I love how inclusivity is handled in The Dragon Prince, here's why.

In most shows, as much as it bothers me to admit so, some people are right, inclusivity does feel forced sometimes. But it's not the characters' fault, it's not because of them being part of the lgbtq+ community, or being disabled, or being POC, or being strong women who do not conform to patriarchal standards.

It's not that.

It's that the show they are part of is a straight, white, abled parade - and notice, most of said shows won't even pass the Bechdel test.

So yes, in a show written by and aimed to straight, white, abled people, even I, a gay, non-binary, chronically ill person feel weird seeing charcters that are there just for the sake of inclusivity, albeit 'inorganic'.

In a show with the premise of "straight, white, abled men are the indiscussed MCs", seeing that one side-character that stands out and is often ridiculed and/or reduced to a single trait of their 'personality', such as 'the gay one', 'the asian one', 'the disabled one' (etc) is upsetting and feels uncomfortable as hell.

But TDP is different.

They immediately introduced powerful women, people of color, characters that are openly part of the lgbtq+ community, disabled characters etc. And not one of them per 'category', no. For the lgbtq+ community we have Amaya, Janai, Runaan, Ethari, Terry, Kazi. For the disabled community, we have Amaya again, Villads, and even a disabled wolf Ava. For the POC community, we have literally half of the cast, starting from King Harrow, then Ezran, every sunfire elf, Terry as well, etc. Same goes for women, who take up on roles that are rarely considered 'for women', like Opeli being the main member of the High Council, Amaya being the General, Rayla being the main Dragon Guard, Claudia being one of the main antagonists, etc.

Both main and side-characters are part of the communities, everything is so much more organic, enjoyable, thrilling.

We do not come in 'minor quantity'.

We are everywhere, among others, living our lives, doing our best, existing, thriving, proud. It's not just one or two of us among thousands. Surprise, 'categories' can mix! Just like I, a real human being, can be gay, enby as well as chronically ill, we can have characters like that as well! Amaya being lesbian and disabled, Terry being black and trans, Janai being black and lesbian, etc. And, another surprise, 'categories' don't define us. We don't 'shove it' in anyone's face like they say we do, we're just being us and cishets are upset because we don't conform to their sick standards.

Inclusivity is organic in TDP because nobody in that universe questions anyone else's color, gender, orientation, etc. And it's organic because we didn't have to wait half a season to see a black character, or a disabled character, or a gay character.

The key to inclusivity is to realise that we aren't just 'bonuses'. Fill shows and comics with lgbtq+, POC, disabled, and female characters. Not just one every 15, 20 characters. Everywhere.

We are everywhere! We are proud! We deserve to be seen! We deserve to be depicted as the normal people we are, without diminishing our traits but without making them our whole personality either. Treat us like human beings, be considerate like you should be with everyone on the planet of course, but treat us like humans.

Antagonising people who are 'different' (in the mind of straight, white, abled people) will not suppress us. We will keep insisting until you hear us. It's literally one of the main messages, one of the main teachings of TDP and it's so damn important.

Every single person on Earth should watch it. Every single kid should be introduced to TDP at an early age. Every old bigot should watch it, as well. Everybody. Even if it's considered a y7 (y10 for s4 and s5 apparently) show, everyone, no matter their age, should give it a try and watch it thoroughly.

Lots of love to the creators and everyone, literelly everyone involved in the production of one the best, most entertaining, most exciting, most formative shows ever. Please, keep it up! And thank you so much!

Nosferatu yap by Mee

This wants to be half a yap and half a personal analysis about Eggers' movie. Basically, I just want to write about things that surprised me or interested me in the movie (and script), because I really liked it.

Intro

So first things first, me and my friend like to hang out. We like to go to the cinema, grab the most isolated seats and comment on every single scene for the fun of it; things often get chaotic. This time, the random movie we picked was Nosferatu.

As I always do, I never watch trailers of the movies we go see. Either I already know what I'm about to watch or I just like to form an opinion for myself without being influenced by the internet. The literal only thing I knew was it was a horror movie and my friend added there was romance too. I honestly don't enjoy either of these genres, so I just expected to chitchat with my friend the entire time.

ooo was I wrong!

The first part of the movie was kinda slow but I appreciated that in some way. I really enjoyed how elusive the Count is made to be when Thomas first encounters him. Him appearing and disappearing, and the scenes being somewhat chaotic and confused really make you feel like you're also being toyed by Orlok's vampiric powers.

On the other hand I couldn't wait for things to evolve and see some more danger. And I got what I asked for, cause without even realizing it, I watched with an open mouth all the second part.

Since I really like people, I'll start talking about Nosferatu's characters.

The Characters/Actors

Ellen

I am in love with her. I've never seen this actress before but, goddamn, me and my friend were HOOKED by her performance. She made Ellen even more interesting in my eyes. Especially in the second part of the movie when she goes full bonkers, she's desperate and very much possessed.

I really like how her character is written; she seems like your typical (sigh) background weepy woman at first, but then you can really see how she's the indiscussed protagonist of the story. She knows exactly what to do and when to do it, while the rest of the cast still has to learn the ABC before trying to act against Orlok and fail. The real enemy of the story is the lack of trust in her words anyone has. I think the professor is the key point for her to also start believing in her abilities and take her final choice. *loud handclapping noise*

Friedrich

Friedrich! MY BOY! As soon as he was introduced, I screamed!!!!! I already knew the actor from Bullet Train, so it was such a pleasant surprise to see him. I was also very pleased he had a mustache again, cause yeah, I'm a big mustache enjoyer (for people who know my Mumbo Jumbo design, it is heavily based on Tangerine oops).

I heard online that some people think the actor made Friedrich character annoying, but??? The guy just really doesn't wanna know anything about occult and wanna stay out of all the shit. Is that an 'annoying' trait or a cowardly one? I was honestly laughing a bit about his 'fuck this shit I'm out' behaviour throughout the movie cause he just proceeded to be in even more shit every time. He also has the saddest, most pathetic ending ever. Rest In Piss.

Von Franz

As I briefly said before, I think he's the very key to Ellen discovering how to trust herself. Finally, someone came by and gave her the answers she had been searching for all this time, never once telling her what she should or shouldn't do. Von Franz knows how she has to handle things but lets her explore and choose on her own.

Moreover, he really has that 'excited Heimerdinger' vibe about him that I quite enjoy. I especially saw it in this scene where he closely examines the rat bites on the corpse. This guy passionately studied the occult for years and now that he finds someone like Ellen, he's thrilled about it. Despite his funky enthusiasm, he's the one taking the situation most seriously (a classic move I always like).

He also has a mustache. +100 points.

Count Orlok

You know who else has a mustache? Hell yeah, our 'little' critter Orlok!

As I was watching the movie, I just casually enjoyed his mustache. After, I discovered Eggers rightfully based his character on real Transylvanian noblemen and I loved it even more. I am completely on board with the once-handsome, barely-walking, rotting corpse of a vampire. YES. And even though he's horrid and putrid, he doesn't fail to somehow fascinate Ellen (and me by the way). I believe the way Orlok is written and interpreted is really on point. Eggers' Orlok really rolls a nat20 on charisma.

Prior to this, I only knew Orlok from the 1922 Nosferatu and the guy looked rather silly and goofy, not at all ideal for Eggers version of the story. May my cinema professor excuse me for not doing my homework then (watching and analizing 1922 Nosferatu); I'll make sure to do it shortly. Better late than ever, right?

Other characters

The others didn't really impress me if not for the costumes. I don't think they're bad characters or anything; I know what purpose they all serve, but they just didn't obsess my mind as much.

Like paintings

Leaving behind the carefully knitted story, the movie itself is visually a work of art, no matter the crudeness of the scene.

The use of black and white for when there's Orlok's influence is a smart move and it also brings you back to that 'old movie' vibe. In the first part of the movie, especially, even Ellen's movents feel classic.

This very last literal painting that closes the movie reminded me of Hannibal crime scenes, and above that, I really think I've never seen a better ending than this. Really breathtaking.

I know it has been discussed into the Marianna trench but let me just hop in mine yellow submarine to clarify this topic:

Nerissa/Chelsea would have been a villain in every version story but the one we ended up with is not a very good villain , she is a entertaining character but that’s not being a good villain and she couldn’t be one because she had no time to be a villain

even if it was obvious , and actually told by the trailers , she started doing cartoon villains things right at the very end and even of you want to make the argument that the point was to make the sting of betrayal harder , that also doesn’t work because Ruby gets over it pretty quickly and all the other things that makes her evil are TOLD , not shown

wanna know why almost all of the fanart of this movie is still about the couple of Ruby and Chelsea even after the events in the movie ?

it’s not the deleted scenes or that it was a thing before the movie came out , it’s because the majority of the movie is about Ruby and Chelsea being best friends

but HOW they are friends changed from version to version

in the deleted scenes Chelsea is shown to be more of a bad influence despite being friendly , running around , making a mess , almost killing someone , teenagers stuff , and is a better rappresentation of someone that thinks they own the world which would fit her character but it made me remember something

Back when the movie first came out , I had a similar complaint in a comment section on Tumblr and someone pointed out how Nerissa lacks the trait most prominent in a toxic friend , that they care more about what THEY want than what OTHERS want ,

and it just doesn’t come across , first of all , Nerissa isn’t the one to separate Ruby from her friends and love interest , Ruby is the one more focused on the getting the trident as a sign of peace than hanging out with someone that isn’t Chelsea , maybe if she was coerced or gaslighted into acting this way it would been better but I’m not sure how to explain this other than she simply didn’t find them as important

and the worst part of it all , is now that Nerissa is the antagonist of three generations

the movie bends over backwards to make her the sole source of conflict

I don’t think this scene gets discussed enough , it’s implied that the reason Agatha left may not be the mermaids fault but her own mother and the way she acts and thinks

but there’s no time for that because Nerissa is on the loose again , but once she is defeated once and all and not all everything that they were upset by were her fault how would they process those same feelings if they are just left indiscussed ?

he had his whore moment (he's like a proud mom bragging ab her kids) (ranpo deserves a lot of proud parents cause he's so so so!!!!)

ranpo being the indiscussed best character? yes ofc, and I'm happy he finally had the screen time he deserves. he was so pretty, and glorious, and perfect, and smart and just so ranpo for all the time

this scene's just father-son reunion moment and poe smiling in the back and being his hottest self (seriously, he's so pretty even tho he's way prettier in his usual clothes) (fukuzawa slayed like always)

and the final conference scene? I almost cried, cause for all his childish behaviour ranpo has a big ton of experience & contacts and everyone in the government field knows him. the same agents who tried to catch him had worked at least one time with him, they had been helped by him and saved by him- and a little trust was there. ranpo's so smart and kind and mature it hurts now stop I need to see him being happy with his dad (I fear the moment fukuchi will have the tiniest bit of screen time)

Quello delle sorelle Brontë è un caso forse unico nel panorama letterario mondiale. Charlotte, Emily e Anne, tre donne unite da un fortissimo legame di sangue, tutte e tre poetesse e scrittrici, vissute in simbiosi e morte giovanissime, autrici di alcuni tra i più famosi classici della letteratura ottocentesca, sono le protagoniste indiscusse di “Tutto questo fuoco”.

Si tratta di un romanzo in cui Angeles Caso, con amore, ammirazione ed estremo rispetto, racconta la vita familiare delle tre sorelle, ponendo l’accento sul fuoco divorante della creazione letteraria che le ha portate alla fama imperitura.

L’autrice inizia dalla loro infanzia sfortunata: rimaste orfane di madre in giovanissima età, sono state allevate dalla severa quanto amorevole zia Elizabeth e dal padre, il reverendo Patrick Brontë.  

Charlotte, la più ambiziosa e determinata, è quella che insegue la fama: vuole che il talento suo e delle sorelle sia noto a tutti.

Emily, la grande poetessa, è timida e riservata al punto da rasentare la maleducazione, ma ha uno spirito indomito e appassionato, e una pienezza emotiva che la spingono a comporre versi di una bellezza incommensurabile. Niente al mondo potrebbe portarla lontano da Haworth e dalla sua amata brughiera. Inoltre, non condivide assolutamente il desiderio di Charlotte di pubblicare i loro scritti.

Anne, la più giovane, dolce e remissiva, desidera soltanto restare a casa con le sorelle piuttosto che lavorare come istitutrice e farsi maltrattare da ragazzini ricchi, ignoranti e viziati.

La Caso racconta gli amori impossibili o sfortunati delle tre giovani donne, il rapporto difficilissimo con il fratello Branwell, ma, soprattutto, permette al lettore di entrare nella canonica di Haworth quando Charlotte, Emily ed Anne, dopo aver terminato tutte le faccende domestiche, possono finalmente riunirsi in salotto, tirare fuori i loro scrittoi, affilare le penne e comporre i loro capolavori.

COSA MI È PIACIUTO

Sono una grande appassionata dei romanzi delle sorelle Brontë e mi sono sempre chiesta come tre giovani donne, cresciute in una canonica in mezzo alla brughiera, in piena età vittoriana, potessero creare dei personaggi complessi e indimenticabili come Jane Eyre, Edward Rochester, Cathy e Heathcliff: finalmente ho trovato la risposta.

COSA NON MI È PIACIUTO

Come sempre quando un libro mi piace enormemente, mi trovo in difficoltà a evidenziarne gli aspetti negativi. Sinceramente, in questo caso, non ne ho trovato nessuno.

L’AUTRICE

Angeles Caso nasce a Gijón nel 1959, figlia di un filologo che dava la buonanotte ai figli con le ballate del Cinquecento. Dopo aver studiato arte e storia moderna, per due anni è il volto di un telegiornale spagnolo, ma non si sente a casa. Torna a dedicarsi alla letteratura a tempo pieno. Alterna il romanzo storico alla fiction, e al centro della sua attenzione c’è sempre il coraggio delle donne. “Controvento”, che racconta la vera storia della sua baby-sitter di Capo Verde, le è valso il premio Planeta. “Tutto questo fuoco” è un omaggio amorevole alla passione inarrestabile delle sorelle Brontë.

LA CASA EDITRICE

Marcos y Marcos più che una casa editrice, in principio era una mansarda a Milano dove Marco Franza e Marco Zapparoli, poco più che ventenni, inventavano, assemblavano e spedivano nel mondo edizioni numerate dai caratteri splendidi e la carta fabbricata a mano. Spesso quei fascicoli esili erano accompagnati da stampe d’artista o riproduzioni di manoscritti originali. Gli autori? Da Mario Luzi a Novalis, da Leonardo da Vinci a Heinrich von Kleist. Il mestiere si imparava strada facendo. Ai tempi, si vendevano meno libri di oggi e la concorrenza era esigua. C’era più tempo per sperimentare e anche per sbagliare. I librini di trenta pagine in un decennio si sono trasformati in una collana “di culto”. Sempre con un occhio ai classici, certo, magari non più così indietro nel tempo.

Hello lavender!

In a sea of lavender, I would like to take strokes of wonder.

Lavender is currently one of the undisputed stars here in Stella di Lemmen. It is in full bloom and offers its best in every sense of the word - beautiful, colorful, fragrant. It appears to us everywhere gently and discreetly, dressed in its various hues and shades: from white to pink, from lilac to purple to deep blue.

Pollinating insects adore it: bees in the lead, visiting it already early in the morning, but also bumblebees, staying until late in the evening! Those who approach a bush are immersed in a vibrant, unison buzzing...which is not at all dangerous. The insects are busy exclusively foraging and, if disturbed, simply change flower.

Lavender is a Mediterranean scrub bush that usually remains around a meter in diameter or so. On bare mountain slopes it reaches up to 1,400 meters above sea level, with smaller specimens that develop even more vivid colors.

It has about 30 species, some of them native to Italy such as Spica, Vera, Latifolia, Dentata and Stoechas. The latter, an elegant variety with showy insect wing-like bracts at the head of the flower, is the most fragrant and re-blooming of all.

All these species and many others are present on our farm, scattered everywhere and actively participating in the biodiversity and beauty of the entire agricultural organism; they are a even more exceptional presence as the plants are at ease in poor and stony soils and, once started, do not need a single drop of water except that which is bestowed by the sky!

Wherever they are found, with their hues and intense fragrance they bring joy, awe and serenity...until harvest time comes, usually in late July. We are almost there! The most suitable varieties will be stripped of their spiky inflorescences, which we will distill to extract the precious essence.

Already the ancient Egyptians employed lavender essential oil because of its antiseptic properties, while the Romans added it to bath water to perfume, but also to purify themselves and "wash" themselves of diseases - hence its name.

At Stella di Lemmen it will accompany us and comfort us throughout the winter: as a room fragrance, for a temple massage in case of headaches, in herbal teas and in the preparation of delicious Christmas cookies. It will also serve to ward off insects and protect our clothing in the closets as well as, at all times, bestow its unmistakable aroma upon us.

By transforming the light, lavender elaborates its healing, calming and relaxing power, which brings benefits in anxious states or nervous disorders, soothes the soul and conciliates sleep. Even its color says so: a true gift from heaven!

La lavanda al momento è una delle indiscusse protagoniste qui a Stella di Lemmen. È nel pieno della fioritura ed offre il meglio di sé in tutti sensi - bella, colorata, profumata. Ci appare in ogni dove con gentilezza e discrezione, vestita delle sue diverse tinte e sfumature: dal bianco al rosa, dal lilla al viola fino al blu intenso.

Piace, - ah come piace! - agli insetti impollinatori: le api in testa, che la visitano già di prima mattina, ma anche i bombi, che rimangono fino a tarda sera! Chi si avvicina ad un cespuglio si immerge in un vibrante, unisono ronzio…per nulla pericoloso. Gli insetti sono occupati esclusivamente a bottinare e, se vengono disturbati, si limitano a cambiare fiore.

La lavanda è un cespuglio della macchia mediterranea che solitamente rimane intorno al metro di diametro o poco più. Sugli scarni declivi montani si spinge fino ai 1.400 metri di altitudine, con esemplari più piccoli che sviluppano colori ancora più vivaci.

Conta una trentina circa di specie, alcune delle quali originarie dell'Italia come la Spica, la Vera, la Latifolia, la Dentata e la Stoechas. Quest'ultima, elegante varietà dalle vistose brattee simili ad ali di insetto in capo al fiore, è la più profumata e rifiorente in assoluto.

Tutte queste specie e molte altre sono presenti nella nostra azienda, sparse in ogni dove e attivamente partecipi alla biodiversità e alla bellezza dell'intero organismo agricolo; ancor più eccezionale presenza in quanto le piante sono a loro agio anche in terreni poveri e sassosi e, una volta avviate, non necessitano di una sola goccia d'acqua se non quella elargita dal cielo!

Ovunque si trovino, con le loro tinte ed il loro profumo intenso apportano gioia, stupore e serenità...fin quando giunge l'epoca della raccolta, solitamente a fine luglio. Ci siamo quasi! Le varietà più adatte verranno private delle loro infiorescenze a spiga, che distilleremo per ricavarne la preziosa essenza.

Già gli antichi Egizi impiegavano l'olio essenziale di lavanda per via delle sue proprietà antisettiche, mentre i Romani lo aggiungevano all'acqua del bagno per profumarsi, ma anche per purificarsi e "lavarsi" dalle malattie - da qui il suo nome.

A Stella di Lemmen ci accompagnerà e conforterà durante tutto l'inverno: come aroma d'ambiente, per un massaggio alle tempie in caso di mal di testa, nelle tisane e nella preparazione di deliziosi biscotti natalizi. Servirà inoltre ad allontanare gli insetti e a proteggere i nostri indumenti negli armadi oltre che, in ogni momento, ad elargire il suo inconfondibile aroma.

Trasformando la luce, la lavanda elabora il suo potere curativo, calmante e rilassante, che arreca benefici negli stati ansiosi o nei disturbi nervosi, rasserena l’animo e concilia il sonno. Lo dice anche il suo colore: un vero dono del cielo!

Camille Pissarro, nei suoi dipinti, incarna quell' esplorazione di bellezza di quotidiani paesaggi sereni, di scene rurali interpreti di semplicità.

L" artista, però, di indole versatile e proteso alla sperimentazione, assorbe il fascino dei cambiamenti urbani della Parigi dell' epoca.

La modernizzazione, la trasformazione radicale fautorata dal Barone Haussmann con i nuovi edifici, gli ampi boulevard e spazi pubblici, attraggono notevolmente Pissarro, e allora dinamismo, vita urbana, movimento della gente e il transitare delle carrozze immerse in luci, atmosfere e ancora, nebbia e pioggia divengono focus ispiratorio, nasce così Boulevard Montmartre.

L' opera è magia di un ambiente nel ritmo di un respiro prepotente, dal fascino di una complessità visiva in un unicum che travalica la sola realtà empirica del luogo.

Pissarro non abbraccia totalmente la dissoluzione delle figure, le stesse, bollicine effervescenti protagoniste indiscusse di una realtà magmatica di vita.
