Günümüze ulaşan ve ilk kez 1896’da Paris’te gösterilen 'İnsanlığı Utandırmak İçin Kuyusundan Çıkan Gerçek' adlı resimde efsanelerle karışmış şekilde gerçekliğin düştüğü durumu betimliyordu."

Bunun üzerine gerçek kuyuya döner ve utançla sonsuza dek ortadan kaybolur. Rivayet o ki o günden beri yalan, gerçeğin elbiselerini giymiş biçimde aramızda dolanır durur. İnsanlık da o günden beri çıplak gerçeği görmek yerine onun giysilerini giyen yalanla karşılaşmaya alışır."
