first of all, thank you! it's the 'I have been studying societies and law for long enough that it seeps into my every thought, including the institutions of star wars'

darth vader is a tragic pathetic little guy, to me

darth vader is not a monster - he is human, and he does monstrous things, but he's not simply ~evil~. people overestimate the amount of power he has in the empire (leia literally says in the OPENING SCENES OF ANH that vader is on tarkin's leash), and try to inaccurately pin all the empire's evilness onto him and him alone, like palpatine is right there.

he is a walking corpse. hurt people hurt people. he inflicts terrors on trillions of sentients; has committed more mass atrocities and crimes against humanity that can possibly be created, yet he is an inherently tragic figure trapped, abused and enslaved by palpatine

vader is evil not because he enjoys it, but because he is depressed and apathetic, truly reflective of the banality of evil (hannah arendt. he is trapped in his suit; he feels like he has no one left but palpatine, no reason to leave (which luke does change, but by the point he learns about luke... it has been so long). he is so, so alone.

darth vader is an iconic villain. his character is fascinating. he is pathetic. he is mainly bad, but a little bit good, he ironically becomes perfectly apathetic and detached like the jedi always wanted him to be the second he becomes a full-fledged sith.

he is a walking cautionary tale that ignoring trauma and not addressing systemic oppression and violence will only beget more violence; he is a symptom of the republic becoming corrupted into an empire through ignoring slavery, being apathetic and fighting pointless wars as well as the jedi's neglect and stagnation (letting children to meet with politicians without supervision is a breach of duty of care)

and do not be fooled, he is anakin skywalker: twisted, corrupted, yet still the chosen one who ends the sith, the worst timeline for anakin skywalker; he is not anakin skywalker's inevitable future, but he is not a surprising result

Whats the difference between lichen, moss, mould and mushrooms if they're all fungus? Aren't they all the same sorta thing?

so, interestingly, all of these groups are very different !! instead of naming the differences, let me quickly explain what exactly these organisms are.

lichen :

lichens are symbiotic organisms, meaning they are in themselves the product of a relationship between different organisms. to simplify it, lichens are big part fungus, & smaller part algae (protista) or cyanobacteria (monera). these different forms of life together create lichen, which grows on trees, rocks, leaves, mosses & sometimes other lichens !! to read more about lichens, check out @/lichenaday's blog :-)

moss :

mosses are actually not fungi at all !! they are small, flowerless plants. they grow on trees & in soil. :-)

mould :

mould is a type of structure that fungi can form - it is entirely fungal. it reproduces through airborne spores :-) there are many different types of mould ; some are toxic, some are used medicinally, & some are saprotrophs. (note : slime moulds & water moulds are unrelated to fungal moulds !!)

mushrooms :

so, lots of people think mushrooms are a species of fungus, but they are not. "mushroom" refers to the fruiting body of a fungus ; what a mushroom is to a fungus is comparable to what a flower is to a tree - the part that reproduces !! not all fungi produce mushrooms (e.g. moulds, which do not have fruiting bodies as the entire organism is able to release spores). there are currently only 14 000 discovered fungi that produce mushrooms !! more fungi that don't produce mushrooms include mildew, yeast & lichen.

so, yes !! they're all quite different in structure, cells & function in the ecosystem.

As someone who is in a love/hate relationship with BG3 at the moment, it was truly disheartening to see the absolute GAP of content between Wyll and the vampire. Like, Wyll has a really killer introduction to the story, but the fact he doesn’t react when you do his companion quest IRKS me like… stand up for yourself brother, please 🧍‍♀️

From February 2015 to October 2019. Never made it high on the ranks. Or high at all

I joined basically to pay for college, I wasn't at a good moment with my parents at the time and also it was a dire situation, economically wise.

I don't regret it personally, but I wouldn't do it again. Let it be said that it changes your perspective in a lot of things about your country.

Just curious, as I know Canada has lots of lakes: Have you ever swum in one, & if so, what's it like?

I've only ever swum in the sea, and the English Channel has a very high salinity which makes one nice and buoyant, so it's interesting to think of the differences between the sea and a lake.

See the idea that someone hasn't swum in a lake at some point is just incredibly strange to me. Uh, yes, many? Both the normal kind and the 'basically an inland sea' kind.

The lack of tide or (much) current is the much more noticeable difference in smaller ones, honestly. Though the water being less buyout (and the ground beneath it usually being rather slimier) is a real thing too.

Tell me a shroom fact please

a recently-found amber fossil (dating to ~100 million years ago) suggests that dinosaurs ingested psychotropic fungi !!

in this fossil, we see some of the earliest recorded evidence of grass. atop the grass? a fungal parasite. in comparison with our fungi today, this fungus is most similar to ergot - fungi that grow on rye & produce alkaloids. ergot has been used as a medicine, a poison & a hallucinogen by humans for thousand of years.

the small chance that dinosaurs tripped on psychedelics keeps me going, tbh.

Hol up you drew the gold scars yourself? I thought Aylin just had them in game on her model?

I did! And she does, to an extent - the ones on her head I didn't have anything to do with. Unfortunately, on the in-game body model Aylin uses, the scars just end around the neckline of her shirt and kind of fade out partway down her back.

So I decided to learn a bit of Substance Painter and texturing, and went to town, using the above as a starting point. Getting it to export right and show up in the game properly was the main challenge! I wrote a post about some of the process here.

Of course, me being me, the most fun part of the thing was overthinking and deep(ish?) lore cuts. I'd like to share some of the concept art that inspired this and that I referenced in that post. This is from the artbook:

As you might have noticed in these, there used to be a whole thing about "the Nightsong's heart" (eerily enough, the item's still kind of in the game) which in the final story ended up "just" being Aylin getting repeatedly stabbed and ritualistically murdered. Along with dialogue about the magical "spear intended for [her] heart" and such. So I decided I wanted to have the big golden patch on her chest as a reference to all this.

Meanwhile on her back we have the aftermath of Balthazar's handiwork. This is one of those notes that, on your first playthrough, you probably read before having any idea about the Nightsong twist and you file it under the giant "Atrocities, Various" pile that is Balthazar. And then some time later it hits you and you think it's really convenient how you have a save file you can load just to go kill him again.

From Timeranger to Gokaiger there were 5 shows that used flip phones as henshin devices. But from Go-Buster to Kiramager, only Zyuogher used a phone/rubic cube and Kiramager used a smart watch. Why didn't Sentai used smartphones as henshin devices? Is it because smartphones look boring lack the inherent coolness and playability of flip phones? Or is it because Kyoryuger made Bandai thought weapons should be henshin devices instead?

I think it's because regular smartphones don't have a dynamic action like flip phone do/did. There is something really cool about being able to flip open your device and punch in a code. I mean, that was what a younger me thought was absolutely cool as heck about Kamen Rider 555's henshin sequence. There is one Sentai-adjacent series that HAS used smartphones though. The High School Heroes had a phone app that allowed the heroes and the villains to transform.

And I will always take the opportunity to advocate for the High School Heroes.

Gala Night (Open RP Starter)

The venue is already lively; cars being parked via valet and the green flashes of Rick-and-families arriving via portal. Ricky has booked a sprawling manor and grounds for her big day. The entire event is being managed by a staff of bipedal aliens wearing black ties, red cummerbunds, and name tags. They are carrying hors d'oeuvres, escorting guests here or there, running the games and entertainment. Several greet guests at the entrance to hand them a pamphlet of the events taking place to night as well as the amenities and a map of the grounds.

Reading the pamphlet, it's clear how over the top Ricky was willing to go; this place had a ballroom, dinning room, casino, two live bands, three swimming pools (bathing attire provided), two saunas, four gardens and a main patio (view of firework display best from main patio). Every room was hosting a different event ranging from a contortionist performance to exotic drug sampling (age restrictions on certain events clearly labeled), and there was a bar in just about every available space.

Walking through the main entrance, there is all sorts of guests here; lots of different Ricks of course, and a spattering of Bird Persons and Squanchys, but also lots of less recognizable faces including tough-looking aliens seeming slightly awkward in their evening finery. There were groups here with clear leaders, one individual being surrounded by a small band of lackeys attending and guarding. Though, all these leaders stop to pay respects to the woman of the hour.

Ricky is in the main hall for the time being, greeting as many guests she can as they arrive; hugs, air kisses at cheeks, or people kissing the back or her hand. As you approach the front of the que, Ricky gives you a huge smile. "Glad you could make it! Hope you found the place okay."
