Hear me out! Chief!Katara x Ambassador!Zuko

I'm sure it's already been done before, but imagine an AU where Iroh dies and Lu Ten lives and becomes Fire Lord. Lu Ten's experiences during the war and his father's death give him a different outlook on his country and his family. He becomes Fire Lord after Sozin's death and decides to change things for the better.

(This would include him stepping up for Zuko and Azula. I like to imagine he's a huge dork who's constantly getting bullied by them. Idk what would happen with Ozai and Ursa here, but I like to think Ozai is just a hermit loser who pulls away from all of them including Azula which allows Ursa to start getting through to her fully in a way she couldn't before. Somewhat mentally stable Azula ftw)

Anyway, because of Lu Ten's change of heart, he decides to start with reparations in the Southern Water Tribe and Earth Kingdom villages. For the Southern Water Tribe, this allows for infrastructure developments which means easier contact with the Northern Tribe as well as rebuilding.

Hakoda brings his kids to the Southern Water Tribe for their first point of contact in decades and Sokka is immediately smitten with Princess Yue. She's been betrothed already, but Hakoda (with his feminist icon mother Kanna we stan) gently dissuades the NWT chief from forcing his literal child into marriage.

(And oops! He accidentally started a feminist revolution in the north. Well, it was a combination of that and tiny Katara proudly going around and telling the NWT women about the brave female members of their tribe that fought and lost their lives in the war. You know that meme about how Kanna sent Katara to kick Pakku's ass? Here, it's more like she sent little Katara to cause an uprising to the point where it was either he starts teaching everyone who wants to learn or they all boycott. In short, Pakku becomes the first person in the ATLA to get his ass cancelled)

Anyway! Sokka and Yue get married somewhere down the line as adults. But since she's the only NWT heir it means he has to rule with her in the North. And since Katara is the only remaining SWT heir, she becomes chief. Under Chief Katara's rule, the SWT proposers. And once a certain escaped prisoner comes back after the war ends, Katara becomes powerful too.

Zuko takes an interest in learning about other cultures. For so long, he was told that the Fire Nation was the superior nation and that they were doing the right thing by enforcing their rule on the other nations. With Lu Ten's reform, he's become curious as to what made his cousin change his mind. So Lu Ten decides to take him with him on diplomatic visits. Zuko experiences and learns what makes the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes different, but also great.

Once he visits the SWT he's immediately enthralled by its compassionate, brave, and powerful leader. Although, Katara isn't particularly impressed with the bumbling ambassador who can't seem to form words around her.

Zutara AUs are so fun that not even I can resist them. I like this because it's a cute reversal on Fire Lord Zuko x Diplomat Katara

So much to love!!! Lu Ten the Loser Lord! Kanna the feminist icon weaponizing her granddaughter to cancel Pakku! Hama living in the SWT (can we have bodyguard Hama??? I’ve been thinking about General Hama in @lykegenia’s The Things We Hide like, once a month, ever since I read it back in March and I think bodyguard Hama is a great variation…you’re never too old to girlboss). Yuekka ruling the NWT! ZUKO BEING A DUMBASS AROUND CHIEF KATARA PLEASE!

I think Ambassador Zuko is the funniest idea ever for like, many many reasons, but the funniest thing to me is how in this AU Lu Ten would need to choose nepo baby Zuko or nepo baby Azula as the diplomat and both are…kinda bad? Zuko would genuinely want to learn to be diplomatic but it does not come easily to him and he would start international diplomatic crises by accident, while Azula does understand diplomacy as a skill but arguably too well and would start international diplomatic crises on purpose.

anyway yes Zuko would absolutely lose all faculties of speech and possibly thinking once he encounters Katara, who is so passionate and thoughtful and devoted to justice! And she’d be like “who’s that Fire Nation idiot who can’t even string three words together? Doesn’t he know reparations are serious business??” And the people from the other nations would be confused because they’re like, Ambassador Zuko is really fair and actually a pretty smart guy what are you on about? THEN maybe she’d think he was doing it on purpose to undermine her…sorry I have to insert a classic misunderstanding somewhere…

ANYWAY if anyone has fic recs for Ambassador Zuko and Chief Katara PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I haven’t read any new Zutara fics in months because my autism compass changed direction, but new year new me etc

Jujutsu kaisen x Alta au (unfinished)

Aang - Yuuta. I think they share similar traits, plus their original stories are kinda similar!

Katara - Maki. Again a pretty obvious choice considering both Maki’s and Katara’s personalities and even sharing the struggle of defying misogynistic elders.

Sokka - Yuji. These two both share the comedic relief role! And their personalities also match.

Suki/Toph - Nobara. I genuinely couldn’t think of someone to cover toph (I wanted ages to match) so I’m having nobara do a 2-for-1. I really feel like she covers both here.

Zuko - Megumi. Omg who could have thought that the emo kid with the sad backstory matched up with the emo kid with the sad backstory!! What a mystery!!!

Fire fam

Ozai - Zenin clan. I’m gonna explain this more in depth in my storyline notes , but yeah evil zenin clan… who could have guessed

Ursa - Mamaguro. Obvious, considering both stories. I might go more in depth on the whole Toji situation in storyline notes.

Iroh - Gojo. Deeply cares for Megumi and wants him to go on the right path? Perfect I say

Azula - Sukuna.. maybe…

Ty-lee - Tsumiki. Similar personalities but little age difference we can fix!

Mai - Mai. I will explain how this happens, since I’m keeping Mai and Maki as twins.

Storyline Notes

Sokka x Suki doesn’t happen because nobara and yuji are sibling goals.

Mai x Zuko doesn’t happen because they are related in cannon (jjk), and it’s weird to swap that around you know?

Zenin clan is taking the place of ozai, so they favor whoever Azula is gonna be, Megumi speaks out at the meeting and gets challenged to an agni kai, loses to his dad (Toji, but still working out how it’s gonna work) and gets sent out to find the avatar. Gojo/Geto (still deciding) join him on his journey.

Megumi and Tsumiki are not gonna grow up together

Maki and Yuji grow up together, not related though.

Maki and Mai are still twins! but during a fire raid when they were around 5 years old, Mai gets kidnapped for being a water-bender. Mai resents Maki for not ever coming for her. Causing her to fake it as a non-bender in the fire kingdom. Gojo takes her into his care, not too long after taking Megumi into his care.

Maki and Mai have no relation to the Zenin clan.

More on the Toji situation, Toji would be very mistreated my the Zenin clan, leaving and falling in love with mamaguro. When Megumi is 4 years old the Zenin clan kidnap Megumi and kill mamaguro. This deeply hurts Toji so he returns to how he was before mamaguro. Gojo, being ordered by the Zenin clan to go after Toji for his crimes. Gojo kills Toji, and Toji asks him to watch over Megumi. Gojo makes his wish and 2 years later is officially megumi’s guardian. (The reason Gojo is ordered by the Zenin clan is unknown, and the reason Gojo knew about Megumi was because there were rumors of him being a firebender.)

This is mostly a rough draft to get my thoughts on digital paper.. if I work out some of the kinks I might make a fic. If anyone has any ideas let me know!!

Then the Gaang have to go find ursa to see if it’s true while Iroh has to take up the mantle of FL for a bit because of the aforementioned issue of Zuko maybe not being or royal blood.

fun. x ATLA

Idk if anyone else in the fandom listens to fun., but I'm a big fan of pretty much the whole Some Nights album. I was listening to it last week (yes, even the Some Nights - Intro, which I don't vibe with) because it was speaking to me in terms of ATLA characters (certain songs reminded me of certain characters).

"But Turtle, Nate Reuss wasn't focused on ATLA when he was writing this album"

Ok, and? I'm gonna have some fun with this!

So here's each song and the character I think it fits (not all are exact fits & not every song is included, but most are)

1. Some Nights - Sokka

"This is it, boys, this is war/what are we waiting for?" feels very Sokka to me, especially since he considers himself a warrior and is the protector of Wolf Cove after Hakoda and the other men leave to fight the fire nation. Also "I still see your ghost" could reference Kya, but more likely Yue, since Sokka says that he sees Katara's face when he tries to remember his mother. The line about the martyr reminded me of Suki. Ok also the "miss my mom and dad for this" line?? Come on. Ok BUT "my heart is breaking for my sister and the con she called love/and then I look into my nephew's eyes" is just SCREAMING a Zutara or Kataang fic of some sort. Come on, right?? It's just begging to be written. Overall, this is very existential crisis-Sokka to me.

2. We Are Young - Katara

Ok so I wasn't fully sure what song to give Katara and it just didn't feel right to leave her out so I deadass just gave her this one like 5 minutes ago, but it still works. It would also be AU-based, but hear me out. I'm assuming y'all are most likely to know this song out of all of them. So Katara's at a bar after breaking up with her boyfriend (Aang) and the Gaang's all here. "My seat's been taken by some sunglasses askin' bout a scar" would be Zuko asking about the scars on Katara's hands that she couldn't fully heal after Aang's firebending accident. "But between the drinks and subtle things/the holes in my apologies/you know I'm trying hard to take it back" feels very Aang to me, especially since he's immature. Then right after, I feel like it switches to a more Zutara vibe for most of the song. Also "the moon is on my side/I have no reason to run" with Katara is such a sick combo omg.

3. Carry On - Zuko

The lyrics are very angsty. "You swore and said we are not/we are not shining stars/this I know, I never said we are" feels like a very Zuko & Iroh interaction to me. And also "though I've never been through hell like that/I've closed enough windows to know you can never look back" !!!! Like that feels very Season 3 Zuko to me. Also, no matter what, Zuko is forced to carry on, whether it's with Ozai, Azula, the Gaang... Although don't get me wrong, Zuko does take back his destiny, but I'm referring more to how he can't give up. Also Ursa tells Zuko and he later says how he struggles and fights, even though it's hard. "And we talked and talked about how our parents will die/all our neighbors and wives" Zuko is very familiar with the concept of mortality, he nearly died and he loses his mother at a young age. I'm sure he worries about when Iroh will die, as well as his friends. I feel like Zuko has a line about people leaving him, but I can't find it. Ok next point "and it's nice to know when I was left for dead/I was found and now I don't roam these streets/I am not the ghost you are to me" is very reminiscent of Zuko's relationship (or lack thereof) with Ozai. Also "may your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground" feels like a very Iroh line. Last point, "on our darkest day, when we're miles away/so we'll come and we'll find our way home" is very reminiscent of Zuko's redemption arc and how he returns home and retakes his place in the line of succession and becomes Fire Lord.

4. It Gets Better - Katara?

Honestly the "yes, I know it hurts at first/but it gets better" reminds me a lot of Katara. I also liked the line about fire in the sky and snow on the ground. Not too much else to say.

5. All Alone - Mai

I really encourage you guys to listen to this song, it was really interesting. The lyrics reminded me of Maiko, especially how Mai seems to not care about anything. The girl's voice reminded me a lot of Mai throughout the series, especially her interactions with Zuko. "I gave her to you/I don't need a toy/I thought you might appreciate it/I don't like the way it moves" reminds me of their interaction when Zuko tries to give Mai the shell on Ember Island. "How do you cry with inanimate eyes/you're never gonna smile/with the way that you're wired" also reminded me a lot of Mai's character throughout the series.

(I really like All Alright, but wasn't sure who it would fit well with)

6. One Foot - Toph

"I put one foot in front of the other" is very Toph, she is a fighter first and foremost. "I don't need a new love or a new life" also feels very her, Toph doesn't care as much about the more material things compared to the rest of the Gaang. I'm sure there's more that can be said about this connection, but I didn't really vibe with the song so much. Sorry Toph.

7. Out on the Town - Aang

Okay, Aang fans, I'm asking you to stick with me here. "Cause I know I'll never take the time/to unpack my missteps and call all of our friends" feels very much like season 3 Aang, where he doesn't face consequences for his actions and Bryke kinda places him on this pedestal of sorts. Also, this is a kataang breakup song to me. The chorus really feels like Aang to me, putting his feelings before those of other people, causing a scene, there being consequences (that he somehow gets out of, but that's not today's discussion). "But I'm waiting for the day you come back and say/'hey maybe I should change my mind'" reminds me of the first 2 times Aang kisses Katara and how he expects her to change her mind on how she feels about him. Also the repetition of "open up your heart".

Overall, I found the entire album to be very Zuko-coded.

ok i'll expand on the second one.

It's a La Demoiselle d'Avignon x ATLA fic. Modern AU, no firebending, Zutara.

By all appearances it's the perfect crossover.

Katara and Koba both are the eldest daughter but second child of their family, both have a widowed grandparent and are royalties. If you kill Hakoda off, they even have the exact same family situation, granddaughters but not expected to reign of the current water tribe ruler. They have an excentric older brother who's supposed to inherit the throne, and both have a strong connection to healing (waterbending and studied in Uni to become a medic).

Then you take Zuko. Son of an old and respected family, upper class, completely normal person to have a job as an ambassador in a modern au. He comes for the holidays to his mother's, his father died (and the only moment his father is mentioned is when he says his father taught him how to make tea. i aint saying Past Ursa/Iroh but i am saying it) a while ago. He has two ex-girlfriends who made it in life, one in politics, one with her business, who you can cast either as Mai and Jin if you're a purist of Zuko's heart, or as Mai and Ty Lee because the one "with the business" literally manages a ballet company and Ty Le would fit the role perfectly.

EVERYTHING works perfectly.

Except. For one small fact.

Which is that an iceland-inspired country and France (in the original) don't have the same baggage as Fire Nation and Water Tribe.

And I know I'm making it happen in a world where there was no 100 years war, no air nomad genocide, no Southern Raiders.

But still, there are a few things that would sound very different in either cases.

Original: This french girl married a guy from Iceland-Inspired country, so to make her happy the land adopted french as a second official language, yay!

ATLA version: Somehow the Water Tribe has Fire Nation Speech as their second language because *checks notes* a fire nation girl married into the royal family centuries prior and they adopted her language to "make her happy". Yeah. Right. What are you trying to hide from us?

Original: the french ambassador needed something to yell as a sort of war cry before doing something very daring, he said "long live france". Sure. Makes sense.

Atla version: the fire nation ambassador yelled "long live the fire nation" in the middle of the water tribe royal palace. Hmm. That's uh... interesting. Go on.

I would def write it without changing much from the original but i'm just a bit scared of the like... subtext that could be there, and also i know the odds of someone reading it are low given how many people read my other fics from the same series but what if it becomes popular and people are being Not NormalTM about the subtext?

Mostly I like this au because usra actually gets a descent husband that she can grow to love. Zuko and Azula can grow up with a loving father. Also if lu ten never dies, god the fire nation would have probably won. I have headcanons the ozai probably had lu ten killed. This au is adorable. I visions in my head of lu ten being a good big brother with kid zuko and toddler azula

I think I’d like to see this AU if there’s no War. Because no one wants to actually see the Fire Nation win, you know? So I don’t know, maybe Lu Ten and Iroh get ambushed while on a diplomatic trip (maybe in the Earth Kingdom, we could bring in Jet somehow?) and Ozai takes this opportunity to strike. So instead of Sozin’s War, it could be Ozai who decides to create his own war.

Lu Ten being a big brother to Zuko and Azula sounds adorable!! I love that idea. We could also bring in Zutara (because I can’t help myself) with a No Hundred Year War AU. Katara, as the daughter of Chief Hakoda and Chieftess Kya, could be brought with her brother Sokka to the court. Could you imagine the diplomatic meetings between Iroh x Ursa and Hakoda x Kya?? That would be amazing!! 

Lu Ten’s death would be EVEN MORE devastating then :(

Izumi got more hurt on purpose. she was stalling and ready to die so they wouldn't hurt Ursa

after Ursa loses her right eye, she starts having problems with her depth perception, thing that leads her to be constantly hitting herself against stuff (the door frames, tables, chairs... etc) and every time becomes more and more frustrating and more distressing bc things will never be like they used to be

Iroh spend several nights sleeping on the same room as Izumi, when she was unconscious and he'd cry, apologizing, for not being able to help

when Izumi wakes up the first thing she does is tearfully ask Lin where and how is Ursa doing

summary: Every Fire Nation citizen gets a tattoo on their wrist when they turn sixteen. This tattoo shows the first words your soulmate will say to you. Some people find this person immediately, and spend the rest of their lives together. Some people never get the chance.

"Why do you keep that ribbon on your wrist?"

Zuko clenched his fists by his sides, exhaling a breath of fire in frustration. Sozin's Comet was in three days, and this was the fourth time Aang has stopped training to ask a question that had nothing to do with firebending.

"Aang," Zuko said impatiently, "Stop avoiding training."

"But I want to know!" Aang clasped his hands together. "That's where your soulmate's first words are, right? Why are they covered?"

Zuko groaned. "Because I don't have time for a soulmate. I was too focused on finding you, and now I need to focus on defeating my father."

"So you've never looked at it!?" Aang's eyes widened before he lunged forward. "Let me see! Let me see!"

"Wha- Aang!" Zuko yelled, trying to pry the airbender off of him as he stretched his right arm out of his reach. "Get off!"

"I want to know what your words are!"

"Why are you interested in my love life!?"

"Because I would kill to have what you have and you don't appreciate it!"

"Don't appreciate what?" Sokka asked, popping a grape into his mouth as he walked up to the hill where the two were sparring.

"Sokka!" Aang shouted. "Take Zuko's ribbon off!"

"Ooh, I love annoying Zuko!" Sokka said gleefully, grabbing Zuko's wrist and ripping the black fabric off. "Uh, why am I annoying Zuko?"

"Because Zuko's never looked at his soulmate tattoo!" Aang snatched a frozen Zuko's wrist and read it. "I want the last thing I see to be the moon," he read.

"Poetic." Sokka nodded approvingly. "I like them already, they like staring at my first girlfriend!"

Zuko blinked. "Wait, hold on- your first girlfriend actually turned into the moon? Like literally?"

That was a year ago. Zuko was Fire Lord now. Currently, he was headed to a secluded cliff he had found the day before to meditate. There was a sickness going around, and although it wasn't contagious, Iroh hadn't wanted him to be in a populated area. So, he was going to be alone away from other people.

Or so he thought.

He halted as he entered the clearing to the cliff. There was a person- you -lying down in the grass, staring at the moon. Remembering his tattoo, a spark of hope lit in his chest. He was Fire Lord. The war was over. It would be safe to fall in love. Maybe this was his soul mate.

His hope quickly turned to dread as he got closer. They had the sickness. Judging from their skin and frailty, they probably didn't even have an hour left.

Still, even if they aren't his soulmate, Zuko wasn't about to let anybody die alone.

"Uh, it's pretty cold out," he said as he got closer, and visibly winced. It wasn't cold. It was the middle of summer in the Fire Nation.

You shrugged, not having the strength to sit up to see who your soulmate was.. "I want the last thing I see to be the moon."

Zuko's breath hitched. "No," he whispered.

You chuckled bitterly. "We finally meet, and I'll be dead by morning. Sounds about right." you paused. "You can go, if you want. I don't want you to have to see this."

"I'm not letting my soulmate die alone," Zuko said determinedly, his legs shaking, and laid down beside you. You looked at him, and raised your eyebrows in shock as you recognized him.

"Well, look at that! If I hadn't gotten this cough, I would've been the queen!" you joked. "Nice to meet you, Fire Lord. I'm Y/N."

Y/N. It was the most beautiful word Zuko had ever heard.

"Just call me Zuko," he replied, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. You two laid there for a few minutes, drinking in each other's appearances. You knew he was handsome, as you'd seen his face plastered all over the Fire Nation for years. First listed as a traitor and most recently, Fire Lord. He was even more handsome up close. His amber eyes had flecks of fire orange in them. And his scar? You thought that it was the most handsome part of all. It showed he'd been through something terrible, and overcame it.

Zuko couldn't believe someone so beautiful could exist. You were gorgeous. Stunning. Even in your frail state, your complexion blemished from the sickness, your cheekbones jutting out sharply, Zuko had never seen anything so divine.

"Y/N?" he whispered, his eyes locked with yours.

"Yes, Zuko?"

He gulped, bringing his other hand to cup your cheek and resting his forehead on yours. "Tell me everything about you."

And so you did.

You told him your childhood. You told him about the first time you broke a bone. You told him how you felt when your father died. You told him that your favorite food is Roast Duck. You told him that you always planned on naming your daughter Izumi. You told him how you donated everything you owned to the Ursa Medical Center that Zuko had recently set up. You told him how excited you were whenever you heard that the Avatar had returned, because finally there would be peace.

"I was so happy that it was you who became Fire Lord and not somebody else." You had your head on his chest at this point, his legs tangled with yours.

"Why?" Zuko's fingers were running through your sweat-soaked hair, the wetness not registering.

"Because," you hummed, "You betrayed the Fire Nation to help the Avatar. You were willing to leave everything you'd ever known to bring peace." you paused, tilting your chin so you could look at him. "Plus, you're pretty cute, too."

Zuko blushed as the corners of his mouth turned upwards. "You think I'm cute? Have you seen yourself?"

You chuckled weakly. "Yeah, I'm a real dime piece right now." Zuko's hand stilled. He leaned up on one elbow so he could look down on you.

"Y/N," he said seriously, "You are incandescently beautiful. You are oh so pulchritudinous. You are the most stunning of all of God's creations."

You smiled at him. If your body could produce enough water for it, tears would be running down your face. "Thank you," you whispered. As Zuko laid back down, you spoke again. "Now, tell me everything about you."

So he did. He told you about his mother. He told you about being banished. He told you how it was trying to capture the Avatar. He told you about his time in Ba Sing Se. He told you about his uncle. He told you about being friends with the Avatar, and joining their group. He told you what it was like to face Azula. He told you about how Aang and Sokka had ripped off the ribbon, which you both shared a laugh at.

He sighed. "I wish we had more time," he choked out. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I know I just met you, but I can't imagine living without you."

"Well, that's the thing about soulmates," you replied, running your hand through his hair and bringing his head down to yours until your lips were centimetres apart. "We'll never truly be apart."

And then Zuko was kissing you. He was kissing your lips and your nose and your cheeks and your forehead and your eyebrows and back to your lips. He was kissing you as though he thought that if he kissed you enough, he could save you. He was kissing you as if it would be the last kiss you would ever share, which was likely.

You were the one to break the kiss, as you were losing breath. You could feel it coming, and Zuko could, too. "I- I don't know what to do," he whimpered, holding you closer. "We've only known each other for an hour. We should be able to have a life together, to grow old together. It isn't fair!"

"Shh, Zuko," you hummed into the hollow of his neck. "We'll see each other again, my love. And whenever you miss me, just look at the moon. This," you pulled back and gestured to the moon above, "Is our moon. Forever." You laid your head back on his chest, and your voice was barely above a whisper when you next spoke. "Can you sing me to sleep?"

Zuko's heart was breaking, but he couldn't say no. "Of course," he hiccuped, choking back a sob, before he began singing a song his mother used to sing him.

“Deep in the meadow, under the willow A bed of grass, a soft green pillow Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes And when again they open, the sun will rise.

Here it's safe, here it's warm Here the daisies guard you from every harm Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true Here is the place where I love you.

As he finished the song, his heart stopped. You weren't breathing. Agony, the worst pain he’d ever felt, ripped through his chest. An inhuman scream erupted from his throat as he pulled your body into him, his tears falling. He'd just met you, and yet you had become his world. And you were gone.

He stayed there the entire night until Iroh found him the next morning, still clutching your ice-cold corpse. Iroh's heart snapped, immediately knowing what must have happened. It took hours to pry Zuko away from you. He spent the next week crying into Iroh's shoulder. "I don't think she heard me tell her I love her, Uncle," he sputtered before another sob wracked his shoulders.

"She knew," Iroh assured him. "I promise. She knew."

He arranged a funeral for you that was fit for a Fire Queen, and had you buried on the cliff where you had met.

Fire Lord Zuko's reign lasted sixty-seven years. After much pressure from his advisors about an heir, he did end up taking a wife. Her name was Mikoto, from a noble Fire Nation family. Her soulmate had died as well, so it was a perfect fit. They both knew they could never love another, but they were best friends.

They had a daughter, who Zuko named Izumi. He was still alive whenever she took over as Fire Lord, and he'd never been more proud of anything or anyone.

And yet, he still missed you. He thought about you every day, and every night he would sit and stare at the moon. Sometimes he would cry, thinking about what could have been. Other times he would be happy, telling you about Izumi's accomplishments. He would always sleep with the window open, so that the last thing he saw before he went to sleep was your moon.

He died at the age of one hundred in his sleep, his face still turned towards the moon.

Zuko's eyes opened to find himself in the Spirit World face to face with Iroh himself.

"Uncle!" he cried, wrapping him into a hug.

"Hello, Zuko!" Iroh said with a smile. "It's nice to see you again!"

"Hey Sifu Hotman, you better give me a hug, too!" Zuko whirled around to see Aang, and his smile widened as he jumped into the Avatar's arms. Stepping back, Zuko noticed that Aang was a lot older than he was.

"Why am I seventeen again?" he asked.

"For the same reason that I am twenty-five," Iroh explained, "The age I was when my son was born. Here, you remain the age you were when you were at your happiest."

"I was happiest when I was twenty-one, when Katara and I got married," Aang explained. "You're seventeen because that's how old you were when you met them."

Zuko froze as he heard footsteps behind him, before whirling around.

"Hello, My Love," you said. You were healthy and in a beautiful red gown. Zuko's breath hitched, his eyes filling with tears. He ran forward to envelop you in a hug.

"I've missed you, too," you chuckled as he peppered your face with kisses. The two of you stared at one another, soaking in each other's appearances yet again. He rested his forehead against yours.

"We can finally spend forever together," he said in what was meant to be a whisper, but he was so elated that it came out as a yell.

"I can't wait," you replied in the same tone.

"I love you." The words Zuko had been wanting to tell you finally left his lips.

"I know," you answered, cupping his cheeks with your hands. "I love you, too."

As the two of you shared another kiss, the full moon above seemed to shine a little brighter.

THIS THIS THISSS LITERALLY ALL OF THIS one of the big things that i plan on causing the rift between iroh and lu ten in my au is because lu ten keeps trying to tell iroh that he thinks ozai is sketchy and is worried for the safety of ursa and the children and iroh keeps saying stupid shit like "ozai will parent how ozai parents his business is his business not yours" and "you cant change your uncle the only thing you can change is yourself" and "ursa wouldnt let the children get truly hurt" and x y and z proverbs. so lu ten is like oh okay then and DOES change himself. and he changes by overcompensating and stretching himself out (juggling his own duties while keeping vigilance whenever ozais around and making sure azula and zuko dont do or say anything that can get them in trouble) to act as a barrier between ozai and his own children all while trying not to directly step on ozais toes so blatantly that ozai actually has the sound right to challenge lu ten for disrespect or enforce it that lu ten is forbidden from being allowed around his cousins (which he has the right to as their father). the only thing preventing lu ten from completely keeping his cousins safe is the fact that he isnt their father. the only thing keeping lu ten safe from ozais wrath is the fact that ozai isnt his father. it all circles back around the fact that ozai is a dickhead at the end of the day

the only order between zuko azula and lu ten that matters is lu ten being the primary shield from ozai fuckery and zuko being the secondary shield from ozai fuckery. but lu ten was a primary shield and the strongest because he was an adult himself and he wasnt ozais child so ozai had no right to put his hands on lu ten without having to answer to iroh and then zuko is the secondary shield because he was the main target of all of ozais ire until he freed himself from it. and then with them both gone its just azula alone

I just wanted to ask this since I came across a k/ataang blog claiming that zutarians never even consider zuko abdicating and moving to the swt, instead pushing the firelady narrative and that katara would have been more free to travel and do what she wanted as aang’s wife. Do you have any thoughts on that particular outcome, because I would personally love an au with zuko and katara in the swt together, even though the main obstacle to that is that zuko has no one he trusts to take over the throne except iroh, who doesn’t want it (as far as I can remember, anyway)

First of all, the claim that ‘zutarians never even consider x’ is factually inaccurate since I have seen, with my very own eyes, zutarians making these AUs themselves lmfao. Zuko abdicating the throne and moving to the SWT with Katara isn’t super popular, but it absolutely exists in our content. And the funny thing is, I bet those same kataang shippers would blow the biggest bubbles if you tried to get them to explain why Katara was so sad and lonely in canon, and why she was left home alone to raise two of her kids while Aang went gallivanting around the word with his airbending child, and why she was evidently chained to the South Pole to the point where Kya thought it was a sacrifice because she had to move back home to take care of her (and Katara wasn’t even able to attend her own granddaughter’s airmaster ceremony)--if marrying Aang was such a freeing experience and she was able to ‘travel and do what she wanted’.

But anyway. This isn’t about Kataang, this is about the ‘Zuko moves to the SWT’ AU--and honestly, I love it! It has a lot of potential. Even in my own canonverse I headcanon that Izumi, as the oldest steambaby, is raised and groomed for leadership from a young age, and rather than continue the tradition of holding onto the crown until death (often violent), he passes down the crown once she is old enough and feels ready to rule, and winds up spending most of the rest of his life in the SWT with Katara, where she had a waterbending academy set up (and they lead the White Lotus together, helping to raise Korra after Aang’s passing), though they still traveled all over the world quite a bit even into old age.

I will say, though, that having Zuko abdicate the throne young is a very tricky prospect. Because as it stands, the only people in line for the crown are Iroh--who has no heir and, as you pointed out, did not want it and probably feels like he is not deserving of the trust of the world in that manner, given his history as a FN general--and Azula (or Ozai, if the New Ozai Society managed to bust him out of prison and put him back on the throne), who is a terrible choice for obvious reasons, especially immediately post canon. (But I don’t think even redeemed!Azula should have that position of power, even years after the war--I think being put in that position would do a lot more damage to her than she could do good with it.)

However, I think this could work really well with a Lu Ten Lives AU--I’ve seen a lot of headcanons about how Iroh and Zuko probably kept almost-meeting a brainwashed Lu Ten in BSS and never quite realizing it, and how easy it would be to find him post-war, help him heal--and i could see this expanding to then allow him to take his rightful place on the throne, with Zuko’s and Iroh’s help, maybe even Ursa’s if you work in Zuko-finds-his-mom to that (not at all like the search though, I hate the way the comics did it for a lot or reasons), and then Zuko being free to go wherever his heart leads (to Katara, it always leads him to Katara), which would honestly be a fic I’d be really interested in reading!

Or writing......I’m actually really into this idea holy shit. What do you think, anon??? Or anyone else reading, I’ve never actually thought of doing a Lu Ten Lives canon divergence myself but it would be so fun to explore =000

Avatar Azula AU- question

So I’ve started an Avatar Azula AU and I was just hoping to gauge how people would feel about an idea I had because I’ve really been on the fence about it 

The idea basically is around the fact that I would need someone to take Azula’s role in book 2 and 3 for a lot of the plot and I was wondering what people would think if this person was Lu Ten

This would be an AU where he was taken as a prisoner at Ba Sing Se and Iroh believed he was dead and by the time he returned to the Fire Nation, Iroh had already left with Zuko so he doesn’t know that he is alive and Ozai could send him after Azula as a way to regain his right to the throne

Obviously this would be an OCC Lu Ten and I may have to make him a bit younger, but I just think it could be an interesting dilemma for Iroh to deal with while he is also trying to balance helping Zuko/Azula? 

I was just hoping to see if people would find this as interesting as I have (even as a very underdeveloped idea since I’m a long way from Book 2)?

[I should also mention that I’m not one for angsty endings for characters I like so he would likely get help from Iroh by the end if I ever get that far with the idea]

What's your favorite azutara headcanon?

So I love the idea that Azula absolutely hates the cold (like the extreme cold of the Water Tribes) but everyone thinks that it doesn't bother her because she's a firebender. Katara (and possibly Kanna?) is the only one that notices how much it bothers her and makes it her mission to give her the warmest clothes she can because she knows that Azula loves everything else about the tribe

I also like the idea that Azula is a great artist and that she uses it as one of her therapy techniques after the war and that Katara loves seeing whatever she drew/painted. She particularly loves drawing things from the Southern Water Tribe because it's so different from the Fire Nation.

Also, not exactly Azutara, but I'm obsessed with a Azula and Sokka friendship. Like they would start of reluctantly agreeing to get along for Katara and then one day they would realise that they're actually best friends lol

Can't think of any more at the moment because most of my mind is usually occupied with head canons for my Avatar Azula AU (mostly for book 3/reuniting with Ursa) and I'm not sure if they're what you're looking for here! haha

Azutara prompt: katara and azula have a daughter (kya) and they both have to go to attend some political affair but their daughter is pretty clingy and thinks her mommies are leaving her (kya is around 2 or 4)

AU 2: Soulmark

(Ships: Katara x Aang x Toph, Mai x Ty Lee, Zuko x Sokka x Suki, Hakoda x Bato x Kya, Ursa x Ikem)

Taking inspiration from @incorrectzukka, soulmarks in this au appear when you love someone, wether it be platonic, romantic, or otherwise, and go grey when the friendship/relationship/etc is broken. It doesn’t go grey if they die, it just goes a bit duller in color, to represent the person not being there, but them still loving you and you still loving them.

People tend to collect markings from their family first, eventually branching out to get markings from their friends, lovers, anyone and everyone they love. People with a lot of love for everyone get a lot of markings, people with no markings are likely sympathised with, as they never had family, friends, or lovers that loved them enough to leave a mark. but sometimes, people are wary of the unmarked, as it might be the person themself who didnt love the people in their life enough.

-Ozai has no colored markings. He has two generally, iroh’s greyed marking of tea from when he was a young child, and his mother’s dulled marking of a fire lily from when he was born. He refuses to show them, or let anyone know they even exist.

-Hakoda was born with his parents marks (an arctic flower, perhaps a pasque flower, on his shoulder from his mother, and the water tribe’s helmet on his back from his father. his father’s has been dull for a long time) and over time got a water droplet on his upper arm from katara, a betrothel necklace low on his neck near his collarbone from kya, the three eye-shapes of bato’s helmet on his upper arm (opposite to katara’s), and many more from his friends and tribe. (a lot of his friend-markings are dulled now, it keeps him up at night.)

-Sokka, by the time katara was 1, had a bright blue water droplet on his neck from his sister, a full moon side by side with two crescent moons on his forearm from his father, an arctic flower on his shoulder blade from his grandmother, a betrothel necklace on the hollow his throat (same place as hakoda’s mark from her) from his mother, and a trio of eyes on the back of his neck just above the necklace from Bato. He also has some from the older men in the tribe that got attached to him, a few of those markings are either dulled or greyed, and sokka struggles to keep the tears away every time he sees one of the dulled markings.

-Katara has most of the same markings, with some different friend ones, but she meets aang, she gains his blue arrow quite quickly. its on the ‘back’ of her forearm from the elbow to the wrist. Sokka gets one as well, but a tiny bit slower, it starts at the ball of his shoulder and goes right down to his elbow, on the same arm as katara’s arrow.

-Aang gets katara’s on his inner wrist, sokka’s crossed sword and boomerang on his back, toph’s rough pair of boulders diagnal-and-down from sokka’s, suki’s gold fan on his leg, all of his air nomad friends and family’s dulled markings on the side of his ribs and on his chest, and zuko’s burn scar with a golden glare on his shoulder. Katara swears he keeps getting more markings each day.

-Zuko, pre-gaang, had only four markings. A greyed theatre mask on the left side of his ribs from his mother, a dulled flame with a heart in it over his own heart for lu ten, a cup of tea on his upper arm from iroh, and lightning bolts spreading out against the middle of his chest from azula. one dulled, one greyed, but iroh and azula’s never did either. 

-post-joining-the-gaang, Zuko has 12 markings now. Jet’s greyed crossed hook-swords on his back, Mai’s throwing knife on his inner wrist (pointing up to his palm), Ty Lee’s pink star on the back of his neck, Katara’s droplet on his other wrist, sokka’s sword and boomerang on his shoulder, aang’s arrow starting at the start of his leg down to his knee, toph’s boulders on his back below jet’s mark, and suki’s fan on his shoulder blade. (8 from the gaang + jet, the other four from iroh, lu ten, ursa, and azula)

There's a reason that even if Ursa's arc is technically rescuing Azula in the Azulon AU I say that the Fire Lord version is nicer:

The Azulon AU Ursa willingly left her preteen daughter with Azulon and Iroh and completely blinded herself to Azula's existence for an extra year further shoving her daughter into a memory hole. By the time she does change her mind she's trying to take her daughter from a parent she actually loves and vice-versa to one whose attitude is at best reliant on a living, breathing Azula doing exactly what she wants as she wants or else ( *Rodney Dangerfield eyeroll* like that's gonna happen, LOL).

Her motives are superficially good, but the execution is very, very lagging.

By contrast Fire Lord AU Ursa intended Azula to get her tour of the Palace and learn the hard way that the grass is not in fact greener and then make her peace with an Ursa who would have 'graciously' finally rewarded Azula with what she was seeking and acting like it until she actually managed to believe it.

She's also the furthest thing from neglectful here and if anything her actual parental sin is being both a blend of overbearing and trying to force Azula into the image she wanted and being irritated that unlike good sweet Zuko the precious cinnamon roll Azula has a mind of her own and absent the legacy of Ozai's brutal brand of physical abuse has no real fears of speaking her own mind.

All of which she uses to dangle along the 'do X and I will give you the love you've always wanted' and it works until the snipe hunt clues Azula in that it was an illusion all along.

The real kicker is that for all this Fire Lord Ursa is also the best Fire Lord in terms of raising their kids even with this in this AU. She doesn't terrorize them the way Sozin did Azulon and his brothers and sisters, nor does she play favorites in the same way she does in canon and that Azulon did in canon as well. Her kids are not physically abused though she does mercilessly exploit Azula with a kind of crude Pavlovian conditioning.

The bar was in the Marianas Trench so she didn't need much to be the least dangerous Fire Lord to her family.

Modern Au where the gaang is under the same dance company

A few things before I start writing everything is that I am changing the ages so here they are when the main story happens ig?? Here they are:

Zuko: 16

Mai: 16

Ty Lee: 15

Sokka: 15

Suki: 15

Katara: 14

Aang: 14

Toph: 14

Azula: 14

Anyways, here we go!

•Ozai is killed by Ursa when Zuko is 12 and Azula is ten

•Which sucks of course, and because this man owns a super famous dance company thing, the police have to investigate

•They question Ursa, Iroh, Lu Ten(yeah he’s alive thank you), Zuko and Azula

•They quickly realize that Ozai was super abusive

•Instead of looking for his murder(which they are pretty sure is Ursa or Iroh), they say it was a suicide (normally I would say acab but police can be okay here)

•Ursa takes over the dance company and renames it to Roku Dance or something

•Before it was named after Sozin, and that’s yuck

•Anyways, all of the dancers that Ozai ever chose were Fire Nation dancers

•So Ursa immediately decides to hire an Earth Kingdom group called “The Kyoshi Warriors”

•They are comprised of dancers who are all about 14-18 besides one girl

•Suki!!! Anyways, 11 year old Suki meets 12 Zuko and they are friends really quickly

•It’s really nice for Zuko because he doesn’t have friends :(

•The Kyoshi Warriors see how close Zuko and Suki are and just go:

•Oh Suki you should be doing duets with think boy ;)

•So that’s what goes on with Suki and Zuko

•Also Zuko is blind in his eye where the scar would be, but since Ozai got murdered that DIDNT HAPPEN

•So Zuko is just blind in that eye

•His school decides that he should be friends with a girl name Toph because “!!Zuko!! She’s!!! Blind!!!”

•Zuko hates this at first because he hates being forced to get along with people

•But Toph is cool

•So Zuko, Suki and Toph are a little trio for a while

•About a year later, Zuko is living in a little apartment type thing in the dance studio (sh it’s my AU and I have my reasons) because his mom and step-dad’s house is far away from his school which is very close to the dance studio

•Suki has the same situation just as the Kyoshi warriors do, she has her own little apartment thing

•Mai, Azula and Ty Lee have their little apartment thing too (because I said so)

•One day, Zuko finds this boy Aang, who is 12 and was raised by monks

•He just ran away because...

•Honestly your choice

•Anyways, Zuko is like “Oh bro, you can stay in my apartment for a bit.”

•Aang is super excited because, wow!! People who aren’t monks!!

•Toph and Aang get along right away

•Suki thinks he’s chill

•So Zuko pleads with Ursa to let Aang stay

•And she does!! Because Aang can dance!!!

•Anyways, Aang and Zuko share an apartment and become really good friends

•At some point they adopt a puppy and name him Appa

•They regret adopting him as a puppy because he was a lap dog when he was tiny, but is now giant and almost crushes people

•They also adopt a ferret that they name Momo

•Zuko adopts a lizard and names him Druk

•Aang refers to the three animals as his and Zuko’s children

•Zuko hates this but eventually gives in

•Then!!! When Zuko is 16, Ursa accepts this girl named Katara to be in the dance studio!!

•Katara so excited!! Her fathers(I said Bakoda rights) move her and her older brother Sokka to the place where the dance studio is

•Katara begs Sokka to come with her and he obliges

•They walk in expecting to see a bunch of dancers practicing some really hard music

•Instead they see

•A boy will blue arrow tattoos sitting on the back of a girl doing push-ups (Inspired by a post that I will link at the bottom because Tumblr is being RUDE) the boy is on his phone

•A boy with a very neat bun and gold eyes(Sokka notes that last part in his mind) is sitting on the floor and there is a giant fluffy dog sitting on top of him

•A girl with short hair just laying on the ground

•Katara is just like, “Uh?? Hi???”

•She gets a hi from all of them

•The boy with the tattoos calls out “That’s 69 Toph!”

•The girl, (Apparently Toph is her name)doing the push-ups, just calls back “Nice”

•Sokka is like “Okay Katara, I’m going to go”

•The girl on the floor hoists herself up onto her elbows and is like, “You can stay if you want, it’s not like anyone else is here today”

•Sokka is confused because?? Aren’t people supposed to be there

•Suki explains that this specific dance studio has the Kyoshi Warriors; Whatever Azula, Ty Lee and Mai’s trio is called; Zuko; Aang; and now Katara

•The Kyoshi Warriors (besides Suki, since she accidentally sprained her ankle) are at competition and so are Azula, Ty Lee and Mai

•Katara gives Sokka a pleading look so he complies(though he really shouldn’t)

•And that is how Sokka and Katara meet the rest of the gaang

If I write this (I probably won’t haha) it’ll feature Zukka, Kataang, Toph x Suki(no I don’t know the ship name thank you very much) Tyzula(but Azula won’t be toxic because I just want them to be happy), and Bakoda.
