Tired af but I randomly think about the fact that for madoka magica being set with the cast In MIDDLE SCHOOL you'd think people would take that into account with the decisions wishes and actions of these kids being well stupid. Nobody in middle school has a full idea what their actions will cause or the effects of their decisions especially not when you knoe they get a chance to make a miracle occur.
But not the point this is about the people being like omg homura made a dumb decisions Yada yada
Yeah of course her wish and actions wouldn't be the smartest she's a chronically ill child who spent an undisclosed amount of time of her childhood isolated from her peers went to a catholic school and as said is a middle schooler her perception if everything is going to be fucked over cause she isn't an adult. And uh trauma and youth just fuck ppl over more. So honestly her only snapping and deciding to split madoka is not the weirdest response that a teen could do. Like she doesn't force anyone to do anything when she rewrites the world not even make madoka like her she just wants the person she loves to have a chance at live (it is toxic af still but it's yet again th3 decision of a child)
Anyways tldr: people forgot a key part of context when analyzing the decisions of this cast in that THERE ALL FUCKING MIDDLE SCHOOLERS THEIR GOING TO MAKE STUPID ASS DECISIONS THERE NOT EVEN 15 YEAR OLDS AND NO ONE THAT AGE RANGE KNOWS SHIT

disney villains ranked by how good they would be as a toxic romantasy love interest
10. gaston. make no mistake, he ranks highly in toxicity, and would no doubt excel in one of those romance novels about douchebros reenacting the most dangerous game with nondescript brunettes. but thereā€™s simply no way he can hold his own against the faeries and monsters and sorcerers youā€™ll meet in chapter three.
09. hades. lord of the underworld is a fantastic gig, but i personally feel that his reliance upon comedy and snark somewhat undercuts the promising menace of him shouting that he owns you. heā€™d make a real charmer of a sidequest flirtation, though, if you survive it.
08. captain hook. manipulation is the bread and butter of your common or garden toxic romantasy love interest, and we all saw the way he played poor tinker bell. it ruled. do me next. extra credit for an underplayed tragic immortal angle (hey, heā€™s stuck in neverland, too!) and being figuratively and literally haunted by his own doom.
07. shan yu. for a villain with limited screentime he really has a way of setting the imagination aglow. what if your village was razed by a warlord and you ended up encountering him repeatedly in battle and for all the casually contemptuous evil heā€™s previously displayed he faced you with respect as an equal (and he *remembered* you) and oh no heā€™s hot. what then. he also gets bonus points because i think they made his hawk a beautiful lady shapeshifter in the live-action movie. two for the price of one.
06. the evil queen. she sets a high bar for unhealthy obsession, and ā€œmad scientistā€ is an underrepresented flavor in this genre, plus the magic mirror has a lot of creepyhot stalking potential. sheā€™s pretty high-maintenance, though, and her vanity simply wouldnā€™t allow your heroic quest and/or the other corner of the love triangle to share the spotlight with her. she might be better off as a supporting character in the deadly decadent court who calls you menacing endearments and strokes your face and gives you the feeling that youā€™re suddenly in way over your head.
05. frollo. oh, i hear you gnashing your teeth and wringing your hands. ā€œnot frollo!ā€ yes frollo. if i was reading a romantasy novel and the villain told the protagonist that they were just imagining a rope around her beautiful neck, i would feel ripped off if they werenā€™t at *least* furiously making out in secret by the climax. your conscience may demur, but who hasnā€™t secretly yearned to have a city burned to the ground over them?
04. morā€™du. who? you know morā€™du. the big fuckoff bear from brave. the big fuckoff bear who once was a brooding, hulking celtic prince who massacred his whole family and underwent a devastating transformation-by-curse into a literal monster. itā€™s only his sheer bad luck that he ended up as a minor character in a heartwarming mother-daughter narrative and not the villain protagonist of a romantasy thatā€™s half beauty and the beast and half texas chain saw massacre. but, with your help, we can change that.
03. jafar. he doesnā€™t rank more highly because itā€™s less fun when theyā€™re only creepy to you and obsessed with you for, like, five minutes at the end, but still. he pulls it off *so* well, heā€™s got just the right kind of megalomaniac agenda, and he gets extra credit for style and the hypnosis thing. cue the agonizing yet erotic internal monologues from our protagonist about how he *compels* them.
02. TIE! between two gentlemen who operate on very similar levels of charming toxicity and would therefore thrive in this setting:
hans. itā€™s honestly a shame heā€™s in a disney childrenā€™s movie and not a five hundred page novel called a realm of ice and snow or whatever. he would not only be endgame but he would also have a small army of booktokers calling our protagonist names for doubting his love for them after one eensy little lying to them and leaving them to die incident. heā€™d be exactly as awful as he is canonically and heā€™d come out smelling like a rose.
dr. facilier. the *perfect* balance of tragic backstory versus inexcusable jackassery, and no one is immune to the charms of a roguish magician dabbling in that which he should not. heā€™ll sell you the prettiest vision of a future together that you ever did see, and then heā€™ll sell you out to evil forces to further his personal agenda, and he will not be sorry about it. heā€™ll call you doll while draining every drop of your blood for The Ritual and he wonā€™t lose a wink of sleep. no romantic groveling apology from this one, either, iā€™m afraid. but heā€™d be so worth it.
01. maleficent. evil sexy faery who lives on something called the forbidden mountain, who devoted sixteen years of her life to tormenting a beautiful peasant with a secret royal lineage, up to and including kidnapping the ā€œcorrectā€ love interest to prevent them from saving our protagonist from her own wicked plans? if there *isnā€™t* already a romantasy novel out in the world that is blatant aurora/maleficent fic, i will eat my hat.
honorable mentions:
rasputin. sure, heā€™s only a disney villain by technicality. but what romantasy protagonist worth their salt would kick the rotting lich-priest who murdered their whole family, and is trying to murder them, out of bed on a technicality?
bruno madrigal, who wasnā€™t a villain at all, but by gods he should have been. secret uncle who lives in the walls and is tragically haunted by your seemingly immutable shared fate *and* youā€™re his *favorite*? the gothic romantasy fans would devour him.

God the more I rewatch Etoiles fight the more it hurts. Hell the more I watch any parent fight their egg it hurts, from Max bawling over Trump to Quackity being basically insta killed by Tilin and Roiers anger as fake Bobby didn't attack them while Jaiden was filled with conflicting delusional happiness.
But especially this Etoiles fight yesterday puts the whole dinner into a much bigger perspective and I'd like to think that that's the reason why they put Phil in the fight with Etoiles.
They wanted him to hesitate.
They wanted Phil to be the burden during that fight because those things carry the names of his children, the children he'd burn the world down for. But they underestimated how strict Phil is with his trust and decision making to the point that even in egg form he treated them like they were monsters instead of his children.
Phil's special because while yes during Etoiles fight the code got better at adapting to an egg its still the same concept. He still had definite proof that that wasn't her but he still hesitated.
And I wanna go into the why of that, Phil's a hard-core player through and through and you will not get that out of his playstyle, you can see it on every multi-player server he's been on in the past because thats just how he plays the game. And as a hard-core player he probably has the most interesting relationship to mortality and is someone who can understand the eggs on a whole different level. But this means he's also INCREDIBLY aware of how much weight decision making carries and how even a single decision could decide over him staying alive or dying, he's used to that, it doesn't bother him anymore. That's why Phil is also someone who's very confident in his decisions, when he says he won't do or go to something because he knows the outcome then he means that and not even curiosity will get the better of him if he sees any form of danger or risk. If he tells Tallulah or Chayanne an instruction he expects them to follow it to a T because he gives those for good reasons each time (and both of his kids know that his instructions are teachings more than they are just him telling them to do something). And this confidence in his own decisions is why he fought those codes so relentlessly at the dinner, I'm convinced even if he hadn't gone back to get a picture of his kids he still would've fought these codes the same way. He trusts his experience and he trusts that he'll be able to deal with the consequences of his own decisions no matter if the outcome is good or bad. There's a reason why other players usually come to him for advice or when he spends time with someone he naturally falls into a teaching role, it's because he knows so much because he's had to know it all to survive in a world where death is inevitable.
Now why does that differ him from Etoiles? Well Him and Etoiles are good fighter's in their own ways. There's no doubt about that. But Etoiles is more upfront, he's smart during pvp and incredibly knowledgeable about statistics and strategy but ironically enough he still struggles to trust in his own words and decisions. He's someone who's quickly plagued by regret or doubts, it's why he praises Bad and Phil so much. Because both of them are incredibly headstrong and confident in their decisions just due to sheer experience. Etoiles just isn't even if his experience is just as good. And you can see this hesitancy even during the dinner fight, he didn't want to fight the codes until they hit him first. And it was Phil screaming to kill those things that made him set on actually attacking. Even when he got singled out later on and had a fake Tallulah follow him, he didn't attack until Phil confirmed Tallulah was safe with him. Etoiles trusts Bads and Phil's words a lot and holds them both in high regards when it comes to their opinions and decisions because he knows how much sheer experience those 2 carry. But during that fight yesterday he was alone, each of his actions couldn't be reassured because he was fighting alone and the actual Pomme wasn't there. He was terrified of making a wrong decision, even with Pierre reassuring him that it wasn't Pomme Etoiles couldn't bring himself to trust his own decision, even with their secret code not working Etoiles couldn't trust himself, even with seeing it carry the codes swords he couldn't trust himself. Even after the fight was over, after he saw Pommes bed with her sleeping tightly in it. He couldn't trust himself. He didn't feel like a winner to himself because his mind went into a spiral about of his decision was right or not, his mind screamed at him because he was sure he had fucked up royally and that's what makes it so interesting. Because Etoiles is a good fighter! And I'm pretty sure with equal gear he'd beat the 2 he holds in high regards to fighting skill a good amount. But he doesn't hold his own decision making very high, he's happy to be as help as a weapon that when he has to make a call he hesitates. And it didn't help that he had his daughters face stare at him while he had to make that important decision because while Phil loves his children just as much as Etoiles does, Phil never had to earn to be trusted with them. Phil's always been someone people trusted with the eggs while Etoiles had to earn his time with Pomme in promising he'll never let her die on his watch and will be careful beyond believe while he's with her.
It shows in the confidence of their decisions, and it's fascinating how much more it shows during these high tension moments. Etoiles is someone who struggles so much with the knowledge of failure and its what made his fight hurt so much more, because he was convinced he'd fucked up bad even after he saw her bed.
Just some food for thought about our codebreakers

Their Favorite Part of You Headcanons (Jotaro Kujo, Noriaki Kakyoin)
ā†³ Reader is written as gender neutral. Itā€™s stated that the Reader goes along with the crusaders on their trip to Egypt (+takes place after the journey as well). Everyone lives AU.
A/n: Wow, I actually posted something! Jokes aside, this summer has been rough so Iā€™ve been trying to take it easy when I can. I missed writing, though, and hope yā€™all enjoy.
Warning(s): Slightly suggestive content.
Tumblr media
Jotaro Kujo
He appreciates your eyes best.
Considering the apparent intimacy that results from direct eye contact, it makes the question an easy one to answer.
In fact, itā€™s highly probable your eyes were what he first noticed about you upon the initial meeting. Whether he has to bend his neck downward or you manage to stand at eye-level, itā€™s a moment heā€™s likely replayed over and over in his mind.
Another reason behind this choice is also a simple one (If you ask Jotaro, at least).
He didnā€™t fall easy and not at all for shallow reasons. Many of his classmates throughout high school would fuss over him seemingly due to his outwardly appearance and reputation. Because he was the ā€œpopular guy to like,ā€ a diverse range of people were noticeably into him.
And taking into account how much he loathed a particular group of girls that would follow him around constantly, his perspective on love doesnā€™t tolerate anything he would deem shallow.
So, in short, what he cherishes most about you tends to be very personal to who you are.
It also plays into his communication preferences. Unsurprisingly, he tends to stare at youļæ½ļæ½. a lot.
It was definitely awkward in the early stages of your platonic-at-the-time relationship.
Throughout the duration of the journey to Egypt, youā€™d lost count of the times youā€™d stand face-to-face without a single word being exchanged. He didnā€™t ever wince or turn away, and you fondly recall the sheer intensity of those moments having kept you perfectly still.
Understanding Jotaro better as an individual- as well as how he feels about you -progressed his stares into something you find to be heartwarming. Just catching him in the act makes your heart leap, and your mind reels with wonder over whatā€™s going through his head.
A little over a year after the aforementioned trip, and a relationship forms. Itā€™s by then that he finds himself okay with getting lost in your lovely ļæ¼irises.
Your light giggle when you finally meet his gaze, flustered and gentleā€¦ itā€™s worth it. He always catches the moment your smile reaches your eyes, slightly creased by upturned lips. Itā€™s a breathtaking sight, having twice now caused a cigarette to fall from his mouth while watching in awe.
His knack for nonverbal communication is pretty much universally understood by the few especially close to him. However, when it comes to you specifically, it reveals a rather bashful approach to the relationship that you might not have expected. It makes sense, as the likelihood of you being his first love is... more accurately labeled a certainty.
Jotaro can be observant after forming a connection with someone. When it comes to you, this is definitely the case. Any excuse to look at you is fine in his book.
However, itā€™s been long-established that heā€™s not exactly chatty, so he responds best to reactions he can see with his own two eyes. And itā€™s in the depth of your pupils that he finds doing so the simplest (If not simple, itā€™s at least selfish given his own bias).
The main aspect of this type of communication involves him looking at you intensely while his body language makes the tiniest adjustments in order to voice whatever heā€™s thinking.
For example, him holding out his palm to you, as his eyes cling to your person, is his way of asking you to hold his hand. He trusts that you know him well enough to get the point. And while you work on decoding his own subtle actions, his gaze never once pulls away from yours.
He simply cannot help it; thereā€™s really something special about your eyes. He searches for your gaze constantly, and lingers for as long as he possibly can. Itā€™s as if heā€™s always seeking your approval, reaction, and attention.
Now, as the relationship turns serious, he prefers to keep his eyes locked on you whenever he can. Once the two of you start becoming intimate, itā€™s quickly apparent he likes positions where he can keep his face close to your own. Or at the very least, hold eye contact.
Jotaroā€™s shockingly passionate, holding your hand in his own while he directs his hips accordingly. Lips slightly parted and gaze locked onto yours without fault. The emotion radiating from him is nothing short of immovable devotion.
Noriaki Kakyoin
Asking him this question yourself garners a flushed appearance and a hasty answer. Heā€™ll stutter, telling you itā€™s your voice that he likes best. From the way itā€™s delivered you wouldnā€™t be able to tell if heā€™s practiced his response in advance or simply grasping at straws. Still, itā€™s an adorable sight and your quite pleased with his reply. Seeing your reaction, Kakyoin would feel a hint of shame.
Because he would be lying though his teeth.
He wouldnā€™t dare admit it initially, least of all to you, but he loves the sight of your legs.
Perhaps you tend to have them exposed. If thatā€™s the case, heā€™s ashamed that he noticed such a thing so early on. A lump made its home in his throat that day, halting his words and making his mind run wild.
Or alternatively, you may mainly keep them hidden. Whatever it was that first prompted you revealing your bare legs- a couple hours at a hotel pool possibly -he undoubtedly finds himself sneaking more glances in your direction than usual.
Itā€™s going to take him a bit to mentally process this.
Even in itā€™s more innocent connotations, he cannot help growing flustered. He just canā€™t help but find it a bit risquĆ©. Although not exactly self-prescribed, despite his occasional arrogance, Kakyoin is certainly the gentleman type. Far from the kind of guy to be caught eyeing up someoneā€™s legs in any shape or form.
That being said, the closer you become, the more difficult avoiding it gets. He focuses so much of his energy on not even glancing at your legs that he does, in fact, notice them quite often.
It doesnā€™t help being stuck in a car for hours on end right next to you. Thighs brushed against one another by sheer circumstance. It didnā€™t matter how many times it occurred throughout the trip to Egypt, he would think about it afterwards each time.
And it took only one sly comment from Polnareff or Mr. Joestar to prompt a myriad of fierce denials from the redhead. Theyā€™d egg him on, speaking a bit too loudly about how heā€™s ā€œchecking you out.ā€ His cheeks would turn fiercely pink while rushing out a defense, which did not do much to help his case.
Eventually, the journey reaches its end. The group inevitably dissolves, but the two of you remain very close after the fact.
By then, your feelings for one another are certainly apparent. Itā€™s hard for you to deny it when the excuse of looming danger is no longer present, and in turn he couldnā€™t imagine any other reason as to why you clung so close to him during his recovery period.
And even after becoming an official couple, understanding how to express his affection is met with bashfulness and hesitancy. If youā€™re inexperienced like him, itā€™ll likely be comforting for you. If you arenā€™t, it probably comes off as endearing.
Yes, you both have explicitly admitted to each other how you feel. Will Kakyoin still keep himself from eyeing you in any way? Absolutely.
A discussion will likely need to be had between the both of you before he loosens up a bit. A clear omission that you like him looking at you will help put his mind at ease (Manā€™s so smitten he feels guilty noticing that your beautiful god bless him).
Once he grows used to the relationship and starts showing just how touch-starved he is, the favoritism he holds for your legs finally becomes clear to you.
Heā€™ll snuggle between your legs while he games, perfectly content within your hold. Even if you fall asleep, he doesnā€™t necessarily mind.
A lot of the clothes he buys for you leaves your legs exposed. The expression of awe he has whenever you wear something heā€™s bought is special to that occasion only. A strange mix of adoration and pride.
You also start catching him on his stares. Teasing him over it is a sure way for you earn a blush, as well as a weak comeback. However, the smile adorning his features exposes fondness. Only youā€™re allowed to say anything, though.
As intimacy blooms, he gladly indulges himself more. It strengthens his confidence in his actions, and turns the tides. Moving frustratingly slow, he glances up at you after leaving an array of kisses and bites up your inner thighs. All while heā€™s mumbling sweet nothings, pure honey oozing from his hushed tone.
Of course, he adores everything about you. But thereā€™s a certain vigor in his actions when he continues moving upward thatā€™s hard to miss.

ok, well. if last time i talked about parallels between near & light, i guess itā€™s only fair that this time i talk about parallels between mello & misa. yap central on this blog lately.
the main thing that stands out the most about mello & misa, and the reason why i will forever Defend them and their place in the story, is that in my mind they both function in a similar way on a narrative level: namely, both of them are incredibly active wild-card characters that keep the action going and the story moving forward when the other main characters like light, L, & near start getting too passive.
notably, while i often see this trait praised in mello, usually in the context of a comparative criticism of near for his overly-abundant passivity, i have also seen it used as a criticism of misa's character, that she breaks up the status quo of DN too significantly and thereby makes the story feel less realistic. this last point in particular is an odd argument to make imo, as if anything misa's presence only increases the realism of DN by adding some extra luck/random chance into the story in a way that is ultimately still character-motivated and thus easier for the audience to go along with-- something DN in general is very good at, often introducing elements through pure chance but keeping them grounded in characters enough that you almost don't even notice.
take light meeting naomi misora, for example: the only reason he runs across her at all is because he offers to run an errand for his mom on a bored laundry day, literally stumbling across her right at the exact moment she is divulging important insights she is literally the only person capable of making about kira. yet this moment does not stand out as particularly aggravating or out of place in the story, as ultimately the only reason why light is able to get out of that situation is his own quick thinking and ability to calm himself while under immense pressure, squeezing his way out of a potentially run-ending situation he didn't even know existed moments prior.
(not a fan of that big joel video, if you couldn't tell. lmao.)
point is, mello & misa both fulfill about the same narrative function in the story by being so aggressive in their actions, catching the others off guard even if their plans aren't as well thought out or careful as they could otherwise be. they're both incredibly passionate, dedicated characters as well, tough enough to take the hit when it inevitably comes, and in my opinion neither of them are nearly as stupid as the other MCs like to make them out to be. to some degree, i think both of them are aware of the fact that they can't win at the Mind Game Cold War Bullshit the others are inclined to get involved in, so they instead choose to carve out their own place in the story through sheer perseverance alone.
which, speaking of passion: one of the most interesting parallels i think you can make between mello & misa is the ways in which they idolize their respective heroes, misa's obviously being light while mello's is L. allow me to elaborate.
as this post points out, DN has some very interesting use of its religious imagery & theming, and in particular its use of christian/catholic gothic imagery in its story and especially its art. however, as op notes, a lot of this is quite superficial, ascribing to an aesthetic of "kitschy Catholicism," that was characteristic of a lot of early 2000s japanese goth style. yet, while i admit that a more serious consideration of religious elements in the art & story could add some interesting flavor to the story, i also think that, regardless of intention, the superficiality of DN's religious elements works really well in the context of this particular story. as i stated in my tags on that post: light is a superficial god. he is a fake, a scam, some idiot human that stumbled across the powers of a real shinigami and got his head up his ass about it. and a lot of the arcs of other characters in DN is about their reaction to light's claims-- whether they choose to follow him (e.g. misa, mikami), follow somebody else (e.g. mello), or follow nobody at all (e.g. near, also kinda soichiro?), and the implications that has for their lives and personalities.
this is all to say that while you can, on a surface level, connect misa & mello pretty easily as the two aggressive, fashionable blondes of the series, i also think that these somewhat superficial traits betray a greater connection between the two of them. if we understand the christian/catholic elements of misa & mello's fashion as a demonstration of their connection to not just a higher power but a lie, a superficial deity simply reflecting the sunlight of powers greater than himself, then i think we have great insight into another key element of both their characters.
do not forget: in the world of DN, heaven & hell do not exist. at least in the context of death itself, the realm & lore of the shinigami reign supreme, a point which the DN musical makes even more overt: "Isn't it a laugh? / Isn't it a shame? / Thinking there is someone in heaven to blame?" and "Going through the motions / as if there will be a reward / Oh, while we stay eternally bored!" (BEST SONGGG.) everyone is destined for the same fate of MU, the same void of nothingness awaits all. no reward, no punishment, no greater deity looking down upon us than the bored, slothful shinigami, lazing about in their realm and picking people off only when necessary (for the most part).
misa & mello are thus dedicating themselves to false idols, and we can see the negative effects this has on them in almost every facet of their character-- particularly for mello, who is perhaps more self-aware and has more of a mixed emotional outlook on his idol, but maybe even to a more extreme degree for misa. i keep going back to this idea of equating boredom with depression in DN, but where light/L/near are all "bored" in a very quiet, passive, stewing-in-bed late at night kinda way, misa & mello are characteristically a lot more aggressive and intense about it-- while neither of them are super overtly suicidal, necessarily, their actions still betray a distinct lack of care for their own safety or lives, expressing the same thematic sentiment as the others. even if they still don't straight up say it, through their actions they're a lot louder about not liking themselves, and seem to take the problems they see in the world more personally, shouldering the blame as a failure within themselves instead of projecting it outward like the others: e.g. light taking his unhappiness at the emptiness of his life at the start of the story & placing the blame on the world for "going to shit" & humanity's moral failings, versus misa being willing to literally & figuratively give up her life for KIRA the second he demands it, whether that be in the form of shinigami eyes or killing her own friends w/o second thought-- all because he was the only thing to bring justice to her own parents' deaths, an almost undoubtedly traumatizing/horrible experience for her considering how much value she places on KIRA/light afterwards.
to clarify, this is not to say that all of these characters are actually and literally depressed and/or suicidal, though you could certainly make that argument for some/all of them-- this is just one way that i think you could interpret their roles in the plot, and their thematic attachment to the story. even if DN isn't all that interested in considering the True Moral Answer to ethics/the justice system/human society/etc, it definitely takes at least some interest in the emotional viewpoints of characters in relation to those concepts, so i think this is a fair enough approach to take. or to say this another way, it's less about justifying the claim that "the world is shit," and more about trying to understand the emotional motivation & experience of feeling like the world is shit, if that makes sense.
that being said...speaking more on the whole "not liking themselves," thing: even if she doesn't say it aloud often, if ever, i think that misa is deeply aware of the fact that she was not supposed to live this long, that her existence at all is a pure stroke of luck that let her live on past her destined date. she dedicates herself to light so fully, not even necessarily expecting reciprocation (though she at least reserves herself the possibility of such), because being a disciple to her god at least gives her life some kind of purpose. similarly, i think mello is also aware of just how out of reach the one thing he wants is, how his desperation in and of itself is ironically the one thing keeping him from surpassing near and truly being #1. it's important to note that pre-time skip misa & post-skip mello are almost exactly the same age, around 20 years old at the time of their main arcs. they're immature, and in the case of mello especially, are lashing out at the world in whatever way they can because they know they don't quite fit into it in the way that they want to or should. regardless of the intent behind it, mello & misa both still make the conscious decision to kill with the DN-- perhaps in a way that still keeps their humanity, at least following near's logic, but it's a decision to end a human life either way.
anyways, going back to my previous point, this "worshiping of false idols," idea has some interesting implications-- for misa & mello yes, but also for L and the ways in which he contrasts again light, as under this logic mello's treatment kind of inherently gives L a similar status as a sort of false god/idol. which-- actually makes a lot of sense? or at the very least, viewing wammy's house as a kind of mystery cult a la the eleusinian mysteries is a neat approach to take. L & light's mutual alienation from humanity fits them both filling a false god status, anyway. also there's another thread of analysis you could follow here where near is instead fit into the role of the person mello is fixated on which AAAAAAAAA has interesting implications but jesus fucking christ, this post is long. some thoughts for another time, i suppose.

What Genshin Guys Are Like In Bed (NSFW)
These arenā€™t exactly proper smut but please, Minors, donā€™t engage it still has descriptions of sex!
I would be willing to go into a character on a more specific level if anyone would be interested. It of course does not need to be NSFW :D
~~~
Kaeya
Kaeya loves to tease you. So much that he'll act so oblivious, to the point where he makes you literally tell himĀ exactlyĀ what you want him to do to you. He'll sometimes act a little patronising when you get frustrated. Be ready for irritating foreplay before he becomes the one who gets needy. He's so eager to please once that happens
Diluc
Diluc will either be gentle and restrained or completely feral without realising it. He's got a pretty average, maybe slightly low sex drive so it takes a little for him to drift into that sort of mood. That's usually seeing you in all your elegant glory or getting into some sort of altercation with Kaeya or the Abyss. If he's gentle you'll get a huge amount of compliments and praise- his hands will not miss an inch of your skin as he worships it. If he's angry he won't take it out on you with words or any sort of degradation. Most of the time his actions become harsher- his thrusts get faster and harsher, and he might even leave fingerprint bruises on your hips if it was a particularly stressful day.
Venti
Venti can be pretty insatiable- usually at the most inconvenient times. He'll try his luck anywhere he can get away with. That includes but is not limited to: the top branches of the tree at Windrise, the huge statue of him in Mondstadt, and the vineyard at Dawn Winery. He's showy if you're into it. He's sort of playful about it, he'll be giggling and grinning while you bothĀ tryĀ to stay quiet.
Albedo
Albedo has a very low sex drive, so I feel he'd only ever be in the mood if you bring it up. He's also very curious about what things you like the most. He intends to explore every part of your body to see how it works. He remembers all of these places too so that he knows how to better satisfy you. One of his favourites is just having you on his lap while he works in Dragonspine because it keeps you both warm and unites you both in a way he absolutely cannot get enough of.
Xiao
Xiao seems like the type to accidentally break the bed during sex. Not because he's rough but because he's gripping the headboard to keep himself from hurting you. He tries to be gentle with you but it doesn't always work and sometimes he ends up losing the battle and wakes up tangled in the sheets with your hips and neck covered in bruises and hickeys.
Tartaglia
Childe treats every moment with you like it could be his last (Because he knows it might be). He's fervent, unrelenting and frantic like a teenager, complimenting you with everything he can think of. Childe breaks the bed from sheer overuse and thinks of it as an achievement. He also gets very cuddly after sex so dont hope to leave his arms for a couple of hours.Ā Ā
Zhongli
Zhongli always exhibits a great amount of control over himself. He's gentle and soft with you. It's romantic when he towers over you and tells you everything he thinks of you because undoubtedly it will be something wonderful. He likes to hold your hands above your head, intertwining them as he intertwines you. He also carries you to the bath each and every time.
Kaedehara Kazuha
Kazuha treats every moment with you like it's poetry. He needs to take his time and memorise each part of you. He admires you, and savours you like a windchime in a hurricane. Sex with Kazuha doesn't seem as much a sexual act as it does a romantic and sensual, uniting one. When he feels you, he doesn't only receive sexual pleasure but also soulful pleasure that spreads between you both.
Thoma
Thoma is someone who is just so happy and grateful to have you do this sort of thing for and/or with him. He genuinely cannot think of anything but you during those moments. I imagine a constant stream of praise and thank you's spilling out of his mouth during any sort of activity you do for him. His whole body heats up too and if he isn't careful he could burn you by accident.
Arrataki Itto
Itto's already pretty empty head goes completely blank during that. He doesn't say anything but groans and mumble swears under his breath as he fucks you. He's another boy whos likely to break the bed from pure brute force. He thinks that's really amusing actually.
Gorou
Gorou tends to overthink this type of thing. He wants to make sure that you are comfortable. He always tells you a safeword in case, and he never concerns his own please until he's gone down on you. He needs to be absolutely sure that he's pleased you before he can help himself to you. Thatā€™s especially hard since he gets worked up easily. He really tries to make it special for you both during those moments because you donā€™t always have a lot of time to do them.
Kamisato Ayato
He can get wrapped up in his work and forget about his needs so sometimes you might need to come to him. He's someone I think would enjoy cockwarming like Albedo because he can do that and do his paperwork.
Tighnari
Tighnari gets oddly flustered at the moment and actually ends up rambling unless you stop him. He's quite nervous so try to guide him through it. It's a little ironic since I imagine him having a pretty normal, maybe even kinda high sex drive. If he gets too needy you guys might even go at it in the forest, but he'll be a little anxious about being found before losing it completely
Cyno
He isn't mean but he's stern. He likes to be in charge and won't leave a bratty S/O unpunished. It's not anything actually bad. He's likely to edge you until you apologise. He wouldn't break the bed but that might be because he's more fond of taking you against a wall
Scaramouche
Oh, he is so bratty. He would probably call you teasing names and pick on you for how needy you look when he edges you. He's mean during it but he gets surprisingly gentle in the aftermath. He won't mention it but he'll run you a bath and make you a drink. He'd prefer it if you never brought it up.
It is true that many characters demonstrated inherited prejudices towards werewolves and Snape wouldnā€™t be too different - but I do find it a bit disappointing for people to think that systematically stalking someone with the intention of ousting them is a knee-jerk reaction coming from a generalised societal prejudice. Maybe itā€™s trying to over justify and defend Snapeā€™s actions, which to me were more motivated by his hatred of the Marauders, and later, fear and trauma of being exposed to a transformed werewolf?
We can bring up Molly, but we can also bring up people like Hermione, Harry, and Dean Thomas. Hermione worked out his secret and didnā€™t feel the need to freak out and expose him. Dean Thomas leaned later he had been taught by a werewolf and quickly and unprompted jumped to defend him in front of Umbridge. Harry immediately felt sympathy when confronted with the reality of Lupinā€™s condition, even when exposed to its scary and dangerous side. Even Ron, who had what Iā€™d call a knee-jerk reaction, got over himself pretty quickly.
Itā€™s just a bit wet to be like ā€œwell everyone was shit about it, so Snape is forgiven for being shit about itā€. Not everyone was shit about it.
Does it make Snape look better to think that most students would be outraged to find out thereā€™s a werewolf amongst them? I like to think some students, if they worked out, much like Harry and Hermione would see the person first and not get super weird about it.
I think you are severely underestimating the level of bigotry the Wizarding World has against werewolves - as well as the social climate at the time the Marauders were at school.
What you suggests breaks Remus' character in terms of the choices he makes, the sheer weight of his friends keeping his secret, Dumbledores actions to support him (and the implications of Severus' unwilling but dedicated silence for 18 years)... and are missing the point of why SPECIFICALLY Harry, Hermione and Dean are the ones most defensive and supportive of Remus.
It's not me trying to justify Severus' actions. I don't need to justify Severus, he can be a petty little ass. (Though the trust breaking of him finding out Dumbledore is protecting a werewolf makes the "fuck yall 'good guys' I'm going all in on rebuilding wizarding society" element of his character enriched.)
It's me spending WAY too long combing through the books to intricately understand REMUS' situation. It's for HIM - not Severus.
This is all SUPER fresh in my mind because I'm working on a part 7 of a massive, huge, too-big Lycanthropy meta, so uh... I went nuts:
+ Harry, Hermione and Dean were ALL raised by Muggles. No shit they are more accepting and sympathetic, especially when their first interaction with a werewolf is their lovely teacher. They have no cultural point of reference. It wasn't random to make Dean Thomas, of any side-character, stand up for Remus. Not Neville, not Seamus, not Lavender, not the Patil sisters.
Even then - + Hermione felt conflicted in keeping his secret but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Evidently, though, she had read how awful werewolves are and just didn't want to believe it. "he wants you dead too -- he's a werewolf!" "If I'd been a bit cleverer, I'd have told everyone what you are!"
+ Ron reacted with immediate revulsion towards Remus. "Get away from me, werewolf!" He didn't call him Professor, or Lupin, or even just leave it at 'get away from me'... he see's him as an animal. And he only got over it when Remus spent ages explaining himself, his past, his intentions - and proved his rat was a 33yr old man.
+ Harry is one of VERY FEW characters that actually treats Remus as a human being. Who else... Arthur, Albus, Tonks - possibly Dean... + Hermione directly compares his situation to that of House-Elves and says 'Wizards think themselves better than other creatures'. Remus is a Wizard, not a different Being, Beast or Part-Human - he is just disabled. She often accidentally does the exact things she wants to fight against: not listening to the voices of House-Elves and 'othering' werewolves as not-quite-human. ā€œBut you are normal!ā€ said Harry fiercely. ā€œYouā€™ve just got a ā€” a problem ā€”ā€ Even Remus' friends weren't as good as Harry is: + James is flippant with the fact Remus was a werewolf, even when Remus asked him to be careful - and his entire theme is that Harry is a better man than him. + Sirius treated Remus as a point of interest, wishing it was the Full Moon so he didn't have to be bored - regardless of how painful it is for Remus to endure - and at the first sign of there being a mole suspected Remus without proof. + Peter stood with James and Sirius in ignoring Remus' concerns, even when James and Sirius were more openly nasty to him.
+ "...out of bounds, at night, consorting with a werewolf and a murderer..." Snape says to the Minister of Magic, about equal weighting put on 'Murderer' and 'Werewolf'. Even though that 'Werewolf' was Harry's teacher, the fact Harry KEPT consorting with him after finding out he was a werewolf is whats damning. And the Minister just nods his head, agreeing.
+ "Iā€™ve made her an outcast! ... You have only ever seen me amongst the Order, or under Dumbledoreā€™s protection at Hogwarts! You donā€™t know how most of the Wizarding world sees creatures like me! When they know of my affliction, they can barely talk to me!" Remus wasn't being hyperbolic here. It's all true. Tonks IS an outcast now - she had to run from the Ministry. Wizarding society utterly detests werewolves.
+ Even as a little boy his parents had to move house every few months when their neighbours started to notice Remus not being allowed to play with other kids, getting ill on the Full Moons. There was no sympathy even for a 5yr old if he was a 5yr old werewolf. Remus grew up having to run away at the first sign of suspicion. It's sorta shocking how relentless it is in the books - I'm doing a meta on Lycanthropy, here's Part 2 where I go through how society seems to act and how Remus feels
'Does it make Snape look better to think that most students would be outraged to find out thereā€™s a werewolf amongst them?' Better...? He is just correct. It makes him look NORMAL. It makes him look petty and irresponsible, really, that he didn't go to teachers first. But he was a 15/16yr old used to not getting any help. + Even LILY treated accusing Remus of Lycanthropy as a deathly serious accusation. It was terrible and ridiculous to even think of. "I know your theory,ā€ said Lily, and she sounded cold.
Why do you think that more than a small handful of students would not act with prejudice if Remus was exposed as a werewolf...? Even if students and staff stood beside Remus, as they had known him for years - why that would matter in the face of Parents, General Society and Ministry persecution?
Especially during the dawn of the First Wizarding War???
Fenrir Greyback, the most savage werewolf alive, was biting CHILDREN to amass an army in the Death Eaters service. Death Eaters were on the rise, getting more violent. Secretive - nobody knew who they were, where they had infiltrated. Casting the Dark mark over peoples houses when they had killed their families. Getting Giants to kill more Muggles than in any point in history. Armies of inferi - dead family, friends and muggles they murdered being reanimated to fight the living... One of them, one of Greybacks children - is in HOGWARTS. One of the safest places in the Wizarding World is compromised. That's how it would be seen! That's essentially how it was seen even 13 years later - being outed to the public destroyed Remus.
...We, as readers, know more about werewolves than general Wizarding society does. Especially Wizarding children who only get some lessons on how dangerous they are and how to kill them.
+ If you listen to Pottermore, which fair enough if you don't - there are books published such as Prof. Emerett Picardy's 'Lupine Lawlessness: Why Lycanthropes Don't Deserve to Live', which state things such as 'werewolves permanently lack moral sense'. Misinformation is rampant. Murdering werewolves is acceptable. When werewolf-sympathetic books are published its done so with anonymous authors because they fear backlash.
You might 'like to think that students who found out wouldn't get super weirded out by it'. But I just don't think that's realistic. And even if there was a massive Hogwarts-wide cultural shift in the perception of werewolves just because Remus was 'a pretty nice lad' - it would mean little. We SEE it meaning little: Everyone likes Remus as a teacher and it meant jack shit. Werewolves were in a worse position socially, not a better one, after Remus was a teacher.
I know you said it felt too depressing, but that Luz school post was actually a lovely breakdown of how school can hurt neurodivergent kids even when their peers and surrounding adults do everything "right." So, thank you.
the post in question
well, thank you for this ask! i was able to go into such detail about luz's accommodations and the administrative help because it was semi-autobiographical. there were several ways my own school admin & some teachers failed me that i'm not gonna give her because it would make me Too Fucking Sad, but there were also a lot of adults who genuinely wanted to help. and kids who would ask me to sit with them at lunch without it feeling like a pity thing. and written plans of Support.
having school admins who are willing to follow a 504 plan and a mother who's willing to threaten legal action if you don't get accommodations is an Enormous privilege. plenty of kids don't have that. but i want luz to have that! and given the sheer level of trauma she's experienced, she's definitely in a position to have adults be kind to her. a lot kinder than they were to her canon self! she has Good Reasons to be weird and maladjusted. you know, not just a dead dad she should be over by now :/
even with people giving me the benefit of the doubt, though, i was A Problem Student. i stayed home when i could and whenever i HAD to go to school, i'd skip class to sit in the bathrooms. i'd have very public sobbing panic attacks in the hallways. i remember at one point i went to math class and one of my peers was like, "whoa, hey!! i thought you dropped out!!" because it had been That Long since i'd actually set foot in the classroom. i never did my homework and i never took good notes. my biggest memory of actually being in high school classrooms is just a loud buzzing whine covering up everything the teacher was saying while i stared at the clock tapping my pencil and counting down the minutes until i could bolt.
AU luz would not skip class. because AU luz is trying to Endure It (TM) for camila's sake. and she thinks there's something wrong with her that's making her bad at everything. surely the classroom environment itself is not torture!
anyway. it was good for me to skip my classes and good for me to make life a Fucking Nightmare for my parents and good for me to drop out and good for me to finish online with a much easier curriculum. there was never any scenario in which Sitting In A Classroom was EVER going to be okay for me, let alone actually HELP me learn.
the self-advocacy got me in a lot of trouble and got me pretty badly hurt, since it's legal to do basically whatever to minors who don't Cooperate (TM). and it made life difficult for other people, too. but it also did ultimately protect me.
sometimes school just sucks. and it can be pretty isolating to constantly hear from people for whom classrooms are Not physical torture, so. i try to be open about my Feelings. fjsjdj
@sockdooe I first encountered this supposed explanation in the comments section of a fanfiction, so it is to be taken with a grain of salt, but I read that Shiro's design was primarily based on what the showrunners thought "looked cool". This includes the prosthetic grafted onto his person by his captors, the scar across his face, and the shock of white fringe in his otherwise naturally dark hair. And, I won't lie, his design serves its purpose. Shiro immediately draws the eye, and not just because of his usual placement front and center in the standard team line up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's reasonable for the sort of space soldier, G.I. Joe type of character the staff intended Shiro to be to have these sorts of physical characteristics.
It's also completely reasonable in a Sci-Fi/Action show for a villain as menacing and ruthless as Sendak to have a similarly distinct, eye-catching design. Such features as a sinister, gleaming, red bionic eye, and massive prosthetic arm powered by a core of glowing, magical electric energy pulsing in a line from shoulder to forearm stand out, are easily memorable, and make him instantly recognizable as a really Bad Guy.
The idea of Shiro being a sort of "light, heroic mirror" to Sendak, which the show introduced and continued to attempt to enforce all the way up to Sendak's death, sits incredibly uneasily with me, however. As I've made explicit several times, before.
Content Warning for discussion of sexual assault/rape.
We're shown the recurrent imagery of Sendak looming over and behind an incapacitated Shiro.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shiro's instinctive response to seeing Sendak heading toward him is to back away out of fear before steeling himself and resolving to fight, if only to protect the Castle and an unconscious Lance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The very first thing that Shiro says to Sendak is, "You're not getting in", to which Sendak replies, "Yes. I am".
Coran suggests that the Galra might keep him and Hunk as, "some sort of creepy pet to play with how they please", in an appeal to Shay and Rax for assistance concealing their presence on the Balmera.
There's genuine contempt in Shiro's voice when he asks Sendak, "What do you want?", prior to his torture at Sendak's hands.
Sendak delivers a stomach-churning gloating little speech after torturing Shiro via electric shock.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, Rolo refers to Sendak as a, "real nasty bugger", a term that has an exceptionally crude colloquial meaning.
Tumblr media
Now, maybe I'm a cynical weirdo who is reading far too deeply into this, and connecting dots that aren't there. But...
Shiro bears a much stronger resemblance to Berserk's Guts than the Takashi Shirogane from the original Go Lion! that he's named after. Guts is a famous survivor of childhood sexual abuse, having been sold by his adoptive father and purchased for use as a sex slave by an ugly hulking pederast.
There were obvious Neon Genesis Evangelion fans working on this show, and Rei Ayanami, the character that Shiro's story seems to reference with the sheer excess of clones created using his DNA, is also a victim of sexual abuse.
(There's even, arguably, influence taken from The Legend of the Blue Wolves, a relatively obscure yaoi OVA largely set at a military facility which trains soldiers and pilots for combat missions in deep space. It features an extended scene with a virtual flight simulator, and one of the two male leads is-- wouldn't you know it? Raped by an ugly hulking monster.)
Correlation does not imply causation, and perhaps the similarities are entirely superficial, and we're not meant to think too hard about them.
Yet, with the amount of scrutiny that a series as utterly wholesome and innocuous as Bluey is constantly under, I cannot buy for a minute that a series Netflix gave a TV Y7 rating to didn't undergo some level of screening to ensure that its content was appropriate for the intended child audience. Someone had to have asked the staff if bugger was the term they meant to use, aware of the disturbing, far less than child-friendly implications, and was met with a resounding confirmation.
Beyond that, extended proximity to even an imprisoned and inanimate Sendak sends Shiro spiraling into a psychological break down.
Tumblr media
Shiro's intensely traumatic experiences in captivity, which his brain seems to have largely repressed in order to protect him ("It's all a blur.") would, by themselves, be enough to convince him that he's been broken and reshaped into something monstrous. His bodily autonomy was, unquestionably, brutally violated, and his innately altruistic, self-sacrificing nature was violently challenged when he was forced to kill or be killed for his captors' entertainment. His right arm was taken from him and replaced with a weapon, and he has the blood of who knows just how many innocents on his hands. He was, indeed, broken down in an attempt to reform him into the Galra Empire's "greatest weapon", and likely very much wars with himself over what he had to do to ensure his own survival, believing himself to be a monster.
What really stands out to me, though, is that this intense, primal terror and the accompanying feelings of "brokenness" and "monstrousness" only surface around Sendak. Despite also being associated with and direct causes of his trauma, neither Haggar nor Zarkon rattle Shiro to his core the way Sendak does.
Tumblr media
Neither of them are insistent on drilling into Shiro's head how "broken" he supposedly is, as Sendak is shown doing over and over again. Including taunting Shiro over the non-consensual modifications to his body.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Harboring a deep sense of shame, and viewing themselves as something dirty, ugly, disgusting, broken, or even monstrous is an experience common among survivors of sexual abuse.
Tumblr media
Having Shiro's physical condition repeatedly mirror his personal tormentor's would be sick and twisted enough.
Adding the context of rape or sexual abuse to Shiro's torment makes the creative decision to intentionally model his arm after his abuser's outright sadistic.
No one deserves to have a constant physical reminder of their abuser and rapist permanently attached to their person. And, attempting to paint Shiro as a "heroic mirror" to Sendak fails entirely when Shiro doesn't so much as get to best Sendak in combat once.
All of the points you've raised about the function and structure of prosthetics are amazing, informative, and highly appreciated. (The comment about Shiro's abominable floating arm looking like it wouldn't be able to support the weight of a grocery bag makes me laugh.) Sadly, there's a faction of the fanbase who are all too quick to fetishize that arm, like everything else surface-level about Shiro. I've seen a number of fics where its ability to be propelled a great distance with a single thought is used to pleasure a partner while Shiro, himself, is in a different room, where the arm is equipped with a vibrating function for use as a sex toy, and, of course, where the thickness of its fingers is sexualized for... the same reason the bulge in the crotch of Shiro's pants is.
Tumblr media
(I beg this fandom to stop reducing this man to a seme stereotype because of his physical build and height. Nothing in his personality suggests that he would be anything even approximating that cursed archetype. Let him be a pillow princess, for God's sake, like he deserves.)
This reply took me forever, and I am sincerely sorry about that. I hope you find something worthwhile in this haphazard collection of thoughts.
And, "Sendick" is how I'm going to be mentally referring to that creep from now on.
SPOILER WARNING FOR WORKIN BOYS, I BREAK DOWN MY FAVOURITE SHOTS. SPOILERS WILL BE HERE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Okay here's my opinion:
Curt being the DP for Workin' boys is the best thing that coulda happened to it. There are so many choices that were made during filming that just absolutely heighten the level of comedy. It's shot like a Mockumentary almost? The shakycam and the randomized movement? As someone who wrote a Mockumentary last year, I can only dream of pulling off a film like this.
A couple things I wanna point out:
-the minuscule push in on Hidgens when he realises he won the workshop competition feels very office-ey.
-the cut back to MK's amused face had me WHEEZING
-the pan over to Paul as be reminds Hidgens to remember the changes
-"apparently a musical about six men bonding on a football field isnt 'of the times..."'etc, this line right here felt like a talking head, I appreciated it.
-those time cards eg: "Rehearsal #2, 28 days until opening" lent itself so much to the documentarian feel of it.
-"wow, what an auteur", not a camerawork comment but I appreciate the joke for all of the film and theater theory studiers
-the "rehearsal montage" I love a good meta joke.
-even in this montage, the camera is never really onstage. At all. Like, it's always situated off to the side or in the audience, and then zoomed in, the documentarian is trying to capture all of the action on stage instead of trying to make us feel immersed in the rehearsal process. We're not really aligned with any of the characters, we're an audience, and we better stay that way. For our own sake.
-and then this dynamic totally changes, and shifts away from the mockumentary feel
-but I'll get to that in a second
-henry is almost always by himself in the shot. I think the one of the only other times that the entirety of another character's face is seen alongside Henry's (I mean, both faces are CLEAR and uncovered in the shot) is in the two shot of him and Paul's stage manager in the rehearsal montage. He is totally singular in his experiences with this show! He is not one of these girls, if anything he is opposed to them. And this becomes clearer later, but it's a nice seed to sow, establishing that he is not in a collaborative mindset at all. The only other time I can think of is him and Zoey behind the curtain, even then, the only time both of their faces are actually IN the shot is when they're behind all the workin' girls. There's probably more but ykwim.
-also the sheer number of times that Henry is off centre in the shot with just a bunch of space surrounding him.
-okay after "two week notice" or whatever tf that song is called (Kim sounds amazing as always) is when the style shifts. It feels less like a mockumentary and more like this sort of voyeuristic peek into Henry's psyche. I LOVE IT.
-the fact that he is never shown in the shot with the workin' boys! It makes you absolutely feel like he is just talking to the air around him (this is hatchetfield so who knows, either way its unsettling)
-we get aligned with ruth, for the first time, we see the audience from the perspective of a character, not just from a stage POV
-the camera roll!! We don't get a full rotation but we feel dizzy and unsettled when we look at ruth, which is exactly how she feels!
-camera roll close up on Zoey. Uncomfortable, unsettling! Rests in a canted angle before continuing to roll on Hidgens! Who is centered in a low angle shot! We don't see the axe until he brings it up to his face! He is not only in a position of power here, but revealing the axe only when Henry makes it clear he is gonna kill them makes it clear that he calls the shots! We've departed from the Mockumentary style completely, as if this was never a documentary to begin with, more like we're flies on the wall or spirits in the theater or omniscient eldritch beings... anyway-
-long shot of Henry dragging zoey's body, no footage of them being killed, aligns us with the audience
-our friend the camera is getting shakey again, the chaos is in the process of ensueing
-THE PULL OUT SHOT OF GRACE WITH THE GUN. I GASPED. I KNEW IT WAS GONNA HAPPEN AND I GASPED. Fun fact on my first watch I thought this was a dolly shot but I dont think y'all are fitting a dolly on the Hudson theater main stage steps, and also the distance is too short so it must have been a pull out. It was REALLY SMOOTH.
-notice, when grace quotes the bible, we are EVER SO SLIGHTLY looking up at her. It gets progressively more obvious the further she gets into the line, but she has the power now. Somehow she always ends up with the fuckin' power, maybe I should convert to christianity smh.
-shakeycam is back again baby!
The creative minds put so much love and care into Hatchetfield, and you can tell that every project is a passion project. People know starkid primarily as a theater company, and that's great and all, but in reality it's an Avenue for all kind of creatives to not only have the opportunity to create all kinds of amazing things, let alone theater, but also have a way to show people. It's moved past being a theater company, with things like Starkid returns and Workin' boys, it's more like a production collective, and it feels like the beginning of a new era. Not only in terms of broadening the way that they Express themselves and be creative, but also in terms of finding a new niche in the industry. Finding a new, wider audience. Because yeah, you're always gonna have people that dislike the new media you produce, for nostalgia's sake or whatever, but beyond that, there are going to be be people that absolutely love what you have to offer. There's no point in trying to revert back to the way it was before, or trying to cater specifically to an audience from an era gone by. How do you grow as an artist if you're always thinking in the past? Starkid is moving in a new direction. The next musical is likely not going to be hatchetfield, but I dont even mind because it's going to be new. New is always good, and Starkid has a bright future.
TL;DR @curtmega you're a literal genius, and starkid is TOTALLY AWESOME
Impossible Orange ~Out O' Range~ Is the best version of one of my favorite songs in ZeroRanger!
TLDR: This arrangement combines the two major thematic elements of the original song in such a way that keeps them distinct but also further melds them together! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now for starters if you haven't played ZeroRanger before, (please do its like $12 on itch and steam and if you've participated in a few itch bundles its likely the game was included in it. And id argue its the best starter game for the bullet hell/shmup genre) this wont really cover any major spoilers but id still consider it a spoiler since its a shift in difficulty and tone for the game
I want to give credit to the composers of these tracks
eebrozgi for the original track and Tee-vee for the arranged version of Impossible Orange
(also preemptive when i mean "you" I'm speaking as in "you the player")
Ok so the original track in the game "Impossible Orange" plays after right before the end of level 3, its the second boss track of the level and acts as a sort of true introduction to the mecha form your Ranger can take. As a refresher or a showcase here's this part of the game in action (including sequence for when you are introduced to the game's mecha form) link here
The sequence is all bombastic and striking at first that whole anime moment of pushing through and fighting back with great intensity Break the Unbreakable as they say (I haven't watched guran lagann i'm just very aware this game makes references to it and other mecha anime).
Though it starts to slow down once you really get to the meat of the boss, while pretty easy its meant to convey the sheer size and force of Green Orange's fleet, an almost immense force that you may not be able to break through the game is telling you that this is where the first difficulty spike hits which is very much true. Stage 4 is 3 short stages in a trench coat of difficulty, a sprint as you fight your way to the center of the fleet. (which is also accompanied by amazing music like legit i cannot listen to "4th gear" without listening to "Unstopping" right after)
Though when I first listened to Impossible Orange outside of the game in full there's a section of it that most players likely would have heard when normally playing the game, the only real way you'd hear it is if you were being very slow at the fight. link here (the specific part im talking about starts at around 1:29 if you wanna skip to it)
It keeps up this oppressing tone until suddenly, it gets this funky backing beat to it, and then it sorta brings back that sorta confident tone to it, while odd I think this could be seen as the character (the even the player) still pushing despite these Impossible odds.
NOW FOR THE ARRANGED ALBUM VERSION
and also a very biased account of my expectations as i fist listened to this
LINK HERE A ominous start, the looming presence of the impossible orange fleet deciding to bring in the oppressive tone first. Before kicking in that fucking strong guitar lead going right into that anime fuck yeah sorta feel and then it just keeps going with it, almost throwing me for a loop that it was going to be the entire song, I was hyped. But then it reels it back bringing the ominous tone continuing to speed up the pacing of the song as if the character was trying to push back against the force before going fully into the impossible side of the song.
It then ramps it back up bringing back the guitars for the much more funky beat letting the guitars be the lead of both the themes plastered in this beautiful track before then pushing forward with a final play of that heroic motif from the start coupled with that amazing synth accompanying the lead.
Its incredible and I love it
Thank you for listening to my nerdy rant <3
Really normal length Skoodge analysis
Gonna just start with the simple things. Things you can get from watching one time alone. Maybe. Probably not I don't think you people think about him enough to gather any of this. No. I'm sorry I love you all. I'm just a specific level of detached from average not-Skoodge viewers and don't know what all is expected. It's that one meme "Even when compensating, experts in any field will overestimate the average person's knowledge."
It's rough. Let's get into it.
Speech is probably an easy one! Yeah? Yeah.
A lot of the things he says are very literal... there's a lot of tacting things that are currently happening. A lot of stating the obvious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Admittedly... this is probably a byproduct of him not being a "main character." His dialogue is a lot less important than that of characters like Zim and Dib. But it's still worth talking about! I'd like to think it's genuinely just his personality to be obvious and talk about things as if people aren't already aware of them. Maybe even have him be a bit tone-deaf. That's more headcanon territory though! So let's walk on past that before I confuse myself and all of you.
DOUBLE NEGATIVES...!
... only happen once. In the background. While he's being talked over by a bunch of teammates.
Tumblr media
("Yeah; really that's actually good and more logical cause I don't really wanna make a chain or nothing like that.")
His speech is a lot more casual and, in transcripts for unfinished episode(s)(?) almost innocent!
Tumblr media
frothing at the mouth at this one actually i dont like it. not good. this is just exposition. he would not fucking say that (probably wrong) (this was written by the shows writers) (it still makes me angry)
Tumblr media
This one I just wanted to add because it's silly. Look at how silly he is. He's just a fun loving guy. Why does his mind go to dancing straight away? We'll never know... the inner machinations of his mind are an enigma.
Tumblr media
Skoodge reads as... more impulsive than anything (and maybe a little anxiety-riddled but that might also just be me projecting). He doesn't strike me as a critical thinker who really tries to like... weigh the consequences of his actions. He just does shit and when it doesn't work out he does more. I imagine that's what most irkens are like, actually, now that I think about it...
His gut instinct must be controlling him because if it isn't then I honestly can't find any good explanation as to how he's survived for so long.
Which perfectly segways me into something a little more analyzing-like:
Skoodge is a cockroach.
Tumblr media
He got shot out of a cannon and still comes back to the Empire. He... really does seem to believe that being here will help him out somehow. As if it hasn't already been proven that nothing he will do will satisfy the society he hails from.
Desperation can make you do desperate things; and Skoodge's entire character just reeks of desperation.
Tumblr media
From apparently being considered to eat his own skin (before being deemed too much by the network) [no screenshot available because I don't even know how I'd begin to look for it] to the more canonical screaming-like-a-baby whenever something happens to him, it kinda makes you wonder how the hell he even got to where he is in the first place.
Now, this is more speculation than actual evidence, but I think it's a fair enough bet to say that Skoodge earned his title as an invader. He has no height to propel him forward in society, so whatever he did would've had to've involved sheer tenacity and an inclination for survival.
He is almost definitely, genuinely, afraid of death. And because of that, he just... doesn't die.
I know at an objective view, he doesn't die because it's funnier that way, and helps with jokes and gags, but like... c'mon. This is a deep analysis post. I'm allowed to get a little indulgent with it.
Treading into more theorization-territory here.
Irkens are raging Xenophobes.
Tumblr media
And Zim fits this bill perfectly! He's slotted himself into this mindset without any issue, making up... unique slurs for humans and other things he comes by. Because he tries too hard to be a perfect irken. Maybe. That's a topic for someone that's insane about Zim, not me. This is about my guy.
If Zim is the perfect representation of an irken soldier (on a purely superficial level), then Skoodge is an outlier. Not in that he's good at his job; he's supposed to be! No, rather, his differences lie in his temperance. His composure, whatever you call it. He is far too complacent and even possibly a bit meek, if you wanna go ahead and call him that.
Tumblr media
You see that? That right there is respect for a... honestly almost certainly, by irken standards, inferior species.
Now, this could either mean one of three things.
Either A) Skoodge is not space racist (best case scenario)
or B) Skoodge lacks self-confidence; not seeing himself as superior, and thus being compliant and respectful to the obvious figure of authority in front of him.
or C) Skoodge does not have respect for his Empire (very unlikely, seeing as the only reason he's still here is because he's trying to gain a promotion from said Empire)
Shooting down option A immediately with this dialogue here (Battle Of The Planets)
Tumblr media
Sorry folks... he is very much so still space racist.
As for option B...
I'm going to be completely honest here. I think I've been interpreting this wrong in my series. I have a whole lot of complex reasons explaining why Skoodge doesn't have much confidence, but honestly, he reads as more... chill. And down-to-earth, than he does as self-loathing.
Tumblr media
There is possibly evidence of him having a more quiet and subdued personality, instead of just him not being a xenophobe; and it comes from the very first episode!
Tumblr media
Crying in front of the tallest at the Assigning. Admittedly, Larb cried too; but he at least had enough push in him to say something.
Tumblr media
Skoodge doesn't. He's even disheartened by the Tallest's initial jeering of him! Which admittedly, might not be the best example of low self-esteem, because those are the literal Leaders of his fucking Empire... but it is definitely a shift from him being the proud, confident, short-and-ugly invader that he's shown to be in Battle Of The Planets. Invading Blorch must've really (rightfully) inflated his ego.
Which he normally lacks.
He lacks ego, but that doesn't mean he lacks confidence. He knows that he's good at things in spite of his flaws, and takes pride in it! Even though that pride ends up shooting him in his own foot. Sad.
And why is it that he lacks ego? Every other irken thus far (sans maybe Sizz-lorr) has demonstrated just how... important. It is for them to have one. How almost ingrained into their nature their egos are. Why does Skoodge not go on to boast about his glory when any other irken in his situation would? Again, it's going to be another one of those things that I just can't be too sure about, but I'm going to hazard to say that it's because he's so physically flawed. Short and ugly. (Probably the reason why his uniform is stained. Why put forth the effort to make your uniform look good if it's impossible for the rest of you?)
There is. Almost no doubt in my mind, that he's had to fight tooth and nail to get to where he is, claw his way to the top. And if he's done that, he knows the struggle of being lower? He knows because no matter how high he gets, he'll still always be that "lower"? augh. what the fuck.
Skoodge has been humbled by this because he's been reminded of it at almost every point in his life. He doesn't boast to inferiors because he knows that there is nothing to boast, that he is technically one of those inferiors. Because even despite his successes, someone will always go on to point out his flaws.
Which really brings attention to Battle Of The Planets, to the Tallest pointing out his flaws. He just had his greatest success. Purple gave him one flaw, he gave another. And he gave it proudly.
... SECRET FOURTH OPTION D YEAHHHH BABY!!!!
FAWN RESPONSE.
With his inclination towards survival it would make sense to reason that he's only polite in front of potentially-threatening company because it means that he's less likely to get pummeled for being. Anything else.
Being polite is just as credible a survival technique as anything else! We just don't get to see any other irkens using it.
Skoodge is. Competent. He conquered his planet first!
He's a good invader. And that's probably because he knows when to run.
He's very vocal about it, if he knows (or thinks) that there's someone around to assist him. Silent with his impending doom (ha) at the Assigning, but very very loud when being chased down in the canyon by the hogulus in Hobo 13.
Now, I don't know about you, but irkens don't really strike me as the kind of species to back down from anything. To me, they read as more of a "do it or die" kinda group. Again, this whole trait kiiiinda almost begging to be pegged as outlier. The only thing that makes me on the fence about this one is, again, the fact that it's a cartoon and Skoodge's fear might be for the sake of gags.
Tumblr media
That doesn't really explain this though. He has literally no reason to be scared here. In this specific scenario (Day Of Da Spookies! unfinished episode) he's disguised as a human. Every person there is none the wiser to him and his alien nature. He's just... like this...? All the time? Apparently? Maybe?
Or maybe! There's other things at play here!
Skoodge is competent...
... but.
A friend put it into better words than I could:
His brain turns to mush whenever he's around Zim.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Honestly, the volunteer line might actually add on to his possible lack of self-respect? Hard to say if it's that, or if he's just that desperate to give respect at the sign of any spare bit of authority, even if that authority comes from an irken shorter than him.)
It makes me wonder if most of what we've seen of him is just Zim's influence on him. Scared at the Assigning? He didn't know Zim was there, so that had to have been genuine. Saluting to an inferior species? He had to have known that Zim was there, because Zim introduced himself first (and very loudly at that), but I think it was also genuine because Zim wasn't directly influencing him?
Screaming because of the hogulus and running like a child from some humans? Those are almost definitely Zim's doing. I just. Don't know How.
Screaming is a weakness, I think; at least it should be (in the eyes of irkens), and when Skoodge does it he does it because he seems convinced that Zim will help him. And yet Zim never does! Skoodge has no reason to believe this!
Tumblr media
But still, believe he does.
They had to have been... kind of close? At one point in their lives.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Potentially. I don't know how close a person can get to Zim, but Skoodge has just barely managed to do it, by virtue of the fact that he is quite possibly the only living thing in the universe that can tolerate being around Zim for more than five seconds.
And his cockroach-itude. That definitely helps. You can't be killed by Zim's passive destructive radius if you genuinely just can't fucking die at all.
Tumblr media
But that explains nothing of his weird eagerness to do things for Zim. It borders on obsessive. It might actually be obsessive, since he's apparently been living in Zim's vents ever since the events of Hobo 13. Without telling him.
Skoodge is fucking deranged. Skoodge doesn't even register as a blip on Zim's radar of people-to-acknowledge, but he will still always just do things for him, and be excited to, too!
I don't know what's wrong with him. The less easy and definitely one too many steps detached from canon explanation would be that he views Zim as the ideal irken and strives to be like him. The easiest explanation would be that he just really likes Zim.
Gosh. Even that still raises the question of how or why he would. Zim is fucking terrible to not just him, but everyone. He is unbiased in whose life he ruins.
And Skoodge is perfectly content with just letting Zim ruin his.
man. i hate him. i really really do.
Red
based on @13thdoodle's drawing Day 4: Red Red Green which is based on this prompt from @danphanwritingprompts.
***
For a long, long time the Fenton parents had been the kooks of Amity Park.
But eventually, ghosts became a known quantity. Suddenly it wasnā€™t so crazy to believe in ghosts.
Suddenly, Fenton Defense equipment was actually a hot commodity - whatever their eccentricities, they knew what they were doing when it came to working with ectoplasm.
Unfortunately, the Fentonā€™s also went about shouting theories that were - though it took some time - proven untrue in the eyes of the masses.Ā
All ghosts couldnā€™t be evil, not when the Box Ghost - for all he shouted about doom - would float away happily if given a box as a gift.Ā
Not when the ghost of Sidney Poindexter only ever appeared to cheer up bullied students, and only once in a blue moon - the Fenton boy didnā€™t seem to receive the same courtesy for all that he was the main target given his habit of stepping in and drawing attention to himself to spare other students (perhaps Poindexter just didn't want to make the necessary multiple-times-a-day appearance that it would take).
Not when Phantom did his best to protect them from the ghosts that truly meant them harm - plenty of the older generation might have fallen for the Fentonsā€™ lies after the incident with the mayor and the circus, but plenty were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Still, whatever people thought of their theories on ghostsā€™ behaviors and personalities, when it came to simple ectoplasm and biology it was acknowledged that Jack and Maddie Fenton knew their stuff.
Ghost shields worked just like they said they would, their weapons - while poorly aimed - worked just fine in competent hands, and things like ghosts being made purely of ectoplasm seemed to bear out when the ghosts that Phantom fought would - very rarely, ghosts being so much harder to injure than humans - get a scrape and bleed that same neon green.
(The students of Casper High see even more evidence of this when Manson panics at lunch and lipstick-blasts a blob ghost sheā€™d seen out of the corner of her eye. The spray of gore hadnā€™t appeared to contain anything defined as far as the students could tell through their panic and sadness - thankfully, the blob was able to pull itself back together before zipping away from the incredibly relieved goth.)
And so the facts of life in Amity were thus:
Ghosts are real
Ghosts will attack the city pretty frequently
Phantom will protect Amity from attacking ghosts
Fenton brand ghost equipment is reliable as long as you know exactly what it is meant to do
You will have to ask for details. This is necessary, but you will regret it. Set aside at least 4 hours.
It is best to avoid unknown ghosts until proven safe (either because they are friendly or because they are a Box Ghost level threat).
Ghosts bleed green
And, finally:
7. Despite the number of fights he has been in, whether by skill or sheer dumb luck, Danny Phantom has never bled.
No one ever thought about it, ever wondered.
And why would they? Danny Phantom is dead, and the dead bleed green. No one has to wonder when they already know the answer.
Until the day that Skulker and Technus team up.Ā
Technus is already captured by the time the cheering crowd appears - familiar enough with Phantom v Skulker fights to see that it is coming to a close and willing to take the newly-decreased risk to get a closer look at their hero in action.
Phantom is already aiming the thermos at a heavily-damaged Skulker when he throws one of he and Technusā€™ collaborative weapons in a last-ditch effort to escape.
Phantom dodges lower to the ground - the round looks like a net-projectile, he thinks, it should just pass over-head.
It was meant to be an area-of-effect taser. Not that anyone can tell when the haphazardly-assembled device explodes over Phantomā€™s head just as Skulker is sucked into the thermos.
The crowd screams and reshuffles just out of the way of where Phantom plummets to the ground - they know he can tank a crash, but the explosion is new and worrying.Ā
The bit of dust clears to Phantom sitting up and holding his head, eyes closed as he groans.Ā
And then his hand pulls away, and all anyone can focus on is the red, red liquid dripping down his pale face and smeared across his white, white glove and the edge of his hairline.
He stares at his glove, face slack in something like disbelief while the trail of blood curves over his cheek to trail towards his chin and the crowd whispers around him.Ā
The dead bleed green, the living bleed red.Ā
Humans bleed red.
And
Is Phantom alive?
At the last, he jolts to attention, slapping on something that is as much a grimace as it is a grin.
ā€œWhaaa-aat? Noooo. This is just paint.ā€ He points at his head as he speaks, rising unsteadily to his feet with his free hand - like gravity matters, like heā€™s forgotten he can fly. ā€œWhy would I bleed red?ā€
His voice rises too, and the people closest to him - Kwan among them, given Phantom had practically landed on his doorstep - can see the sweat forming on his brow as he speaks. His voice rises to a higher pitch than normal.
The ā€˜paintā€™ finally drips to his chin, and falls to splash bright, obvious red-on-white on his collar.
Kwan can just see the cut beyond the blood - where itā€™s coming from. He pockets his phone and steps forward, worry overtaking any confusion or admiration.
ā€œPhantom-ā€
Phantom jolts fumbling back a step before his eyes widen and he floats up, into the air like heā€™d just remembered how.
ā€œAnyway!ā€ Phantomā€™s voice is practically a squeak and itā€™s plain to see the tension in every limb. ā€œGotta go wash off all this paint! Red really isnā€™t my brand, yā€™know. Haha. ha.ā€Ā
Phantom lives up to his name (does he? Can he? Is he?) and vanishes from sight.
The crowd has all of ten seconds to glance at the specks of red on the ground where heā€™d landed before an open jug of bleach materializes to fall to its side, contents covering the area.
Liveblog 8: Episode 5, AKA the one where we discuss Kerubim's dead family again
Tumblr media
Since I made pointing out the food they eat A Thing we do here, let's start out with that for this episode.
First of all, their household is so fish-centric. An octopus? A lobster?? A different lobster and a fish?? Plus, multiple bags, one under the lobster, and one under the giant veggie on top of Joris's other veggies. Probably some grain, I guess. Simone is also carrying some greens in a bag.
Basically... Man, they love fish and veggies, I guess?
Tumblr media
Yet again, we see Kerubim's low self esteem and need for validation in action.
Yes, he thinks he's amazing. Yes, he uses magic to force people to laugh at his jokes. And yes, it makes him very happy and proud.
Tumblr media
Don't worry about it. :)
Tumblr media
I find it kind of interesting that Joris is resistant to the magic, but the simplest explanation is that his soul is intermixed with a dragon. I won't think too much about this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joris should have a salary for the way Kerubim's reputation hinges on him not talking about the shit that goes on in their house.
Like the deadly swords and cursed items everywhere. Or having mold and rotting meat at every corner for his whole life.
Tumblr media
Considering that bamboo milk is alcoholic, I am fascinated by the in-universe implications of this line.
I wish boil-able, alcoholic oat milk was real.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The best way to get Kerubim to do something stupid is to make fun of him. Again, his low, low self-esteem making an appearance.
Genuinely, instead of being at the bar, he should have been in therapy.
Tumblr media
Very small note, but we can see an amputee among the many patrons who listen to Kerubim's scary drunken rambling. I wish more cartoons included this sort of thing.
Though, this might be a bit of a brick-joke, considering what we learn about YeCh'Ti and his arm collection.
Tumblr media
COUGH COUGH COUGH. ANALYSIS EVENT LEVEL 10 ALARM WEE WOO WEE WOO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Firstly, god. The sheer insanity of going from his child self's grief and pain over losing both of his parents, all of his sisters and brothers, to making jokes about this, jokes about having no family and being lonely.
Is it really funny to you, Keke? Or are you just pretending again?
Second of all... I could talk for hours about how much I love/despise this man, but fuck, the sheer level of cruelty in this line knows no bounds.
Tumblr media
Are you really The Last Crepin in your family, Keke?
Tumblr media
Or are you just being cruel and facetious again?
Cruel, and towards the only other person in the whole world who would understand what you went through, because he also went through it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(This is, yet again, your signal to go read The Wheel of Destiny #8: Kerub Crepin and Dessous De Dofus)
No wonder Atcham wants to turn him into a coat. I would fucking hate him too.
Though, with Atcham kind of using his hate for him as a coping mechanism for not having control in his life, and canonically not thinking that Kerubim really... mistreated him, when they were young, it's far more complex than that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Especially with the way Kerubim's own conflicted feelings on their relationship are portrayed in-canon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm so normal about them. Haha.
...Aaaanyway, onto the rest of the ep, while trying to pretend this doesn't make me feel all sorts of emotions:
Tumblr media
This moment is a continuity error, because Ogrest hasn't started his quest for Dofus yet. Also, he may not even be alive yet. Yes, Kerubim and Joris are that old.
It's too cute of an easter egg for me to mind, though.
Tumblr media
God. Joris needs better loved ones. His standards are so low he's looking at Kerubim like šŸ„ŗ
Tumblr media
Something-something Kerubim would genuinely kill himself if it meant people thought he was funny and cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't think he learned anything from this, actually.
Tumblr media
I think we have to kill this guy with hammers.
Keefe Sencen's Journal
Apparently Iā€™m in a city named Sydney unless my new chess-playing friend is a lying liar who tells lies. I have no concrete reason to believe that, but I still havenā€™t gotten her name yet. I think sheā€™s taking it as a personal challenge to tell me literally everything else about her life before that, which I respect on a spiritual level.Ā
She also, for all intents and purposes, had literally nothing better to do, which is good for me because I donā€™t either and I was starting to get bored enough that I was going to try to find a library. Yeah, sure, I had valiant hopes of learning about where I am and how human history and culture work but letā€™s be fucking for real, I was close to pulling out my eyelashes like the Mysterous Miss F just to have some entertainment. I should probably write something for the Mysterious Miss Chess Player to explain why I am constantly loitering in that park and why I havenā€™t said anything and why I keep staring at that little crease between her brows.Ā
Itā€™s nothing, I swear. Itā€™s just that when she concentrates too hard on a problem, she gets the same crease between her brows that Foster does. Iā€™m not saying that Iā€™ve abandoned all hope, but, to be realistic, Iā€™m never going back there, so whatā€™s the real harm in, if not moving on, liking someone else? Stars, I donā€™t even know the boundaries of my own feelings anymore, but the pounding of my heart and the fact Iā€™ve dropped this pen twice seems to be a decent indicator of the fact that Iā€™m in the trenches of the eternal horror that is having a crush. I donā€™t really know how to process it. Iā€™ve been so focussed on Foster for so long that Iā€™ve forgotten what these first few stages are like. If Iā€™m unlucky, Iā€™ll be drawing hearts in the margins tomorrow and be Romeo and Julieting myself off a cliff by the weekend.Ā
And if it doesnā€™t work out, Iā€™ll just let RNGsus take the wheel again and spin that pathfinder so I donā€™t have to deal with the consequences of my actions. Iā€™ve got eternity ahead of me and at least a hundred possible destinations so Iā€™m allowed to fuck up a few times as a treat.Ā
The other major theme of the day is that between the air pollution and the sheer volume of emotions crashing through me at any given moment, slight movements are starting to make me dizzy, and I donā€™t like what that implies for the fate of my empathy. I canā€™t wait for this stupid command ability to be gone so I can actually have a conversation, but until then, it seems as though Iā€™m going to be a fucking mess. So exactly what everyone expected, just with a couple extra steps to make it interesting.Ā
My food stash is also starting to run low, so thatā€™s going to be something Iā€™ll want to deal with soon. Itā€™s probably time to start planning my master plan of bank heistery. Nah, but like, for real Iā€™ll probably just draw some shitty pictures and hope for the best. I should probably get to doing that actually.Ā
Fall Favorite Fic Festival, Entry 4
Tumblr media
I'm writing this in Memphis, TN, and I can't see any red trees from my hotel window. Too far south to have gotten started, maybe. It's been very overcast. I'm here for a professional meeting, and as is always the case, they've had the AC set to "violent" in the meeting rooms and I don't know that I'll ever be warm again. You know how if you've ever gotten a sunburn, the water in the shower is warmer when it hits your feet than when it comes out of the showerhead, because it's been heated by your skin? My showers here have been the complete opposite of that.
All that to say, I'm still feeling sad, still feeling lonely, definitely facing an anniversary reaction from my sister's passing, and still quite intentionally drowning my sorrows in fic.
I had the best, most angsty fic in mind for this entry, like, call and warn @221bjen level angst, but then one day, this manip came to mind, for no particular reason:
Tumblr media
and oh, yeah, baby. I couldn't sign into AO3 fast enough. If you know, you know, and if you don't, you've got to read:
Whiteout, by SinceWhenDoYouCallMe_John
I will spare your TL by adding a cut here.
This is a fic I re-read fairly often for sheer pleasure, but that is not to say it's fluff. The author tries in the notes to make it sound like fluff, but it's Sherlock and John as part of an aerial rescue team at the freaking Matterhorn and there is ice and danger and multiple CPR events and Greg Lestrade speaking French and secrets and tears and all kinds of relationship drama and it's JUST NOT FLUFF, OK? However, it is written in a fun documentary style (Shane based it on a documentary he came across on Netflix) with mostly dialogue and camera direction and it is a quick, satisfying read.
I've had the pleasure of betaing for this author in the past, and so I've spent more than a little time thinking about his style. He is an extremely versatile writer, and I think this fic really highlights that. If you compare this style to, say, the highly descriptive and romantic (not just in the relationship way, but also in the world-painted-in-perfect-light-way) Gimme Shelter, you wouldn't necessarily know they were written by the same person within a fairly short block of time (8 months). This fic is crisp, well timed, and quickly paced, with perfectly set points of action, snappy dialogue, and not a lot of down time. Gimme Shelter moves well too, but it's a very different feeling, silky and gentle. It's like the difference between taking a shot of great tequila vs savoring a perfect Cabernet. And if that's not enough for you, please note that SWDYCMJ has also written Priestlock, a skiing OT3, a straight-ahead ghost story, Potterlock, and a Black Mirror crossover that kept me on my toes. Plus, of course, the beautiful Brokeback Mountain fusion that still breaks my heart in all the best ways.
I mentioned in my last entry how the artistry in this fandom continues to knock me out to this day, and Shane's collective work is another prime example.
I don't feel like I'm doing this fic justice, but it's kinda hard for me to talk about without ruining the surprise of it. Even discussing the structure is tricky. Just...go read it. You'll thank me later.
