indigo milk cap (lactarius indigo)
note!! please do not pick and eat mushrooms by yourself! it is very easy to pick up the wrong mushroom and I could be poisonous!
the indigo milk cap is a bright blue colored mushroom that grows throughout north america, east asia, france, and central america.
this mushroom is edible. it has a bitter almost peppery taste to it, and the flesh of this mushroom is also very firm.
common places for this mushroom can be found are: gulf of mexico's coast, mexico, guatemala, along the appalachian mountain range, arizona, california, virginia, (one county in) texas, china, india, costa rica, and south france.
the indigo milk cap has a depressed cap, pretty tightly pack gills, and a square shaped stem. the flesh is also blue and once exposed to air for awhile will turn a greenish color. and the milk of the indigo milk cap tried a greenish color.
in early stages of life the indigo milk cap is wet and slimy but grow dry and brittle once the mushroom is established and older.

Indigo Milk Cap Mushroom
Lactarius indigo
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These otherworldly deep indigo blue milkcaps contain a derivative of azulene. This pigment is also found in some species of soft corals throughout the oceans.

Edible (at your own risk). They have a mild taste to me and I prefer them sauteed.

Lactarius indigo?
FOTD #036 : indigo milky! (lactarius indigo)
the indigo milky (also called blue lactarius, indigo milk cap or blue milk mushroom) is a mycorrhizal mushroom in the family russulaceae. this mushroom is found across the US, mexico, china, india, costa rica & guatemala. it is famous for its blue, milk-like latex that seeps out when the gills are sliced !!
the big question : can i bite it?? yeah<3 this fungus is edible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
l. indigo description :
"the cap of the fruit body, measuring between 5–15 cm (2.0–5.9 in) in diameter, is initially convex & later develops a central depression; in age it becomes even more deeply depressed, becoming somewhat funnel-shaped as the edge of the cap lifts upward. the cap surface is indigo blue when fresh, but fades to a paler grayish- or silvery-blue, sometimes with greenish splotches. it is often zonate: marked with concentric lines that form alternating pale & darker zones, & the cap may have dark blue spots, especially towards the edge. young caps are sticky to the touch. the flesh is pallid to bluish in color, slowly turning greenish after being exposed to air; its taste is mild to slightly acrid. the flesh of the entire mushroom is brittle. the latex exuded from injured tissue is indigo blue, & stains the wounded tissue greenish."

I just saw your reply on a post abt mushrooms and could I ask for some of your favorite mushrooms and some info on them if you so please?
yeah I love talking about mushrooms! I honestly have too many favorites and I could rant forever but here’s a few very cool ones (note it is 2am and I will probably spell some things wrong cause tired):
Tumblr media
Hydnellum peckii aka the bleeding tooth fungus, like, she is the moment, beautiful horror movie of a mushroom, we love her, and the droplets have anticoagulant (blood thinning) properties which is v cool, vampire ass mushroom
Tumblr media
Jack o lantern mushrooms like Omphalotus olearius are gorgeous orange shrooms that glow in the dark, very Halloween themed, and their bioluminescence comes from the enzyme luciferase which is the same enzyme that fireflies utilize for their glow
Tumblr media
Indigo milk caps are gorgeous like, look at that color, and the “milk” (aka latex) they ooze is a gorgeous indigo blue color. They’re also edible!
Tumblr media
Cyathus aka birds nest fungi are these really neat tiny little shrooms that have “eggs” that are reproductive structures containing spores. This is my picture of cyathus striatus, they’re about the size of your fingernail and I just think they’re neat!
Tumblr media
Clathrus mushrooms are very cool, they smell bad which is why they’re called stinkhorns, here is my photo of the different life stages of a Clathrus columnatus. I just think they look like funky little aliens, and their gross smell attracts insects which help disperse their spores
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shaggy ink caps are just gorgeous goth babes, and when they mature they melt into black goo which disperses their spores
Tumblr media
This last one isn’t a mushroom, it’s a slime mold, which people often confuse for mushrooms but they’re their own thing. We do however study slime molds in mycology, they get grouped together with fungi. This one is a pic I took of stemonitis splendens aka the chocolate tube slime, I just think she’s gorgeous and wanted to share! A lot of times people will find goo in their backyard and assume it’s a fungus but generally it’s actually a slime mold

What’s your favorite fungi?
Oooooh so glad you asked! Here are some of my favorite children, cause it's too hard to pick just one:
Tumblr media
Devil's tooth, or strawberries and cream, look like this when they're young
Tumblr media
Then there's purple jellydisc, which looks like a bizarre internal organ. The jelly parts are made up of decayed plant matter being digested!
Tumblr media
And indigo milk cap, which has a beautiful color and oozes indigo latex when cut 💜
Tumblr media
can't forget bridal veil, which looks lacey and dainty but emits the stench of rotting meat to attract carrion flies!
Tumblr media
And wood ear gets a special mention for being, in my opinion, the tastiest fungus

lately i’ve been feeling like a very under appreciated fungi wizard like today i went “i am thinking about indigo milk caps. i think it is the right time of year so i will see if i can stumble upon one today”, looked at a park map, thought really hard about what would be growing in the ecosystems on each trail at this time of year, then just. found em on a trail i decided would be most likely. and no one seems to care about my Power

Favourite mushroom? Mine is the chicken of the woods. It looks so cool
so im not a fan of eating mushrooms but if we're talking the Aesthetic Value Of Mushrooms then it's probably either the inky cap or indigo milk cap, both are very very cool!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(fun fact about inky caps, there are actually a bunch of different types of mushrooms/fungi that can be classified as inky caps, all of which (iirc) developed similar appearances and spore spreading methods due to convergent evolution!!!)

Autumn has fallen! What are some edible mushrooms I might find around local forests? (Obviously local differs widely, but maybe there are a few that are common in many places?)
autumn has indeed fallen.. haha.. *sweats in southern hemisphere*
here is a nice list of edible mushrooms common across the world (especially the northern hemisphere as i assume you're from up there), & that especially fruit during autumn-winter months :
chicken of the woods (laetiporus sulphureus)
chanterelles
horse mushroom (agaricus arvensis)
field mushroom (agaricus campestris)
giant & common puffballs - only safe to eat when young & white all the way through, plus they're quite over-harvested
shaggy ink caps (coprinus comatus) - but remember to eat before they mature !!
morels (a little harder to find, but a great find if you can)
saffron & indigo milk caps
lion's mane (hericium erinaceus)
..& many more !! please remember to be extremely careful when foraging alone, & i don't advise eating random fungi if you're not well-educated on mushroom identification. ^^"

And they where shroom mates...!
Tumblr media
I don't like to take requests from others, however, someone suggested the indigo milk cap and the ink cap mushroom as girlfriends and they are my top two favorite mushrooms so I was willing to make an exception
