumi wakes up in the middle of the night in a panic, realizing that they forgot to bake cookies for Gardenview's big community bake sale tomorrow. Only, the bake sale was weeks ago. Sprout had come to Lumi looking for comfort about his stress, which now turned into Lumi's stress.

In that sort of situation, Lumi always reads through their notebook and goes "Ohhh yeah, I'm not a baker even if I know that I am. I don't have to do anything right now. I can wait for this to fade and go back to bed."

Sometimes Lumi will wake up stuck in a loop. For this reason, Isaac, their handler, is primarily on graveyard shifts.

...Lumi also has a few different checks they can do to see if they're in a memory. They go up in effectiveness, as stronger delusions can make weaker checks fail.

Lumi always wears their glove on their right hand. They never wear anything on their left hand. If they look at their hands and see their glove on their left hand, they know they're in a memory and can wait it out. If they see their glove on their right hand, it does not automatically mean they're not in a memory, because their brain often makes them see their glove on their right hand in memories.

Lumi can sometimes tell if they're wearing their hat, cloak, and glove. If they're not wearing any of these items, it may be because their body is that of another Toon due to being in a memory. This check can fail if their brain keeps their body the same in the memory. Even if they fully believe the Toon's body is their body, they're checking for specifically any hat, any cloak, and any glove, not their hat and their cloak etc.

The single most effective check is asking another Toon to tell them their name. "Uhm. Teagan? Can you tell me my name?" "Of course dear, you are Lumi." Lumi knows that even if they believe their name to be Glisten or Toodles, if they don't hear specifically "Lumi" when someone tells them their name, they're in a memory.

...Due to the incredibly uncontrolled and volatile nature of their power, Lumi hates unexpected touch. One surprise touch can send them into a loop they can't get out of.

Ok so I know I haven't talked Enough about legendkeepers for this to make total sense, but recently I talked about them to a friend about there being a group chat post-games, namely for the sake of keeping people in the loop for potential legendary incidents. Then I joked about how the missing/fallen ex-champion of Unova, Lena, could get rediscovered if you had Kimmie (Unova's stand-in champ) and Maciel (ex-member of Team Snagem and orre trainer) talking long enough, and this whole chatlog wrote itself!

I really don’t blame Mai at all. It’s not right for her to use Tol for his money, but really this poor fucking girl. And in previous loops this would mean that her mom and Tol both die on the same night. This is way too much for one person to handle normally.

Tin is wrecked by Tol dying this time, it was so painful and way more drawn out than before. And now Mai has 2 funerals to plan because her mom was HARVESTED, and Fang got MURDERED for finding out about it, and Varit was already in a bad mental space and now he has to deal with the knowledge that one of his kidneys was stolen, and it’s all falling apart.

Spot is already a vampire when the story opens. It’s been about four years (note, I haven’t written any vampires who have been immortal for very long. The oldest is Sniper, who’s been a vampire for almost six years), and he’s pretty much accepted that. This is a thing that’s happening, I guess. Whether or not he’s okay with being vampire or if he’s just ignoring it is up for debate, but he definitely provides some stability for the others. Personality-wise he kind of leans into the aesthetic purely because he thinks it’s funny. Like all black and eyeliner and metal music, you know. Davey thinks it’s hilarious (they’re friends <3).

Albert is human and a friend of Racetrack. He finds out about vampires from Race, who in turn finds out from Spot, and from that point the two of them are always around. Both of them are somewhat ignoring the actual downsides of being a vampire, though in somewhat different ways. Albert mostly just jokes with them all the time and like… it’s hard for him to be scared of the guy who just ran headfirst into a glass door because there was a dog to pet on the other side, even if that guy could drink him like a Capri-sun.

Racetrack’s arc is my favorite, probably because the angst potential is fantastic. I can’t give away too much without it being spoilers, but Race does end up becoming a vampire later on, and he’s romanticized the hell out of it, and now that’s coming around to bite him (pun intended 😉). He thinks he can handle it, but he really can’t. It also loops back around to his relationships with Jack and Davey, because he thinks they are a coward and a pessimist, respectively, but once he’s a vampire, he gets why Jack hates it so much, and he gets why Davey wouldn’t want to be like them. He didn’t understand why they don’t think this is the coolest thing ever, until he has to realize firsthand why it’s not the coolest thing ever.

Race is also a friend of Sarah long before he’s a vampire, which is going to cause a lot of chaos (not necessarily angst, I think they deserve to be funny).

raii!! my dear friend raii! hello. so. i have finished harrow the ninth (courtesy of staying up until 3 am) and i have soo many thoughts.

firstly, FUCK U IANTHE. HOW COULD U KILL MY BITCH WIFE. WHAT THE FUCK. PAIN AND SUFFERING UPON THIS EARTH. (wife in question being augustine obviously. augustine the first? he sure is! first in my heart. because i love him. so much) very unfair that all my favs keep dying i thinks. sure gideon is somewhat? back and palamedes had his moment but. i don't see augustine coming back from this one :(((((

other than that, overall it was v good! really love the descriptions. they're always very pretty and poetic but not too waxy. like. they always include something imperfect and it makes them feel very real if ykwim? also so good to see gideon return! oh how i missed her and her narration. big fan of the second person pov too! i think it's very clever how it's tied in with the story
