apothecary diaries grabbed me a lot more successfully - it feels fresher and more original. I love the rich detail in every scene and the historical costumes, and maomao's stoic pragmatism is a good trait for a character who was kidnapped within 5 minutes of the show starting. her relationship with the courtesans interested me, and the fact that she poisoned herself? I think? that was crazy. what a cool character. and I like her green hair and freckles :)

Sorry still thinking abt this but the Western is a specific movie genre built off of the legacy of westward expansion and genocide of indigenous peoples. The “cowboy” as a heroic figure is a product of the hollywood film system and the marketing departments of gun companies more than it is any kind of reflection of a real social role.

This isn’t to say that theres nothing appealing about the mythos, especially to an audience of urban and suburban americans that gawk at the idea of a rugged frontiersman, a specific type of individualist power fantasy. The idea feeds off of the relative powerlessness of its audience, sells them a fantasy of being able to leave their complex city lives, with all its constraints and social conformity, and head into the “wilderness” with nothing more than their vehicle and their weapon.

Its no wonder such an idea appeals to gay and trans men, who feel like the “wilderness” allows them to live and be the type of man they want to be, to reclaim their individual agency through the power of violence the gun grants them. But especially in the modern day, its important to be aware of the inherent artifice of this idea. The “wilderness” is not a real place, there is no untamed nature that is free for the taking and expansion of the cattle rancher, throughout history the idea that there was such a place was used as justification for manifest destiny and endless genocide and displacement of the indigenous peoples that were maintaining that land.

As artists who wish to employ the genre conventions and aesthetics of the western, its important to keep in mind that the most popular and original expressions of this genre are also the most historically revisionist and the ones that most justify the genocide that took place. Thankfully, pretty much every wave of westerns that’s taken place since has been a reaction to those previous waves, each author trying to use these ideas and aesthetics to comment on what really happened, who was the most liberated, and who benefits the most from these ideas. But the work is never finished, and works that only seek to replicate the aesthetics of the genre without an awareness of the real history will inevitably replicate that first wave, and serve as their own justification for genocide, just with a new coat of paint.
