i feel like he’s the type of guy to happily listen to everyone else’s music, and he doesn’t really complain about it either. but if we’re talking about the main music he listens to on his own, he really likes alternative/indie-pop, and generally listens to upbeat, feel-good songs. he kinda discovered some of the more indie artists and songs when he overheard it playing from vylad’s room one day.

the internet's lack of nuance in general is always annoying but one thing i see come up over and over again is people refusing the acknowledge that book piracy is different than pirating tv or movies. and it is. it absolutely is.

unlike tv or movies, where, with some exceptions, everyone gets paid an agreed upon amount for their work, regardless of how much money the end product makes, authors make royalties- meaning how much they make is completely dependent on how many copies sell. some authors get an advance, which is a flat fee you get no matter what, but you don't start making royalties until you "earn out" your advance - so if i get an advance of, say, $10,000, i don't get any royalties for my book until it's sold enough copies to make $10,000 in royalties and paid the publisher back for the advance. most books never get that far. and $10,000 is not a number to sneeze at, but when you consider that books can take months to years to write, plus editing time, plus marketing (because 95% of that responsibility falls on the author unless you are extremely lucky) - when you break it down to how much money you're making for every hour of work you put into a book, it's really not a living wage, unless you're one of the lucky few who sells a lot of copies consistently, and/or gets large enough advances that you can live on it for a year or two while you write your next book.

i've seen some well-meaning people say that pirating from indie authors is wrong because they don't have the support or resources of a publishing house, and often don't sell a lot of copies at all - which is true. but i think a lot of people don't fully realize that most authors who are traditionally published, even ones who have had overall positive experiences with their publishers, don't usually make that much either. like i said, most people never earn out their advance, and most authors have to handle marketing mostly themselves - the books everyone's talking about, most of them probably got a big marketing push from the publisher with more money behind it. which isn't a dig at those books; publishers put money behind projects they think will make money, often because those books are good! but it is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and the books that get covered by every reviewer, get goodreads banner ads, get quotes from famous authors, end up in subscription boxes? very much the exception, and that's because the publisher can't afford to do that for every book. obviously sometimes there's an underdog, a book that didn't get a big marketing push but gets great word-of-mouth and grows that way, but if you're trying to make a living writing, you have to work for that to happen.

so with all that in mind, it really grinds my gears to see authors who say, "hey, book piracy significantly hurts my income" being called greedy, selfish, or "scabs".

i think some people think, "wow, you have a publishing deal from a big 5 publisher with a five-figure advance, and you still want more money? how greedy!" because they don't fully realize how the math actually works out for most authors.

like, pedro pascal is getting his fat paycheck no matter how many people pirate the mandalorian. no one working on dear evan hansen lost a dime because of the bootleg recordings floating around. and for the big new york times bestselling authors? yeah, most of them probably won't be hurt by people pirating their book instead of buying it. almost certainly stephen king is not going to notice if a few thousand people download an illegal pdf of the shining. but most authors, it does have an impact.

obviously, there is some nuance here - not everyone can afford books to read, and not everyone can access a library. and obviously if a book is out of print, that's a different discussion entirely. but "it's fine to pirate books because piracy is always ethical and victimless and authors who are against it are just scabs who hate poor people" doesn't really hold water for me. authors are not the bad guy for wanting to be compensated for their labor, and while it's not the reader's fault the royalties system doesn't let most authors make a good living at it, it's also not the author's fault.

if you want free books that don't screw the author over, advocate for more libraries with more funding! most libraries will also take requests for books to purchase for their collection, and, at least in the USA, "interlibrary loans" will let them temporarily borrow a book from another library system if someone wants it. see if your library is part of libby and hoopla, and if they're not, suggest they join. if you have a little extra money but can't afford new books, thriftbooks is a great place for cheap used books.

like i said, i am not saying everyone who ever pirated a book is a bad person, or that there's never a justifiable reason. i just wanted to introduce more nuance into the conversation.

Some clarifications/notes on each

For those thinking due to not just it being a video game but the kind of game it is that What Remains Of Edith Finch would be unstageable, just look at Fun Home as if WROEF could be a musical I could see it having that sort of structure. Only issue would be how exacting one has to be for casting biracial characters as Lewis, Milton and Edith Jr. are all half-white-half-Indian but otherwise I think this really could pop off (I mean as much as a musical that might share similar target demographics to This Is Us could be said to "pop off"). Y'know, with the right set designer the visual style could be amazing on stage and since my vision for the sound of this show ever since I had the idea that WROEF could work on stage is basically "PNW indie folk" because it's set on Orcas Island, Washington maybe an indie artist from that area could help with the music

I feel like the only reason (unless there's some rights thing I'm not aware of) we haven't had a Dead Poets Society musical is who the hell do you get to fill the shoes of the late great Robin Williams and not just because that's what I'm stuck on too

some of the stuff in the first Librarian movie might seem difficult to technically pull off on stage but I think there's shows that have done similar and while I did find a surprisingly perfect dream casting for movies-era!Flynn (Daniel Radcliffe, close to the right age, right amount of geeky-yet-still-charismatic and wouldn't it seem perfect for him to step back into another fantastical hero's journey 20-ish years after Harry Potter) I haven't really got a lead on who'd work for anyone else

The main issue I see (if this is a thing Disney would do) with bringing Inside Out to the stage is not what you'd think as (while some would still take some creativity) some of the seemingly-unstageable parts could be pulled off with creative use of stuff like projector-screens. No, the issue is I don't think there's ever been an existing musical that would have the physical aspects (as of course they'd have to be able to pull off the part acting/singing/dancing/wise too) of casting rely as much on actors' figures as this would as Sadness would have to be short and chubby, Anger would have to be short and stocky and Fear would have to be tall and skinny and I worry either these kinds of requirements would potentially be accidentally-a-little-noninclusive or at least make casting this show an absolute bitch

I specified movie and/or book for Wonder (which I had to clarify what I meant for because that's a vague title) because idr how they differ plot-wise. But yeah I think this could totally work and hit the same kind of Tonybait vibes as Dear Evan Hansen was attempting but with a much less morally-problematic story (and Daveed Diggs and Mandy Patinkin were both in the movie so they could perhaps reprise their roles in a stage version)

I'm surprised no one's ever seriously thought of a Scott Pilgrim stage musical before given that the seeds of a musical are there in the movie, maybe it's because it'd have to avoid both of the problems that plagued Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark (effect/stunt-induced actor injuries and, in the words of the great Neil Patrick Harris, "death-defying budget overruns") in addition to how specific the ethnicities of some of the characters (and therefore actors) have to be. But figure those out easily and you could get a potential sci-fi cult-classic on the level of Be More Chill (though that's not to say it couldn't be even more successful)

So which of these shows would you most want to see on Broadway if they could be?

VYLAD, ZANE, AARON

THEIR DYNAMICS!

Zane and Vylad always butt heads, naturally- as they're brothers, but there are times where they get along and work together. At that point, you should probably be worried.

Vylad and Aaron don't really know each other all that well, but they both are one in the same when it comes down to the people they care about and they can be pretty protective.

Zane and Aaron don't typically get along, but when it comes down to Aphmau they tend to do more things together. On the side, they would grow to be better friends.

THE MUSIC VIBES

Zane doesn't typically listen to musicals unless it's something Aphmau forced him into listening.

His usual music taste is composed of mostly Emo music, and punk-rock. Although, Zane definitely doesn't mind listening to the cutesy My Little Horsie soundtrack once in a while.

Whatever songs you think of when you hear the words emo music, thats what he listens to.

Vylad listens to a lot of musicals in his spare time, and they are something he is very passionate about. His #1 favorite musical is Be More Chill.

Vylad's regular music taste is more along the lines of Soft Indie, and Indie Pop.

He definitely listens to Conan Gray, Mitski, Cavetown, and BRYE

Aaron definitely listens to a select few musicals, but he's getting into more and more as time goes on. The one he likes the most is Dear Evan Hansen.

As for his usual music, he is the most diverse. Aaron's range goes all over the place. He mostly listens to Rock and Metal though.

He is the stereotypical heavy rock fan. Listens to Slipknot, and System of a Down. As well as Skillet sometimes.

Hello, person!

I’m Mr. Chat! Here’s my intro post that took way too long to get out!

Y’all can call me Mr. Chat or just Chat if you want, I go by he/him or they/them pronouns!

I’m a transmasc panromantic ace, and a total dork!

I like musicals, my favourite is Be More Chill, but I love Ride the Cyclone, Heathers, Hamilton, The Greatest Showman and yes, I do consider myself a reluctant fan of Dear Evan Hansen. I’m trying to get into more, so give you recommendations for musicals to watch or listen to the soundtracks of!

I’m big on cartoons, my favourite being My Little Pony (friendship is magic), with Tangled the Series coming in as a close second, I’m also a huge fan of Gravity Falls, Amphibia, The Owl House, Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss (reluctantly), and a slight fan of Murder Drones, Ramshakle, and The Amazing Digital Circus!

Video games? Love em! My all time favourite is Omori, but there’s loads of others I like, such as Bugsnax, Spiritfarer, Undertale/Deltarune, Night In The Woods, Cuphead, and I enjoy Pokémon and Zelda, too! So yeah, I’m very big on indie games.

I also really like books! My favourite book ever is Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White, but I enjoy Warrior Cats, Wings Of Fire, and books on psychology!

As for my general hobbies, I draw, read, write, and I sometimes like to cook, sew and yap about my interests!
