#dudunsparce#i was convinced for a significant amount of time after this pokémon was revealed that its name was dundunsparce#and that everyone who said it “dudunsparce” was just reading it wrong. and that‚ in fact‚ i was infallible and could never read something#incorrectly. i think it would be funny if i then said “and then yesterday i got diagnosed with dyslexia” but i have not been#i think i was just momentarily extremely confident in something that was not true#anyway. that one youtuber who hunted for 8000 years to get a shiny three-segment form i think?

#Fifteen episode 2. Mmmmmmhhhhhh#The animation quality DOES get worse. This episode shows it lol#So many static frames stretching for so long... I feel so sorry for the animators.#I still stand by the fact that if studios can't provide enough budget or time to their animators seasons simply shouldn't be released.#But after all who am I to talk...#The scene of Dazai shooting at the soldier makes my blood freeze. Rimbaud throwing books in the fire is equally upsetting#Like I /know/ it's an anime about literature with constant metafiction references–#and that this too has a symbolic meaning and is *supposed* to be upsetting but that said.#Seeing whole books being thrown in the fire is such a disturbing sight that calls for such a visceral response in me 😭😭😭#The amv opening is nice! Makes me even more bitter about season 5 one lmao. Of the kind#“not only we had to get a amv opening (((while we deserved a wholly ss/kk focused opening)))‚ we even got a bad amv ending at that”#Mmmmhhhh I hateeeeeee how they handled the Sheep 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Seriously this is just another bug instance of#“me and the author have WHOLLY different views of what human nature is like”#I just... Don't think... Children joining together in an hostile environment would act like that. I'm so much more of a t/pn kind of guy.#Children who come together to survive would protect each other and especially would trust each other. Why is there such a big lack of trust#Why doesn't Shirase trust Chuuya? Why doesn't Chuuya trust Shirase (with handling more information)? It's just dumb#It's dumb. It sounds stupid from the very plot aspect that Chuuya would act so shady and suspicious with the Sheep instead of being open–#about what his course of action is. It's like he was trying to have them turn on him. It's stupid of Shirase to mistrust Chuuya–#when in eight years he never gave them any reason to doubt of him.#And I know right as I'm writing this that someone is going to read it and think “you're completely missing on the unbalance of power that–#creates these dynamics of lack of trust” but the thing is exactly that I don't see why that unbalance of power would ever come to be!#They're all just kids. They're aware of that. If Chuuya never had malicious intentions towards Shirase‚ I don't see why he would ever fear–#his betrayal. Likewise‚ I don't see why Shirase and the other Sheep members would ever be so manipulative and disrespectful towards–#Chuuya if he's been nothing but kind to them (and we have no reason to think otherwise)?#It all comes down to: I think people are inherently good and willing to help each other. The author thinks not lmao. It is what it is#But I wish you could see t/pn. Where kids are constantly trying to outwit each other in order to OUT-SACRIFICE THEMSELVES for the others lo#I love t/pn it's my life... I miss it#random rambles#And if anyone would like to argue that Dazai specifically set them off to betray each other... Yes I DO understand that's what the story–#is suggesting. I just don't think Dazai - for how good. and infallible he is - is enough to scrape long-term relationships of trust.

See the further irony is:
That in using 'Mall Goth Sauron' as the take on Dark Willow over 'misogynist has character randomly killed for LULZ' it also allows for greater accountability on the one hand and for Season 7 to thematically focus on repairing all this damage in the midst of facing an enemy of shadows reliant on lies to further itself. The only way to break the Druj is the absolute Truth in a very Zoroastrian sense. Characters don't get to neatly skip past accountability for their actions, and this would spiral over into further later seasons with the essential reality that in an otherwise lower-level setting this one random girl from California is a Dark Phoenix-tier reality warper and the most powerful person on the planet, or the universe.
And the questions of how that power could and should be employed on the one hand and that Willow is essentially a Doctor Strange type who beats up Gods and Eldritch Abominations for her regular line of work where her counterparts deal with the more 'street level' crises would in turn be the logical conclusion of where the show ends. She doesn't do as much physical fighting for the same reason that Stephen Strange never uses magic to go punch the Hulk in the face, her narrative role is ultimately that of Sorceress Supreme of Earth, with literally nobody in an ancient established war anticipating that this one random ginger from California was and is the new Sorceress Supreme and that if they had had such awareness the realities are that this power would and could have taken worse forms.
Unfortunately for the world, the reality too is that it is a shy computer geek who has a not at all subtle dark side and the usual teenage anxieties and insecurities given the equivalent of being able to reliably actually do things other people might dream of but can never do.
But again as long as Dawn Summers being a good thing is a narrative convention that's established memory magic is a poor choice to show the corrupting effects of reality-warping. It's a case of 'yes as established in canon all of this is true for that one season but then they decided to retcon it, so the fans are not obligated to care about it any more than the canon does about this itself.'
#willow rosenberg#tara maclay#dawn summers#you will never convince me as long as Dawn Summers is a plot device that 'memory magic unforgivable' is anything but bad writing#it was the choice used but there are other equally toxic things that could have been done instead#the basic theme of 'very powerful person decides things for another in an abusive fashion' works just as well without it#Tara's growth arc in refusing to tolerate abuse even from the person who brought her out of her shell can stand perfectly fine#it works even better with a budding Sauron than abruptly deciding 'wholesale memory rewrites good retail unforgivable.'#killing Tara off also denies her any sense of closure or ability to get that closure with the person who does this#the entire element here with the way things went down is bad writing from Point A to point Z#and it's also easily forgotten but Tara wasn't in fact intended to be Willow's love interest#she was replacement Willow for sympathy points#her entire arc as such became Willow X Tara but it was a choice from actor chemistry#So in giving Tara a role besides 'Willow's Girlfriend' it arguably does better by her character#tara x willow#btvs#and yes yes the 'scale changes things' argument is true but only to a point#it's really no different to introduce Dawn than what Willow did#if the retail is wrong so is the wholesale and the decisions to make this that point of no return is an avoidable mistake#plus honestly imagine a Season 7 Tara going 'sweetie no' and a Season 7 Willow dealing with those consequences in real time#equally one can have Tara's cold turkey approach stick exactly as it was#and serve as her role in the time bomb because she's a product of an abusive family and not an infallible moral guide#she rightly sees the problem and at least tries to address it when nobody else did#but unfortunately her solution was pouring gasoline on the fire and then vacating the range where the fire would burn#still further between that and Willow being human enough to resent being told to take that pain and do it going it alone#there'd be plenty of reasons for a surviving Tara and Willow to spend season 7 broken up as is#Tara would not at all be wrong to be wary and not want to touch reformed Sauron with a 400 foot pole#Willow equally would resent someone whose bad advice helped create the problem and who evades any recognition thereof#good old fashioned drama with entirely human motives

gang i'm gonna be honest, rook obviously fucked up but I have never and likely will never think Solas knows exactly what he's doing at any given time. This is an insanely intelligent man that bats like 800. he has a really high volume of success but his fuckups are craaaazy fuck-ups, and they tend to happen when he does the biggest shit possible. I don't buy that that ritual was gonna go off without a hitch.
#Also Solas not being infallible in terms of his knowledge honestly just makes him a better character for me#I actually like him more knowing that he's fucking insanely intelligent#But also has an ego complex that tells him he is the sole person that can solve a problem#Despite the fact that his greatest moment of intelligence was his greatest failure#but hey that's just me

Man. All I do these days is fail to meet expectations and then get upset at myself for failing to meet those expectations. This sucks.
#the dragon sings his songs#blowing out smoke#i'm supposed to be taking this break from my course as an opportunity to do the things I've been meaning to do and I've just been rotting—#—in bed on my phone and sleeping in and jacking off like i hardly even get up to eat or go to the bathroom#side note i know this is a textbook sign of depression and burnout (comma) most likely both (comma) but who in my Chinese family is going—#—to believe that? def not mom who'll just scream at me for not sucking it up and pushing through it and not dad who won't do shit#my grandparents might believe me but there's a language barrier on mom's side plus 公公 seems to think I'm the perfect infallible capable—#—[granddaughter] and I can't bear to break his heart with the truth#and then on dad's side they'll probably be sympathetic but everything i tell them makes its way back to my parents and that'll just result—#—in ont huge blowup that'll drive another wedge between mom and dad. and I mean PLEASE hurry up and get divorced but I also don't want 爺爺—#—and 嫲嫲 to get caught in the crossfire#plus I'm supposed to be helping them esp now that 爺爺 is running out of time as an active able-bodied person but instead of doing that I—#—spent all day in bed. which is not helping my guilt and shame on top of everything else i have to deal with (comma) let alone his workload#today's such a nice sunny beautiful day too which makes me feel even worse for not even going for a walk or anything#it's still light out so i could but sunk cost fallacy is kicking my ass plus i have Mandarin class kn a couple hours#and k know it's a couple HOURS but I'd have to get dressed and set a timer and everything and just the thought is so overwhelming that I—#—just can't. i'd ask to be institutionalized if it wasn't for the rampant ableism in the mental health field plus the fact that—#—institutionalization is just an extension of incarceration#if only the people who have power over me would just listen and actually take care of me so i wouldn't have pushed myself to this point

Hussie is not an infallible genius, and Act Six in particular is FULL of continuity errors. For example: Vriska mind controlling two Cronuses when her powers were established as only being able to control lowbloods back in Hivebent. I say this as someone who generally likes Act Six, by the way. It's absolutely possible that Hussie, who was very burnt out at the time, forgot some of the minutia of his own lore. (3/3)
you don't deserve the time of day for me to respond to all of this because you're taking a stupid wiki argument to my blog when i told you quite plainly to discuss it on the wiki talk page... but i am gonna say if you're going to bring your annoying agenda all the way to tumblr you should at least have your facts straight: it is actually expressly "difficult to manipulate the mind of the psychically gifted" for Vriska, which excludes more lowbloods than it excludes highbloods; she outright cannot control Aradia, the lowest, and can only control Sollux "about half the time". it is true that Mindfang revels in being able to control the cohort of peasants watching over her execution, but only because they're "impressiona8le spect8ors" with "weak wills"; when Vriska is able to control Tavros, it's only because of his "simple, mallea8le 8rain", and Vriska's own description of her limits is that she "can't control just any8ody. They've got to 8e impressssssssiona8le" - like the consorts whose minds she read. while it is true that members of lower castes are more "psychically susceptible" to psychic attacks like gl'bgolyb's, this has never meant higher castes were totally immune: in fact the only reason Vriska doesn't fuck with Equius more is because he has her robot arm as leverage.
#and don't put words in my mouth abt this making hussie an infallible genius 😭#if you knew me at all you'd know im the no.1 proponent of Hussie Forgot#i just think maybe people should be more willing to admit They forgot something than using Hussie's fallibility as a catch all excuse#for the record the book commentary does in fact quote Hussie as saying Vriska's powers don't work on highbloods#so yes. he has absorbed some fanon misconceptions about this at some point#but the comic is very clear that vriska would be able to control a highblood if that highblood was weak willed enough#which i don't think anyone could ever argue doesn't describe cronus to a letter

sorry for going mad i just get really passionate about the nuanced depiction of parental characters in animated media
#i think theres things abt rise splinter that arent so great (mainly design stuff and his treatment as a man of colour) BUT.#the way his parenting and mental illness are written and depicted are NOT SOME OF THEM. theyre brilliant actually.#he's extremely well-written. and yes this is why i like camila toh so much as well (ive already made a whole post about her though)#i just. i dunno. i think its important to remember that love and trauma are extremely nuanced things with family.#there seems to be this fallacy about parenthood where youre either a ''good'' parent or abusive and well.#it can make it a lot harder for people to recognise their trauma if theyre caught up in the fact their parents love them or are ''good''#and it's a great disservice to struggling parents that might just need some support to call them ''bad''#people can love you and still hurt you and parents arent infallible. so i really appreciate nuanced takes on it#especially when directed at younger audiences

something about statistical literacy that i've never really seen talked about is that "there's no scientific evidence for this" as a statement on its own is completely useless
that can mean "this has been researched for decades and thoroughly debunked"
but it can also mean "this has never been studied at all"
and there's a very wide gulf between those statements and bad actors WILL try to trick you with it
#i'm not even really particularly great with statistics#i'm not infallible at all but i think it's important to always be aware and thinking about the fact that statistics can be used to lie#gay piracy

Ok. I am a writer, geologist, and a fan of Tolkien so let's do this.
In some fantasy settings, some things that do not make geological sense can be explained with magic. Ered Lithui and Ephel Duath, the mountain ranges that surround Mordor on three sides, came about as part of the aftermath of the War of Wrath. This War had several Maiar and Valar, including Morgoth (also known at Melkor) and Eonwe.
Both the Maiar and Valar are powerful beings. Valar, such as Morgoth, helped in the shaping of the world with Morgoth actually being the root cause of basically all the problems in Middle Earth because he's a rebellious little shit. The Maiar were created to help the Valar and, while not as powerful as the Valar, are very powerful in their own right. (For example, Gandalf, Sauron, and Sauromon are all Maiar)
Because the War of Wrath involved such powerful beings, it shaped the land around them dramatically. The Blue Mountains in the west were almost entirely sunken beneath the sea and Ered Lithui and Ephel Duath were raised. Mount Doom is also a result of Melkor's work as he created the volcano in the First Age. He did this a few times, forming 3 volcanos in the Iron Mountains as chimneys for his forges.
Does it make geological or geographical sense? No. But does it make canonical sense? Yeah kinda. I'm probably missing a few details, but sometimes, as much as we might like it to be otherwise. the answer simply is 'magic bullshit'.
Now, the Misty Mountains rain shadow.
I'll be honest when I say I don't know as much about rain shadows. But I can do math so let's see how this shakes out.
First, the Misty Mountains are about 1,280 km long. Taking this number and measuring how long and wide the Misty Mountains are on a map (which I got as 6.75 and .5 inches respectively) we can calculate for the approximate width of the Misty Mountains. Which comes out to about 95 km or 59 miles wide. Does this number help? I'm not really sure. But let's compare it to the Rockies.
The Rocky Mountains are about 3,000 miles (~4,8000 km) long. Along with other ranges like the Sierra Nevadas, they basically make the majority of the west coast of North America mountains. This is because of the Laramide orogeny causing uplift much farther inland than a normal orogenic event due to the subducting plate leveling out before subducting again further inland. The Rockies are a huge mountain range, being hundreds of miles wide in some places. They are much larger than the Misty Mountains and cast a much larger rain shadow.
The Appalachian Mountains are smaller and have a very small rain shadow. This is predominantly because they're ancient mountains and have been largely weathered away. The Misty Mountains are likely taller than the Appalachians. But these do have deciduous forests basically covering and surrounding them.
The last mountain range I'll draw for comparison is the Andes Mountains. The Andes range from 200 to 400 km wide. Their average height is around 4,000 meters, about twice the average height of the Rockies. And their rain shadow is much smaller than the Rockies. Forests butt right up to the Andes in some places. The Amazon is just east of part of the Andes.
All of these things taken into consideration, I don't think that Mirkwood being where it is is super unrealistic. Mirkwood doesn't but right up against the foot of the Misty Mountains. There isn't much description of the land between the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood in The Hobbit, but what description we are given is of rolling grasslands with some trees along the River Anduin which flows through it.
Now, I could be wrong about the rain shadow and Mirkwood as I am a geologist and this is not my area of expertise. But those are my thoughts. Hopefully, they make at least some sense.
reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
#lord of the rings#the hobbit#middle earth#geology#mountains#science#misty mountains#mirkwood#mordor#feel free to fact check my stuff#i am not infallible#but i do know my rocks
