Music is just music, wtf is a quirk going to change about it??? Maybe a couple vocal styles that couldnt otherwise be replicated with equipment?

Daily Instrument — Morin Khuur

The morin khuur is a Mongolian bowed string instrument, translating to “horse fiddle”. Legends around the Morin Khuur say that the instrument comes from the deaths of beloved horses. In addition, the morin khuur is said to sound like a horse, and is used in taming horses. The morin khuur has a rectangular soundbox, long neck, and a tuning box the shape of a horse head. Both the bow and the two strings are made of horsehair. And the instrument is played in between the players legs and rest on the neck.

He overhears from you and your friends talking that you play an instrument and is now curious.

He wonders how long you've been playing that instrument and whether or not he'll be able to catch a glimpse of you playing.

His curiosity gets the best of him so he begs one of your closest friends to record you playing.

He doesn't dare to ask if he can watch you play because he's too embarrassed to talk to you at this point of time.

Your friend agrees to his request but not without payment. This guy has a big fat crush on you so he doesn't hesitate on agreeing to whatever price they offer. (He paid like $15 and it's totally worth it)

Your friend asks you to play the instrument all of sudden which you, of course find suspicious but pay no mind to. (Just a simple song or tune)

And so while you're preparing your stuff, your friend secretly places their phone somewhere convenient.

Their phones position is perfect because it captures you playing in the most flattering angle possible while still staying hidden from your view.

Once you finish playing, you put down your instrument and walk towards them. Before you even turned around they had already snatched their phone from its position and put it in their pocket.

You ask once more on the reason for the abrupt request but they shrug your concerns off saying it's no biggie. You still feel suspicious of what's really going on but don't pry any further.

Once he received the recording of you, he leaps for joy in the privacy of his own room, and doesn't waste another minute in watching the video.

He's so enamoured with you it's almost disgusting. He watches the video intently from start to finish. When the videos ends, he smiles thinking about how beautiful you looked; even if you didn't put all your effort into it.

In his heart, he wishes he could see you playing first hand next time so he can fully admire you.

you have come to the right neighbourhood... *puts on my pharisees hat* I am so happy to answer this question

I recommend you start with the 1996 west end revival (spotify, youtube). the insrumentation is great, the quality of the recording is crisp, and the performers are top-notch. steve balsamo as jesus is definitely the star of this one, his voice is very light and pure but he also portrays the character's inner conflict magnificently.

for comparison, there is also the original 1971 broadway cast recording (spotify, youtube). this is one of my favourite versions!

here is also the original 1972 west end production (youtube). also excellent!!!

if you actually want something to watch, there is the 1973 film (spotify, youtube, I think the film can be rented on YT as well, I borrowed the DVD from my local library haha). the film also has a magnificent cast, many people consider ted neeley the best jesus ever and he has an unique take on the role and a gorgeous voice. carl anderson as judas is also just superb. I think the best word to decribe this version is "raw", it's really haunting.

the original 1970 concept album (spotify, youtube) with ian gillan of deep purple as jesus and murray head as judas is also a must-listen! both singers are just divine, both their performances easily hold up against newer productions with ease, they're just divine.

there is also the 2000 film, watchable on youtube (the album on spotify). jerome pradon plays judas and he is absolutely glorious at it. dude is going absolutely off the rails and his voice is so whiny and he's so deliciously vindicative in the end. I've gotten the impression his performance can be sort of hit-or-miss, but I really like it!

for something more recent, there's also the 2012 arena tour (youtube) with ben forster as jesus and the legendary tim minchin as judas. a lot of people like this one, and while I personally don't like it much, maybe you will! there is also the 2018 live in concert (spotify, youtube). a solid, good production I think.

now I think every song in JCS is a solid banger, but good songs to look out for when listening is

Daily Instrument — Bonang

The bonang is an idiophone played in the Javanese gamelan. The Bonang has one or two rows of gongs placed onto strings inside of a wooden frame. The gong in the bonang are shaped into the form of kettles, and are struck with padded sticks called tabuh. The bonang has three types in the Javanese gamelan, all varying in pitch. From highest to lowest the types are the bonang panerus, bonang barung, and bonang panembung.
