i know that trying to definitively categorize media is a fool's errand, and also that "urban fantasy" is the accepted term for "it's the modern world except there's vampires or elves or some shit", but personally, I hardly even consider Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy to be fantasy. I consider it science-fiction, and that's how I approach it when writing the more fantastical elements. I don't exactly have anywhere I'm going with this but I think that some people that have really delved into the monster lore might get what I'm talking about. It's extrapolatory. It's about "what if X happened - well then Y might happen as a result, and what are the implications of Y."

That's also why some of the rules text very vaguely alludes to some scientific explanations for vampires without saying anything like "uh, for vampires to be scientific and realistic it has to be a virus spread by bite that transforms people into immortal blood-drinking mutants who die if they see a right angle, something viruses are scientifically and realistically known to be able to do, and medieval peasants were just too stupid to understand that so they thought that crosses repelled vampires because of God."

Vampires in Eureka are still the vampires from Eureopean folklore, but the scientific implications of them existing like that are extrapolated on and explored. That's where the cosmic horror comes in.

What Waits Beyond

Have you ever tried to participate in a ttrpg adventure game jam (or two) and then accidentally make a game instead? 'Cause I sure have... :D

WHAT WAITS BEYOND is an immersive solo journaling game about death, loss, and regret. In Beyond, you find yourself in a starship at the edge of a black hole, all hope lost and the end of the road right in front of you. It's unlikely your character and their crew will have a happy ending, only that they'll try to make the most of it in spite of their fear and hopelessness.

What will you reflect on in your last moments, and how will your crew mates respond to their approaching end?

In Beyond, you'll play Wish Solitaire. Each turn will guide you with journaling prompts and, occasionally, events that interrupt your contemplation-- some making things a little easier, others potentially bringing an abrupt end to your game.

Abducted is a solo or co-op story-telling tabletop role-playing game that places players in the shoes of a human character who has been abruptly abducted by an alien race.

Players create both their human character and their alien character, determining their characteristics and motivations, and then utilize a deck of playing cards, with corresponding in-game tables, as prompts to progress the story forward.

As the game unfolds, players journal their experiences in first-person, chronicling their struggles to understand and communicate with their alien captors, their attempts to escape, and the emotional toll of being forcibly removed from their home planet.

With each draw of the deck, players are presented with new challenges and opportunities, and must use their wit, cunning, empathy, or aggression to navigate the alien environment they find themselves in. Abducted is a game that tests players' ability to think creatively, empathize deeply, and write compelling narratives as they craft their own unique stories of survival in a world that is completely foreign to them.

(Co-op rules for 1 human and 1 alien player are included!)
