Okay but seriously... what’s your take on the fucking kid?? Like if zigi isn’t real what’s all that about?
Honestly? The pregnancy was sus to begin with. Even before the announcement broke out, I felt it in my bones that there was going to be a pregnancy scandal coming out.
Why? Because the way I saw it, it was going to be the perfect story. “Z and I were together for the entire quarantine thus letting us to try and start up our family” but the fact that she supposedly got pregnant before the start of quarantine leaves a lot of questions that don’t make sense.
But the fact that I managed to call it ahead of time even left me laughing because of how transparent they were. All in all though, my intuition has always been right.
But alas, I’m open minded. So I’ll explain you logic on how her being pregnant is plausible yet odd, and how it could be fake because I can see it both ways.
She was actually pregnant route.
The pregnancy was odd to begin with. And the way she handled it was also odd in itself. You’re telling me a girl with quote on quote “hoshimoto” disease managed to get knocked up early on in her modeling career when people with that disease need to pre plan their pregnancy ahead of time because of how hard it is to carry? And the fact that it could be potentially life threatening for her? And she was out there horseback riding when again, her disease makes it all high risk? I don’t know about you, but whether or not I’m an experienced rider, I wouldn’t want to jepordize my kid or my life.
Not to mention that she was seeing that Tyler dude at the time when the whole conception was done. (There’s also rumors of her seeing her friend because of some pap pictures of them potentially kissing) If Z and her had a one night fling and managed to get knocked up, vs during all the years where they actually WERE supposedly dating is shit luck in itself if she wasn’t planning on getting pregnant any time soon. OR a miracle that she didn’t have to go through the burden of trying to conceive like again, many others who sadly suffer the disease go through.
All this says to me is that she was either lucky/or she was fucked. Either way, it opens up an old can of worms with the hoshimoto disease she supposedly suffers being complete bullshit all along from the start since she claimed to having it when that whole Coke scandal took place. Plus again. When you have that disease you BLOAT up. You don’t LOSE weight like she did. So with that being said if we’re going for the “she was actually pregnant route” she was totally lying about the disease the entire time and that’s why she managed to get pregnant without even trying. Just sucks for her that it happened during a time where they were broken up and she was just seeing someone else. Kinda ruins her good girl image.
PLUS the date of the conception was done at a time where both her and Z were no where near the same place together. How do we know this? Because the whole month of the alleged conceiving that came from her has dated pap pictures that were released of them being at different places around the world.
So with all this basic logic, and giving her the benefit of the doubt of her really being pregnant is that:
Zayn is NOT the dad.
Now let’s go for the fake pregnancy route.
Her stomach changing sizes from small to large then back to small constantly over the months leading up to the birth. Missing birth marks and DISAPPEARING through thin air birth marks from a video she HERSELF posted.
Then weird dents and outlines of her stomach under clothes where it would meet to her breast area while not wearing a bra being indication of a potential fake prosthetic. And those things can be scarily real. Like the one Penelope Cruz wore for a movie.
Her horse back riding and consuming drinks and foods you shouldn’t be consuming while being pregnant. Especially in such a high risk pregnancy.
Them announcing the pregnancy when I believe she was 5 months along which is a disasterous point because there was still a potential miscarriage in that period especially when her “hoshimoto” disease amplifying it. (We all know about the Mariah Carey situation that occurred on Ellen.)
The fact that she conveniently got pregnant right when the pandemic started and quarantine took place where there would be no paps AND no modeling gigs but just in time to restart her gigs and runway walks for after she gave birth.
The fact that the news broke out a DAY before her interview with Jimmy Fallon. How convenient.
The fact that she said she wasn’t going to publicize her pregnancy but right away she does a live stream to promote her vogue book and she knew everyone was going to be watching to see her stomach and she had it all out in the open gaining more views.
Zayn never talked about the pregnancy ONCE. She was getting massive trolls yet all he would do was make sure to go on Twitter and tweet about video games and boxing.
After giving birth its funny how they waited till the day Zayn was trending world wide about his new song drop to announce that she had the kid a few days ago just so the attention could go to her.
Right after giving birth instead of staying home and being safe she decided to go to the grocery store in a PANDEMIC. The fact that we know this because of the security cameras that showed them. Which is by the way illegal to share. And the fact that they knew who they were is also amusing to me since I highly doubt that the person managing the security cameras knew it was two celebrities walking in to the store without a tip. (plus Z’s tatts were purposely displayed just to make SURE it was him)
She yet again during a pandemic goes out SHOPPING with her kid at a store.
She yet again goes out in the middle of NEW YORK IN PUBLIC OUTSIDE IN THE COLD AND WHERE THE CITY IS AT A RED HIGH ALERT OF CASES with her kid.
Oh and the fact that Zayn was trending world wide again about his story on IG and Yolanda decided that out of all days to post a supposed throwback of when they found out about them having a girl. Which doesn’t fit because supposedly her birthday was a double thing to work the gender reveal as well.
So either in this case the pregnancy was fake because of the reasons I listed above.
Or if you still want to believe it wasn’t fake and it is Z’s then her disease was a bullshit lie, and she’s an awful mom putting her child at risk since the start and is using her for promo reasons.
Oh and add on. If you still think this is all a reach, celebrities have confirmed to faking pregnancies. It’s not a rare occurrence. People have come out about it, and there’s always been accusations being done like on Tom Cruise.
But anyways,
Pick your choosing. I could care less.

Somebody said on the other blog something about when or if she had a baby, she what, bought one? That would not surprise me. I think Jon backed her in a corner by announcing it. Brandi backed her in a corner by saying she was only a month behind Renee. Her trainer even maybe by having her do stuff that isn't safe for a pregnant woman to do. Sarah Logan has still worked out during pregnancy. IF their is a baby, it's a media accessory for her to show off his love child. Karma need to slap her hard
I don't think Renee wants a baby. She only wants the attention that this "pregnancy" and a "miscarriage / stillbirth" will give her. Having a baby would mean she would have to take care of it. Having a baby means a lot of restrictions - spontaneously to Hawaii? NOPE! Drinking, coke, botox? NOPE! Chasing "Husb"? NOPE! Renee can't even take responsibility for herself, a baby would kill her.
But yes, Karma shouldn't just slap this troll in the face, but really beat her up ... because her lies take on such disgusting and immoral proportions that she and her little brain need a re-start.

— && guests may mistake me as ( halsey ), but really i am ( amalia 'mal' lawson + cis female + she/her ) and my DOB is ( 8/6/1995 ). i am applying for the ( maintenance manager ) position as part of the EHP and would like to live in suite ( 202 ). i should be hired because i am ( + passionate, charismatic, thorough ), but i can also be ( - prideful, dramatic, argumentative ) at times. personally, i like to ( creating street art, volunteer community work, organizing protests ) when off the clock, but that won’t interfere with work. thank you for your consideration!
aaaand here we come with our favorite revamped heathen! mal hasn’t had quite as much changed - just a nice lil face lift and we love that for her.
before we get super into it: we have a stats page and a pinterest for your viewing pleasure.
going a little heavy on the triggers just because i want to be sure to cover all my bases!! most everything is just a mention, but we gotta be safe kids! take care of yourselves and remember ilysm.
( pregnancy tw, miscarriage tw, police brutality mentions tw, substance abuse tw )
- amalia raelle lawson was born august 6th, 1995 to marshal and cherisse lawson in oakland, california.
- marshal owned a local bbq restaurant and cherisse was an er nurse. both grew up in rough neighborhoods with rough childhoods, but vowed to make their kids’ lives better than their own.
- three years after mal came into their lives, they had a son; jayden.
- from that day on, mal had a best friend and confidant that she’d go to the ends of the earth to keep by her side.
- their childhoods weren’t easy in the way most kids are - their mom worked long hours and their dad spent most of his days at the restaurant. when their parents were home though (if cherisse wasn’t sleeping off a shift change), they spent their time with their community - be it at the restaurant or at block parties - trying to better it in any way they could manage.
- police brutality mention tw despite their efforts, their community was still plagued by all the injustices every other predominantly black community faces. from a young age, mal learned that the justice system wasn’t built to serve her or the people she considered family.
- police brutality mention tw she was six the first time she heard about a family friend being a victim of excessive force; nine when she saw it. for years after that, she saw mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and cousins coming to mourn their loved ones - either locked up or taken from them too soon.
- instead of becoming numb to these tragedies, a fire was lit in amalia to change the system - even if she had to dismantle it one piece at a time.
- in the mean time, mal found an outlet for her emotions in art - specifically painting. she started with watercolors and crayolas, but once her parents realized her abilities were beyond what they should have been for a kind her age, they put whatever extra they could manage into mal and her passion for art.
- she was fourteen when she was introduced to street art - graffiti, if you want to get technical. his name was trey and amalia was instantly enamored by him. trey ran with a rougher crowd than mal was used to, but he softened around her.
- pregnancy tw they were young, in love, and reckless. she was fifteen when mal found out she was pregnant. while she wasn’t thrilled about becoming another statistic, she was thrilled about the idea of having a child.
- not entirely pleased with the situation, but always willing to support their children, mal’s parents welcomed trey into the family with open arms and began planning what was sure to be a life full of love for the newest addition to the lawson family.
- miscarriage tw three months into the pregnancy, amalia started to experience cramping and spotting. worried it may be something serious, she had her mom take her to the hospital. it was there they confirmed that mal was experiencing a miscarriage.
- everything changed after that. amalia was no longer the girl who wanted to fight the world’s injustices - she was just a girl who wanted to fight the world. she was angry and bitter at everyone and everything.
- substance abuse tw her relationship with trey quickly began to deteriorate and she turned, for the first time, to the rougher crew he hung out with. booze and drugs quickly became a way for mal to cope with the pain she carried around. she started small - cigarettes and pot - before graduating to the harder stuff, like coke and prescription pills.
- substance abuse tw skipping school to get loaded became a regular occurrence and when the truancy officers showed up at the lawson’s front door, her parents sat mal down for an at home intervention. for as much as they yelled and cried and offered treatment, amalia wasn’t hearing any of it. it wasn’t until jayden snuck into her room late one night to ask if he was going to lose mal like one of his friends had lost his older brother that mal realized her actions weren’t only effecting her life.
- miscarriage tw just before her junior year - with the help of her parents - mal decided it was best for her to leave public school and finish the rest of her schooling online. the same time she started online schooling, amalia started painting again. something she hadn’t done since she found out she’d miscarried.
- being able to stay home meant mal had the space and time to heal in her own ways. when she wasn’t doing school work, amalia was painting to help clear her head. it took some time, but she was finally able to tell her parents what she was going through, both mentally and physically.
- miscarriage tw after she miscarried, mal started to suffer from chronic period and pelvic pain, as well as painful intercourse. she’d also been suffering from symptoms of depression, all of which help lead her down the destructive path she’d gone down.
- several doctor trips later, mal was diagnosed with endometriosis and depression and quickly began treatments for both. despite starting treatments for her endometriosis, doctors told mal the likelihood of her conceiving again was highly unlikely.
- mal hadn’t expected to hear at 16 that biological children may never be in her future and she was devastated, but she had her support system and their love and willingness to do whatever they could for her helped her cope in a much healthier way.
- by seventeen, amalia was feeling like her life was back on track, though drastically different than she’d imagined. she finished her diploma early and began working for her dad in the restaurant; serving, cooking, even helping fix things when they broke down. slowly but surely, mal mended her relationship with her parents and earned back their trust.
- one day, after some kids had vandalized the restaurant, marshal asked mal if she’d help cover the graffiti. jumping at the chance, amalia spent three days finishing her first big piece - which is still her favorite to this day - a portrait of her family and the community that kept the restaurant going. abstract and colorful, full of life and vibrancy, mal’s piece drew a lot of attention and several offers for her to commission other pieces.
- for the next three years, mal worked at the restaurant and took commissions when she could. life seemed normal again. she even reconnected with trey, mending the relationship that had been broken.
- the day trey proposed was the happiest day of mal’s life. she’d been beyond thrilled! after everything they’d been through, he still wanted to be with her. unfortunately, the bliss didn’t last. their engagement abruptly ended and mal decided it was best if she get away for a while, so as to not slip back into destructive patterns.
- a quick google search brought amalia to the malnati website and their employee housing program. applying was a no brainer and a month later she and jayden were packing their bags and moving to chicago.
- she started as a maid and, in the four years she’s been there, has moved up to the maintenance manager position.
hcs!
- when she’s not working, mal’s usually painting in her suite or sketching at one of the many parks in chicago during the day. at night, you’ll find her taking full advantage of chicago’s nightlife. night’s in for mal lawson are few and far between.
- drugs tw she skates a fine line when it comes to sobriety. she’s careful to drink or use just enough to be sure she’ll have a good time, but it’s a slippery slope. in the four years she’s been in chicago, mal’s slowly started doing more and more, telling herself she’s got a handle on it. truth be told, she’s teetering on the edge of a full blown problem again.
- super into video games, but partial to anything involving zombies. mal loves a zombie - don’t ask me why. she’s usually down to play among us, valorant, fortnight, and is always down for a little animal crossing when she needs something more chill.
- 90′s hip hop & r&b are mal’s shiiiiiit. she’s at her happiest when she’s got a little tupac on in the background.
- also don’t you dare try to tell her he’s not alive in cuba somewhere living his best life. she ain’t havin’ it.
- when she’s angsty/sad/angry her go to playlist is a lot of punk, rock, grunge. especially of the 90′s persuasion. she stays on brand. her favorites are the offspring, nirvana, the foo fighters, soundgarden, stone temple pilots, the smashing pumpkins, sonic youth, and pixies.
- she’s gluten intolerant and vegetarian.
- mal is a cult classic movie kind of gal. donnie darko, pulp fiction, rocky horror are all on her list of favorites. she’s never going to turn down a good horror/thriller marathon, either.
- she plays a little piano and a little guitar. she picked them up after she started online schooling. she finds both relaxing. she’s by no means going to make a career out of it, but it’s fun!
- hella resting bitch face, but she really is super friendly! she just doesn’t always look it.
- don’t test her, though. she’s got attitude for days and she isn’t afraid to let you know what she thinks or how she feels about you. we ain’t got no time for games, okay?! okay.
- amalia has also very much immersed herself in community work since moving to chicago, especially on the south side. if her parents taught her anything growing up, it’s that she should give back the her community as much as she’s able.
- a lot of her street art celebrates women of color and their beauty.
- not a fan of cops, still. soz pals.
- when it comes to work, she does her best to make the malnati a decent place to work. she’s all about positive reinforcement and making sure she takes care of her employees. she’s not gonna shy away from telling you ya fucked up, though. she’ll say it with love, though, while also calling you a giant pain in her ass. but with love. okay?! okay.
wanted connections!
- hook ups! : mal is a RAGING bisexual and is not at all afraid to make her appreciation for someone’s physical appearance known. just don’t expect to stay the night. once the deed is done you’ve got about thirty seconds to vacate mal’s suite.
- softies! : make. her. soft. give me someone who makes her break her no sleep over rule, pls and thank. she’s a stubborn, pain in the ass, and sassy af but someone who can make her melt? and act like a teenager in love again? all gooey and gross? yuh. pls.
- good influence! : someone she doesn’t have to drink and party with to have a good time! remind her that she misses things when she’s not sober - that the world is still beautiful and inspiring even when she’s not in a drug induced haze.
- chill baes! : drugs tw people mal just ~ v I b E s ~ with! probs smokin’ a decent amount of weed together.
- protest pals! : people who are also involved in the community and social justice movements. they happily bail each other out of jail (or, more likely, sit in the back of a squad car together) and attend protests together. bc the buddy system. overthrow the government safely ty.
- rivals! : mal’s got a big mouth and some seriously controversial opinions. she’s not afraid to call people out for being ‘wrong’ and calling them...creative names. she’s bound to have a giant list of people who aren’t her biggest fans.
- bad girl’s club : need i say more? give. me. the girl gang. constantly partying and constantly getting into some kind of mischief and leaving a trail of broken hearts as they go.
if you made it this far, you deserve SEVERAL high fives and literally all my love. ily all v much and uh, yuh. let’s plot pals. :)

Brockmire “Road Trip”
(Photo: IFC)
S1 E6, May 3, 2017
WRITTEN BY: Amanda Sitko
SYNOPSIS
Minor League baseball team owner Jules James and her not-so-serious boyfriend/ballpark announcer Jim Brockmire are hanging out at the small town bar she owns. She can’t believe that after so many years of taking great care to not get pregnant, she is now knocked up. Fetus father Brockmire is ready to fork over cash for an abortion, but Jules isn’t sure that’s what she wants He fully acknowledges the choice is hers, but asks for some odds. She says she’s 60/40 in favor of having the baby, which surprises him. She asks him to seriously consider whether or not he could be a dad.
While playing a game of catch with his teenage assistant Charles, Brockmire asks the young man, “You think I’d be a good father?” Charles quickly responds, “You would be a terrible father, don’t do that.” Meanwhile at the bar, Jules quietly asks the (unnamed) bartender if she’s ever had an abortion. The young lady responds that she has, and relates a rather frank and disturbing story about having to travel long-distance to Pittsburgh for the procedure, where she encountered violent protesters; however, she asserts that she regrets nothing. Jules reveals she is pregnant, but when she starts getting into personal details, the bartender encourages her to call a friend instead.
Jules later visits her friend Diana, a mother of three. Diana is excited for Jules’s pregnancy, telling her this is her “sign” that she’s ready to let go of the past and settle down. When Diana’s youngest wakes up crying, mom encourages an uncomfortable Jules to hold the baby.
We then see Brockmire seeking more advice from baseball player/father-of-thirteen Pedro Uribe, who speaks glowingly of fatherhood. When Brockmire sees Jules later, he’s excited about the prospect of raising a kid. But when Jules tells him she definitely wants an abortion, he heaves a sigh of relief and thanks God. The two make plans to visit a clinic in Pittsburgh.
Jules and Brockmire meet with an abortion provider, who is put off by their relentless snarky joking. When the doctor explains that Jules qualifies for a medical abortion, she bristles at the thought of swallowing a pill and asks if she can snort it instead. The doctor tells her to please refrain from making cocaine references in his presence. He asks her to ingest the mifepristone right away and the misoprostol later. When she takes the first pill, much slapstick-y gagging ensues, but she does eventually swallow it.
Later at the hotel, Jules and Brockmire are ready to “pre-game” her abortion. While she mixes drinks in the bathroom, he snorts a couple lines of what he assumes to be coke but, alas, he has unwittingly snorted her misoprostol. They meet with the frustrated doctor again. He imagines Brockmire might experience some of the same symptoms Jules will experience when she aborts, but can’t say for sure since this hasn’t happened before. He gives Jules another pill, and again she gags multiple times before actually swallowing it.
The next morning, Brockmire and Jules lie in bed, both wrecked from a rough night of medical abortion symptoms but otherwise relieved. She thanks him for being so thoroughly supportive throughout her brief pregnancy. She says she wants something positive to come out of this situation. Later we see that they’ve invited all thirteen of Uribe’s children to town so they can see their father during baseball season.
KEEPING IT REAL QUOTIENT
I don’t care much for this show, but there’s a lot to love about this abortion episode. For starters, I really dig Jules and Brockmire’s dynamic throughout the story. This is how I imagine pro-choice grown-ups dealing with an unplanned yet not entirely unwelcome pregnancy. Though not necessarily a maternal figure, it makes sense that Jules — an entrepreneur who’s aggressively promoting this sleepy small town’s baseball team — could see herself tackling motherhood with that same gusto. But in the end, even after holding her friend’s “cute little fat angel baby,” she just didn’t feel it. Brockmire does everything he can to support her, and in just the right way. When she tells him she’s leaning toward keeping the baby, he replies in his typical, colorful fashion, “I understand. I gave up my vote at ejaculation.” He doesn’t blab about her situation to anyone, even when he’s seeking advice from friends. Other than accidentally snorting her abortion pill (which mainly upsets her because he’d greedily snorted both lines), he puts her desire and comfort first. His going through the abortion symptoms with her perfectly symbolizes his surprising capacity for empathy.
The way they deal with this problem together makes for a funny and surprisingly sweet episode, but it’s also refreshing to see this depiction of a fetus father type who isn’t quite so rare in real life as TV would have us believe. I’ve watched a lot of abortion episodes and there is this tendency to create drama by placing the fetus father at odds with the pregnant woman and whatever choice she is making. Way less often do we see the guy say to her, “I’ll support whatever you want,” which is exactly what my boyfriend said to me when I was getting ready to terminate an unplanned pregnancy. Of course this is not everyone’s real life experience, but it seems underrepresented on TV.
But my favorite thing about this abortion tale is that magnificent scene with Jules and the bartender. The young woman begins her tale by explaining how difficult it was for her to get an abortion. Unable to visit her local Planned Parenthood, which had recently been firebombed, she had to pay for a round-trip bus ticket to Pittsburgh, plus the cost of the surgery, plus the cost of three nights at a hotel. These are the sort of real life barriers that prevent people who live in small towns from accessing abortion, and that is something TV shows almost never discuss when they talk about termination. I’m extremely pleased that so many shows in the past few years have embraced the once-taboo topic of abortion and that we’ve see many pregnant protagonists — from Scandal’s Olivia Pope to Bojack Horseman’s Diane — choose termination without the tiniest bit of shame. But most TV shows feature middle and upper class characters who live in or around major cities where abortion is still pretty accessible. I live in a mid-sized southern city where you cannot get a legal abortion. If I needed to terminate, I’d have to travel two hours to a larger city, where I’d have to wait 48 hours for the pill or procedure itself. For people who work low wage jobs and/or don’t have a car, abortion becomes an expensive, time-consuming, potentially job-threatening endeavor. How pleasing to see a young, working class woman character on a TV show lay this all out for viewers who may not understand how hard it is to get an abortion here in flyover country.*
I also love the bartender’s story because it includes the funniest dark joke of the whole episode. Describing what happened when she got to the abortion clinic, she says, “The protesters screamed the worst things humanly possible in my face. But it was fine because I was listening to ‘Shake It Off’.” She smiles, then adds, “And then somebody threw a diaper full of rocks at me… That I couldn’t shake off.” As horrifying as this is, the casual, almost gossipy way she relates the story makes it so funny.
Indeed, her nonchalance about sharing her experience (“I tell everyone that story! It’s the first thing on my dating profile”) honestly reminded me of some of my millennial friends. I’ve always run with a pretty liberal and open-minded crowd, but I don’t remember me or my girlfriends talking so casually about abortion when I was in my early twenties. Even in the very church-going, abortion-unfriendly town where I currently reside, I’m regularly delighted to witness the open and unapologetic way some of my younger friends talk about termination. This bartender reminded me a bit of one young activist I know, who posted on Facebook the day after Tennessee’s anti-choice Amendment One passed, “Someone needs to knock me up so I can have a spite abortion.” I still laugh out loud every time I think about that.
Alas, this scene is not perfect. A couple small details bugged me. At one point Dale, one of the redneck yokel bar flies, brags about being the person who firebombed the Planned Parenthood (which the bartender shrugs off with an eye roll). Look, I know some enemies of abortion access could best be described as “redneck” but this is a cheap shot. The writers of this show seem to have so much contempt for small-town people, but I suspect most of them probably don’t know any. It makes for some pretty hollow satire, especially because firebombin-rednecks aren’t the main reason rural women can’t get abortions (Republican legislators and anti-choice organizations are).
And then there’s this other detail, about which I have mixed feelings. After telling Jules that the procedure itself was easy, the bartender says, “Sure, when I woke up I felt like shit and I had a black eye from the rock diaper. But would I do it again?” With a slightly embarrassed look, she says, “Yeah, I did.” Ah, now here’s a major taboo, both on TV** and IRL - the woman who seeks multiple abortions. I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it until we fully obliterate termination stigma, THERE IS NO CORRECT NUMBER OF ABORTIONS A PERSON CAN HAVE. If you call yourself pro-choice but catch yourself saying things like, “abortion shouldn’t be used as birth control,” or, “abortion should be safe, legal, and rare,” you are hurting the movement. As long as you believe that more-than-one-abortion is tacky or yucky, you are keeping stigma alive. Please stop.
So yes, I look forward to the day when “I had two abortions” isn’t a punchline. Nevertheless, I still appreciate seeing a character say that she did, especially one who is this funny and cool.
GRADE
A- Based on previous episodes, I had no expectation of loving this story as much as I did. The grievances listed above would usually result in a lower grade, but that just shows how great the rest of the episode is.
* While the bartender’s timeline implies that there was a waiting period for her procedure (consistent with Pennsylvania law), this is not something Jules encounters when she meets with the physician. I imagine this detail was omitted for the purpose of moving the story along, but it is an oversight.
** The only other character I’ve seen who talks about having had more than one abortion is Mimi-Rose from Girls.
- by Tara
UPDATE: A reader correctly noted that Samantha from Sex and the City also talked about having had two abortions. Good catch!

Sweeteners: Friend or Foe?
This article was published in the August/September edition of NHD Magazine. There are a lot of scare-mongering messages about this topic, so I found it interesting to take a close look at the evidence related to sweeteners and health.
There can be a lot of confusion about the role and safety of sweeteners.
This article will explore the evidence related to artificial sweeteners and bulk sweeteners.
The term ‘sweeteners will be used to encompass both types of sweetener during this article.
Sugars (also called ‘nutritive sweeteners’ or ‘caloric sweeteners’) such as sucrose and fructose contain carbohydrates and provide 3.75 calories per·gram1. Nutritive sweeteners are found in: table sugar, honey and syrups.
Artificial sweeteners are used to provide sweetness while containing little to no calories1.
These are used in a variety of products such as: diet soft drinks, jellies, yoghurts, desserts, chewing gum, sweets and table top sweeteners2. Artificial sweeteners can also be referred to as: sugar substitutes, non-nutritive sweeteners, intense sweeteners and high-potency sweeteners1.
Polyols like sorbitol, xylitol and mannitol are sugar alcohols (also called ‘bulk sweeteners) which are technically nutritive sweeteners, but they are lower in sugar and calories than other sugars (2.4 calories per gram)1.
The sweeteners listed in table one and two are licensed for use in the UK; each has a corresponding E-Number, which means that it has passed the safety tests for approved use in the EU and the UK3.
Table One1-4,6,8-11
Artificial Sweetener E Number Approx Sweetness (vs. Sucrose) ADI (per kg body weight/day) Acesulfame-K E950 200 times sweeter 9 mg Advantame E969 37,000 times sweeter 5 mg Aspartame E951 200 times sweeter 40 mg Cyclamate E952 30-40 times sweeter 7 mg Neohesperidine Dihydrochalcone E959 1,000 – 1,800 times sweeter 5 mg Neotame E961 7,000 – 13,000 sweeter 2 mg Saccharin E954 300 – 500 sweeter 5 mg Steviol Glycosides (or ‘stevia’) E960 200 – 300 times sweeter 4 mg Sucralose E955 600 – 650 times sweeter 15 mg Thaumatin E957 2,000 – 3,000 times sweeter 1.03 – 1.10 mg Aspartame-acesulfame salt E962 350 times sweeter 15 mg
Table Two3-5
Bulk Sweetener E Number Approx Sweetness (vs. Sucrose) Erythritol E968 20 – 40% less sweet lsomalt E953 50% less sweet Lactitol E966 50% less sweet Maltitol E965 Same level of sweetness Mannitol E421 30% less sweet Sorbitol E420 40% less sweet Xylitol E967 Same level of sweetness
Artificial sweeteners range from 30 times sweeter than table sugar (or ‘sucrose’), to 37,000 times sweeter.
Whereas bulk sweeteners often have the same level of sweetness as sucrose; but can also be up to 50% less sweet. Therefore bulk sweeteners are used as fillers to improve the consistency of products, as well as their role as sweeteners4.
As part of the safety evaluation process by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), artificial sweeteners are given an acceptable daily intake (ADI) value. This ADI, which applies to all food additives, is an estimate of the amount that is considered to be safe to consume everyday over a lifetime. It is measured as milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day5. For example, aspartame has an ADI of 40mg per kg body weight per day.
To reach the ADI for aspartame, a 70kg adult would have to consume over 5 litres of Diet Coke everyday over a lifetime1,6.
Rather than allocating an ADI, bulk sweeteners which are licensed for use in the EU are classified as ‘‘acceptable’’, which means that the expected exposure to these is considered to be safe4.
An excess intake of bulk sweeteners is not advised as this can cause gastrointestinal issues such as: cramping, bloating, flatulence and diarrhoea7.
There is an EFSA approved health claim that replacing sugar with intense sweeteners (i.e. artificial sweeteners) certain sugar alcohols (xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, lactitol, isomalt and erythritol), and other nutritive sweeteners (D-tagatose, isomaltulose and polydextrose) is good for dental health2. This is because these sweeteners don’t ferment and cause demineralisation of teeth.
These sweeteners can actually help to maintain tooth mineralisation.
Using artificial sweeteners in place of sugary options can be a useful strategy for managing blood glucose levels for some people with Diabetes.
This can also be useful for those with reactive hypoglycemia1,12
There is some evidence that saccharin and sucralose may increase insulin levels, but overall the research is conflicting so more well designed human studies are needed to investigate this13-16.
EFSA approved the health claim that replacing sugar with the same sweeteners outlined above (i.e. artificial sweeteners, xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, lactitol, isomalt, erythritol, D-tagatose, isomaltulose and polydextrose) reduces the increase in blood sugars which occurs after a meal2. However, EFSA could find no clear relationship between using artificial sweeteners to replace sugar, and maintaining normal blood sugar levels overall2.
For those who carb count it is not clear how bulk sweeteners should be counted, as the carbohydrate levels absorbed from these can vary17. Bulk sweeteners are also used in products which are labelled as ‘diabetic food’, however these products are not recommended as they can still be high in fat and calories and may cause gastrointestinal problems if consumed in large amounts17.
Although swapping sugars for sweeteners reduces calorie intake, there are concerns that sweeteners may interfere with our metabolism and increase our appetite1,18. Some studies have found that using artificial sweeteners as part of a weight loss program can help participants to improve weight loss1,19-22 and a review by EFSA in 2011 found no clear relationship between using sweeteners and weight management2. A recent systematic review by Azad et al. found evidence from cohort studies that consuming artificial sweeteners was associated with a slight increase in BMI, weight and waist circumference; but there was no association found from randomised-controlled trials23. There is a small amount of research that suggests that those who consume sweeteners may have a lower overall diet quality, this may also play a role in terms of weight management24. There is limited information about the effect of polyols on weight management25.
Furthermore, it has been found that sweeteners can alter gut bacteria which may be harmful. This has mainly been found in animal studies and the results of human studies have been mixed26- 28. Other studies have found that changes in our gut bacteria can be been linked to our weight and overall health29-30, so it is possible that sweeteners may promote weight gain via changes to our gut bacteria, but more human trials are needed to test this.
Overall, more research is needed to clarify the role that sweeteners play in weight management.
The BDA acknowledges this, but also highlights that sweeteners can be helpful in some cases as they “allow patients and (or) clients to alter their calorie intake without making significant dietary changes”1.
Some studies in the 80s and 90s found an association between between aspartame, saccharin and cancer development in rats.
However, more recent large studies which were carried out in humans provide strong evidence that artificial sweeteners do not increase cancer risk6,31.
As discussed above, both of these sweeteners have undergone rigorous evaluation by EFSA and are licensed as safe to use in the EU within their respective ADI levels1,6.
This rare genetic condition is a deficiency of the the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, which means that the amino acid phenylalanine cannot be metabolized and can build up to dangerous levels if not carefully excluded from the diet.
Aspartame contains phenylalanine
Therefoire, it is a legal requirement in the UK to clearly label that a food product ‘contains a source of phenylalanine’ if it contains aspartame1,32.
ADI levels are very conservative as they are calculated at one hundredth of the amount that is safe to consume.
Sweeteners are considered safe to use during pregnancy, as long as consumption remains below the ADI.
However low calorie options shouldn’t replace nourishing options during pregnancy; for example diet pop shouldn’t replace milky drinks1.
In the EU artificial sweeteners are not allowed to be used in any food which is designed for infants or young children (up to three years old), including baby food1,33. An important reason for this is because infants and children have high energy needs to support growth and development1,33. There is also a lack of safety data in relation to the use of artificial sweeteners in this age group1,33-35.
A recent study found that breastfeeding mothers who drank diet drinks which contained sucralose and acesulfame-potassium resulted in these sweeteners transferring to their breastmilk36. However, this was a small study and more research is needed to investigate whether this might have any negative health effects for a baby consuming this breastmilk.
The evidence base shows that artificial sweeteners and bulk sweeteners are safe for the general public to consume, including pregnant women (up to the advised ADI in the case of artificial sweeteners). However artificial sweeteners are not recommended for infants, children under three years old, and people with PKU need to avoid aspartame. There is no strong evidence that sweeteners increase the risk of cancer in humans; but there is good evidence that they are good for our teeth and can help to manage blood sugar levels. Sweeteners can also be useful as part of weight management interventions, especially for those with a sweet tooth.
Overall, sweeteners can be used as part of dietetic interventions, but as with most aspects of nutrition this should be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

my teeth
It's great to have a companion who is a dental specialist, isn't that so? Obviously, they won't treat you for nothing yet they can generally give you some valuable recommendation and caution you of threats you may have never at any point contemplated. What's more, shockingly, our oral wellbeing relies upon even the littlest subtleties. We at Bright Side didn't think about these easily overlooked details. In any case, presently we won't invest hours drinking some espresso. 1. Try not to brush your teeth directly subsequent to having a feast. It's extremely simple to harm your veneer along these lines (particularly on the off chance that you utilize a hard toothbrush). Nourishment and beverages disturb the pH-balance in the mouth and make the tooth finish somewhat gentler for a brief timeframe. Dental specialists prescribe brushing teeth no less than 30-40 minutes in the wake of having a feast. 2. Swimming pool guests are in danger. Obviously, no one says that swimming isn't valuable for your wellbeing. Be that as it may, the issue is that the synthetics used to purify the water in swimming pools terribly affect the teeth. During the 80s, American researchers distributed the aftereffects of an investigation that concentrated on the soundness of teeth of expert swimmers, 40% of whom experienced tooth lacquer harm. Things being what they are, what would it be a good idea for you to do? Attempt to keep the swimming pool water out of your mouth and swim in new or salt water in the mid year. 3. You should drink your espresso immediately and not through the span of 30 minutes. Consider the manner in which we drink tea or espresso at work. We pour the some hot espresso and savor it little tastes, continually conversing with our associate, and noting messages. While we are doing it, the espresso (particularly espresso with sugar) is taking a shot at obliterating the polish of our teeth. Along these lines, it's best to drink this refreshment as fast as could reasonably be expected. 4. There is a motivation behind why gynecologists prescribe having your teeth checked before arranging a pregnancy. irst, a cavity is an open wellspring of disease that spreads from the tooth tissues to the gums and could then get into the circulatory system and influence the baby. This could prompt untimely birth and the infant having genuine inherent sicknesses. Second, periodontitis is likewise extremely unsafe in light of the fact that it may diminish the conceptive capacity for the two people. Also, regardless of whether origination occurs, the infant may be conceived rashly or with an extremely low birth weight. 5. Brushing your teeth in the shower or on the latrine isn't the best thought. While dealing with your teeth, it's ideal on the off chance that you don't get occupied by whatever else. This is a procedure that should be done mindfully. Also, so as to show your kids to brush their teeth for a specific time, specialists prescribe turning on their main tune. It will catch your infant's eye for 2-3 minutes (this is to what extent it takes to evacuate dental plaque and dispose of microbes). 6. Beans can harm terrible teeth considerably more. Who might have believed that beans could harm teeth? It's about the phytohemagglutinin that they contain, the protein incites speedy cell division. In the event that you have a tooth cavity, eating beans can prompt a granuloma. Obviously, the hazard is very low, however it's best to ensure you have no dental issues previously you eat beans. 7. Oral wellbeing is associated with our memory Researchers directed research with 273 volunteers who were 55 years of age and more established. What's more, they arrived at the resolution that individuals who don't have every one of their teeth had a more terrible memory, were increasingly touchy, and were progressively defenseless to temperament swings. Therefore, there is a hypothesis that losing teeth makes the quantity of tangible signs that they send to the cerebrum lower. This is the reason dental practitioners prescribe utilizing each open door you get the chance to spare a tooth. It's incredible that today there are even advancements that enable you to remake the tooth in the event that you have just the root. 8. A youngster's nibble can be changed by a virus. Obviously, if a youngster gets a cold a few times per year, it's flawlessly typical. Be that as it may, if an individual gets a cold time and again in early youth, they may have an issue with their nibble. An individual who can't inhale through their nose is compelled to inhale through their mouth. The facial skeleton is effectively twisted at this age, and this may cause the lower jaw to push somewhat ahead. For this situation, a dental specialist may prescribe seeing a master first to ensure the nose is fine. Something else, the exertion you put into settling the chomp can be futile. 9. Try not to bite on ice and don't puncture your tongue. In the event that you get yourself continually biting on ice (or eating a great deal of nuts), you can harm your gums and your tooth veneer. Your dental fillings are likewise in danger. The equivalent goes for puncturing your tongue: a bit of metal in your tongue is a wellspring of conceivable mechanical harm to your teeth. Along these lines, don't utilize your teeth to open packs of nourishment, jars of coke, etc. It's smarter to spend a few additional seconds to do it legitimately and not put your teeth in risk. Do you have your very own tooth care privileged insights? It is safe to say that you are prepared to impart them to us in the remark segment underneath? from Blogger http://bit.ly/2RZnyrX via IFTTT

MY GREENPAN LOVE AFFAIR
HOW IT STARTED
It started innocently. I needed a new non-stick frying pan. A trusted friend suggested GreenPan, so off I went to my computer and straight to Amazon. I must admit I didn’t do much research beyond choosing the size I wanted, reading the brief product description and looking at the number of customer reviews because I thought, it’s just a pan, just a needed tool and nothing more. My new pan arrived and I instantly liked how it looked, felt and performed—that was three years ago—but love struck in the science.
I’m a bit embarrassed to admit this part of my GreenPan love story. I can safely call myself a health nut in training. Long ago, I stopped eating food with ingredients I couldn’t pronounce and started eating as much organic as possible; I started taking Omega 3-6-9 fatty acids along with B complex, vitamin D and pro-biotics; I stopped cooking with olive oil and switched to coconut oil; I started cardio and weights 5-6 times per week; and I changed my weekly Ocado shop to include more salmon, eggs, oats, berries and as many leafy greens as possible. I have vices—mostly in the form of Diet Coke, sugar and a glass (or three) of Malbec a few times per week.
The embarrassing part of my story is that although I have consciously taken care of my body and mind for 20+ years, it’s only recently that I discovered the most obvious, insidious monster hiding in my cabinets: my cookware.
A CRASH COURSE IN TOXIC CHEMICALS
Once I started researching what is in my Teflon non-stick cookware, I became obsessed and couldn’t erase it from my brain. Images of dead birds, toxic fumes and environmental damage circle my thoughts, demanding attention, leading me to write this blog. I feel a bit like Erin Brockovich trying to reveal the truth.
This story is confusing, laced with polysyllabic words and acronyms—almost intentionally to discourage science novices like me from probing deeper—companies within companies, lawsuits, and decades of research. As I read 100s of articles and reports, I struggled keeping the players straight in my head; as I wrote, I struggled organising my thoughts. I want to spare you that same anguish and add some clarity with the brief overview below:
PFAS (per- and poly-perfluoroalkyl substances) are a family of chemicals, including PFOA (also known as C-8), PFOS and GenX (also known as C-6). These chemicals are used in the production of non-stick cookware, water-repellent clothing, water-proof clothing, Gor-Tex, Scotchguard, cleaning supplies, stain-resistant furniture, stain-resistant carpets, and much more.
PFC (perflourinated chemicals) are a group of manufactured compounds used to make products waterproof, stain-resistant and non-stick. If that sounds a bit like PFAS, that’s because it is. They are the same. Just another acronym to describe these toxic chemicals.
Teflon is the brand name for the non-stick coating used in cookware (also known as PTFE), which is owned by Chemours, which is a spin-off of DuPont. PFOA (C-8) is used during the production of Teflon.
Scotchguard is a product produced by 3M to protect clothing, fabrics, upholstery and carpets from stains. In 2003, 3M replaced toxic PFOS with a new compound called PFBS (perfluorobutanesulfonic acid).
Gore-Tex is a waterproof fabric that uses PTFE. It’s the same as Teflon. In 2013, Gore eliminated the use of PFOA.
DuPont is an American conglomerate worth more than $25 billion, specialising in electronics, manufacturing, agriculture and more.
3M is another American conglomerate worth more than $32 billion, specialising in consumer goods and health.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is an US independent public body responsible for protecting human and environmental health. The World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and United Nations, among others, also address and try to resolve the same health and environmental issues.
THE TRUTH BEHIND PFAS
Without digging too deep into chemistry and the thousands of scientific studies, you should know that PFAS is a known carcinogen. Fact. Remember, that’s the stuff used to make non-stick cookware. Just read any of the sources I’ve included below. It has been proven to cause liver toxicity, weakened immune systems, hormonal changes, thyroid disease, testicular cancer and pregnancy-induced hypertension (just to name a few). Recently, PFAS has been linked to obesity. None of this is new information. Companies have known for decades.
In the early 1960’s, DuPont and 3M began conducting secret medical studies on PFOA (later known as C-8 and part of the PFAS family). They quickly concluded that it did not break down in the environment and that PFOA bound to plasma proteins in the blood, circulating through every organ in the body. They suspected it could cause health problems.
"PFOA (C-8) is persistent in the environment. It does not hydrolyse, photolyse or biodegrade under environmental conditions" -- EWG
In the 1970’s, DuPont discovered high concentrations of PFOA in factory workers at their West Virginia plant, where Teflon and other products were manufactured. By 1976, 3M publicly confirmed that PFOA was “completely resistant to biodegradation”. 3M also had evidence of toxic effects on fish and negative effects on the immune system. You’d think this would be the start of environmentalists picketing DuPont and 3M to stop using these harmful chemical, but not much more than whispers were heard for another 20+ years.
In 1981, 3M concluded that PFOA caused birth defects in rats. 3M shared this information with DuPont. DuPont responded by testing children of pregnant employees at their West Virginia plant, discovering that two out of the seven children tested had eye defects. By 1989, DuPont employees at the same plant found an elevated number of leukaemia deaths, then kidney cancer, then prostate cancer, then…but DuPont chose to ignore the evidence, not alert the EPA and not change.
In 1999, the EPA ordered eight major companies, including DuPont and 3M, to examine the effects of PSAFs on humans after receiving data on the global distribution and toxicity of PFOA and PFOS.
Bowing to EPA pressure or finally taking responsibility and understanding that PSAFs are dangerous (I don’t care the motive), 3M stopped using PFOS and PFOA in 2000. It’s important to note that this little chemical was a key ingredient in Scotchguard. By 2003, 3M launched a new formulation of Scotchguard that included PFBS in place of PFOS (which doesn’t sound much like a change at all, but it’s all down to the number of carbons).
DuPont, however, wasn’t so quick to change their ways. They buried all medical and environmental studies until 2000 when a lawyer from West Virginia got a court order demanding DuPont release all documents related to PFOA (there were more than 110,000 pages at the time). The West Virginia legal issue proved to be just a small hiccough for DuPont as they focused their attention on seizing opportunity.
In 2002, after 3M stopped using PFOA and PFOS, DuPont decided to build a plant in North Carolina to manufacture these chemicals. Already under litigation and renewed focus by the EPA, DuPont seemed determined to stay until the end, contaminating water, killing wildlife and causing cancer.
"These chemicals never go away. They persist indefinitely, causing continued damage and unknown long-term consequences."
In 2003, a report issued by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) summarised the EPA’s findings that “PFOA (C-8) is persistent in the environment. It does not hydrolyse, photolyse or biodegrade under environmental conditions”. The report also states:
“Even if PFOA were banned today, the global mass of PFOA would continue to rise, and concentrations of PFOA in human blood could continue to build. Long after PFOA is banned, other PFC chemicals from 50 years of consumer products will continue to break down into their terminal PFOA end product, in the environment and in the human body.”
In 2005, DuPont once again proved its reluctance to change (and even its complicity in ignoring the dangers of these chemicals for decades) when it reached a settlement agreement with the EPA for $16.5 million ($10.25 million of which was for fines). The charge was withholding decades of information about health hazards associated with PFOA and PFOS. Specifically:
"DuPont had long known that PFOA caused cancer, had poisoned drinking water in the mid-Ohio River Valley and polluted the blood of people and animals worldwide. But it never told its workers, local officials and residents, state regulators, or the EPA."
At the time, that fine was the largest the EPA had ever assessed, but it was too small to act as a deterrent for this multi-billion-dollar company, just a minor annoyance on DuPont’s P&L.
If you’re wondering how any of this relates to GreenPan, just stick with me a little longer and I will explain.
In 2006, following 3M’s lead, six companies agreed to phase out PFOA and PFOS by 2015 under the guidance of the EPA, but environmental damage was already done, and will persist indefinitely. Recently, soil and water samples as far as the Arctic caps show high levels of these compounds. Remember, these chemicals are proved carcinogens. The EPA estimates that “contamination in food may account for more than 90% of human exposure to PFOS and PFOA, most of which comes from fish.”
In 2009, PFOS (part of the PFAS family) was determined to be a persistent organic pollutant (POP) by the Stockholm Convention and ordered to be eliminated or restricted. POPs are “chemical substances that persist in the environment, bio-accumulate through the food web, and pose a risk of causing adverse effects to human health and the environment.” All chemicals in the PFAS family are nasty.
According to the Madrid Statement, published in 2015 and based on the consensus of more than 200 scientists world-wide, PFASs cause “neonatal toxicity and death, and tumors in multiple organ systems”. The statement further cautions consumers about the risks of PFASs, advises companies to stop using them and urges governments to “enact legislation to require only the essential uses of PFSASs and enforce labelling to indicate uses”. I’m not convinced there are any “essential uses” of these proven carcinogenic chemicals.
In 2017, after more than a decade, DuPont settled 3,550 personal injury claims for $671 million. The case? PFOA (C-8) leaked from DuPont’s manufacturing plant in West Virginia, causing various cancers and other serious health problems, while DuPont told no one, despite DuPont’s knowledge that these chemicals were harmful to humans. The lawsuit claimed that:
"DuPont intentionally concealed the dangers of PFAS from government entities and the public at large in order to protect its profits and avoid public responsibility for injuries."
Studies conducted during the lawsuit revealed that “the chemical had probable links to diseases, including kidney cancer, testicular cancer, ulcerative colitis and high cholesterol”. [The case is fascinating and worth a thorough review. Read The Lawyer Who Became DuPont’s Worst Nightmare]
In February 2018, the state of Ohio issued a lawsuit to DuPont for dumping PFOA (C-8) for more than 60 years despite DuPont knowing the chemicals are harmful to people. It seeks restitution and damages for Ohio in investigating and cleaning up contamination from the chemical.
Do you see a trend?
3M is just as guilty. In February 2018, 3M settled a lawsuit for $850 million. This one is over PFC (which includes PFOA) that got into Minnesota’s drinking water. I’m willing to give them a second chance (although very, very small) because they stopped using PFOA and PFOS in 2002.
But the EPA also isn’t innocent. It’s unclear precisely what the EPA knew about 3M, DuPont and PSAFs, and when they knew it because the 1990's and 2000's were turbulent years on many fronts. Regardless, the EPA sat on confirmed and suspected information about PFAS for 18 years, allowing more water contamination, more environmental damage and unknown health risks.
Many other cases have been heard and are being prepared over the same nasty chemicals, for which the scientific community is still only beginning to understand the long-term affects on humans, animals and the environment. From what I see, it’s frightening.
The dangers of PFAS (all forms, not just the ones already banned) are real, global companies like Dupont and 3M have known for decades and it’s time the world paid attention and demanded a complete and total ban.
Now we're getting to the next big shocker: PTFE. Remember that PFOA (C-8) is NOT the same as PTFE. Confusing yes, but PTFE is the chemical name for Teflon and PFOA is used in the production of Teflon. Both are bad for different reasons.
THE BIRDS AND PTFE
If you’re not appropriately concerned by now, then just think about the birds. For more than 30 years, bird lovers and veterinarians have known that Teflon kills birds. Even as early as 1975, a peer-reviewed article published by five doctors and researchers concluded that:
“Five cocatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) died within 30 minutes following exposure to fumes from a frying pan coated with the "non-stick" plastic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) that had accidentally overheated. Within an hour the owner developed symptoms of "polymer fume fever" but recovered in the next 24 hours. Clinical signs and post mortem lesions of the cockatiels are described and reference is made to the unusual susceptibility of parakeets to the pyrolysis products of frying pans coated with PTFE.”
There are thousands of well-documented cases of birds dying after exposure to the toxins released when cooking with Teflon non-stick pans—not in a laboratory, but in regular household kitchens, cooking regular family meals. The report Canaries in the Kitchen reveals that the lungs of these exposed birds “haemorrhage and fill with fluid, leading to suffocation.” These are the same toxins you ingest when cooking on Teflon.
Not convinced? Check the warning label on Teflon cookware:
According to a study by Environmental Working Group (EWG), it only takes two to five minutes of heating to reach temperatures high enough to release dangerous toxins. Even DuPont’s own scientists acknowledge that its non-stick cookware breaks into 15 types of toxic gases and particles when heated—and they have known this for more than 50 years.
What about Gore-Tex (the clothing equivalent of Teflon)? As of 2013, they stopped using PFOA (C-8), but that just addresses how Gore-Tex is produced, not what its made of. What about products already produced (of which I own several)? It’s the same material as Teflon, but for clothing. I couldn’t find conclusive information about dangers of wearing Gore-Tex, but I have to wonder given that PTFE is a proven carcinogen and is proven to harm the environment, and if you heat Teflon it is proven to kill birds, then shouldn’t I be concerned? What do I have to do to prove it? Sit in the sun wearing a Gore-Tex coat and see if the bird next to me dies?
THE NEXT GENERATION—JUST AS BAD, BUT WITH A SEXIER TRADEMARK
As of 1 January 2016, PFOA (C-8) can no longer be imported or used in manufacturing in the US—essentially making it a banned substance. A victory for environmentalists and health experts, but not a total solution. Already knowing the day would come when C-8 was banned, DuPont, 3M and other conglomerates looked for alternatives. DuPont took the reins.
A clever magic trick was performed. Part lack of imagination and part fear of losing a multi-billion-dollar industry, DuPont tweaked the formula for C-8, renamed it GenX (a bit sexier than what it’s really called: C-6) and marked it as safe. I’m not convinced. Aren’t these the same guys who knew the dangers of C-8 for decades but kept silent? Why should I trust them now?
"If you drink contaminated water, these compounds will rapidly move into your bloodstream and be circulated so that they can reach all the organs of the body." -- Dr. Grandjean
It looks to me like C-6 is the same nasty chemical that causes the same harmful health and environmental problems as the older generation. If I need proof, I must only consider that their tweak was adding an extra oxygen atom to the middle of the chain. The purpose of this harmless oxygen atom? Scientists thought it would make the compound “less persistent and it would pass through the body more quickly” which really means C-6 has a shorter half-life than C-8. But isn’t C-8 the chemical 3M said in 1976 that “does not degrade”? So, what does a shorter half-life mean? It will degrade in 10,000 years instead of 20,000? Who cares, we’ll all be dead anyway. Where I am stuck is that if C-6’s older sister is a proven carcinogen (one that DuPont tried to hide), how can I believe it’s not a family thing and how can I trust anything DuPont says?
Manufacturers have a bit of a head start before ringing alarm bells (not that they would) because C-6 is relatively new. However, scientific data is already looking a bit suspicious and you should know now that this touted safe chemical (C-6) is already being found within a 400 mile radius of processing plants in the Netherlands, North Carolina and West Virginia. It’s already in our drinking water, spreading fast and affecting aquatic life.
In January 2018, a study published by researchers in Sweden reveals shocking findings about C-6 (GenX) and its so-called safety. They claim GenX is more toxic than C-8 (PFOA):
When differences in the rates of distribution and elimination of these chemicals in the body are accounted for, the study says, “some fluorinated alternatives have similar or higher toxic potency than their predecessors.” (Environ. Int., 2018, DOI: 10.1016/j.envint.2018.01.011).
Even today, C-8 (PFOA), a proven toxin and carcinogen, is found in the bloodstream of 98% of Americans. Now we see C-6 in water supplies. What’s next? Do we have to wait a decade for more lawsuits to pile up, agencies given enough ammunition to ban C-6 or enough public outcry so DuPont stops?
In June 2017, Dr. Philippe Grandjean, from the Harvard School of Public Health, expressed concerns regarding the similarity between C-8 and C-6 on the environment:
“These compounds don’t break down…Once they are loose in the environment, they are loose and that’s it…This is parallel to what we knew about PFOA (C-8) in the 1990s, and my concern is that these new GenX compounds have the same properties, I would be concerned that there might be additional toxic effects.”
Dr. Grandjean makes even more troubling comparisons when addressing the effect of C-8 and C-6 on humans. GenX, he states, is easily absorbed.
“But the fact of the matter is yes [these compounds] do leave the bloodstream, but that is because they are accumulated in the body, the liver the kidneys the lungs, and so just because some of them appear to disappear from the blood rapidly, that may not indicate that they have disappeared from the body as a whole… If you drink contaminated water, these compounds will rapidly move into your bloodstream and be circulated so that they can reach all the organs of the body.”
When will we learn?
WHY GREENPAN
Now I’m back to where I started—a much happier place. I first loved GreenPan because it worked, now I am loyal for life because it’s also safe. GreenPan is the only non-C-8, non-C-6, non-PTFE, non-lead, non-cadmium and non-stick ceramic cookware on the market.
Why am I intent on non-stick? I’m a busy mum and not a gourmet chef, so I prefer non-stick cookware because it’s easier and healthier. I prefer ceramic because it heats quickly and cooks evenly—no hot spots or burned spots.
GreenPan uses a ceramic coating called Thermolon™ for its non-stick cookware. It is a natural substance (meaning it’s inorganic, which makes it sound bad, but think of it like pure sand). It does not contain the nasty chemicals I’ve covered in this blog so it’s safe for my family and the environment. On the rare occasion I have overheated (or even forgotten about) my GreenPan cookware, I feel safe that the family bird hasn’t been poisoned (although I don’t have one) and relieved that my pan emerges unharmed. I use my first GreenPan almost daily and it looks as good and performs as well as the day I first got it. No pan in my kitchen has ever lasted this long, except a cast iron one that’s approaching 18 years, but it’s a beast to use so I never do.
I’ve learned that not all ceramic cookware is created equally. Learn to read labels. Some ceramic cookware manufacturers add chemicals and metals to make their ceramic cookware stronger and last longer. What these chemicals are is unclear, just murmurs on social media, and not enough to warrant reasonable uproar now, but I’ll be watching.
Although cost is not my main motivation—it’s after health and performance—GreenPan is affordable. A LeCreuset pan starts at £100, while GreenPan is closer to £50.
Trust also adds to my GreenPan love story. As I quickly learned while researching large manufacturers for this blog, trust is important. I trust GreenPan. The company started 10 years ago by two school friends who saw a problem in the market. They did what every great entrepreneur does and tried to fix it. The result is GreenPan.
What I also love is that these founders are intent on improving the quality and performance of their products—they never stop. It sounds like a no-brainer, but many companies stop research when they get to market. Not true for GreenPan.
CONCLUSIONS
Even if my conclusions are laced with emotion and I’ve skipped some critical chemistry, I’ve researched enough to know that I don’t trust any chemical related to PFAS. I don’t like the thought of substances that pollute the environment, I don’t like the thought that breathing in fumes from cooking on Teflon-coated pans could cause “flu-like symptoms”. I don’t like the thought that I should constantly measure the temperature of my pan or check that the canary in her cage is still alive to know I’m safe. I just want to cook for my family and keep everyone I love safe.
These chemicals hurt the environment. FACT.
These chemicals kill birds. FACT.
These chemicals are carcinogens. FACT.
Now you know. Now you can’t un-know. Do the research and spread the word.
DISCLAIMERS
Manufacturers claim that once the non-stick surface is sprayed on cookware during production, the PFOA is burned off and leaves no trace. Without touring the production facilities or getting a master’s degree in chemistry, that sounds like a possible explanation, but a bigger question remains. Even if the PFOA is completely gone, why use a known carcinogen? Even worse, remember the birds. If you cook with Teflon, toxic fumes that kill birds are still emitted. How can that be safe for humans?
I have made every attempt to cite sources and present a fair analysis of the facts. If sources are incorrect or I made a mistake interpreting the data, I cannot be held liable. However, I would appreciate a note so I can correct the information. Knowledge is power.

The Wonders of Ginger
[ad_1]
The rhizome Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been used in Asia for centuries as a culinary spice and as a medicinal for the treatment of various ailments. The milder young ginger root as well as the more pungent mature root is used in Chinese and Japanese cuisine to flavor dishes. In the Qing Dynasty it was even used to make a ginger-flavored liqueur called Canton. In Great Britain ginger is used in the production of a spirited beverage called Crabbie's Green Ginger Wine. Both the Orientals and Arabs use ginger infusions to flavor their coffee and tea, while in the West the traditional use is to flavor cookies and candies, and in the beverage ginger ale.
A most unusual use of ginger was amongst pre-WWI British mounted regiments when during public ceremonies a peeled ginger root suppository was placed in the horse's rectum. The practice known as figging (or feauging), resulted in a burning sensation, while leaving no permanent damage; it made the horses hold their heads and tails high. As you can well imagine this practice in humans is observed within the S&M community.
In medicine, Ginger root (a misnomer as it is not a root but rather a horizontal subterranean stem) is use by TCM doctors for gastrointestinal illness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and arthritic disease. In the United States it has been used to treat gastrointestinal upset, nausea, motion sickness, pregnancy-induced nausea and arthritis mostly in folk medicine and alternative medicine. It may be gradually gaining acceptance in traditional western medicine in this country with recent scientific studies reporting positive outcomes.
The flavor and characteristic sent of ginger root is due to a mixture of zingerone, shoagoles and gingerols which are the volatile oils making up about 3% of the dry weight of fresh ginger. Gingerols are the medicinal components having analgesic, sedative, antipyretic, antiemetic and antibacterial properties in addition to reducing gastrointestinal motility. Gingerol ( [6]-gingerol ) is a relative of capsaicin, the compound that gives peppers their hot spicy taste. When gingerol is exposed to heat (such as in cooking) it is transformed into zingerone with its more palatable less pungent and spicy-sweet aroma.
The mechanism of action of ginger is poorly understood, however the antiemetic properties may be due to inhibition of serotonin receptors which exert affect directly on the gastrointestinal and central nervous system. The use of ginger in the treatment of arthritic disease such as osteoarthritis and rheumatism may be due to the fact that ginger inhibits the activation of tumor necrosis factor-alfa (TNF-a) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression, thus acting as an anti-inflammatory agent.
Ginger has been used for years as an over-the-counter preparation for treating motion sickness without the drowsiness of medications such as dimenhydrinate (Dramamine). It apparently works pretty well, according to some scientific studies conducted on seagoing naval cadets. While a rather entertaining "scientific" study on Discovery TV's hit show the MythBusters explored [in "Episode 43: Seasickness - Kill or Cure" (premiered: Nov. 16, 2005 )] several non-pharmaceutical remedies along with placebo to tackle Adam's very sensitive motion sickness. Ginger happened to be one of the more successful "home remedies" to combat this illness on the show. Now back to double-blinded peer reviewed published studies. In pregnancy-induced nausea several trials show comparable effectiveness with vitamin B6 and superiority over placebo of ginger to control morning sickness. The Cochrane review showed ginger as a safe (for baby and mommy) and effective antiemetic in pregnancy.
There are also studies to substantiate the use of ginger in post-operative nausea (post anesthesia). Ginger did not fare as well in controlling chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting however.
How does ginger stack up when treating arthritic pain? Where several studies showed mixed results when ginger was used to treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, a couple of trials did show statistically significant pain relief and reduction in swelling with the use of ginger. Ginger has also been studied in in vitro models and animals for conditions ranging from the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections, cancers and as anti-hypertensive agents. However, not many have been successfully studied in humans.
There does not appear to be any significant toxicity with Ginger. Although the FDA considers Ginger rather safe, there is a theoretical risk when used with the blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin). At high doses Ginger may cause elevation in protimes (PT) of those who take this medication. The only other caution to be observed is the use of this herb in people with gallbladder disease; those suffering gallstones may have an exacerbation in their condition as ginger releases bile from the gallbladder.
Clinical trials typically use 250 mg to 1000 mg of standardized powdered ginger root in capsular form. This dose is taken anywhere from once to four times a day. For pregnancy-induced nausea studies a successful regiment is 250 mg four times daily has been used.
In my neck of the woods a common beverage consumed by folks today started out as a local medicinal. The "world famous" Blenheim Ginger Ale is bottled less than 15 miles from my home in Bennettsville, SC. Blenheim Ginger Ale is named after the natural mineral spring in Blenheim, SC. Dr. C. R. May in the late 1800's advised patients to drink this mineral water to sooth their upset stomachs. When it was reported that the remedy worked, but that many of the patients disliked the strong mineral taste of the water he added Jamaican Ginger to the water, thus spawning the now famous ginger ale. Jamaican Ginger has historically been used as a medicinal. It is classified as a stimulant and carminative for treatment of dyspepsia and colic and the tea brewed from the root was a folk remedy for colds. In 1903 Dr. May teamed up with a partner to bottle the product under the Blenheim Bottling Company. To this day it is considered the oldest and smallest bottling company in America. Some folks today use the "HOT" red-topped Blenheim Ginger Ale more as a medicinal than a soft drink for the treatment of sore throats, colds, the flu, and to settle their stomachaches. Renown journalist Charles Kuralt in his famous "On the Road" TV series featured the ginger ale on one of his episodes, and Penn Jillette (of the comic-magic duo Penn & Teller) is reportedly a big fan of the beverage. Penn was pictured on the cover of a September 1994 Wired magazine issue wearing a Blenheim T-Shirt, bottle in hand. Cheers!

Pregnant women can not eat what food (early pregnancy can not eat anything)
Pregnant, pregnant women can not eat what foods do you know? The nutritional needs of pregnant women diet on this special arrangements, as everyone knows, but how to arrange, what to eat good food, and what food cannot eat these problems, or most of the non pregnant mothers are not very clear. To understand the knowledge of health care during pregnancy, pregnant mothers to be and learning! Here are some of the fruits, drinks, and seafood that we can't eat during pregnancy.
Pregnant women should not eat those fruits:
1, papaya: specific reasons to forget, as if it will lead to miscarriage, so can not eat
2, hawthorn: Hawthorn on the contraction of women's uterus, and if pregnant women eat large amounts of Hawthorn food, it will stimulate the contraction of the uterus, and even lead to miscarriage
3 grapes: do not eat more, will be high blood sugar
4, persimmon: can not eat, afraid to lead to abortion
5: Longan: can not eat, it can stimulate uterine contraction, especially in late pregnancy
6, grapefruit: Grapefruit cold, eat too much will hurt Yang, the body Yang, aversion to cold, stomach weak, pregnant women should not eat or do not eat the best
7, pineapple: pineapple contains a substance called protease, human skin, blood vessels and so on have some side effects. People who are allergic to food can cause pineapple poisoning, which is called pineapple disease". After eating 15 minutes to 1 hours or so, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, but also allergic symptoms, such as headache, itching all over the body, limbs and mouth numbness, severe breathing difficulties, shock, and so on.
Therefore, it is better to suggest that pregnant women should eat less, especially the first eater, especially to take care of allergies. Expert advice: eat the pineapple peel off, first, dig and cut the pudding, dipped in salt water, the decomposition of organic acid in brine, to reduce the risk of poisoning.
