like, it's really fun how fontaine starts spiralling out the closer jack gets to him in the final arc of the game and returns to appropriating the image of family (the fake family in the beginning, the flawed father position later) to try and appeal to jack in some way but it's like. buddy. baby. you already took off your mask. anything you try and put on after this is going to come across as cheap and desperate. the magic is gone! and personally? I love that ship where both characters are introduced as friendly, only for one to turn out to have been lying the whole time and try to kill the other, all of which eventually culminates in their defeat and dramatic (and literal) fall, only then for them to return as a reluctant ally of their once enemy who knows them way too well and whose new relationship with them is largely interpreted as bantery. What do you mean which one.

Man I love act 2 Natsuki so so much we gotta talk about her more aaugghhhh

I swear it was said somewhere that Natsuki was changed the least because out of all the club members Monika could make her unlikeable simply by proxy of Yuri being messed up too, someone who Monika saw as more competition compared to her. Similar to act 2 Yuri being a slap in the face to her self doubt about secretly being an overly pushy creep, changing Natsuki the least feels like a slap in the face to her whole side stories arc about feeling like an awful person nobody likes. Monika probably knows about all her self doubts too and is still basically like “you’re right :) you are so unlikable that I don’t even have to change you that much to make someone think you’re just as repulsive as a freaky yandere”

Because of this Monika was mostly focused on Yuri this whole time, slowly neglecting Natsuki until the narrative started doing it too. Between Yuri and Monika forcing themselves on the player, Natsuki who is notably less pushy gets instead pushed away and sidelined by them. Considering her whole backstory and arc in the side stories, it’s kinda ironic that the one safe space she has ended up neglecting her needs too.

It’s kinda depressing though man her old friends make her ignore her feelings and put up with their abuse. Her home life is ambiguous most of the time but at best her dad neglects her feelings and needs and by act 2 he’s abusive to the point of life threatening child abuse. And then her last and only safe space changes to become distant and rude, where they dismiss all her wants and concerns while putting down her interests and very existence in the club, all for a boy who just got here. This club was supposed to be a safe space full of welcoming people who would let her be who she is. It was supposed to be the one place she wouldn’t get yelled or sneered at for voicing her opinion. It was supposed to be the place where she could ~write the way into her heart~ or whatever. But now it’s just become another source of abuse in her life

She has to conform to everyone else’s needs instead, and no matter how much she may want to she has no power in her life. She has to watch as every person in her life abuses and neglects her. She never gets to be vice president. She never gets to be in the loop and find out why everyone is acting strange. She never gets to know why the club is tearing itself apart. The world is breaking and she can never learn why, she can only sit by in silence and suffer in the background as everyone else takes hold in the narrative. She tries reaching out but nobody actually respects her enough to let her do anything, and the only thing keeping her from giving up and leaving is the fact that she has nothing else, and maybe this time things will get better. But they don’t. She doesn’t belong anywhere. She has no power here. She can’t change things no matter what she does

Yet despite this she ironically ends up becoming the most normal person ever in the club. The girl with literally zero healthy relationships in her life. The tsundere. Is the voice of reason.

Monika you suck at your job

Everyone around her is going insane. Yuri is becoming obsessive to the point of uncharacteristic aggression, Sayori just doesn’t exist, Monika is ignoring it all and acting like everything’s normal, and mc as the closest thing to normal this club is gonna get is also becoming more and more of a blank slate. She’s alone in this.

And yet despite all of that she still cares about her friends. Even if Monika tries to get her to ignore it, she still cares about Yuri and is worried about her more than anything. Despite Monika’s attempts to dehumanized the club, Natsuki never yields to her control. She’s the one to call everyone out on how weird everything is, cutting through Monika’s facade and realizing that something is wrong. She desperately wants things to be okay again, for Yuri to be okay even after seeing the way she acts, for you to listen to her since you’re the only other person who could do something.

She tries reaching out with her last note, pleading for you to do something. Even if Monika takes that moment away because she still wants to act like nothing is wrong, the player remembers. You remember that Monika tried to get you to leave you club members to suffer, and you remember that Natsuki is still a real human being reacting to these things, not just a set of scripts. And the player recognizes that Natsuki cares, even if they can’t do anything about it.

Despite Monika trying to reinforce her being a bad person, Natsuki’s character ended up shining way more than it would have had it just been act 1. Even through all of Monika’s attempts, Natsuki still makes it apparent that she can be a good person and that she really deeply cares about the people around her, even if it takes a lot to show it. While a stubborn tsundere is hatable, her stubbornness here to just be herself ironically ended up as a strength. The anime trope ended up as a boon. Suck it Monika 😎

Throughout the constant dehumanizations as cliche lines of code, Natsuki retains her humanity until the very end. While Sayori and Yuri’s last moments are them succumbing to Monika’s control, her final moments let her retain her humanity.

By puking in the floor yeah. But with all of Monika’s efforts to get her to act like nothing’s wrong, her having a normal human reaction to a three day old corpse compared to complete nonchalance makes her seem more human than Monika ironically enough. She probably would have wanted Natsuki to ignore it too, but no matter what she did she couldn’t stop her from being herself. Her desire for perfection compared to Natsuki seeing the world how it is a bit of a rebellion to everything Monika stands for, and in the end, Natsuki gets to have the win in some little way.

Natsuki being the least altered is interesting cause on one hand it says some about a person when Ms. Access doesn’t bother hitting you with the asshole beam to make you look like an asshole, but on the other hand she does still try to make Natsuki look bad, and its interesting to think about how that ended up failing. She’s still whole compared to the others who are altered beyond belief, and who she is isn’t all that hatable compared to what Monika wants you to think. Her best qualities still shine through, and despite all she perseveres until the end where Monika can only delete her to get rid of her.

Despite all of Monika’s attempts to twist the club apart, despite everyone else in the club becoming hostile and unfamiliar, despite everyone in her life treating her like she’s worthless, Natsuki is still herself. She’s stubbornly herself until the bitter end. And honestly who she is is pretty great. That’s all. Natsuki cool

Fakir's theme (Beethoven's Coriolan Overture) always struck me as funny because it stands apart from the other character's themes. Mytho has the delicate Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Rue the somber Gymnopedie No 1, Duck the cheerful Nutcracker Oveture etc... while Fakir's theme is well... LOUD.

It characterizes his most aggressive moments, mainly playing in scenes where he antagonizes Mytho and Duck.

This always sat a little weird with me as it is a very surface-level character theme for such a complex character. In contrast, Rue's theme tells us something about her motivations under the Kraehe persona. Fakir's on the other hand tells us that he's mean and aggressive... something any viewer who's gotten to a scene where the song plays already knows.

On one of my rewatches, though, I noticed that he has another song that functions as a sort of secondary theme: an excerpt from Scheherazade.

This song plays most notably throughout most of episode 12, while he is bonding with Duck. It shows up a few times later in season 2, mainly in scenes concerning Fakir's struggle to write. As such, I view it as a complementary theme to the Coriolan Overture.

Listening to the song, it feels much more in line with Fakir we've come to know him. The song can be a little delicate and a little sad with gentle wind solos that lead into loud, grand orchestral sections. The repetitiveness, tempo, and use of dramatic brass and strings give these louder sections a gallant, almost desperate tone. It's super fitting that this is the song that plays throughout the episode where we get the best sense of Fakir's natural personality when he isn't putting on the cold persona.

I don't really have a deeper analysis here I just think it's really fun that as his character develops he gets an additional theme. If you think about it the music in Tutu functions as a sort of jukebox musical--the world and characters are built around the songs. Once we start to get to know who Fakir really is, the music that represents him changes to reflect him better.

i've actually been sitting on these designs since september - october/november. The color are... subjective to change. I chose Mac and Winn's colors today. I think Winn's is fine but Mac's keeps throwing me off. Here's the first drawings I did for Mac and Winn.

I like to imagine they're in their own little department. Something to do with tech like an IT department (also to kind of play off of how they're not in the game but run a lot of important events outside of it). So they're not any cog type in specific (like boss, board, law, etc..etc).

Mac's a Macintosh 128k and Winn is just a computer mouse (the tail is supposed to be a little mouse pointer and those are wires in the back. Technically speaking, wires for mice are in the front by the scroll but we can get inaccurate here). Mac's screen can change colors and display options. Together they make the Matrix Team

Here's some Brian's that I did during class last semester. He was originally a mouse, but I found trying to design him was much more annoying than I thought. Then one day during class I had a beam of light hit into my head and made him a big. He's not specific or anything, I tried to do just a stereotypical bug (like how all dogs/cats in game are the same type). He has a triangular head to match his faceplate though :-] you could maybe imagine an ant if you'd like. I figure ants work like cogs in a machine.

The desk jockeys are there too! I haven't really drawn them, but they remain somewhat the same. Instead of being made by toons to look like cogs, they're now made by cogs to look like toons. They also can't teleport so it takes Brian 3x longer to get places, but do they act as multitoons kind of.

This is the only drawing I really have to show my design basis. And YES they are still taller than him because its funny. Ok I think that's all

oh my fucking god i feel. SO stupid rn at How i didnt make the (super sane very normal just absolutely. Yes. Surely) connection earlier but uhh

so anyway im now like 89% certain that whatever the "traces" of the narwhal that remain on ajax and facilitate their (ever-growing) innate connection are like. an actually fundamental aspect of it (them?) more or less.

why? because if you consider its pov just for a moment. the narwhal was literally about to depart teyvat for good. it had nearly finished consuming the primordial sea and preparing to breach surface to finish the job by eating the french for the leftovers their human bodies were made from. its an interstellar voyager it does not linger on planets it devours. it goes glug glug and it leaves.

and like if it wasnt for traveler intervening its confirmed through narzissenkreuz and renes world formula that teyvat wouldve just been destroyed. no one could have stopped the narwhal not neuvillette not focalors not anyone.

so what was the one other thing it did right before going for that french brunch? calling for ajax. getting them reunited in the primordial sea. like all the possible implications aside bc theres many different ways to speculate on the exact reasons why and the nature of that link. the point remains.

and its not only the calling from the narwhal side itself either bc this is ALL coinciding with the growth of a 'restless power' within ajax and his vision malfunctioning (the things celestia is literally confirmed to harvest energy thru to repair its damaged authority) and his connection with the narwhal reaching an actual conscious level (arguably subconscious n emotional too bc i find it Curious his mood is poor right as the narwhal is repeatedly described as positively malding to the point its boss fight mechanic is literally a rage meter). ajax' power is growing. his destiny is starting to shift and something is drawing him to fontaine... right as the narwhal is getting close to finished with the primordial sea. funny how it overlaps eh. how it aligns 🤨🤨 why are they orbiting each other like this (they should kiss)

(& not to even Mention how ajax just Happened to get that absolutely exponential and borderline unbelievable feat of power spike in extending his foul legacy endurance as massively as he did. while. within the primordial sea. with his narwhal. who had at that point all but incorporated the power of that sea into itself. i s2g if childe was getting passive home turf co-op bonus exp with a 4x multiplier automatically the whole 40+ days 💀💀)

i cant help but wonder if john is going to use his newfound projection abilities to save arthur next episode??? like we have only seen him use it the once, and while that was rlly draining on arthur's body, he was also kind of mirroring the kiy. i do think it would be interesting narratively if john Did have this ability but couldnt use it without the threat of mutual destruction (arthur's life and john's humanity) HOWEVER it would be fascinating if john, fuelled by much more selfless reasons than a power grab or protecting just himself, was able to project in some manner to help. because god knows an evil knife to the chest is NOT within your average medieval english barber-dentist-doctor's skillset
