Investigation of A Citizen Above Suspicion is the movie that explains fascism best. And it's not about the psycho-sexual angle or the fetish and power dynamics in play. It's about the belief that repression and criminalization and punishment are for your own good. It explains why people like JD Vance don't see themselves as weird, but good. They are weird. It's fucking weird to seek to mold a country in your own image, but fascism is about the belief that people who are too free will inevitably turn to no good.

If you've never seen this Italian film, it is striking to see the connection made so clearly between people who protest and take action to make things a little better and those in power who see them as subversives. Just another category of criminal. There are respectable citizens, who keep their heads down, and then there are trouble-makers who are different or act different.

Investigation of A Citizen Above Suspicion (Indagine Su Un Cittadino Al Di Sopra Di Ogni Sospetto) is about the fascist desire for a heavy hand that keeps the bad things at bay no matter what personal freedoms are offered-up in trade.

Fascism is absurd and yet it is intoxicating for many. Because it promises stability and safety and destroys anything that challenges those feelings.
