Is Steel Or Iron Ore A Good Career Path?
Whether steel or iron ore is a good career path depends on a number of factors. These factors include the salary, education certificate, and skills required. In addition, the outlook of the industry for the future is also important. If the steel or iron ore industry is expected to experience growth, this could be a positive sign. On the other hand, if the outlook is not expected to be as favorable, this could be a negative sign.
Is steel/iron ore a good career path?
Regardless of whether you're interested in mining or just want to work in a steel factory, there are many jobs open in the industry. If you're interested in the industry, make sure you learn everything you can. It can be a challenging job, but it can also offer many benefits.
The steel industry is an important part of manufacturing in the U.S. It has helped generate a lot of revenue and provided jobs for many people. It is also environmentally friendly. As a result, it is not likely to go away anytime soon.
If you're interested in a job in the steel industry, you may want to consider getting a GED or even an associate's degree. These can help you to move up the corporate ladder. Also, you may want to take a tech certificate course in order to advance in the field.
Another important thing to consider is how you will get your foot in the door. Some entry level jobs can help you to make money quickly. In addition, you may be able to get promoted and move up the ladder.
Entry level jobs in steel/iron career path
Several entry level jobs in the steel/iron ore industry are available. These include truck drivers, miners, material handlers, and production workers. These positions require a variety of skills, but offer great benefits and opportunities.
Miners perform heavy machinery operations, such as raking rock to uncover iron ore. They may also drive a bulldozer or an excavator. They follow instructions from supervisors, whose job is to oversee mining operations.
Material handlers may be responsible for unloading metals or packaging finished coils. They may also be responsible for handling scrap metals. The demand for iron and steel is increasing in urban areas. The industry is not likely to go away soon, but there are some risks.
Iron Technicians are one of the highest-paying jobs in the steel/iron ore industry. These industrial professionals must be skilled in reading and writing, have a strong knowledge of iron, and be able to establish a positive work environment. They can earn around $933,198 annually. They may also work on weekends.
Other jobs include truck drivers, who deliver iron ore to steel mills. They may also do basic maintenance. A truck driver with a CDL license earns around $48K annually.
Average Salary in steel/iron career path
Those who work in the steel and iron industry enjoy good pay and job security. They are also offered health insurance and pension plans. This is a stable industry that will be around for years to come.
Various jobs are available in the steel industry, with the most popular being structural metal fabricators, welders, and truck drivers. The steel and iron industries are also growing in urban areas. This means that job opportunities are likely to increase.
Several factors affect the average salary in the steel/iron ore industry. The most important is on-the-job training. This will help you learn how to safely perform various tasks. You will also learn how to handle various equipment. Then, you may be able to move up the corporate ladder.
The newest technology has also increased the efficiency of the industry. For example, new mining technologies allow for a higher-quality mine to produce higher-quality ores, which means that new job opportunities are created.
One of the best paying jobs in the steel/iron ore industry is a mining machine operator. These workers operate large machinery and trucks to move iron ore to the mill. They need to be able to understand and follow directions, and they will also need to be physically fit.
Education certificate and Skill Requirements
Whether you are interested in a career path in the steel or iron ore industry, you may find that an education certificate and skill requirements are important. Although a high school diploma may be enough to land an entry-level job, most jobs require further education to qualify for a more advanced position.
In order to become an ironworker, you will need to enroll in an apprenticeship program. Most apprenticeships include classroom instruction and on-the-job training. These programs can be completed in a few years and make you more competitive for a job.
In addition to classroom instruction, you will learn to measure, cut, and install metals and rebar. You will also learn to measure the distance between objects and apply welding methods to create structural components. You will also learn to inspect the structural components for safety concerns.
In addition to learning the necessary skills, you will need to wear personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, hard hats, and gloves. You may also work at heights, so you need to be able to balance and be strong enough to guide heavy beams into place.
Future Industry Outlook of steel/iron career path
Getting a job in the steel/iron ore sector can be a smart move. It's a booming business that offers plenty of opportunities. However, there are some risks involved.
First, there is a fair amount of competition. Many companies are seeking ways to reduce the number of raw materials they use to make their steel products. The industry is also looking at new ways to reduce emissions. Using recycled steel products is one way manufacturers are trying to cut back on their carbon footprint.
Another way manufacturers are finding ways to reduce emissions is by using electric arc furnaces (EAFs) to produce steel. EAFs are less dependent on raw material deposits, meaning that they are cheaper to run. Increasing production capacity is another way to lower operational costs. EAFs can also be more easily placed near clients.
A lot of money has been spent on R&D projects to find new ways to manufacture steel. However, steel production is a cyclical business. This means that demand for steel plummets during economic downturns.
Pros of steel/iron career path
Unlike the average workforce, steel and iron workers enjoy a variety of advantages. They can enjoy a dependable salary, a sheltered pension plan and all-inclusive health insurance.
Steel and iron industry jobs require a lot of energy and hard work. Fortunately, most jobs offer solid benefits. Some jobs even offer bonuses.
Iron and steel are important to the global economy. The demand for these products will only increase as the world becomes more urbanized. In fact, it's estimated that steel production will continue to increase over the next two decades. Steel is also important for the construction industry, which needs materials to make buildings and tools.
The industry has been around for thousands of years. It's been one of the most reliable sectors of the economy. The industry is expected to grow by approximately 11 percent through 2022. The steel and iron industry boasts some of the world's largest companies.
The industry also has a multitude of jobs and career opportunities. A good place to start is by getting an apprenticeship. Apprentices work for two years and are then eligible to apply for real jobs.
Cons of steel/iron career path
Those considering a career in the steel/iron ore industry should understand the industry's potential pitfalls, especially the risks associated with working in this field. The pros of a steel/iron ore career, on the other hand, are numerous. They include high pay, sheltered pension plans, and health insurance.
There are many different roles within the industry, all of which require physical exertion and long hours. This is a good career option for people who enjoy physical activity, but it may not be for everyone.
The steel/iron ore industry is growing and offers many opportunities for people who want to work in a stable industry. It's also very rewarding and pays well. Steel is used in many different industries and goods, including body armor for soldiers, cookware, tools for construction workers, and more.
Steel is also very important in the global economy. The world uses over a billion tonnes of steel each year, making it one of the largest industries in the world.
If you're interested in working in this industry, you can enter the industry by completing a two-year apprenticeship program. Once you've completed the program, you can look for employment in one of the many companies operating in this sector.
Conclusion
Despite the risks, the steel and iron ore industry offers jobs and benefits that are extremely appealing. As the demand for iron and steel increases in tandem with the growing needs of modern society, jobs in this sector will continue to be in high demand.
If you are interested in pursuing a career in the steel and iron ore industry, there are many ways to get started. The first step is to obtain a high school diploma or GED. You can also choose to earn an associate's degree, which can help you get an office job.
The majority of the jobs available in the steel and iron ore industry are in mines or rigs. You can also find some corporate level positions. A majority of these jobs are entry level, which means they require very little education.
Steel and iron ore industries are often labor-intensive, which means you need to be physically strong and alert. You also need to be careful of your safety. You may also be exposed to environmental risks. However, these risks can be eliminated with the proper safety measures.

“Release Men For Important Work,” Windsor Star. October 9, 1942. Page 9. ---- SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont, Oct. 9. Many women have taken the place of men in jobs at the huge plant of the Algoma Steel Corporation here, thus releasing men with years of experience for more difficult work.
When the corporation first, issued an appeal for women workers, hundreds applied and a number were put to work at once as laborers. Others have since been employed as inspectors, checkers and recorders.
Groups of women can now be seen every day carrying rakes and light shovels, cleaning up the plant yards and salvaging scrap iron.

𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭 ꒰ᐢ. .ᐢ꒱
synopsis: your knight who is sworn to protect you is also who you sneak around wirh
tags: princess and knight trope, kingdom au, explicit, vulgar, cunnalingus, oral, penetration
wrd cnt: 1.8k
a/n: i need argenti
“A paragon knight of the Knights of Beauty. He embodies righteousness and honor, possessing an admirable nobility”
Oh please. Honor?
Like many others across the universe, you too were struck by the sophistication and beauty of Argenti.
But unlike the rest of them, you were close enough to see the thorns that adorn the rose.
Sure, Argenti is calm and courteous but spending enough time with him led you to see the truth behind the petals.
He’s so very kind, and praiseful.
Incredibly honest, especially about his lust.
Eager and forward, especially about how much he craves you.
Careful and humble, except when he fucks you.
His favorite place to do so is in the most ironic place of all, the Keep.
The strongest and safest place in the castle.
You weren’t blameless, he was once as hard as steel and now his hardness came from somewhere other than his heart.
It was something you were familiar with, especially when he snuck you out of your bed chamber and carried you to the Keep.
The minute the door closed, he’d pull you into him, pressing your body against his silver plates.
It wasn’t enough, as he dropped pieces of armor off him along with your clothes, quickly unwinding the bindings along the back of your corset and watching the rest of your fabric come down with it.
He trails a hand down your chest, first pulling your neck closer to his face so he could plant kisses down it, making sure to not leave marks; but he desperately wanted to. The entire kingdom adorned you, but he wanted so eagerly to show them he was yours. That he was the only person taking your breast into his mouth, and hearing your soft noises while he sat you down on his thigh and held your hips tight while pushing them back and forth.
He loved it when you said his name, even more when you moan.
He kept his hands planted on you, kissing and licking down your stomach.
“Argenti- please….”.
Without any hesitation, he obliged.
Only a “Yes, my princess” falling from his lips before they touch your inner thigh.
He picked you up and sat you down on a barrel, much higher up so he could stand tall and look up into your eyes while he ate you. Most eagerly at that.
“Fuck- yes! Just like that!” You sqeal, watching his blazen eyes never leave yours while his tongue circles your clit, his fingers prodding your hole and making the most insidious noises from your wet heat.
He wasn’t incredibly gentle in his ways, but chilvary never dies.
He always held your hand, soothed over your skin, and kissed every orifice before ruining it.
He was quick to tell you that he’d be there for you, always.
Even if you had no idea what was happening, he was there to help.
He’s been waiting a lifetime for you, and he’s here to fulfill your needs.
All of them.
And you loved him for it.
With a loud moan, he finally pulls his head away from between your legs and looks up at you, catching your eyes with his own.
“Ready, your highness?” He asked with a smile, knowing full well the answer.
He picks you up, holding you
He picks you up, holding you close to his chest and then pushes you down onto the barrel, looking down at you with his fiery eyes.
“I am”.
“Good, because I need this too…so desperately.” He says, before unsheathing his sword.
“Don’t move”.
He says, putting a finger over your lips, a stern expression on his face as he starts to enter you slowly, inch by inch.
“You’re so fucking tight, Y/n-.” He says as he enters you fully, gripping your thighs and thrusting deeper into you with each passing moment.
He grabs both sides of your hips, as he fucks you faster.
“Aeons, you’re beautiful.” He whispers into your ear, his hot breath causing goosebumps to cover your entire body.
You feel him start to go harder and deeper, until suddenly he stops and pulls out completely.
“Please don’t stop.” You beg, reaching for his cock and wrapping your hand around it, stroking it gently as he watches you intently.
“I have something else in mind….” He says firmly, turning you around so you’re facing away from him, straddling him as he holds onto your hips.
“Now, sit down slowly and take me deep inside of you.” He commands, leaning back against the wall and relaxing as you follow his orders, sitting down slowly until he’s buried deep within you.
“There we go, that’s perfect. Now just start- fuck…up and down slow and steady.” He says encouragingly, placing a hand on your lower back to support you as he pulls on your long braid.
You obey him without question, starting to grind against him slowly at first before picking up the pace.
“That’s right, just like that.” He moans, running his hands up and down your sides as he watches you pleasure him.
“Keep going, love. You’re doing great.” He encourages, his voice growing increasingly more desperate as he nears climax.
“Oh god, yes!” You cried out, feeling yourself getting closer and closer to climax as you keep going.
“Come on, Princess, give me everything. I need all of it- all of you.” He begs, tightening his grip on your ass as you pick up the pace even further.
“Yes! Yes- Fuck!” You scream, feeling him cum deep inside of you as you continue to grind against him until your release quickly follows.
“Thank you, Princess.”

The Harvest Moon is the full Moon that occurs nearest to the autumnal equinox date (September 22, 2024). This means that either September or October’s full Moon may take on the name “Harvest Moon” instead of its traditional name. Similarly, the Hunter’s Moon is the first full Moon to follow the Harvest Moon, meaning it can occur in either October or November.
The Harvest Moon & the Hunter’s Moon are unique in that they are not directly related to this folklore or restricted to a single month. Instead, they are tied to an astronomical event: the autumnal equinox!
• October’s full Hunter Moon orbits closer to Earth than any of the other full Moons this year, making one of the four supermoons of 2024! As the Moon drifts over the horizon around sunset, it may appear larger & more orange—how perfect for the fall season!
It is believed that this name originates from the fact that it was a signal for hunters to prepare for the upcoming cold winter by going hunting. This is because animals were beginning to fatten up in preparation for the winter season. Moreover, since fields had recently been cleared out under the Harvest Moon, hunters could easily spot deer & other animals that had come out to search for remaining scraps. Additionally, foxes & wolves would also come out to prey on these animals.

Samhain is about halfway between the autumnal equinox & winter solstice. It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals along with Imbolc, Beltane, & Lughnasa. Historically it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland, & the Isle of Man.
Samhain is believed to have Celtic pagan origins & some Neolithic passage tombs in Great Britain & Ireland are aligned with the sunrise at the time of Samhain. It is mentioned in the earliest Irish literature, from the 9th century & is associated with many important events in Irish mythology.
The early literature says great gatherings & feasts marked Samhain when the ancient burial mounds were open, which were seen as portals to the Otherworld. Some of the literature also associates Samhain with bonfires & sacrifices.
• According to Irish mythology, Samhain (like Beltane) was a time when the 'doorways' to the Otherworld opened, allowing supernatural beings and the souls of the dead to come into our world; while Beltane was a summer festival for the living, Samhain "was essentially a festival for the dead".
•The festival was not recorded in detail until the early modern era. It was when cattle were brought down from the summer pastures & livestock were slaughtered. Special bonfires were lit, which were deemed to have protective & cleansing powers.
At Samhain, the aos sí were appeased with offerings of food & drink to ensure the people & livestock survived the winter. The souls of dead kin were also thought to revisit their homes seeking hospitality & a place was set at the table for them during a meal. Divination was also a big part of the festival & often involved nuts & apples.
Mumming & guising were part of the festival from at least the early modern era, whereby people went door-to-door in costume, reciting verses in exchange for food. The costumes may have been a way of imitating & disguising oneself from the aos sí.
• In the late 19th century, John Rhys and James Frazer suggested it had been the "Celtic New Year", but that is disputed.
Some believe it is the time of The Goddess' mourning the death of The God until his rebirth at Yule. The Goddess' sadness can be seen in the shortening, darkening days & the arrival or cold weather.
Related festivals:
• Halloween( October 31st)-
In popular culture, the day has become a celebration of horror, being associated with the macabre and supernatural.
•One theory holds that many Halloween traditions were influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, which are believed to have pagan roots. Some go further & suggest that Samhain may have been Christianized as All Hallow's Day, along with its eve, by the early Church. Other academics believe Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, being the vigil of All Hallow's Day.
Popular Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising & ghouling), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins or turnips into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, & watching horror or Halloween-themed films
• Day of the Dead(November 1st-2nd)-
el Día de Muertos or el Día de los Muertos
The multi-day holiday involves family & friends gathering to pay respects & to remember friends & family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember amusing events & anecdotes about the departed. It is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed, and is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.
•The observance falls during the Christian period of Allhallowtide.
Traditions connected with the holiday include honoring the deceased using calaveras & marigold flowers known as cempazúchitl, building home altars called ofrendas with the favorite foods & beverages of the departed & visiting graves with these items as gifts for the deceased.
The celebration is not solely focused on the dead, as it is also common to give gifts to friends such as candy sugar skulls, to share traditional pan de muerto with family & friends, & to write light-hearted & often irreverent verses in the form of mock epitaphs dedicated to living friends & acquaintances, a literary form known as calaveras literarias.
Some argue that there are Indigenous Mexican or ancient Aztec influences that account for the custom & it has become a way to remember those forebears of Mexican culture.
• All Saint's Day(November 1st)-
Also known as All Hallows' Day or the Feast of All Saints is a Christian solemnity celebrated in honour of all the saints of the Church, whether they are known or unknown.

Real innovation vs Silicon Valley nonsense
This is the LAST DAY to get my bestselling solarpunk utopian novel THE LOST CAUSE (2023) as a $2.99, DRM-free ebook!
If there was any area where we needed a lot of "innovation," it's in climate tech. We've already blown through numerous points-of-no-return for a habitable Earth, and the pace is accelerating.
Silicon Valley claims to be the epicenter of American innovation, but what passes for innovation in Silicon Valley is some combination of nonsense, climate-wrecking tech, and climate-wrecking nonsense tech. Forget Jeff Hammerbacher's lament about "the best minds of my generation thinking about how to make people click ads." Today's best-paid, best-trained technologists are enlisted to making boobytrapped IoT gadgets:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/05/24/record-scratch/#autoenshittification
Planet-destroying cryptocurrency scams:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/15/your-new-first-name/#that-dagger-tho
NFT frauds:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/02/06/crypto-copyright-%f0%9f%a4%a1%f0%9f%92%a9/
Or planet-destroying AI frauds:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/29/pay-no-attention/#to-the-little-man-behind-the-curtain
If that was the best "innovation" the human race had to offer, we'd be fucking doomed.
But – as Ryan Cooper writes for The American Prospect – there's a far more dynamic, consequential, useful and exciting innovation revolution underway, thanks to muscular public spending on climate tech:
https://prospect.org/environment/2024-05-30-green-energy-revolution-real-innovation/
The green energy revolution – funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, the Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS Act and the Science Act – is accomplishing amazing feats, which are barely registering amid the clamor of AI nonsense and other hype. I did an interview a while ago about my climate novel The Lost Cause and the interviewer wanted to know what role AI would play in resolving the climate emergency. I was momentarily speechless, then I said, "Well, I guess maybe all the energy used to train and operate models could make it much worse? What role do you think it could play?" The interviewer had no answer.
Here's brief tour of the revolution:
2023 saw 32GW of new solar energy come online in the USA (up 50% from 2022);
Wind increased from 118GW to 141GW;
Grid-scale batteries doubled in 2023 and will double again in 2024;
EV sales increased from 20,000 to 90,000/month.
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/blog/2023/12/19/building-a-thriving-clean-energy-economy-in-2023-and-beyond/
The cost of clean energy is plummeting, and that's triggering other areas of innovation, like using "hot rocks" to replace fossil fuel heat (25% of overall US energy consumption):
https://rondo.com/products
Increasing our access to cheap, clean energy will require a lot of materials, and material production is very carbon intensive. Luckily, the existing supply of cheap, clean energy is fueling "green steel" production experiments:
https://www.wdam.com/2024/03/25/americas-1st-green-steel-plant-coming-perry-county-1b-federal-investment/
Cheap, clean energy also makes it possible to recover valuable minerals from aluminum production tailings, a process that doubles as site-remediation:
https://interestingengineering.com/innovation/toxic-red-mud-co2-free-iron
And while all this electrification is going to require grid upgrades, there's lots we can do with our existing grid, like power-line automation that increases capacity by 40%:
https://www.npr.org/2023/08/13/1187620367/power-grid-enhancing-technologies-climate-change
It's also going to require a lot of storage, which is why it's so exciting that we're figuring out how to turn decommissioned mines into giant batteries. During the day, excess renewable energy is channeled into raising rock-laden platforms to the top of the mine-shafts, and at night, these unspool, releasing energy that's fed into the high-availability power-lines that are already present at every mine-site:
https://www.euronews.com/green/2024/02/06/this-disused-mine-in-finland-is-being-turned-into-a-gravity-battery-to-store-renewable-ene
Why are we paying so much attention to Silicon Valley pump-and-dumps and ignoring all this incredible, potentially planet-saving, real innovation? Cooper cites a plausible explanation from the Apperceptive newsletter:
https://buttondown.email/apperceptive/archive/destructive-investing-and-the-siren-song-of/
Silicon Valley is the land of low-capital, low-labor growth. Software development requires fewer people than infrastructure and hard goods manufacturing, both to get started and to run as an ongoing operation. Silicon Valley is the place where you get rich without creating jobs. It's run by investors who hate the idea of paying people. That's why AI is so exciting for Silicon Valley types: it lets them fantasize about making humans obsolete. A company without employees is a company without labor issues, without messy co-determination fights, without any moral consideration for others. It's the natural progression for an industry that started by misclassifying the workers in its buildings as "contractors," and then graduated to pretending that millions of workers were actually "independent small businesses."
It's also the natural next step for an industry that hates workers so much that it will pretend that their work is being done by robots, and then outsource the labor itself to distant Indian call-centers (no wonder Indian techies joke that "AI" stands for "absent Indians"):
https://pluralistic.net/2024/05/17/fake-it-until-you-dont-make-it/#twenty-one-seconds
Contrast this with climate tech: this is a profoundly physical kind of technology. It is labor intensive. It is skilled. The workers who perform it have power, both because they are so far from their employers' direct oversight and because these fed-funded sectors are more likely to be unionized than Silicon Valley shops. Moreover, climate tech is capital intensive. All of those workers are out there moving stuff around: solar panels, wires, batteries.
Climate tech is infrastructural. As Deb Chachra writes in her must-read 2023 book How Infrastructure Works, infrastructure is a gift we give to our descendants. Infrastructure projects rarely pay for themselves during the lives of the people who decide to build them:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/10/17/care-work/#charismatic-megaprojects
Climate tech also produces gigantic, diffused, uncapturable benefits. The "social cost of carbon" is a measure that seeks to capture how much we all pay as polluters despoil our shared world. It includes the direct health impacts of burning fossil fuels, and the indirect costs of wildfires and extreme weather events. The "social savings" of climate tech are massive:
https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/05/climate-and-health-benefits-of-wind-and-solar-dwarf-all-subsidies/
For every MWh of renewable power produced, we save $100 in social carbon costs. That's $100 worth of people not sickening and dying from pollution, $100 worth of homes and habitats not burning down or disappearing under floodwaters. All told, US renewables have delivered $250,000,000,000 (one quarter of one trillion dollars) in social carbon savings over the past four years:
https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/05/climate-and-health-benefits-of-wind-and-solar-dwarf-all-subsidies/
In other words, climate tech is unselfish tech. It's a gift to the future and to the broad public. It shares its spoils with workers. It requires public action. By contrast, Silicon Valley is greedy tech that is relentlessly focused on the shortest-term returns that can be extracted with the least share going to labor. It also requires massive public investment, but it also totally committed to giving as little back to the public as is possible.
No wonder America's richest and most powerful people are lining up to endorse and fund Trump:
https://prospect.org/blogs-and-newsletters/tap/2024-05-30-democracy-deshmocracy-mega-financiers-flocking-to-trump/
Silicon Valley epitomizes Stafford Beer's motto that "the purpose of a system is what it does." If Silicon Valley produces nothing but planet-wrecking nonsense, grifty scams, and planet-wrecking, nonsensical scams, then these are all features of the tech sector, not bugs.
As Anil Dash writes:
Driving change requires us to make the machine want something else. If the purpose of a system is what it does, and we don’t like what it does, then we have to change the system.
https://www.anildash.com/2024/05/29/systems-the-purpose-of-a-system/
To give climate tech the attention, excitement, and political will it deserves, we need to recalibrate our understanding of the world. We need to have object permanence. We need to remember just how few people were actually using cryptocurrency during the bubble and apply that understanding to AI hype. Only 2% of Britons surveyed in a recent study use AI tools:
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c511x4g7x7jo
If we want our tech companies to do good, we have to understand that their ground state is to create planet-wrecking nonsense, grifty scams, and planet-wrecking, nonsensical scams. We need to make these companies small enough to fail, small enough to jail, and small enough to care:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/04/teach-me-how-to-shruggie/#kagi
We need to hold companies responsible, and we need to change the microeconomics of the board room, to make it easier for tech workers who want to do good to shout down the scammers, nonsense-peddlers and grifters:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/28/microincentives-and-enshittification/
Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that the FTC could hold Amazon executives personally liable for the decision to trick people into signing up for Prime, and for making the unsubscribe-from-Prime process into a Kafka-as-a-service nightmare:
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/05/amazon-execs-may-be-personally-liable-for-tricking-users-into-prime-sign-ups/
Imagine how powerful a precedent this could set. The Amazon employees who vociferously objected to their bosses' decision to make Prime as confusing as possible could have raised the objection that doing this could end up personally costing those bosses millions of dollars in fines:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/03/big-tech-cant-stop-telling-on-itself/
We need to make climate tech, not Big Tech, the center of our scrutiny and will. The climate emergency is so terrifying as to be nearly unponderable. Science fiction writers are increasingly being called upon to try to frame this incomprehensible risk in human terms. SF writer (and biologist) Peter Watts's conversation with evolutionary biologist Dan Brooks is an eye-opener:
https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/the-collapse-is-coming-will-humanity-adapt/
They draw a distinction between "sustainability" meaning "what kind of technological fixes can we come up with that will allow us to continue to do business as usual without paying a penalty for it?" and sustainability meaning, "what changes in behavior will allow us to save ourselves with the technology that is possible?"
Writing about the Watts/Brooks dialog for Naked Capitalism, Yves Smith invokes William Gibson's The Peripheral:
With everything stumbling deeper into a ditch of shit, history itself become a slaughterhouse, science had started popping. Not all at once, no one big heroic thing, but there were cleaner, cheaper energy sources, more effective ways to get carbon out of the air, new drugs that did what antibiotics had done before…. Ways to print food that required much less in the way of actual food to begin with. So everything, however deeply fucked in general, was lit increasingly by the new, by things that made people blink and sit up, but then the rest of it would just go on, deeper into the ditch. A progress accompanied by constant violence, he said, by sufferings unimaginable.
https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2024/05/preparing-for-collapse-why-the-focus-on-climate-energy-sustainability-is-destructive.html
Gibson doesn't think this is likely, mind, and even if it's attainable, it will come amidst "unimaginable suffering."
But the universe of possible technologies is quite large. As Chachra points out in How Infrastructure Works, we could give every person on Earth a Canadian's energy budget (like an American's, but colder), by capturing a mere 0.4% of the solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface every day. Doing this will require heroic amounts of material and labor, especially if we're going to do it without destroying the planet through material extraction and manufacturing.
These are the questions that we should be concerning ourselves with: what behavioral changes will allow us to realize cheap, abundant, green energy? What "innovations" will our society need to focus on the things we need, rather than the scams and nonsense that creates Silicon Valley fortunes?
How can we use planning, and solidarity, and codetermination to usher in the kind of tech that makes it possible for us to get through the climate bottleneck with as little death and destruction as possible? How can we use enforcement, discernment, and labor rights to thwart the enshittificatory impulses of Silicon Valley's biggest assholes?

a little list of canon evidence supporting most elriel theories <3
1. elain and the possibility of her training to be a spy
Elain pushed, “We keep it secret—we send the servants away. (...) No one will know.”
My sister Elain can convince anyone to do anything with a few smiles.
She (feyre) nodded toward Azriel. “I think she’s (elain) got you beat for secret-keeping."
It made sense, I supposed, that Azriel alone had listened to her. The male who heard things others could not … Perhaps he, too, had suffered as Elain had before he understood the gift he possessed.
Elain spoke from the doorway, having appeared so silently that they all twisted toward her, “Using me.” She scanned Elain from head to toe, wondering if she’d been taking lessons in stealth either from Azriel or the two half-wraiths she called friends.
Elain stepped out of a shadow behind him, and rammed Truth-Teller to the hilt through the back of the king’s neck as she snarled in his ear, “Don’t you touch my sister.”
2. elain wearing azriel's color (cobalt blue)
Elain rasped, “Nice to meet you,” before hustling after her, the silk skirts of her cobalt dress whispering over the parquet floor. ... She’d (elain) covered her nightgown with a silk shawl of palest blue, her fingers grappling into the fabric as she held herself. ... Elain seemed to realize it, too. She peered down at herself, at the simple blue gown she wore. ... But Elain wrapped her own blue cloak around herself, ... “Is your father healing?” I added the cobalt of Azriel’s Siphons to the orange and mixed until a rich brown appeared. ... Azriel’s Siphons flashed, a sprawling shield of cobalt locking over Rhysand’s, his breathing just as heavy as my mate’s ... Az held Cassian’s stare for a moment, cobalt Siphons flickering, and then nodded.
3. elain's mating bond to lucien might be wrong
when elain was turned and mated:
Faster than any of us could see, Jurian fired a hidden ash bolt through Azriel’s chest. The ash bolt was coated in bloodbane that the King of Hybern claimed flowed where he willed it. ... “Put the prettier one in first,” the king said, Mor already forgotten. I twisted—only to have the king’s guards grab me from behind. Rhys was instantly there, but Azriel shouted, back arching as the king’s poison worked its way in. (I didn't leave out any lines between these two paragraphs... so why did the poison sink deeper into az when the king says to put elain into the cauldron???)
azriel's mate behaviour to elain:
Azriel smiled faintly. ‘Would you like me to show you the garden?’ But Elain did not balk from him, did not shy away as she nodded—just once. ... Elain sat silently at one of the wrought-iron tables, a cup of tea before her. Azriel was sprawled on the chaise longue across the gray stones, sunning his wings and reading what looked to be a stack of reports ... The two Illyrians paused their inspection of me long enough to note my sisters finishing up breakfast, Nesta in a pale gray gown that brought out the steel in her eyes, Elain in dusty pink. Both males went a bit still.” ... ‘Can I set you up in the garden? The herbs you planted are coming in nicely.’ ‘I can help her,’ said Azriel, stepping to the table as Elain silently rose. No shadows at his ear, no darkness ringing from his fingers as he extended a hand.” ... The ancient healer jerked her chin toward Lucien. “See what he can do. If anyone can sense if something is amiss, it’s a mate. The mating bond. It is a bridge between souls.” She pointed at Lucien as she saw herself out. “Try sitting down with her. Just talking—sensing. See what you pick up. But don’t push.” (what we see azriel do time and again) “She doesn’t need anything,” Azriel answered without so much as looking at Lucien. Elain was staring at the spymaster now—unblinkingly. “We’re the ones who need ...” Azriel trailed off. “A seer,” he said, more to himself than us. “The Cauldron made you a seer.” ... “Because of the shit with Elain?” Azriel stilled. “What happened to Elain?”
the description of feysand:
But the bond, the bridge between us... it was a howling void.
the description of elriel:
The only bridge of connection ... that knife.
the description of elucien:
“It felt ... strange,” Elain breathed. “Like you pulled on a thread tied to a rib.”
finally:
‘There is choice. And sometimes, yes—the bond picks poorly sometimes the bond is nothing more than some…preordained guesswork at who will provide the strongest offspring. At its basest level, it’s perhaps only that.’”
4. azriel's shadows DO like elain:
In the blinding sun off the turquoise water, his shadows were gone, his face stark and clear. More ... human than I had ever seen him. ... “What now?” Elain mused, at last answering my question from moments ago as her attention drifted to the windows facing the sunny street. That smile grew, bright enough that it lit up even Azriel’s shadows across the room. ... Nesta saw the blow land, like a physical impact, in Elain’s face, her posture. No one spoke, though shadows gathered in the corners of the room, like snakes preparing to strike. ... But tonight, here in the dark and quiet, with no one to see…He pulled the small velvet box from the shadows around him. Opened it for her.
5. elriel's aesthetic as light and dark
I saw the painting in my mind: the lovely fawn, blooming spring vibrant behind her. Standing before Death, shadows and terrors lurking over his shoulder. Light and dark, the space between their bodies a blend of the two. The only bridge of connection ... that knife.
if y'all want any more cold hard canon to back up any other elriel theories/arguments/takes comment it on this post and I'll add it to the list LMAO
good day and good night y'all stay safe our there<33

colony culture is obviously really variable as cultures are but in the main character colony, their practices are strongly influenced by the characteristics of the adult dragon who's been living in the cave for a century. the dragon is large enough that it poses a threat to all else around it - you'd hardly move aside for a line of ants if they happened to be under your boot, and the dragon feels the same for the kobolds. as such the colony has had to construct additional defences to separate themselves from the grand chamber in which the dragon lives. There is a set of massive iron and steel doors, constructed from the leftover armour and weapons of would-be dragon slayers, and beyond these doors are the main warrens, a series of tunnels which make up the residential district. But these tunnels are finite and do not expand, made of very hard stone, so the colony also has a two-tier class structure wherein everyone whose ancestor managed to get a spot in the warrens gets to enjoy safety and security behind the iron doors, while a good half of the population lives in the grand cavern, at the mercy of the dragon and whatever else lives within the caves. having invented classism they proceeded to retroactively invent reasons why someone should deserve to live outside the doors; the crimes of their ancestors, their generally poor character, their unhygienic and scavenging lifestyle. People don't like to think it was random chance that separates them from the people outside the doors.
(cut for length)
There's no fire inside the caves. Ventilation is already poor, and reliant on the ice-caps of the mountain range remaining frozen (i.e those air holes would flood if the glaciers melted). Smoke and fire are dangerous, as are midden heaps, large rotting corpses, or anything else that might produce an excess of unbreathable air. The warrens especially forbid fire, relying solely on proximity to the dragon for warmth, and bioluminescent cave fauna for light. Food is uncooked or served frozen, mainly consisting of blind fish and other aquatic subterranean animals.
The concept of time is rudimentary. There's no night or day, no minute or hour. It's very difficult to convey how long ago something happened without linking it to a notable event that happened at the same time.
Outside the warrens, scavengers follow the dragon's lead - what's yours is mine. Theft is 100% acceptable so long as you're not physically taking an item out of someone's hands while they're using it. To keep a hold on precious belongings, scavengers hoard their things in remote corners of the cave system, far from society. If a hoard is found, it's fair game. But finding it is the challenge. It's accepted that everyone probably has a secret stash somewhere. The stashes usually contain items taken for their aesthetic value from dead dragonhunters, alongside curiosities from the cave itself; strange bones, crystals, mummified animals. A hoard is shared between partners, so collecting nice things is also an act of devotion and commitment.
Scavengers are broken up into broad groupings based on skill. They might work as hunters, fishers, explorers, or navigators, given their advanced knowledge of the cave system granted by having to find a good hoard spot. But they can also be outrunners, the only group of kobolds who regularly leave the cave. Outrunners are the ones bringing back evidence of plants, animals, and concepts from the outside. They may post sentries to warn of an impending dragon hunt, or sneak down to nearby human settlements to steal livestock.
The highest ranking group of scavengers, more important than any other, is the dragoneer group. They are chosen purely based on colour. If you are any variation of black and red, you can be a dragoneer. This is because the dragon's scales are black and red, and a suitably coloured dragoneer can blend in while scavenging on its body. They take scales to be used as blades and shields, shed spines for weapons, and harvest blood from the dragon by farming ticks and lice. Dragon blood is a vitally important nutrient source for the kobolds, usually consumed watered down. In concentrated form it is consumed for ritualistic purposes, the 'quickening agent' used by the mother of matriarchs to imbue her offspring with the ability to commune and share dreams with the dragon. Realistically, the high levels of heavy metals make the concentrated blood unsafe for a pregnant person to drink.
