i know its partly the nature of critical role as a whole changing for this third campaign, but its SO funny to me that "Dont Trust Anyone Not Even Yourself" Paranoid Chucklefucks The Mighty Nein were showered in kind and helpful guest PC's and ended up So Good at the Magic Of Friendship (threatening). While Bell's Hells of "time for therapy!!!!" "do you think they'll be our friend" "what the fuck is up with that game time!!" have wound up with a like. 40% hit rate for villains in their close friends. like this is a MASSIVE oversimplification and it makes sense but its mostly very funny to me. rip to early campaign m9 you would have loved all of your paranoid instincts constantly paying off in the worst way

watched "the lightning thief" movie for the first time in forever tonight and i think i've finally figured out the main reason the movie rubs me the wrong way.

percabeth.

they completely misunderstood percy and annabeth's relationship.

the movie shows them as an enemies to lovers, with a romantic tension and shoving them towards a romantic plot within literally five seconds of them meeting.

part of it's probably because they picked older actors, but it's just completely wrong.

the wonderful thing about percy and annabeth is their friendship. the friendship that's built from the very start of their meeting, where they dislike each other for all of three seconds before becoming best friends.

a friendship that we don't see any real romance blossoming from until percy's thoughts about annabeth in "sea of monsters" at cc's island, and a friendship we really don't see any real progress in until their kiss in "battle of the labyrinth" at the volcano. (you could definitely argue everything about percy's thoughts in "titan's curse", which is what i view as percy's real turning point towards seeing annabeth in a romantic light)

percabeth doesn't work if they're just automatically pushed into a romantic plot together. it's their friendship that makes us root for them, the way that we know how much they care about each other, but also know that they wouldn't feel so strongly about each other if they didn't start off as such strong friends

anyone who paints percabeth as enemies to lovers and not childhood best friends to lovers i'm sorry but it's just not them

something about nina and inej coming back to ketterdam. it's two-ish years after the ice court, it's summer, the city is as bustling and crazy and as stinking-to-high-hell as the two remember. they're greeted at the shore by an elated jesper and wylan, and a quiet man in the shadows with a secret smile.

something about their drunken nights together at the van eck estate, sharing stories and toasting to matthias. jesper and wylan curled up together in delirious laughter recalling their experiments and meetings, nina sprawled across the floor grinning up at them as she sips her drink, inej giggling and gripping kaz's hand underneath the coffee table.

(his tie is undone, and they've never seen his hair this messy. no one says a word.)

something about their quiet mornings; a note from kaz saying he has business to attend to, but to come by later, and a pile of waffles sat on the counter. nina yawning, wylan rubbing his eyes, jesper watching inej watch the sky. they eat together on the kitchen floor, comfortable silence between them all.

something about inej saying she is heading into the barrel to see the dregs. something about nina saying she will join her, and jesper and wylan sharing a smile.

something about inej and nina turning the corner to where kaz said to meet them, and seeing the sign.

something about the two girls, gazing up at 'The Silver Six' engraved into the sign above the door.

i feel like I've talked about this before but I wish blazblue dipped more into the horror of the situation. Whether you wanna go cosmic or existential both kind of work, though I guess the theme is a bit more despair than horror? Those two feel like they marry together pretty well.

Like. Think of CS. You have Noel, becoming what she always was, something inhuman. Literally screaming and crying after having the truth of the world and the PFDs revealed to her. You have Ragna, also learning the truth, and that he has tried so, so many times and failed every single time. You have Terumi, relishing in the hopelessness that should cause, yet being just as stuck as everyone else, and painfully aware that if he wants out of this hell, he has to claw his way out.

Idk, I just think there's a lot of stuff in blazblue that lends really well to horror. There's already themes about loss of autonomy, just play a little more into that, emphasize the helplessness before the Master Unit, and then the satisfaction of finally being free.

Hell, the Master Unit/Origin still is sympathetic in this interpretation. She's suffering, she's not doing anything out of malice, she just wants to be a person. Not even the Origin is immune to the horror of being a thing, strung up to watch and desperately try for another ending this time. This time, it'll work.
