Yaay!!!okay, so. I will be honest. I originally only knew him from the movies too. Thankfully, My Father is a huuuuge comic book fan, and he have me a short little one hour explination on Wolverine. That's all it took. I was so offended when I realized they changed his height. But, like Ive said before, hes my blorbo now. Blorboification, if you will.

Wolverine inthecomics (andmovies) is a lot more...tortured, and acts immature. Hes a bitter old man, with no tears left to cry. Just rage and exhaustion. And it almost never stops. He moves in, makes friends/family/kids, they die, he kills their killers, he moves on. He never learns any lessons besides:dont love. Move on.

And thats shit! He deserves to advance as a character in a way that still allows them to keep writing about him. So I do. :)

House of Cards and the Newsroom: The Best Worst Shows or the Worst Best Shows on Television

I say with a mixture of shame, begrudging acceptance, and genuineexcitement that I cannot wait for the next season of House of Cards. Netflix’s prestige drama that, more or less, became the kickstarter for original streaming content and showed the world that it is in fact possible for cable-quality television to be produced by a streaming service. The show has taken home two Golden Globes, and was nominated for 11 Emmy awards including writing and best series, on top of this it enjoys a 9.1 rating on imdb, higher than Mad Men, Seinfeld, and Netflix’s similarly prestigious Orange is the New Black.

Too bad the show isn’t that good.

And most people I’ve talked to about it tend to agree with me. House of Cards is just not a very good show. Don’t get me wrong, I’m going to watch every single episode once it premiers, and I’m gonna get some masochistic joy out of it. Part of the fun in watching House of Cards, for me at least, is trying to determine whether or not this show is the best worst show on television or the worst best show on television, and why we’re all falling for it.

Part of it, I think, has to do with the cast and crew assembled. The star of the series is Kevin Spacey, who was the 90’s mainstream prestige golden boy. A two-time Oscar winning actor who seemed prime to take up the everyman mantle left vacant by Jack Lemmon. Robin Wright plays his wife with an airy coldness, and delivers the most under appreciated performance on the show. On top of this, you’ve got David Fincher, one of the internet’s most beloved and revered directors, directing the first two episodes and executive producing the series, and his sheen is felt on every corner of the frame.

But the plot makes no fucking sense. It’s one of the heaviest plotted shows I’ve ever seen, and it oozes contrivances from every pore.

So why doesn’t it work? Or why does it work but in the unintended manner? Or is it intentional? Does it deserve a seat at the table with Breaking Bad and Mad Men? Why do I keep watching it?

I think why I keep watching it is because The Newsroom exists, and can serve as a perfect mirror to how good/bad-bad/good prestige programming can go so horribly wrong. Like House of Cards, The Newsroom is stacked by a great cast and crew, but falls under the weight of its own pretensions and delusions of grandeur. House of Cards is a pretentious show with delusions of grandeur, but boy oh boy is it pulpy.

House of Cards, I think, is ultimately successful in its quest because it’s just out here to entertain us, and you can see that on the screen. So what if its plot isn’t as tight as Breaking Bad or The Wire, or its acting and sheer craftsmanship up to par with Mad Men, it’s having a good time and not trying to be anything its not. The Newsroom, on the other hand, believes it is a capital-I, capital-S Important Show, one that belongs hanging from the rafters with Sorkin’s earlier effort The West Wing.

I put it this way: House of Cards is a good show but that knows it’s bad and everyone is falling for it, The Newsroom is a bad show that thinks its good and nobody is falling for it.

I can’t wait for February 27th. I can’t wait to see what Frank Underwood is going to get away with this year, and just how much fun he’s going to have doing it.
