The James Somerton thing is one of those rare cases where the amount of force applied by a viral video exposee / public shaming is probably the exact amount that was necessary to stop a bad actor from acting badly. However. The aftermath of public violence is often fear. So I would caution people against taking the "live your life in a way that avoids hbomberguy making videos about you" atmosphere too seriously. Remix is ok. Pastiche is ok. Transformative works are ok. Citing sources in a way that isn't perfectly consistent with MLA and APA standards is generally fine. The problem with a vibes-based crime is that there are always going to be grey areas. Somerton went way past the grey and over the line, but don't let the fact that one person did crimes in the shittiest possible way scare you off of crimes entirely. Push the envelope.

Why we’re against AI as a writing tool
Sophisticated AI tools like ChatGPT are the result of systemic, shameless theft of intellectual property and creative labor on a massive scale. These companies have mined the data of human genius… without permission. They have no intention of acknowledging their stolen sources, let alone paying the creators.
The tech industry’s defense is “Well, we stole so much from so many that it kinda doesn’t count, wouldn’t ya say?” Which is an argument that makes me feel like the mayor of Crazytown. I don’t doubt the courts will rule in their favor, not because it’s right, but because the opportunities for wealth generation are too succulent to let a lil’ thang like fairness win.
I’m not a luddite. I recognize that AI feels like magic to people who aren’t strong writers. I’d feel differently if the technology was achieved without the theft of my work. Couldn’t these tools have been made using legally obtained materials? Ah, but then they wouldn’t have been first to market! Think of the shareholders!
We’re lucky to have the ability and will to write. We won’t willingly use tools that devalue that skill. At most, I could see us using AI to assist with specific, narrow tasks like transcribing interview audio into text.
At a recent industry meetup, I listened as two personal finance gurus gushed about how easy AI made their lives. “All my newsletters and blogs are AI now! I add my own touches here and there—but it does 95% of the work!” Must be nice, I whispered to the empty void where my faith in mankind once dwelt, fingernails digging into my palms. It’s tough knowing I’m one of the myriad voices “streamlining their production.”
I feel strongly that every content creator who uses AI has a minimum duty to acknowledge it. Few will. It sucks. I’m frothing. Let’s move on.

I'd like to report a %@$#ing crime
What the hell is this?
youtube
Why did they sex swap my nurse goat persona back to a girl?
They did it 3 years ago, which is when I started transitioning.
Is my journey a %@$#ing joke to you?
Can you not do without your girl goat waifu material, so made a Vtuber model based on my current MALE Vtuber model?
This is all kinds of offensive. I'm so mad. But guess what? It gets worse.
So a male friend I have is called 'Sable the Smilodon'. And they sex swapped them too.
So even if you take the goat nurse thing as a coincidence, WHY THE HELL ARE THEY FRIENDS WITH A SMILODON?
It's not like everyone has a freaking smilodon oc is it?
And that's not even the most egregious part.
They also sex swapped our friend Andy Ignis, who's a fire golem firefighter.
It's so offensive because he's a firefighter in real life and was one of the men tackling the Inverness wildfire recently.
I don't see you fighting any fires do i? That man has saved countless lives.
In fact this copycat's persona is a person who starts fires as a gimmick.
You just wanted to go full house on offending everyone.
Andy was at 9/11 for Christ's sake!
I hope someone does something to these people to stop them from profiting off genuine service workers.
I didn't nearly die from exhaustion fighting the pandemic for no pay just to be some eye candy for a lecherous thief.
PUT THESE %@$#'S IN JAIL!

Just say that you lack creativity and are jealous of people who can express themselves with their chosen medium of expression. There are millions of ways and tools to express oneself, yet you chose AI to do your hard work, which is “the act of creating”. Feel ashamed, not proud.

People who screenshot other people's posts to rant about them... Are they 4-year old children, or what? So, reblogging a post to discuss is considered rude, but talking behind their back is ok? I really don't understand the stupid etiquette of this website.

"But I WANT Chat GPT To Finish this Fanfic! :( :( :("
The most frustrating thing about the rise of the techbro is that they don't understand copyright because they've never had to. It's never been a concern for them, so why would they have ever thought about it?
This leads to a plague of asshats with chronic Dunning-Kruger-itis just deciding they know more about copyright than people who have been well-versed in it for their whole lives.
That's why you get these clueless AI users saying things like "you don't own fanfic, haha got youuuu" because they only have a vague, transparent understanding of IP and how content works.
Here's some actual truth: The reason writers, showrunners, producers, and actors don't read fanfic is because if they do, and they get an idea from your work, and then that idea APPEARS in the media, they have to prove they didn't steal it. (actually, because of the mega-billion dollar entertainment industry, the accuser has to prove the company DID steal it. Harder, but not impossible.)
If it turns out to be stolen, the company MIGHT HAVE TO PAY THE FANFIC AUTHOR FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION AS A WRITER. This depends on how the court case goes and how similar your work is to the "official" work. Generally, even though it's a fanfic, there's a LOT of original content in that writing, which does NOT automatically belong to the IP.
The original content belongs to the writer, unless the company buys it.
SO! If you, as Techbro McDunning-Kruger, loads that shit into a chatbot or AI text generator, the ONLY shit that doesn't have a natural copyright is anything that VERY SPECIFICALLY pertains to the media itself. Generally, this includes names and extremely unique concepts. Everything else is stolen.
You want to know how I know?
Fucking 50 Shades of Gray.
It's a fanfic, where only the names and hard concepts from Twilight have been changed. It's still being sold, and no money is being paid to Stephanie Meyer.
There's other examples, too. 50 Shades is just the most well-known.
Fanfic is protected. The original material in that fic is copyrighted to the original author. If they tell you you can't use it, you can't use it.
In conclusion: I don't care how much you scream and pound your fists on your chest and piss on trees to assert your dominance. Spewing this nonsense about how fanfic is public domain and you get to use it because you want to is theft. Stop doing it.

I've encountered a number of leftists who are anti-IP on paper, but still somehow talk about AI "stealing from artists". Some of them liken it to wage theft, but that comparison is flawed because a wage thief stole your actual time by tricking you into doing work that you would not otherwise have done had you known you weren't getting paid. Others support "moral rights"; their issue is simply with the way IP is enforced in a capitalist society, and not with the fundamental spirit of IP itself

Carry It In
If this is what you call art, well that's truly sad but sure, go ahead Continue as if you've got something to prove They're all going to laugh at you especially when they think your not in on the joke
Lift that chin high and don't let it drop Have some pride in the lines you stole from your heroes creative theft, your nothing but a parasite I know how harsh that sounds I stand by what I've said
I thought you'd get better with practice and you've just gotten better at ripping off Whitman again You need the intellectual attention and you grip at it with bitten fingernails You're painted face shows the anxiety more than you will admit It's creating crow's feet and worried wrinkles and it's finally coming through your disguise
You're not going to change You've proven that time and time again And you've always been one to get your way Your just a spoiled trust fund cog and your gears aren't working for you
Did you really think I didn't read Cummings and Whitman?

2004: piracy is destroying our creative industries. The unauthorised use of our intellectual property discourages people from generating new media and devalues everyone's work.
2024: Oh you wrote/ drew/ animated/ filmed/ sung something and uploaded it to our website? We'll sell that shit to the highest bidder to train their garbage generator lol

gonna say something controversial. some of you act about ai art the same way trad "art critics" act about modern art. just because it's not presented in a medium you're used to doesn't mean it's "degenerate" you just sound like a reactionary

I think if folks want to form a new and healthier intellectualism as a tide against a lot of the culture industries worst sins, we also have to freely share information. If you have access to an ebook, share it, if your professors have class readings spread them around, put your notes up online. Be free and willing to talk to people about questions they have, point to your sources, leave no barrier against learning intact. If we actually want to get people to think and look and listen we cant just "advocate" for change; we have to make it, too.
