The Boston Strangler:
Who is The Boston Strangler? Were the killings actually committed by Albert DeSalvo, who confessed to the assassination of 13 women in the Boston area between 1962 and 1964, or were they the work of several assailants, as many investigators maintain to this day? “It wasn’t as dark and scary as it sounds. I had a lot of fun… killing somebody’s a funny experience.”- Albert Desalvo. For an example of the complexities surrounding this incident, just look at the killer's alias. The guilty party was also known as the Phantom Fiend or Phantom Strangler before the Boston Strangler tag was popularized in 1963. One of its papers were opened by a 1962 version of the Boston Herald stating, "A wild strangler is loose in Boston." What is the motive behind the killings of these women? Forensic psychiatrists were enlisted after Helen Blake's murder to help profile the murderer committing these atrocities against women. The prevailing views were that he was a young man (18-40), experiencing hallucinations of injustice and his mother's contempt (this was before the emergence of younger victims). However, the theory of the killer being a mother-hater collapsed when Sophie Clark was assassinated on 5 December of the initial year of the assassinations. Dr. James Brussel, the' father' of American Psychological Profiling, has provided a new' psychofit.' The Killer was now considered to be 30 years old, heavily constructed, medium height, clean shaven with thick dark hair; possibly Spanish or Italian background. When the police asked him why he targeted a variety of young to mature women, he was eager to answer ... "Attractiveness had nothing to do with it...When this certain time comes on me, it's a very immediate thing. When I get this feeling, instead of going to work I make an excuse to my boss. I start driving and I start building this image up, and that's why I find myself not knowing where I'm going."-Albert Desalvo. What we do know is that at least 13 women were killed in their own homes between June 14, 1962 and January 4, 1964, most of them strangled and sexually assaulted. Two more murders are believed to be the product of the same murderer or killers at the time of the shootings but were later found to be different. In reality, investigators were so eager to close the case that by manipulating related items, Massachusetts Attorney General Edward Brooke reportedly called in a self-professed psychometrist— one who appears to intuit information about an individual or an event— to help solve the killings. Peter Hurkos was named the psychometrist. He proclaimed the killings to be the work of one person for whom he received a "minute detailed description," although that definition actually did not match Albert DeSalvo or any other prominent perpetrator in the killings. The split in the Boston Strangler investigation came about as with several other serial murder investigations in history as a result of an apparently unrelated incident. A man claiming to be a policeman stormed a young woman's home on October 27, tied her up, sexually assaulted her, and then left abruptly after shouting, "I'm sorry." Police led to Albert DeSalvo by the victim's identification of her rapist. Upon his conviction and his photograph was released, several other female victims came forward to describe him as their attacker. Only after his capture did DeSalvo admit being the Boston Strangler, first to a fellow prisoner.
Description in the admissions of DeSalvo mirrored many elements of the crime scenes that were never made public. Nevertheless, there were also contradictions in his arguments. Eventually, the testimony was found too vague to be used in court; DeSalvo was prosecuted primarily for the previous assaults and sexual offenses he had been interested in. DeSalvo was moved to Walpole State Prison following his capture, where he stayed until November 1973. It was then that he sent Dr. Ames Robey, a forensic psychiatrist, an urgent phone call. DeSalvo told the doctor he needed to meet him urgently and asked him to bring a journalist with him. But in the middle of the night, DeSalvo was stabbed to death in his cell before they could speak. Dr. Robey claimed DeSalvo was murdered as he was about to reveal the truth about the crimes of the Boston Strangler. In 2013 DeSalvo's DNA was confirmed as a "almost definite match" to the DNA that was found at the scene of Mary Sullivan's killing. Two times, officials exhumated his body to do further DNA testing. For some, this DNA evidence finally put the Boston Strangler's identity to rest. In the long string of oddities and contradictions, it is simply another knot for others. With DeSalvo gone and the other major players now buried, we can always be unable to understand the last fact behind the most popular America serial killers. There were thirteen women murdered by The Boston Strangler and they are: Anna Slesers (55) Died 14th June 1962and was discovered by her own son; Found to be strangled with her belt, Mary Mullen (85) Died 28th June 1962 and the killer left a New Year's greeting card wedged between the toes of her left foot, Nina Nichols (68) Died 30th June 1962, Helen Blake (65) Died 30th June 1962 ;Forensic psychiatrists called in by Police to help profile killer, Ida Irga (75) Died 19th August 1962, Jane Sullivan (67) Died 20th August 1962, Sophie Clark (20) Died 5th December 1962; Suspicions of a 'Mother-Killer' on the rampage are quashed by the latest killing, Patricia Bissette (23) Died 31st December 1962, Mary Brown (69) Died 9th March 1963, Beverley Samans (23) Died 6th May 1963, Evelyn Corbin (58) Died 8th September 1963, Joann Graff (23) Died 23rd November 1963, and Mary Sullivan (19) Died 4th January 1964; De Salvo posed as a detective, gaining easy entry. In actions completely uncharacteristic of his previous methods, he allowed his would-be victim to live.
