While the breakup was inevitable (especially if you read the comics), I think the show handled it phenomenally with it being even better than how it was done in the comics. Steven Yeun and Zazie Beetz absolutely killed it in this scene with you really being able to hear the heartbreak in both of their voices as Mark and Amber realize that for as much as they love each other, they can't make this relationship work. Then you have the "I can't live in your world, I want to, but I can't." which👏👏👏. That is some absolute peak writing. I haven't consumed many stories that actually treat the breakup as a heartbreaking moment for both characters involved since it's usually just treated as a minor obstacle to prevent the main romance from happening sooner. While I'm fine with that in some cases, I feel like it's a disservice when the main character's temporary love interest is a genuinely interesting and fun character who has a good rapport with them. In that same regard, it has been a nice change of pace to see characters who do care for each other attempt to make things work and talk about the issues before accepting that what they have just isn't going to work.

It's also a good commentary on the nature of superhero/civilian relationships since while someone like Debbie was able to handle the stress of it, Amber isn't able to do so. And that doesn't make her weak or a pushover, it makes her human because not everyone is built to handle that kind of life and it's totally understandable.

What people seem to overlook about Amber dumping Mark (Invincible)

I think a lot of people don’t get that Mark is a condescending douchebag. Even if he didn’t mean to be.

Here’s the thing.

Amber lost her patience with Mark and makes it clear she doesn’t wanna put up with his BS.

So he tells her that he is a superhero.

...

Fuck that guy. How is that an excuse?

What’s worse is that he expects it to be reason enough for Amber to take him back. This is emotional blackmail, Mark is more or less telling her that she can’t break up with him because he is a superhero who has to fly around doing “important stuff.” Yeah, this really shows Mark’s arrogance. He is saying that what he does is first of all more important than spending time with her. But he is also saying that his heroic work is more important than Amber’s heroic work.

Worst part is that fans of the show agrees with him. Some even says that Amber's soup kitchen work is not that important.

What Amber does is a very heroic act. She is not even 20, and she uses her free time trying to help the homeless and less fortunate. How many can say they do that?

So, yeah. Fuck Mark Grayson. He tries to manipulate Amber into forgiving him and he patronize her and her charity work.

Also, he doesn’t respect her boundaries, INVADING her bedroom by using his powers to fly in through her window.

Even if we are to say that amber is being unfair, and that’s a big if... than Mark gives her more and more reasons to be pissed and not let her come to him if she feels like it.

The scene where mark and amber kinda broke up was so sad. Anissa ruined them.

Honestly, though I have some issues with how the show handles their relationship, I really do like Mark and Amber together?? Like they got to know each other’s interests (seemingly) before they started dating, they have a similar desire to help people but with differing personalities (Amber’s more direct and outspoken while Mark tends to be more avoidant and soft spoken) that can help balance each other out (and it does!! Amber IS willing to give Mark second chances and Amber inspires Mark to try and take direct action to help those who need it in the city!!).

Yeah, they’re having problems with miscommunication, but I’m seeing people either condemning Amber as a selfish bitch (she’s not selfish for wanting her boyfriend to talk to her?? For wanting to be treated as someone who matters to him?? She’s allowed to want to communicate with him instead of him lying to her??) or Mark as, apparently, as bad as his dad (which - Nolan called Debbie a ‘pet’ and hid the fact he was planning on colonizing and enslaving her planet from her. The lies Mark told were bad, yeah, but are nowhere close to the same level. Istg fandom really can’t have any sympathy for two teenagers of color huh). But like, they both made mistakes, and they’re both trying to make up for it!

Mark definitely should have been more honest with Amber about why he had to keep flaking off things (not even telling her his identity - like maybe just saying something like “I have this thing that I really can’t get away from, and it keeps me really busy, so I will probably have to cancel things at times. I’ll do my best to balance everything, but I’m still figuring stuff out. I’d rather not specify what it is right now, because it’s pretty sensitive for my family, but I’m just letting you know the reason I won’t be able to make things or might not have much time.”) And Amber definitely came off as kind of rude when she yelled at Mark for leaving them despite knowing he was Invincible (which, she really didn’t have to tbh. The scene would’ve been just fine if Mark had told her and she had the same angry reaction), and I can see why people didn’t like it when, even when Mark explained things, she was still mad - but honestly, she’s entitled to be. She probably could have been more understanding about all the weight on Mark’s shoulders, but she has a right to be angry about being lied and stood up for so long, just like Mark has a right to keep his own secrets.

Mark was more at fault, but they both made mistakes - ones that I think they’re definitely going to learn from. Now that Mark and Amber don’t have that ‘secret identity’ wall between them, a huge part of what led to these issues with communication is gone, so they can start working with each other to do that better.

I don’t think they should have gotten together so soon after Episode 8 (after everything Mark went through in that episode... jfc, he needs therapy, not a relationship), but I really want them to be endgame. I think Eve is kind of bland, boring, and predictable, and while I get why people ship them, I think Mark and Amber better compliment each other and can help each other grow.

Okay this HAS to be bait. I’ve not seen ONE person hating Amber because she’s black in the show (not saying there aren’t people who don’t like her for that reason). The vast majority of us (including myself) actually was fine with amber, screaming at the tv telling mark to tell her he’s invincible already, until episode 7. When she told mark she KNEW FOR WEEKS he was a superhero, that’s when everybody starting hating her. She most definitely deduced that mark got the holy hell beat out of him and that’s the reason why he missed out on the soup kitchen and was still mad at him. She yelled at him for “running away” while the cyborg was attacking, but she knew he was invincible defending people from the cyborg, one of which was his BEST FRIEND. Her reasoning was so fucking selfish as well. “We’re fighting because you lied to me. You made me feel stupid and not important.” Like he said it’s a SECRET IDENTITY! His identity exposed could put people in danger like William, Debbie, also THIER CLASSMATES. She’s shown him NOTHING that could show you can keep that mother of all secrets. And she gaslights him to think that HE’S in the wrong for not have the common decency to value your relationship over actual human lives?! That’s like a fire fighters wife getting made at him for responding to that emergency blaze at an orphanage instead of having dinner with her. Now I’ll say this about mark, he was NOT ready for this. He couldn’t handle being a superhero AND have a normal routine plus relationship (especially with a normal citizen cause that’s even harder). He handled it with the finesse of a blind greased up monkey climbing a hill. Also I’ve seen tons of amber hate videos and posts, and not ONE have I seen talk about her race being a problem. The writers probably added in the fact she knew his secret to make her look smart, but they ended up making her look like an entitled bitch. To summarize this more bluntly, the fandom doesn’t like amber not because she’s a WOC, it’s because in the show she’s a
