not 100% sure how we got here, but was talking about trying to relay that quote in the post ("you will always need to leave and i will never let you go.") to aziraphale and crowley, and i was told to post my thoughts on it on here
to aziraphale, crowley is the one who seems to need to leave. he has been trying to escape, from heaven and from their responsibilities and from the plan. crowley, in aziraphale's mind, is trying to escape, but aziraphale is clinging to both him and heaven, not wanting to let him go
to crowley, aziraphale is the one trying to leave. he's trying to abandon crowley, leave and go to heaven where crowley cannot follow, and all crowley can do is beg for him to stay and hope he isn't abandoned once again
but in reality, neither of them can see the truth of the situation because both of them are too clouded by their perceptions
crowley is incapable of returning to heaven, just as aziraphale is incapable of leaving
the bird tries to fly away, desperately wanting the dog to fly with him but not understanding that the dog does not have the wings to follow. the dog does not understand that the bird is waiting for him to follow, and all he perceives is the bird flying away from him as he struggles to make him stay
they are both in each role, equally the same yet more different than they can comprehend

That feeling when, after 33 years of Heavily Implied Situationship, a canon romance is established and then imploded in 3 minutes flat as a plot device to set up the final act of a trilogy for which there is as of yet no confirmed third part.

That's what Satan has planned? A mighty wind from the wilderness to smite the mansion and bring it down upon them? ... Ooooooo, aren’t you brilliant.

Imagining Crowley and Aziraphale walking through a snowy soho
Aziraphale starts shivering so Crowley drapes his unusually warm suit jacket over his shoulders
Then Aziraphale just looks at him with that adoring look
And Crowley tries to play it off as if he didn’t just do the most romantic thing

-the south downs cottage-
crowley, sipping wine: hey, guess what?
aziraphale, reading: hmm?
crowley, smirking: maude is getting a divorce
aziraphale, puts the book down: really? oh, good. roger treated her awfully
crowley, nodding: I heard he was having an affair. with hilary!
aziraphale, gasps: no! *shakes his head* I knew there was a reason she wasn't attending the knitting circle
crowley, pouring more wine: so I told maude she can do so much better
aziraphale, smitten: of course you did
crowley, thoughtful: you know, that's the third marriage that's ended since we moved here *chuckles* maybe it's us
aziraphale, shrugs: perhaps they're looking at you and realising they'll never have perfection
crowley, impressed: smooth
aziraphale, reaches for his hand: you're not the only one capable of romance
crowley, kisses his hand: apparently not *pauses* it's hot
aziraphale, rolls his eyes playfully: I have one chapter left
crowley: *smug*

Okay goomen fandom I'll say something nice this time. I am a HUGE fan of when fan stuff makes Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship not necessarily always explicitly romantic (and/or sexual) historically, but makes them more playful about the idea. Like maybe they haven't "done anything" yet, but there's tension and they're aware of it and they play with it on purpose. I like the dynamic they have in the show very much and I find it compelling television, but it's also fun to have them be consciously attracted to each other and make them tease each other about it. More of a "if there's an iced tea in there it might be love" sort of dynamic (which I almost don't doubt would've been textual if they didn't present as the same gender). Repression is fun but the full breadth of a 6000-year weird gay sex game is also fun

He went upstairs for the first time in a week, and the moment he stepped into Crawley’s room, he saw a little strip of papyrus flutter to the ground.
“Eh?” Aziraphale quickly picked it up.
Written in a jagged scribe’s hand in black: FINAL NOTICE YOU HAVE 12 HOURS TO COMPLETE THE TASK OR FACE PUNISHMENT BEYOND MORTAL MEASURE-
“Wait, final?” And Aziraphale looked around. Slips of papyrus dotted the floor, and scrambling he picked up the pieces one by one. “These are orders...orders from Hell. Oh goodness gracious Crawley, wake up! Wake up!” He tossed the slips aside and grabbed Crawley by the shoulders, shaking him.
Crawley muttered something unpleasant, pushing Aziraphale aside and turning back over on the bed, drawing the covers over himself.
“You can’t! Crawley! You can’t sleep through this! You’ll...you’ll be destroyed!” Aziraphale gasped. “Come on, wake up.” He sat down on the upturned pot and he pressed his hand to the side of Crawley’s face, hoping the difference in temperature would shock the demon awake. “Please wake up.”
Crawley slumbered on.
“I...I can’t let you be destroyed, you stupid demon-”
Why’s that? And he could just about imagine Crawley asking the question, in a lazy drawl which sent a jolt of some panicky fear through him.
“B-because. Because, what if...what if they send someone terrible? Someone absolutely awful, who would be so much meaner than you and so much more difficult to work around. I just...I can’t let that happen. Yes, that must be why. After all, it’s not as though I actually know you. We’ve only met once. Twice? We’ve hardly ever talked! I don’t even know you!”
Aziraphale stood up, and picked up the slips again, quickly rearranging them in chronological order. “They...they erm want you to do a temptation. Tempt some villagers to steal grain from the local lord. They’re to gang up on him and beat him during the worst part of spring when there is no more food left. That...that can’t be hard. It wouldn’t take long, would it? And. And no one’s getting killed. So it’s not that bad and besides, they’re only taking back their own grain, right? Just this once. Just this once, I’ll do this for you. That way you won’t be destroyed, but you’ll owe me one, Crawley. Got that?” Aziraphale said, scolding the sleeping demon. “I’ll take care of this for you, just the once.”
At that moment, a slip of papyrus appeared in his own hand, one glistening from the light of Heaven and Aziraphale sighed.
“...all right, a miraculous healing. Well now, that’s convenient, it’s in the same neighborhood.”
Aziraphale paused at the doorway, looking back at Crawley.
“You owe me one, foul fiend.”

I think the reason we are all so deeply affected by Good Omens is because it inspires love. It inspires to long for love, to appreciate and worship love, to receive, but also give love, to a person, to the world, to yourself.
Love is EVERYWHERE in Good Omens. It has no borders and can’t be contained. The love for the world you live in, the stars and animals and humans walking on the earth. Love for humanity‘s creation, for books and magic and cars, for art and clever inventions, for ways to communicate and connect with others. Love for the people around you and maybe one special person you love more than anything else. A love that is not limited by gender or sex or age or size or appearance or belief or affiliation. A love that comes in different shapes and flavors. A love that just is. A love so powerful it can topple the system, save the world and even bring people back from the dead. So powerful it toppled people’s belief systems, saved and changed them fundamentally and brought them back to life.
It showed us a love we were told is an ideal we shouldn’t expect to ever achieve. But this story gives us hope. That one day we could find our Crowley or our Aziraphale. That no matter what hurdles are thrown in our way they can be overcome no matter how impossible it may seem. Even now after season 2 there‘s not a single person who doubts the two of them will have their happy end. Because this story taught us hope that there CAN be a happy end. Maybe even for us. We need to put in the work. And maybe need a bit of luck. But it‘s possible. Love is real. And it‘s fucking beautiful.
Thank you @neil-gaiman
