Not a request but I just wrote this while on a road trip, aka right now. I wrote this in 30 minutes if you can't tell, obviously it's gonna be messy and not proofread

You pant, absolutely exhausted. You had to chase after Grim to somehow force convince him to attend classes, but that little brat keeps running away and hiding. You find yourself all alone in some huge dark hallway, wandering around trying to find Grim.

"Grim ! Grim !! GRIM !!! WHERE ARE YOU ??" You shout, your voice echoing along the walls and high ceilings. "God knows what I'll do once i get my hands on you, you little sh*t.." you mutter angrily.

You're lost, but it's not like you really care at the moment. You're so busy cursing Grim in your head that you can't bring yourself to give a single f*ck.

That is, until you heard the dreadfully familiar voice of Floyd. (Insert oh shit, not good sfx)

"Heya, Lil shrimpy~ whatchu doing here, huh ? Did the little shrimpy get lost ?"

He says, with that menacing toothy grin of his. Sometimes you wonder how the hell his teeth are so white, what kinda toothpaste does he use ? Heck, do they even have colgate in twisted wonderland ? Maybe he uses its twisted wonderland equivalent. But damn, his teeth are whiter than my bedsheets and brighter than my earrings.

After a moment of internal brainstorming, you answer "Yup. Sucks to be me I guess. But that aside, why are you here ?"

His grin widens "that's for me to know and you to find out~" Oh how you want to wipe that stupid grin off his face because BOI you're not in the mood to joke around at the moment. 'Goddammit Grim, you will be the death of me one day..'

"Well, do you happen to know where Grim went ? That little sh- I mean, rascal, decided to play 'the dad who went to get milk' role and disappeared." Holy fucking shit, why is that burj khalifa eel leech whatever the fuck he is guy giggling like a fucking schoolgirl ? (Not that he's far from that actually) .

Giggle not as in the usual giggle he does but the kind of giggle a kid does when he's hiding something. Hmm. That's suspicious, that's weird..*insert sfx*

Well whatever, it doesn't matter what the hell he finds so funny because before you know it, you are gone.

He says, eyes glowing ominously while both of their grins stretch wider than your legs do whenever someone mentions geto or gojo. /j /not j

He quirks an eyebrow "Oh, but i was. You just didn't see me. I was behind you the entire time, prefect."

You trail off. "Well doesn't matter, can you just give me that thing ?"

You point at Grim, purposely calling him a thing to piss him off.

Grim begs to differ though, "THING ??? IM NOT A THING, IM THE GREAT SORCERER GRIM !!!!-" although that doesn't last long, he is quickly shut up by Jade's stare.

You grin, cockily. Haha take that you little gremlin ! That's what you get !!

But your thoughts are cut off just as quickly by Floyd, "Ehhh ? Shrimpy's mouth is open ?"

"Huh ? What does that have to do with this ?" You say, confused. Meanwhile Floyd quickly shoots Jade a knowing glance, which unnerves you.

"Nothing to worry your little head about, shrimpy~" "indeed, my brother is right, do not concern yourself with such matters."

Much to your shock, Jade wordlessly hands you Grim. Your mouth drops open

"Holy shit, Are you guys okay ? You behave as if you just ate Lilia's food... either that, or the sun will rise at the west tomorrow !"

The two simply smile and walk away.

Musings on the blood troth's fight or flight

aka me rewatching the FB2, FB3 while folding laundry

I wanna read deeper regarding the blood troth , blood pact created by Albus & Gellert. Atm I know so little about what has been offered in the movies. And it hurts my brain and wallet.

I have so many questions about the implications of the blood troth's "defense mechanism" ( 'sensing the betrayal' of the other party of the magic oath and choking the life out of them)

What are its limitations with the given definition by Albus? How sentient must it be to discern the right amount of thought to be considered as betrayal? The right amount of physical force needed to 'reinforce'(?) or remind the party member about the terms of their blood magical oath.

Because if every couple had an intense argument that subjected their version of the troth to the breaking point, it would defeat the purpose of making the magical binding and keeping your partner alive til death do you part. Divorce would be cheaper.

What's to say this is another version of the Unbreakable vow? But stronger and more intimate? Considering you wouldn't need a 3rd party presence for a Blood pact from what we've seen so far. Unless Abeforth's goats were there somewhere.

Is it less deadlier because the blood troth doesn't truly snuff out the other party's life if he/she doesn't go through their agreed terms of the contract/marriage?

And what of its advantages? I think when those two starry eyed young teens created the blood pact, it had more implications to strengthen their bond. Perhaps a shared strength of magic? Up to what extent though? If the blood pact had been flawless til the end what would've been the other wonders it bestows the two lovers?

Or what curse? (*Insert suspense sfx*)

The Locked Tomb: I’m definitely Gideon/Harrow on main; I really like fics where one or both of them are trans/nonbinary. Nona is my favorite character so explorations of her found family (the household or the friends or all of them) are important to me. Cam/Pal is important to me. I love modern AUs a lot.

Our Flag Means Death: Obviously Blackbeard/Stede is a big deal and I ship it forever. But my heart belongs to Jim/Olu and any explorations of Jim’s gender identity! Pining Izzy Hands makes me weak, as long as he’s not being abusive towards Edward or Stede, so Izzy/Ed or Izzy/Ed/Stede is always choice.

ATLA: Always and forever a Zuko/Sokka shipper, specifically obsessed with found family in this, gen fic exploring the universe at all is super important to me!!!

All for the Game: Jean/Jeremy forever and always. I will always always eat up Jerejean fics. Of course Andrew/Neil. Renee/Allison. Andrew/Neil/Kevin is perfection. And really just... Gen fics around the Foxes or Trojans will always bring me so much joy.

A RARE ASK: I am super into both Dragon Age & Mass Effect. The former is much easier to find fandom for and there are a lot of fics with blanket permission statements. For Dragon Age, DA:O is my favorite (especially Alistair) or any sort of Hawke!centric fics. But in April 2024 I became re-obsessed with Mass Effect & anticipate it lasting a while. My rare ask is for Mass Effect fics - specifically Shep/Garrus or Shep/Liara (or them as a triad). Or gen fic!! But I feel like I am on an island here lol

Romulus: Minute by Minute

Today I watched Aliens: Romulus, and recorded what I thought about the film when I felt something cool happened. I arrived at the theatre at 8:00PM, all of these notes are unedited and were recorded as the film happened

Start: 8:00 PM Oh nice! Neurodivergency rep! So far the sound effects are the high point for me.

8:02 Oh.

8:04 Tyler? They named this bitCh Tyler? Good to know the upper middle class survived to the future Not a big fan of drawing a comparison between autistic ppl and synths. Like, just make him a guy, and someone else the robot. Or, better yet, don’t insert harmful metaphors into your work.

8:11 I hate Tyler and his bitch brother. They’re the sort of people who are „progressive „ but just don’t want ppl to know what they are. This fucking guy Is talking death threats to the synth, and the other is baby talking him. And then they said the synth doesn’t actually feel anything, and the girl is portrayed as wrong and guilty for taking care of him.

8:21: bitch

8:39: If there’s anything I can compliment this film on, it’s lighting. The sickening yellows and clinical whites add a lot of character to each scene. Also, the lcd panels are hidden really poorly as crts, just some glass and an overlay. They aren’t even 4:3!

8:43: The use of practical effects where CGI would be more convenient warms my heart. It’s done so well too! That just makes me wonder about this abomination:

Just make his face really burned or something, plus, why is he on the Romulus? Callback points?

8:46 Some of this mild horror during scenes where the characters need to be quiet is stellar. This movie handles it’s jumpscares fantastically. Still don’t like that that guy is alive. (The British man)

8:49 I’m glad they didn’t keep the autism thing, this new use of Andy as a direct arm of corporate shittery is much more effective. He legit doesn’t care. I don’t like that British guy lived and the pilot didn’t. I hate British guy.

8:54 Callback!!! Why does Brit have to teach her tho? I get that it’s for the sake of callback, but it would be both more creepy and cooler if Andy said all of that instead, having a machine explain to you how something it’s never seen in fine detail!

8:57 Again, why must he be gun man? Is it to give his character an excuse to exist? I’m neutral about the gun redesign

8:59 I love Andy’s permanent slight concern face, even in death he keeps it up. Must’ve been hard for the actor, I cramp after minutes of that face

The autism/robot parralel is unneeded and tacky. it bogs down the film and alienates people like me. other than that, this film maintains the alien vibe, and is a breath of fresh air when it comes to the slew of shite alien films. the human/human/alien hybrid at the end is pointless and confusing, and acts as an excuse to have a gross birth scene thats a little too much for me personally. its flawed, not as good as aliens, better than 3.

lowkey kind of nervous for 40+ volumes of sparklecare because if V4’s unneeded hype is any indication of what’s to come it’ll probably be another “you guys are soooo not ready for this. this update is DRASTIC this volume is ELITE” and then it’s just 100+ pages of sex jokes with a small, predictable plot twist at the very end -_-

You're so right for this honestly.

As I said before v4 was WAY too overhyped. Like yeah I guess it was a pretty emotional volume compared to the others but the entire thing felt very. Rushed is the word I'll use. The "plot" ran by in a matter of panels, most of the time I spent reading it felt like total whiplash.

I mean, c'mon now. You can't expect people to take a super emotional scene seriously whenever you throw in a million sex jokes right afterwards. It reminds me of hazbin hotel (*insert shuddering sfx*) with the pacing. Right before or after serious emotional scenes a sex joke is thrown in our faces with little to no padding in between the two. There's nothing wrong with dirty jokes, the ones in v1 and v2 even got me to snicker a bit because they were at least placed well and actually funny instead of just shoving the fact that these furries want to bang each other into our faces. But these jokes are getting more and more random and graphic with each passing volume. C'mon man, I just want to read the "emotional" volume. I don't want a sex joke pushed into my face while I'm trying to feel bad for the characters.

Also I'm not sure if anyone has said this before but the proportions are pretty off for that volume specifically. When Cuddles was all like "🤨🤨🤨🤨" when Uni pulled out Kneevil for the first time he was. The height of everyone else pretty much. He's supposed to be 3'9 how do you forget your shortest characters' height.

I'm honestly excited for the major character death coming up. It'll maybe help to give the comic back its emotion, IF it's done correctly. Even if Cuddles is the one that does it just to try and convince us he's the only bad guy again, at least he'll actually be DOING something evil instead of just being a capitalist. Which is bad enough on itself but Spinch is a capitalist planet.

Oh, no, no no no no no no no no! If we're talking with respect to clowning Bryke's utter incompetence as to the shipping war, that's not even the worst part (read: most hilarious) of The Ember Island Players!

It's how that scene takes place, in that it is indeed the only actual scene in which the show's narrative sees the two characters even address the mere p o s s i b i l i t y of them getting together, with Aang forcing a kiss on her and Katara herself in turn yelling at him in anger and storming off... that The Ember Island Players is the Second. to Last Episode. of the series/is the last. episode. b4 the finale*... that audiences knew that to be the case that they watched TEIP as it originally premiered in 2008. Like, homie, if there was ever been a more efficient way of sinking your ship, I mean 'a torpedo struck the ship's magazine compartment that the ensuing explosion obliterated it in its entirety' just obliterating it, I've yet to see it. 🤣

*(To say nothing of how that ensuing finale, you know, quite famously — or infamously, for you Kataangers XD — sees Katara spend some 3/4 of it all but attached to the hip of this here entirely different very much Not Aang male character, that it's the two of them whom the narrative sees share the Quintessential™ Romantic Trope that is the Uber!Intimate/Emotionally Charged Sacrificial Death Scene, that it's... **checks notes** *Kataang* that is the endgame couple. wait one more thing about Ember Island Players that's so funny is like... imagine creating a show and then becoming either frustrated/annoyed/bemused that a sizable part of your fandom ships two characters that you don't want them to. And instead of ignoring it or letting it lie, they decide to use this episode as a moment to show these fans how silly that ship is. And sure, maybe its all supposed to be in good fun but like if the goal, in-part, was to discourage people shipping them, I cannot emphasize enough how acknowledging the pairing in-universe, having people consistently mistake them for a couple, and having said characters constantly over-react to the very notion and get belligerently defensive because they are very much not dating why would you say that is extremely antithetical to that goal.

“The problem is, Sunhee— If I kissed you,”

Images flickered through her mind at a dizzying rate, flashing freckles that dotted the other’s cheeks, and how they must have turned to stardust.. The glow of the deceased’s smile forced her hand to shake. Her fingers dug into crushed flowers over frustration. That — that person — their existence alone filled Sunhee’s veins up with liquid silver. The stings made the idea turn into a disease she could no longer cure. The only thing that.. person, has ever done was permit uncomfortable situations. Situations of flirting and touching, too much, too far. The whole point was to give her a lesson, a lesson that was well delivered.

Even so, something towards the back of her head encouraged a belief that she— she had no right to mourn. She had no right to comfort her fellow peers as they fall to their knees in loud sobs, tears staining their cheeks. So, only anger and hatred filled her to a leaking brim.

“Sunhee. You can’t seriously be feeling sorry for her, right? She fell. It wasn’t our fault. Now go before someone sees.”

But, was she mad at the photo framed with delicates before her? Or was she furious with herself?

The past several weeks, law enforcement officials have made the school their newly established home. Just, that their only purpose was to consistently question students on an ongoing missing persons case. The case was over Jeju High’s beloved— lesbian— Park Jiah. Although, it seemed that the police peaked an interest on Sunhee. After all, Sunhee was the local gossip queen.. and the deceased’s biggest crush.

“Keep your mouth fucking shut. This could destroy all of our lives.” “We did this for you, Sunhee, why are you backing out now? You wanted that faggot off your ass.”

The case went cold.

It went cold until the discovery of Jiah’s body at the bottom of a lake, skull ripped to shreds and fish feeding off of flesh. They classified the autopsy as a suicide which closed the case permanently after two months.

Yet, You don’t get to die and be reborn the same. You come back, yet you come back wrong.

Maybe being handed life from two famous celebrities made it so simple. As if an all out pass to society’s perfect face was nothing but a gift from absent loving parents. Everything from that point on continued to be handed to her with ease, she began to believe it was a basic right. A right that those who were made to stand had, and those who didn’t receive, were just stepping stones.

Even fame was something to be groomed for, the public eye always kept a close look towards her actions anyways. Cameras consistently monitored every movement, trend, place, vacation— anything. Paparazzis couldn’t get enough of Korea’s new perfect little sunshine.

But, she thrived in it, breathed it, demanded it. It’s all she’s ever known.

Sunhee continued to desire more— yes, more than that high school popularity or the rapid growth of social media accounts.. More, more, more. She wanted the public to bow down to her like a princess. She threaded unadulterated beauty to her core, flexed it. Every smile thrown a direction always caused a beautiful headline photo. Just what more could she receive? Displeasure began to seep towards darkened corners. It wasn’t enough, it was never enough.

So, the young adult inserted herself into different communities to stretch the name. Makeup, SFX, fashion, modeling— what else couldn’t she pull off or turn into her own trend? It was a sense of feminine art that etched into her creativity, something she grew to adore rather quickly with makeup being her largest focus. Such a focus that college permitted her into a business major in hopes to develop her own company.

Sunhee must have saved an entire nation from a previous life to be rewarded with an easy access life. Or, at least.. the public believes her day-to-day is that simple.

Audrey Rose: Has two YouTube channels, shes got a crazy mad STEM channel were she does experiments and science stuff but also really promotes and focuses on making science and stem accessible for young girls. But she also has like a lifestyle channel where she does book reviews and travel vlogs or just cute life updates, by that I mean videos of her and Thomas' cats.

Thomas: He's either a commentary channel that educates and covers a huge range of different stuff like from conspiracy theories to political drama to fucking beauty community drama lbr. Or he does like reaction videos *real-life pathologist reacts to **insert crime drama show** (Let it be known Audrey Rose features in these, and acts like she hates is but like five minutes in and she's ripping her hair out, also like imagine them flirting completely in inappropriately while commenting on death. Yes.) He probably also uploaded a video once of him and Ms Harvey baking and people have not stopped asking for a part 2 since.

Liza: She's a beauty and lifestyle influencer but with no drama like she stays clear. She's in it for the content. She makes a lot of "basic" like review and tutorials for like every day glam but also goes all out at least once a month. Features Audrey Rose on her channel all the time. Most viewed videos have the Audrey Rose and Daciana in.

Daciana: Also a beauty and lifestyle influencer, lowkey does live for the drama. But hardly ever involved in scandals cos she can cover her tracks and is very subtle when throwing shade. Daciana, however, lives for the glam. She does a lot of gory and SFX makeup tutorials as well. Her and Liza collab all the time. Also, a huge campaigner for LGBTQ+ rights and probably has her own makeup line of specifically red and gothic themed products.

Ayden (Mephistopheles): honestly he either does Casey Neistat level travel vlogs or he like uploads some insane magic stunt once every three months but people go GAGA for them. He uploads like two days before the moonlight carnival shows up somewhere. It's a business tactic but it works. He wears a mask and goes by Mephistopheles.

However, he often goes on Audrey Rose's channel and they do science and stuff together but he doesn't wear the mask and no one has figured out who he is yet. People ship them it's a big drama. Thomas has made a reaction video about the Audrey Rose x Ayden shippers just laughing at them because that's his WIFE.

Satanic Panic 2.0: The Momo Challenge hoax [TW: Self-harm/suicide]

According to reports from gullible parents' organizations, police departments, and media outlets, Kids on the Internet are spreading memes featuring an image of "Momo" (actually a sculpture called "Mother Bird" created by Keisuke Aisawa for the Japanese SFX studio Link Factory) that includes explicit self-harm and suicide instructions (the "challenge" in "Momo challenge" is allegedly to get kids to hurt or kill themselves).

It's a hoax, though. There are no verified sightings of Momo Challenge memes in the wild, and this isn't even the first time this hoax has gone around; it circulated in September 2018 as well.

As Taylor Lorenz writes in The Atlantic, this is part of a genre of hoaxes that rely on parental anxiety about kids' use of technology to spread incomprehensible cultural ideas, from the Satanic Panic over backmasked secret messages in heavy metal lyrics to the "eating Tide Pods" hoax to the fictional deaths linked to the "cinnamon challenge."

As it happens, there is someone who -- unrelated to the Momo hoax -- appears to have inserted at least two self-harm messages in kids' videos.

Batfam/DC: I can be picky and yet not? Basically, I just prefer no inner-Batfam fics of the boys because I truly view them as brothers. My favorite ships are Jason Todd/Roy Harper(/Kori), Dick Grayson/Wally West, Harley/Ivy (back to being super into them), Tim Drake/Kon, and Wally/Artemis from Young Justice. This is the fandom that I specifically am obsessed with found family in. -- I love exploring Alfred being the boys' Grandpa and Bruce’s complex dadhood.

The Locked Tomb: I’m definitely Gideon/Harrow on main; I really like fics where one or both of them are trans/nonbinary. Nona is my favorite character so explorations of her found family (the household or the friends or all of them) are important to me. Cam/Pal is important to me. I love modern AUs a lot.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy/Spike is always a love (with acknowledgment of how tricky of a ship it is to navigate) but I mostly love Scooby Gang gen fic! And I adore Buffy crossovers with shows like Supernatural or movies like Star Wars.

Our Flag Means Death: Obviously Blackbeard/Stede is a big deal and I ship it forever. But my heart belongs to Jim/Olu and any explorations of Jim’s gender identity! Pining Izzy Hands makes me weak, as long as he’s not being abusive towards Edward or Stede.

ATLA: Always and forever a Zuko/Sokka shipper, specifically obsessed with found family in this, gen fic exploring the universe at all is super important to me!!!

MISC OTHERS: First Kill; The Adventure Zone; Red, White and Royal Blue; Good Omens; The Tarot Sequence; All for the Game; Teen Wolf; and Sandman.

The Scariest Films Ever Made and How They Frighten Us

It was while I was researching The Book of Horror, an illustrated guide to the scariest movies ever made, that I first started seeing things. 

Not the full Haley Joel Osment, you understand, but what we’ll call a seventh sense. I’d catch glimpses of something out of the corner of my eye, and my mind would fill in the blanks with spooky imagery because I was consuming so much of it. 

It didn’t help that my son had just been born. Lack of sleep combined with horror movie overload is a condition I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Night becomes dawn becomes day – the full George A Romero – and reality becomes harder and harder to rely upon.

Driving past the local garage one evening, I saw a Creepshow skeleton caked with remnants of clinging skin staring out at me from the front seat of a car. Watching The Great British Bake Off, that beacon of primetime TV evil, I glimpsed a J-horror wraith standing outside the tent. 

The cause of this – temporary – insanity was watching up to five horror movies a day for eight months as research for The Book of Horror, casting my net far and wide to seek out the most frightening films the genre has to offer. 

But once I’d seen all the main contenders, plus hundreds of wild cards, the question was how to compare them: just what is it that links the grottiest slasher with the most sophisticated ghost story? With the help of my publisher and some horror-fiend friends, I developed a system I called Scare Tactics to analyse how horror films actually work.

By my reckoning, there are seven main Scare Tactics. And while most horror films use most of the Scare Tactics at some point or another, the frequency and intensity of usage changes depending on the subgenre you’re watching. 

So Halloween might score highly on Dread (Scare Tactic #5) because we’re always waiting for Michael Myers to strike, but low on The Grotesque (Scare Tactic #4), because the killings are mostly gore-free – although he does eat a dog. The Descent, meanwhile, scores highly on The Unexpected (Scare Tactic #3), because of its excellent jump scares, but low on The Uncanny (Scare Tactic #6), because its bestial horrors could not be more, well, down to earth.

The seven Scare Tactics are as follows:

#1 DEAD SPACE

There are two kinds of Dead Space. Negative space is when there’s so much room around the subject of a shot it feels like something might jump out at any moment. A good example is the large expanse of curtain behind Janet Leigh in Psycho’s shower scene. Positive space is when there’s too the old crone lying in bed behind Christine (Alison Lohman) in Drag Me to Hell. A film that uses Dead Space really effectively is It Follows, which has viewers anxiously scanning the corners of the frame for the next incoming threat.

#2 THE SUBLIMINAL

This refers to all the sly cinematic tricks that film-makers employ without us noticing. Think of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s slaughterhouse noises, or the unearthly breathing on Suspiria’s soundtrack. In The Exorcist William Friedkin uses buzzing insects to stimulate a fight-or-flight response, and there are several inserts of a black-and-white demon’s face (actually Eileen Dietz, Linda Blair’s stand-in) that occur for an eighth of a second, and couldn’t be easily seen pre-VHS. No wonder viewers thought the film itself was possessed.

#3 THE UNEXPECTED

From jump scares to plot twists, The Unexpected covers all the ways horror films pull the rug from beneath our feet. When used well, as in Insidious when the red-faced demon appears behind Josh (Patrick Wilson), jump scares increase our anxiety levels as we wait for the next nasty surprise. Meanwhile, sudden plot twists like the shock death of Charlie (Milly Shapiro) in Hereditary break a pact with the audience. If the film’s capable of doing that to a little girl, we think, what the hell’s going to happen next?

Film to see: Insidious

#4 THE GROTESQUE

Whether splatter movie or creature feature, The Grotesque is all about grossing viewers out with leaking wounds and stomach-churning SFX. And it’s no wonder: we’re programmed to find broken bodies upsetting, and watching people in pain makes us feel vulnerable too, hence why Martyrs is so hard to watch. Triggered by everything from arachnids and aliens to blood and brains, disgust can be a powerful tool, as Neil Marshall shows in The Descent. Here the slimy, sightless crawlers get battered to death in inventive, unforgettably squishy ways.

Film to see: The Descent 

#5 DREAD

This is the awful feeling of anticipation when you know something bad is going to happen. It’s a common feature of the ghost story, where the house is clearly haunted but the spectres take time to reveal themselves. Dread can come from within the story itself, such as the many warnings about Hill House at the start of The Haunting, or technical elements such as extended Steadicam shots, which eke out the tension before a big reveal. In The Shining, the longer Danny (Danny Lloyd) wheels around the corridors in those insinuating, unbroken takes, the more we’re scared of what lurks around the next corner.

#6) THE UNCANNY

The Uncanny is that strange, slightly dreamlike sense that what you’re seeing is not quite right. It could be something inanimate, like a doll, seeming to move, as in the climax of Dead of Night; something normal subtly altered, like Banshee Chapter’s blank-faced human monsters; or something jarring in a mundane setting, like the old lady dancing behind Bev (Jessica Chastain) in It Chapter Two. Perhaps the best example if the way Sadako (Rie Ino’o) moves towards her victims in Ring. In fact, the actor was filmed walking backwards then the footage reversed, so it’s no wonder it looks so plainly, petrifyingly wrong. 

Film to see: Ring

#7 THE UNSTOPPABLE 

Unlike most films, which reach some kind of happy-ever-after, horror movies are more like nightmares, refusing to resolve themselves and let us off the hook. A good example is the end of Halloween where Michael Myers is revealed to be, basically, the bogeyman – an unkillable force stalking the streets in sequel after sequel. There’s also a sense of The Unstoppable in John Carpenter’s looping synth score, which keeps leading us back to the start. Ju-On: The Grudge, meanwhile, takes The Unstoppable to new extremes because its central curse keeps expanding outwards with no hint of how it can be stopped, and no closure for the viewer.

So, to put all the Scare Tactics this in real-life terms, let’s look back at what happened to me. Seeing things out of the corner of my eye is Dead Space. The fact I’m hallucinating is The Subliminal effect of watching too many horror films. Suddenly spotting a skeleton as you drive past a garage is The Unexpected, and the skin still clinging to its bones is The Grotesque. Dread is driving past the garage the next time and being scared of what you’ll see, while The Uncanny is the incongruousness of a ghost appearing on Bake-Off. Luckily The Unstoppable only really relates to movies, otherwise I’d be in deep trouble.
