The thing about adulting

Every piece of advice you can get about picking a name of a blog will tell you to create it based on something you're passionate about or really good at. So maybe you got on this page looking for some good advice on growing up. In this case I must disappoint you.

"Flashback to the best of guys and best of boyfriends and me in a supermarket. We have stocked up on sweets and snacks and are now desperately searching for something we can make for dinner"

"Flashback to me nearly going crazy because someone asks me when I'll finally get my driver's license"

"Flashback to me asking my dad to read any important looking letter I get to make sure I understood it correctly"

As you can probably tell by now, I am far away from being a very grown up person. Sometimes I just feel like a very awkward young woman, other times like an unsure teenager or a completely ridiculous little kid.

I think the biggest amount of adulting I do is at my job. With the kids there, I never mind being in charge and making some very grown up decisions. Maybe I just have a work persona and a private life persona who are very different from each other, who knows...

Anyways, if I can give any advice on this topic at all, it would be this:

Yes, at a certain age it becomes necessary to be an adult sometimes. But do it only in the smallest necessary amount. There's nothing wrong with still enjoying the things you loved as a kid or building a pillow fort or singing at the top of your lungs in the car. Back at university I had a teacher who always said the true key to happiness is staying in contact with your inner child. It might sound a bit weird but I found it to be very true.

Also don't be ashamed to ask for help. When I was small I used to think the grown ups know everything and can do everything. That is very much not true. So if there's something you need help with, that's more than fine. 

So try to find out which pieces of adulting are necessary and let your inner kid be a happy one.

There’s a reason I keep talking about play—it gets you back into the state of mind you were in when you were at your creative peak. Back when you were five. Now, “peak” is a bit of a misnomer here, because it’s not that you somehow grew out of your creativity biologically.
