Insektober day 2: Garden!

It may surprise you to know Krud City has its own garden! Of course, it must be self sufficient in order to ensure its citizens don't go hungry! Though, it's a lot different than Flowered City's gardens. The Kruds only grow microgreens, potatoes, wild onions, and rice, as anything more is seen as fanciful and decadent, and therefore a waste of the limited space the citadel can provide.

Akane and Kaboche offer helping hands in the garden by planting and watering a new bed of sprouts! They aren't carreer gardeners, they just help out when they feel like it. I could talk for AGES abt Krud n Verigreen culture ngl it is SO fucking fun I missed this sm LOL

Chromaverse Daily Challenge - Day 13: Sports

Bluebells School has two sporting teams one for bowling and the other is Roller Derby. Each year students try out rehearsals and the ones with great skill will be selected for this year's team to compete with other schools.

Makria and Wasabi try out Roller Derby rehearsals. This is their casual roller skating gear but they'll wear the team's uniforms if they are chosen. If they both end up selected, I think they'll be a great sibling team.

I'm going to fucking SCREAM why did I post this on my reblogs account lmfao!! UGH I was so out of it last night ffs. No wonder it got no traction!!! (as if my funny bug posts dont get like 2 notes each) Any fucking ways lol.

HUGE headcanon post abt funny bug food since I have been thinking abt it for a while!!

So Krud food is weird because Krud City is barren and the only fresh food sources they have are aquatic vegetation and fish! It's also possible they might have a garden, but it's small and maintained by the commoners (The Insektors Annual 1997 book calls the commoners "common-or-garden Kruds" in Bakrakra's description) so it could be herbs or microgreens? They MIGHT benefit from growing potatoes and wild onions since they're easygoing, so I won't rule out that possibility! Similarly, they may also grow rice since they're surrounded by water, and rice grows well in very wet environments?

So aside from the aforementioned fish, sea greens, and potentially rice and potatoes, most krud food is imported from other places in Yukdom or occasionally Joyceland (they have a bitter grudge obviously but DAMMIT Joyceland fruit is tasty!!) OR Kruds can just go into Flowered City and steal... but thats pretty shitty lol. Krud hunters like Niff basically never kill the animals they hunt, because they are HUGE compared to the Insektors themselves! It'd be too much of a waste to kill them, so Niff and other hunters merely use blades to cut chunks of flesh from their prey, and it's actually a pretty scary/dangerous job! Similarly, Kruds do eat eggs, but I think that'd be RLLY difficult considering they're so tiny in comparison! I think it must be quail eggs or even hummingbird eggs. Hummingbird sounds ridiculous, but it'd be the same size as a full grown Krud so like, I think it's more reasonable. They'd be a pain to harvest though, maybe ants collect them since they're the strongest!

A lot of imported food is often dried so it can last longer-- Kruds are very against wasting food (funny considering their horrible carbon footprint LOL) so dried fruit and jerky is consumed more often than their fresh equivalents. This is actually kind of a problem for hemipterans like Makabris, however, since they don't have teeth and can only 'drink' their food. I imagine they are probably used to drinking things that have been powdered and blended. Which is gross, but sometimes being a Krud is less abt living and more abt surviving! Maybe all the time actually lol. They're kind of ascetic. OH YEAH also Kruds know how to pickle and process/grind foods! in the UK dub Wasabi knows what burgers and pickles are so they must exist on a funny bug scale. Which is good since I dont think there's an easier way for the Insektors to eat stuff like grains beyond them being processed into flour, cuz ONCE AGAIN, grains are HUGE compared to them! I was joking abt this on my server cuz even though the Kruds have the right ingredients to make sushi regularly (rice, seaweed, fish) it'd have to be RLLY WEIRD sushi because they're too small to eat individual grains of rice! So it'd have to be made of something more like rice cakes? Their bread may also be more often made of rice flour or potato starch cuz of the whole garden thing I mentioned before, idk if they'd be able to grow the other stuf.

I totally overthought this whole thing LOL. It rlly harkens back to my Crash phase where I'd overthink the CNK aliens! I kind of miss that ngl I'd totally do it again if any of them returned in Crash Team Rumble....... (please)

OH FUCK I FORGOT TO MENTION LUKANUS' DRINK! He is drinking honeydew! It's kind of like drinking cow's milk but weirder (and it has a 'specialness' to it thats kind of like... sparkling cider I guess? Not something you drink all the time.) because it's made by aphids. If you know you know. Its weird to hemipterans and relatives but not weird to most other bugs? Rook's pretty unaffected by it cuz hes a carnivore though so its like. who cares. (Makabris does!! He is SO grossed out rn)

20. Favourite character to write?

In FMA, it’s probably Kimblee. He tends to be my default POV character, because he’s reasonably calm and observant, and I don’t have to do a series of mental contortions about his emotional self-awareness! (Looking at YOU, Envy.) Also, his detached viewpoint on many things can be deeply amusing. You don’t realise how much of ‘normal’ social interaction is logically very strange until you write a character who’s less attached to societal rituals!

In Insektors, Acylius is my favourite character to write. He’s very openly affectionate towards those he cares about, which is always nice to write, and he’s got a fine line in sass when he’s dealing with those he doesn’t. Two of my favourite things in one character!

26. Story you’re most proud of?

...er. You know, I’ve never really sat down and thought about that? Let me think...

Of the stories I’ve written for FMA, I’m most proud of ‘Visiting Hours’. I know I’ve expressed some dissatisfaction of how I handled some things in previous asks, but I still think it’s the best Kimvy that I’ve written so far. One of the difficult things about writing rarepairs, particularly villainous rarepairs, is that there’s a fine line between not putting in enough relationship hints (and therefore not being convincing) and putting in too many (which seems overdone and isn’t convincing either). Kimblee and Envy are particularly tricky in this department because they spend very little time together in canon, so there’s only so much you can suggest in a one-shot. But I think it came together rather well, and got the point across without straying too far into uncharacteristic behavior!

In Insektors, I am most proud of ‘Warning’, the most recent chapter. I don’t often write with OCs (though this is the third time I’ve done so for ‘Blue Roses’), partially because I find it more difficult to keep an OC voice consistent than a canon character. Using Nereida was particularly tricky because there was a lot of history in her attitude towards Acylius that I could only sketch out. But she seems to have been well-received, which is a huge relief! ‘Warning’ is also the story that I feel has best integrated theme and symbolism, so I’m proud of that from a technical perspective as well.

But of all the fics I’ve ever written, I think I’m most proud of a silly FFVII crackfic called ‘Secret Tsviet Dance Parties’. I don’t tend to think of myself as a humor writer, but that one came together really well and was heaps of fun to write. And I felt I managed to keep it basically in character in the process!

38. Do you reread your own stories?

All the time. It serves me as a reminder of what I’ve achieved--I can get quite discouraged by how little I write and post compared to how many ideas I have. I also like to reread things in order to see how the writing ‘ages’. I’m pleased to say that for the most part, I feel pretty content with things even in hindsight. Sure, there are probably things that I would add/cut/alter in every single story, but I haven’t had the feeling of THIS WAS A COMPLETE MISTAKE in a long time, and that’s nice.

Fandom contributions: When I was 11, I used to draw and write horrible Team Rocket art and fanfic, complete with my own terrible self-insert OC. sorry i havent been posting bugs lately. I did not give up I'm just late. day 4's prompt was Lesson, so here's Zarojo trying (and failing) to teach Fulgor how to use a Kolour Cannon. Suzy watches and giggles to herself at Zarojo's outburst, she thinks it's cute.

I haven't posted much of Suzy on here-- she's a queen paper wasp n she has this sorta maternal subtly military role towards the hymenopterans of Flowered City? I saw her in a dream n she primarily exists as a contrast between what Krud military is like versus what Verigreen troops are like. Zarojo is not her child, but she feels a sense of kinship with them and is technically their commander. Verries live in a very pacifistic society so Suzy prefers the diplomatic route, but is not opposed to pelting her foes with pollen if necessary. I don't think she's killed anyone but don't let her warm demeanor and cute appearance fool you, she is a master of psychological warfare.

insektober day 16: Future

its called future cuz Princess Saturn here is actually a fankid design! She's Bakrakra and Lukanus' kid. She's an antlion! She looks a little silly cuz I actually designed her as a baby first n didn't think abt how adult antlions look like discount dragonflies. So to keep her recognizable ish I decided she'd have a few neotenic features like her sharp jaws n "fur" but she'd also have adult features like antennae, (stunted) wings, and a tail. I rlly like her wings, they look like screaming faces.

She seems like she'd be funny! I dont hve much written abt her though because she's not rlly part of my funny rewrite plans, she's just an OC I made because I thought it'd be fun if she existed essentially/thought itd be cute if Lukanus was a parent. He would be so proud of her even though she likes causing problems on purpose <3

I also think her relationship to Queen Bakrakra could be interesting! Not to get too into spoilers for the comic but Max's relationship to the monarchy is complicated so maybe Bakrakra would be happy to have a daughter who's actually passionate abt Krud City? Though Saturn's existence is also kind of scandalous because Bakrakra and Lukanus aren't married!! Or are they? I don't think they are, no. I think Lukanus is just her consort or something. Unofficially. NOT canon lmao. Anyways disregard everything I just said cuz Saturn isnt real unless I SOMEHOW put her in my rewrite which I WONT unless I FEEL LIKE IT IDK

Insektober day 27: Pollen

Ft @emilyrosebug's black widow Verigreen, Violette!! I rlly wanted to draw her n Zarojo having tea together. I also really wanted to draw Violette's house! It fascinates me that Verigreen society is presumably flight dependent and yet Violette lives in it without wings & it made me rlly think abt how she lives as a spider in a bug world! So her home is hyper specialized specifically for her-- it's all one web with several shelves, and the lowest point is the center of the web that holds a table; her dining room! She can't really eat solid food, so the table has indentations that can hold cups and bowls and prevent them from falling, but she doesn't own any plates since she has no need for them.

Zarojo is very comfortable climbing onto Violette's web since they're friends, but I imagine most bugs would be very scared about it! After all, the web's kind of sticky and wobbly, so your average Insektor would probably stumble around and fall over! Or worry about being eaten! But I'm sure Violette only drinks other animal blood, not Insektor blood. She's not a vampire or cannibal! (though IRL black widows TOTALLY eat hymenopterans and weevils and beetles lol. So I guess she and Zarojo do have something in common even though she might eat them irl????)

I like the idea of these 2 being friends cuz they match in a lot of ways I think... I mean, they're both named after colors for one, and they're cute characters based offa scary bugs irl, so they're both a little misunderstood! Zaro is also pretty antisocial n doesn't have a whole lot of friends outside of their sister, so I think it's nice that they n Violette r pals!

Silly design ramblings under the cut:

Fun fact, I have this list of like,,, not rlly canon Insektors design conventions I follow whenever I make a new bug OC and I sometimes break them when I draw others' characters! One of them is that my designs can't/don't have normal eyelashes, which is why the only character I designed that has them, is Unity, who has antennae that look like eyelashes! Anyways so I break this rule every time I draw someone else's Insektors OC cuz it's a funny rule I made up and only I follow it LOL. If you're curious, my other 'conventions' are that the Insektors can't have eyebrows and they can't blush. They also never have accurate limb counts and they have varying eye counts lol. It's always like,, 2 less limbs and however many eyes look good in the design? Like did you know those drops on Zarojo's forehead represent their oceli? Now you do. Max straight up doesn't have oceli! I just reference them whenever I feel like it lol!

Kurkulie convinced Synapse to use the Sky Breaker on the first day of May, so when Nokturno wakes up, she thinks it's the middle of winter! Due to her complicated upbringing (she was raised underwater, then developed her hibernation condition shortly after emerging on land) Nokturno has never seen snow in her entire life!

Insektober 2024 Day 24 - Cure

Violette has been cured of the virus that The Verigreens and Kruds got. It might ask why she's cured. Apparently, Acute Spasmodic dropsy-aviaticus (Allodocrosis in the NA Dub) has a third symptom which only affects arachnids and causes web fluid to become solid, stopping them from creating web or silk.

But She's glad that she'll be making web and silk again.

Insektober 2024 Day 22 - OC

Makria is Wasabi's sister, a hairstreak butterfly who in Chromaverse was lost long ago and reincarnated as a human. In @almightyhamslice rewrite, however, Chromaverse doesn't exist and Makria is alive.

As you know with Kruds, they can't fly and with Krud Butterflies, they usually have their wings down but they can rise them whenever.

Insektober day 29: Reunion

Magus and Kaliko reunite after 18 years. Despite Kaliko being a ghost and Magus being alive, it seems Magus hasn't 'lived' ever since he lost her.

Also can you believe I've never posted a drawing of one of my bug characters crying? Weird to say. But it's not something I think abt often because I don't think anyone in the show is shown doing it... probably cuz its hard to animate LOL. Insektober day 28: Night

Erik and Niff go out to watch a Verigreen fireworks show, but they have to take Moritz with them. Erik's basically the go-to Krud for keeping other Kruds and Verries in custody. They're supposed to be watching for Verigreen activity in suspicion they invade, but they're honestly just enthralled w the lights LOL. They r unironically having a good time. Well, Moritz isn't, but they suppose it's comparatively better, so it feels a little bit good.

I mentioned Moritz briefly in my TDOV post, but it's time I introduced them to you! They're a young assassin bug who's been ostracized from Krud society due to their acid spit. Other Kruds are terrified of them because they think they're unpredictable n don't want to get close, lest they be hurt accidentally or even intentionally. So, they are forced to wear a muzzle that tucks their beak under their jaw, therefore also preventing them from speaking and defending themself. They attempted to learn sign language (or rather, the Insektor version of it since they all only have 3 fingers rather than 5) but Moritz only has 2 fingers, so they were eventually fitted with koal powered prosthetics (which you can see in the TDOV drawing of them!). It's generally seen as 'safe' for them to use koal guns because koal juice is harmless to Kruds, unlike their spit.

Moritz thinks it's unfair. If they can control the weapons strapped to their hands, why can't they be trusted to control their own body? They wish someone would just listen to them talk, but at this point it's been so long they can't even remember the sound of their own voice. It must be so raspy and uneven, from years of disuse.
