Lore Olympus is about a girl who gets ab*sed by her unknowingly half-brother and flees to the Underworld to escape and proceeds fall in love with her (not) uncle [as someone has generously reminded me that Zeus and Hades are not even brothers in this fic. Why the hell are some LO fans taking LO like actual Greek mythology if the author literally changed the “gods” relationships?]. Did I sum that up about right?

I’ll tell you what could’ve made LO 100% more appreciated: if the r*** plot was never there in the first place. If a god wasn’t yet again vilified for the sake of the plot.

You want to retell an age old myth, yet twist it so the guy who actually did wrong (Hades literally kidnapped Persephone without her consent. Don’t give me: “Oh but he had Zeus’ permission!” or “That’s just one interpretation!” Well we’re talking about this interpretation, kay? Cool. And also, you’re justifying somebody being kidnapped because their father gave permission for them to be kidnapped? Where does consent of the person being kidnapped come in? Make it make sense, please.) becomes her savior from the big bad popular guy! Ugh!

The disappointing thing is some of the characters designs are beautiful. I just wish the plot didn’t disgust me to the point I start ranting about how terrible it is every time it’s mentioned.

Overall, if you want to paint the original aggressor as a ✨sad boi who deserves the world✨, maybe don’t make someone else do the victimizing?

- There is historical context behind Hades abducting his to be bride. But is it not common to apply modern morals to these stories? How many times have you judged the other gods for their acts of wrath or violence?

In today’s world view, I highly doubt anyone would take it lightly if their daughter or son was kidnapped and forced to marry. But it’s okay, because we can just rewrite their “love” story, right?

You gotta read and watch some old books and films that aren’t 100% modern politically correct. I’m not saying you should agree with everything in them but you need to learn where genres came from to understand what those genres are doing today and where media deconstructing old tropes is coming from.

Also, more often than you might think, they’re not actually promoting bigotry so much as “didn’t consider all the implications of something” or just used words that were polite then but considered offensive now.
