Interactive Fiction Showcase 2024
Showcase your Game!
The Interactive Fiction Showcase is a year-long "jam" meant to collect and showcase Interactive Fiction games completed in 2024, and show how diverse the Interactive Fiction scene is! And maybe: build more bridges between the community, help people finding their new favourite game/author...
Whether it is long or short, an easy adventure or a complicated puzzle, a strange experiment, a quick creation, or a years-in-the-making game, come show off what you've made!
Are you more of a player? Then, come check this page regularly for new submissions! Maybe leave a rating or a comment too :)
This is an unranked event.
Rules:
The Showcase is open to IF games in all of its forms: kinetic, choice-based, hyperlinks, parser, visual novels... As long as it is Interactive Fiction (there is interactivity and the focus of the game is on the text), the entry will be accepted.
The Showcase is open to IF games in any language.
Entries must be playable and in its complete form when submitted. Completed games in 2024, whose demo was previously public, are welcome. Games submitted to other events (jams/competitions) are welcome.
Entries can include NSFW content, as long as it is indicated in the submission.
Entries should not include any generated AI content - or it will be removed.
Spam or hateful content will be removed.
Creating Interactive Fiction:
Interactive Fiction is a text-based narrative medium, where players can interact with the story in some fashion (input commands, click a link/button, press key). There are many different ways of creating IF, and many different programs to do so. You can find some mentioned below:
Primarily HyperText/Choice-Based: Twine, Ink, ChoiceScript, Dendry
Primarily Parser/Input: Inform 6, Inform 7, PunyInform, Adventuron, ADRIFT
Other: Bitsy, Binksi, Ren'Py
and many more can be found listed in the IF Wiki.
If you are looking for other Interactive Fiction Events, discuss general IF, or ask question, you can visit the IntFiction Forum. (we also have monthly IF events over at @neointeractives)
Interactive Fiction Database and Archive:
IFDB
The IFDB, or Interactive Fiction Database, is an IF game information catalogue, creating a historical record of the IF landscape. The database is a community project, updated by its members, by adding titles to the directory, ratings games, writing reviews... If a listing has not yet been created for your game, please consider making one!
IF Archive
The IF Archive is an archive of Interactive Fiction games, and IF-related elements (walkthroughs, interpreters, articles, collections...). The Archive’s mission is to preserve the history and practice of interactive fiction and make it freely available to the public. If you wish to, you can upload a copy of your game to the IFArchive, through the IFDB listing of your game (recommended) or directly to the archive.
The IFDB and IFArchive, as well as the IntFiction Forum and Twine, are managed by the Interactive Fiction Technology Foundation. These programs are funded through individual donations.
Visual Novel Database
The VNDB, or Visual Novel Database, is a community project that strives to be a comprehensive database for information about visual novels. The database is updated by its members, by adding titles to the directory, ratings games, writing reviews... If a listing has not yet been created for your visual novel, please consider making one!
#interactive fiction showcase#itch io#interactive games#interactive fiction#interactive story#visual novel#IF#VN#IFDB#IFArhive#Sidenote: the real reason was wanting to better keep up with independent releases#(outside of competition/jams) and itch is not great at finding stuff…

Archivist Hypothesis: Vere the Shadowfox
I already talked about this theory in Vere's loresheet, but I'm posting it here as well!
Having re-reviewed [half] the demo, I think that Vere may be umbrakinetic, which Google assures me is the fancy word for being able to control shadows.
In the demo, MC says that Monsters are "inhuman beings with unnatural powers", so being a Monster isn't just a cosmetics thing. While one of Vere's powers is surely having the fluffiest ears and tail in a 100-mile radius, that's not all.
When we first meet Vere—or right before, rather—the MC encounters an oppressive shadowbeast. Though we never see it head on, it's described as “[running] down the street in rivulets” and “[spreading] like ink into blotted shapes.” These shadows form into a threatening being with claws and a muzzle filled with sharp teeth. But, when we turn, there's no giant black monster about to eat them, just this asshole.
And he's got our key, despite being more than an arm's length away. How'd he get a hold of it? Because his shadowfox was literally right up on us two seconds ago—plenty of opportunity to slip a key out of a pocket, especially if you're a shadow and not a physical person.
Not only that, but when Vere smells Kuras on you, “the shadows around him seethe and boil,” like his powers are responding to his decidedly negative emotions about the angel doctor.
This mini-theory seems like an easy shot, so I hope I'm not saying something everyone else already knows 😅 It only just occurred to me on this play-through, since I'm scouring the demo for info for the loresheets and not just drooling over Ais tiddies.
Let me know if you came to the same conclusion, or any other thoughts you have!
#touchstarved game#touchstarved theory#touchstarved vere#vere#archivist hypothesis#i do think he has other powers...#but idk if i have proof#possibly content for another archisis#in the meantime.#i gotta finish the fuckin 5-way split in the demo.#but more archises on the way for sure!#i've got lots of ideas that other people have probably already had

Bye Bye Photoshop
So, yeah, Adobe is pushing the generative AI stuff more and more (and their "ethically sourced" AI engine Firefly uses around 1.25 million Midjourney images in its dataset, e.g. made with scraped stolen art, and opted all of the stock it offers in for training without asking the creators.)
Seeing Kyle T. Webster, the guy who made the 1000 free amazing brushes that PS Creative Cloud users get, quitting PS and being outspoken about his stance against gen AI around social media was an eye opener. (He offers some brushes on Gumroad apart from Adobe as well, thank goodness!)
When I first got Photoshop and switched from Krita to it, I found the brushes incredibly bad and unusable until I got the Kyle's brushes sets. You might say PS only worked for me so long because of Kyle's brushes, and that's not an exaggeration!
Anyway, my annual Photoshop Creative Cloud subscription was about to renew next month on July 6th, my birthday, as it has since 2017. I was already considering switching to something else when I saw it: Clip Studio, on sale for 60% off! I had literally downloaded the demo the week before to try it out and consider whether to invest $54 in a copy to switch from PS.
The perpetual license was under $25 USD now, but the subscription for an entire year was $10.79—cheaper than one month of my Photoshop subscription—and I'm already used to a subscription with constant updates. So I ended up getting the CS subscription and quit PS cold turkey.
So now I'm saving $109/year on art software, not giving money to people contributing to the biggest art theft in human history (literal billions of images scraped), and as a bonus, CS has a great community with tons of free brushes and textures and such up for grabs all the time!
I'm happy to say that all of the PS brushes I've purchased from Gumroad loaded right into CS and work perfectly. All of my Creative Fabrica fonts load in and work perfectly.
To be sure I could use CS before I committed to the switch-over, I whipped up a book cover (cannot tell it's made with anything different than my previous ones), and I illustrated and colored a piece of character art (looks super clean!) I opened PS and copied down my favorite fonts short list (minus the Adobe fonts, of course, which came with my subscription.)
And then I uninstalled Photoshop and Creative Cloud entirely, including their fonts. And it felt good! I sincerely thought switching to CS would be going to slightly worse software to be ethically okay using it, but after getting used to CS and customizing it with some very shiny brush sets (oil paints, watercolors, ink pens, gorgeous pencil, all free), I think it's just as good.
And CS won't shove "generative fill" AI tool garbage at me, or load my account with "generative credits" without ever asking.
It felt so gross logging into Adobe after ages to cancel my subscription and seeing those credits on my account, knowing they offered the option to buy more of them, taking money for things generated by using (among many other things) every art piece I've ever posted in the past 21 years for their scraped dataset training. Good riddance, Adobe!
Anyway, yeah. I'm using Clip Studio Paint now, and I'm excited to get to play with my new brush sets! ♥♥♥
#threshie#threshasketch#rambling#thoughts#if you care about artists please do not use generative ai#it's built on the backs of millions who are ALSO having their jobs replaced by people typing in ai prompts#and it's disgusting#clip studio paint#however#is pretty awesome#♥

Mr. Victor Shade, SWORD's leading expert on AI, aka The Vision's mundane alias.
More concept work for my comic plans, where after Westview Vision is found by Monica, Darcy, and Jimmy who help him build a life and remember who he is. Monica offers him a job at SWORD with Hayward out of the way, to reform it and return it to her mother's vision (pardon the pun). Vision helps out with this process, because who better to be watching and ensuring there is ethical treatement of AI and other 'sentient weapons' than the most advanced synthetic being on Earth? It will also give him an opportunity to explore who he is, and how he ended up being turned into Hayward's weapon in WandaVision.
(I have no affiliation with Marvel/the MCU - this is purely a fan project, and I know if we get Vision Quest as a series it will likely go in a very different direction. That's the joy of the Multiverse though - anything is possible, and I love telling *my* Vision's story through art and my stories.)
Breakdown of my process below the cut, as this was painted as a quick demo for a friend asking about how I do things and I enjoyed it enough to finish it:
My process has changed a little over the years but remains roughly the same. The level of depth and detail just means more hours refining the painting down more and more with additional layers and passes of light, shadow, and texture.
Before I start a piece, even just sketches to unwind, I gather reference. Sometimes I'll just see a photo I like of Paul/Lizzie, or sometimes an unrelated image where the pose or lighting or ambience speaks to me. I also use my collection for reference - my statues and Hot Toy figuresm to get the right lighting and angles, especially for Vision and all his robot lines (though admittedly these days I don't always use a reference and just go from memory...I think I draw this silly robot too much).
Once I've got a concept and some references gathered I set up my canvas. Currently I use CSP and I love it, and I have a variety of texture files I've purchased that mimic different types of paper. I like working on these as it feels more natural with the pencil, ink, and marker brushes I use. Once I have my references set up in the file I'll do a rough sketch, blocking out proportions and basic shapes. I'll set a mid-tone grey background as well, and I almost always sketch in color. I like choosing a color that represents the character for me - bright blue for Vizh, red for Wanda. I have a Loki sketch I need to finish for my sister and I used green for him. It helps me capture the 'energy' of the character, and this sketch remains a part of the finished painting even as I refine.
Once I've got a rough sketch down I'll start working on more detail. Sometimes this will be inks, sometimes just another pass with pencil. Depends on the piece and what I'm going for. This step can happen multiple times for complicated paintings, and usually I'll cycle through steps 2-6 multiple times for a large piece.
Once I have the lines down I'll paint flats. Most of the time I'm using a big brush that emulates a marker, because I like the texture it gives, especially when layered. I'm very mess and use an eraser brush to clean up the lines, and sometimes I'll go back and tweak the line art until I like the look. During this phase I'll also lay down some details - freckles, scars, details like eyes, tattoos, jewelry as well. When painting Vizh I like getting the texture in his robotic eyes done early on, and usually refine them again towards the end.
The real fun starts here - I'll block in my lighting, usually just going with whaveter I'm feeling in the moment. I like playing with gradients and layering them in different ways to create a more dynamic image, and then I start blocking in shadows with soft brushes.
More lighting. I start adding top layers to further stretch the dynamic. I like overlays, and adding a sort of dreamlike/surreal filter through the color. I'll also start adding in highlights to contrast the shadows and work in small sections to render the details. I always start big and decrease my brush sizes for detail and work in layers and stages, checking the reference as well as the painting's lighting (which is not always the same as my reference) as I go.
Texture texture texture. I like texture. This step sometimes happens earlier, but once I'm happy with my actual *painting* of my subject(s) I'll start figuring out background elements and textures for visual appeal.

Labelexpo Americas 2024 features launches and live demos
In a conversation with Packaging South Asia, Tasha Ventimiglia, group director - Labelexpo Americas 2024, spoke about the highlights of the ongoing show at Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, Chicago. FlexPack@Labelexpo is an inclusive feature with the show for flexible packaging and shrink sleeves, which will allow attendees entering this high-value market to see the latest equipment and materials from leading industry suppliers in the flex pack sector.
“Attendees and exhibitors are witnessing the latest innovations shaping the future of the label and package printing industry — including sustainable material solutions, short-run flexible packaging, workflow automation, and radio frequency identification (RFID) technology,” Ventimiglia said. “There are hundreds of live demonstrations showcasing the latest digital printing technologies and flexo press technology, finishing equipment, materials, inks, and preproduction systems.”
There is a Label Academy masterclass on flexible packaging and a workshop on RFID Technology for Label Converters, aligning with the key trends to be seen at the show. This series will provide attendees with expert guidance on entering or expanding their label production into new, lucrative markets, adding value, and streamlining their current operations.
She adds, “In addition, there was an expanded networking opportunity that included a converter leadership lunch taking place on 10 September. The lunch featured a high-level converter leadership panel discussion, followed by a delegate Q&A, alongside networking time with peer CEOs and thought leaders from major converting groups. A keynote breakfast on 11 September will include a high-level keynote session on automation and AI followed by an expert-led panel discussion, alongside an exclusive networking opportunity with industry leaders.”
At the Innovation Stage, exhibitors got the opportunity to showcase their latest technologies in a series of 20-minute presentations. Labelexpo Americas witnessed the introduction of two highly automated mid-web 26-inch flexo presses targeted at short-run flexible packaging, wraparound, in-mold, and shrink-sleeve labels.
Mark Andy launched the new P-Series S9 flexo press – available in both 22-inch and 26-inch versions - as well as digital and hybrid equipment and Nilpeter demonstrated a 26-inch FA-26 for the first time in the US. HP demonstrated its mid-web format 200k press for the first time at Labelexpo Americas with an add-on slitter to allow label converters to print PS labels and slit inline before finishing off-line. Other new launches include Canon’s prototype water-based inkjet press, the LabelStream SL2000, and the Durst Kjet hybrid press – both machines only seen before at drupa.
“There is more equipment on the show this year than we had in the past,” Ventimiglia says. “This includes new, wider flexo presses, hybrid technology including the new Durst KJet and Mark Andy IQR configured with a 2200 press frame and Domino N610i print engine. The new FlexPack@Labelexpo exhibition, co-located with Labelexpo Americas 2024 focussed on the complete production chain for flexible packaging from materials selection to laminating and pouch-making. This is also the first show to feature the RFID Experience. This is particularly well timed to show label converters how to meet the Walmart RFID mandate, as well as new retail applications from Amazon.”
She explained that the key challenges for label converters include increasing competition, increasing costs of materials, energy, and labor, the difficulty in finding skilled operators, and consolidation amongst end users (brand owners) and suppliers. She says, “The answer to most of these challenges is to automate the converting operation and reduce energy usage and waste – particularly the waste created during the changeover between jobs. At the same time, converters have the opportunity to diversify into higher value-added markets and applications including flexible packaging and RFID/smart labels. At Labelexpo Americas all these key challenges and opportunities will be addressed by exhibitors on the show floor and at educational and networking events.”
According to the group director, the labels industry continues to grow on average at two percentage points above GDP growth in all global markets. This is true for all label formats including pressure-sensitive and wet glue (glue applied) labels. In-mold labels are also growing, albeit at a slightly lower rate, and shrink sleeves remain the fastest-growing label category. New technology developments, including digital embellishment, wider presses, and hybrid machines open up new opportunities for label converters to add value to all these label formats, allowing them to escape from commodity label production where the most intense competition lies and increase profitability.

Process: Experimental Piece
Background:
One of the most common ways that people have experienced Xenolalia was after an incident that took their consciousness away or a rare phenomenon called "foreign language syndrome," which was reported of people speaking in a language they are not familiar with while asleep during the REM phase.
Whether these individuals went to comatose, temporary brain anesthesia, or brain injury, when they woke up they forgot their mother tongue and spoke a foreign language (without any educational background) or remembered their first language along with xenolalia.
Concept:
For my experimental piece, I had the idea to show this phenomenon related to Xenolalia through an abstract approach.
After explaining my concept to my classmates, using the feedback, I came up with the idea of writing a poem that's written by the person who's experiencing Xenolalia. The poem is written from his own perspective.
Then, here, it will get more interesting that while this poem is being written on paper, the script starts to change (translates) in the middle of the line as he's experiencing Xenolalia.
Original poem:
In whispers from a distant star, I hear words unknown, beyond comprehension. Their beauty enthrals, yet their meaning eludes me, slipping through my grasp like shifting sand. Each syllable a mystery, I struggle to understand, but in the midst of this confusion, I feel a sense of wonder. Suddenly, the words change, it's as if a door has opened to a new world, where the words fade into memory, and the new ones take their place effortlessly, like a long-forgotten melody resurfacing in my mind.
The handwritten script:
This was executed so that while the script was switching, the previous script would get closer to the next script, creating bad handwriting as a sign that the script was changing. There are also some inks faded between the scripts purposely to connect and blend them together.
Later I made a demo/concept poster by photography, editing the photos, layering images and the poem on it:
Here are the original images without the poem:
Concept Development:
After the first draft presentation, I received two main pieces of feedback that slightly changed the direction of this project.
In all of my projects so far, I have shown written forms of Xenolalia (2D, 4D), spoken forms of Xenolalia (4D), and visual forms (3D). The only form of Xenolalia I have not yet interpreted is auditory, which shows this concept by engaging the viewer's sense of hearing.
This project can be in a live format in which the texts are being written down, and the script switches while being written - if audio is involved, it will switch along with the scripts as well.
Ideas based on this feedback:
Making the audio component in web format, providing headphones, and having voices played in different languages along with the script. Users can interact by pausing the particular audio and listening to the rest.
Reversed vocal line
Change of colour in the back of the webpage
Visualizing the audio using every sound's frequency
Execution:
Since I wanted one voice to say the poems in all different languages, my voice actress had trouble speaking different scripts as the accent was not accurate and proper. An amazing tool that helped speed up this process and created a professional series of audios in different languages was rask.ai, an online AI Text-to-Speech tool that can translate into different languages and dub using your voice.
Using JavaScript, CSS, and HTML5, I created the web format, functions, and audio visualizer graph. After recording the poem in English, the AI completed the entire process for me, and I entered the audio files.

Sempre dopo 4 anni, in piena pandemia, arriva Solar power.
Allow me to set the scene
When I met you I’d never done ecstasy
Just a girl with a dream
Remember?
Back then I still had my wisdom teeth
In my head, just a girl in the night
In the bed I would still fake a scream of pleasure
But can you see now?
That girl is a woman so call a stretch limousine
For her desires and demons, you don't know what she's seen
There are ghosts that she hides
But you know all she wants is to get down
Every night, the silver moon, it changes
Can you say the same? Do you stay the same?
Can you change with me? Can I be honest?
Can I press where it hurts, my baby?
I wanna ride with you
Feels like the AC is broken
I said something that touched a nerve
You blow up and I go dark
The way my mother does
The angels cry for us
Baby, when the moon is gleamin'
With your heart open, breathe in
I would never dream of leavin'
In Solar power Lorde ci aveva guidato in paesaggi estivi, in un distacco propedeutico all’auto preservazione.
