The CDC’s Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) will meet virtually August 22, and infection control guidelines for healthcare settings will be reviewed. Our community and advocacy groups have pressured HICPAC to strengthen infection control recommendations and include broader expertise on the committee. As a direct result of this advocacy, CDC sent HICPAC’s proposed infection control guidelines back for more review and expanded representation on the committee, including a member of National Nurses United on the Isolation Workgroup. We must keep pressure up to ensure infection control for aerosol-transmitted infectious diseases is strengthened, not weakened.
Despite a legal obligation to request public comments on the draft and despite ongoing calls for more transparency, HICPAC has not opened a public comment period in the Federal Register. HICPAC has limited oral comments from the public to 45 minutes, so many registrants will be excluded.
Since many politicians are campaigning for our votes this year, it’s prime time to write to your elected officials to insist HICPAC be made accountable to the public. You can use our Action Network campaign to simultaneously 1) write a public comment to CDC/HICPAC and 2) alert your elected officials that healthcare needs much stronger isolation and infection control precautions, including universal masking.
Amid this summer’s nationwide COVID surge, the CDC has acknowledged that COVID spreads year round, including in summer, and that emergence of new variants leads to unpredictable patterns of spread. However, the draft infection control guidance continues to threaten rollbacks in the use of N95 respirators for aerosol-transmitted pathogens and further weaken isolation protocols and related guidance. Despite the demonstrated benefits of universal masking in healthcare settings in the ongoing COVID pandemic, HICPAC’s draft guidance fails to integrate this lesson to prevent avoidable healthcare-acquired infections.
Use our Action Network campaign below by clicking on the blue button to write to your elected officials and CDC’s HICPAC asking them to make HICPAC accountable to the public and share your concerns about the need for universal masking and clear isolation protocols by August 22, 2024.
Send Letter to Govt Officials/HICPAC
How to use the universal masking infection control letter template
Click through to Action Network and edit the letter as you wish (or write your own using the letter for inspiration or talking points). Note: The White House and many elected officials set a 2000 character limit.
Personalize your comment with a brief statement on how the lack of universal masking in healthcare has impacted your life or your community. For example:
Delayed or missed medical appointments
Unsafe experiences, such as with workers or other patients who showed symptoms of COVID or other aerosol-transmitted infectious diseases
Infections or potential exposures that occurred in healthcare settings
Challenges faced in asking healthcare workers to mask
Disproportionate impacts of the lack of masking in healthcare on high-risk patients and marginalized communities
Letter template:
Dear Elected Official and Members of HICPAC:
CDC’s Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) is meeting August 22 about major revisions to infection control guidance. Though legally obliged to accept public comment, it has not made draft guidelines public or posted them to the Federal Register. I urge you to act to require HICPAC to open public comment for its August meeting and going forward.
Most importantly, HICPAC’s most recent draft guidelines would seriously weaken infection control, and prioritize healthcare profits over patient and healthcare worker health. Healthcare should not make us sick.
I urge you to press HICPAC to strengthen CDC infection control guidance in line with scientific data. HICPAC must establish universal masking in healthcare as a new standard of infection control across all settings for the following reasons:
Many healthcare exposures to aerosol-transmitted infectious diseases (including COVID, measles, influenza and TB) are preventable through multiple mitigation measures including isolation procedures, universal masking, ventilation, and air purification.
Many aerosol-transmitted pathogens are transmissible without symptoms and without predictable seasonality. Diagnosis and isolation may be delayed, leading to exposures that could have been prevented by universal masking.
Well-fitting N95 respirators or better masks provide both protection for the wearer and source control. One-way masking has limited protection; masks should ideally be worn by all to reduce transmission. Hospitals should distribute N95 grade masks to visitors and staff.
Universal masking protects patients when they cannot mask (such as infants, people with specific medical conditions and procedures involving the nose or mouth).
When masking is only on request, people are unprotected in many shared spaces such as lobbies and waiting rooms.
In addition to universal masking, HICPAC must recommend layered mitigations in all types of healthcare facilities: higher HVAC standards, clear robust isolation protocols to separate infectious people from others – including by routinely testing staff and patients for COVID and other infectious diseases, isolating and cohorting infectious patients, and keeping staff with an active infection away from healthcare facilities and in-person patient contact.
Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter.

Did you know that there has been an insane shortage of coconuts in the caribbean these past 10 years? Having one these days have become such a treat. Struggling to keep my last living tree (out of over 200) alive. Lethal yellowing is a devastating disease that affects palms including coconuts. It is caused by a phytoplasma, specialized bacteria that are transmitted between plants by insect vectors. This disease gets its name from the yellowing and drooping of palm fronds beginning with the lower fronds and advancing up through the crown. The most practical long term solution to controlling lethal yellowing is by replacing with resistant cultivars. So keep an eye on trees that aren’t being infected to propagate future plants from. Chemical control can also be achieved by the application of the antibiotic oxytetracycline HCl (often referred to as OTC) administered to palms by liquid injection into the trunk. #growninhaiti #yellowing #coconut #disease #plantpathogens #haiti #ayiti #tropicalamerica #infectious #control #propagation #palm https://www.instagram.com/p/CltCO0LuNr8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

For sake of avoiding fueling any additional stigma and misinformation, I will be referring to the virus as Mpox. A former label was used to spread both, and also targeted language and attacks directed at the LGBTQIA+ community. Furthermore associating countries with a virus or bacteria is unhelpful, discriminatory, bigoted, and stigmatizing.
Prevention
Hand washing alone is not sufficient to disinfect skin, surfaces, clothing or linens, or control disease.
Please handle suspected contaminated items or surfaces with sterile gloves. Fomite transmission is one of several ways one can contract Mpox.

- Cover skin lesions best as possible to minimize risk of contact if you have suspected or confirmed case (e.g. long sleeves, trousers/long pants)
*This may be good advice for those who don't have a case of mpox to avoid exposure. Also avoiding surfaces with high traffic usage and sanitizing whenever said surfaces possible.
- Persons with suspected/confirmed mpox diagnosis should not leave the home except to seek health care.
And isolated in a room from other family members where possible
- Laundry (e.g., linen and clothing), dishes and all contaminated surfaces wash — hot water, detergent, and disinfectant (0.5% sodium hypochlorite solution)
*How to prepare sodium hypochlorite: https://archive.cdc.gov/www_cdc_gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/downloads/Appendix4.pdf
- Gloves to avoid direct contact with lesions (dispose after each use)
All pet owners should maintain personal hygiene, advised sanitation practices and report any suspicious animals to the local vet authority
Anyone infected with mpox should avoid contact with animals, especially monkeys, rats, and squirrels
PPE should be worn by all individuals that care for pets
End to the use of non-human monkeys in circuses
Use rodent control measures
The following guidelines should be considered and adopted in community settings.
More information including about prevention I highly recommend reading!

It is important to note while there is an Mpox vaccine, the Democratic Republic of Congo along with other African nations experience medical and public health apartheid. It will be critical to advocate for all countries to have equitable and ample vaccinations access.
These nations are valiant and unmatched in their efforts to combat disease spread, and they should not have to deal with racism. I'm certain some will try to blame the DRC and other countries where cases are cropping up. This is vilifying, racist, xenophobic, and privileged nonsense that must be spoken out against.

I hope this isn’t jinxing myself as I mentally prepare for surgery today.
I am an epidemiologist and expert in various science fields, and I’ve only gotten COVID once in my life.
I don’t put my health or others at risk as much as I can help it.
Obviously I’m masking in hospitals still.
And my ex-spouse was wrong, ignorant, smeared my name to their friends, accused me of DARVO, told me that they would never treat their own health the way I did while shaming me (despite them LITERALLY AVOIDING THEIR OWN HEALTH ISSUES), etc.
My brain was so warped by them.
I’m almost positive they haven’t gotten boosters.
Not that it matters to me anymore.
They abused me, and they think I abused them.
I’m involuntarily ruminating about this because I had to go off my meds to prep for surgery and because trauma flashbacks are happening.
I will never let anyone disrespect me like that ever again.

The Bronx Zoo has just released Flaco's necropsy results.
He was not thriving, as the people championing the ideal of "freedom" claimed.
He was poisoned.
He was sick.
He was suffering.
"Freedom" would have eventually killed him. A building just happened to do it first.
"Postmortem testing has been completed for Flaco, the Eurasian eagle owl that was found down in the courtyard of a Manhattan building a little over a year after his enclosure at the Central Park Zoo was vandalized on February 2, 2023. Onlookers reported that Flaco had flown into a building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on February 23, 2024, and acute trauma was found at necropsy. Bronx Zoo veterinary pathologists determined that in addition to the traumatic injuries, Flaco had two significant underlying conditions. He had a severe pigeon herpesvirus from eating feral pigeons that had become part of his diet, and exposure to four different anticoagulant rodenticides that are commonly used for rat control in New York City. These factors would have been debilitating and ultimately fatal, even without a traumatic injury, and may have predisposed him to flying into or falling from the building. The identified herpesvirus can be carried by healthy pigeons but may cause fatal disease in birds of prey including owls infected by eating pigeons. This virus has been previously found in New York City pigeons and owls. In Flaco’s case, the viral infection caused severe tissue damage and inflammation in many organs, including the spleen, liver, gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow, and brain.   No other contributing factors were identified through the extensive testing that was performed. Flaco’s severe illness and death are ultimately attributed to a combination of factors—infectious disease, toxin exposures, and traumatic injuries—that underscore the hazards faced by wild birds, especially in an urban setting."
The naturalistic fallacy kills animals in horrible ways. The romanticism of what humans want to think of as a "free, wild, pure life" cannot be allowed supplant the reality of injury, sickness, and death. Releasing captive animals (or keeping them from being recaptured) because it's "better" for them to suffer untethered than live a healthy, safe, captive life is inhumane and horrific.
Flaco's life didn't have to end in pain, sickness, and suffering.
Flaco's death didn't have to be tragic.
But once the idea of "freedom" entered the chat, Flaco's fate was unavoidable.

The Unseen Fallout: How COVID-19 is Undermining Decades of Global Health Progress
Tumblr media
The COVID-19 pandemic has not only unleashed a deadly virus upon the world but has also initiated a cascading effect, jeopardizing decades of progress in global health. While the immediate focus has been on containing and managing the virus, the broader consequences on healthcare systems, vaccination programs, and various public health initiatives are alarming. In this article, we delve into the unseen fallout of the pandemic, exploring the setbacks it has imposed on the achievements made in global health over the years.
The Disruption of Healthcare Systems
One of the most significant consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the disruption of healthcare systems worldwide. As hospitals and medical facilities shifted their focus towards handling the surge of COVID-19 cases, routine medical care and treatments for other ailments have been severely impacted. Elective surgeries have been postponed, routine check-ups canceled, and non-COVID patients have faced difficulties accessing essential medical services. This disruption not only caused undue suffering to patients but also created backlogs that may take years to clear, potentially leading to avoidable complications and increased mortality rates.
Threats to Vaccination Programs
Vaccination programs, which have been pivotal in eradicating and controlling deadly diseases, faced significant challenges during the pandemic. Lockdowns, travel restrictions, and fear of exposure led to decreased vaccine coverage, leaving vulnerable populations at risk. Childhood immunization rates dropped, leading to the resurgence of preventable diseases like measles and polio in some regions. Additionally, the diversion of healthcare resources to combat COVID-19 affected vaccine production and distribution, delaying efforts to reach global vaccination targets.
Struggles in Maternal and Child Health
The pandemic has particularly impacted maternal and child health initiatives, jeopardizing the progress made in reducing maternal mortality rates and improving child survival. Pregnant women faced increased risks, both due to the virus itself and the limited access to antenatal care. Furthermore, disruptions in healthcare systems hindered childbirth services, causing complications for expectant mothers and newborns. The pandemic highlighted the importance of safeguarding maternal and child health programs to protect vulnerable populations during crises.
Mental Health Crisis Amidst the Pandemic
While the immediate focus was on physical health, the pandemic triggered an alarming mental health crisis worldwide. The prolonged isolation, fear, grief, and uncertainty led to a surge in mental health disorders. Many people grappled with anxiety, depression, and other psychological challenges as they coped with the impacts of the pandemic. Unfortunately, mental health support and services were often inadequately equipped to handle the surge in demand. The strain on mental health caused by the pandemic is likely to have lasting effects, demanding greater attention and investment in mental healthcare.
The Inequality Amplifier
COVID-19 has laid bare the stark inequalities in global health. Vulnerable populations, including low-income communities, racial minorities, and marginalized groups, have borne the brunt of the pandemic's impact. Disparities in access to healthcare, education, and basic amenities have exacerbated the spread of the virus and its consequences. Moreover, the pandemic's economic fallout has disproportionately affected those already facing social and economic hardships, further widening the gap between the haves and have-nots.
Backsliding in Infectious Disease Control
Before the pandemic, significant progress had been made in controlling various infectious diseases like HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. However, the diversion of resources and attention to COVID-19 has led to setbacks in the fight against these diseases. Interruptions in testing, diagnosis, and treatment programs have contributed to resurgences and the potential development of drug resistance. The gains made in combating these deadly diseases are now at risk of being reversed.
Global Health Diplomacy and Cooperation
The pandemic has exposed the critical importance of global health diplomacy and cooperation. The virus knows no borders, and international collaboration is essential to combatting its spread effectively. However, the pandemic has strained relationships between nations, with some resorting to vaccine nationalism and hoarding essential medical supplies. Such actions not only hinder equitable vaccine distribution but also undermine global efforts to control the virus and its variants.
Rebuilding a Resilient Global Health Landscape
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, there is hope for rebuilding a resilient global health landscape. As the world slowly recovers from the immediate impacts of COVID-19, there is an urgent need for governments, organizations, and individuals to come together and address the systemic issues highlighted during the crisis.
Key areas that demand attention include strengthening healthcare systems to ensure they can handle future crises without compromising routine medical care. Equitable access to healthcare and vaccination programs must be prioritized to bridge the gaps in global health inequalities. Special attention must be given to maternal and child health, mental healthcare, and infectious disease control, which have been disproportionately impacted.
Furthermore, fostering global health diplomacy and cooperation is crucial to establish a coordinated response to future health emergencies. Learning from the pandemic, nations must commit to open communication, knowledge sharing, and resource allocation to tackle global health challenges collectively.
Conclusion
The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the fragility of global health progress. The unseen fallout threatens to undo decades of hard-won achievements, amplifying existing disparities and vulnerabilities. However, it also presents an opportunity for governments, organizations, and individuals to rethink their priorities, address systemic issues, and build a more resilient global health landscape. By working together, we can ensure that the setbacks caused by the pandemic become a catalyst for positive change, propelling us towards a healthier, more equitable world for all.

Aspects To Consider While Launching A Cleanroom
Tumblr media
In general a cleanroom is a place or a specific area of a known amount of space that is normally used in scientific research sectors. These cleanrooms are supposed to have a controlled level of airborne impurities such as dust, microbes, undesirable vapours and other similar contaminants. Nevertheless creating a cleanroom involves many aspects that are to be considered. The specifications basically involve the types of applications the room will operate on, equipment that may be needed, the maintenance that may be required and so on. Preferred extensively in sectors like semiconductor manufacturing, life sciences and other fields where in environmental contamination must be totally curbed, cleanrooms vary in size and areas where they can be very large or medium sized, depending on their utilities. Since the foremost intention is to supply clean air into the specific area, air that is allowed to enter a cleanroom must be subjected to accurate and meticulous filtration and must be constantly recirculated through advanced devices like high efficiency particulate air filters, in order to eliminate most of the airborne contaminants. Another most important aspect to consider is the entry and exit of staff or the concerned research scholars. To achieve the control of contaminants that may pollute the environment allowing personnel through airlocks or air showers must be done. Likewise, wearing protective clothing, face masks, safety boots and other allied equipment that help to minimise air contamination are the next set of things that are to be considered. HVAC systems must be installed in such a way that they consistently control humidity levels. Electrostatic discharges are another aspect that has to be considered and sufficient precautionary measures must be enforced to avert this kind of electrostatic charges.
