"Animesh Kujur: The Rising Star of Indian Sprinting"
In the realm of Indian athletics, a new sensation is on the horizon, and his name is Animesh Kujur. At just 20 years old, he’s already making waves in the sprinting world, with his sights set on breaking records and achieving greatness.
Tumblr media
It all started with a bold move at last year’s Under-23 meet in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, where Animesh, on a whim, approached renowned English coach Martin Owens. Little did he know, this chance encounter would change the trajectory of his athletic career. Owens, the head coach of the Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics HPC, saw potential in the young sprinter and invited him to undergo selection trials.
Fast forward to today, and Animesh has already left his mark on the track. Clocking an impressive 20.62 seconds, he clinched the 200 meters gold at the Federation Cup in Bhubaneshwar, coming second only to Amalan Borgohain’s national record. Additionally, his stellar performance has earned him a spot in the 100 meters final, solidifying his status as one to watch in the sprinting world.
Animesh’s journey to success has been fueled by determination and unwavering support from his family. Hailing from the Maoist-affected Bastar region, where his father serves in the state police, Animesh’s upbringing instilled in him a love for sports from an early age. Despite facing challenges, such as being deemed overage due to his towering height, Animesh persevered, guided by his parents’ belief in his potential.
Under Coach Owens’ mentorship, Animesh has undergone rigorous training and discipline, transforming both physically and mentally. With a body fat percentage of just 7 percent and a strict diet regimen, he’s primed to take on the world’s best sprinters.
While Animesh dreams of qualifying for the Paris Olympics with a time of 20.16 seconds, Coach Owens emphasizes the importance of balancing confidence with practicality. With a year free of international meets, Animesh has the opportunity to hone his skills and showcase his talent on the global stage.
As Animesh Kujur continues to chase his dreams and push the boundaries of Indian sprinting, one thing is certain — the future of athletics is brighter with him leading the charge. Keep an eye on this rising star as he blazes a trail towards greatness.

It occurs to me that I have yet to cover an actual bony fish for Wet Beast Wednesday, so it's billfish time. Billfish are a group of related fish in the families Xiphidae (swordfish) and Istioporidae (marlins) that are knows for their long, pointed rostra, commonly known as bills. The taxonomic placement of billfish is something of an open question. Some sources place them with barracudas in the order Istiophoriformes while newer sources group billfish and barracudas with the tuna and mackerels in a group that I'm delighted to inform you are called scrombroids.
Tumblr media
(image: a swordfish)
All 12 living species of billfish are large, migratory predators which live in the epipelagic zone (sunlit region) of the open ocean that rarely approach shore. As they either lack teeth or have small, file-like teeth, they feed primarily on small fish they can swallow whole. Billfish typically hunt schooling fish like mackerel or herring by swimming through the school, waving their bill from side to side to strike and stun and/or injure fish so they can be easily eaten on a second pass. Despite common depictions, billfish rarely impale or slice apart prey. Some species may also use their bills for defense as bills have been found imbedded in predators such as sharks. There are reports of billfish charging boats and getting their bills stuck, which is likely accidental. Many pelagic fish are attracted to floating objects so the billfish may have charged fish around the boat or mistaken the boat for a school of fish. Swordfish have broad, flat bills while marlins have rounded bills.
Tumblr media
(image: a swordfish skeleton)
Billfish are considered highly migratory as they are constantly moving, migrating to follow the currents and find the best feeding grounds for their prey. Some species restrict their migration to certain regions (with half of the living species living primarily or exclusively in the Indian Ocean) while others, like the swordfish, live worldwide. Because of their constant migration and wide distribution, it can be hard to find and study them in the wild. Consequently, little is known of their movements and life histories, which complicates conservation efforts. All species live primarily within the epipelagic zone, but some will occasionally descend to the mesopelagic (twilight) zone. They have specialized swim bladders that can quickly compensate for pressure changes. This allows billfish in the mesopelagic to quickly ascend where other fish would have to slowly acclimate to the pressure difference. In the open ocean, speed is often one of the most important traits for both predator and prey, as there is nowhere to hide. Billfish are masters of speed. All species are capable of rapid bursts of speed, though the sailfish holds the record for the world's fastest fish. They have been reported moving up to 111 km/h (69 mph) though more modern estimates suggest this is an exaggeration and their top speed is between 37 and 55 km/h (23 to 23 mph). Like cheetahs, billfish are sprinters, only able to move so fast in short bursts. Billfish can tuck their dorsal fins into grooves on their backs to further streamline their bodies and are slightly endothermic, keeping their body temperature a few degrees above the water temperature, both adaptations that help with their speed.
Tumblr media
(image: two marlin and some fish that are about to have a very bad day)
The swordfish (Xiphias gladius) is the most famous billfish and has several physiological differences from its marlin cousins. Interestingly, they have both teeth and scales as juveniles, but lose them ad adults. During the day, swordfish live in deep water, hunting in the deep scattering layer (which is worthy of its own post), ascending to shallower water at night. They are known to bask with their dorsal fins out of the water and to jump out of the water, likely an attempt to dislodge lampreys and remoras. Another famous billfish is the sailfish, a species of marlin known for its extremely large dorsal fin, which extends down most of the back. Known as the sail, this fin is raised during hunting to herd prey and is kept flat against the body most of the time. Sailfish have also been seen raising their sails after hunts, probably using them to cool down after a strenuous period of activity. Sailfish were previously divided into two species, the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific species, but most sources now consider them to be the same species.
Tumblr media
(image: a sailfish with sail raised hunting a group of small fish)
All species of billfish are popular gamefish and many are fished commercially. Anglers consider billfish to be highly coveted due to their large sizes and the fights they put up. They are one of the more dangerous gamefish as they can easily injure or kill a person with their bills while thrashing around. There are no reports of billfish attacking someone unprovoked. Many species are being overfished or are having they prey overfished and conservation efforts have been put in place for some of them.

What you're made of Chapter 4: The Fall
Tumblr media
Memories flash through Penelope's mind as she waits for the 549 ball of 30 lead to approach her heart.
The unrecognizable body of Portia Featherington is removed from the waiting room floor of Featherington's estate. Lady Bridgerton opens up Number 5 so Penelope can live with her family after the Featherington family loses their title. The letter she wrote to Dutchess Daphne Hastings with Marina's last love letter from Gorge Crane. Her first kiss with Colin underneath the moon at the Featherington's gardens. The confrontation about her affair with Colin and the friendship reunion with Eloise within a day. Anthony's reaction to being informed of Marina's devious plans as a result of the information Pen collected through Eloise. Sneaking out to the Modiste to see Colin under the shadows. Seeing her first time being intimate with Colin from Marina's mirror at Bloomington. The rest of the Bridgerton family's reaction to learning about Lady Bridgerton being poisoned little by little during tea time. Slowly witnessing Colin's fall from the bottom of the stairway. And the most memorable moment comes last. The first time Penelope met Colin and Eloise Bridgerton at Hyde Park.
The Va Boo from the Queen Anne Rifle is all Pen waits for while she closes her eyes tight.
The cock goes off.
Nothing comes out.
Relief washes over Penelope's petite form as Anthony yells from the other side of the door, "NOW!'.
Her blue eyes open in shock from the order while Marina's face goes pale white in fear.
"It is over, Marina." Pen declares in a raspy tone before finding it hard to breathe.
Marina nods in acceptance of her defeat while a group of Bow Street Runners busts open the door of Colin's bed chamber.
A boom goes off, and the applewood doors loosen from the door hinges before the two women see them fall to the ground.
The leader of the runners rushes up to Marian before kicking the Queen Anne Rifle from her hands with his right foot, and several of his men gather around her.
Two of the men in heavy armor man-handle the struggling Marina before placing handfuls around her wrist.
By then, the people in the room witness Penelope Featherington's body fall to the floor.
After almost dying in her love's bedroom, Pen has an out-of-body experience and sees the consequences of her cousin's actions.
Mariana is out of the room with her hands in handcuffs.
Rae, her new maid-in-waiting, looks over Pen's unresponsive body with concern and relief to see her breathing.
A physician of five and four hastily enters the bed chamber, followed by Pen's best friend, Eloise. Her brown eyes look in Pen's direction with concern before listening to the physician as he explains the condition of her unconscious brother's health.
The last person to enter the chaotic room is the Viscount himself, Anthony Bridgerton.
Penelope hears white noise until Anthony starts shouting orders, "MISS FEATHERINGTON! KATE, YOU MUST MAKE HASTE! RAE, GO FETCH WATER."
The young brunette maid named Rae doesn't hesitate to accept the order. The thin white teen runs out of the room, and a light brown woman in a gorgeous Indian blue dress comes running from hearing her husband's frantic tone.
"PEN-" Anthony was about to say more to his wife about the sprinter's whereabouts when the leader of Bow Street Runners asked to privately speak with him about tonight's matters.
The last thing Penelope sees before she blacks out is Kate rushing towards her direction.
'Is this death?' Pen thinks to herself while her body floats in nothingness.
A bright light grabs the woman in a white chamise attention, and she follows the source to find a man walking in her direction.
The man is wearing a white vest and trousers. The first two bottoms of his lean shirt are open to show his chest hair curls, and his blue eyes shine with kindness. He charmingly smiles at Penelope as they meet face-to-face.
It takes a few seconds for his face to be recognizable while the lady in white attire becomes content to see him.
"Colin, the plan worked! Marina is gone," she exclaims in glee.
Colin embraces her with an enthusiastic hug before whispering. "Yes, I saw the whole thing from here! Penelope, my lady, you must go back. We need you to live so we may become a family."
Pen fearfully asks, "Will you be there, Colin?"
Colin looks down at her with love behind his eyes before reassuring her, "It may take some time for me to arrive, but you must wake up. My Pen, Kate is shitty herself from you being unresponsive, and that is so not like her!"
Pen and Colin laugh at his foul language before seeing him leaning down and passionately kissing her lips.
Pen's eyes close to embrace the enduring kiss from the man she loves before reopening them to find her vision blurry.
Rapidly, her heart is beating from the acceleration of being Marina's fourth victim, but she ignores it to follow a woman's voice.
Kate Bridgerton.
"Penelope, Can you hear me." Kate frantically asks as she feels the Viscountess's hands on her broad shoulders.
"Colin," Penelope whispers, and her vision clears.
Kate sighs in relief, "The physician-accoucheur says Colin should be fine. As for him waking up, it could take a couple of days or more."
Pen acknowledges Colin's state of mind before hearing Kate state in bewilderment, "I can't believe your plan with Colin worked. Thank goodness Rae got Colin's steward to take the bullet out of Marina's gun while cleaning the rifle."
Pen smiles at the Viscountess' praise before seeing Kate's right hand pushing a glass of water onto her medium-sized lips.
Lady Kate is about to ask Pen another set of questions when the leader of the Bow Street Runners makes his presence known before the two ladies.
"Good evening, Lady Bridgerton. Miss. Featherington." The man announces with a bow, "My name is Richard Stealton. May I have a word with Miss Featherington?"
"Of course!" Kate replies as she helps Pen sit up.
They get up from their previous position on the floor before saying goodbye.
Pen then brushes off the fake dust from her light green lacy dress before giving her full attention to Stealton.
He clears his throat before stating his report.
"Lord Bridgerton has informed me of all the information he gathered about your cousin. He also told me that you have a paper that needs to be signed by Mrs. Thomson to finalize the state of her affairs with Mr. Colin Bridgerton. Do you have the paper, Miss Featherington?"
Pen pulls out the folded paper from her corset before confessing," I was hoping to have my cousin sign it before she attacked me."
Mr. Stealton nods from her commentary while his hand accepts the beige parchment.
The blonde-haired man with green eyes states, "Mr. Colin Bridgerton is a lucky fellow to have you, Miss Featherington. Nevertheless, I would advise you not to do this again. For next time, your scheme may not work in your favor."
Pen stares at the man with determination and pride, "Colin is my everything. Without him, there is no air. But rest assured, Mr. Stealton, it shall not occur again!"
The man of four and three nods with amusement behind his eyes before walking away.

From Gym to Field: Decoding the Essentials of Sports Nutrition Supplements in India
India's sporting landscape is experiencing a seismic shift. Cricket remains the undisputed king, but a wave of fitness enthusiasts and professional athletes across diverse disciplines are rewriting the narrative. From weightlifting platforms to badminton courts, a burning desire for peak performance and optimal health fuels their every lunge and push-up. However, this journey towards sporting glory needs more than just grit and determination – it demands a strategic alliance with the right sports nutrition supplements.
Tumblr media
But navigating the world of sports nutrition supplements in India can be as daunting as a 100-meter sprint blindfolded. With aisles overflowing with colorful tubs and jargon-filled labels, where does one begin? Fear not, aspiring athletes, for this guide decodes the essentials, unraveling the mysteries and empowering you to make informed choices.
The Power of Protein: Protein, the building block of muscle tissue, is the MVP of sports nutrition supplements in India. Whether you're a bodybuilder sculpting your physique or a sprinter chasing milliseconds, ensuring sufficient protein intake is paramount. Whey protein, with its fast absorption rate, dominates the market, but options like soy or casein protein cater to specific dietary needs or slower release preferences. Remember, protein isn't a magic bullet – prioritize a balanced diet first, then supplement according to your individual goals and training intensity.
Creatine: The Explosive Ally: For explosive exercises like weightlifting and sprinting, creatine acts like a potent power booster. It fuels your muscles' energy reserves, allowing you to train harder and recover faster. While naturally found in meat and fish, supplementing with creatine can optimize muscle function and enhance performance, especially in vegetarians or for short-term bursts of activity.
The Vitamin and Mineral Ensemble: Vitamins and minerals play a crucial role in various bodily functions, and deficiencies can hamper your training progress. Multivitamins offer a convenient way to fill nutritional gaps, ensuring optimal energy levels, immunity, and muscle recovery. However, specific minerals like magnesium and potassium are also vital for athletes. Focus on individual needs and consult a sports nutritionist for personalized recommendations.
Beyond the Bulky Tubs: Sports nutrition doesn't solely reside in protein shakes and creatine powders. Pre-workout formulas energize your body and mind before strenuous sessions, while post-workout recovery drinks replenish electrolytes and accelerate muscle repair. Energy gels and bars provide convenient fuel sources during long training sessions or endurance events. Explore these diverse options to tailor your nutritional strategy to your specific needs and training schedule.
Caution – The Doping Dilemma: Remember, the quest for performance enhancement cannot compromise ethical boundaries. Doping substances are not only harmful to your health but also carry strict penalties. Always verify supplement ingredients against banned substances lists and consult professional guidance before adding anything new to your regimen.
Local Champions of the Field: Don't overlook the rising stars amongst Indian sports nutrition brands. Companies like Fast&Up, Steadfast Nutrition, and Myprotein offer quality supplements tailored to the Indian palate and dietary preferences. Explore these options alongside international brands, comparing ingredients, cost-effectiveness, and brand values to find the perfect fit for your goals.
In conclusion, unlocking the potential of sports nutrition supplements in India requires knowledge, guidance, and smart choices. By understanding your individual needs, researching trusted brands, and prioritizing clean ingredients, you can harness the power of these nutritional allies to fuel your journey from the gym to the field, and ultimately, to sporting glory.
Remember, sports nutrition is not a shortcut to success – it's a strategic tool to complement your hard work and dedication. Choose wisely, train diligently, and let your athletic spirit soar!

Yet it is the new names that make the BBC 100 women list so unique. Among them are the 28 Climate Pioneers, announced to coincide with the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28, starting later this month in Dubai.
They include Indian photographer Arati Kumar-Rao, Paraguayan sprinter Camila Pirelli, South African freediving instructor Zandile Ndhlovu, Pakistani midwife Neha Mankani, Nigerian mental health advocate Jennifer Uchendu and Thai campaigner for indigenous and LGBTQ+ rights Matcha Phorn-in.
Other women celebrated for their work tackling the climate crisis in different fields, include Brazil's state minister Sonia Guajajara, firefighter Sofia Kosacheva, and climate advisers Iryna Stavchuk and Christiana Figueres.
Liliane Landor, Senior Controller of BBC News International Services says: “It is fantastic to see the truly remarkable women named on this year’s BBC 100 Women list. This diverse list of influential and ground-breaking grassroots women, who have been making a difference in their field – from community level to international politics – are an inspiration to us all.
“In a year where extreme heat, wildfires, floods and other natural disasters have been dominating headlines, and where wars have weighed heavily, it is more important than ever that the BBC World Service continues to shine a spotlight on women globally and their fight back against climate change.”
Alongside the list, BBC 100 Women will present a season of specially commissioned content and documentaries, featuring the untold stories of some of this year’s BBC 100 Women, including:

In Conversation
BBC News will broadcast exclusive conversations with some of the most globally recognised women on this year’s list:
BBC 100 Women In Conversation: Amal Clooney, Michelle Obama and Melinda French Gates
Each year, 12 million underaged girls are forced into marriage – a crisis that at the current rate will take over 300 years to fix, says the UN. Now, three of the world’s most high-profile humanitarians have vowed to tackle the issue together. In a BBC 100 Women exclusive, Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney and Melinda French Gates talk about the work they do to combat child marriage and amplify the efforts of grassroots organisations.
Airs on BBC News on Saturday 25 November at 01:30 and 08:30 GMT, and Sunday 26 November at 07:30, 14:30 and 21:30 GMT
BBC 100 Women In Conversation: Gloria Steinem
The face of the women's rights movements in the US during the 1970s and an icon of feminism, Gloria Steinem has spent the last 50 years focusing her efforts on advancing women's political participation and reproductive rights. Her activism followed her career in journalism, where she was the co-founder of Miss Magazine, one of the first US publications to focus on women's issues beyond the perils of housekeeping. Now at 89 years old, Steinem has sat down with BBC 100 Women to discuss how feminism has changed over the decades, the impact of cancel culture, and what the future might look like for women's rights around the world.
Airs on BBC News on Saturday 2 December at 12:30 GMT and Sunday 3 December at 00:30, 07:30 and 19:30

BBC 100 Women Documentaries. Rising Tides, Shifting Futures
With sea levels rising fast, women are leading grassroots efforts in coastal areas to help mitigate the effects of climate change. From Miami’s increasingly gentrified Little Haiti neighbourhood, to the fishing villages of eastern Ghana and the outskirts of Cape Town in South Africa, BBC 100 Women meets the women at the forefront of the climate battle – working against the odds to secure a future for themselves and their communities.
Airs on BBC News on Saturday 25 November at 02:30 and 15:30 GMT and Sunday 26 November at 00:30, 09:30 and 18:30 GMT
Ride Above It
Balance, stamina and sequins: BBC 100 Women enters the show-stopping world of disabled equestrian vaulting. A small-town troop of disabled children and women in Italy train hard all year and compete to find glory in the ring, doing gymnastics and coordinated dances on a horseback. But the rewards of the sport go well beyond the medals – as they work to deal with stigma and overcome their own fears, one pirouette at a time.
Airs on BBC News on Saturday 2 December at 02:30 and 15:30 GMT and on Sunday 3 December at 09:30 and 18:30 GMT
On The Road with Mexico’s Traileras
Clara, Liszy and Paty are breaking gender barriers in the male-dominated cargo transport industry – they are some of Mexico’s traileras, women truck drivers travelling distances on the country’s dangerous routes. Robberies and abuse are part of the hazards they face in the job – but the traileras are determined to overcome adversity. BBC 100 Women rides with them as they work to make a better life for their families and change the face of the next generation of drivers in Latin America.
Airs on BBC News on Saturday 16 December
The Last Wakhi Shepherdesses
Deep into Pakistan’s Karakoram mountains lies the scenic Shimshal Valley, home to the Wakhi shepherdesses. Every year, over many generations, these women have taken their flocks to high pastures, where they prepare dairy products to barter while their animals graze during the warmer season. Their income has brought prosperity to the village and allowed them to build roads and provide an education for their children – but their tradition is about to end. BBC 100 Women follows the last shepherdesses on their journey up the mountains, on a dangerous trek 4,800m above sea level.
Airs on BBC News on Saturday 23 December
BBC 100 Women at COP28
BBC 100 Women will be present at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28, from 30 November to highlight the strand's commitment to telling the climate story. We will be holding a TV broadcast from Expo City, Dubai and from Nairobi, bringing some of our grassroot pioneers together to provide a space to share their thoughts and deeply personal experiences of living life right on the forefront of the climate crisis, amidst a growing sense of climate anxiety.
