Some claimed “Toronto the Good” had lost its innocence; others claimed its institutions had never been innocent at all. . Led by a group called the Black Action Defense Committee (BADC), as many as 500 protesters converged at the American consulate on University Avenue just two weeks after video surfaced of Rodney King, a Los Angeles resident, being beaten by several police officers following a traffic stop. . As protests grew across the United States, Toronto police shot and killed Raymond Lawrence, a young black man, who allegedly brandished a knife in a downtown Toronto alleyway. . News of the killing stoked tensions already spurned by rising inequality, unemployment and, as some argued, emerging footage of the riots in Los Angeles. On May 4th, 1992, protestors marched down Yonge Street demanding social reform. . Others, clearly frustrated by recent events, destroyed storefront windows, looted several businesses and confronted Toronto police while many of the original protestors denounced the violence. . The events and the damage shocked Toronto residents, who could not believe violent riots could occur north of the border. According to the CBC, over 100 stores were damaged, 37 police and three horses injured and 38 arrested. .
