FMP: Origins of the Seaside Fairground. LO1
Easter Week 2
Historic Amusement Parks and Fairground Rides By Historic England:
Summary:
With origins that can be traced to annual fairs and 18th-century pleasure grounds, and much influenced by America’s Coney Island amusement park of the 1890s, England has one of the finest amusement park and fairground ride heritages in the world. A surprising amount survives today. The most notable site is Blackpool Pleasure Beach which has an unrivalled heritage of pre-1939 fairground rides. Other early survivals in England include scenic railways at Margate and Great Yarmouth, and water splash rides in parks at Kettering, Kingston-upon-Hull and Scarborough that date from the 1920s.
The surviving seaside amusement parks at Blackpool, Great Yarmouth and Southport, Lancashire (re-opened), and Dreamland at Margate, were founded in the late 19th and early 20th century, but their origins can be traced back in Britain to the annual fairs that took place throughout the country. pg.2
Today, Coney Island no longer glitters so brightly, but the footprints of the parks are still evident. pg.4
In 1906 over three million people visited the Pleasure Beach. pg.6
Seaside amusement parks have been in a serious decline in England, with Blackpool, Great Yarmouth and Southport (re-opened) being the only traditional parks that have remained open. pg.20
Some seaside piers are now also the home to fairground rides. With space being limited many attractions are inevitably aimed at younger riders, but Blackpool’s South Pier offers the Sky Coaster and the Sky Screamer, rides that catapult the adventurous high into the sky. pg.20
Today the only fairground rides that enjoy statutory protection are Margate’s Scenic Railway at Dreamland (Grade II*) and the Water Chute at Wicksteed Park at Kettering (Grade II). However, England has a rich heritage of amusement park rides and Blackpool Pleasure Beach has the finest collection of historic rides in the world. Great Yarmouth also has an early Scenic Railway of international importance. In due course national and local listing is likely to include these to reflect their importance to telling the story of our seaside holidays. pg.20
Reflection, LO4:
This source talked a lot about the rides themselves, but it was still insightful to see how there has been a decline in seaside amusements.

Fairground attractions: A genealogy of the pleasure ground By Deborah Philips:
The excursion trains that made the Great Exhibition such a popular success were also responsible for transforming Blackpool into a major tourist attraction and made possible the ‘world’s first working class seaside resort’ (Walton 1998: 10). The coming of the railways in the 1840s had transformed Blackpool from a provincial resort with a focus on sea bathing to the first commercial leisure resort in Britain. pg.20
Coney Island in New York had been, like Blackpool, a seaside resort that grew because of the railways. Excursion trains brought in their wake investors in hotels and attractions, so that what had once been a board walk of small independent stalls became America’s largest commercial pleasure ground. pg.21
The two seaside resorts combined popular modernity, mass consumption and a new collective experience. At the same time, they offered settings for more traditional entertainments across a broad taste spectrum: from dioramas, firework spectacles and music and dance halls. (Cross and Walton 2005: 55) pg.23
The attractions at Coney Island and Blackpool were closely allied to those unveiled at the trades fairs and exhibitions held across the world throughout the late nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Each World’s Fair displayed the newest technological attractions, and these were rapidly taken up and transported to the fairgrounds of Coney Island and Blackpool. pg.23
Blackpool’s motto was (and remains) ‘Progress’, and its appeal lies in its constant reinvention of seaside traditions while simultaneously offering the visitor the latest technological attraction. Like Coney Island, its attractions, from carousels to space pods, relied on industrial innovations. pg.23
Hastings mentioned!:
British seaside locations have developed their own superstitions and myths of smugglers and pirates. Ailing seaside towns in Britain have capitalised on real histories of smuggling and adventuring, and converted their caves into tourist attractions and their historical smugglers into dashing pirates. ‘Smugglers’ Adventure’ in Hastings was once the site of battles between customs and smugglers, and the publicity invites the visitor to ‘relive the dangers and excitement that faced the smugglers and Customs officers’ when some ‘40,000 men were involved in this illicit, profitable but dangerous trade’ (www.smugglersadventure.co.uk). The Hastings caves are real, with caverns and tunnels that genuinely did witness the ‘illicit trade’ of smuggling. The ‘themed experience’, however, owes more to the Disney attraction Pirates of the Caribbean than it does to its own history, with its animatronic figures and props of oak casks, muskets and galleon ships. Littlehampton Harbour Park, also on the British South Coast, not far from Hastings, has erased its harbour history entirely in favour of piracy; its promotional leaflet is adorned with the skull and crossbones and features smiling children dressed in the eye patches, headscarves and stripy tee shirts that are the iconic pirate uniform. pg.166
Combinations of these titles and elements continue to appear in fairground and seaside attractions; ‘Space Pirates’ is a mechanical coin-operated ride at Brighton Pier. pg.183
Reflection, LO4:
This book was more insightful in giving me the contexts as to why things were made the way they were, such as why the seaside is embodied by stories of pirates, and why Blackpool stood out from the rest of the parks. It was an exciting surprise when Hastings came up, and I recall seeing people dressed as pirates along the seafront, wondering where there was relevancy.

The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour - 025 11/02/23 Defy TV 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM EST Filmed at the Good Time Theatre at Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania
SEGMENT ONE (SEVEN MINUTES):
- We are again welcomed in by Sudu Upadhyay for another week of CORE action. Sudu teases an important announcement for later in the broadcast. Raven speculated on what the announcement could be, a reality show about the behind the scenes happenings, CORE switching their name to Impact Wrestling, or, as some fans have speculated, Raven taking control of CORE creative? Sudu told fans they'd find out before the end of tonight's broadcast.
- The Great Pro-Wrestling Adventure Hour opening aired set to "Black Swan Lake" by Janko Nilovic.
Giant Baba Yaga and Fuego Del Sol vs. Angus Legstrong and Rachel Armstrong Giant Baba Yaga and Fuego Del Sol defeated Angus Legstrong and Rachel Armstrong with a running neckbreaker from Baba Yaga on Armstrong. (3:40)
SEGMENT TWO (EIGHT MINUTES):
- Sudu Upadhyay brought out a special guest all the way from Australia that will be making her CORE debut soon, Charli Evans. She began to say a few words to the audience but the segment was interrupted by Titus Alexander. Titus said that he and Charli have something in common. Titus asks Charli if she could wrestle anyone in the world who would that be, to which Charli responded Eddie Kingston. Alexander said he feels the same way, but that unlike his rematch with Kingston, Charli's dream match is never going to happen. Titus said that Eddie claimed he's done taking indie dates, not that he showed up most of the time even when he was, and AEW doesn't book intergender wrestling, and even if they did they wouldn’t book her, so she's out of luck. But, Titus said that he is willing to give Charli the chance to wrestle the top independent prospect in the world, when she faces Titus next week on Defy TV. Charli accepted the challenge. Titus Alexander then turned his attention to Eddie Kingston, and revealed that his attempt to confront Eddie at the New Japan show in Las Vegas this past weekend was thwarted when Eddie had the New Japan young boys escort him out of the building after Alexander's pre-show match. Titus again gave out his hotline number and said Eddie will want that number next week when he sees what Titus is going to do to his biggest fan.
The TrustBusters (Sonny Kiss and JeeVeS Kay) and The TrustBusters Reserve (Big Dan Champion and Joshua Bishop) vs. The Lawless Family (Rex Lawless/Jake Lawless/David Lawless/Ava Lawless) The TrustBusters and The TrustBusters Reserve defeated The Lawless Family with a Bishop Bomb from Bishop on Jake Lawless. (4:50)
SEGMENT THREE (SEVEN MINUTES):
- folkstyle were scheduled for a six-man tag match next, but Tim Bosby and Hunter Holdcraft made their way to the commentary table. Bosby said they haven't been able to get hold of Shaw Mason all day and he didn't show up to the building. Holdcraft said they signed the contract and their opponents deserve the chance to showcase their talents on national television, but they requested that their match be moved to the next segment just to give Mason a little more time to show up.
The Andersons (Brock Anderson and CW Anderson) vs. Abed Arroniz and Joe Krule The Andersons defeated Abed Arroniz and Joe Krule with a DDT from Brock on Arroniz. (4:02)
- Queen Aminata made her way to the commentary booth and called out Raychell Rose. Rose looked confused as she came out to join her. Aminata wanted to know why CORE matchmakers just offered her a singles match on next week's broadcast and speculated that Athena might have been behind it. Raychell said she's the one that asked for Aminata to have a singles match, Rose said she loves teaming up with Aminata and that they were having great success, but that if Athena is going to insist that Aminata tag with her Minion In Training Billie Starkz at every live event, Raychell should devote her time to becoming a better manager. Aminata said that Athena isn't here, and that while Aminata always wants Raychell in her corner, she'd much rather have Rose standing on the apron as her partner than leaned against the apron as her manager. Raychell smiled and said there's still time to get it changed to a tag match.
SEGMENT FOUR (NINE MINUTES):
folkstyle (Tim Bosby and Hunter Holdcraft) vs. Trevor Terry, Matt Quay, and Ayden Durning - folkstyle struggled considerably in this match as they were down a man. Bosby and Holdcraft showed great resilience and managed to pull out a win in a difficult situation. folkstyle defeated Trevor Terry, Matt Quay, and Ayden Durning with a rip cord lariat from Bosby on Durning. (5:30)
- We were sent to a pre-tape where we were shown a sign reading "Welcome To The Borough Of Jersey Shore." We then join Zack Clayton and former NFL kicker and Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania native Robbie Gould inside the Shore Diner where a crowd has formed. Robbie Gould announced that in acknowledgment of Zack Clayton's many accomplishments, as well as a very generous donation recently made to the Jersey Shore Historical Society, it is his honor to declare Zack Clayton as The King of Jersey Shore. Zack Clayton took the microphone and thanked Gould. Clayton said that you might think that as the star of MTV's Jersey Shore brand and an international professional wrestling star, getting this honor from a podunk, backwater town might not mean much to him. But when the people of Jersey Shore, PA get a glimpse of the man they love seeing on their rent-to-own TVs every week and that toothless grin comes across their face as they call him their King, Zack Clayton said it makes all the hard work he did, slaving away every day on the set of his hit reality show, worth it. We then cut to Zack Clayton and Robbie Gould signing autographs. All the fans must have rushed to Zack Clayton first before moving on to Robbie Gould, as Robbie's line is significantly longer. A fan hands Zack Clayton a diner place mat to autograph and tells Zack that she has seen every episode of Jersey Shore but doesn't remember anyone named Zack. Was he The Situation? Zack explained that he wasn't on Jersey Shore, which barely ran for seventy episodes, he was on the much more successful Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, which has run for over 150 episodes and is still on the air. The fan looks puzzled and asks Zack if he can sign it as The Situation anyway.
SEGMENT FIVE (TEN MINUTES):
Hyan and Kylie Paige vs. Las Chicas Indomables (Lluvia and La Jarochita) Hyan and Kylie Paige defeated Las Chicas Indomables with a Code Red from Kylie on La Jarochita. (8:38)
SEGMENT SIX (FOUR MINUTES):

Read the full article

HNAF (Hot New Album Fridays): Soulful Pop | Arlo Parks - ‘My Soft Machine’
My Soft Machine is a brilliant soulful, pop, psych, tour de force. It’s easy to get lost in this melodic and beautifully produced album by Arlo Parks. A cohesive blend of psychedelia, soul, pop and stimulating synths. This is one of the few albums that has come out in the past 2 years where we can say every track is our favorite track. Parks has delivered a captivating album and we rate this a 10/10! READ More: Arlo Parks celebrates the release of her highly anticipated album, My Soft Machine, out today via Transgressive Records. This deeply personal body of work takes listeners on a captivating journey through Parks' experiences in her early 20s. The album features previously released singles "Blades," "Weightless," "Impurities," "Devotion," and "Pegasus," a delicate and beautiful ballad created in collaboration with her close friend and acclaimed musician Phoebe Bridgers. My Soft Machine marks a significant milestone in the twice Grammy-nominated, Mercury Prize, and BRIT Award-winning artists already illustrious career. The album is a testament to her growth as an artist, showcasing her unique storytelling ability and introspective lyricism. Recorded between London and Los Angeles, the album features an impressive roster of producers including Paul Epworth, Ariel Rechtshaid, Romil Hemnani (Brockhampton), Buddy Ross (known for collaborations with Frank Ocean), Carter Lang (known for working with SZA), and self-production from Arlo herself. Leading into the release Arlo has graced the covers of Paste Magazine, GQ Hype, The Guardian Film & Music, DORK, MusicWeek, DIY and Gay Times. Parks shares about how the new album and album title came to fruition in this beautiful performance video noting: "The world/our view of it is peppered by the biggest things we experience - our traumas, upbringing, vulnerabilities almost like visual snow. This record is life through my lens, through my body - the mid 20s anxiety, the substance abuse of friends around me, the viscera of being in love for the first time, navigating PTSD and grief and self sabotage and joy, moving through worlds with wonder and sensitivity- what it’s like to be trapped in this particular body. There is a quote from a Joanna Hogg film called The Souvenir, it’s an A24 semi-autobiographical film with Tilda Swinton - it recounts a young film student falling in love with an older, charismatic man then being drawn into his addiction - in an early scene he’s explaining why people watch films - 'we don’t want to see life as it is played out we want to see life as it is experienced in this soft machine.' So there we have it... My Soft Machine." My Soft Machine follows her highly-praised debut album Collapsed in Sunbeams, which received two Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album, won the BRIT Award for Best New Artist, received the Honda Mercury Prize, and won the BBC Introducing Artist Of The Year Award. Her debut album also reached the top 3 on the UK Album Charts and won the AIM Awards for Best Independent Album and UK Independent Breakthrough. On top of all this, Arlo was also nominated for Breakthrough International Act at the BET Awards. Arlo was named as the youngest ever high-profile supporter of UNICEF and an ambassador for UK mental health charity CALM. She has plans to continue her extensive work with both charities. Where can you buy the Basic Fun retro Twinkle Eye ponies?
These are the stores I know about, if you know other places let me know!

Ellington Agway - (Connecticut)
Geppetto’s Toy Store (southern California)
Kip’s Toyland at The Grove (Los Angeles, California)
Canadian Toys R Us
maybe The Paper Store?? (unconfirmed)
ONLINE:

RedFive Toys (Massachusetts)

Tomfoolery Toys - Contact them via phone or email if you want specific ponies, or they’ll send you random ones. But this is the Twinkle Eye pony set, not the Rainbow pony set like the title says ;)
Wigwam’s Toys (UK store) - Not listed yet, but they’ve carried every previous Basic Fun line so they’re a good bet
Five Little Diamonds (UK store) - Listed but not in stock yet. However, they will let you reserve them in advance!
Toy Street (UK store) - Listed but not in stock yet. Note that they are listed as “Rainbow ponies Wave 4″. You can also search by them by individual pony name, like “pony Fizzy”.
Toy Masters (Manitoba, Canada)
Playful Mind Toys (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
Retro Festive (Oakville, Ontario, Canada)
The Rocking Horse (Kingston, Ontario, Canada)
Note that most of the online options are small, independent toy stores. If there are small toy stores in your town, check them out! The Twinkle Eye ponies could be closer than you think!
Also, your local small toy store might be willing to order the ponies for you if you ask nicely! :)

The best dog names, and how to name your puppy
Naming your family pet is one of the most beautiful moment when owning a pet. Petbacker has been committed to help pet owners to decide how they should name their pets, and it took Petbacker more than 2 years to conduct a comprehensive surveys and gathered information from 400,000 pet owners in regard to the questions of “why you give this precious name to your dog” , “does the dog name match your character of your pet”, as well as “do you name your dog based on their breed”.
Based on our surveys, we want to share with all pet’s owner some inspiring and fun ideas that are relevant to giving names for your fur babies!
For instance, we found that many owners named their pets after childhood movie characters, famous celebrities, their human friend, different seasons of the year etc. It is amazingly shocking to note that there are even pet owners who named their pets based on numerological method.
Method that owners use to name their pets.
Less than 4.5% of owners named their Pets based on Seasons of the year
Each season represents its special meaning. Some owners love to name their dogs based on the seasons and months which they were born such as spring, summer, autumn and winter. For example, babies who were born during spring season can be named Haru, in Japanese, ha ru は る) means spring. Some babies who are brought home by their owners in summer are directly named as summer. For babies born in the cold winter, they can be named as winter.
From the above ideas, the following are some of the names which you may take into consideration:
Spring - Asher, Abril, Lily or Spring rolls
Summer - Sunny, Lia, Lilac or Summer ball
Autumn - Pablo, Raven, Mooncake or Cinnamon
Winter - Polar, Santa, Sparkle or Gabby
More than 55.2% of owners named their Pets based on Human Names
Human names make great and meaningful names for dogs and puppies too. If your dog loves running, you may consider one of the suggested human names below to give him or her some cool attitudes.
Female dogs can be named as Anne, Anna, Angel, Alice, Lucy, Emily, Juliet, Amy, etc. Alternatively, the owner can use the characters from TV series as reference. Male dogs can be named as Jack, Nick, Mike, Peter, David, Henry, Irwin etc.
Less than 4.1% of owners named their Pets based on Foodie Name
Food naming method is also a very popular naming method. The pet owner can base on food names according to their pets’ fur colours or their own favourite food.
White fur – Tofu, Cauliflower, Onion, Garlic
Yellow-ish fur – Milk Tea, Coffee, Potato, Banana
Black fur - Cola, Sesame, Pepper, Seaweed
You can also call these little guys directly with your favourite snacks, such as pudding, buns, milkshake, noodle, cheese, cupcake, dumplings and other food.
To our surprise, about 30.3% of owners named their Pets based on Numerology method
Pet owners can actually name their pets using numerology naming method, owners will count the number belonging to their pets by deriving it from the dates of birth of their pets, and put a name that matches the pet birthday so the pet will have the character they want to have.
This can be done by finding the pet Life Path number, these Number can be obtained by adding the birthday numbers together until you get a single digit, for an example, a pet was born in November 14th, 2018, it would be = 1+1+1+4+2+0+1+8 = 18 = 1+8 = 9 …, So their Life Path is a “9”.
With the life path number, they will then decide what name to give so the number changes slightly to what they wanted. How to count a name with number so they add together to become single number.
For an example EDDY, E= 5,D=4,D=4,Y= 25 =2+5=7
Birthday date + Name = 9+7=16
The final digit would be, 1+6=7
Here you go ! Your best friend Life Path Number is a “7” .
Here are some of the attributes of the different Numbers :
Number 1, is a number that represents Self, and it brings a very independent character. If your pet has a name that reduces to “1”, you expect them to be more independent, this pet will probably be headstrong! Your best friend is going to do what it wants to, so be patient. They can make excellent guard dogs or protective animals.
Number 2, this is a Number of Cooperation and Relationships. This is the pet that will be happiest sitting in your lap! They will also like company, other pets, and humans. They don’t do well alone for extended periods. They can be naturally shy, and will dislike fireworks and thunderstorms.
Number 3, this is a Number of Creativity and Communication. With humans, they are likely to be on stage and often have a good sense of humour. They are quite social, and hyperactive, they love to be out & about, meeting new humans and other pets.
They are sometimes difficult to be trained due to a short attention span. They can be talkative too, so expect a lot of barking! They are typically good with children as they enjoy the busy energy that children brings.
Number 4, is a Number of Structure. Pets or animals with this Energy do best in structured environments. They like routines, such as feeding and training or exercise at the same times each day.
Number 5, This is a Number of High-Energy, Chaos and Adventure. These animals love adventure! They don’t like to be cooped up too. They love riding in cars, going for walks at the park. They might not be the best choice for small children, but they will be entertaining!
Number 6, This is the Number of The Nurturer. Ideally suited to home and family, this is a very devoted and loving animal. They love affection and are quick to give it too. They love to sleep in bed with you and will love cozy warm places to snuggle in. These dogs also make for the best service animals and can be trained to help a human who has disabilities.
Number 7, This is a Number of Intelligence and Curiosity. Your best friend would probably like games or toys that challenge them …plus learning Tricks too! But they often need their own space and time. They probably have their own favourite place, and it will probably be away from everyone else. They need space, so I hope your bed is big, or they will try to dominate the space!
Number 8, This is a Number of Abundance and Prosperity. They love studded collars, luxurious bed, even those animal-outfits! They love attention, and can be demanding. They are usually high-energy, be prepared to be lead around!
Number 9, This is a Number of The Philanthropist, Old Soul, Wisdom. They are Natural Leaders, but do not have a competitive streak, so not the best choice for a show animal. They are extremely sensitive. They know when you are hurting and when you are happy. They like a lot of physical contacts to assure that everything is alright.
Less than 3% of owners named their Pets based on Movie Character
Many young owners have their favourite cartoon characters, comic protagonists and so on. Hence, they can name their dogs by their favourite characters. For example, One Piece's Luffy, Qiaoba, Naruto, Kakashi, Doraemon etc.
About 2.9% of owners named their Pets based on Celebrity name
Pet owners do have their own favourite celebrities who they like and admire. Therefore, it’s pretty cool to name their pet according to the celebrity name, or the name of their fan club.
Imagine when he is running around on the street, and you call his name, people who passes by will think that there is a big star coming!
How to make your pets remember their name fast?
Giving a name to your pet is easy, but how do you want your pet to remember the name you gave or effect the change of name ASAP? We provide below some methods which you may adopt to make your pets remember their name.
1. Food temptation: After giving your dog a name, you need to patiently let him remember his name. One of the best ways is giving them food and treats!
2. Changing of tone: Under different circumstances, use different intonations to call the dog's name.
3. Name Tone: Calling names is limited to giving instructions and compliments, to give the dog a good impression. The next time you call its name, it will run to you right away.
After all the above suggestions, if you are still not sure of what name you give your dog, we would want to inspire you of what others named their dogs by sharing the names of the list below.
