What's wrong with that "culture isn't mean to be shared" post? It seems pretty sound in theory and in practice.
it is literally fascism. i am not being hyperbolic. "cultures should never intermingle" is one of the foundational pillars of fascist ideology. and before you interpret this post as "wow this white person is calling POC Nazis for Standing Up Against Cultural Appropriation", please remember that 1. the vast majority of cultural exchange takes the form of influences on food, music, loanwords, etc. and not "white girl wearing a headdress to Coachella" and 2. most of the classic examples of Cultural Appropriation that got bandied about on this site back in the day (and subsequently laid the bedrock for a good chunk of this site's understanding of cultural appropriation discourse) literally just. aren't. the two worst ones i can remember off the top of my head were "American museum puts on an exhibit where visitors can try on a kimono" and "Indian charity group applies henna to terminal cancer patients to make them feel prettier and some of these terminal cancer patients were white".
i can understand why you might think "white people should never take cultural inspiration from minorities or foreigners" (because lbr this discourse is always about white people) is a progressive idea but please. reread that sentence until you realize how bad it sounds.

Sleep a Way Out!
Thoughts/ some explanations below the cut
It's a little disappointing to me that even though Zero abducts everyone in 999 at night, none of them seem to be in their pj's. So this is what I imagine their pj's (or in some cases, clothes worn around the house) would look like.
(left to right)
Ace's boxer fit is purely vibes based. He just seems like that kinda guy.
Lotus: I tried to bring some of her girl boss energy into her pj's. I imagine she wraps her hair in silk so it doesn't get messed up at night.
Clover just seems like she would chill in an oversized cutesy onesie.
Snake: My historical fashion obsession rears its head. He's wearing a Banyan, which is a European gown/lounge wear from the 1700s based on the Kimono and possibly other Indian robes if I recall correctly. The flower on its sleeve is a Chinese Lantern plant. He's holding a chamber candle stick as well. His cap is just based on stereotypical goofy historical pjs, just for fun.
Junpei: I couldn't bring myself to remove what I saw as some of the most iconic parts of Junpei's original design so I just remixed them. Instead of a flannel shirt he's wearing flannel pajama pants and instead of "bisexual sneakers" he's wearing one bisexual slipper (the other one got lost). I was originally intending to give him a generic college or baseball tee but while I was replaying through Ai the Somnium files I spotted the 999 reference by Sunfish Pocket and thought it would be fun to give him an old Lemniscate shirt instead.
June: She has to be wearing purple. Her fashion sense seems to be very natural, with a lot of knitting and textile ornamentation which lead me to think she'd probably wear a nice, simple cotton nightgown. And the bunny slippers are a little nod to her backstory.
Santa: You know, I just get the impression that Santa sleeps in the same clothes he wears in the game. And with a build like that he's definitely getting enough sun to have some embarrassing tan-lines.
Seven: Again, kinda like Santa, I get the feeling his pajamas could be the same clothes he wears in the game. But the shower sandals are a must.
Guy 9: There just wasn't enough for me to go off of for him. So I deleted him :) Sorry. He blew up.

Fandom Problem #4972:
Me seeing art imagining Japanese characters in kimono as Indian characters in sari: Oh cool! Must reblog!
The artist's description: "there I fixed it, now they're POC"
Me: what the fuck?
Commenter on the art: "Japanese people are POC"
Artist's reply: "now they're visibly POC"
Me: what the fuck?

a new season of Bridgerton means a flood of my historical fashion youtube girlies bitching about the costuming. because how are you going to do an alternate-history Regency Era, and have no coherent design choices? i'm not even talking about jarringly modern fabrics, i'm talking about the opportunity to incorporate fashion sensibilities from the other cultures represented in the show in a way that still felt like Regency. and they squandered it.
like, the allegedly sari inspired dress they put the indian actress in was SO boring. they could have made a period-accurate regency dress out sari silk (which is bonkers cheap secondhand, btw) and that would have seriously fucked. there's already a rich fashion history regarding kimono silk being recycled into western gowns in the 1870s - what if that started sooner? what would that have looked like? what would regency gowns and suits look like made of aso oke cloth, or dyed using the adire method? just an absolute waste. the crime of being boring is unforgivable.

I want to talk about the stripes I make.
According to a book, there are 270 names for striped patterns in Japanese. Thousand stripes (sen-suji), ten-thousand stripes (man-suji), with kids stripes (komochi-jiima), twin stripes (futago-suji), fall stripes (taki-jima), bonito stripes (katsuo-jima), benkei stripes (benkei-jima), wickerwork stripes (ajiro-jima), etc., etc., etc.
Among these, I basically make random stripes, called “yatara-jima”.
Yatara-jima have no regularity in the arrangement of the stripes, and were originally woven to finish off the threads left over from weaving, and originated mainly for women's kimono.
Yes, weaving always produces surplus threads, but that does not mean that a regular number of threads can be taken.
If that were the case, it would be more fashionable to arrange them randomly... nowadays, but I think it's amazing that the people who first made them ( I suspect that they were everywhere in private kimonos) and put them on the market are so amazing.
I think there were people who thought it was interesting and stylish... but I wonder through what channels it spread. I wonder if it was a marketing strategy at the time to have ukiyo-e paintings of beautiful women drawn, or if the models happened to be wearing them. It’s similar to influencer marketing or buzzing on SNSs!? I can imagine all sorts of things.
Taking these cloths as an example, I used 19 different threads in total: three red, three yellow, five green, three grey, three purple, one off-white and one non-dyed white.
In my case, I of course use leftover thread, but basically, as in normal weaving, I have a design first and then prepare the thread. To be more precise, I have the design, dye the necessary colours, take some yarns out of the chest, lay them out, look at the colours and readjust the design. I use two or three threads of the same colour to create shading or variation in the slightly thicker stripes.
Tumblr media
But sometimes I feel that I have made a mistake, because when I add the weft yarn, there is not much difference, and in some cases it is a newly dyed yarn, and I feel like, "Wow, give me back my time!" Sometimes I feel like, “Wow, I want my time back!” I'm not experienced enough …
It is actually very difficult to distinguish between the two types of red cloth.
Tumblr media
It's not so much about making stripes, but more about the colour composition of the kimono or the shape of the cloth, so it may be a slightly different way of making it.
The right two madders look different, but...
-------
I used the same warp (silk) as this cloth and hand-spun ramie yarn as the weft, and of the 19 colours... 15 are included.
Red: Indian Madder (strong&pale), Sappanwood
Yellow: Amur Corktree (strong&pale), Gardenia
Green: Ōbaku x odour wood (two light varieties), Green leaf extract powder, Japanese Pagoda Tree x Indigo (strong&pale)
Grey: Cochineal (strong&pale), Sawtooth Oak
Purple: Cochineal, Lithospermum Erythrorhizon (strong&pale)
Off-white: Walnut

The Eel Deal
This was my first time drawing Frye’s face, and it was honestly one of the most rewarding fan art experiences of my life. She has such a good design!! OMG she has such an amazing design and I never really realized it until now…!
…I think it’s because I’ve never really seen her design rendered in a ‘hybrid-toon’ style like this, with her features ever so slightly exaggerated for effect. Tbh, I’m one of the very few Splatoon artists I’ve seen who draws like this; most artists either do ‘chibi-anime’, ‘semi-realism’ (there are SO many semi-realistic Splatoon artists; and it’s hilarious because you’d think it’d be the opposite), or something reflective of their own unique style that’s not really ‘on model’. And all that is fine, but with a design as unusual as Frye’s it means you never get to see how well it works in 2D all on its own. And it works SO WELL
Anyway, speaking of design: you may have noticed my final ‘bandit’ design for Frye changed a lot from its first draft, just like Shiver’s. I did like the original jacket, but I felt like I needed something less generic for the real thing. So I came up with this abstract shawl-looking thing, designed to resemble the pallu of the Indian saree. The long drape at the back kinda mirrors the shape of Shiver’s kimono-sleeves, which I’m very happy about. ^^
So in this re-concept, Frye’s eels have a job just like Master Mega does, albeit a less-mandatory one: if you feed them Power Eggs, they will accompany you into the lab spaces to search for things: secret rooms, locker decorations, and other hidden collectibles that contribute to your “percent completion” of the game. I imagine this as something you set up before entering a level, like the weapon select screen…maybe it could even be semi-interactive; like Agent 3 holding up different items for the eels to sniff, each one corresponding to something you can tell them to find for you. ^^
I also think it would be cool if, the more times you borrow the eels this way, the lower their Power Egg price becomes, as if you’re gradually ‘training’ them to help you. Maybe once you get down to the lowest possible price, Frye could congratulate you on becoming an ‘Honorary Eel-Charmer’ and give you a prize; something like that~

I Love splatoon but for awhile now I cant help but feel like Deep Cut’s designs miss the mark a little- so I finally tried to take a crack at redesigning them! Notes underneath the cut.
So first and foremost, I Know these designs are very detailed and “decorated”, but honestly? I kinda feel like shiver and frye’s designs BEG for that kind of thing- they’re based around traditional japanese and indian culture, both of which tend to have very detailed, opulent fashion.
Overall I feel like deep cut’s designs should’ve leaned WAY further into the ideas presented in their canon designs- from the cultural influences to the contrasting colors, etc etc.
I know that their canon designs are supposed to be “trendier” less traditionally accurate versions of their respective cultures’ clothes, which is why I tried to give Shiver a sort of asymetrical haori/kimono, as well as give Frye a Saree to go with her shawl. I also kinda threw out the weird sea through shawls since indian/japanese clothing is so textile and layered/patterened.
Finally I feel like frye’s design should be Dripping in gold. I took a lot of inspiration from her splatoween look cause tbh if u just recolored it to her default colors it would look Perfect.
I do wanna redesign big man eventually as well- I’ll probably take a lot of inspiration from brazilian carnival with lots of feathers and beads and stuff.

Night Gown
early 18th century
The Victoria & Albert Museum
"The loosely cut style of this man's informal robe is based on that of the Japanese kimono. Robes like this became popular in Europe from the mid-17th century, brought back by members of the East India Company, and by the 1670s European tailors were making them. The exact geographic and cultural source of the style was not generally well known in England, where they were called 'Indian gowns' when made of any non-European fabric, for example, Indian cottons, Chinese or Indian silks.
This nightgown is a striking and rare example, in very good condition for its age, made from blue silk damask woven in China for import into Europe. Such silks were primarily intended for furnishing, and appear in merchants' records as 'bed damasks'; the length of their pattern repeat was displayed to best advantage in the long drop of bed curtains. A silk damask of closely similar design to this was used to furnish a room in the summer palace of Prince Eugene of Savoy, Schlosshof, in 1725 (now in MAK in Vienna)."

the perniciousness of atomization
liberal academics spent decades to delegitimize, under threat of social and professional censure, all discourse about cultures, races, genders, ages, or social circumstance other than one's own. after all, to do so would be to engage at “construction of the other" - at best appropriation and at worst dehumanization
are you a man? you don't get to speak about women
are you a cis queer? you don't get to speak about transgender people
are you an old transwoman from Baltimore who has not undergone surgery? you don't get to speak about old transwomen from Baltimore who have
etc. etc. ad infinitum
then they did their utmost to extend this attitude into everyday life
if you're not Indian, you may not cook Indian food
if you're not Japanese, you may not wear a Japanese kimono
if you are not a Buddhist, you may not have Buddha statues in your house
at its logical conclusion, this is a world where every single person, reduced to their own, personal, unique and immutable characteristics and life experiences, lives disconnected from all others, never sharing in their experiences.
a world where everyone talks only about themselves
a world of enshrined egotism.

Germa and the Moon
More conspiracy. If you follow me and you don't like seeing my crazy posts please block the "conspiracy theory" tag.
I have very flimsy proof again, this is just a bunch of idle thoughts that occur to me while I was browsing the chapters to make my Moon theory post.
The Sixth Moon of Wano?
In my previous random word vomit I mentioned that adult Momonosuke's long fluffy hair and kimono cut gives him a similar silhouette to Judge. Well. Even better/worse, Younger Sukiyaki's FACE actually kind of looks like Judge:
Tumblr media
Sukiyaki even has that ugly chin too, except it's less noticeable because he has a thick beard.
Are they related?
I would like to bring back to attention that 5 of the 6 ruling clans of Wano have "moon" in their surnames. Koudzuki 光月, Fuugetsu 風月, Shimotsuki 霜月, Udzuki 雨月, and Amatsuki 天月. They all share the kanji for moon 月.
The sixth one, Kurozumi 黒炭, mysteriously does not.
A trend breaker like this seems a bit strange. Sure, it might just be to single out Kurozumi as the "odd one out" traitor, but what if that's because the original sixth clan left Wano?
Maybe Kurozumi, or whoever was before them, was appointed to take over the empty spot? And then what if the Germa/Vinsmoke ancestor is the "sixth moon", so to speak?
An additional layer to the conspiracy is "What if there is no sixth surname?"
Even if there's a "sixth moon", what if this is just a branch clan of the shogun himself? The Koudzuki? As I pointed out above, Judge kind of looks like Sukiyaki.
So the "missing moon" might not have a unique surname, and the daimyou in question was just "Koudzuki-something". The then-shogun's brother, maybe (or emperor or king, if there was a time in Wano when the ruler is not a shogun).
This happens to be relevant to the conspiracy theory that I mentioned in the same word vomit post. Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a renowned samurai hero and brother of the first shogun of Japan, was theorised to have fled Japan when his own brother tried to kill him. He then went on to become Genghis Khan. (Japanese Wikipedia entry about this theory)
It's a crackpot theory, and historically speaking Yoshitsune just died, but anyone can pick that up and rework it as fiction. A story that goes "the brother (or other relative) of the [ruler] fled the nation and became a new king elsewhere" is generic enough to fit into any fantasy setting.
(@theviolettulip It's not that much, but here it is! The rest of this post is not Wano-related conspiracy)
Various aspects of Germa that appears to be connected to the moon
Related to my theory of how moon = science/tech. Germa is explicitly introduced as a kingdom of science, so maybe their "goal" is to "chase after" the moon technology? Or, if the Wano connection turns out to be true, there's some other link between Wano and the Moon that they're going after.
Germa and the moon automata
Very, very flimsy connection here, and I always say I recognise any artwork-based incidental similarity could just be "design coincidence" that don't mean anything.
Still, are the Germa soldiers' hats and helmets related to the helmets of the moon automata? They have similar shape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
... Correlation? I'm just saying, you know?
"Garuda" refers to Lunarians --> from the Moon?
An even flimsier connection because Lunarians have not been confirmed to be from or connected to the moon (beyond its name).
Still, the design of King, the only currently known Lunarian, seems to be based on the mythological Garuda. A combination of the Indian and the Japanese version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Variations of the Indian Garuda statues depict him as looking like just a human man with wings, not bird faced.
The fire on King's back, though, resembled the Japanese Garuda (Karura), who has a fire mandala/halo on his back. Upper back, specifically. Karura also has "fire powers",
It's unclear how Judge got the Garuda epithet, but it seemed significant here.
The Vinsmoke children's modifications are meant to make them have the abilities of races connected to the moon?
1) Mink - Niji
The only one where I can most seriously point out proofs for.
Niji's electric ability seems very similar to the Mink tribe's Electro: generating electricity from their bodies, and channelling the electricity through weapons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since Niji says his sword is a sword with "the speed of light", not anything related to electricity, it suggests that the sword is not electric charged. The electricity comes from him. As shown with Inuarashi and Wanda above, the Mink are able to channel electricity through their weapons.
We know the Mink tribe's connection to the moon, which is their Sulong form. In which case, I do wonder if that's actually what Niji's permanent goggles are for. To, you know, block the moonlight so that he doesn't go on a Sulong rampage.
Carrot said that sunglasses can block the Sulong transformation, and we saw the proof of it with Pekoms having to take off his sunglasses for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) Lunarian - Sanji
Again, a bit jumping the gun here because we have no proof that Lunarians are related to the moon.
Still, Sanij's fire ability is possibly part of his modification, which in turn might be meant to make him be like a Lunarian.
Oda-sensei hinted that his fire resistance, which allows him to be able to do Diable Jambe without hurting himself, is actually not normal. Perhaps that's what his modification was intended to do? Diable Jambe is similar to the flaming kick that King did as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lunarians can make fire from various parts of their body, like we saw King light his hand and leg on fire. Sanji hasn't really done this yet, the full body combustion Hell Memories seems to imply that he might eventually be able to do that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3) Shandian - Yonji
Also somewhat flimsy, because super strength is a bit more generic than the other two.
Yonji's "super strength" could be meant to be based on the Shandian warriors, who we know are descended from the moon. Kalgara has incredible physical strength, and his iron ball on a chain is somewhat comparable to Yonji's Winch Danton (Guillotine).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*) Other yet unknown races?
There's no obvious counterparts to Ichiji and Reiju yet, so I could be wrong. Still, there are yet unknown info out there, so I'll have to bookmark this for now and keep a lookout.
Currently the only known light ability and poison ability users are from Devil Fruits, but some of the fruit abilities overlap/match with the natural abilities of some races. For example King can make fire and magma like Ace and Akainu. The fruit just extends the ability into allowing the users to turn their very bodies into fire and magma (is this why "mother nature" hates fruit users? Because it "twists" what's natural?).
Maybe there's just other beings out there with natural light and poison abilities.
"Exoskeleton", a reference to the moon/sky lobster?
The Vinsmoke kids' tough bodies were specifically called "exoskeleton" by Germa internally. Among many other things, "exoskeleton" (gaikokkaku 外骨格) also refers to the shell of crustaceans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a bit unusual terminology, especially because terms like "iron skin" seems more reasonable. For example, Superman was called Man of Steel because he's bulletproof.
Does it maybe reference the lobsters seen in Skypiea? In the ancient wall murals Enel saw in the moon, there appears to be a lobster and some unknown creature that could be the sky fish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What with my latest theory about how Sea (Prism) Stones, which originated from Wano, might be organic and perhaps even a "carapace" specifically, this seemed somewhat relevant.

We've been at a stage for a while now where people see fit to tell people of a particular culture that they're wrong about how their culture should be handled and such.
One of my fav examples.
Tumblr media
Then we get.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stupid question really, we all know why and it's not the bullshit "appreciation" some people tried to claim, not with everything else that's been called out over the cultural appropriation nonsense.
Double standard is pretty consistent, it's how trudeau managed to keep his job after all his blackface and weird dress up stuff.
youtube
Short answer yes, the Japanese love seeing it so unless you want to talk over the people you claim to be protecting shut up.
Also I traced the kimono back across time and continents and amazingly enough it's a item of clothing that's evolved and been adapted by different people and cultures all over the world and they all have their own take on it.
Nobody owns it

There it is, still on time! Happy Springfest!
💐🐥🐇🧸💐
Check the description if you want to know more about the design process on this one!
🌈Spring blossoms across the world!🌈
(my version of Deep Cut's Springfest outfits redesigned to match the cultures they represent)
💚🌸 Starting with Shiver and her japanese vibes, I gave her the hanami dango 🍡 from Frye's original design (because I found it super cute!) so I placed it on her earrings and folding fan. Adding to her green of this Splatfest and the sakura leitmotiv already present, I added more greenery by making her headpiece more elaborated with a branch sticking out, similar to a kunzashi! That and a short, modern take on a kimono set up her redesign.
🪷🩷 Moving on to Frye... Oh boy did her looks take a lot of effort and research!
So, as starters I wanted to her Indian vibe to shine, and decided to give her a bit of their own Spring celebration known as Holi, the Festival of Color. On the same note I give her a lotus headpiece that along with jewerly, a translucent half saree and her joyful vibes completed her look.
🌼🩵 And out dear Big Man, if course, had to be a Carnaval King! I made his headpiece waaaay more exaggerated and gave him a butterfly bow-tie cuz puns! I also learned that the national brazilian flower is called an "ipê amarelo" so I placed the small yellow flowers in his crown as well. Overall, gave him more color.
Here's a picture if the WIP!
Tumblr media
Anyhow, it's my version and a lot of people have done other lovely redesigns, but this is mine and I like it! I hope you guys enjoy it too! 💕
