Eine Zeichnung vom Sonntag, diesmal die alten Speicher im Magdeburger Industriehafen. Das rostige Gebilde, das im Vordergrund den Blick auf das Gebäude versperrt, ist das vergammelte Heck des Kettenschleppdampfers "Gustav Zeuner", der rechts daneben an Land aufgebockt zur Besichtigung bereitsteht.

Das Runde ist in diesem Fall nicht im, sondern vor dem Eckigen, und ich bin im Nachhinein sehr glücklich mit meiner Entscheidung, das den Blick verstellende Objekt nicht einfach wegignoriert zu haben. Ohne wäre das Bild um einiges langweiliger geworden!

"TURNING BASIN AND CANAL COMPLETED," Toronto World. December 11, 1918. Page 5. --- Nothing official has been received from the department of public works at Ottawa regarding the continuation of the work on the Ashbridge Bay harbor by the Toronto office. The work on the ship canal and turning basin in the Toronto industrial harbor district was practically completed, yesterday. The diking improvements which have been under construction for the last four years are acknowledged by all prominent construction men to be one of the finest pieces of harbor work to be found in North America, in this district is situated the British Forgings and other plants of like calibre. It will undoubtedly develop into one of Toronto's foremost manufacturing districts.

At the end of the ship canal is a turning basin of modern type, 1100 feet square. Channel 900 feet long by 100 feet wide provides for the overflow of water from the basin. Between five and six hundred men have been employed on this work by the contractors, the Canadian Stewart Company. It is estimated that the cost will reach $3.000,000, but that the urgently needed improvements will undoubtedly prove their value to the shipping interests in the next few years. It is believed that the city and government co-operating, intend undertaking more extensive harbor improvements during the year 1919.

Nah but, I fell for a fictional town that gets almost no screen time at all. I just love that Doflamingo picked a literal garbage dump as his base of operations, sticking his Family into this fortress-looking waste processing plant, allegedly taking in like 100 hopeful but ultimately useless kids as mobster pirate apprentices and then losing all of them because his weirdo brother beat them and threw them in the trash until they ran off crying. What an era.

The landscape of scrap heaps, smoke stacks, industrial brick buildings and the name all speak to my imagination. It's like, Machinarium and Peaky Blinders meets Law's Little Nightmares-esque experience of being a tiny kid in a big hat amongst HUGE monster men. Just very into the Spider Miles vibes and the potential of that place aesthetically.

I also want to know if Doflamingo could use the constant chimney smoke and smog to create sky paths. Just create spiderwebs in the sky all over town and take a little walk.

mark had to be the one to refine cold harbor because the room was based on him. having gemma reenact something that he did. the data is his as much as it is meant to shape her because the data is feelings and those feelings are his. he’s designing a version of her by refining the feelings that he would have had, then. mark s. doesn’t know this, mark s. doesn’t have those memories but i think some innate part of him knows that they’re his. and maybe it’s a test on him as much as it is her, to see if it can illicit something from him, to celebrate when it does not. cold harbor was designed for gemma, but the blueprints it was built off of was mark

So like. The Gemma we see in the rooms is pretty docile, right? Like obviously not outside, og!Gemma, who hits someone with a chair, but the innie Gemmas seem pretty subdued. And I wonder. What did it take for them to get there? Because when Mark woke up he threatened to kill someone. Amd when Helly woke up she threw a speaker at Mark and tried and tried to get out by any means possible, even through suicide. And I wonder. I wonder if in each room Gemma fought and fought and fought. Because she's been in there for two years now. And somehow they broke her spirit in those rooms. Somehow they made chair-throwing Gemma into something docile and subdued. I'm not saying they are okay with it, clearly those Gemmas are all still angry and spiteful and afraid, but they don't act out anymore. What the fuck have they done to her

The insane hubris of Lumon though. Their last security chief mysteriously disappeared/was brutally murdered, and then there was a catastrophic failure that could have potentially destroyed the entire company. So they said, hmm, one guy couldn't handle it, let's replace him with one slightly bigger guy. That'll keep MDR in check.

if the files are the rooms on the testing floor

if it’s gemma and her severed versions that present as the data - if they are quite literally refining the severance procedure through refining all of these severed parts - if each file is different because room is different - because each gemma is different, dictated by what part of her is cut off, how a blank slate version of her reacts to each situation - (and if severed workers are the ones who carry out the work because they won’t ask questions, they don’t have the context of the real world to even realise this is bad - or, if they severed workers carry out the work because no non-severed person could fully comprehend the data that is the literal core of a bother severed person)

then maybe cold harbor is so special because it’s not happening in the usual order, it’s being refined first - based on all the data they’ve refined thus far, based on all the versions of gemma that have lived a painfully, never ending, terribly short life - they’ve designed the perfect room, the perfect test

if cold harbor succeeds then severance succeeds, because cold harbor is designed off the backs of all the other data
