when i’m with you - i’m not a fan of this genre but these mfs made me like this either way... - obsessed with jisungs parts (high notes and rap) - don’t get me started on verse 3 (where mark, jaemin, jisung and jeno do the “you know what i mean” rap) makes me elevate

an honest review of orange blood from musical and conceptual observation (not proofread)

opening remarks: wow... they really let go of manifesto saga all together, huh? ngl i think they're doing this to cater towards the dark moon audience (as per what sunghoon said in the vlog they did in lotte world towards solon, "are you more famous than me? you are me."

also, i'm gonna be truthful here: i haven't kept up with their lore stuff after border era finished (actually it's more of because i've been straying from kpop a lot now). i used to read webtoons but idk man i still think that hybe is really pushing their artists into making intellectual properties so they can license it to everyone (the successful ones are tiny tan and bts universe) but when you're here for the artistry in the music and audio visual aspect of the music, you kinda feel being left behind. so, relating to another hybe artist, i kind of like txt separating from their star seekers character but dark moon is technically enhypen's (and &team's) dna now.

concept-wise visually, i think it's good. we love a sanskrit representation with ksana and kalpa, but i think it'll be more interesting if they dig deeper into what it means cosmological, mythological, etc and relate it towards dark moon, sooha/selen, the werewolves of sunshine city and more.

also, it's an interesting choice on hybe's behalf to make a comeback between &team and enhypen around the same time, especially since they are brothers-with-rivalries group (yes, i just coin that teehee)

i can go on on a tangent about how belift doesn't know where enhypen's is going long-term wise but... eh, that's for another time...

let's start!

1.mortal: intro track as always! i love the more lo-fi instrumental of it (it can be a good bgm to reflect on mortality akfbauewiue4g) i also love that every member participates here, either by monologuing or singing. it's like a poem in a short film (it could actually be in the concept trailer, cmiiw) and i think it's gonna be a good visual spectacle on concerts (which given the state of kpop now. they will do tours even for EPs, too criminal actually)

also WHY THE FUCK IS THIS LONGER THAN THE TITLE TRACK FFS (unless this is not a monologue, but dialogues between differing perspective, i agree that it should be that long) oh gosh...

2.sweet venom: AINT THIS JAKE'S ERA?! my boy!!! also WE GET A FREAKING BRIDGE ISTG YOU DON'T KNOW HOW UNEXPECTED THAT IS AS SOMEONE WHO MISSES ENHYPEN'S BRIDGES (given-taken my love). from the post i made before this, i mentioned hybe is doing something interesting and the answer is... we're returning to 2020 hybe again with their retro-sounding title tracks like chasing the feeling, god of music, and this. also, i watched the mv first before hearing the audio and i love the stop-motion mv like for real (definitely matches the music)

i definitely can see and hear the michael jackson influence for this comeback and the choreo, funk is his genre after all. but the funk is making it easy-listening that it doesn't overwhelm those who aren't funk and disco listeners. the orchestral bytes in the bridges make it nostalgic towards songs in the 90s. it definitely is trying to cater towards gen z's affection towards nostalgia (which hits me too with the mj influence, riki probably likes this comeback so much :D)

highlights? oh the three oldest hyungs get it. jake has never been the center of a comeback (it's always heeseung or jungwon) and i love that he can hold himself up, for my fellow jaeyun lover be prepared to see him in thumbnails now~ heeseung and jay's vocals? chef's kiss! get those falsettos, kings! and their runs in the verses is just so good ughh

also, another tangent of me of the vocal mixing incoming. i think it's better but niki's voice sounds unrecognizable in the audio. maybe it's because his voice hasn't stop evolving or what not but yeah, if i didn't watch the mv first, i wouldn't recognize niki's voice. also the last chorus can be given two more bars cause it just unsatisfyingly ends? and i can understand why sunghoon doesn't have that much lines here because (and don't cancel me on this) it doesn't suit his timbre much because his voice is more on the baritone range than the others who are tenor and this song is in a high key. if maybe they can lower the key like a full step than it can match his voice more...

3.still monster: emo-ballad enha? is that you? the start does sound a bit more bossa-nova ish before the drums kick in. i love how muted the instrumental is so that we can hear the vocals more. it definitely has the analog phone filter to it, kinda of reminds me of haru haru by big bang but mellower. i think i know that synth keyboard sound font is because it sounds so vintage and i like how it harmonizes with the guitar. i can definitely play bass to the song *cue me trying to make the bass tab in my free time after this*. i can hear sunghoon again yay! also we love the ad-libs at the last chorus. get it, heeseung! and this song is very heeseung actually lol

4.blind: wow... synth? at the start i think this is gonna be like cyberpunk by ateez but then it goes into a more rnb route. i almost thought also jersey club percussion, okay drum fills in the pre-chorus. and BAM... synthwave! this is more like take me home by ateez. i think this could even be an ateez song, but it's not as abrasive as the ones ateez makes. that post-chorus part though when the bass kicks in, the fuck was that? and why can't we got more of that D:?

but i actually like how slow it's taking, like they're trying to take the vibes in first, ya know? i think it is because this is their first venture to synthwave from a more rnb/hip-hop-based set of songs. they tried it with tamed-dashed but this is a mature, slower version of it. also, heeseung with the ad-libs istg!!! heeseung stop it, don't tug my heart string like that. that bounce between sunghoon and niki, we like that!

5.orange flower (you complete me): *cue onf's complete* you complete... ME~~~~ when i see the tracklist, that's the kind of song i predict with this title. and, a signature of enhypen in this album, we have a more mellow version of the style they're going with this song. they're also catering this towards gen z as this is like the type of songs that's gonna be placed in a "indie rock end credits" type of music. it's pretty predictable with a name like orange flower for it to be a feel-good song. i actually like this more than tfw cause the instrumental is more optimistic.

i also like the verses more than the chorus (kinda a bit anti-climatic for me) but it still gives of a music that you play while riding bicycles with your friends around sunset (wish i could do that again but growing up is pain ehheheheeh)

6.sweet venom (english ver): since this is just sweet venom but in a different language, i'm gonna focus more on vocal performance and lyrics.

i like how gritty they sound, like the textures in their voice i can hear it better. the way the pronounce the words is clear enough to be deciphered. i love the pre-chorus in korean version better but i know that they're trying to make the lyrics make sense in the language. idk why but heeseung sounds better here like my man wtf is on with you istg

7.sweet venom (ft. bella poarch): first: i don't have beef with bella poarch cause i don't really care about her. she's just another influencer trying to survive the internet and life honestly. i think it's also another situation how engenes are jealous because enhypen's with a girl because they're delulu that enha can only be with them through sooha lmao (read: enhypen now performing bite me with female partners) because they dig into controversies that don't really involve them (international engenes, especially westerners). i just think that what western engenes are doing with the situation is reacting the same way that korean engene react to them during bite me era. it's part of stan culture and to break it, it's gonna be hard.

second: since this is technically sweet venom eng ver with bella poarch, i'll be focusing on vocal performance and lyrics (if they decide to change it)

even from the mixing, you can hear the difference from the vocals. bella's voice is much more airy with more reverb than enha's. i also think that it makes the song more richer, especially with the harmonics, some are a bit unnecessary. but from me, this changes sweet venom's color from a full orange color towards a peachy one with bella's feminine influence.

closing remarks: i definitely didn't expect to like this album as much.

coming from unliking three enha title tracks in a row, even i can't believe that i like the sound of this album. the sound is more cohesive; a mellow rnb touch in every track as they combine with other genres (sweet venom with funk, still monster with emo-ballad, blind with synthwave, and orange flower with indie rock) yet they still try to push the boundaries of genres they wanna try.

the highlight of the overall album is definitely heeseung. he kills it with his vocal performance and i love how versatile he is as he pushes some fancy things in one song and dim it in another, creating a more diverse set of texture for each song. jay is close second because this album just shows how much of a powerhouse he is (i think his music diversification with listening to rock songs helps him with that).

when it comes to the whole comeback, imo, it doesn't really match that well from both audio and visual. it's like they have two different visions cause the theme doesn't matches with between the art and music direction. it's like if belift just said "the main theme of this album is orange." okay so what do you mean orange? like visually, the concept photo is very orange-like and the music does sound orange to me, but what is the connection here? it also definitely shows with how enha can't explained what orange blood means in one interview they did. because i don't understand what they're trying to say with the phrase orange blood. is it orange because it's like fire? is it orange because it is derived from red blood? if it's like fire, then why did we get a funk song?

also, what saddens me is the track listing like only 5 new songs + one is more like monologue. even i can see it as a scam if you actually are trying to use your money to buy an album + they have 3 versions of this album with randomized photocard. please treat your money carefully!

Hey so I'm pretty sure it was you who told me to listen to a song from The Waitress but I couldn't remember which one so I just listened to a lot of them.

You matter to me is such a good Thomastair song!! It's so sweet and I was low key tearing up. It also kinda makes me think of kitty as well. I think that might have been the one you recommended.

ok so it may have been more than a few days, but what're you gonna do about it?

so i wanted to do another brain dump, and i wanted to listen to hadestown, so i'm doing a song by song brain dump as i go along. this means that my thoughts are going to be even more stream-of-consciousness style (if that's even possible.) also i'm talking specifically about the original broadway cast recording bc i haven't listened to any other version. (also this was completed across multiple months so it is even more chaotic lmao).

also i highly recommend that you listen to the musical and/or pull up the lyrics as you go along! enjoy!

road to hell. the way andre brings in the chorus is flawless please. also the way that hermes is both a narrator and a character in the story he's narrating? beautiful. "the king of the mine." he sounds so nice here for some reason. also love his self-introduction "maybe it will turn out this time" no it won't but thank you for trying. also breaking the fourth wall to acknowledge the chorus and crew is so nice, here comes reeve ;) mans sounds like an angel. you can hear amber's voice stick out of the chorus and i literally love it so much. i'd die for amber gray but we'll get to that later.

any way the wind blows. the fates literally sound so perfect together. Eva's intro throws me off every time, she sounds so pretty. dear god the harmonies with the fates hit so different. can this cast please narrate my life? there's the wind comparisons ;D the "ooos" are so good. "and it ain't because i'm kind" idk i just like how andre sounds here. oh and the funny behind "so i took him underneath my wing" because hermes has wings on his helmet and shoes.

come home with me. orpheus is so oblivious but i love it. also eurydice is literally such a mood. the wordplay with "come again". the "oh, he's crazy" is my favorite part of the whole song. also eva's voice acting is so good.

wedding song. the way she says "lover"? my ass cannot handle this. eva sounds so smug in the beginning of this song and i love it. "sing the song ;)" eurydice is so fantastic. the chorus of "la" is so pretty. eva joining in during the end is just. so perfect.

epic i. hell yeah introduce the king and queen (both literally and figuratively). reeve's falsetto <3 the way orpheus looks to hermes for approval throughout the musical. hermes narrating over orpheus singing.

livin' it up on top. HELL YES THE QUEEN HAS ARRIVED. i love amber gray so much. the gravel and the rasp. please step on me. also i love the idea of persephone being the wine aunt, especially because media usually portrays her as soft and breakable. the way she says "haaard". the way the music gets more upbeat and energetic when hermes says "the world came back to liiife!" the instrumental/dance? break is so good. please kill me with that trumpet good sir. the leadup to when amber starts singing again. orpheus really knows how to give a speech. "i will ;)" amber please step on me i am not joking.

all i've ever known (intro). thank you for the intro king. the music is so pretty. the way it picks up with the piano part <3

all i've ever known. eva sounds so pretty dear god. yay more wind references! the wordplay with "hold". and also the references to hot and cold throughout the musical. "i don't wanna ever have to let you go." lol ironic because she ends up going with hades. "i knew you before we met, and i don't even know you yet." the fucking wordplay. like holy shit. the "love at first sight" feelings. this line gets me every damn time. the wordplay from 2:10 - 2:38 is so fucking incredible. i lose it every time istg. the instrumental portion is so pretty. the wind! "we'll always be like this" i fucking love irony so much. its so underrated and adds so many layers to the story.

way down hadestown. amber gray. that's it. "you either get to hell or to hadestown, ain't no difference anymore". i fucking love this line so much. not really sure why but the delivery is perfect. also the whole thing with it being a train? i love that so much. all the allusions and comparisons they can make are fantastic. more amber gray appreciation. and ofc. the fates. more fantastic instrumental breaks. "and you better forget about your wishing well." this line is so good but so sad because its literally persephone saying that "hey, fair warning, life is shit down there" and i feel bad for her. like the way she's super sassy and shit, but just stops singing when hades gets there, you can tell that she's definitely not ok. speaking of hades, holy shit patrick page. sounds so fucking fantastic. thank you for existing good sir. eva with the breathtaking single lines. and eva's voice standing out when she sings "ground".

a gathering storm. the constant references to weather and nature throughout the whole musical. eurydice with the common sense. the wind again! "did you hear me, orpheus?" he did not, in fact, hear her.

epic ii. the different names for hades in each epic make me so happy. hades thoughts: "i think my wife might not come back cause i'm super controlling. whatever shall i do? oh, i know! be even more controlling!" lmao dumbass motherfucker. that might not work out so well. i fucking love the transition into "chant" so much.

chant. this is one of my favorite songs from the musical. the wordplay within the entire song is so fucking fantastic. hades singing about desire and then orpheus singing the "song of love" was definitely done on purpose and i'm living for it. every single one of eva's lines make me emotional. ma'am why are you good at everything?? the band! more weather references! patrick page singing "lover" hits different. orpheus singing about hades and persephone being blind and deaf. lmao irony because he's not paying attention to anything around him. the wind! weather! "the song of love" is what brought orpheus and eurydice together, but orpheus' devotion to finishing it is what drives eurydice to hades. "did you think i'd be impressed" i was right ;) it didn't work out so well.

hey, little songbird. the strings <3 patrick page is a god (lol i'm so funny). how does he manage to make manipulation sound so good? bird references! the vocal contrast! eva's voice has this kind of "innocence" to it. especially compared to patrick. not sure if that's on purpose or not, but i love it. also the low note kills me every time. the octave jumps between patrick and eva's voices is just. ugh. and also eva's entire second verse is so fucking good. the emotion she portrays in her voice is so spectacular. seriously hades with the manipulation is so interesting and its so good. (manipulation is not a good thing i just mean that its done so well in the show. do not manipulate people!)

if it's true. another one of my favorites. pop off intro. the broken "is this how the world is?" sadly, yes. "but everybody knows that walls have ears." is literally such a powerful line to me for some reason. it does a great job of bringing in the chorus. and by calling the workers "walls" it shows that hades views them as "less than." they aren't even referred to as people. "what's the use of his backbone if he never stands upright." oh my god. because they literally cannot stand upright. anais mitchell is literally a fucking genius. fuck the 1%. gambling references! the chorus backing him is just so pretty. the way orpheus looks to the chorus for advice and support. "we're standing." ugh its so good.

how long. oh my fucking god. amber fucking gray. (that's it, that's the post). the way she sounds resigned/disappointed when she says "i've had enough" makes me so sad. there are no words to describe how i feel about 0:25 - 0:41. like their relationship is strained, and super mega fucked up, but it's obvious that they still care about one another. the emotion in their voices throughout this song is fantastic. the play on light and dark. also more bird references! how they view themselves/their self importance. hades is a most importantly king. persephone is most importantly a wife. it really show that hades views power as more important than anything else. "nothing comes of the songs people sing." holy fucking shit. cause their song is the "song of love," but they can barely stand each other and their relationship has fallen apart. persephone commenting on his love of power over his love of her. amber's voice during "the earth must die" is so nice and for what? god i love her. they sound so nice together <3

chant (reprise). another favorite hehe. the strings! it's all just so pretty. when the piano comes in i die a little. the self realization coming from the chorus when they're like "oh shit, this is wrong. i don't deserve to be treated like this." is so fucking fantastic. the "young mannn" again! hades really be like "manipulate her! make her depend on you financially! i've been ding this a while kid! i know how to successfully control women!" reeve sounds so pretty pls. the way that eurydice has basically become part of the chorus (since she's just another worker now). more self realization! the different ways that hades and orpheus view the "song of love." "sing before i kill you so i can use it to manipulate my wife and make her feel like shit." patrick's voice tho.

epic iii. reeve coming in with that falsetto like nobody's business. orpheus really about to bite you in the ass with your own damn song. amber gray <3. the "ooo"s in the background. the way the music picks up when reeve gets to the "la"s. it's just so fucking good. that falsetto again. orpheus really looked at the king of hell, a literal god, and said "i want to ruin him psychologically" and it fucking worked. which is some of my favorite irony because hades wouldn't have shit if it weren't for that fact that he's a good manipulator and takes advantage of the needy. that last line <3

epic iii (instrumental). i have no words for how fucking beautiful this is. i so desperately want an extended version. like for real love this so much. if i get married, i want this to be the song for the first dance.

promises. eurydice is so proud of him for finishing. the way that eurydice realized that she cares about him more that material objects. wind and weather references! "if we can do it so can they!" she sounds so excited. :( "hand-in-hand" lol nope. not them refencing wedding song, anyway the wind blows, and then giving their "i do"s. absolutely heart wrenching.

word to the wise. the fates. pls step on me ladies. the lyrics throughout this are so fucking good. lol hades being damned. cause he's the king of hell. honestly its solid advice tho. humans are really fucking stupid.

his kiss, the riot. give us them adjectives king. " how dare people want rights! >:(" hades is really trying to make himself the good guy rn. the music! 2:15 - 3:03 is so good pls. the lyrics are just so spectacular.

wait for me (reprise) (intro). hello again andre! hermes literally says "he's trying to psych you out and manipulate you. he wants you to doubt everything" and orpheus says "are you sure tho?" and then procedes to doubt everything. the way the music changes is <3. the song transition.

wait for me (reprise). my absolute fucking favorite song in this musical. the first fucking lyric is so good. it really sets an expectation for the song and i am not disappointed. lyrics that talk about how fucked up any single person's brain is are so fucking cool to me. god i love this song. how soft the first set of "wait for me"s are. the support/pressure from the chorus. the entire exchange between hades and persephone. the way amber's voice sticks out of the chorus. the fates coming in clutch again. train references! more brain talk! amber gray please end me. eva sounds so pretty. and the final note is so good!

doubt comes in. the long intro that builds up suspense. the first time that orpheus's "la"s aren't echoed by the chorus/music. wind! weather! the fates sound so pretty like always. reeve genuinely sounds so scared. the way the music picks up and the chorus joins in when eurydice starts singing. the music is so unsettling and i love it. god i love his voice. 3:44 - 3:57 always hits so different. you realize just how much she means to him. how it all goes to shit when the music reaches the climax. the fact that the music clashes on purpose. the sadness in their voices.

road to hell (reprise). it all comes full circle. god andre sounds so sad. the way you come to really hear the lyrics because there's no upbeat music to distract you this time, "its a tragedy" lol because the actual written story is a tragedy. "i learned that from a friend of mine" poor orpheus :(. the way the chorus slowly joins in and the music slowly picks up. the "can you feel it" is literally so fucking powerful. fuck yes amber. fuck it up queen. amber and eva sound so nice together. the "its a love song, its a sad song" is so sad. the final lyric is just. ugh.

i’m gonna write a review on greatest hits because i love it and it’s my comfort album from now on and i feel like writing a whole ass essay

so let’s start reviewing each song (the reviews get better as you go)

greatest hits: i think it is a great intro, and it really gives you a taste of what the album is like. i like the repeating line, and how the beat changes a bit every time, i really enjoyed it honestly. but i don’t really see it as a track, so i hear it when listening to the album, but don’t add it to playlists.

fuzzy: i loved fuzzy SO much. the guitar riff killed me. the EFFECTS. i love every aspect of it so much. the little brrr is so awesome as well. i love the general vibes of it, it makes me want to dance and sing and just everything. it’s amazing and such a good way to start the album. the buildups are so well done as well.

lowkey as hell: honestly, i loved lowkey as hell when it came out, but as soon as they released snow globe i just kinda forgot about it. i think it was a good single to start with, with all the teasing and leaking and stuff. but it left me with kinda low expectations, since i had just gotten into them when it came out, and i expected more based on their older stuff (i’m such a FANDOM stan istg). but i guess it was a good thing, because i was pleasantly surprised when the other singles came out.

numb: this song made it to my top ten one day after it came out. i listened to it every single day and memorized the lyrics in less then two hours. it legit makes me wanna burn something down. i love it so much. the lyrics are so well written and it always puts me in such a good mood.

violet!: i can’t even put into words how much i love this track. ok first let’s mention the TRANSITION. it’s so smooth and well done and i’m addicted to it. and the song itself has such good vibes and is just adorable generally. since it came out it has been all i’ve listened to (so like two days) and i love it so muchhhhh. i admit i woke myself up at three am just so i could listen to it and dance around.

snow globe: i think this was the single i liked the most. the lyrics are so well written and amazing. i love the general beat and the start is so amazing. (that guitar in the begging tho) and i was soooo excited when it came out. awsten’s voice is so soothing in it as well. i just really love snow globe.

just kidding: i love the lyrics. i think the beat and chorus are a bit weak compared to the other songs, but the verses and the “i like your apartment, i like how your hair smells” is awesome, and i guess it makes sense that the beat is a bit calmer and less developed considering the meaning of the song. but the VERSES and the harmonies are amazing.

the secret life of me: this is probably the most relatable one for me, but i’d rather not compare my life to songs and awsten’s feelings. it’s his song, not mine. moving on, the fast paced beat hooks me so well, and how his voice somehow fits and doesn’t at the same time?? i love it. and the chorus is so catchy and amazing. “real life never feels it’s mine” “i keep my eyes wide, shut”???? a literal lyrical god????like cmon

american graffiti: love the more punk rock vibes, the guitar is soooo good and otto with the drumsss. i love this track so much. “if you need me i’m here, no” foreshadowing much? i’m so addicted. the small beat build ups that lead to the chorus are sooo smart. i can never get enough of the band’s harmonies and background music.

paranoid: there’s no way i’m typing the whole title. i’m not sure what i was expecting when they announced the single, but it surely wasn’t that. starting out with the chorus was such a good choice for this track. it literally hit me in the face multiple times and then stabbed me three times. and i thanked it. and kissed it. i love it

fruit roll ups: this is such a cute song. the more chill and slow vibes comparing to the chaos of paranoid is such a good move, it is like a little break after a marathon. the little beats at the end make the serotonin machine go brrrr

LIKE IT: THIS SONG. THIS FUCKING SONG. i can’t even explain it. it’s fucking fire. i love it more than i love myself and my entire family and friends. it owns my soul and i will burn a building down while it plays and i dance and flip off the police.

gladiator: love it love it love it. the beat????is so good????while he talks??????? like sir???? you are so musically talented and i love you???? great song, great track, awesome interlude and gives a little 🤌 to the album yknow

magnetic: so this one was probably the one i was the most curious about, with all the emojis and stuff. i’m soooooo in love with every aspect of it. the badass energy, the beat changes, the riffs, the lyrics, everything. it’s such a “i will kill you, but don’t hate me” song somehow. it was definitely better than i expected.

crying over it all: he just loves to see me suffer i guess. thanks for putting this after a badass song that makes me feel on the top of the world. it’s such an amazing track tho. i love the build up, the beat drops and background changing while he calmly sings. everything about it is so endearing.

ice bath: i- don’t know what to say. i mean, it’s a great track, but i don’t know how i feel about it. go off bestie ig. but how it starts with greatest hits and then distorts into something darker and heavier???? that’s musical intelligence right there

see you in the future: probably my favorite track that wasn’t released before. the changes and awsten becoming a rap god out of nowhere??? and the nod to paranoid??? so amazing. i’m obsessed with the beat and the quickening. the interlude???? i LIVE for otto’s drum solo at the end this song makes me wanna jump so bad. i’d kill to see it live.

overall, i love the album more than anything else. the diversity of the tracks, how it goes from calm to chaos to sad to happy to even more chaotic and somehow fits perfectly together. it was so well produced. i can tell the band and their crew worked really hard on it, and they really are the greatest hits. i’m so proud of it, and i’m glad awsten is so excited and proud of something he released. every aspect of this album hooks me so well, and it really is a musical masterpiece.

What a terrible day…

You walk tiredly along the dirt path toward your home. Well- I say your home, but it isn’t really yours. You just live there. And living there is a privilege. You’re reminded of that fact every time you cross the fae circle that borders your home. It’s massive, seven stories tall specifically. With a sigh, you walk past the fruit tree in the front yard and unlock the front door. 

‘’I’m home!’’ you call as you take your coat off and hang it up. You walk into the living room and look around.

‘’Hey y/n.’’ you’re gently greeted by EJ, the giant demon, who’s sprawled out on the couch. Laying on top of him is a much skinnier and smaller human with honey-brown hair. Cody. He turns to look at you and smiles a bit.

‘’Hey y/n.’’ he also greets. You smile tiredly and nod in greeting. You open your mouth to say hi to the two boys, but you’re cut off by yet another person greeting you.

‘’y/n!’’ at the top of the stairs stands a small girl with frizzy brown hair dressed in a cute, pink dress. She grins and leaps down the stairs, floating down them elegantly and landing on the final step. She leans off the bannister and smiles wide at you. ‘’How was your day?’’ Sally chirps. 

You shrug. ‘’It was okay.’’ you murmur. You look up the stairs and see two others walking down it- or rather one walking down while carrying the other. The one carrying is tall, with wispy black hair and puffy striped sleeves, and the one being carried is smaller, with brownish-red skin and short fiery hair. ‘’Hi Jack. Hey Slendra.’’ 

‘’Hi y/n!’’ Slendra chirps. 

‘’Eya.’’ LJ drops Slendra down on the ground and straightens up, smiling at you. And then his smile drops. ‘’Ye look tired.’’ he murmurs, frowning.

‘’Yeah, cuz I am.’’ you reply dryly. Jack squints at you for a moment, then smirks slightly. 

‘’Well then,’’ he looks down at Sally and Slendra. The two girls glance up at him, curious. ‘’I fink I know wha’ ye need.’’

You roll your eyes. ‘’Uh-huh?’’ you’re ready for Jack to whip some lame practical joke toy out of his sleeve, or to do something dumb and wacky to try and make you laugh, but it doesn’t happen. Instead, his arms stretch out quickly and grab your shoulders. You’re yanked and pulled over to him just as quickly. He hugs you tight, swinging you around a bit. You squirm against him for a little bit, then give up. He’s not letting you go. And you don’t really have a reason to fight back.

Jack shifts you in his arms a bit until you’re sitting sideways on his arm. ‘’Pops! Lemme up too!’’ Slendra chirps. Jack laughs gently and grabs the girl by the back of her overalls. She’s dropped into your lap, so now there’s two people sitting in the crook of his arm. You laugh gently and pat Slendra’s head.

‘’Thank you. I needed that.'’ you smile up at LJ while Sally floats up and wraps her arms around your neck, hugging you. Her ghostly form feels chill to the touch, but you’re definitely not going to make her get off. 

‘’Can I join?’’ EJ asks, looking at the four of you from the couch. Jack laughs and crosses the room toward the couch. You can’t help but laugh quietly to yourself at this situation.

‘’C’mere Junior.’’ Jack says. EJ climbs off the couch, holding Cody up against him like he weighs nothing. Cody doesn’t really seem to mind this. EJ flops against LJ and the clown’s extendable arms wind around you all, squeezing you tight. You laugh as you watch Cody struggle to free one of his arms from where it’s being trapped at his side. He catches your eye and grins slightly. You laugh again and rest your head against Jack’s shoulder. It’s silent- just the six of you being held and hugged. 

‘’Uhh...what’s going on here?’’

You look up over your shoulder to see Jeff, Liu and Ben standing on the stairs, staring at the cuddle pile in amusement.

‘’LJ is holding us all captive. Send help.’’ you reply. Liu snickers at that. Ben leans on the bannister and cocks a brow.

‘’So...family hug pile?’’ He asks. You nod. ‘’Sweet. Count me in.’’ he leans back up and walks down the stairs. 

‘’Fockin’ ‘ell lads I’m ‘ardly g’nna ‘old all of yes.’’ Jack mutters. There’s some more arm shifting. You’re dropped, and then yanked into another hug before you can get your bearings. LJ’s striped arms squeeze the eight of you tight. You’re squeezed up next to Sally and Slendra, with Cody to your left squeezed between you and LJ. he’s unfortunately been pulled away from EJ, who’s gripping Liu and Jeff in a bear hug while Ben is just- stuck in the middle of you all. He’s nothing but a tuft of blonde hair poking out from behind the others. You force yourself to repress another fit of laughs at how absurd this situation is.

‘’What are you all doing?’’ 

Slender’s deep, elegant voice comes from the kitchen. You squirm around to look at him.

‘’Hey Slender.’’ you greet with a grin. ‘’We’re all hugging it out.’’

‘’...why?’’

You shrug the best you can. You hear a couple of the others laugh and giggle quietly. ‘’I dunno it just sorta happened,’’ you smile at him. ‘’Jack’s idea. Not mine.’’

Slender doesn’t look amused. At all. You tilt your head, grinning.

‘’Wanna join in, luv?’’ Jack calls. Slender folds his arms, giving you all an expressionless glare. Jack smirks. ‘’C’moooon ye know ye wanna!’’

‘’Yeah! C’mon dad!’’ Jeff exclaims. 

‘’Absolutely not.’’

‘’But daaaaaad.’’ Slendra whines. You grin. Out of all of you, she’s probably the best for convincing Slender to do something he doesn’t want to do. It’s silent for a few moments, all of you watching him in anticipation.

Slender crosses the room and crouches down slightly. Jack’s arms yank him into the pile, only further smothering poor Ben. There’s another chorus of laughs and giggles. Slender sighs quietly.

I’m going to be honest - I vastly preferred the setlist and the overall show on the 16th to this one on the 17th. We were numbers 17 and 18 for this show, but we had had the feeling that there was no way this show could live up to the hype that was the show on the 16th; we were right.

Most of my highlights are going to be referencing the break between the main set and the encore where the band just hung out, chatted, and gave Meto presents for quite some time. That was so much fun.

We were in the second row in front of Mia. He seemed off that night - I don't know what it was, but when the curtain dropped, and he was staring into the crowd trying to see who was around him, he looked shocked (pleasantly) that we had gotten to the second row for him. He is a rather aloof one, isn't he? My interaction that night was mainly with Tsuzuku - it made my evening to be completely honest. There were no Mia-gya directly in front of Mia - I wonder if it threw him off? The girls directly in front of us were Koichi-gya and Meto-gya, so Mia wasn’t able to really get them pumped, so I felt bad for him.

During ACME, though, omfg. I stayed to the side because I wasn’t about to play in the crowd - that song gets intense. I was beside the wall for the show anyway, so it wasn’t a huge deal, except that I was an easy target. I did minimal furi - enough that I was doing something, but during the first chorus, of course, Tsuzuku looks directly at me, and he’s about to point or do something at me, and then he notices I’m singing along. So he stares at me for two lines of the chorus, gestures at me, I gesture back at him, and I get a head nod. Well, okay. We sang -at- each other. That was wonderful, unexpected, and easily made my night. He always finds new ways to impress me, but the level of interaction he gives is amazing. (I’m also not crazy because this comes back at the in-stores.)

I know that the row got tighter after ACME because some girl lost her spot and invaded the second row, but I was still trying to enjoy it. I think that @crucifyregret was less happy, but they also had a girl beside them, not a wall, so…(sorry it was an annoying situation for you!)

Like I said, I’ll focus on this part in between the main set and the encore:

So, we shouted for the encore, then Meto played along to it, then Mia came running out with his guitar. Ah, sorry, first Meto had balloons tied to his drumset, and apparently, there was something inside the one giant balloon. He starts trying to rattle it, then brings a mic closer for us to try and hear it - it was really cute and he was really pleased with himself. He drummed on a balloon, okay?

Okay, okay, so Mia is out there, everything is cool, but no Koichi. Meto starts making the cutest confused looks as he keeps looking into the back from where he’s standing. Then he stops drumming and sort of trails toward the door, where of course, Koichi comes out with a cake. The candles are already lit, and Koichi is showing it off, walking to the center of the stage - then he tried to quiet the girls down because he didn’t want the candles getting blown out, but he also smiled, and made an “I have a solution to this!” kind of face when a candle did go out. He pulled a lighter from his pocket and re-lit it. METO’S FACE ISTG - he is such a young boy about these things, like, he doesn’t want to be hassled, just leave him alone. It was really cute actually. He trailed over, took the cake, Koichi was talking, Tsuzuku came out holding a whiskey highball and stood to Koichi’s side of the stage. It became clear that Koichi would be MC-ing this whole thing. Mia stood in front of us with his guitar, just being a casual onlooker. Meto kept swiping some of the icing off of his strawberry shortcake bday cake off and tasting it, and when he was done holding it, he passed it off to a staff member.

We figured that would be it. We were wrong. Dead wrong. Poor Meto.

This was only the beginning.

Koichi announces they’d like to give Meto his presents. Mia got two cars, so I’m like, omg, I wonder what they got Meto~

Each present was wrapped in newspaper and brought out by a staff member, handed to Koichi, Koichi made some comment about it, and then he would hand it off to Meto, who was standing where Tsuzuku normally does on the stage. We are all cracking up. The first three presents were giant stuffed animals, they were cute af, they were stackable. The first one Meto put Ruana on it. Then he realized there were two more, so he lined them up at first, and then he made a tower. Koichi named all of them, too. I’m pretty sure the brown one was “ちゃいろ” which is brown in Japanese. The other two were white and pink, and the names were ridiculous. If I remember which games/shows the names were from, I’ll update this.

Then there were two appliances, one to make mega takoyaki, and another to make mega something else - I can’t remember. Meto looked happy. Koichi told him not to forget to show his gifts off, so he starts to make a big show of them for the audience. He even tried to give it to one of the girls (I think it was the one I can’t remember), but she obviously flailed, and he laughed at her. He piled those on Tsuzuku’s platform as well.

Then he was given some sports equipment. They gave him a soccer ball, which he immediately opened and started playing with it, and then aggressively shoved it back into the box, only to have it not go back in. He fought the soccer ball. He ended up just adding it to the pile. Then, he was given a skateboard - you guys, he was so thrilled. He also started playing with that, but with all the wires, he kind of just moved back and forth on it; It was excellent. Koichi kept telling him to be careful.

Mind you, through all of this, Tsuzuku is standing to the side, chatting with a roadie, and making comments about every present. He wasn’t really using his microphone, but they were generally things like: “who picked that out?” - All little taunting, cute things. Mia was silent, haha. Meto, because he couldn’t take the stress of the spotlight or something?? He kept walking over to Tsuzuku and asking for sips of his whiskey. So, there they were, sharing a can of highball - Meto making faces the entire time. Imagine: Tsuzuku happily sipping at his whiskey, Meto going up to him, gesturing for the can, Tsuzuku pointing at the can, and then Meto nodding with such an exhausted look on his face...

Koichi also - guys, I was dying - “I don’t want to do this anymore,” “Can’t someone else talk?” “I really don’t want to.” KOICHI DID NOT STOP WHINING ABOUT HAVING TO MC THE WHOLE THING. His voice gets really cute when he’s whining too, omfg.

The last gift Meto received were weird glasses, and then a blue velvet track jacket, a white button-down shirt, and a red bowtie - he was Doraemon. He was psyched. We could tell because he immediately began to put the shirt on over his outfit. He was dressing on stage and Tsuzuku was like, “Please be careful because of your hair.” Meto’s red hair was still bleeding all over his clothes. It was cute that Tzk was concerned. Koichi was commenting on Doraemon, Tsuzuku was like, “Aren’t there supposed to be pants?” Meto shrugged, and a staff guy ran into the back - they had forgotten to wrap the pants, haha. Everyone was dying as Meto shimmied into those as well.

Then, in a case where I think Koichi really wished he could die or crawl into a hole, he had to lead everyone singing “Happy Birthday” to Meto. It was hilarious. He was keenly aware of the foreigners in the room during this. Koichi looked over at us during his cute singing. I heard Tsuzuku more toward the end - Mia really must have been happy not to have a mic again - Tzk just projects, haha.

Meto would have died if he kept the outfit on, so he ditched it at some point. The staff guys came out and cleaned everything up. Finally, Tsuzuku used his mic again and started playing around. He announced Meto was 6 years old (the age of the band this year), to which I have to wonder how he was able to drink highball then...Tzk also put on the glasses for a bit.

It was really sweet, and they were fucking talking about the sunshine thing again, and everyone was just as confused as we were. Then it finally became clear that they would be starting the encore.

I knew it was coming - I had been warned, but it didn’t mean I wasn’t dying because of it. Tsuzuku screams into the microphone: “TO-RO-SHI-NA!!!” I’m energized, so I’m screaming back - but this is the most intense song they have. It lasted for ten minutes at least - it could have been longer. Essentially, this is clapping, yelling, and running back and forth. It’s so much fun!!!

So, I’m watching as Meto gets up from the drums, and has the drum tech sit down, showing him what beat he needs to keep. Then Meto kind of walks around on stage, and then he’s gone - I don’t remember when I lost sight of him, but I did. Mia, takes the same tech, and gives him his guitar, and decides he wants to try the drums (this was halfway through the song). It was then that we realized Meto was in the back, standing by the light/etc. booth, and was watching us all. Great, haha. Mia sits down and holds the beat for exactly 0.0003 seconds. Tsuzuku turns around, Koichi is laughing at him, Tzk tries to be like, “Yeah, drums are really difficult, do you want to try again?” @crucifyregret is yelling “you can do it!” in Japanese, of course - they start up again, and Mia instantly fails. For the first time that night, we hear him speak: “I couldn’t do it.” Lmao. I was dying. Tsuzuku was trying to cheer him up, but he immediately took his guitar back, and the tech was back in place. At some point, there was Meto on the stage. He just walked through the audience (I think) and jumped right up there. He walked around onstage again. When he came over to our side it was really exciting - we had to show our Fukui pride by screaming extra loud at him. He knows @crucifyregret is from Fukui, and now he knows I stay there as well (I wrote him a letter), so that was cool.

When Meto finally got back to the drumset, we still had more Toroshina, haha. It was so exhausting, but it was certainly a lot of fun.

Ah, it was a really good live. It wasn’t the best. There were some shitty things about it, but overall, it was a Mejibray live...so, I can’t really complain, right? We also kind of assumed that maybe the second row just wasn’t our thing, and we also figured 'what were the odds of ever getting such good tickets again?' (then we got our tickets for the Osaka FC live, lol.)

Fukui Chop was one of my favorite venues, though. The end of the show was as it normally was, except that Meto spent a lot of time thanking everyone with hand gestures and facial expressions - it was very sweet.

Trying to get out of there for the cheki line was incredibly difficult, though. I also found myself annoyed, once again, because some foreigners cut the merch line. I know this because they were a bit behind us, and then when we were still wrapped up in the line, I watched as one of the spots opened (two staff members were working the line), and the one girl jumped off of the line and went and got cheki, bringing her friend with her. It’s simple etiquette. There are things to be cutthroat about, definitely, but can we please stop perpetuating awful stereotypes as foreign fans?

Again, those are just my feelings on the matter. It’s just frustrating is all.

Otherwise, it was fun. I’m happy we live in Fukui and were able to attend the shows even though they were on a Monday and a Tuesday!

I want to talk about the FC shows and my last couple of days in Japan, including the instores, but you guys will have to wait a little longer for all of that. I’m still pretty busy this semester even though I’m not teaching at the moment. Thanks for the support and all, though! I know that these reports are very skewed because it’s all my perspective, but I like being able to share some stuff with you guys - it’s difficult when you don’t have the opportunity to see them, and I don’t really see many other people writing reports about their experiences. At least I can give you a small taste of what it’s like, at least through my own lens. I hope they’re somewhat enjoyable to read, haha.

I went to the Osaka show, both Osaka events, then the Nagoya event and the Nagoya FC show. I’m not too sure yet how I’ll split up these reports, but they will get done.

The absolute way this entire track slaps--vocals, raps, adlibs, lyrics, choreo, outfit, the concept! EXO literally redefined dark concept like no other kpop group has done before and I won't go too into it because the MV as a whole is too brilliant to not be analysed by itself so I'll get into details then

TROUBLE :

Kai's "cool hago, mareun smooth hage" adds three years to my lifespan every single time I hear it, first off • The verses' slow beat building to the chorus' timed pace with that "trouble oooooh" is iust glorious, and the entire "good feels bad, bad feels good, wrong feels right, right feels wrong" is so addicting, it stays in your head on repeat • Kai's "Baby you're my goddess" is the single greatest goddess line ever sung after "Neon areumdawa neoneun goddess" (c. Monster) • Kim Jongdae's bridge, sweet lORD UGH

JEKYLL :

Okay this. Is my favourite track on the entire album so imma go off • Baek's smooth intro slowly transitioning into Jongdae's and then Chanyeol's smooth as fuck vocals before Jongin's and then. Then. The build to the pre-chorus with Baek's tone going slightly ominous "its do or die for me" followed by Dae's soft "its coming. Get ready." • After the creepy "warning", Them! All! Singing! Like! This! • Baek's moan • Dae's almost pleading as he asks "why are you pushing me away" • Again! This! As! They! Vehemently! Sing! "I'm! In! Control! Of! You!" • The way they've captured the whole concept of Jekyll, fighting with an alterego inside of you, with the slow build-up to the creepy, ominous prechorus that transitions into the chorus which is like a struggle as they try to quieten and plead with each other with the vehement yelling followed by the soft creepy pleas, its like the voices in your head that trying to overpower each other to be heard, its so perfect • Kai's "oh my my" • Baek's adlibs at Dae's and Junmyeon's part in the second verse • I love that Dae does both the "its coming, get ready" parts cause his voice just flows so perfectly and gives the exact vibe • the "oohs" in the choruses that everyone's dubbing as moans and I can't get over them cause they're equal parts-creepy, equal parts-sexy, you know the ones I'm talking about

GROOVE :

Okay tHIS ONE. this one stays in your head, I had it stuck in my head throughout the exam, the way I had to struggle to not hum out loud • Baek's voice fits this song soooo perfectly, the smooth sultry beginning and Dae's honey vocals' "tell me you'll stay" with the "oh, oh ohhh" at the back is just sooo lulling • the way the beat just pICKS UP • the entire chorus, the way they almost sing it in one breath and Baek's "I just wanna make you grooooove, babe", it shone so much for me throughout this song, his voice is so perfect for this kinda subtly-flirty and sexy vibe • SeChan's entire fucking part made my jaw drop at the way the beat changed and their rap-off just so smoothly transitioned and came through • this music. The flute. The tune right after Yeol's "urin pajjeodeureo kkuuuume" will stay in your head on loop, istg • the way all three members drag out and sing the "kkuuuume" right at the end of the chorus • special shoutout to my man Baek's "grooooove, babe" *falls dead*

YA YA YA :

Okay the second this song starts and the "you're the ooooooone" plays, all I can think of is how Kyungsoo would have made this song his bitch • the entire summer bop vibe this song has, it sounds like something you'd wake up to on a late Sunday afternoon, the retro vibes literally made me recall waking up in time for lunch to the radio blaring songs like these as a kid • who tf does retro vibe like EXO, literally who • that song that'll make you just bop your head along and then before you realise it, you're singing aloud "do you love me, do you love me not" and yelling "YA YA YA" cause those are the lines that do you in • still mad that Kyungsoo isn't part of this, I can just imagine how happy and passionate he'd have been performing this live ugh • I absolutely LOVE the way both ChenBaek sing "paboro mandeureoseo" it sounds soooo good • "baby give me some, cause imma give you some" looplooplooploOP • I love that they started and ended the song in the same way with the "you're the ooooone"

BABY YOU ARE :

This is one of the most summery songs I've heard of theirs in a long time and completely took me off guard cause I expected a ballad from the name or anything but tHIS • beach vibes, sunroof of the car down while you stay up, arms raised as the wind whips the hair in your face • the kinda song that you picture them singing with flirty lil smiles while you grin really hard until your cheeks hurt • Jongin shines so so much on this song, I dont think people give him enough credit for his vocals like yes, he ain't the vocal line but his voice is exactly the way he dances--honey-like and sultry beneath a fierce demeanour, his voice is husky and deep but there's a smoothness that flows when he sings summer romance bops like these in which it just shines gloriously (and this entire album has so much more of his clear vocals and it sounds so so heavenly that I'm actually falling for it bAEK CATCH ME)

NON-STOP :

HEY! A LIL BIT OF LOVE! MY LOVE NON STOP! The way the piano caught me off guard at the beginning right as it becomes -> beach! summer! sunny! I saw a lot of tweets talking about how they found this placement of the tracks in the album kinda off because of the positive vibe as compared to the rest and the fact that they're consecutively placed but I actually appreciate that cause it kinda fits well right after Baby You Are, the mood is more perky and uplifted + BYA sets the mood for this one • also if BYA is flirty smiles and setting off fluttering butterflies in your stomach, this one is just your heart pounding and your head banging as you yell the chorus as loud as you can • like, can you imagine the fanchants? "KKABEULKA! KKABEULKA!" "HEY! A LIL BIT OF LOVE! MY LOVE NONSTOP!" brooo the hype i can't even imagine without getting excited • the retro vibes again + summer + refreshing + its just so fuCKING FUN I DONT GET HOW PEOPLE ARE VOTING THIS AS A SKIP SHSNWJ

DAY AFTER DAY :

Kim Junmyeon's "geure bicheon nawaaaaaa" the lilt in his voice at the nawa the fUCKING LILT, MAN, CAN SOMEONE SAY HONEY • Baek's vocals and the adlibs and Jongdae's all of them blending together in a perfect honeyed harmony with Jongin at the end • Chanyeol. Fucking Chanyeol's singing voice has me weak • this song is like chilly evenings, watching the rain while "oneul doo" fills the room and makes you feel warm in all their vocals and the soothing music

BUTTERFLY EFFECT :

okay the intro had me already • I expected a very quick-paced fast beat song cause LDN like Monster but this was such a pleasant surprise • The chorus is soooo... idk how to explain it but it makes me feel really warm, like I can feel the song rushing through my veins and just exploding from within, the "you're saving my liiiiiife" with the "oh oh oh yeah yeah" in the back and "sara jijima" makes me feel so warm + "angel in my life" gets me grinning too, the warmth in their voices when they sing it, it honestly does bring butterflies • this is the kinda song you play during a long ride in the car late at night when you're on the highway and the kind that isn't toooo loud neither tooo soft but just the right vibe for a night drive • also @starlight-linguist pointed out that Obsession ends with "negeseo sarajyeo" which means get away from me while Butterfly Effect's last line is "sarajiji ma" (don't leave me) and that's just so fucking incredible and clever and brilliant • "angel angel angel" tell me you don't feel like blasting this as loud as possible in the car after hearing that, I dare you

OBSESSION isn't just one of the greatest albums of the year, its one of the greatest of all time and of all of EXO's discography, the versatility in all the tracks is surreal, they took this concept and went to fucking town with it -> the beats, the lyrics, the vocals, SeChan's raps, Jongin's honey vocals, Junmyeon's vocal range, Jongdae's literal versatility with every single fucking track and vibe, Baekhyun's adlibs and destroying every song as per usual, all of it is just the most incredible thing I've heard all year and I mean this in an as unbiased manner as possible but if you aren't listening to EXO, you're seriously missing out
