introvert limbo (sorta vent post?)

I made it up, but "introvert limbo" is, as an introvert, where you, an introvert TRYING to socialize for the first time, just awkwardly stand in the middle of a very active conversation-- typically with two other people-- could be more, but the whole point is that, even if you want to, you somehow can't find a way to be part of the conversation, no matter how hard you try.

i keep going into the introvert limbo and it sucks. i want to talk to them, and i tried, but i get one reply and them I'm just nothing again. like i was never there.

it's not really like hell, because as an introvert, I'm perfectly fine not talking to anyone. but it's a limbo because I'm in between hell and heaven. heaven being, "great! you don't have to talk to anyone!" and hell being, "they probably just don't like you and don't want to talk to you".

for me, I don't understand why I'm still stuck in limbo.

why am i stuck? why can't i get over it and move on? why is this so fucking difficult?

gazes tend to stick to him like webbing, something which he cannot wait to be free from. people muttering about if he really is the wolverine they’ve been hearing about; the new guy who’s gonna pick up the mantle of their precious Logan.

it’s a lot, and most nights he tries to drown it out with whiskey. in the darkness of the bar he gets lost in the shadows and people leave him alone. the last place he can be anonymous.

except…

you’re always there. staring.

behind the bar and barely saying a fucking word… but eyes always heavy on him.

oh it gets right under his skin. makes him itch.

you hardly ever speak, even when serving customers. he’s maybe heard you string together a grand total of five words from your pretty little mouth (which he tries to tell himself he doesn’t fixate on). still drives him crazy that, when you’re not busy, you never stop looking at him.

what do you want? are you a fan? desperate for his autograph, have him sign a fucking eight-by-ten for you? maybe if that were the case you’d snap a picture on your phone… but you never do.

you just watch.

he doesn’t know what to make of it and you never make an effort to get closer, so the two of you are trapped in this strange limbo of silence and staring. one night, when the bar is quiet and he’s feeling particularly mean after a day of being harassed, he calls you out on it.

“y’know, you never stop fuckin’ staring at me. why? this place ain’t a fuckin’ zoo.”

you’re busy counting his change from the register. his accusation momentarily flusters you and you drop the coins, sighing as you have to pick them up with shaking fingers. he feels a little bad about that.

a little.

you mutter something under your breath in response. he doesn’t catch it.

“what?”

“h’nsome…”

the look he gives you suggests he still doesn’t totally understand. you shift uncomfortably.

“I think you’re handsome.”

he wasn’t expecting that. those four words send him reeling. you mistake his silence for anger.

“I’ll stop. sorry.”

Logan feels suddenly pretty terrible, an emotion not unfamiliar to him.

“no, it’s… fine.” you shift under his words, still clearly shaken and shy, “you don’t know who I am, do you?”

you look bemused.

“should I?”

oh, heaven. an angel from heaven. no ulterior motive. you just like looking at him.

maybe that’s okay.

Logan sits on one of the old, battered stools at the bar. he catches the smile you try to hide.

“Logan,” he says by way of introduction. you tell him your name, and there’s no obscuring the grin on your face this time.

Realization

If you didn't know, the Limbo and Alan Au isn't the only AU/Story I have going on.

Alongside them, there is:

Peace and Its Shadow: A Wings of Fire Fanfic featuring Peacemaker, a magically constructed dragon who accidentally murdered the dragonet he loved and is forced to keep that secret hidden(alongside dealing with other more physical threats).

Now, after some thought, I realized something—holy moly. All three protagonists(Speed, Catnap/Theodore, as he's one of the main ones, and Peacemaker) need therapy, but Peacemaker and Darkstalker could also be argued to be the most mentally alright and sane duo, which is saying quite a bit.

Essentially, this is the group:

Speed -- an Orphaned Veteran who is now immortal. Probably killed a couple mons.

Alan -- Original timeline Speed who accidentally erased his world after losing everything.

Peacemaker -- Abused, magically constructed dragon who's decent as getting away with murder

Darkstalker -- Had near all-powerful magic and wasted it to try and FAIL at committing genocide of a specific tribe he hated after 2000 years of being sent to sleep by the dragon he loved.

Catnap -- 7-year-old orphan potentially manipulated by imaginary friend/false God and later turned to a purple, drug dealing monster. Contributed to the mass slaughter of every worker in the factory and later committed war crimes, probably more than once.

An interaction between the three would be interesting as two of them have their ghost-like companions(Catnap/Theo doesn't, as HAND is just an ability he has constructed from the feeling of abandonment he felt from his "God").

If they were stuck in the same room, Speed and Peacemaker would get along decently as Speed(being in a Pokemon world with no human beings) had already encountered large creatures, so a dragon from Wings of Fire wouldn't be that different. Speed would even start behaving like an older brother to Peacemaker the closer they got. I imagine that Peacemaker is 5-6 years old(which in human standards would be 15-16). It would make him a similar age to Speed, which is around that, too.

Though admittedly, ages are weird between the three are weird as Catnap over here could be argued that he is either stuck at 7 years old, 15 years old if he started as the body of Catnap, 22 years old if it's all combined, or just perhaps ageless.

Regardless, Peacemaker and Speed would interact fine, but both would think there's something odd with the other(Alan and Darkstalker). If Alan and Darkstalker were able to see each other, they'd...awkwardly stand and stare as Alan couldn't care less about Darkstalker, anything he's done, or any victim of it, while Darkstalker isn't sure what to think of this small yet very threatening creature(he has the aura of an all powerful monster).

Catnap, being anti-social and introverted, would prefer to just be left alone, and he would rather not talk at all. Occasionally, he would throw a small comment in, but if the other two got too close, Catnap would threaten them with the use of HAND(or the many hands he hands the ability has) or with red sleeping gas that he can administer through his mouth.

coming into 2025 i want to say i’m so grateful for joining a community so incredibly warm and welcoming and creating friends and feeling myself come out of my introverted bubble to make fandom friends for the first time in probably a decade. bucktommy got me out of a rut i’d been in for so long, a ship that finally spoke to me after spending so long in fandom limbo. they brought me so much joy and gave me so many new friends. of course want to shoutout the 20 tommy fans (iykyk) for being a source of my everyday giggles and tomfoolery. you all love me no matter how weird and freaky i get in there (and i love you all just the same) and i want to just thank the entire bucktommy community as a whole for being one of the best fandoms i’ve ever been a part of and no matter how much shit we took and still continue to take we keep going and keep having fun no matter what. here’s to another year 🎉🍾

okay, I'm crowdsourcing advice for a minute, so bear with me and please lend some words if you have any:

I want to get out of the house more. Like, on a regular basis. Weekly, maybe. Preferably, I would like to be interacting with people—the same people—every time, for... like... accountability, but also because I am hoping to put myself out there as the 21st century's most neurotic platonic Casanova. Uh. Making a friend or more out of this would be desirable. But I think if I go out with the intention of making a friend, I will be disappointed.

So. I want to go do something, for that something's own sake. I don't want to go be fake once a week hoping to get a friend out of it.

However, the beautiful state of Iowa is a bit cultureless, and I am too introverted and easily overwhelmed for this world (e.g. going to bars is probably not gonna be my thing). So.... (opening note that everything below is truly unedited, i know i say that every time but i get very anxious about editing my thoughts so i typically do go back-- this time, i probably will later but i really don't have much time to spare right now so if this has typos that's why! i'm sorry :c hope it's understandable)

okay hi! first of all thank you so much! i'm quite proud of it :)

i'll open this by stating that i am really not the best at articulating points about Dan, Phil, and marriage; there are many impressive theories/metas out there from incredible folks in the community, which i have lovingly absorbed (feel free to promo off this post if this is you!). but i am a very indecisive person who tends to waver on my thoughts in this subject, and i've not found myself as excitable about the latest hints they've left in this video. so, hopefully it's okay if i use your ask as an excuse to kind of... sandbox around my messy thoughts in this ballpark, and hopefully give you an apt response to your question along the way!

i said before that i waver on my thoughts about Dan, Phil, and marriage, but in actuality, i do have loose thoughts which i have stuck to, which is that i think there have been several past proposals. the following theory operates off of the idea that Phil was the one to propose; i don't necessarily think he's more or less inclined towards proposals exactly, but it kind of works better for what i have envisioned possibly happening. when i discuss this i will try to stay neutral on who does what, but that's important context especially around proposal two.

i joined the phandom in the very tail-end of the pre-II era; by the time i was really immersed approximately a year or two into discovering them, they began the promotion of interactive introverts. because of this, i really have spotty knowledge of their 'prime years' around TATINOF, etc. but i think, across their travels (possibly in Japan?) and during that period of massive fame-- where they were experiencing more security financial and in their careers, as well as becoming better situated in each other's lives off camera-- the first proposal occurred. and ultimately, regardless of who proposed to who, i think this proposal was rejected. certainly, they had a better handle of their images, but this was before Dan had disclosed his mental health to the public; this was before a proper rebrand of his content, even. Phil, similarly, had several issues i can imagine he was juggling at the time, and beyond all else-- the two of them were closeted. their flat had been located, their shipping wasn't at its max exactly but the eyes on them had risen exponentially, if they got married in any kind of formal way that would be largely problematic. 2015 was not ready for Dan and Phil, the people who literally brought YouTubers to the big stage, the golden boys in this strange collab limbo, and a well known duo act-- to actually get married.

so they resolve that, because they know each other well enough to communicate about that sort of thing, and the idea gets shelved. they move into their new flat, which they have secured to be a private space. Dan has rebranded and is opening up about his mental health, Phil has done his own stylistic rebrand, and we are approaching the II era. interactive introverts is a success, the gaming channel goes on hiatus, and Dan has decided to begin working on his coming out video. this is when, in what i imagine to be a much more casual conversation, the question gets put forward: maybe, now, marriage is a safer thing.

and it is, in some ways, but there's still more to unravel here. Dan was, for the first time, out to not only the entire world but also his close family. Phil-- who i worry sometimes has his own story understated at this point-- had been out to a few people but had undeniably been nervous to come out to everybody, too. they had a lot to explore, with this newfound freedom.

commitment and change were crowning points of this era, for Dan and Phil respectively (though, obligatory note that humans are multifaceted and they share a close life together, so both of them mutually did experience both phenomena). working in reverse: Phil would begin to experience, gradually, the onset of a chronic illness. he also had this ambiguous future ahead, as he tried to adjust to the lack of Dan in his public work-- only for COVID to arrive. his anxiety problems were increasingly going from something he could willfully avoid to something he needed to address, and that is a massive adjustment on its own. there were a lot of background changes happening with Phil, even as his content appeared to be the same-- a commitment he hadn't given up.

Dan is, in a lot of ways, the opposite of this. both Dan and Phil had committed to living in their two-flat situation together, but they were planning to move in with one-another throughout 2020. this happens amidst COVID, which crushes a lot of post-coming out plans Dan had both personally and professionally. YouTube systemically destroys his creative visions through bureaucracy and arguable exploitation of his image, and when you rewatch his video explaining this, you realize that he briefly mentions the fact that the sheer financial commitment he had to his dream work prompted him to talk to Phil and describe delaying the purchase of their house. Dan's whole life has involved commitment-- being with Phil, in its own right, has been that, as well as the BBC gig, tour work, etc.-- but you can see this conflict become pivotal as so many of these commitments tie themselves to a part of his very self, and then are ripped away from him. Dan was not ready to get married.

... so, cut to now. see, everything above that i described is very lazily speculative, which i sort of hate for a meta because i feel a rush that desires total accuracy, but i simply can't track all the different moments where a marriage was plausible, all the different hints and signs. what i do think is that there was a serious marriage attempt early in their lives, and then a second casual conversation in a very not-casual situation. where does this leave us now?

Dan and Phil are in a very fresh era of their lives, distinctive from anything of the past. they are out, collaborating together, rebranding themselves gradually into something more fitting to their core artistic identities, and fostering a close community with their audience. Dan is making a severe sequence of commitments here, but these are worth the risk-- bringing back the gaming channel was conditional on the fact that Dan was making a choice he could back out of, but he chose to commit to the channel through committing to his own happiness. Phil is going through a lot of his own changes as he comes to terms with his medical state, as well as his appearance changes and the shifts in confidence it brings. Phil embraces the seismic change that is the end of the hiatus, because for the first time in a while, it's not a bittersweet change or a change laced in uncertainty-- it's a good change.

and, really, it's been fifteen years since they first met, five years since they first came out. what better time is there for something like this?

honestly, i don't know if it's happened yet. i personally don't envision Dan and Phil to approach marriages all that typically; they are chained together, as Dan put it once, in really every facet of their life already. i do believe that both of them like the concept of a wedding but also hate every mini-concept that goes into a wedding, so i really can't imagine that happening.

but i think maybe all these wedding references are emerging for a couple of reasons: namely, to prime us for the idea of them possibly being married (or to tease us for our theorizing, who knows with them), and also subconsciously to prepare themselves. because a proposal isn't just going to be a casual conversation anymore-- it might not be fancy, the way they first did their proposal, in a traditional speech & kneel format somewhere in a beautiful city. but it's not like their second one, halfway through the first okay day in a string of stressful ones, sitting in an apartment packing up their things.

maybe this is Phil bringing up marriage terms in videos, smiling when his family refers to Dan as part of the Lester family (even though really, Phil, they've been doing that for years), thinking about the aesthetics of WAD and wondering if a black-and-orange ring is a little too much. maybe this is Dan calling Phil pet names more often, daydreaming about himself in a dress but realizing he wants to see Phil in a veil more, fully accepting that he does not want to take Phil for granted after spending so long hiding his love for him and several years trapped by his fear of himself.

maybe we are hearing so many wedding references because the two of them are warming back up to the idea. or maybe they're teasing us about it because somewhere both of them already know that they could do this.

me personally, i think Phil proposes first in a ring that is very deliberately artsy and aesthetic. i think some mishap happens during it and it's kind of a disaster but Dan laughs so hard he starts crying and he says yes before Phil can say anything because he knows Phil didn't script anything, that if Dan said no Phil would get up and kiss him anyway. i think Dan follows suit later, but he's really meticulous about getting Phil something comfortable to wear that still looks nice and complements his ring. it's less of a secret, now, so he asks the Lesters and grumbles about Phil beating him to it, but his proposal goes a lot more smoothly and still takes Phil off guard, doing that small smile you see whenever he looks at Dan.

and i think Dan really wants a fancy dress i mean come on. Phil gets the veil though. or maybe they just sign the papers or procrastinate them and no wedding ever happens. honestly, maybe i'm totally off here-- maybe they're never going to get married, just buy a house several years down the line in the isle of man and never really bother with the legal stuff.

but they're not taking things for granted, anymore. not them, and not their audience. they know they can make references to marriage and we'll go batshit, but they know we don't care. they know we want them happy. and they know that no matter what they do, nurses and bartenders are still going to think Dan is Phil's son and there's a joke i really want to make here but i'm not going to right now.

You’d be surprised! Back when I had more energy and free time (pre-pandemic), my social life was absurdly active. My wife and I were habitual attendees of festivals, conventions (pop culture and kink), goth clubs, annual beach trips, etc. It was fun, if a bit taxing on the social batteries.

The Pandemic really brought out the introvert in me. It also coincided with the implosion of a significant friend circle that impacted several local communities. Toss in lifestyle changes due to notable life events and here I am. Hermit-mode, activated. 😬

I’m not a total recluse though. I enjoy a close knit D&D group that meets every month or two for a campaign that’s going on nearly a decade. I also still see other friend when we manage to make it out to less intensive events (ie. Ren Faire) or when they’re in town for conventions/parties.

I’ll admit, I do miss the group costumes. Roaming a festival as Grim Reapers on Vacation and demanding that people limbo for their life brought a special kind of joy. 😅

Even though I don't actually use Mondlicht on my account, I am physically incapable of disliking "Red Riding Hood themed characters wielding guns" ever since the Darkstalkers series imprinted on me when I was younger. Now if only Mondlicht was actually good/meta...

Runner Ups:

NPCs: If I'd filled this in a week earlier, I would have probably had Hofmann here. But 1.9 added a lot of great NPCs (Ulrich) or at least convinced me on some existing ones (Enigma).

Star: Charlie is my main runner up (my favorite, little Limbo Master) but I do like Apple and Matilda too.

Mineral: There's a big gap between Sonetto and my other favorite Minerals (Balloon Party and Necrologist. They're perfectly fine).

Beast: Desert Flannel and Dikke are cool designs with gameplay I just do not like, at all. DF's Counter just isn't as fun as Voyager or BP. And Dikke is in dire need of a buff.

Spirit: I gotta be honest, I don't have a Runner Up for this Afflatus. I don't have A Knight and Barbara is still two patches away.

Intelligence: Six is one of favorite characters in all of Reverse 1999 (Introverted King) but John Titor is cool too. I'm so glad she got referenced a few times in 1.9's story.

Okay you seem to have really good advice so I'm about to rant about something that's weighing on me because I have no friends and you can completely ignore me if you like

So I'm 18 and I barely know my father, he left when I was a baby signing his rights away and everything. My mother, sister, and I were homeless when I was around 7 so I had to live with him for a few weeks but after that I haven't seen him since. Recently he started talking with my mother on Facebook and she asked if I would like to talk to my father. I thought it over and said okay. Now we're meeting for coffee on Sunday and I'm freaking out. I'm a very awkward and introverted person, I have absolutely no idea how to talk to people. How the hell do you get to know your father. He's not a stranger but he's not someone I know either how do I deal with that. I don't know what to say or do and my mother just kind of insults him whenever I ask which is really unhelpful. I just need something to get me through this without cancelling last minute

My mother has also told me that I'm a lot like my father which makes me think a lot about the nature vs nurture argument but that's unrelated lol but it does kind of hurts since my mother dislikes him so much

I believe the individual and their identity of what they believe and value can be a depending factor on how you are made in the limbo as well as what ‘quirks’ are obtained. 1185 always held a strong idea of trying to be like the Smiling Critters from the show, after all they all had to act like them in orphanage as well as being the positive leader and the charm reflects that character. If something isn’t right, the mask breaks and the charm cracks. I find it surprising that he didn’t lose that after a decade in the factory but maybe the limbo gave some experiments hope for a change. Perhaps it’s a delusion in 1185’s mind as 1188 is not changing course in his mind anytime soon. Though I can tell, the factory did leave a mark on him and so did 1188.”

“The opposite occurs with 1188 as his charm is not affected no matter what. It doesn’t crack, glow, etc. I believe it ties with 1188’s mindset, Theodore’s mindset. He views the ‘Bigger Body Smiling Critters’ as just an act, a group forced to be together and behave like a close group of friends. Which is entirely true. Him being anti social and introverted, hated this. Despite it, he was patient and tolerated the act just enough since he was exclusively shocked and electrocuted if out of line. Isolation really does make certain experiments see the truth of everything and the truth was that they were not the Smiling Critters, they just looked like them. 1188 then saw the others as other lab rats stuck in the same predicament as him, their equivalency being almost the same as the mini critters. Just looking little bigger though. The moon rings hollow as there is no representation of the character or what it stands for, it’s just part of the design.”
