Separate the art from the artist is bullshit, bc the media you're consuming didn't just spawn out of nothingness. It becomes even more important that you continue consuming the media but through a critical lens and detect the parts of the artist that bled through in their work. HOWEVER creating a distinction between media and its fanbase is absolutely valid and NECESSARY. okay bye
#malsog#i created a speech in the shower about taylor swift and what i think about the people who 'hate' her#one day i will type out the whole thing#also this is what i think about neil gaiman- good omens and jk rowling- harry potter because you cant boycott media bc it has a problematic#author or creator. alot of classic works have obviously bigoted writers. you continue consuming the work while becoming increasingly aware#of its flaws.#isnt that the point of literature?#how a story is written should help you identify prejudices/bigotry/ideologies that the writer possesses and how you react to media should#point out your own attitude/blind spots/ignorance towards how social issues are tackled#it should educate you on your own values and how to fill those gaps#reread harry potter and become increasingly aware of rowling's shitty personality affects how she portrays her characters#esp minorities

bonus horse brought to you by myself reading buddhist literature once again
#long time no see titania my beloved#anyways. here she is with a dandelion as i was reading peace is every step#and thich nhat hanh speaks about giving your smile to a dandelion for safe keeping until you can smile again#i think its a good way to live personally. today might suck balls but tomorrow i can always smile again#because i simply left my smile with a dandelion in the meantime#just because it isnt there now does not mean it has dissappeared. something within nothing i suppose#but isnt that the whole point of the matter anyways#I'll probably go back to reading dōgen's works later actually#but peace is every step is the least depricating thing i can read when im in a melancholy mood#tbf though i think buddhist philosophy has done a world of good for my mental health. nothing matters *jazz hands*#nothing matters so you should strive for kindness and hope because making someone smile is worth everything#a little bit of kindness and action can go very very far and you simply must strive for compassion within your means#i do prefer zen buddhist literature though. makes more sense to me. but i like to read it all#bonus horse

drabbles about the deer imagery in The Secret History (specifically in relation 2 Camilla) because her becoming a deer/believing that she did stuck in my mind (although this post will mostly take Camilla and the other's recollection of events to be as they recount it – if i examine it in it's effect as an incorrect account, that would be in a separate post)
Obviously there's, on a meta level, an irony to it – Camilla and Charles are named to make fun of the Princess Diana scandal that was happening at the time, and so ironically Camilla transforms into an animal sacred to Diana.
There's also a parallel that I think could be interesting to make between Camilla and Taygete, who for anyone unfamiliar, was turned into a deer by Artemis to protect her from Zeus' sexual advances. Although I think that what happened in the Bacchae was concensual sexually, I think it could possible be indicative in Camilla's narrative role as the "wanted"/"desired" one within the greek class – by Charles, Henry, Richard (although he wasnt there) and even Francis, although he wants to be her more so than actually wanting her.
Additionally, outside of how it actually functions within the story, her transformation into a creature associated so closely with innocence, especially in relation to Diana/Artemis' virginity, might perhaps be tied to Richards view of her as this "pure" and "virginal" person – obviously we know this is far from the truth, and he himself learns this later, but I think it definitely ties into this flawed angelic idea of her he so covets.
I think this interpretation ties into the myth of Actaeon (in terms of "deer transformation myths") although its very interesting to me that they different at key points – Camilla, the "virginual" character, is the one transformed, rather than the sexual transgressor (Charles) or the one who introduces miasma (Henry). But, like Actaeon, she is pursued and hunted – which, another key point – Actaeon is pursued and killed by his own hunting dogs, and Charles returns from the ritual with a bite mark, perhaps tying him into the myth thurther?
#sillies sillies#gay people will really write 5 paragraphs of analysis about a book written in the nineties instead of studing#(talking about himself)#~350 words isnt much BUT i dont write much literature analysis 4 myself outside of class#so I'm quite happy with this#feel free 2 add stuff on 🫡 I'm more familiar with Homer's works (and bits of Ovid) than i am wider greek myths#so if im missing any interesting deer transformation myths let me know :D#LOVE carmilla. obviously as flawed as any character but she's so interesting 2 me#both of the twins are honestly. what the fuck was their childhoods like that made them like that#cause. we know bits and pieces about francis and Henry's childhoods#and obviously Richard's#but i feel like we know so little about the twin's...#anyways#the secret history#the kat speaks#camilla macaulay#charles macaulay#francis abernathy#henry winter#richard papen#again not tagging buns cause hes not in here#although i wanna talk about his youth imagery @ some point#he's very Paris 2 me /pos#LOATH henry (ik hes as complex as the rest of them but he just rubs me up the wrong way. dont even hate him 4 the murder) but i really wish#i could hear his opinions on the character of the iliad#WHAT DID HE THINK OF PANDARUS. my boy my love#asshole in my class civ class who's name is very similar 2 henry's called him stupid... arse#he literally ticks every box of the homeric hero whats not to love#anyways. absolutely ESSAY of a post and tags#soz guys

my top controversial Zim headcanon is that Zim actually performs absurdly well at skool because
1. he's a perfectionist with a compulsive reaction to ANY system of scoring
2. I 100% believe test scores are this guy's forte because he had to become an Invader SOMEHOW and he sure as hell wasn't passing based on the practical
3. He has hyper-advanced alien AI to do his homework for him. like come on.
meanwhile Dib is really only scraping by on raw intelligence and the inherent educational advantage of having a mad scientist father. He doesn't have TIME to study, there's an evil alien he has to stalk and besides, you know what's better than a high school diploma? The Nobel Peace Prize for proving the existence of extraterrestrial life.
#invader zim#zim#dib#zadp#iz posting#natterings#not actually my top controversial headcanon but i believe in working your way up to the cancelable stuff#anyway dib may or may not get more serious with it as he gets older#but at twelve years old i do not believe for a minute this kid gives a fuck about grades handed to him by stupid people#hes probably doing pretty okay at math and any sciences but i dont even want to IMAGINE how he performs on say#literature#he doesnt have time to read a whole BOOK hes trying to save the world here#though naturally if anyone pointed out to him that hey isnt it fucked up the literal alien is doing better in human subjects than you#we'd see a turn around REAL fast#that or hed just spend all his time trying to prove that zims been cheating which#yeah not likely to get him very far

why does l apologize so much during the foot drying scene? seems ooc
Hmmm, I agree wichu, I feel it's a bit out of character for the original manga!L to do something like that. In some ways the anime versions of the characters are a bit different than the manga ones, and the manga ones are the ones I'm usually thinking about when I'm thinking about characterization 'n' such.
My best guess about it is that anime!L is going through something like the first hints of character development at this point? It's definitely an emotional change to how he's been acting and interacting with Light up until this scene (which is kinda a little bit of a gripe I have with episode 25... I certainly don't hate it, and I'm very fond of the rain scene and think it's iconic and interesting in its own way. I just think that they didn't build up to it super well in the previous episodes, and that it therefore feels a bit out of nowhere and emotionally out of sync with how they've been setting everything up between L and Light until this point).
Anyway, I think L is feeling sad and worried about how things are going to go from here on out (as Light has regained his memories and suddenly been acting very ominously like Kira again, and from what I remember I think L pretty much knows that after they do this next test on the notebook one or the other of them are probably going to actually die/lose?) And based on some of the stuff he says I think he is realizing that he doesn't actually have any close relationships or people he can truly trust and open up to in his life, which seems to be a bit of a regret of his now. I think he obviously felt some sort of a kinship with Light that he'd genuinely never felt before as well (as imo the "first ever friend" scene is both sarcastic/ironic and sincere at the same time, if that makes sense). And I think even though he is dropping the mind games for a moment and trying to have an actual heart-to-heart with Light that Light can't actually reciprocate it due to the circumstances, which maybe just reaffirms to L how alone he really is (that even the one person he actually felt something like a friendship with still can't be trusted or be somebody he can have an honest conversation with). I feel like L sort of just moves things to some sort of symbolic physical way of connecting with Light instead (which seems to be a biblical reference to Jesus washing Judas' and the other disciples' feet, like saying "I know you're going to betray me / but I forgive you anyway" or some such thing?) And maybe the apology is just because he's genuinely feeling a bit awkward and unsure of himself and humbled and like he's actually going to lose to Light soon, but idk.
Even if it's not REALLY something I can picture manga!L doing, and even though I genuinely prefer manga!L's characterization in most ways, I also think it was interesting of the anime to put a moment in where one of them tries to temporarily drop the games for a little bit, and where they both seem to be genuinely feeling a bit soft with each other and regretful that they hadn't met another way.
#if you have ever heard of that category of characters that i think is called 'iconic characters'#where they can stay interesting and likable to an audience even despite having no character development from episode to episode#like idk james bond or any of the super famous classic detectives in literature/tv. they're kinda supposed to never change#or never think that they truly need to change. and i think L is actually one of those kind of characters#so giving him character development isnt REALLY the point of his character or always an improvement of his writing to me#however idk i still like that scene as its own thing#l lawliet#ask#anon#death note#p

Everyday I see another youtube video or whatever say smth along the lines of "this character is badly written because they're unlikable/annoying/insert negative description here" and everyday I end up massively disappointed because I came here for analysis on the actual writing of a character not just a description of the feelings they made you experience
#rat rambles#like when criticizing a character's writing its important to understand that a character being unlikable to you isnt always a failing on#the writing and when it is you have to actually explain Why it doesnt work in the context of the story and narrative for it to be#meaningful criticism in my opinion#for example a lot of ppl complain abt unlikable protagonists in very unproductive ways imo#because narratively speaking protagonists who kind of suck ass as people very much can have their place#so I always get disappointed when I see ppl talk abt the cases where I agree that theyre poorly written and not getting any elaboration#upon the initial 'they do bad things and are a bad person therefore I dont like them'#like there are plenty of ways for a character to be unlikable and a bad person or whatever#just please explain to me Why you think that the character themself was misandled or otherwise poorly written without listing their crimes#like for example. and lets all get our long sighs out first. sighhhhhhh. ok. shuichi.#hes a bit of a prick. anytime Ive seen criticism of his character it basically amounts to that statement.#and that doesn't at all adress any of the actual numerous problems with how hes written.#thats just a description of a character trait. which isnt a writing flaw on its own.#the reason him being an ass is a problem is that he is meant to be and written as a camera pov protag#so all of his judgy bullshit is meant to be how the audience feels too. which causes problems in a game where you're supposed to give a#shit abt the cast and want to hang out with them and get attached before they die horribly#and this is a problem that exists in all dr games ofc but shuichi just makes it most obvious because the v3 cast was built with a lot more#malice than the other two casts generally speaking#ok thats enough shuichi talk Im so sorry for making yall see that I promise it wont happen again its just the easiest example to draw#basically: poorly written characters are pretty much never that way because of any isolated traits they have as people#its about How they are written and positioned in the narrative#saying a character is bad because theyre annoying or unlikable is just saying theyre bad because you dont like them#and its plenty easy to not like well written characters so if you wanna make a real point then stop just writing a callout doc#like half the time your issue is with narrative framing not with the traits themselves talk about that instead thats much more interesting#and I Dont mean 'oh a character we're supposed to like shouldn't have this negative trait' because thats also unproductive#generally speaking saying that any certain character trait is inherently linked with bad writing beyond being a sentiment I disagree with#is also just not a very helpful statement for actually understanding what the actual problem is#and for me the why is what character and literature analysis is all about#and in terms of media criticism its especially important since you don't exactly learn anything by being told a character is unlikable

i have this oddly specific idea for a fyozai fic where one of them is ill and the other one nurses the other back to health and it's a weird power play thing and there is no gay sex but it very much is about gay sex
#despite the fact fyodor is the one canonically with a weak constitution i picture him as the caretaker here tbh#and dazai is very out of it and fyodor is 100% getting off on having this much power over him.#and then something something hatred that twists and blurs into almost love.......affection that is poisonous........ something something..#this is vaguely based on a hannigram piece i read once. because when isnt it about hannigram when i think of fyozai#they should eat peoole at this point tbh#my posts#bungo stray dogs#fyozai#osamu dazai#fyodor dostoyevsky#tagging their real names is a bit mean.. sorry for people looking for literature content. best i can do is freak4freak anime boy hatesex

Booktok discourse is mostly stupid, but a part of it I have never seen addressed is how reading communities on the Internet in general treat classical literature and how that intersects with foreign literature.
I want to preface this with the fact that this is not booktok exclusive - anti-classics sentiment has had its time on bookblr, bookgram, and booktube. Tiktok is still considered a new social media platform, it's communities are going through the growing pains all social media communities go through. This is just a broader issue I've encountered in reading circles generally.
Basically, it becomes very common for people to start bragging about never reading classics and hating classics, encouraging their followers and mutuals to avoid classics, etc. The issue here is that, when it comes to translated works, foreign classic literature is often the most accessible foreign lit there is. You CAN find modern foreign literature which has been translated into English, but it's often harder and more expensive than foreign classics. By discouraging reading classical literature, a lot of people end up accidentally encouraging their mutuals to avoid foreign literature just because of accessibility reasons.
I was 14 when I got into bungou stray dogs (2016), and that was the first community of readers I was in that really encouraged the kids in the fandom to seek out and read classics. Book fandoms were some of the first fandoms I ever joined when I was 11/12, but it took an anime fandom focused on a manga that's basically an RPG Japanese (and later American, Russian, British, and French) Authors Mafia Fantasy AU to finally find people who encouraged reading not only classics, but foreign classics.
With the internet, fan translations of books published abroad are becoming more common, but the majority of people are going to be reading those books which they can find at their local library or book store - they're not going to be searching for unofficial translations posted to WordPress of foreign literature.
To discourage reading classic literature often ends up discouraging reading foreign literature just because of how the book translation market is.
#ramblings#this isnt well thought out but i think my point is made#booktok#bookblr#bookgram#classics#classical literature#translation#translated literature

I wrote an essay in the tags because i cant decide
1. Yes they have to fight, 2. Tell me who’s fighting who in the tags! (I’ll add the most ridiculous combos in a reblog)
#Depends on so many factors#Is this in the literature club?#Is an sburb session happening#Is it neither?#Is monika a person or a file in a pc?#But just to entertain the idea of a full out brawl#This is a 5'3 16 year old against an ambiguous height 13 year old alien#If this is like a life or death fight#I gotta hand it to gamzee...#He has a defined weapon of choice. Troll strength bs. In or out of an sburb session i think he wins#But also my other fav (The nightmare from slay the princess)#Lets say monika isnt afaird of her so her organs dont shut down instantly#And also just for fun let's give her the pristine blade so she has something to kill with#I think it's an actually fair fight#If its monika going into the basement to kill her like in the game then she's screwed unless she does some mega smart manipulator stuff#If it's a fair fighting groud (like a plain faild or something) and they both have intent to kill... Im not sure actually#We don't see the nightmare fight. But she doesn't need too. She has such a high intimadation stat that the heros organ fucking fail#She has her teleporting and flickering in and out of sight. But there isnt a definitive fight with her at any point.#So anyway#Unless someone can pull me one side or the other im not voting yet#Too many factors for gamzee#Not enough knowledge for the nightmare#Also rip monika

WHEREIN: taehyun realizes your opposing personalities might just complement each other in unexpected ways
彡 pairing: college!tyun x reader 彡 genre: fluff 彡 warnings: mild language, kissing
SEUL SPEAKS! this isnt part of the plot but i just have to say that taehyun is so literature major-coded
° ⊹.📜` read the whole collection here!
you’ve always been the life of the party. vibrant, extroverted, and spontaneous, you thrive in social settings, drawing energy from the people around you. on the other hand, taehyun was the polar opposite. quiet, reserved, and contemplative, he preferred the comfort of a good book and the serenity of his own thoughts.
it was a mystery to your friends how the two of you ended up together, but to you, it made perfect sense. there was something comforting about the way taehyun grounded you, bringing a sense of calm and stability to your otherwise chaotic world.
it all started during your college years. you were at a friend’s party, laughing and chatting animatedly with a group of people when you first noticed him. taehyun was standing in the corner, nursing a drink and observing the room with a detached sort of interest. intrigued, you made your way over to him, determined to break through his quiet demeanor.
“hey,” you greeted with a warm smile. “i’m y/n. enjoying the party?”
taehyun glanced at you, his eyes flickering with a hint of curiosity. “it’s alright,” he replied, his voice soft but clear. “i’m taehyun.”
“what are you doing over here all by yourself?” you asked, leaning against the wall beside him.
he shrugged, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “just people-watching. it’s interesting.”
you laughed, the sound light and musical. “well, you’re missing out on all the fun. come on, join us.”
taehyun hesitated for a moment, but something in your eyes convinced him to follow you. you led him to your group of friends, introducing him with enthusiasm. despite his initial reservations, taehyun found himself enjoying the lively conversation and your infectious energy.
from that night on, a delightful friendship blossomed between you two. you would drag taehyun to social gatherings, coaxing him out of his shell, while he introduced you to quiet coffee shops and libraries, offering you a glimpse into his world of introspection and tranquility.
───────── ౨ৎ ─────────
one of your favorite outings with taehyun was a visit to a local bookstore that had become somewhat of a sanctuary for the both of you. nestled in a quaint corner of the city, the bookstore was an oasis of tranquility amidst the bustling urban landscape. the faint scent of old books mixed with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee from the attached café created an atmosphere that was both inviting and comforting.
as you walked through the door, the bell above it chimed softly, announcing your arrival. you smiled at the familiar sight of tall wooden shelves filled with books of all genres, the muted lighting casting a warm glow over the cozy space. taehyun, with his usual calm demeanor, seemed perfectly at ease, his eyes already scanning the shelves for hidden treasures.
you spent hours together, browsing through the vast collection, discussing your favorite authors and recommending books to each other. taehyun had a knack for finding the most intriguing titles, often pointing out books you might have otherwise overlooked.
“have you read this one?” taehyun asked, holding up a well-worn copy of a classic novel. the cover was slightly faded, the pages yellowed with age, but it was clear that the book had been well-loved.
you took the book from him, flipping through the pages with interest. “no, but it looks interesting,” you replied. “i’ll have to check it out.”
taehyun’s eyes sparkled with delight at your response. “i think you’ll like it. the writing is beautiful. the author has this way of capturing emotions that’s really captivating.”
you smiled, touched by his enthusiasm. “i can’t wait then. you always have the best recommendations.”
as you continued to explore the bookstore, you found yourself drawn to a section filled with poetry books. taehyun noticed your interest and pulled a slim volume from the shelf, handing it to you with a gentle smile.
“this one’s a favorite of mine,” he said softly. “the poems are simple, but they have a depth to them that’s really moving.”
you opened the book and began to read, the words flowing off the page like a melody. it was clear why taehyun cherished it so much.
taehyun picked up a novel he had wanted to read, while you began to delve into the poetry book he had recommended. the quiet rustle of pages turning and the occasional soft sigh of contentment were the only sounds that filled the air.
these quiet moments with taehyun became a cherished part of your life, bringing a sense of calm and balance to your otherwise hectic existence. his presence was soothing, a steady anchor that grounded you. you found yourself looking forward to these peaceful interludes, the times when it was just the two of you, lost in the world of books and each other’s company.
───────── ౨ৎ ─────────
months turned into years, and your friendship deepened. you found yourself falling for taehyun’s quiet charm. he had a way of making you feel seen and heard in a way no one else ever had. and unbeknownst to you, taehyun had also developed feelings for you, drawn to your vivacity and warmth like a moth to a flame.
one evening, you found yourself at taehyun’s apartment, a cozy space filled with books and plants. you were sprawled on his couch, flipping through a magazine, while taehyun was seated at his desk, typing away on his laptop. the comfortable silence between you was a testament to the deep understanding and respect you had for each other’s space.
“hey, taehyun?” you called out, breaking the silence.
he looked up from his laptop, raising an eyebrow in a silent question.
“do you ever wonder how we became friends? i mean, we’re so different,” you mused, twirling a strand of hair around your finger.
taehyun leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. “i think that’s why it works. we balance each other out.”
you smiled, feeling a warm flutter in your chest. “yeah, i guess you’re right. it’s just… sometimes i wonder if you ever get tired of me dragging you to all these social events.”
taehyun’s eyes softened as he regarded you. “i don’t mind. i actually like seeing you in your element. it’s… refreshing.”
your heart skipped a beat at his words. taehyun rarely expressed his feelings so openly, and when he did, it always caught you off guard.
“thanks, tyun. that means a lot to me,” you said softly.
the evening wore on, and as the clock struck midnight, you decided it was time to head home. taehyun insisted on walking you to your car, a habit he had picked up over the years.
as you reached your car, you turned to face him, feeling a sudden rush of emotion. “taehyun, i—”
before you could finish your sentence, taehyun took a step closer, his gaze intense. “y/n, there’s something i need to tell you.”
your breath hitched as he continued, his voice steady but tinged with vulnerability. “i’ve been wanting to say this for a while, but i wasn’t sure how. i like you, more than a friend.”
your heart pounded in your chest as his words sank in. “taehyun, i… i like you too.”
a look of relief washed over his face, and without another word, he closed the distance between you, his lips capturing yours in a soft, tentative kiss. your arms instinctively wrapped around his neck as you melted into the kiss, savoring the warmth and tenderness of the moment.
the kiss was gentle at first, an exploration of newfound feelings. taehyun’s hands rested on your waist, his touch light as if he were afraid you might disappear. you could feel the hesitancy in his movements, a cautiousness born from the fear of crossing an invisible line. you responded with equal tenderness, letting him know through the press of your lips that this was something you both wanted.
as the initial surprise faded, the kiss deepened. taehyun’s grip on your waist tightened, pulling you closer against him. your fingers tangled in his hair, the softness of it sending shivers down your spine. the world around you seemed to blur, leaving only the two of you in a bubble of shared emotions.
when you finally pulled away for breath, your foreheads rested against each other. taehyun’s eyes were still closed, his breath coming in soft pants. you could feel the rapid beat of his heart against your own chest, a mirror of your own racing pulse.
“wow,” you whispered, a slight smile tugging at your lips. “that was...”
“incredible,” taehyun finished for you, opening his eyes to meet yours. there was a sparkle in his gaze, a mixture of relief and joy that made your heart swell.
you both laughed softly, the sound filled with a mix of nerves and happiness. the tension that had been building between you for months seemed to dissipate, replaced by a new sense of intimacy and connection.
the two of you stood there momentarily, wrapped in each other’s arms. the night air was cool against your skin, but the warmth from taehyun’s body kept you anchored in the moment. it was a perfect blend of the serene and the exhilarating.

In Defense of AFTG crazy plot
*disclaimer: I'm not comparing Frankenstain and AFTG, I'm using it as an famous example of plausibility in fiction*
*disclaimer 2: I'm translating plausibility from another language, maybe it is not the right word for what I'm meaning*
The greatest argument for claiming that AFTG is badly written is that isn't realistic, that it couldn't happen in the real world. But let me ask you a question, is Frankenstain a bad book because bringing people back to life isn't something that can happen in the real world? The answer is, of course, no. But why is it a good book when it isnt "realistic" Well, it has to do with plausibility.
The textbook definition of plausibility is something that seems believable, even if it is not. In fiction, this translates to make everything have sense while also bending the rules to let the story unfold. It cannot happen in real life but it has a logical process that make it believable, it makes sense that it happens. Of course the sci-fi genre has tons of technology we could only dream of, humans are constanstly developing it; yeah, this breaks the laws of physics, but humans found way. It isn't something that could happen in the real world, but it is plausible, it has a logical explination and we can believe it. In this fictional world, we don't question it because we aren't supposed to question it. While I put into more exagerated genres to explain it, this was meant for more close to reality genres.
The monster of Frankenstain existing isn't bad writing because even if it isn't "realistic" because it has a logical explination (research, investigation and experimentation about chemestry and human body -> bringing people back to life). An author can make changes to their world and it still can be consider it good written as long as it makes sense for this world that was created.
I think most complains about the crazyness of AFTG steam from forgetting this. To truly analyze a plot, you need to unlink crazy to bad.
Bad plot: no stakes, doesn't make sense, plot points are not linked to eachother, multiple plotholes that are too big to ignore
Good plot: decent stakes, actions have consequences, plot points interconnect
Crazy story is completely different from compelling storytelling. Actually, there are essays that argue that making stories plausible/100% real is opresive and ruins the potential of stories, like this essay by T. Lloyd Reilly. The plot points may not be likely to happen in real life, but they are consequences to an action, they follow a logical path, they makes sense even if they aren't "realistic". Let's cover some of these "crazy" plot points.
Ichirou letting Neil, Kevin and Jean live <- Neil offering Ichirou a reasonable deal (money and silence instead of just silence)
Andrew's induced mania state <- new medicine that only exists in the aftg universe and we know nothing about (and also, antidepressants can cause mania in patients with bipolar disorder, which Nora said Andrew has; more info and theories about in this post)
The mafia using an exy team for money laundering <- this happens a lot in real life actually, but with actual bussiness, like pizza places, restaurants and even a sports team was found to be a cover for the mafia
Exy popularizing quick <- campaing we know nothing about the lenghts it went by the creators / possible funds provided by the mafia to popularize it
Are these likely to actually happen in real life? Not really, but do they have a logical explination that within the universe Nora Sakavic created make sense? Yes. If it makes sense in this alternate version of reality, why is it bad writing?
AFTG doesnt stick to reality but it is a piece of fiction, it doesnt need to be like reality to be good (and not being like it is not a synonim for being bad). Asking literature to be 100% real is like asking the sky to be pink. It's impossible. But most importantly, if we keep media to actual real life stories, it would be so boring and repetive that no one would actually care to read.

"ford is aroace to me idk i cant imagine him being interested in romance/he's totally ace coded"
ok let's take inventory
every time ford dismisses romance he does it in relation to women. why are we assuming that a man rejecting a relationship with a woman means he rejects relationships all together.
it's funny how every damn time an autistic character shows up on screen everyone immediately agrees there's no way autistic people this character can care about romance or sex
"ace coding" is not a thing. "queercoding" is, "homoerotic subtext" is, these are actual devices that have showed up in literature and media over centuries to the point that they can be defined. "ace coding" as of yet is not a tradition in writing
are you guys familiar with the terms "confirmed bachelor" or "he never married" there's a Cultural Tradition through history to conceptualize gay people as "uninterested in romance" even outside of writing
there's even a more modern tradition where people (usually not even ace folks) very un-subtly try to wield asexuality to keep people from identifying as gay
why does fandom never remember gay ace people exist
why are you guys ignoring how much ford gushes about his companionship with fiddleford and bill "oh i cant imagine him being romantic" you dont have to. it's like... right there in front of you. i feel you're letting your preconceived notions abt autistic people get in the way of proper understanding of the work lol have you read J3 or TBOB???
when asked about gay HCs, while he validated any interpretations, alex ALSO went on an entire spiel about ford being a guy who deeply represses his own feelings because he doesnt want to confront them and just, i guess for NO REASON, he commented about how gay marriage wasnt even legal until a few months before GF ended. look up Interview with Alex Hirsch: Unlocking mysteries of Gravity Falls' Journal 3 tumblr hates external links.
but back to that but about gay marriage. are you aware that gay marriage hasn't even been legal in all US states for 10 years yet? are you aware that GF only ended 6 months after June 26 2015? are you aware that alex hirsch has received at least one email from Disney demanding that Blubs and Durland's relationship be kept comedic instead of romantic?? are you aware as of 2025 disney is STILL censoring LGBT narratives??
so like. why are you, gay people online, insistent that ford can be written freely as a gay man and since he wasn't, clearly he isn't gay
i know people take HCs very personally and i know a whole lotta people are gonna take this as a personal attack because "fandom is for fun >:(", but i'm here as somebody who's trying to do LITERARY ANALYSIS. especially as a queer AND autistic person, it's genuinely baffling to me to watch a whole slew of fellow gay people ignore actual historical context, authorial intent and the actual text to make arguments that make no logical sense. an entire slice of ford's story is deadwalled bc people are, idk, too uncomfortable admitting bill and ford feel/felt romantically abt each other?? and it drives me NUTS, i dont even mean it in a shipping way, i mean it in a way that makes yall sound like "ok so, i dont wanna say louis and lestat loved each other like that, can we say they were bffs"??? what is bro yapping about!!?!!!!
like truly there is something deeply hilarious about how ford pines's very very intentional word of god confirmed gay subtext gets more people claiming hes simply not a man who does romance instead of gay than the average fandom where a character is simply presumed straight by the author and the audience like HOWWWW
and again. why is it always the autistic character whos presumed as to not ever feeling romantic love or sexual feelings. like idk maybe there's more ways to feel and express things that isnt just how allistic people have taught us things are done. use your imaginations. isnt that what fandom is meant to be about.
tl;dr yeah yeah personal readings and headcanons, but personal readings can be and are affected by personal biases and fwiw i dont care if you hc him as being Somewhere in the aroace spectrum, what drives me nuts is denying that he's gay at all.

First off, you are allowed to have an opinion about poetry, but I'm going to point out what you appear to have missed. Secondly, I am nonbinary and this is my poem. I wrote it to represent how it sometimes feels being nonbinary in a hostile environment. I don't appreciate being told there's an issue with how things resonate with me or the others who have shared this post. In future, I would recommend you be kinder in your phrasing.
The werewolf has not harmed anyone. The werewolf's apparent only crime is living in the town. There is no evidence or past experience that any werewolves - or the men and wolves in the town - have ever actually hurt anyone. No mangling or killing, and no intention to do so. He just lives there, and apparently has for some time without issue. The townsperson who has approached the speaker refuses to admit this in as many words, but that is literally the text. If there was evidence of harm, it would have been provided when the speaker asked, "has he actually done anything wrong?"
I am a trans person living in the UK. The media and transphobes treat trans people of all kinds like they are predators ready to mutilate and defile children as though there is any evidence of it, when in fact there is absolutely none. And a significant portion of the public, who perhaps don't consider themselves to be transphobic - or at least, would never admit it - believe what they are being told. That is the analogy.
The werewolf isn't the issue here.
this poem is about being nonbinary.
#theres also a whole lot of discussion out there about the queer community finding solace in monster literature#i dont have any links rn but im sure it isnt hard to find#im sorry if this came over as antagonistic this comment did upset me but im trying to get across my point as kindly and efficiently as i ca#really did not expect this piece to do numbers and will do my best to ignore future comments but needed to have it clarified at least once#awoo

genuine question, as another black person who cant go out and protest what should i do? im not gonna lie, i listened to some of malcom x's speeches and mlks final speech and broke down. it feels like my family will never be safe here, but as someone whos unemployed and cant even drive (and even if i could drive, i dont have the money to leave) it feels like im doomed. it just feels like the majority of america and even the world assumes that just because the civil rights movement is 'over' racism isnt that bad anymore. someone tried to argue with me that racism isnt that bad in the usa compared to european countries because its 'not as in your face anymore'. what about police brutality? what about right now??? sorry for venting i just. this shit is breaking me man, and i legit dont know what to do
I'm feeling it too, and it pains me to see Black people struggle like this when we just want to be left alone
Here are some things to consider:
1) Your mere existence is a protest of itself. White people legit thought we'd all naturally die out at this point. It sucks that just living as a Black person is considered to be politically divisive; but that's why just being present is itself a protest
2) Not everyone needs to be a foot soldier or protester to join the fight. If there was a war and there was a side that was made up of nothing but fighters, they would lose. You need your scribes, you need your medics, you need your journalists, you need that kid that goes around the neighborhood, and plasters stickers of uplifting slogans
3) Do not feel obligated to engage with racists and bigots. I don't care what any nonblack leftist on here tells you, most of them cant stop using aave w/o having a breakdown. Your saftey comes first. This does not mean to bubble yourself, always stay woke about what goes on around you. But Black people are always expected to be in the front lines always physically fighting. Let others do their part
4) Search for community aid, community gardens, local/rec libraries, etc. Set up Black focused community events. Whether they are physical communities or online communities. Look into Black groups that focus on cooking while on a budget
5) Read various Black literature and essays. You have a physical copy? Try scanning them and having them on file. Spread it before people try erasing all traces of the material
6) Look into information by Black and Indigenous people about their thoughts on walkable cities and gentrification, mainly because these are topics that directly affect you from what I'm reading. But also look for bus/public transit modes of transportation
7) Share mutual aid, and don't be afraid to share your own when you need help.
8) Remember that every month is Black History Month, so we always have the opportunity to share and celebrate Blackness
I can't guarantee these are absolute solutions, but they are a starting point that I hope helps you in the long run ❤️
