This would be such a sad explanation for why Ed doesn't believe it when Barbara insists that Oswald is in love with him: he thought he might be, but then dismissed the possibility because Oswald had his chance to say something and didn't take it. Ed thinks: "If what Oswald had to say was that he was in love with me, he wouldn't have forgotten. If Oswald were in love with me, he would have kissed me on that couch."

I think the other important aspect of this is that Ed sees Oswald as brave and fearless, ready to seize the world by the throat and take whatever he wants from it, so he simply can't imagine that Oswald might be too shy to initiate a kiss or tell him he loves him.
