Positioning Louis as the "Edwardian wife who becomes trapped by her husband" in a literal sense does no justice to analyzing his actual place and role as a Black man in his society and in his relationship with Lestat. Any interpretation or analysis you do of him when it comes to their relationship cannot be stripped of the racial aspect because it's constantly there. Texts analyzing Edwardian wives (and particularly ones this fandom loves to bring up) typically were white and the dissection of their place in societal rules are always viewed from the aspect of gender that is within these texts only allowed to white women, but never to Black men or even Black women. And gender and race become inseparable when you discuss the latter, no matter how people may view it.
This is why I can't take this approach to analyzing Louis' story seriously because if you don't consider the racial aspect in his relationship even to himself and his sexuality, what's the point? You're still centering the standards that were more placed upon white male/female couples than you're willing to look into the unique structure of Black families, religion, their view of homosexuality and how that sooner heavily influences Louis than the family's "need" for him to be sold off to an Edwardian husband. Even in Louis' own story, him and Claudia being Black is more centered on than any demeaning "housewife" comment he tries to go against from Claudia's perspective. She makes that comment once, whereas we have at least two episodes from Louis' perspective that have very blatant hints and showings of the racism he still suffers from under the Jim Crow era and how it affects his self-worth as well as his relationship with Lestat who doesn't seem to take into consideration how any of the blatant racial aggressions and objections still affect Louis and what he considers to be important to achieve in his own life.
Then there's also the pointed topic of Louis' position as a Black man who is a pimp to the Black women he has as sex workers, as well as how his position as a Black father affects Claudia, another Black girl. If you insist on Louis being centered as this "Edwardian white wife" who is confined by his implicit gender in his marriage, where does that leave Claudia and the blatant misogyny and disrespect she gets from both him and Lestat? Lestat who is her white father abuses her. Positioning Louis within the strict confines of "being her mother" doesn't do her any favors because he didn't hesitate to choke her when he was deeply emotionally distressed, nor does it make him look any better when he's fine with chopping up her diaries and then delivering them on a silver platter so that Daniel, another white man, can read and dissect. Even if he does this under the sole pretense of "doing right by her", how does it in any way help when he also can't face up to his failures towards her?
#interview with the vampire#claudia#louis de pointe du lac#i just feel like all these needless 'Lestat is the patriarchy' discussions; even when done in order to shield Louis#do him and Claudia no favors because y'all keep centering these weird strictly white standards in your interpretations#'Louis is an Edwardian wife' Louis is a Black man who was turned in 1910s Louisiana#the structural confines Edwardian wives were given really aren't the same when you take into consideration the racial segregation#of Louis' time; and I feel like the specific issues that Black men then faced when it came to 'proving' their worth when it comes to gender#are then just sidelined and forgotten as if those aren't the standards Louis grew up with#if you want to discuss Louis' placement in his relationship with Lestat it's kind of really heavy-handed even on the show#that he's a black man and that that heavily affects him foremostly in this relationship#also I'm so confused over this insane idea that Lestat is somehow the patriarchy while Louis is a woman and y'all say this unprompted#without considering how it looks when you call a gay black man a woman and a white bisexual man a guy#i feel like you can evade bad stereotypes of painting black men as overaggressive without veering off into the whole other side#while still sounding vaguely backhanded#and it doesn't make it any less weird when I see other non-black/white fans insist on this interpretation#it just comes off as y'all sooner being able to connect to Louis if you see him in a role typically embodied by white women#than to refer to the actual identity he has as a black gay man

Would you ever consider being a third to Mel and Jayce?
This is a...very strange question. A few things- Jayce and Mel are no longer together, from what I know. At least I would assume that is still true. I am also...homosexual, so I experience no attraction to women at all. So...bluntly, no, I would not consider such. I have much respect for Mel, and I...well, Jayce is very important to me- but even in a hypothetical this would...not really work.

genuinely asking, how does the things you said, and i mean everything, apply or work when the transmasc doesn't pass as a cis man? does he still have privilege?
That's a reasonable question and the answer to it is where things get way more complicated.
Trans men who don't pass primarily do not receive benefits of male privilege in any overt manner and will not have as much of the systemic power as a cis man by far. They will have even less claim to it than cis men who are effeminate. However there are a few variables that could lead to plausible utilize of the category of man- even if it's more difficult. This is common in some things that I used to see going around like advice to be more masculine that was based on toxic masculinity.
Get rid of everything you once loved that is too fem, refuse to wear color, become aggressive and cruel, be meaner, take up more space, refuse to move to the side when someone is walking towards you only women move, etc. Those things are specifically coming from trying to fit in with the cissexist patriarchal "man" rather than men as a masculine class of people. The push to behave in certain manners to be seen as more male is to reaffirm what manhood is- and sometimes people sadly push to reaffirm toxic masculinity. This is by far not the majority but it is indeed a subtle way that trans men can end up unintentionally playing into systemic issues. This usually comes from younger trans guys and by younger I mean children. It's understandable that a lot of people's views on men would be formed in this way.
You may also gain a form of privilege by not being targeted by specific rhetoric or laws that target trans women or specifically those with the same gender marker as you (if you've already changed it) though in cases like we're seeing in my country, the USA, the gender marker will change nothing and you'll be attacked by misogynistic laws regardless. This comes into an odd area of limbo where there's numerous asides and notes and specificities that makes it possible to either be present or not. And the more common privilege that is gained is privilege to not be treated as a trans woman which isn't the same as male privilege and usually also means you get the disprivilege of being treated as a trans man.
Not one transmasculine person can ever hold the same level of power that cis men do in the patriarchy. Even the most stealth and interpersonally misogynistic example you could come up with could easily be dwarfed in impact by the actions of numerous cisgender men. However the ability to be those things without your own rhetoric being applied to yourself as you are obviously not a woman does mean that there's more privilege than when a women who was just as misogynistic would be in the same position. (That was a generalized you I don't believe the anon is misogynistic to be clear).
So yes he would have some privilege over women to a degree that doesn't lead to that massive of an impact, however it's still there and it's important to try to not fall into traps. Part of the pressure while you transition is the pressure to conform to cissexist ideas of man or woman. You don't have to be the overly strong breadwinner who hates his wife and has a man cave and prefers his bro time. You can be loving father, a devoted lover, a solitary man who makes his life his own and wonderous, an author, a painter, anything you desire. You can rely on others and be kind. You can also be weak. There is nothing wrong with not being the ideal man in the eyes of cis people.
Once again I want to emphasize that this is not how all trans men act nor are all going to have power themselves. However the plausibility or capability to utilize certain forms of systemic oppression while not misgendering yourself is a privilege. Transfems cannot experience those specific things without forcing themselves into the closet and further causing harm to them (though that doesn't defend people with internalized issues acting poorly). I believe there are other ways women specifically can uphold patriarchal ideas that are less common than men to do and may eventually talk about that.
Basically non-passing trans men have severely less male privilege than passing trans men. But they have like the smallest amount to where internalized misogyny getting externalized tends to not be self hating as much as it is harmful to others because they're men and not women.

CLEARLY the solution to transmisogyny is to force intersex people out of the trans community, a place they definitely have power and a voice in. this sort of thing can only help your case and has never harmed the queer community before. in fact we should be using words invented by transmedicalists to show the intersex members of our community how unwelcome they are

Ep 5!!!
#Episodes that make me go “The author has never talked with a woman ever” 😓😓😓#I don't like how Lucy's character is handled at all. And I feel like I can't talk about it because I'm just going to sound like a bitter–#ss/kk shipper... But I really don't like it. And if it can help my case I'm a multishipper so I really don't take any–#issues with atsu/lucy I like the ship quite a lot actually.#So you're telling me there's this girl... Who meets this boy who pretty much ruined her life by directly causing her to lose her job...#And the next time she sees him she's going to sacrifice her own freedom for him as well as tell him “when you're done doing your things–#come and save me” (longest ewwww ever)... And when she regains freedom (author didn't bother to explain how because they don't care)–#she goes to work... As a waitress at the café beneath his workplace. So he can keep doing his Cool Superpowers Job while she literally–#must serve him every time he visits the place. It's just ?????????????????????????????????#Look‚ I don't dislike Lucy and I feel general affection towards her. It's just that they make her act like no one ever would#Just for the sake of the plot I guess#And like I knoww it's (probably just a little) more nuanced than that. I know Lucy is living her own fairy tale fantasy.#It's just that what I've said about her story is still true‚ you know?#I'm sorry but as sweet as atsu/lucy can be. I really hate the author for making Lucy a waitress. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.#It's so weird. This anime has women writing standards that feel like dating back to the 20s#Same with Katai and the ideal woman tbh. Like why are women to be seen as this abstract impersonal entities? Why can't they just be people?#Ideal for WHO. It's like super screwed up of a concept. What even is an ideal woman? What does it mean to be a woman anyways?#They just want to say “ideal wife”. But women aren't made to be wives their existence isn't functional to another person.#Sorry. I derail. Next episode is going to be even worse on this front ughhhh#Back to the episode: once again it really shows they were running out of budget with this season‚‚‚ the animation looks very suffered#Too many flashback also... I feel bad for the animators tbh#I don't really like the shift in art style :( Not even Atsushi I found particularly pretty this episode my heart cries#The nail pulling thing made me feel like throwing up afhsjyabfsbfwasfvb I feel like I can bear worse gore but there's a couple of little–#specific things I can't stand and this seems to be one of them pffftttt#I like Higuchi I think she's both very funny and cool. I really wish she was explored more (but then again looking at Teruko... )#The relationship between Kunikida and Katai looks so interesting even though we only get glimpses of it. Kunikida regrets Katai leaving–#the ada but is also happy for him but also worries for him. He comes to his house seemingly to check on him and starts cleaning around.#The way he loves him and cherishes their friendship and shared history is really evident and it makes for a compelling dynamic.#Perhaps I should read their short story... In any case. Going to someone's house and compulsively start doing the dishes half out of will–#to help out half because he can't bear the mess sounds a lot like something I'd do lol

2024 reads / storygraph
Song of the Huntress
historical fantasy set in 8th century Britain
follows three characters:
a woman who has spent centuries leading the wild hunt & reaping souls after being tricked into it, who disguises herself as a human to enter the kingdom
the queen of Wessex who never lives up to the demands of the court, despite leading their people in battle - and after a battlefield defeat they turn against her
and her husband, the king, deals with magic and political upheaval as his brother tries to usurp him and conflict arises between new and old religions
bi woman MC, lesbian MC, ace man MC
#Song of the Huntress#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#This is - okay? some very interesting and complex characters#i liked the women of the wild hunt and I liked how aethelburg as a warrior queen is just sort of normal not some kind of girlboss thing#it’s very slow paced - I doubt I would have gotten through it if not for the audiobook#the historical setting and details and complexity of the plot is interesting#I did read it for the ace character so:#unsure how i feel about how his asexuality's the reason for the problem in their relationship. like the book tries to make it the issue tha#he didn't TELL her about it but.....but ultimately it is just his asexuality as the issue. idk. not that I don't think that this kind of#ace narrative shouldn’t be explored I guess. it was just a smidge too portrayed as him being the problem#I feel like if he were aroace at least it’d be like okay; she finds in someone else what he doesn’t want to give her#but he literally does love her romantically lol. which makes the subplot of the romance between the women like......ok she's cheating#bc her husband won't fuck her? not to minimise complex characters down to surface level ships but also….#the sapphic relationship is kinda undeveloped/insta attraction and not much else -the book is conscious of this &#I don't think it tries that much to convince us it's something more than that (other than how it affects the character's personal journeys)#but still. idk. I guess I do like that it doesn't conform to perfect-narrative-romances but evidently unsure about how it did so#this makes it sound like I hated the asexuality and the sapphic relationship - I didn't hate either I just didn't love them lol#also his sister is also aroace and becomes a nun and otherwise she's offscreen - lost opportunity imo!
