my entry of a sonic/amy/shadow bodyswap as seen in @eccentricglimpse 's fic Walk a Mile in My Shoes for the 2024 SONIC BIG BANG !!!! in a matchmaking mishap, sonic swaps with amy, amy swaps with shadow, and shadow swaps with sonic. if i had a nickel for every time i encountered some version of the following observation in the mdzs fandom:

"i'll never understand why fans of jin guangyao and jiang cheng and xue yang keep insisting on defending these characters' virtues. you can just admit that your favourite characters are assholes and terrible people. it's fine. why are you defending them."

i could probably buy myself a packet of some really sick edibles the next time i hit up the dispensary. but more to the point, what truly frustrates me about this observation (aside from the implicit arrogance that seems smugly baked into it every time i stumble upon it) is how completely it misunderstands what villain and antagonist fans are doing when we discuss the positive attributes of our favourite characters. it's the assumption that what we're doing must always be about defence, about arguments, about insisting that the characters we like are Good, Actually, And Here's Why--when in reality i have never, ever, ever encountered a fan of any of these characters who has been interested in definitively declaring that any of them are good or bad people. like that just straight up hasn't been part of the conversations we've been having with each other.

like, what you are interpreting as us "defending a character's virtues" is very often just us literally stating how the characters' actions have had a positive impact on other characters' lives, or the world more broadly. or we are just trying to compare acts of cruelty/violence committed by one of these characters vs the acts of cruelty/violence committed by the protagonist and his inner circle, to draw inferences about one or both characters, to better understand them and the story and how they illustrate various themes, whether mxtx meant for them to appear in the text or not. it's just... analysis. and yes, a core competency when it comes to literary analysis means being able to critically defend your arguments using examples from the source material.

jokes about the jgy or jc stans and "defence squads" aside, it's not about defending individual characters, because the characters don't need a defence, because they're not real. but the work we've all collectively put into examining these characters, and contextualizing their actions within their circumstances within the source material, is certainly real, and it makes sense that we'd want to step up and defend our work when people who disagree with us choose to misrepresent our arguments.

Although McRio's fame has been somewhat overshadowed by the success of his younger brother Rio, he is an excellent and fully grownup skater in his own right, comparable in skill to his brother in almost every respect. McRio was not able to attend Nationals this year, but he is reputed to have a body of work that is impressive enough to justify his inclusion on the Worlds team.

Does anybody else think about how Minthara is probably a very slow eater when she's with the group? About how she holds her plate, not eating anything. About how she watches, and waits for someone else to randomly drop dead. About how she doesn't start eating until after everyone has finished because it's the only way she can know for sure the food isn't poisoned.

Or about how sometimes she will secretly throw out the plate, completely paranoid about the food being poisoned. In which she silently prepares her own food in the background or eats the camp rations she gathered herself. Where she microdoses herself and her lover, not necessarily because they might return to Menzoberranzan, but because she thinks one of the other companions might poison her and her lover. Where some nights she has to insist on cooking besides the camp cook for the night or cooks entirely herself as it is the only guarantee that the food isn't poisoned.

Cause I think about it a lot.

I've seen you questing for plastic free tooth tabs that actually work (have flouride). Have you had any success looking for plastic free antiperspirant that actually works (has aluminum)? I'd kind of given up and leaned into just using deodorants but it's promising to be a long summer.

bite toothpaste tabs have fluoride now! unfortunately i have trash teeth and need to buy special extra fluoride paste to wear to bed and that only comes in plastic. also no one makes mouthwash tablets with fluoride. it's a process.

someone DID make a good plastic free antiperspirant with aluminum, and it was secret/old spice, and they fucking discontinued it. i've been buying expired refills on ebay but when my current refill runs out i have no idea what i'm going to do. i might have to go back to buying a glass roller bottle because that's as low-plastic as i've been able to find. i'm so fucking mad. they had the perfect product and they fucking discontinued it before more people knew it existed.
