Dont worry, im dropping literally all extra work and focusing purely on playable updates now until i regain your guy's trust in me after being so radio silent.

I also know and recognize that this has gotta be annoying asf since what you guys really want is updates but after what happened with the Total War franchise (my beloved) and their lightning fast content pipeline and lack of upgrading their engine ended up destroying the health of the company and ruining fans trust in em, id rather invest on the long term than short term unlike them (meaning id rather have a set story, narrative line complete, and research resources so that i can use that to run wild in writing).

Hamilton's Night's Dawn books - a world that had very hard wood as its only meaningful export, and was also stuck developing its economy from agriculturalism (due to investment shortages, though).

All this is to say - Hey! What are some foundational inspirations for your sci fi verse? You gotta have some like recommendations of classic or older sci-fi for us, right? What are some of your suggestions of books and authors to read?

OK SO - My sci-fi tastes have sort of ended up in some very specific niches. Growing up, I was a Larry Niven +Jerry Pournelle man, in part because my dad amassed a huge collection of their books - then gave 90% of them away before i was old enough to read them. So one of my teenage missions was rebuilding that library, trash and all!

Stuff like Footfall, Ringworld, Gil "The Arm" Hamilton, Protector (yes i attempted to name a comic series similarly, and paid for it) "The Mote in God's Eye"... you name it, I read fuckloads of these books. And while they tend to land on a sort of human chauvinist "mankind will win based on his inherent adaptive human-ness, and the aliens will fail because of their rigid alien-ness", this shit was very foundational to me.

Their more collaborative series, The Man-Kzin Wars and War World, also loom large in my teenage mind. The Man-Kzin wars are super fun - humans meet a race of tiger-men, and go from being NWO peaceniks to roughneck cat-skinners in a generation! PEACE AND LOVE WONT DEFEAT TIGER MEN!

Similarly, war world (like lots of that 70s/80s military sci fi) was a sort of catch-all for western military nerds to play with their favorite factions - it was a planet where all the un-ruleable ethnic groups and nationalities had been deported by the authoritarian earth government, and left to rot... until a race of genetically engineered fascist super men land on the world, and start trying to rule the place. Pretty fun shit.

As I got older, I turned hard into William Gibson, and read the absolute shit out of both the Neuromancer trilogy and the Bridge trilogy, as well as his short stories. Bruce Sterling was part of that wave for me, too, and I religiously sought his old paperbacks out too. In terms of novels, "Distraction" is my favorite coherent Sterling Novel - though the short stories in the "Schismatrix" novel/collection of his remain my absolute favorite space opera pieces.

At this age, too, I found my top-top fave Sterling Stories - "Taklaman" and "Bicycle Repairman", both gritty pseudo-cyberpunk stories of the highest degree, in this collection:

This thousand-plus page collection of short stories and novellas was basically my bible for a few years - i put sticky notes on each story i loved and meant to return to, until the book was so festooned with sticky note bookmarks i abandoned the practice altogether. If you have the chance, just buy this book and chew on it for a few years.

As i got into my 20s, Charles Stross became my lode star - his books like Accelerando and Glasshouse were total game changers for me. They come with their own peculiarities, but I loved his transhuman/posthuman musings (or at least i was obsessed with his stuff for a good few years - the venn diagram of his obvious interests and my own overlapped enough that his books were great fodder for a growing sci-fi loving brain).

But since then, my main literary squeeze has been the great man, JACK VANCE. Working on Prophet, my friend @cmkosemen made a remark about how much the early issues of the series reminded him of a book series called "Planet of Adventure" or "the Tschai Cycle", by Jack Vance. The book has a beautifully simple setup - a man from an entirely undescribed spacefaring human civilization crash-lands onto a weird planet. But on that planet, he finds four separate civilizations, each who possess a population of enslaved humans, culturally and physically molded to the needs of their masters. And each book of this series covers our generic hero's interactions with each bizarre expoitative culture. I was extremely intrigued.

Soon thereafter, I found my current absolute favorite book - "THE DRAGON MASTERS". A book about an isolated medieval world... which gets visited, once every few generations, by a black pyramid starship, flown by a reptilian race known as the Greph. The greph capture humans to (surprise surprise) breed them into hyper specific slaves... who in turn become Greph-like in their thinking and demeanours. But the last time the BLACK PYRAMID landed, a bunch of angry medieval dudes stormed the thing, blew it up, and captured a bunch of greph... who became the breeding stock for a whole new human world of slave labour. By the time we meet this planet, the two rival lords of the human-populated regions have been breeding greph slave warriors, or "dragons", for generations, for combat against one another. But soon, the black pyramid will return...

I love this book I even spent a good few months during covid talking with the Vance Estate and several publishers about developing it into a graphic novel, but nobody could quite agree on how it could get made with old Simon getting a paycheque... so sadly it fell apart. There are concept drawings floating around my patreon and other corners of the internet. But one day I'll use 'em...

My other favorite books of his, to name a couple of the MANY books of his I love:

THE BLUE WORLD: A caste system of humans, descended from a crashed prison ship, live on floating settlements on an ocean planet, paying protection to a giant long-lived intelligent crustacean. But one man is tired of giving up all his crops to this tyrannical megafauna...

But there are heaps more, and I love most (thought not all) of the ones i've read. They're generally short, concise, and full of all sorts of bizarre bullshit.

The Indian state has already begun to evict indigenous communities from their homes. In late 2020, tribal communities received notice that labeled their homes as illegally occupying forest land. Their homes were demolished. This bears an eerie resemblance to Israel's targeting of Bedouin communities of Naqab, where Israel gave the lands of these communities to Jewish settlers and the military. The logic of Bedouin dispossession was premised on the fact that as nomads, they had no right to the land.

In Kashmir, these communities were living on lands that the Indian state wanted to use for the development of tourist infrastructure. Part of the plan is to transfer agricultural land to Indian state and private corporations. Kashmir has already lost 78,700 hectares of agricultural land to non-agricultural purposes between 2015–19. This decline in agricultural land—which a majority of Kashmiris still rely upon as the foundation of their economy—will disempower farmers, result in a loss of essential crops, make Kashmir less agriculturally self-sufficient, and create grounds for economic collapse in the near future. It is of course, only when Kashmiris are economically devastated that India's job in securing their land will be made even easier.

Alongside the destruction of agricultural land, the Indian government has also been charged with "ecocide" in Kashmir, which, "masked under the development rhetoric . . . destroys the environment without care, extracting resources and expanding illegal infrastructure as a way of contesting the indigenous peoples' right of belonging and using the territory for their own gain." During the lockdown in late 2019, the valley saw unprecedented forest clearances. In June 2020, the Jammu & Kashmir Forest Department became a government-owned corporation, allowing it to sell public forest land to private entities, including to Indian corporations. The rush to secure and extract Kashmir's resources has typically come at an immense cost to the region's vulnerable ecology, prompting local activists' fears that a lack of accountability will almost certainly exacerbate the climate crisis in South Asia. Just as Israel has secured control over Palestinian resources, India's stranglehold of Kashmir's natural resources and interference with the environment will ultimately make Kashmiris dependent on the Indian state for their livelihoods.

All of these shifts in land use reflect the "Srinagar Master Plan 2035," which "proposes creating formal and informal housing colonies through town planning schemes as well as in Special Investment Corridors," primarily for the use of Indian settlers and outside investors. The innovative program focuses on a broad range of needed research, education and Extension solutions – from addressing agricultural workforce challenges and promoting land stewardship to addressing climate change impacts in agriculture and filling critical needs in food and nutrition.

“Agriculture is facing a multitude of complex challenges,” said Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, USDA Chief Scientist and Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics. “We need all hands on deck developing creative, sustainable and strategic ways to feed, clothe and fuel future generations.”

The $10 million awards are for coordinated agricultural projects (CAPs), which are larger-scale and longer-term investments that integrate research, education and Extension efforts. These projects promote collaboration, open communication, information exchange and reduce duplication efforts by coordinating activities among individuals, institutions, states and regions.

“These research investments support exciting projects that integrate innovative systems-based thinking, methods and technologies to establish robust, resilient, and climate-smart food and agricultural systems,” said NIFA Director Dr. Manjit Misra. “These visionary projects will improve the local and regional supply of affordable, safe, nutritious and accessible food and agricultural products, while fostering economic development and rural prosperity in America.”

At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Erin Silva is leading a collaboration with the Great Lakes Intertribal Food Coalition, the Wisconsin Tribal Conservation Advisory Council, and the Menominee Nation on a transdisciplinary project that aims to scale up traditional Indigenous food production practices — practices that for generations have already been climate-smart and sustainable — by expanding production, processing, storage, and distribution systems, as well as education and Extension programs, that are needed to support integrated crop-livestock systems, cover crops, and rotationally-grazed cattle and pastured chickens.

At the University of Maine, Dr. Hemant Pendse is leading an integrated research, education and Extension effort to advance the bioeconomy by developing biorefinery technologies that will make the millions of tons of available low-grade woody biomass – which currently has a very limited market – more commercially viable in both the sustainable aviation fuel and fish feed sectors.

At Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Dr. Muthu Bagavathiannan is leading a project that seeks to transform cotton production in the southern United States into a more sustainable, climate-smart enterprise by applying improved precision management practices to increase carbon sequestration and reduce greenhouse gas emissions; enhance pest control, and nutrient and water management; and address labor challenges while creating new market opportunities.

AFRI, which also makes grants in the Foundational and Applied Sciences and Education and Workforce Development program areas, is designed to improve plant and animal production and sustainability, and human and environmental health. Grants are available to eligible colleges, universities, and other research organizations.

The Survivor Species: The Camel. (Washington Post)

The camels had thump-thumped for seven days across northern Kenya, ushered by police reservists, winding at last toward their destination: less a village than a dusty clearing in the scrub, a place where something big was happening. People had walked for miles to be there. Soon the governor pulled up in his SUV. Women danced, and an emcee raised his hands to the sky. When the crowd gathered around an enclosure holding the camels, one man said he was looking at “the future.”

The camels had arrived to replace the cows.

Cows, here and across much of Africa, have been the most important animal for eons — the foundation of economies, diets, traditions.

But now grazable land is shrinking. Water sources are drying up. A three-year drought in the Horn of Africa that ended last year killed 80 percent of the cows in this part of Kenya and shattered the livelihoods of so many people.

In this region with the thinnest of margins, millions are being forced to adapt to climate change — including those who were now drawing numbers from a hat, each corresponding to one of the 77 camels that had just arrived in Samburu County.

The regional government had purchased the camels from traders near the border with Somalia, at $600 per head. So far 4,000 camels, as part of that program, have been distributed across the lowlands of the county, speeding up a shift that had already been happening for decadesacross several other cattle-dependent parts of Africa. A handful of communities, particularly in Kenya and Ethiopia, are in various stages of the transition, according to academic studies.

The global camel population has doubled over the last 20 years, something the U.N. agency for agriculture and investment attributes partly to the animal’s suitability amid climate change. In times of hardship, camels produce more milk than cows.

Many cite an adage: The cow is the first animal to die in a drought; the camel is the last.

“If there was no climate change, we would not even bother to buy these camels,” said Jonathan Lati Lelelit, the governor of Samburu, a county about 240 miles north of Nairobi.“We have so many other things to do with the little money we have. But we have no option.”

Authorities had selected the recipients, those crowding around the camels, on the conditionthat they use the animal for milk, not meat. They were also those judged by local officials to be the most in need. They had stories of near-total cattle losses, of walking miles to find water, of violent run-ins with a neighboring tribe as they strayed farther from their territory in search of grazing space for their faltering livestock.

On August 27, African faith, farming, and environmental leaders came together to launch an unusual statement. Their open letter was addressed to “the Gates Foundation and other funders of industrial agriculture.” It charged these funders with promoting a type of corporate, industrial agriculture that does not respect African ecosystems or agricultural traditions.

The letter was organized by the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI), and has over 150 signatories. Its release was timed to influence the Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali, which starts today. Partners of this conference include the Rwandan government, AGRA, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other philanthropies, agribusiness companies, and aid organizations.

The open letter takes particular aim at two linked organizations. The Gates Foundation is primarily known for its public health investments, but has also made major inroads into agriculture. In Africa much of this work extends through the Nairobi-based AGRA (previously known as the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa). The Gates Foundation is a cofounder and the largest donor to AGRA. Other large donors include the UK and US governments.

Under a basket of policies dubbed the “green revolution,” AGRA, the Gates Foundation, and likeminded institutions have sought to substantially increase the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and commercial seeds in Africa. This has centered on developing new seeds and a network of sellers. The aim has been to dramatically increase agricultural output, in order to reduce hunger and elevate farmer incomes.

But by AGRA’s own admission, it failed in its goal to double crop yields and incomes for 30 million farmers by 2020. In fact, some critics argue, AGRA has made things worse.

According to an external assessment by Timothy A. Wise of Tufts University, severe hunger in AGRA countries increased by 30% between AGRA’s founding and 2018. Crop yield increases have been modest, and where they exist, they haven’t always been enough to cover the higher cost of farming with commercial seeds and agricultural inputs. Dependence on fertilizer has increased the debt and financial precarity of the small farmers who make up the majority of farmers in Africa. In some cases the limited yield increases have also been temporary, as soil fertility has diminished due to monoculture farming and fertilizer use. For instance, Ethiopian farmers “will say that the soil is corrupted, meaning it cannot produce food” without synthetic fertilizer, reports Million Belay of the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA).

There have been knock-on effects, Belay says. For instance, Zambian farmers who have become indebted, due to synthetic fertilizer purchases, have had less money for food and their children’s education.

In other words, many farmers’ families are poorer and hungrier than before, while the land itself is less productive.

While AGRA hasn’t managed to double farmer income and yields, it has succeeded in shifting government policies for the worse, according to Belay. These include the dilution of regional biosafety regulations and fertilizer regulations, Belay says. In Kenya, farmers can now face prison time for saving or sharing seeds.

A new AFSA briefing note states that AGRA is seeking to place consultants within government offices and “directly crafting policies at the continental, national, and local levels.” This includes a new 10-year policy for agricultural investment in Zambia.

All, in all, it’s a highly commercialized, elite, and often rich-world vision of African agriculture. Tim Schwab writes in The Bill Gates Problem: Reckoning with the Myth of the Good Billionaire, “Rarely, however, do the targets of Gates’s goodwill, the global poor or smallholder farmers, have a seat at the table. In the case of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, or AGRA, the allies include a bevy of corporate partners: Syngenta, Bayer (Monsanto), Corteva Agriscience, John Deere, Nestlé, and even Microsoft.” AGRA has been criticized for aiding its agricultural partners to expand in Africa.

A road accident

There are several reports about Napoleon in his youth occasionally playing the coachman, which resulted in some severe accidents. The “Cahiers” of Brun de Villeret also contain a similar event, but with Soult on the coach box and happening much later, after the Empire, in 1825 under the Bourbon regime.

By this time, both men had mostly retired to their natal villages, Brun to Villeret close to Malzieu in the Lozère, and Soult to Saint-Amans in the Tarn. Brun, never very wealthy, was looking for means to improve his finances and considered starting a manufactury in his hometown. For that purpose, he visited with the Soults for six weeks. Soult in 1821 had sold his luxurious (and much beloved) country estate from the time of the Empire, Villeneuve l’Étang, to the Duchess of Angouleme and had apparently successfully invested that money in several factories in the South. After Brun had had everything shown to him by his old marshal in detail, he thought about setting off for his home again.

I was about to bid farewell to my hosts and their pleasant valley of Saint-Amans, when I found myself detained by an accident which almost cost the life of myself and the Duke of Dalmatia.

He had offered to take me to Mazamet in a tilbury that he drove himself.

Mazamet being a small town about 10 kms from Saint-Amans, where Soult had founded and continued to encourage the foundation of several manufactories (quite a novelty in that poor, mostly agricultural region).

And a tilbury being a carriage, known for its light build and excellent springs, and looking like this:

He was chatting absent-mindedly, and all of a sudden he slammed into one of those enormous marble milestones that mark the leagues in the south of France. The elasticity of the springs threw us both into the air at a height of more than eight feet. The marshal fell two toises [1 toise = ~2 m] from the carriage and was struck down: one whole side of his right thigh turned as black as his hat. As for me, my destination was less distant, and I found myself astride the edge of the tilbury, one leg in the carriage, and the other engaged between the wheel, the frame, the axle and the footboard. My foot reached the ground, but the carriage had not tipped over and the horse had resumed its very brisk pace. And the wheel, rubbing against my leg, was causing me such pain that I had every reason to fear that it would shatter it. However, I tried to free myself and when I succeeded, I found myself with several abrasions and my boot all torn. I had covered more than five hundred toises without being able to stop the horse, as the reins, having escaped from the marshal, had gone forward. By stretching out I managed to catch them again. When I was clear, I went to find my travelling companion who was hobbling along behind me, leaning on his piqueur.

Who apparently also had been of the party and had been thrown off? Seems a bit weird on a single horse… Not sure if there is another possible translation. Or maybe the man had followed them on horseback?

On our way home, we were supposed to attend a big dinner party and, concealing our accident, we began to brace ourselves. But our paleness and suffering gave away our secret. It was suggested that we go to bed and, for my part, I was very happy to return to my bed and my appartment.

So, the two dignified gentlemen, after having almost gotten themselves killed, pretend that all is fine and nothing happened and are immediately found out – by Madame Soult, I presume? 😁

Who then sends them to bed. Without dinner.

I feel like Brun phrased that “for my part, I was happy”, deliberately like that 😁. Monsieur le Maréchal who had managed to overlook a huge road sign may for once have been at the receiving end of a lecture.

"Many outlets engaging in Israel advocacy are discussing the rampant hypocrisy and double standards applied against Israel in the current war, but few are discussing facts from not-too-distant history.

Critical facts commonly cited during the first Gaza war in 2008 are no longer heard. Worse still, most media outlets deliberately distort many items or report them without necessary context. The most egregious examples of these are those that attribute intention of genocide or ethnic cleansing to Israel.

Fact #1: Israel unilaterally pulled out of Gaza in 2005 to advance peace. Multiple, fully established agricultural communities were uprooted from their homes for this cause.

Fact #2: Gazans destroyed the agricultural infrastructure left for them and voted in Hamas as their government in 2006, which then proceeded to build a terrorist enclave.

Fact #3: The blockade of Gaza’s border crossings is as much Egypt’s responsibility as it is Israel’s. Egypt controls a major crossing into the Gaza Strip – the Rafah Crossing – but has blockaded it since Hamas forcibly wrested control of Gaza in 2007 via a civil war with Fatah. As an aside, surely a country whose citizens are not regularly attacked and murdered from Gaza (Egypt) has a greater moral obligation to open its Gaza border than a country whose citizens are regularly attacked and murdered from Gaza (Israel).

Fact #4: Hamas and Islamic Jihad have infiltrated the UNWRA camps, as documented by the Nahum Bedein Center based on rigorous investigative reporting of Arabic media. UNWRA textbooks glorify Dalal Mugrahbi (a female terrorist who murdered 38 Israelis), rockets are fired from UNWRA refugee camps, and key UNWRA administrative positions are held by Hamas/Islamic Jihad officials.

Fact #5: Gaza could easily minimize civilian casualties if it had bomb shelters. Gaza does not have bomb shelters, however, because Hamas does not value life and chooses not to build them. The miles upon miles of concrete terror tunnels provide ample evidence that Hamas had the resources to build bomb shelters if desired.

Fact #6: Fewer civilians die in Israel because Israel invests significantly in protecting her civilians. Civilian deaths in Gaza are a tragic loss of life; they also mostly stem from Hamas using them as human shields, most blatantly illustrated by the hospital attack last week which US intelligence concluded was a Hamas/Islamic Jihad failed rocket launch. Relatedly, unlike any other army, Israel frequently provides advance warning to its attacks. The fact remains that the casualties in Gaza-Israel conflicts represent one of the lowest civilian:terrorist death ratios of all recent global conflicts.

Fact #7: If the people who speak out against Israel now cared about Palestinians, they ought to have spoken out against Syria’s murder of Palestinians. Or against Hamas’s execution of Gazan people. Or against the undemocratic cancellation of elections in the PA and Gaza (Abbas is in the 18th year of a 4-year term).

Fact #8: If all the people who now speak out against Israel cared about Muslims and genocide, they would speak out against the ongoing genocide of Uyghurs by China or the Rohingya by Myanmar.

Fact #9: There is no genocide in Gaza, much less so in Israel or the PA. Raphael Lemkin, who introduced the concept to international law, defined it as “signifying a coordinated plan of different actions aiming at the destruction of essential foundations of the life of national groups, with the aim of annihilating the groups themselves.” Israel has never engaged in such an approach.

The Palestinian population has grown five-fold over the last 70 years. That is the exact opposite of what genocide aims to do.

Palestinians and Arabs throughout Gaza, the PA, and Israel own property that is not disputed. That is the exact opposite of what genocide aims to do.

Fact #10: The 2021 land dispute in Sheikh Jarrah/Shimon HaTzaddik, and other similar land disputes, have zero connection to genocide or ethnic cleansing. To begin with, the only people with ownership titles of that property are Jews. One can argue the case’s merits or lack thereof, the validity of squatter’s rights, other relevant legal aspects or even the question of timing. The critical point here is that it was a civil dispute between two parties who, after failing to reach an agreement, brought the case to a civil court. There was zero involvement of Israel as a nation or the Israeli government in this case. The terms ethnic cleansing or genocide are only relevant when actions are taken by one nation/people against another nation/ethnicity, not actions taken by private citizens (which, incidentally, many of their fellow countrymen are opposed to).

There are many aspects of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict which are complex.

The savagery of Hamas’s rule in Gaza and the corresponding morality of Israel’s defense against its massacre, however, is pretty straightforward. As is the perverse usage of “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” in contemporary discourse surrounding Israel."

Global shocks have revealed the fragility of our food systems and the pressing need for increased investment in food security. This is particularly true in Africa.

Africa is the region worst affected by hunger, with more than one in five people chronically under-nourished in 2021. Recent shocks from the war in Ukraine and increasingly severe impacts from climate change are making this situation worse. IFAD’s regional teams are seeing up to a doubling of food, fuel, and fertilizer prices compared to 2021. This threatens to undermine food security and agricultural productivity in the present, and recovery in the future. Small farms deserve particular attention. The vast majority of Africa’s farms are under two hectares and account for most of the food consumed by the continent’s most vulnerable populations.

Humanitarian response is essential, but it is not a long-term solution. The financing gap between long-term resilience building and short-term emergency food assistance is significant and rising. This undermines the ability of poor rural people to cope with future shocks. We need to tackle the underlying factors of food insecurity to avoid recurring crises, and to tap into Africa’s significant potential to produce food for itself– and for others.

IFAD is calling for more finance and investments in Africa’s food systems, innovations that reorient towards fairer outcomes, and that fuel jobs and harness the potential of Africa’s youth. A simple cost-benefit analysis would show that it costs less to invest in resilience and prevent a crisis, than it does to launch a large-scale emergency response. Furthermore, studies show that investing in agriculture is significantly more effective in reducing poverty than investment in any other sector.

Through our work on the ground, we see that investing in fair and sustainable food systems can transform small-scale farms into sustainable agribusinesses. This builds local production capacity and improves Africa’s food sovereignty. It creates jobs along the value chain, particularly in processing, transport, and marketing. When rural economies are thriving, they offer opportunities for decent work. Migration becomes a choice, not a necessity, and the foundation is laid for better livelihoods, resilience, and peace.

More than half of IFAD’s core resources go to sub-Saharan Africa, and we are working on innovations in food systems financing, including with the World Bank, and significantly scaling up partnerships with the Green Climate Fund.

In the wake of the war in Ukraine, IFAD launched a Crisis Response Initiative (CRI) to protect the livelihoods and productive assets of small-scale farmers.

Bringing more and fairer investments into African food systems requires innovation and commitments from Governments, the private sector, and international partners. This is where I see room for leaders to focus their attention. New research indicates that transforming African food systems is estimated to require $77 billion a year until 2030–$614billion in total. The demand for IFAD’s work and financing is far greater than the level of commitments. In 2023, IFAD will be presenting this investment case to its Member States to scale up through the Fund’s next replenishment.

By taking a medium- to long-term development perspective, leaders can target the root, underlying causes of food insecurity and build resilience to future shocks. Doing this successfully in Africa would be a huge step in ending global hunger and transforming food systems globally. IFAD will continue to champion this cause.

Douala, Cameroon's main city and commercial hub, is a thriving metropolis recognized for its port, industry, and dynamic commerce. METHODOLOGY

Mercer's 2024 rating methodology included 226 cities from five continents. It compared the expenses of more than 200 products in each area, including accommodation, transportation, food, clothes, home goods, and entertainment. To guarantee consistency in city-ranking comparisons, New York City was used as a baseline, and currency fluctuations were assessed against the US dollar.

The numbers included in Mercer's cost comparisons are from a study done in March 2024 that included over 400 cities. Calculations and baselines were based on exchange rates at the time as well as data from Mercer's worldwide basket of goods and services (used in its Cost of Living Survey).
