whether it's canon or your au, what do you think the agents, Sim troopers, and ai would dress up as for Halloween? I especially see Wash, Caboose, Tucker, Sarge, Theta, Omega, Gamma, York, South, and Connie being gung-ho about it.
Oo!! Ill do this for my au!!!
Blood Gulch
Carolina: The boys had to pay her just so they could put a cheap cat ear headband on her. She did allow Maine to do face paint afterward and vehemently defends it to anyone who might make fun of it.
Wyoming: A vampire. He puts way to much effort into it and ends up unable to wash off the face paint for a week.
Maine: Swamp Monster. Yes he has glowing eyes. Yes the Red Team collectively pissed themselves when they saw him from across the canyon.
Washington: A glow-in-the dark skeleton. Basic, but he insists he ALWAYS goes as a skeleton. (He admits it's because it was tradition that he and his sisters all matched on halloween, and that skeleton was broad enough to have fun with every year)
York: Werewolf, secretly stoked once he sees Carolina with cat ears. He has deluded himself into thinking they are in some sort of couples costume.
North: An angel. (Its bad quality like from party city)
South: A devil. (also party city quality)
Texas: The grim reaper. She has a really creepy skull mask covered in old (hopefully fake) blood, and delights herself by scaring her team.
CT: She's got regular clothes on save for a pumkin hoodie, citing how she wasn't allowed to celebrate Halloween as a kid and doesn't get the hype.
Freelancer
Church: Will not dress up, no matter how many times Tucker tries to get him in a couples costume. Halloween is for babies and he is way to cool for it.
Omega: On the other hand, Church's AI dresses up like Beetlejuice. (He really wants Church to be Lydia)
Tucker: A vampire, but sexy. He wanted Church to be a vampire hunter, but that didn't end well. He has those fake fangs in that give you a horrible lisp.
Caboose: Rudolph the red nosed reigndeer. Yes he knows its not Christmas, he just really likes that one stop motion film.
Sigma: He is dressed like a court jester. Point and laugh.
Sarge: Uncle Sam. He would've let off fireworks if Donut hadn't confiscated them instantly.
Gamma: Also, Uncle Sam. He makes fake fireworks :)
Simmons: Data from Star Trek. It's his favorite character! (He's just like me for real!)
Delta: He does not dress up. That is illogical. (Nah, he's Spock LMAO)
Grif: He wears black and calls it a day. He's just here for the candy tbh.
Theta: Headless Horseman! He replaced the horse with a big holographic dog, but Grif will punch anyone who tries to point out the inaccuracy.
Lopez: They covered him in cardboard and painted him like Optimus Prime
Donut: A fried egg.
Doc: A piece of toast.
Kaikaina: Bacon.
Iota: A nurse! She dressed up just like Doc McStuffins!
Eta: Pippi Longstockings!
Lopez 2.0: Cardboard costume Megatron.
Others:
Florida: A zombie with way too much gore. Like, stomach churning, genuinely upsetting amounts. Has been asked to leave the function.
Georgia: Bee from Bee and Puppycat! They have a plushie of puppycat, though!
Ohio: Dorothy from Wizard of Oz
Idaho: The Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz
Iowa: The Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz

Rvb skating hcs, bc I miss skating but I can’t figure out how to put the brake back on my blades, and where I live is rlly hilly so I need it or else I'm trapped in the cul-de-sac.
Putting a break cause its a real long list lol
Skateboards:
Alpha Church (Can’t actually skateboard, swears he can but he's sooo wobbly) Tex (Can actually skateboard, makes fun of church) Tucker (Between Church and Tex’s levels, hes decent at it) Wash (Don’t think I need to explain this one) Niner (I’ve seen a lot of wheelchair niner hcs, shed totally do wheelchair skateboarding) Palomo (Falls over a lot, but hey he just keeps on going.) Bitters (Absolutely holds it over Palomos head that he’s better at skateboarding) Theta (canon)
Rollerskates:
Kai (Dunno if this one needs an explanation, she might like derby ngl) Donut (He seems like he’d use them as transportation, just skatin around) South (She’d do roller derby and get so competitive about it) CT (Seen some videos of people doing sweet flips and tricks w skates) Ohio (She gives me the vibe of someone who’s got cool iridescent pink roller skates) Andersmith (Picked up skating cause the younger lieutenants were into it) Matthews (He’s a bit unbalanced, but he’s determined)
Rollerblades:
Carolina (Speed, blades are faster than skates) Simmons (He is shaky as hell, but he is trying. Won’t skate anywhere that’s not flat.) Kimball (Lina taught her, they race) Dr Grey (Dunno, just vibes) Jensen (Much like Simmons but with more uneven terrain) Epsilon Church (Picked blades so he could skate w Lina, and to be different from Wash n Alpha) Omega/O’malley (I'm just picturing him chasing people around at high speeds, cackling) Eta (Wanted to try something new, and to spend time w Theta)
Iceskates:
Florida (Specifically figure skating) Felix (Honestly idk, he’s cold and sharp like an ice skate) Delta (He’d ramble about why it’s an intellectual sport, but actually just thinks its fun) Sigma (He’d be rlly pretentious about it)
Scooter:
York (Guy has no balance but still wants to be included) Iota (Cheers on Eta and Theta, does sick scooter tricks)
Other:
Grif (I think he’d have a longboard that he rides around) Sarge (Quad bike) Doc (Also a longboarder) Idaho (I think he’d prefer dirt bike racing) Iowa (Quad bike, it’s like a mongoose) Caboose (Mountain bike, no real explanation, just vibes)
Doesn’t skate (or bike or anything):
Lopez (He prefers cars, might've made an electric skateboard at some point but doesn't rlly use it) Wyoming (Can’t see him skating at all ngl) North (Cheers everyone else on and records videos) Maine (First aid) Locus (Tried to skate once and fell over. Now he just broods from the benches.) Doyle (Too nervous, prefers to just watch) Gamma (I don’t think he’d go outside much ngl)

HELLO, this is your open invitation to talk about any song choices or parallels on your jace-and-jaceclones playlist collection that you wish to elaborate upon, bc I've been listening to them all weekend and I'm absolutely obsessed. Incredible music selections and I'm possessed with emotions now; thank you for your work 🫡
OH MY GOD YES okay so i think i'll start with just like. the general comment that i used songs from a lot of the same artists on them because i wanted them to feel/sound similar but also have distinct vibes - i think a different mcr song appears on each one, there's jack off jill on three of them, etc.
buuuuuuut they also all have at least one pick that's wildly different that i kind of think as the standout/signature song. i wanted to represent that theyre all Of the same guy (jaceprime) but theyre different facets of him: devotion, hedonism, rage. also because i'm insane they do have an order to them and there's an arc within each one
ETA after i finished writing all of this: jesus fuck it got long i'm so sorry i'm insane
i'll go in the order that i finished them in:
for j2 (the acolyte), the vibe is probably the Most distinct from the other three, since his starts out so happy and optimistic; all the small things! baby you're a haunted house! look at these lyrics!!
theyre love songs!! ringtone, too, that's the one i think of as j2s signature song, since it's in a wildly different genre. ringtone is also where the playlist kind starts to get an inkling of despair and tragedy, too
spellbound + heaven, iowa + closer kind of make up a weird trilogy in my head of "j2's thoughts when he and porter are alone together" since it's like, feeling an inexorable pull towards him, feeling so so so weak for him, and of course: religious devotion mixed with intense horniness.
i feel the need to justify the "closer" pick for j2 and not j3, i did go back and forth on it but honestly it's like... j3 doesnt worship the same way j2 does. j2's the acolyte, not the whore. thats also why tourniquet, shame, and all again for you are on here.
lastly for j2: drowning lessons is the unofficial j2porter vegas wedding song to me. the imagery of it is so evocative. look at this.
for j3 (the whore), obviously the vibe is like, getting railed within an inch of your life. but i also wanted songs that conveyed a sense of desperation + misery and self hatred. because j3 has issues and problems.
give 'em hell kid + celebrity skin + ponyboy are like. the Fuck Me trio. j3 wants you to want him, he looks good, he knows he looks good, what are you gonna do about it? he's got a half-life of his own and he's gonna spend it with the hottest people he can.
straight to video, joyriding, and everybody's fool are what i was talking about re. desperation, misery, and self-hatred. he's never been fulfilled or felt like he has a purpose the same way j2 does. he doesnt like looking in the mirror longer than it takes to put on his makeup.
violent pornography + eat me alive are like, two sides of the same coin in my head. more Fuck Me vibes but like, this time with a definite sense of danger and obsession. obligatory choking mention. obligatory erotic cannibalism mention. these things are basically part of the starbreaker bible atp.
and for j3's signature song: living dead girl by rob zombie. he IS the living dead girl to me!! he's jace post-resurrection, trying to fill up the new void inside him with anything, be it pleasures of the flesh or just straight up flesh. he's back from the dead and he's gonna make it your problem. unlike j2's born sexy yesterday he's more like. resurrected sexy (and evil) last night.
for j4 (the devil): the main thing here was like. rebellion. going against the narrative that's trying to draw her in. she's gonna escape the cycle or die trying.
i think my favorite pulls for this were playing god, losing his touch, and going under, which in my mind made up like a trio of being fed the fuck up with someone and walking out for good. there are also a couple songs on here like dead throne and IAGTKTPOTUSOA (cant type out the song name now jic the fbi is watching) where i was like... j4 would listen to these while she's mad. she deserves to have her metal and harsh noise moment.
ofc j4 is still Of Jace so i had to include i hate everything about you, whore, and noise and kisses because unfortunately he's still attracted to porter. why is whore on here but adrenalize was on j3 (the whore)'s playlist? well. whore is WAY more of a Fuck You than adrenalize.
and j4's signature song is ofc ptolemaea. no matter how hard she fights back and how close she gets to escaping, she always ends up back at porter's side. it's inevitable.
aaaaaaaaand lastly for jace's playlist (the one): i think everyone's already noticed that half of this playlist is where the titles for my fics come from but i did want to say that explicitly.
jaceprime's playlist is very much about devotion even when it hurts. giving up parts of yourself to make someone else love you. being doomed. not being understood even by the person who knows you inside and out.
its also like. sleepless nights and waking up disoriented and unsure of who you are. feeling crushed and abandoned but too proud to do anything about it. brain stew, i slept with someone in fall out boy, and broken bones are very that.
i did include drowning lessons on this one again, i think it's the only repeat i have, and i didnt want to but man it's what i listened to while i was writing jace getting strangled to death in his marital bed so i HAD to. i also think it fits because j2 and jace are funhouse mirrors of each other and it's fun to think about how they're both interpreting the lyrics in very different ways.
for jace's signature song, it's dig up her bones. he got brought back wrong in service of an evil plan! it doesnt matter what came before, who he used to be! that jace died and now this one's here to stay. it's similar to j3 on purpose, but j3's more jennifer check while jaceprime is more bride of frankenstein.
lastly, white crosses is kind of the bookend to this whole deal because of the i'll make my way back home to you chorus. that's very starbreaker to me. at the end of the day, theyre each others' homes. theyre all they have left, even if they hate it.

day 3: last day on the train and arriving at chicago il
July 18, 2024
"to parse down a life
means to sow a dozen seeds
off the modern path"
I slept through most of Kansas, I don't remember how much sleep I got (maybe 2 hours, I couldn't get comfortable) but I do remember seeing the everpresent sprawl of moonlit cornstalks out the window.
I woke up to the sun rising and, seeing it was 5am, I started to go back to sleep, but Z came to my seat and woke me back up because the Kansas City stop was 10 minutes away (because apparently my clock wasn't synced up to the time zone—it was actually 6am, not 7am, we jumped ahead an hour, meaning I probably didn't get as much sleep as I should have...).
I exchanged contact information with A, then got off the train to stretch my legs. At Kansas City Union Station the stop was only 15 minutes, so my goodbyes to Z and A were brief but I wish them well and hope to hear from them again soon.
As we departed from Kansas City to dive deeper into the Midwest I got another seatmate—an older woman and her two granddaughters, also on their way to Chicago to be picked up by the daugher. The kids complimented my stuffed animal and were very fidgety, they couldn't have been older than like 8 or 9. The grandmother gave me some grapes which I appreciated since I was dehydrated.
The scenery of Missouri and Iowa was mostly farmland, which besides the occasional creature (I swear I saw a crow or hawk with a snake in its mouth). It wasn't very interesting to look at but we passed over a lot of rivers, including the Missouri River, the Des Moines River, and most importantly the Mississippi River which we shot over once we passed Fort Madison Iowa and entered Illinois. There was a lot of different bodies of water flecked with what I believe was playful summer fistfuls of green algae—ponds, rivers, streams, lakes, swamps...
I spent the last 3 or 4 hours of my trip either listening to music or eavesdropping on the grandma and grandkids beside me. At some point the grandma was asleep with her eyes closed and one of the kids leaned over and said "grandma can I have my jelly?" to which Grandma replied, without opening her eyes, "No, because its not 11 o clock yet" and the kid (in awe) exclaims "how did you know that" (it was, in fact, not 11am).
Another thing to make note of was me taking advantage of the remaining time, I changed into clean clothes, then repacked my blanket and the food that didn't go rancid into my suitcase (I had to throw out the yam I was saving for myself because it smelled like mold...). I was obstructing the hallway for the brief 5 minutes I was repacking and I apologized to the conductor because he had to squeeze by me at the lower storage hall where the luggage was, but he just shook is head calmly and said "Oh, its okay, I am a trained professional, mind you" and very daintily weaved by me (mind you, this is a very grizzled old man with a beard, he's probably at least 70 years old).
I never went to the observation car because every time I went in to refill my water it smelled bad. I was getting increasingly inpatient about arriving because my body hurt and I wanted to shower and lie down. @germfreeadulthood and I were texting about the Amish and keeping track of our respective ETAs.
We breezed through the scruffy suburbs leading into Chicago and I made a minor observation that the newer suburbs reminded me more of the Southern California suburbs in terms of less architectural details and overall more dull and boring. I also noticed the closer we got to Chicago the gas prices jumped.
I chatted a bit with the grandma next to me about travel (she was traveimg to Santa Cruz from San Jose with Amtrak buses)—her granddaughters pestered me about my destination, where I was from, asked if you could use the train to travel across "the whole world like...Miami?" (the grandmother replied yes, you can use Amtrak to get to Miami to which they squealed "as in, Miami Florida????") and if it was possible to stay on the train even when the conductors tell you to get off ("Then you get arrested"). I bid them farewell and exited—got kind of lost looking for @germfreeadulthood at Union Station but I found them and they offered me kimchi onigiri that they made, which I nibbled on later. We waited at the street corner for our uber back.
@germfreeadulthood set up an air mattress for me ahead of time which was very nice. I showered (finally), and @germfreeadulthood made us curry while we chatted about a lot of different things: menial gossip, academia, potential disciplines for their PhD interests (once again i am reminded of my limited grasp of theory, but at least a lot of the Big Names...), the possibility of revising the oppressive religious structuralism of the amish into a marxist-leninist commune (I promise this was way more interesting than it sounds—between my random Googling on the train and seeing the Amish in real time made me wonder if it was possible to create a sort of sanctuary that carries some of the values of hard work and anti-materialism without the religion fundamentalism nor the shoddy inconsistent rules and misogyny, the practice of shunning/isolating members...there has to be a way to rectify the current Amish education model to be more useful if its focus is to integrate the youth into the Amish simple life instead of cutting them off at age 9 or whatever...)
I don't know if I am making sense. I am just exhausted but also very happy to see my friend again. Tomorrow we will go to the Poetry Foundation building and later look at some cool perfumes with insane descriptions and even more insane scents (the one below quite literally smelled like a burnt motherboard...)
...very excited to be able to walk around...but for now I sleep...

This load is a picture of why so many people leave trucking, don’t recommend it to others and refuse to get into the industry.
I loaded last Friday in Ocala Fl. Once loaded, and on the way to Orange MA, I called the site contact to confirm delivery. He was very quick to inform me it would not deliver Monday due to the customer ignoring his requests for a ship date for over a week. He couldn’t schedule a crane Friday afternoon for Monday morning. After some phone calls a decision was made for me to bring the load home and sit on it until a crane appointment is made.
I arrived home Saturday morning. Monday late afternoon I was informed the crane was scheduled for Friday morning and I needed to be there at 0800. So Wednesday morning I left home and headed to MA.
Friday I arrive on site at 0750 and was informed the crane wasn’t arriving until 0830. Sometime around 0900 the crane still wasn’t on site, but the trucks carrying the counterweights had arrived. The new ETA for the crane was 1000. In this time period I was informed that the crane was scheduled for 0800 and I wasn’t supposed to be on-site until 0900.
At 0930 the crane arrived and the three trucks supporting the crane were unloaded and the crane was set up by 1030. I back in and unchain. While doing this the rigging supervisor decided he didn’t like the lift points thinking they were to light, or not thick enough. After some pictures and a conversation with the manufacturer they decided to try lifting it. Now it’s 1130.
At this point we had to cancel a load we were supposed to pick up in PA going to GA that payed very well. Due to the shipper having a 1400 cut off time we had to cancel before the crane was set up. The next load has a 1600 cutoff in North Plainfield NJ which is 4.5 hours from where I was sitting. By the time I was unloaded, took pictures, sent in paperwork and got traffick and parked cars moved it was 1200 when I left. Being the traffic hell hole the north east is on a Friday afternoon I ran into the inevitable heavy traffic and was not going to make the next pickup by 1600. Now it doesn’t load until Monday morning and delivers in Iowa Wednesday morning.
So now a load that was supposed to load Friday and deliver Monday allowing us to get loaded so I could be home for Thanksgiving is postponed until Monday and delivering Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. Thus I will be on the road for Thanksgiving this year. Hopefully we can get reloaded so I’m not sitting through the holiday weekend.
Now the problem. In trucking when there are delays like this you can get compensation for downtime, but not nearly the same amount you would make running under a load. The time I spent home at the beginning of the week payed me about half my average earning potential. The wait time Friday probably won’t be payed by the broker and absolutely will not be paid by the crane service. The 5 hours waiting to load in Florida, we were only paid for 2 of those hours. The weekend I’m spending sitting in Bordentown NJ is not paid and the neither the crane crew that caused us to miss two loads not the contractors on site will pay for the down time and missed loads. Now two weeks of earning for myself and my company have been ruined. Finally no one will compensate the driver for being stuck on the road half the country away from home on a major holiday.
So ask yourself this, in an industry that touches everything at least once from raw material to delivery to where you buy it, and is so vital to our way of life and national security, why would anyone want to get into this career?

The Iowa Caucus Happened
A job offer slides into Rafael’s DMs as he waits to find out if it’ll be a new start or prison on February 8.
Accidental Feminist Icon
Delete the Twitter app, Mr. Barba
“Mister Barba?”
Rafael didn’t like hearing his name from the young woman behind him, especially not given what he’d done. He’d texted Carmen on the first day of the trial, and she’d agreed to look into the offers from attorneys he knew, and some he didn’t, while he sat beside Dworkin and emotionally prepared himself to testify. The ones he’d looked at the night before came from people he didn’t like or were last resorts. He’d moved from his visceral response to finding law to back his actions. Applying logic could let him detangle himself from his conflicted emotions. Catholic guilt wrestled his humanity. That said, he also found himself desperate to introduce Ollie to music as Carmen worked from his apartment that first afternoon, not caring for once as the toddler drooled or sneezed or spilled all over him.
“Yes?” he asked, taking his coffee from the cart. “I’m sorry, have we met?”
“We haven’t. I follow you on Twitter.”
“Ah,” he said, shifting awkwardly. “It’s nice to meet you, Miss-”
“Rachel Sullivan. I have, like, a reading Twitter.”
“I’ve seen that! Read with Rachel? Your icon is a copy of Howl?”
“Yeah,” she nodded, chuckling. “I just- listen, I know it’s bad what’s going on and a lot of people are really hurt and going after you. Do I get it? No. But, I think you didn’t get a good choice, and you did what’s right for you. When it seems impossible, it’s not my place to judge something I can’t fathom. And a lot of people feel the same. A bunch of us have a group chat and we hope everything goes well and you get to start again.”
It was a stark contrast to his interaction with mami or emails from church ladies. There was an acknowledgement of disagreement, but he needed more people to respect that they weren’t there like she did. He also remembered watching his father die, and while he didn’t like the man, he regretted not ending that pain. It only drew out hurt for everyone.
“Thank you, Rachel. That really means the world to me.”
“Good luck today,” she said, giving him a wave when she took her coffee and left. By the end of the day, Rafael hated Peter Stone for being a damn good prosecutor, and he wondered if there were any cases he’d tried, especially the ones before SVU that he was wrong on. He made his way into a new bar, definitely not his usual during all of this, and he sat and drafted his resignation. It took longer than he cared to admit, and he restarted and reread it time and time again. By the time he was drunk, he’d written something he could proofread the next morning and ignored calls from Olivia, Carmen, and mami.
He decided it was time to do what he had been dreading, logging into Twitter. Since Carmen had cleaned it up, more people had found him, and he was able to easily ignore anything hateful by skimming for murder or murderer in the body of the tweet. He skipped those, and Rafael was surprised to see some apathy, sympathy, or respect for his reasoning. Lazily, he scrolled his direct messages. A select few of the people who knew him contacted him with revulsion, but his filtered messages were filled with vitriol. He found Rachel’s account again, following her back and deciding he could break his unspoken rule of only following people he knew or the occasional blog/podcast/museum/celebrity. If anyone contacted him with kindness, he was now more open to the reciprocity of Twitter; no one would be asking him to prosecute their case soon.
He saw a message from Tripp Greene. In Harvard, they’d had an unspoken alliance as the two scholarship kids in their cohort, a silent allegiance that continued into law school. There were very few people Rafael respected personally from Harvard, but Tripp had remained kind, even if he worked in something as ruthless as politics. They’d been reunited by Rafael’s uptick in Twitter popularity. He was more proud than he should be by the potential presidential candidates that had followed him. Rafael should have known Tripp would reach out; he was ever the silent cheerleader and had watched a sibling die on life support when he was at Harvard. They’d discussed the morality of pulling plugs and the selfish desire to keep people alive, though most of it had been Tripp talking and Rafael listening.
While moving to Iowa seemed extreme, he was acutely aware that he would end up haunting the DA’s office and Manhattan SVU like some ghost of ADAs past instead of moving forward. His mother had a boyfriend and looming retirement that seemed likely to take the pair to Miami, where she could play grandma to his grandchildren. There was nothing left for him here but Carmen, and while a great friend, she was not enough to erase the last twenty-one years of his life. When Carmen called for the fifth time that night, he ignored it, but it was quickly followed by Answer the phone or I tell Olivia I haven’t heard from you. With a groan, he answered when Carmen called again sixty seconds later.
“I’m fine. I don’t want to delve back into a play by play of my day.”
“That’s why you’re drunk at seven o’clock,” she said, her tone thick with sarcasm as she pretended that solved everything.
“It’s only been two hours?”
“You’re not at Forlini’s.”
“I’m not hanging out with Stone.”
“Send me your location. I just picked Ollie up from mom’s.”
“Take your son home, Carmen. I’ll be fine.”
“But we could talk about how much I also hate Stone. I’ll even stop and let you grab take out from that Cuban place you like.”
“Deal,” he acquiesced, motioning he wanted to close his tab. “Call me when you’re close.”
“Deal. ETA is about fifteen minutes.”
He polished off his scotch, signing the check and tipping well before taking his briefcase and leaning against the wall as he waited for Carmen’s SUV. She waved at him out the window, and he hurried into her passenger seat. Though he always knew that she was a great secretary and assistant, Carmen was proving to be the friend he needed right now. Olivia, in the few phone calls they had, was unwilling to discuss anything but the case. She was in cop mode, and she talked to him like she could swoop in and fix what he had done. While she thought he didn’t know, she’d talked to McCoy, talked to Stone, talked to anyone who would listen. But what she didn’t understand is that he’d accepted going to prison was a possibility, but it was one he felt was worth it.
“Barba!” he heard from the backseat, smiling softly to see Ollie more awake than he’d expected. He’d seen the boy periodically, mostly during evening handoffs when Carmen’s mother would drop him off so Carmen could take him home. There were a lot of single mothers in his life, and all were exceptional. The last few days, Carmen and Ollie both had spent a lot of time with him. He kept introducing Ollie to music and movies and foods like he could make up for everything Drew wouldn’t experience by making sure Ollie did.
“Oliver!” he smiled, twisting around to smile at him. The boy kicked his leg, and the blue stripe on the rubber of his sneakers lit up. “I like your shoes.”’
“Thanks,” he giggled, kicking again.
“You’re good with him,” Carmen smiled, the navigation now leading her to get his take out.
“He’s a good kid. Noah made me better with kids. Liv said I held him like a sack of flour at first.”
“You’ll be ready by the time you have your own.”
“I work too much.”
“That can change.”
“I don’t deserve to have a child,” he shrugged, and he could see Carmen purse her lips. “I don’t. I wouldn’t be good at it anyway. Wouldn’t be fair. Besides, I might end up like dad. No kid deserves that shit.”
“Bad word!” Ollie scolded, tablet in hand as he watched a movie.
“Sorry, Ollie. Stuff.”
“You’ve never told me what he did.”
“He wanted heterosexual, toxic machismo and got a swarmy, emotional bisexual.”
“You’re not that emotional.”
“He took care of that,” he said darkly. “I used to cry when he went after mami. That turned his attention to me.”
Carmen knew there was nothing she could say, so instead she silently took his hand, squeezing softly. He was taken aback at first, but he kept her hand loosely in his as his head lulled against the headrest. It was strangely grounding, the physical affection. He’d felt like he was swimming the last few days as memories of his father, his father’s death, his childhood, and each case he tried bubbled up. That wasn’t including the vision of baby drew and Maggie in the hospital room that lingered everywhere.
The conflicting guilt and conviction he’d done the right thing also broke a damn and the feelings he’d suppressed- loneliness, guilt, abandonment, distrust- were all bubbling to the surface. He’d spent so much of his life trying not to process them so he could focus on a conviction rate and moving forward that he didn’t have the tools everyone else did sometimes. Right now, Carmen felt like an anchor, and he was grateful for her.
He got out of the car when Carmen parked, ordering enough food for three adults, one take out container containing whatever he thought a toddler could handle. Soon enough, they were settled in his living room and eating, though Ollie had minimal interest in the pork, beans, and rice in front of him. The thought crossed his mind that when he took one of the out of state jobs, he wouldn’t have Carmen there like this. He was sure this friendship would be short lived; when he didn’t need her anymore, she’d leave him. That’s what usually happened, wasn’t it? She just felt bad for him.
“I’m moving to Iowa,” he blurted out before he was able to spiral into the self loathing he’d recently discovered.
“That’s far,” she said, and he thought he could detect sadness in her voice.
“There’s FaceTime.”
“Not quite the same, but I’ll take it.”
“Tripp understands,” he said, sobering up as the food hit his stomach. “He lost a sister. Watched someone dying like with my dad except she’d been born that way. It was years, Carmen.”
“That’s a lot. I’m going to miss you, Rafael. Ollie will too.”
“Come visit. If the tickets are bad, I’ll pay. Or cover renting a car.”
“You’re drunk,” she chuckled.
“Sorry. Best friend. It’s the rules.”
“We’ll come. But I can afford tickets.”
“Promise if it’ll make things tight, you’ll let me. You’re raising a kid. No kids means I can afford to get my friend the occasional plane ticket.”
“Deal.”
“Next week, will it be Des Moines or prison? Who knows! I’ll probably grow a beard either way. Think they’d recognize me in prison if I grow a beard?”
“I’ve never seen you with a beard. Stop shaving and we’ll find out.”
She could see Rafael getting tired, head leaning back against the couch and closing his eyes. She preferred when he joked about all of this. They were stuck waiting, and this time the next night they’d probably know. Ollie climbed between them on the couch, and she realized her boss wasn’t the only one almost asleep.
“You two can stay,” Rafael yawned, hand smoothing Ollie’s curls back.
“You’re sure?”
“Yeah. It’ll be nice not being alone in the morning. And you can stay here to work. We didn’t talk about it, but I know you hate Stone. He’s a good attorney. Doing his job.”
“His job is wrong.”
“That isn’t his fault. If another ADA had done what I did? I’d be prosecuting them.”
“Go get ready for bed,” she chuckled, rolling her eyes. As she scooped Ollie up, she kissed the top of Rafael’s head. “We’ll see you in the morning.”
“Carmen?” She turned in the doorframe. “Thank you. For all of this.”
“I’m glad to, Raf. Promise you’ll actually sleep.”
“I promise.”
“Night, Barba,” Ollie yawned, waving over his mom’s shoulder as they entered his guest room. Maybe Iowa was going to be too far if he didn’t go to prison. He was getting quite fond of having Carmen around quite quickly. He wasn’t going to be her superior anymore, so this friendship could be something he maintained.
Olivia would be a given; even if they were primarily united around work, she was also one of his closest friends and maybe not working together would make him relax. Hell, maybe the end of his life in the city would do it. Rafael couldn’t remember a time he hadn’t felt he was chasing an upward trajectory in New York City. Even at Harvard, the plan had been to return. Maybe coming into Des Moines established would let him feel comfortable just existing.
He liked cooking and reading in the park and going out dancing on occasion. He rarely had time for two options, and the latter made his cheeks red with embarrassment at the prospect of a colleague seeing him during the outing. In Iowa, maybe he could go dancing and take up a new hobby and wear jeans without feeling like something was out of his control.
He woke up before Carmen, excited to be able to cook for her. He appreciated the fact she was happy to help him, but she had paused her own life for the last few days. Their friendship was relegated to offices and dinners by the office. He’d come to her baby shower and birthday parties and even a holiday party, but that was it and that had other colleagues present. Except maybe the baby shower, but he was determined to buy up whatever was left on her registry when the day came, using mami, abuelita, and the older women at church as pseudonyms to pretend he’d just let family know.
“You can cook?”
“I just never had time,” he shrugged, tray coming out of the oven.
“You made pastries?”
“Pastelitos de guayaba.” Carmen didn’t miss how proud he looked as he admired them. They were something he’d always made with family. “They aren’t hard, but abuelita used to make them for me all the time. Puff pastry, sweetened cream cheese and guava paste. Cafe con leche on the way.”
“You couldn’t sleep?” He shook his head, pouring the espresso and adding the milk before placing mugs at the breakfast counter. His mouth was set in a line now, the corners sucked in as he focused on the countertop. Her hand rested on his, giving a squeeze and he rewarded her with a soft smile. “We’ll be helping you pack for Iowa in no time.”
“I hope,” he nodded, biting into a pastry. Ollie came out, eyeing the countertop. “Want one, Oliver?”
“What are they?”
“Delicious,” Carmen groaned, having torn into her own. That was enough for Ollie, who accepted a pastry from Rafael with a soft Thank you before biting into it carefully.
“Wow! It is good!”
“I’m glad you like it.”
It felt a somber affair, despite the pastries, when Carmen saw him off to court. She chose to wait in his apartment, ringer on high and news coverage on. Ollie was easily entertained by the toys she had in the car, and the phones were forwarded to be answerable on her cell phone. By the end of the day, she’d put dinner in his slow cooker and cleaned most everything at least once. And then her phone rang with his ringer. She’d picked one of the other presets for him long ago, and she watched Ollie with his blocks as she answered.
“Rafael?”
“Not guilty,” he exhaled, still unable to believe it as he surveyed his office to begin packing. Her desk was empty, and he didn’t mind today because if she had been here, McCoy would’ve had her helping Stone. Carmen was his assistant, his friend, and it was bad enough to know Stone would probably take his place at work.
“Thank God,” she whispered. “Did you turn the letter in?”
“I put it on Jack’s desk. I’m hoping to be gone buy his return. I think three heavy boxes will cover it. Plus anything I hung, but other than diplomas most of it came with the place.”
“I put dinner on. Ollie and I ran to the store and picked up short ribs and potatoes and carrots. I needed something to do.”
“Nervous you’d be visiting me in prison?”
“You know damn well juries can be swayed. You’ve done it.”
“And I’m safe. I’ll be there in a couple of hours, okay?”
“Okay,” she said softly. “I’m really glad you get to go to Iowa.”

i was SO excited to see that you posted new samwill fic! is there any chance you might write more in the substance of things hoped for series?
Hi there! Thanks for your kind words! I am still kind of laughing to myself over the idea that it’s twenty-fucking-twenty-one and I am picking at TWW fics again. I know I posted screenshot of the dates, but I cannot believe it’s been almost fourteen years to the day since I posted the first one, jesus christ. The wildest part to me is that, since the stories in the Iowa-verse take place in 2017/2018, I was writing about things way in the future when I started and now they are in the past. Will has an MP3 player! No one has a smart phone! It’s wild!
Anyway, that has nothing to do with your question, I’m just obsessed with the passage of time, I guess.
To actually answer your question--I don’t know! I don’t currently have anything cooked up for that series, and there wasn’t necessarily any more of that story that I was considering telling. There’s some vague stuff in my head about how Sam gets hired by Gabe Tillman, but nothing really story worthy and I don’t feel like I left anything dangling, particularly?
(Also, I like that first story SO much and I feel like every subsequent story has taken a little bit away from how good it is on its own, so I don’t want to drain it of any more of its powers, you know?)
I don’t like to promise fic because I am very bad at keeping promises, but things that I am currently picking at are the third big Iowa story where the Iowa Caucus is imminent and their old lives come knocking (old), the story about Will confronting the very bad end of his relationship with Sam during Zoey’s kidnapping (old), a story about missed connections that links into that bit in “Game On” where Will rattles off a list of people Sam has ghosted for (old), something else in the Two Campaign Stops, Three Interviews, and a Haberdashery in Guam universe (old, and I honestly don’t remember what in the hell this was supposed to be, there’s just some dialogue between Sam and Will that I THINK was supposed to be on the night of Sam’s senate election), an Iowa story about marriage (new, sort of--I started one when gay marriage was legalized in Iowa nine hundred years ago, but this would be a new spin on it since the real world ended up shaking out very differently by 2018), an idea based on an unused prompt from the Sam/Will fest I ran on LJ in the dark ages that is basically an AU where Sam comes back to the white house after he loses the 47th and the staff notice that Elsie is hanging around a lot and teasing him and eating the snacks in his desk and borrowing his things and assume he’s dating Elsie, when really he’s been dating Will this whole time and this is actually Elsie’s version of “welcome to the family.” (new)
eta: i can’t believe I shouted out my BFFs patience with my texting and did not add that one of the things I have been texting them about is an Everyone Finds Out story where Will is in a rush and leaves wearing one of Sam’s monogramed shirts and has to try and hide it from everyone all day.
(I also got an ask a while back about President Sam/First Gentleman Will and I’ve been thinking a lot about how much more plausible that seems now, in 2021, than I ever could have imagined in 2006 or whatever. Like, Haberdashery!Sam, who has been out since before he was elected to the 47th and then managed a Senate seat could conceivably run for President. I think the conflict in a story like that is, what role does Will play, especially once Sam is elected? Can he balance spousal expectations and working on Sam’s campaign and then staff?)
ANYWAY, sorry for going on with much more information than you probably wanted, I am just very desperate to talk about dumb Sam/Will things and have no one to really do so with! (Shout out to my BFFs who have been very nice about all the Sam/Will texts they get every night, heh)

It’s 4 am so that means it’s time for a political rant. You’ve been warned.
#RefundWarren is bad and the Bernie supporters who started it should feel bad. And my saying this has nothing to do with which candidate I currently support. Frankly, I’d be happy to see either of them in office. I think they’d both be awesome presidents.
No, I’m saying this because I don’t like bullshit infighting over who said what about whom when and why. This is “but her emailzzz!” 2.0 and no one on the left has apparently learned a goddamned thing since 2016. Not about how 2010s politics work. Not how psyops and information warfare work. Not about how sexism and racism are destroying our political system. Not about anything. Yes, I said this all in an earlier post, but it’s four hours later and I’m still mad that basic electioneering bullshit is the hill that progressives in the US are choosing to die on. I’ll know who to thank if we get four more years of Trump. I mean, who the fuck cares if Trump created concentration camps, nominated an actual rapist to the Supreme Court, doles out offices and favors like candy, cozies up to dictators, and plays chicken with Iran, to name only a few of his crimes, right? /s And who cares if Republican leadership is mostly on his side and may very well just...you know, not try him in the Senate because they really don’t care, do u? Because, oh noooo, Elizabeth Warren may have told a lie about something Bernie Sanders said to her, not that anyone really can know for sure or that this doesn’t happen in every election cycle ever since election cycles began. But hey, look, here’s a tape of Bernie saying that he supports the idea of a woman president! And it’s from 1980 or something, so clearly he could never have said anything different, or said that he doesn’t think a woman can win against Trump. (ETA: I just looked into this matter more deeply and it’s even stupider than I thought. My freaking hell.)
But yes. Let’s cancel Elizabeth Warren because a lie about a competing candidate is the worst thing to happen EVER. And the Kremlin can’t be up this hashtag’s ass and making sure it trends. Impossible! The fact that this is all happening right before the Iowa Caucus? WOW THAT’S NOT A COINCIDENCE! AT. ALL!
I hate this so much. Progressives have to realize something: the GOP is NOT. PLAYING. FAIR. They are also far better organized than they were in 2004 when they didn’t know how the internet worked or that voters under 40 existed and mattered. They’ve been great at coalition-building since before 1980 (you know, when Reagan basically won every electoral vote in the country?). They’re even better at it now. They literally DO NOT GIVE A DAMN if their candidates and leadership are ideologically united. They will put aside their differences (small though they seem these days) and agree to disagree on nearly everything in order to win. They will also do ANYTHING, including treason, to get power. And they will form a bloc to do it because their party and its leadership are rotten to the core and completely unsalvageable, and their only platform these days is “hurt as many disposable people as possible.” And former Republicans with a conscience realize this agenda for what it is and have left the party.
This is what we’re up against, people. They are watching this Warren vs. Sanders nonsense and cheering it on. Because the left is not only getting distracted by it--from impeachment, from a potential war, from literally EVERYTHING Trump and the GOP are doing and the fight ahead of us to get every last one of them out of office--but they are FALLING FOR IT like the fucking dupes they prove themselves to be again, and again, and again, and again.
I am just beyond tired of this bullshit. The GOP and its Nazi friends (but I repeat myself) play realpolitik, y’all. We need to get over our squeamishness with that idea and PLAY IT TOO. And to even get to that point we need to first stop playing purity politics and freaking out over every little unsavory political maneuver Democratic candidate make or are simply rumored to have made.
Deal with your discomfort and keep your damn eyes on the damn prize. Lives are at stake here. The environment is at stake here. The future of the planet is at stake here. Hell, preventing a third world war may be at stake here. If you don’t think players are all lined up for one just like they were in World War One, then I have some very, very bad news for you.
And fuck, stop asking for your donations back. What the actual fuck is that even about? Live with the fact that you made a decision you now regret and move on by donating to Sanders, or working for his campaign, or literally anything else but acting like Warren’s campaign is a cold hamburger you can send back to the kitchen.
I cannot believe I have to say any of this to adults who say they want this country to move forward.

Dear Iowa,
What the fuck?
This letter is, of course, in regards to your utterly ridiculous Iowa caucuses.
For those of you who do not live in Iowa, the Iowa Caucus is not a primary where you go and vote like a normal person. It’s this 3-4 hour hell experience where you go and stand at some designated space in like, idk, a high school gym or some bullshit, under the sign that says, for example, “PETE BUTTIGIEG” if you are a Mayor Pete supporter.
Everyone huddles in their little spots, visible seen. Then they count and if certain candidates don’t have at least 15% of the vote, then the voter intimidation and harassment lobbying begins. People who have at least 15% start going over to the losers and start bothering you until you are convinced to join someone else’s camp.
There’s no privacy. The most aggressive, obnoxious, loudest, energetic supporters have the advantage. Because it takes multiple hours, it is extremely exclusionary. I have progressive MS, for example, I would never be able to endure a 2-4 hour harassment festival in order to vote, and I also value my privacy in the voting booth. This is party-sanctioned voter intimidation that excludes the sick, disabled, and people who can’t spare the time because of work or childcare or other personal responsibilities.
Turnout in caucus states range somewhere between 4-12%.
Turnout in primary states (where you just vote like a normal fucking person) are around 30-40% or higher.
Bernie was right in 2016, the system IS rigged. By caucuses. He just didn’t mention that, because causes were the main source of his delegate haul. He has energetic supporters that are really aggressive. It works for him.
But if you’re not able bodied, don’t have the time, or shit, if you’re just a fucking introvert who just wants to vote quietly in peace, caucuses fucking suck.
And when it comes to a representative democracy, they REALLY fucking suck.
So, Iowa, you wanna be so fucking special and go first every goddamn election year? Vote like normal fucking people, you goddamn corn-fuckers
eta: and not a word out of you New Hampshire tools going ‘but then we won’t be first to VOTE’ because you have like 12 people and 24 cows and you mean nothing to me, suck my Dixville Crotch

Other blogs: ha ha ha. I have many. my main @heckofabecca, my Middle-earth fashion blog @middleearthmodels, my reference blog @heckofaref (for writing, art, and roleplaying), my abandoned Tolkien blog (since I said ‘fuck it’ and stuck to main for that), and a bunch of saved sideblogs I don’t use

Menm jan tou Lafrans te okipe on bon pati nan Etazini ki reprezante jodia 21% nan tèritwa ameriken an. Li fèm mal lè yon Ayisyen oblije chwazi ant ret mouri lakay oubyen al pran imilyasyon anba men etranje, alòske lakay gen dekwa pou nouri tout pitit li. https://www.instagram.com/p/ClbRiMerQD4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
