“you wouldn’t.” trevor had a devilish grin on his face as he egged on naomi. “oh but i would!” she stomped off to the bar to get yet another shot of tequila. she and trevor had a bet going to see who could drink the most while appearing the most sober. “hon, do you really need another?” the bartender smiled softly, expression slightly laced with concern. “how much?” naomi asked, dodging the question. the bartender handed her the machine as naomi dug through her purse looking for her card. just as she was about to pay, a hand reached over tapping the machine. she looked up confused but blushed slightly when she saw a man who had a faint resemblance of drew starkey. “oh, why did you do that?” he smiled at her question, shrugging. “pretty girl like you shouldn’t have to pay.”

“oh hell no.” jack eyed the situation at the bar as he stood with quinn and luke, their other friends scattered elsewhere. the two brothers followed his gaze to the bar, before eyeing eachother and bursting into laughter. “he’s stealing your girl.” quinn nudged. jack scoffed at this, “he couldn’t if he tried.” luke raised an eyebrow at his brothers comment, “did you just admit she’s your girl?” jacks face went red. “i- no- he just looks like a fuck boy.” he responded, fixing the cap on his head as quinn rolled his eyes. there was no way jack was calling him a fuck boy whilst wearing a backwards cap and a graphic tee. naomi and the drew starkey look alike had continued conversing, while jack had noticed the guy inching closer towards her. feeling annoyed, he shoved his drink into quinn’s hands, he powered off to the bar. “not his girl my ass.” luke chuckled.

“so are you from here?” the guy sipped his drink, shamelessly eyeing her from head to toe. “i live here now but i’m actually from-“ before she could finished a hand wrapped around her. “hey baby. who’s this?” she rolled her eyes, turning her head towards jack. “oh shit- is this your girl? thats my mad bro.” he raised his hands in the air. “you’re good.” jack replied sternly. getting the message, the guy walked away and naomi groaned. “jackkk!” she whined and he just grinned at her. “what? can’t have anyone taking you away from me.” he shrugged. “awww you’re jealous.” she wiggled her finger in his face. “that’s so cute!” she laughed and he just admired her. he really couldn’t have anyone take her away.

it was 1:30 am, quinn had suggested they go home since he had been getting tired and not drunk enough to get over it since he was DD. to this, trevor had called him a grandpa and naomi pleaded to stay longer. sighing, he had agreed to another half hour. naomi and yasmin had stumbled their way to the women’s washroom for a quick refresh. “so…” yasmin leaned against the wall as she watched naomi reapply her lip combo. “you talk all the time about needing to pull, yet you haven’t approached anyone after jack slid in when that guy bought you a drink.” she commented, sounding more like a question than a statement. “is it cause you actually just want jack?” she teased and naomi blushed. “oh my god stop it.” naomi grabbed her arm, dragging her out of the washroom and back to their group of friends. yasmin smiled to herself, knowing what she had said was completely true, and everyone around them also knew it.

“dance with me.” naomi stumbled towards jack placing her hands on his shoulders. “we’re going home now.” he, placed his hands on top of hers, subconsciously rubbing his thumbs on the back of her hand soothingly. she pouted at his response. “quinn’s already pulling up the car.” he said stepping backwards to lead her towards the exit as their friends also headed over. “we’ll dance next time okay?” and he was 100% sure that the next time they had went out he would dance with her for however long she wanted, even if killed his feet. without warning, naomi slumped down the the floor in protest. his eyes widened, trying to catch her on the way down but failing to do so. everyone else had already made their way to the exit but stopped when they noticed they were missing two of the group. yasmin looked around and when her eyes fell to naomi pouting on the floor and jack pleading for her to stand up, she let out the loudest cackle. “holy shit look.” everyone turned their attention the the scene. “yeah i think naomi had one too many shots tonight.” cole laughed. “I WIN!” trevor exclaimed, giving everyone a high five. feeling somewhat embarrassed by the looks they were getting, jack pulled her hands up so she’d stand before picking her up bridal style and walking to their friends. “hey- what- put me down!” she exclaimed, yet she still wrapped her arms around his neck for support, she never wanted him to let go.

What started out to be just a nice night out with the gang was quick to turn into something a bit more devilish.

When Hawk suggested we all go out to watch a movie I couldn't think of anything more fun to do at that moment. But it was even more fun when he brought up the idea of going to a outdoor movie. One where they could all meet up in their cars and have a little blanket set up to watch the movie. It sounded so sweet!

“Reader can you give me a hand with this blanket?” my attention turned to Sam as she held out a large folded-up blanket. Nodding I took one side of the blanket and she took the other. With her help we were both able to lay it down on the ground, perfectly set out for all of us to sit on. We both smiled at each other.

“Great! You guys got the blanket set up, Me Hawk and Demetri got some drinks from the snake bar. Hope I got you the right one babe.” Miguel said as he and the boys walked over. Sam smiled and took the drink from his hand. She gave him a small peak on the lips before sitting down on the blanket. He followed her and plopped down right beside her.

Demetri quickly found his girlfriend who was still in her car, Yasmine refused to get out until he got out. She didn't want to sit on the ground until she had to. The two of them made their way over and sat next to the other couple.

The sound of the loudspeakers around the car lot boomed to life not long after.

Arms wrapped around me making me look up a little.

“Don't think I forgot you Princess. I had to make sure they had what you wanted.” Hawk wiggles the plastic cup that sits in his hand. The contents of it slosh around making the sound of thick ice hitting the inside of the cheap plastic. I smile taking a big sip from the straw. Hawk chuckles before leading us over to the blanket.

Let's Talk About Thasmin

Intro Chapter 1 - Not Something I Usually Do [TW: SA Mentions] Chapter 2 - I Haven't Even Told Anyone, Not Even Myself Chapter 3 & Conclusion - I Wish This Would Go On Forever

Intro

I didn’t know how to write about Thasmin because I didn’t understand what Thasmin was. 

I’m in a weird position with it. I watched the Chibnall era and barely thought about it. I knew about it in series 11, not minding if it became canon or if Ryasmin would instead. I thought Yaz’s attachment to Thirteen seemed stronger than Ryan and Graham’s in series 12 and it was interesting but not that exciting enough for me to go full thassie. I liked the Thasmin bits in series 13 like in Eve of the Daleks and Legend of the Sea Devils (even though I didn’t like the rest of it). But after my rewatch, several things started coming together. I started to see Thirteen and Yaz differently, even seeing parts of them in myself and essentially started looking at the Chibnall era a bit differently as a whole. It’s still not my fave era, but there’s things from it I can appreciate that I didn’t see before.

What interests me about Thasmin isn’t just the ship itself but how the fandom talks about it. Both praise and critiques. Thasmin is the first sapphic ship involving the Doctor, with one sapphic only realising her attraction to women recently, and the other essentially being one of the very few asexual sapphic characters in mainstream TV at the time. Thasmin was fresh with potential but as the essay goes on and from the fandom’s reaction, the potential didn’t fully blossom in the way a lot of fans wanted it to. Whilst I’ve stayed indifferent to it, this ship is somehow so controversial it’s torn the fandom in half, caused many YouTube videos, debates and articles (like this lol) and caused some of the wildest discourse I’ve ever seen throughout my time in the fandom. So this essay is basically an attempt at an asexual, lesbian and possibly bi interpretation of what Thasmin tried to be, how lesbophobia and compulsory sexuality shape the fandom’s ideas about queerness using Thasmin as an example and what Thasmin could've been if handled differently.

I need to make it clear this essay isn’t about proving whether or not Thasmin is queerbait. The discourse since 2022, to me, is unproductive, repetitive and only reinforces misinformation and ignorance towards other queer labels. Regardless of writing quality, Yasmin Khan and the Thirteenth Doctor have confirmed feelings for each other so in my personal opinion, I don’t consider the ship queerbait. I’m aware queerbait has expanded definitions like how the queer character’s storylines and how the queer relationship is carried out but to me, that isn’t proof either. Queerness is a large umbrella term of various identities that are outside of the norm, so not all forms of queerness depend on or can be ‘proven’ solely with a romantic/sexual relationship. These definitions to me exclude queer people whose queerness isn’t dependent on those things or doesn’t involve them at all. Lastly, I don’t believe the conclusion of bad queer representation is that it isn’t queer. It is. It just flopped. 

I’m not writing to prove Thirteen really loved Yaz because as far as I’m concerned, her feelings for Yaz are canon. I’m not writing to prove Thasmin is toxic or morally good because as far as I’m concerned, all ships involving the Doctor, a morally grey character, are all morally grey in their own ways and that would mean also critiquing the ethics of Thoschei, Tenrose, TwelveClara and DoctorRiver. I have no interest in doing this or singling out Thasmin as some unique evil because to me that’s performative. I’m not writing to prove that Yaz is ‘really gay’ or ‘gay enough’ because as far as I’m concerned she is a canon sapphic companion and I don’t believe in gold-star, lesbophobic or biphobic rhetoric to erase any sapphic character’s attraction to women. I’m not writing to prove Thirteen/The Doctor is ‘actually asexual’ because as far as I’m concerned they are, as confirmed by Tennant, Smith, Pertwee, other actors and the official account and I don't care for the validity or close-minded opinions of anti-asexual and ace exclusionist fans, the same way I don’t care for the approval or permission from homophobes, lesbophobes, biphobes, transphobes or any group of queerphobic people to exist.

If you’ve come to this essay for me to critique Thasmin specifically on the basis that the Thirteenth Doctor, Yasmin Khan and/or Thasmin the ship have failed to live up to some arbitrary measure of queerness and that they are un-queer, less queer, fake queer, queerbait or ‘cishet’ then basically… you’re in the wrong place.

With that out of the way, let’s talk Thasmin!

It's important to remember that like any other sexual orientation, it's a spectrum and each person's experience is unique and one account doe not represent all accounts. As mentioned, asexuality is an umbrella term and some people may use it as just one of many descriptors for their sexuality! If you're unsure you can politely ask someone, but they do not owe you an explanation or a deep-dive into their sexuality.
